The University’s Convocation celebration has traditionally opened with the performance of an Honour Song by the Lone Creek Singers and Drummers, to acknowledge our graduates and their achievements. We also acknowledge that the University is situated on Treaty 4 and Treaty 6 territories. Although we cannot meet physically at this time, we wish to recognize the importance of these treaty lands, which are the traditional homeland of the many First Nations and Métis peoples whose footsteps have graced these lands for centuries.

Spring 2021 Graduates, Congratulations! On behalf of all faculty and staff of the University of Regina, I want to acknowledge your efforts in completion of your degree, diploma or certificate. This is an accomplishment for which I expect you are feeling satisfaction and pride, and likely also relief that you have completed an important and challenging goal in your life plan. Spring Convocation is one of the highlights of the year for the campus community. Typically, graduates gather together to celebrate with classmates, teachers, family and friends, taking the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Wascana Park and mark the occasion with a ceremony filled with tradition, music, colour, and inspiring messages from our President, Chancellor, Honorary Degree recipients, and other dignitaries. With a ceremony hosting over 500 students on each of the three days of Convocation, it is certainly a special celebration. Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to gather again in this way. This is terribly disappointing for everyone. Personally, I was hoping to celebrate at this Spring’s Convocation ceremony with the first of my children to complete their University degree. My preference would have been cheering as they crossed the stage, and maybe initiating an embarrassing parental hug somewhere along the way, but the inability to do so in no way diminishes the pride I feel. I know that your parents, grandparents, partners, children and friends feel the same. Please keep and enjoy the commemorative items we have prepared to mark the occasion, and take the time to watch and enjoy the virtual ceremony, the inspiring videos of our newest Honorary Degree recipients, and the messages from your Deans and Federated College Presidents. Probably even more important is that you take time to mark the occasion in your own way, whether that be through time spent with those whose support was instrumental to your success, or finding a way to treat yourself a little bit – you deserve it! For some of you, this is a first step. You might have completed a certificate, and are now planning to continue with a diploma or degree. Perhaps you have discovered a new interest, and are planning to pursue an additional program. Or maybe you have not yet satisfied your curiosity, and are continuing with graduate work. For others, this is the end of your academic journey, and you are beginning a career in your chosen field. Regardless, please know that the University of Regina celebrates with you, and we are proud to include you as one of our alumni – nearly 80,000 strong. Congratulations! HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS CAROL LAFAYETTE-BOYD CSW’77, BSW’85 As a psychiatric nurse, social worker, world record-holding athlete, and community volunteer, alumna Carol LaFayetteBoyd is an inspiration to countless people in Saskatchewan and beyond. In a nursing and social work career spanning more than 30 years, she supported and helped change the lives of vulnerable people – in particular, children and families – as they faced a variety of complex challenges. A talented and decorated track and field athlete, she has won multiple World Masters Athletics Championship gold medals, set world records in her age category, and been named 2018 World Masters Athletics Athlete of the Year. In 2021, the Governor General of Canada awarded her the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in recognition of her longstanding commitment to “celebrating, researching and preserving the history, heritage and contributions of people of African ancestry through the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum.”

DR ERIC GRIMSON BSc’75 (HIGH HONOURS) One of the University of Regina’s most distinguished alumni, Saskatchewan-born Dr Eric Grimson is an internationally recognized expert in computer vision. His research in the area of medical image analysis helps neurosurgeons plan and execute delicate surgeries, and he and his students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have designed systems to measure brain structure changes in persons with Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. A longtime faculty member at MIT, Dr Grimson served as that institution’s Chancellor from 2011 to 2014, and has served as Chancellor for Academic Advancement since 2014. He also held a joint appointment as a lecturer in radiology at Harvard Medical School.

ROBERTA JAMIESON, OC A member of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory in Ontario, Roberta Jamieson has been one of Canada’s leading advocates for Indigenous rights and education over the past five decades. She has charted many “firsts” in her career, including serving as the first Indigenous head of the Indian Commission of Ontario, and being the first woman elected Chief of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. From 2004 to 2020, she served as President of Indspire, a national charitable organization that advocates for and supports accessible, culturally relevant education for Indigenous youth in Canada. She continues to serve as an advisor, volunteer, and Board member with a wide range of national organizations.

STUDENT AWARDS AND UNIVERSITY TRADITIONS GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC GOLD MEDAL The Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal recognizes the outstanding academic performance of a graduate student. The decision of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Scholarship and Awards Committee is based on the quality of the thesis or exhibition, external examiner’s report, quality of the defense, course work, cumulative grade point average (CGPA), publications and presentations deriving directly from the research done for the thesis or exhibition, and on awards received. The pool of applicants includes graduate students who apply for graduation at the Spring Convocation, or who graduated at the previous Fall Convocation. Nathanael Bergbusch, MSc, Biology Nathanael Bergbusch’s Master’s thesis titled The Impact of a Nitrogen-Removal Wastewater Upgrade on Primary Producers in Phosphorous-rich Streams of the Northern Great Plains largely focuses on the impact of Regina’s 2016 $158 million wastewater treatment plant upgrade on the water quality of two prairie rivers, Wascana Creek and the Qu’Appelle River. Nathanael has multiple publications, including three manuscripts (two first author, one second author). He has spoken at national and international conferences, collaborated with researchers and worked with many students. Nathanael says his greatest achievement was to develop an education program for the University of Regina’s participation in the Treaty Four Gathering in both Sept 2018 and 2019. While being an exemplary scholar, Nathanael is also very involved in the community as well. In recognition of this work, he was co-recipient of a United Nations Sustainable Education award, as well as a University of Regina Service Award. He was also a finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford. All of this also helped prepare him for his PhD in Social and Ecological Sustainability at the University of Waterloo and the Canadian Rivers Institute, examining the interaction between freshwater management and First Nations Treaty rights in Saskatchewan.

GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC SILVER MEDAL AND FACULTY OF NURSING AND SCHOOL OF NURSING DEAN’S MEDAL The Governor General’s Academic Silver Medal recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement and is awarded at Spring convocation to the most distinguished undergraduate student receiving a first degree over the past academic year. Akina Kuperus, BSc. Hons, Mathematics with High Honours Akina Kuperus graduates with a cumulative grade point average of 96.68%. Akina joined the University of

Regina community in 2017, and while studying here, she received numerous awards in recognition of her academic achievements, including: Academic Gold Scholarship (2018, 2019 & 2020), Centennial Merit Scholarship, James B. Carefoot Memorial Scholarship, and Joan & Norman Beirnes Scholarship. Akina was also named to the Science Dean’s Honours List for the 2018 winter and fall terms, and the 2019 winter term. Akina is also the recipient of the University Prize in Science which is awarded to the most distinguished student graduating with a first degree from the Faculty of Science

UNIVERSITY OF REGINA PRESIDENT’S MEDAL AND FACULTY OF NURSING AND SCHOOL OF NURSING DEAN’S MEDAL The University of Regina President’s Medal is awarded at each Spring and Fall Convocation to a student receiving a first undergraduate degree who has shown academic excellence as well as major leadership and commitment to extra-curricular activities while a student at the University. Cole Woytiuk, BScN with Distinction Cole is graduating from the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science (SCBScN) program with a cumulative grade point average of 83.09% and in the practice education setting, provided compassionate, highly-skilled, technical care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cole demonstrated his exceptional flexibility, knowledge, and judgment while working within provincial public health directives, evolving workplace policy and practice directives, and rapidly evolving clinical best practice evidence. Cole is a leader, advocates for the vulnerable, and has the true spirit of volunteerism. He held the positions of Indigenous Student Representative, Student Affairs Officer, and Vice President with the University of Regina Nursing Students’ Society (URNSS). He held the Director of Indigenous Health Advocacy position and is the current Vice President of the national Canadian Nursing Students’ Association. Cole worked extensively with the Regina Treaty Status Indian Services, tutored young students and his nursing peers, and advocated for vulnerable groups during the pandemic. He has also received various scholarships and awards throughout his program while dedicating his time to various extra-curricular activities. Cole is also the recipient of the Faculty of Nursing and School of Nursing Dean’s Medal which is awarded to a graduate of the SCBScN program receiving a first degree with a minimum average of 80%, who has shown leadership and commitment to extra-curricular activities while a student in the program.

UNIVERSITY MEDAL The University Medal is presented annually at Spring Convocation to the most distinguished student – one who has achieved academic excellence in all courses completed during the previous twelve months with a minimum of 30 credit hours in two terms. Nolan Grad, Faculty of Arts Nolan has completed 72 credit hours in the Faculty of Arts through Campion College towards a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Linguistics. Nolan achieved a 97.36% sessional grade point average in the previous academic year. As well, Nolan has recently completed the Certificat en français langue seconde program through La Cité.

FACULTY OF ARTS DEAN’S MEDAL The Faculty of Arts Dean’s Medal is presented annually at each Spring and Fall Convocation to recognize the academic achievements of an outstanding student in the Faculty of Arts. Kaitlyn Seath, BA Hons, International Studies with High Honours Kaitlyn has demonstrated her academic excellence through her receipt of many scholarships and fellowships, in addition to achieving a place on the Dean’s Honours List many times throughout her undergraduate career. She has demonstrated strong leadership skills through her work with Engineers Without Borders, the Youth Community Forum, the Natal and New Organization as well as in her work with the Regina Public Interest Research Group (RPIRG) Green Patch. The Faculty of Arts commends Kaitlyn on her dedication to academic success and her commitment to using her natural leadership skills to serve her community.

S.E. STEWART AWARD The Faculty of Arts awards annually the S.E. Stewart Award to the most distinguished of its graduates receiving a first degree. This distinction is based exclusively on academic standing. Alyssa L. Stearns, BA, Psychology with Great Distinction Through Campion College, Alyssa is graduating with a program grade point average of 91.36%. She began her undergraduate studies through Campion College at the University of Regina in the fall of 2018 with her sights set on a degree in psychology. From the moment she joined the University, Alyssa has been unwavering on her academic path, achieving Dean’s Honours List status in every fall and winter term and receiving several awards over the years including Academic Silver Scholarships and the Reverend Peter W. Nash, S.J. Scholarship in Social Science.

FACULTY OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DEAN’S MEDAL The Faculty of Business Administration Dean’s Medal is awarded at each Spring and Fall Convocation to a student receiving a first degree with a minimum average of 80% who has shown leadership in and commitment to extra-curricular activities while at the University of Regina. Jordan Tholl, BBA, Finance with Great Distinction Jordan Tholl is graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Finance. Achieving an exceptional program grade point average of 92.05%, Jordan is not only a high performing young scholar, but has been a strong leader within the Faculty, the University, and the broader community. Jordan has made a significant and positive impact by contributing to raising more than $130,000 for organizations including Carmichael Outreach, the Regina Food Bank, and YWCA Regina. He co-founded an Enactus Regina effort called SaskMasks, which raised $50,000 for local charities. Jordan also served as an intern with the Embassy of Canada in Washington DC. Participating in the UR Investing program, Jordan initiated the creation of the UR Investing Alumni Committee. He was a member of the finance team that secured first place in the prestigious JDC West competition. Jordan received a 2019 Community Leadership award for his commitment to elevating youth through sport.

LEON GOLDMAN SCHOLARSHIP The Leon Goldman Scholarship is awarded to the most distinguished graduate of the Faculty of Business Administration receiving a first degree at the Spring Convocation. This scholarship was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Norman Gleiberman and family to honour Mrs. Gleiberman’s father, Mr. Leon Goldman, on his 75th birthday. Leanne Jansen, BBA in Accounting (Co-operative Education) with Great Distinction Leanne Jansen is graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Accounting. Leanne participated in the Co-op Education program and still managed to complete the BBA program with an exceptional program grade point average of 92.91%. Leanne also volunteered within the university in programs such as InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF), and the wider community as an active member of the Young Adults Leadership Team at Parliament Community Church. Notably, Leanne has been the recipient of several academic awards throughout her tenure at the University of Regina, including making the Dean’s list seven times.

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE DEAN’S MEDAL

The Bachelor of Education After Degree (BEAD) Convocation Prize was established by the Faculty of Education to encourage and recognize BEAD students. The BEAD Convocation prize is awarded to the most distinguished graduate, with an overall internship rating of “Outstanding” and the highest grade point average in the program.

The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Dean’s Medal is presented at each convocation to recognize the achievements of an outstanding student in the Faulty of Engineering and Applied Science.

Hân Pham, BEd, Elementary Education with Great Distinction Hân Pham completed her degree through the Yukon Native Teacher Education Program (YNTEP) with an overall average of 93.92%. She was also the recipient of the Academic Silver Scholarship (2020 Fall). Hân was born and raised in the Yukon Territory and is of Vietnamese descent. Following high school, she obtained a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Calgary. Her love for teaching stemmed from her own passion for learning as a child. Her most memorable accomplishments of her undergraduate experience were building relationships with her fellow cohort, instructors, and students in the midst of a global pandemic, as well as learning from knowledgeable and resourceful host teachers. She prides herself in being a calm, patient, and positive role model for all her current and future students. Hân is looking forward to working as an elementary school teacher in Yukon, and further developing her skills as a teacher.

SASKATCHEWAN TEACHERS’ FEDERATION AWARD At each University of Regina convocation ceremony, the Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation (STF) awards a prize to the most distinguished student of the graduating class in the Faculty of Education graduating with a first degree. Lauren Sauser, BEd, Elementary Education with Great Distinction Lauren achieved an overall undergraduate average of 92.11%. Over the course of Lauren’s degree she was the recipient of the Centennial Merit Plus Scholarship, the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan Scholarship, and three Academic Silver Scholarships. Lauren comes from a family of educators and always knew that working with children in an academic setting was a passion of hers. As someone who does not shy away from facing a challenge head-on, Lauren completed her final internship in the midst of the recent global pandemic, maintaining a positive attitude and devotion to supporting her students throughout. Lauren is looking forward to working with the Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division starting in the fall.

Christina McCusker, BASc, Industrial Systems Engineering (Internship), with Great Distinction Christina is graduating with a program grade point average of 89.00%, which is exceptional considering Engineering’s demanding curriculum and Christina’s time commitment to high-level athletics throughout her academic career. Christina has been the recipient of the Academic Gold Scholarship; Academic Silver Scholarship (four times); Dean’s Honour List (five times); Associated Engineering Award; SaskPower Award in ISE; ASHRAE Grant; the Academic All Canadian Scholarship (five times) as well several as others. She is also graduating with a Certificate in Administration-Level II. Christina played on the U of R Women’s Basketball team from 2014 - 2019 and received Rookie of the Year honours. She has had a multitude of extra-curricular activities and an impressive list of leadership involvement and volunteer commitments that she has maintained throughout her studies. Christina’s fourth-year Capstone Project entitled, “Portable Variable Air Volume System for Undergraduate Laboratory” was to design and construct a portable and interactive teaching tool that shows the main principles of air movement, heat transfer, and building control for use in the U of R HVAC&R laboratory.

APEGS GOLD MEDAL The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) Gold Medal is awarded annually to an undergraduate of Engineering and Applied Science who has shown both leadership and academic excellence. Avery Cameron, BASc, Software Systems Engineering (Co-operative Education) with Great Distinction Avery graduates with a program grade point average of 86.00%. Avery has been the recipient of several awards and scholarships throughout his academic career. Some of these include, Dean’s Honor List (four times); APEGS Undergraduate Scholarship, Regina Engineering Society Scholarship; and the UR Centennial Merit Scholarship. Throughout Avery’s studies he has also been a long-time dedicated leader in extra-curricular activities, most notably with UR Cougar Racing where he participated in the fabrication and design of a race car. He has also been very involved with IEEE throughout his studies and was a Senior Designer in the Western Engineering Competition in 2018. Avery’s co-operative education work terms included postions at SaskEnergy, SaskPower, and Ciena (Ottawa, ON). His fourth-

year Capstone Project entitled, “Identifying Contaminants in Residential Curbside Recycling” focused on improving residential recycling habits. Avery has also successfully completed several research projects as part of his degree, including creating a 911 Test Call app which taught children how to make an emergency call. Avery is currently employed as a Software Systems Developer at Prairie Robotics.

FACULTY OF KINESIOLOGY AND HEALTH STUDIES DEAN’S MEDAL The Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies Dean’s Medal is presented to a student graduating with a first degree who has demonstrated both leadership and academic achievement in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies. Alyssa Roslinski, BKin and BEd in Physical Education with Distinction Alyssa is graduating with two degrees, a Bachelor of Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Education with a major in Physical Education and two minors, one in Health Education and one in Outdoor Education. Alyssa was awarded the PHE Canada Student Award in 2020 and received the Centennial Merit Scholarship in 2016. Alyssa was the student representative for Education at the Saskatchewan Physical Education Association (SPEA) Student Leadership Experience in 2018, she attended Treaty Education Camps 2.0 and 3.0 in 2016 and 2017, as well as the Health Outdoor Physical Education Professional Development Day in 2018 and 2019. As a true reflection of U of R’s motto “As one who serves,” Alyssa has grown as a well-rounded leader within our community. Alyssa was extensively involved with extracurricular activities such as taking on the role of Health Outdoor Physical Education (HOPE) Treasurer, organizing events and managing social media for the UR Parks Canada Club, coaching with the Special Olympics, and being a Cabin Leader at Caring Hearts Camp.

FACULTY OF MEDIA, ART, AND PERFORMANCE DEAN’S MEDAL The Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance Dean’s Medal is presented to student graduating with a first degree who has demonstrated both leadership and academic achievement in the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance. Sabine Wecker, BFA, Visual Art with Great Distinction Sabine graduates with a grade point average of 89.25%. Sabine’s visual art focuses on ceramics. Her sculptures start with forms she has skillfully thrown on the potter’s wheel. In her recent work she metaphorically uses the hollow vessel form to abstractly address ideas of motherhood, both from her personal experience as the parent of two daughters and in the broader sense of identification with deep and complex commonalities of mothers across time and place. Integrated with this content is an imaginative and conceptual approach to the material and formal qualities of her medium of clay. She integrates rich ceramic surfaces of nuanced texture and colour with sensitively composed structures of fragile, at times perforated and translucent vessels precariously balanced on solid, rock-like carved bases. Sabine was the President of the University of Regina Ceramics Student Society and has many ties and involvements with the German societies in Saskatchewan. Her academic and artistic abilities have been recognized with five scholarships and awards.

W.A. RIDDELL AWARD IN MEDIA, ART, AND PERFORMANCE The W.A. Riddell Award in Media, Art, And Performance is awarded to a graduate earning a first degree who has demonstrated exceptional artistic merit as well as academic achievement. Hanna Hudson-Plante, BA in Media, Art and Performance with Great Distinction With a concentration in Pop Culture and a minor in Arts Administration, Hannah is graduating with a program grade point average of 88.07% and a major average of 92.11%. Hanna is an exceptional student who has received several scholarships throughout her time at the University of Regina.

SASKATCHEWAN REGISTERED NURSES’ GOLD MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL PRACTICE Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Gold Medal for Excellence in Clinical Practice is awarded to a graduate of the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program who demonstrates excellence in clinical practice through the attainment of the highest combined average in four required 300-level clinical courses. Adrian Muscat, BScN with Distinction, minor in Psychology Adrian is graduating from the SCBScN program with a program grade point average of 84.34%. He also completed the required year-three clinical courses with the highest average of 84.25%. Achieving these averages was a significant accomplishment during some extraordinary learning pivots in the clinical/practice education setting related to evolving public health directives, policy and practice directives, and clinical best practice evidence. In addition to his outstanding academic performance, he has been involved in numerous extra-curricular activities, including volunteering with the University of Regina Nursing Students’ Society (URNSS) (Year Representative, Academic Relations Officer, and Director of Student Diversity), the Regina Open Door Society, Diabetes Canada, the Saskatchewan Health Authority, and Canadian Blood Services. He was actively employed as a tutor, research assistant, community support worker/caregiver, and teaching assistant throughout his studies, and was team captain in the University of Regina intramural competitive volleyball league.

FACULTY OF SCIENCE DEAN’S MEDAL The Faculty of Science Dean’s Medal is awarded each year to the student that the Faculty of Science nominates for the President’s Medal. Annaliese Beck-McKenize, BSc. Hons, Biology with High Honours Annaliese Beck-McKenize is graduating with a cumulative grade point average of 96.13%. During her studies, Annaliese received numerous awards in recognition of her academic achievements including the University Medal in 2019. During the 2020 winter

term, as part of an Independent Research Course, Annaliese worked with Drs. Andrew Cameron and Keith MacKenzie on whole genome sequencing and comparative genomics to examine chromosomal rearrangements in vancomycinresistant Enterococcus faecium. Later that summer, Annaliese worked as an NSERC research student with Dr. Tanya Dahms. Annaliese worked from home preparing for when returning to campus would be allowed for research purposes. Once she was allowed to return to campus, she cultured cells, conducted minimum inhibitory concentration assays, imaged cells by atomic force microscopy, and performed data analysis for her NSERC grant. Outside of her academics, Annaliese has held volunteer positions in many organizations. A few of these include: Engineers Without Borders, New Hope Lutheran Church, Saskatchewan Health Authority, Meals on Wheels, Regina Food Bank, Regina General Hospital Pediatric Ward, and You Should Garden.

UNIVERSITY PRIZE IN SOCIAL WORK The University Prize in Social Work is awarded to the most distinguished Social Work student achieving the highestgrade point average among students graduating with a first degree in the Faculty of Social Work. Bryce MacEwen, BSW Surrounded by a supportive family and community in Saskatoon, Bryce had always hoped to attend university after high school—the first in his immediate family. Bryce had many opportunities to learn and grow along the way through his involvement in athletics, music, church, and summer camp. Each of these communities further refined his vision for the future, eventually helping him to discover that his career would undoubtedly be anchored within a helping profession. During his studies in the Youth Care Worker Diploma program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Bryce began to direct his passions towards the profession of social work. With the encouragement of his instructors, family, and friends, Bryce began his studies in the Bachelor of Social Work program at the University of Regina in the fall of 2018. Now that he has completed his degree, Bryce is entering into the profession as a Community Program Coordinator with CFS Saskatoon.

ACADEMIC REGALIA At live convocation ceremonies, the academic regalia worn by the graduates and the members of the platform procession may consist of a gown, a hood or stole (worn over the shoulders), and a hat or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive academic dress for each degree conferred and, at times, for the disciplines in which the degree is awarded. With the exception of students graduating with a PhD and federated college students, graduates wear black gowns. PhD graduates’ gowns are scarlet with royal blue around the collar, down the front and around the sleeves. Students graduating from the University of Regina who have been registered through a federated college wear the following: red gowns for Campion College students, sky blue gowns for First Nations University of Canada students, and royal blue gowns for Luther College students. Students are welcome to wear their Indigenous ceremonial dress, other cultural ceremonial dress, or their military or law enforcement dress uniform with, or instead of, the gown at the Convocation ceremonies. The following is a list of the Undergraduate and Graduate degree hoods. The first and second squares represent the colour of the outside and inside trim, or lining, respectively. The third square represents the colour of the decorative cord.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY The University of Regina is situated on Treaty 4 lands with a presence in Treaty 6 territory. These are the territories of the nêhiyawak (Cree), Anihšinapek (Saulteaux), and Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda, and the homeland of the Métis. Today, these lands continue to be the shared territory of many diverse peoples from near and far. The University of Regina operates under the terms of The University of Regina Act. Convocation comprises the Chancellor, the Senate, all graduates of the University of Regina, all graduates of the University of Saskatchewan at Regina Campus, and such other classes of persons as the Senate may from time to time determine. Convocation meets twice annually, in June and October, unless there are extraordinary circumstances. The Chancellor is elected by the members of Senate, holds office for three years, presides over Convocation, confers degrees and is ex officio Chair of the Senate and a member of the Board of Governors. Senate is the University’s “window on the world.” It is concerned with the academic welfare of the institution and has a variety of duties and powers. Most of the broader issues of academic policy within the University are reserved for Senate’s approval. In another role, it acts as an ultimate court in academic affairs. The membership of Senate includes persons, ex officio, or by virtue of the University offices they hold. Convocation elects another fourteen members of Convocation to the Senate. Students registered in the University elect six students of the University to Senate. In addition, any professional society, group or organization in the

province that Senate believes contributes in a significant way to the social, economic and cultural welfare of the province may be represented on Senate. The Board of Governors consists of eleven members and is responsible for overseeing the administrative and business affairs of the University. It ultimately has authority in matters related to the raising and spending of University funds, and the acquisition and management of University property. Council’s membership includes administrative officers, all Deans and directors of academic programs, all members of the teaching staff except sessional lecturers, and a number of student representatives. All matters of substance related to the academic affairs of the University, as well as matters of academic discipline, must be considered and approved by the Council. The Executive of the University of Regina Council (Executive of Council) has been empowered by Council to act on its behalf. Executive of Council membership is devised as a proportional basis of the academic composition of this University. Disciplines that are related to one another in the broader areas of teaching are, for purposes of administrative and academic planning, brought together into Faculties, of which there are currently ten. Each Faculty is headed by a Dean; formal membership includes the Dean and the teaching members of the various associated disciplines. The Deans are recognized by The University of Regina Act as being the chief executive officers of their respective Faculties and are directly responsible to the President through the Provost and VicePresident (Academic). Subject to the statutes of the Senate and the University of Regina Council, each Faculty has charge of all matters of scholarship in its disciplines and programs.
