I practiced several art mediums as a young girl such as, drawing and painting. I learned more about photography once I took a photography class in high school and since then I haven’t stopped taking pictures. Did you study photography or did you jump in and learn along the way? Since taking my first photography class in high school, after graduating I took photography courses at Glendale Community College in California. During those three years, I had taken studio photography courses where I learned about studio photography lighting and how to use strobes and learn different lighting techniques. Other courses I had taken are learn how to make darkroom prints and learn how to develop and shoot film. Although, you can learn all these skills without going to college, I feel that I learn best when I am in a class environment and I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend. What do you love about photography? I love everything about photography. I shoot film photography and it is extra special to me because there is that mystery. You will never know what you might get until you have gotten your film developed. Film photography is special to me because you feel and remember every single shot you take. When taking photos... What do you prefer to portray, subjects, landscapes, objects etc? I prefer portrait photography because taking one’s portrait feels so special. There needs to be a level of comfort to get a good portrait, which I feel is so important. Taking one’s portrait is an experience. I

enjoy speaking to my subjects and learning a little bit of their backgrounds to create a beautiful photograph. What camera / s do you have? Tell us a little about the one you love the most. I own a Polaroid camera, a Canon A-E1 35mm film camera, a Canon 6D Mark ii digital camera, Canon 310XL Super8 camera, and a Mamiya RB67 medium format film camera. The one I love the most is my Mamiya RB67 which is what I take to shoot all my personal photography work. In my opinion I have created some of my best work with this camera because since I have only 10 shots per roll of film, I have to make each of them count. Do you have a photographer who is / might be the inspiration for your work? My forever photography inspiration is the iconic fashion photographer Richard Avedon. I specifically enjoy the way he photographs women in fashion. He makes them look powerful and beautiful while wearing timeless designer garments. Between studio photography and “on site” photography, which one do you prefer? I equally enjoy shooting both studio photography and on site. It usually depends on the mood that I’m feeling. Right now I am most inspired by studio photography work. I recently got a new strobe light so for the next upcoming shoots I’ll be practicing and experimenting different strobe lighting techniques. Do you have any anecdote about your process with photography? When I first learned about film photography, I disliked it very much. I disliked how film photography was so unpredictable. The funny thing is, I have come to fall in love with film and its unpredictability.

Simplemente me lancé.

How did you come to work with photography? For years I devoted my time to working with companies that didn’t value me in ways that I felt motivated enough to built a career off of that, so I was always an art enthusiast but after working several jobs I realized that it was time to focus on things that I wanted to do. I’ve always had a camera but when I moved to Philadelphia I immediately knew I wanted to further my knowledge on this; and so I did the idea of not seeing people like me being represented i knew that I had what it takes to make a difference and I just trusted my heart and just went for it and here I am today looking back and I’m very proud of all the changes that I have made and I have created to ensure visibility and opportunities for other BIPOC. Did you study photography or did you jump in and learn along the way? For me it was very important to study photography to learn about the history and how we got here. I studied photography in High school and years later I went to Community College in Philadelphia, where I studied for two years to get my Associate of Applied Sciences in Photography. Upon graduation from there, I was given a full scholarship to complete my BFA in Fine Art Photography from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. But even with going to these institutions I was able to find my own voice in Photography independently by research and giving myself the opportunity to dig deeper. What do you love about photography? For me, photography has done something that has helped me learn more about my community and myself. What I am most passionate about is creating spaces for the unwanted in this artistic industry. I like to challenge issues that make many uncomfortable, such as religion gender and sexuality, especially in colonized places like my Puerto Rico. When taking photos... What do you prefer to portray, subjects, landscapes, objects etc.? My preference has always been photographing subjects/ models and etc., as I explained before I love creating work that challenges Fashion, Religion, Gender, and Sexuality in my work, as a way to comment on what we are facing in a world like today!

What camera/s do you have? Tell us a little about the one you love the most. I have my Nikon D610 Full Frame that I have had since I upgraded in 2016. This camera was my first full frame camera and it has been an amazing tool that has helped me capture some of my most stunning work. I always say you don’t need fancy equipment to make a great photograph its all about understanding lightning and the camera itself. Do you have a photographer who is / might be the inspiration for your work? I base a-lot of my work on art, so when I say that I mean that I love looking back at paintings and etc. I love see the gestures which always allows me to think about how I can interpret that in a modern world. I don’t have many that inspire me but I do have some that I look up to such as Campbell Addy and Kehinde Wiley. Their work represents black and LGBTQ+ bodies embodying old art but in a contemporary world. Between studio photography and “on site” photography, which one do you prefer? Many of my images are created in the studio because it helps me understand more how to illuminate my subject and it also helps me understand more about the camera. When I am in a location shoot depending on the day it is easier to control the light with the use of reflectors and etc. But it always depends on the direction of the project but to conclude I do not think I have any preference because both satisfy me equally. Do you have any advice for future photographers? Take your time learn the camera, lighting and etc. there is no rush to success. Keep working on the things you love don’t let anyone dictate what you can and cannot do the world is ours and we have the ability to become what ever we put our mind into, but keep in mind that your are worth it and making sure that youare compensated for the things you do!

I started working with photography in 2015, I had a YouTube channel about fitness with the camera that I did vlogs I started taking photos and little by little I learned about editing. Since when I was 13 years old I made designs in photoshop and photographic editing indirectly goes hand in hand with creating designs. I have been editing since I was very young, I am currently 25 years old.
Which photographer is the inspiration for your work?
Did you study photography or did you jump in and learn along the way?
I like on site more because as I mentioned I like to complement subjects with landscape, there is also the advantage that with creativity you can make different ‘’ themes ‘’ more ‘’ faster ‘’ than in the studio. In the studio it is a bit more tedious to create a stage although with the correct tools you can develop a unique composition that would not be possible simply on site. There are always pros and cons but my preference is on site.
I just threw myself, I have spent hundreds of hours studying on YouTube and I have bought several courses that have been very useful to me. Photography is an art that no matter how far you have come with it, there is always room to continue evolving and acquiring knowledge. Creativity is very diverse, that’s why I admire creators and I always try to take the good things with me in their creations. What do you love about photography? I am passionate about the fact that each ‘’frame‘’ captured can be a frame that will last forever. These are moments that are not repeated twice in life. I am passionate about the fact that I can make an idea come true, something that I imagine I can bring to life through this art form. What do you prefer to portray, subjects, landscapes, objects etc? Never stop creating, I do not consider myself the best but at first I was not the best to say, consistency will take you far if you have the desire, the desire to learn and are willing to be mentored either in university or online. The most important thing is the vision and wish you have to be the best version of yourself. Always ask yourself, How can I improve? How can I improve? What can I do better next time? those have been my 3 key questions. Do you have any anecdote about your process with photography? When I started in 2015 people usually looked at me weird here in PR, I felt unsure of what I was doing.

The most passionate thing about photography is that for everyone it can be something different. Each one gives their own interpretation. For me it is an escape, a moment just for me. What do you prefer to portray, subjects, landscapes, objects etc? I think I feel more comfortable with landscapes and objects. I try from time to time to portray people and / or events, but I find it more stressful. I am recently trying a little street photography. What camera/s do you have?
Which photographer is the inspiration for your work? Here are some in no particular order. Jennifer Khordi (@jkhordi) - Her photos of the moon are simply spectacular. Vidal Cruz (vidalcruzart) - Although weddings are not my thing, I enjoy the different vision he has in his photos. Jorge Colón (jorgecolonphotography) - My teacher of the only photography class I have ever taken and a source of knowledge. He was the one who taught me to keep my horizons straight. Wilfredo Faisca (faiscart) - I heard about him from Chente, but when I saw his work, it took another level. His landscape photos are something else. I don’t know Jennifer, but I have to say that Jorge, Vidal and Wilfredo have been people who have never hesitated to answer any questions I may have regarding photography.
Nikon D3300, my first DSLR, that although I do not see much use, I keep it because it was the “first”.
Between studio photography and on-site photography, which one do you prefer?
Lumix G7 and Lumix G9, were my entry to the world of “mirrorless”. I opted for the 4/3 mic at the time because of the weight advantage over DSLRs. They have served me very well despite the fact that their sensors are smaller and have certain limitations.
Do you have any advice that you can give to future photographers?
Fujifilm X100F, I bought it to be an everyday camera. Being a single focal length, it forces me to think about the composition before taking the photo. iPhone 12 Pro Max, I know this can arouse a bit of controversy, but I’m a fan of creating with cell phones. We walk around with one in our pockets all the time and they say that the best
“On site”, and natural light because I do not master the “flash”.
Enjoy the process. Don’t focus on being better than so and so. Focus on improving yourself and being comfortable with your work. Do you have any anecdote about your process with photography? Not so much an anecdote, but if I am with a group of people taking photos, I avoid taking photos of what the rest of the group is portraying.

How did you come to work with photography? I got to work with photography when I started taking photos of my friends for a comic that I am still working on to this day. When I finished taking pictures of them, I didn’t know what to do next with the camera, so I asked a friend of mine who is a photographer to teach me how to use it. And that’s how it all started. Did you study photography or did you jump in and learn along the way? I never studied photography, I threw myself into the area without knowing a bit about how to use a camera, but Mike gave me that push and told me that throwing myself on the chest was the best way to learn, and I tell you, what to learn throughout the walking and taking that risk was one of the best decisions I ever made. What do you love about photography? What I am passionate about about photography is how you can express everything in a single image, as with a simple color change you can express different emotions, be it joy or sadness. That is what I try to do in my photographs every time I edit. What do you prefer to portray, subjects, landscapes, objects etc? I prefer subjects as it has helped me improve my “social skills” but lately I have taken photos of landscapes and objects and I love how they are looking. What camera/s do you have? I own two: a Canon EOS R and a Pentax K1000 (film camera). I have them because they are good cameras, although with the Canon EOS R my arm falls asleep because of how heavy it is with the lens on, but you get used to it. Which photographer is the inspiration for your work? I have 4: Bryan Suárez, Mike and Iris serve me not only as inspiration but as motivation since Mike was our teacher (he still is) and they push
me to keep improving and see how far I can go. The last person who has inspired me too much is Beacasso, the way she uses colors in each of her photos, what she shows in each of them, the way everything is so flamboyant, it helped me in truth. I hope that in some future I can work with her. Between studio photography and on-site photography, which one do you prefer? I prefer “on site” photography a thousand times and it is ironic since I started with studio photos. But the reason why I prefer photography “on site” is because in one location you already have everything you need to work, it is just a matter of getting used to its surroundings. Do you have any advice that you can give to future photographers? The advice I can give you is to flow and keep taking photos even if you think they don’t look good, because that’s what helps you improve along the way. And the other advice I can give you is to let your art speak for you, don’t do it out of flattery, because if you focus on that, along the way you will lose your vision and your motivation, so be patient about it, and enjoy. the process. I learned this the hard way and I hope this will help you in some way. Do you have any anecdote about your process with photography? I have a friend to whom I took photos in San Juan 2 years ago when I was starting in the photography business (so to speak) when I edited them and sent them to her, she did not like a specific photo since the colors of her shirt did not stand out and as I continued to edit it, I even got to a moment where she was present when I was editing them and that was the first time that it took me so long in a single photo. But at the end of the day all that push she gave me helped me in the long run. From time to time I mention it to him and tell him that it “traumatized me” but at the same time it helped me greatly and that I will always be grateful for it.
