>DESCRIPTION

infrastructure is “the combination of fundamental systems that support a community, region, or country.” it includes everything from water and sewer systems to road and rail networks to the national power and natural gas grids.” during the twentieth century, infrastructure became about conquering the landscape. technologically speaking, humans were able to build nuclear power plants, massive high rises, expansive freeways, and other “necessities” regardless of the natural environment. however, we can now look back and learn from those decisions by studying the negative repercussions, such as social and environmental impacts. this approach has been called “restorative infrastructure.”

plan of the densely populated urban renewal and racist today, the site functions for center of african american culture city planning led to the forced parking, acting as a divider between known as the hill district in 1910. relocation of over 8,000 residents. downtown and the hill district.

_design + build a house for a navajo family _off the grid _sweat equity model _ease of construction

>DESCRIPTION

11 students and i were tasked with designing an 800sf house for a navajo family during the early covid-19 pandemic. the house needed to be designed to be functional off-grid, but with all the electric and plumbing for future accessibility. we worked directly with the beneficiary to create a space that they could call home. we placed heavy focus on ease of construction and future expansion so that the family could learn and understand while we were there, then add to the house in the future with their newly acquired knowledge and skills. the house is separated into four modules that are shifted to allow for future expansion to the east-west and north-south.

nation is one of the most impoverished areas within the united states. access to potable water, electricity and acceptable housing are very challenging and there is currently little hope on the horizon. covid-19 significantly compounded these issues and created new concerns. the DESIGNBUILDBLUFF program from the university of utah has a lasting relationship with navajo nation and we were able to work through and help where we were able to. the location of the site is on a protected mesa near the teec nos pos chapter at the four corners, within the utah boundary. students were tasked with designing a house over the summer of 2019 and building the house in the fall. we worked with a sweat equity navajo group, the beneficiary family, and several non-profits to learn and understand culture, and design, iterate, and ultimately construct a house that the dee family gets to call their home.

county affords navajo residents to apply for the navajo trust fund that, when approved, grants families around $84,000 and one acre of land to build a residence. this process can take a years with many hoops to jump through, however. the beneficiary of this project was awarded this grant and DESIGNBUILD BLUFF agreed to use around $50,000 to complete the house, leaving the rest for the family to put towards future expansion. the reservation, and our site specifically, are so remote that 10-20% of construction fees should be added just to get materials and labor to the site. the largest challenge was the massive inflation of building materials caused by covid-19 that forced us to constantly change the design and details when materials were too expensive or just no longer available.

located in the center of the university of utah campus, the film art and media building is an out of date, brutalist building. this project is an adaptive reuse and extention of the building to add the necessary space, and modern technological enhancements. i used the addition as a new front door for the design portion of campus as well as uniting the other design and art buildings. what was once a building that was forgotten about and hidden is now the focal point, and allows access at multiple levels to connect students using program such as a cafe, game room and shared studios and galleries so that all design students have a shared home on campus.

>DESCRIPTION

democracy consists of 3 main components.

1. people (rulers, representatives, citizens, elections) 2. interactions (competition and cooperation) 3. culture (public realm and current events) democratic architecture focuses on all the users by providing spaces that appeal ro people of differing cultures and encouraging them to interact. it includes programming that highlights the tensions of opposites, be designed with meeting spaces to facilitate social discussion, and allow for compromise, adaptability and evolution.

With the prime location of the site in connection to the rest of the city, it was important to have access to views out of the site such as Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, and of course the amazing architecture already existing such as Tribune Tower and Trump Tower. I wanted my design to be a destination more so than a sight. Something that demands people to visit and spend time instead of walking on by. The interior of the site is angular while the exterior is orthogonal and predictable, so that once people are in the site they feel a sense of disconnection with the surrounding.
