consecutive year, our Fall enrolment numbers have broken all records with more than 15,000 students registered. Students are attracted to all that our University has to offer – the programs and student supports that your gifts help to fund. Recent provincial cuts have necessitated strategic reductions across the University budget, and in challenging times like these, our donors are especially important to our University. The idea that Together We Are Stronger – the overarching theme of our Strategic Plan – has never been truer. The economy has been hard on our students, too. Nicole Callihoo (MPA’14) DONOR | ALL MY RELATIONS AWARD Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy alum Nicole Callihoo gifted $10,000 over five years to the School to create the “All My Relations Award” for students enrolled in the Master of Public Administration program.
“ This is my thank you to all those who supported me, and especially to JSGS, who helped me get to where I am in my career,” says Nicole. “I think large donations are sometimes hard for people to make, and what they might not understand is that by structuring the gift in increments it allows a person to work it into their budget. I hope that people connect with the ‘All My Relations’ term. It’s a prayer that emphasizes how interconnected we all are, and it’s this prayer that inspired me to help those who are coming after me.”

Raquel Pasap (MPA’17) RECIPIENT | ALL MY RELATIONS AWARD A Nakota woman from Carry The Kettle First Nation in Treaty Four, Raquel Pasap pursued her master’s degree in Public Administration in hopes of one day creating new government policies and programs reflecting the needs of Indigenous people.
“ As a full-time single parent, student, and employee I struggled financially to cover daycare, rent, and additional evening childcare costs so that I could study. I was so relieved when I received the bursary. My confidence was boosted. To be honest, the first year was overwhelming for me and I questioned my ability to succeed. If I hadn’t received anything, I’m not sure I would be contemplating my future plans. Now I am.” Raquel is very grateful to donor Nicole Calihoo. “Her thoughtfulness changed my life. I look forward to being able to pay it forward.”

Larry Hesterman DONOR HESTERMAN TRACK & FIELD AWARD The Hesterman Family created The Hesterman Track and Field Award, which has been given to deserving students more than 20 times.
Larry Hesterman, a retired businessman who believes in living life to the fullest, also believes in the University of Regina and its power to change lives. “Sport builds character and education builds the people we want to keep in our community. Providing awards for track and field athletes means that some of the financial stress that weighs on a student is alleviated; pressure that may mean they are making a decision between books or rent. I hope it also means they get to enjoy life a little – every student should be able to relax with a beer once in a while. Being a student shouldn’t mean life is no fun!”

Joy Becker (BASC’17) RECIPIENT HESTERMAN TRACK & FIELD AWARD
“My first year of University was very difficult. Being away from home, and learning how to manage my track practices and classes, was difficult. If I had not received financial support, I would not have been able to work as hard as I did on my courses. I would have needed a job, and couldn’t have focused on academics and athletic performance. I truly believe that the reason I received employment directly after finishing University is because of my strong academic performance and my track experience – things I wouldn’t have had without the very generous support of people like Larry Hesterman. Now, I can’t wait to do my part to help others. I hope to give back in my community by coaching track and field at the high-school level. I want kids to have the same opportunities that I had because of sports.”

Joyrell Thompson RECIPIENT | AN EMERGENCY BURSARY
Joyrell Thompson faced many challenges as a working student and mother of young children. Her story is compelling. “If I had not received a bursary, I would have given up on my dreams. It’s that simple. These past few years I have been working, parenting two young children, and doing my classes simultaneously. Now, the classes I need to take are not only more intense, but are also only available during the day. This means I can’t work. This was a problem, as I had no money left. I knew I was going to have to quit school to work, and I knew that when I did this I would never come back. Something would always come up that would convince me I needed to work a little while longer. When I saw that I had received an emergency bursary I started to cry. It was enough to cover the classes I wanted to take for the Winter semester. I didn’t have to quit.”
Emergency bursaries mean that when life happens, education continues. Thank you for choosing to help students remain in University when the road isn’t easy.

Karen Kohm DONOR (IN MEMORY OF HER NIECE) THE STEPHANIE L. KOHM NURSING AWARD Karen Kohm created The Stephanie L. Kohm Nursing Award, a $1,000 scholarship given annually to a female undergraduate who is also a parent, enrolled in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Regina.
“My niece Stephanie was a smart, athletic, fun-loving mother of four who passed away when she was 31 years old after an extended battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I saw the scholarship as a way to memorialize her courageous spirit and also as a way to support young mothers entering the field of nursing. As a business owner, registered nurse, and mother of two, I know how hard it is to balance a career and home life. I’m hoping this award will, in some small way, help young mothers pursuing their dreams. Nursing has provided me with many great opportunities and this award is a way of giving back to the profession I love. Stephanie’s family and I are very excited to know that the Stephanie L. Kohm Nursing Award will make a difference for years to come.”

Together, we can raise the curtain on Darke Hall again. This campaign is about the people who will come to Darke Hall, the experiences they will have, and what that will mean to them. The South Saskatchewan Community Foundation is a leading organization which has facilitated philanthropic grants in support of the restoration of Darke Hall. Darke Hall has given us so much. An exceptional performance stage with amazing acoustics, where everyone is welcome. From the five-year-old pianist playing his first recital piece for an adoring audience of friends and family, to the renowned world-class performer people clamor to see, Darke Hall has memories galore embedded in its walls.
The University of Regina is grateful that the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation supports Saving Darke Hall. As a catalyst in our community for over 50 years, connecting and supporting dedicated people and charitable agencies that envision a better Saskatchewan through philanthropy, Saving Darke Hall is aligned with the Foundation’s mandate to help create and maintain strong communities for generations to come. Such generosity is part of an overall total contribution of nearly $600,000 towards the College Avenue Campus Renewal Project and Darke Hall through donor directed funds.

RESEARCH WITH IMPACT Dr. Gordon Huang, executive director of the University of Regina’s Institute for Energy, Environment, and Sustainable Communities, has launched a unique tool that houses projections about future climate change. The free data portal, called the Canada Climate Change Data Portal (CCCDP),
is designed to help keep Canadians safe by providing easy access to future climatic scenarios, allowing for adaptation to minimize or avoid the negative impacts of climate change. While extreme weather is a fact of life, thanks to the CCCDP, Canadians now have access to climate projections to the year 2,100. This puts life-saving data at our fingertips for the next 80 years.

Just like you, the University of Regina community gives back. Students, staff, and faculty support many charitable causes over the course of a year, offering their time and opening their wallets to support 5 Days for the Homeless, the United Way, and Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to giving back to not-for-profit organizations through volunteerism and donations. In 2016, the University of Regina students, staff, and faculty raised $108,000 for the United Way, the highest amount ever.

The Paul J. Hill School of Business JDC West team logged a total of 3,377 volunteer hours and raised close to $25,000 for Hope’s Home Charity, which provides care for children, including those with complex medical needs.

The University of Regina – with campuses located on Treaty 4 and Treaty 6 territories, the ancestral lands of the Cree, Saulteaux, Dakota, and Lakota nations and the homeland of the Métis – is a comprehensive, mid-sized university that traces its roots back to the creation of Regina College in 1911.
