I frequently reference our beloved institution as a world-class, premier and award-winning institution of higher learning, ranked among the very best throughout our state and country.

As we prepare to celebrate our historic centennial year, let us pause for a moment to reflect on how far we have come since 1926, when visionary community leaders recognized the power of higher education to foster an economically strong society and set about creating Tyler Junior College, with an inaugural class of 93 students.

This fall, TJC enrolled a record 12,789 students. Annually, TJC serves almost 20,000 students across its credit and non-credit programs, over 16,000 in credit programs and nearly 4,000 in continuing studies.

We realize that this significant milestone is directly attributed to you, our stalwart champions and supporters, who continue to pay it forward and are part of the Black and Gold Legacy.

Apache Nation featured in Amazon Prime series, ‘The College Tour’

Tyler Junior College is having its moment in the spotlight during an episode of “The College Tour” — an Amazon Prime TV series that features colleges and universities across the country and showcases campus life through stories told by current students and alumni.

Hosted by Alex Boylan, a 2002 winner of “The Amazing Race” on CBS, each episode of “The College Tour” focuses on a single institution, providing an in-depth look at academics, campus culture and student experiences.

TJC’s episode showcases the College’s state-of-the-art facilities, academic programs, unique traditions, involvement opportunities and thriving campus environment, with current and former students sharing their perspectives on college life.

The TJC episode is currently streaming on multiple platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, Google TV, Niche and Nearpod.

It is also available on The College Tour app and website that serves more than 60,000 high school counselors nationwide. It can also be viewed at TJC.edu/TheCollegeTour.

“There’s a special energy at TJC,” Boylan said of his visit. “Everywhere I turned while we were filming, the students were so dynamic! The faculty were greeting students by name, and the staff went the extra mile to make everyone feel at home, including myself and our entire crew. Filming your episode was just so special, but what struck me most was how TJC truly feels like a family.”

TJC President and CEO Dr. Juan E. Mejia said, “We are thrilled to participate in ‘The College Tour’ and share the many parts of our campus experience that make TJC unique. It is a great opportunity to share our Black and Gold spirit with the world and offer a look into life as an Apache.”

TJC student Garrett Wilbanks was one of several students featured in the episode.

An electrical/electronic controls major from Amarillo, Wilbanks knows the value of discipline, focus, and adaptability — skills honed during his service in the United States Navy.

Now, he’s channeling that experience into a promising new career, thanks to an internship-turned-full-time job at Tyler Pipe and a strong educational foundation from TJC.

“One week, I would be learning about automation or programmable logic controllers in class; and the next, I’d be troubleshooting that same equipment at work,” Wilbanks said.

“Everything I learned in class applied directly to my internship.”

His favorite hands-on experience during the internship?

Replacing control panels and relocating terminals to streamline troubleshooting — tasks that showcase both the practical training he received and his ability to think critically in realworld settings.

In his “College Tour” segment, Garrett described his journey from military service to the classroom to a professional career.

He shared how his military background, paired with TJC’s supportive environment, helped launch his second career.

“When I got out of the service, I wanted a college that would give me real-world training and a strong support system, and I found that at TJC,” Wilbanks said during his TV interview. “TJC took what I learned in the Navy and put a solid future with it and gave me an industrial electrician career that I’m proud of.”

Located in the Energy Center at TJC West, the Electrical/ Electronic Controls Technology program is designed with industry input to provide students with the in-demand skills needed for high-tech careers. The program emphasizes hands-on learning in modern labs and close mentorship from instructors who bring real-world experience to the classroom.

‟When I got out of the service, I wanted a college that would give me real-world training and a strong support system, and I found that at TJC.” Garrett Willbanks This past summer, Wilbanks joined Tyler Pipe, a leading manufacturer of cast-iron pipes and fittings, as an intern through TJC’s Electrical/Electronic Controls Technology program. What started as a summer opportunity quickly turned into something more: The company was so impressed with Garrett’s work ethic and technical abilities that they offered him a full-time position. Even more impressive, Tyler Pipe is working with him to accommodate his school schedule so he can complete his degree.

Program graduates often begin at the upper apprentice level, and with additional on-the-job experience and specialized training, they can advance to journeyman and senior technician roles.

As Garrett continues balancing his full-time position at Tyler Pipe with his final classes at TJC, his story serves as an inspiration to other students — especially those transitioning from military to civilian life.

“If you’re thinking about skipping college, don’t,” Wilbanks advised. “You never know what doors it can open. It definitely changed my life.”

From defending the country to keeping an East Texas industry running strong, he is living proof that the right mix of determination, opportunity and education can lead to lasting success.

TJC grad’s interest in space leads to career at NASA’s Scientific Balloon Facility By Elise Mullinix From an early age, Caleb Jones dreamed of working in the space industry.

“I grew up closely watching NASA’s shuttle program, and I also have an uncle who works for NASA,” said Jones, a Tyler native.

Tyler Junior College’s Electronic/Electrical Controls program helped him get started on his dream. “I wanted to start a career in aerospace electronics, and TJC was the only college that offered a classical electronics program that was accessible to me,” he said.

Jones earned his TJC Certificate of Proficiency in electrical/electronic controls technology while working a full-time job in retail.

After completing his TJC credential in 2018, he was hired by Orbital ATK/NorthropGrumman to work as a contract employee at NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility

in Palestine, TX. In 2020, NASA hired him to work in the facility’s frontline management.

As planning and manufacturing supervisor, Jones plans and procures the hardware needs for upcoming missions and manages the manufacturing process of a team of 13 highly trained electronic technicians/ assemblers. Having previously worked as a lead technician, he also provides technical expertise on equipment and instrumentation.

“The NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility provides a low-cost, long duration, and stable near-space test bed for scientific research,” he explained.

“Scientific experiments can range from planetary science, Earth science, astrophysics, heliophysics, or observational research utilizing telescopes and imaging instrumentation. Deep space observation missions may look at things like black holes, pulsars, distant galaxies, and nebulae.”

He also encourages asking for assistance when you’re feeling stuck.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” he said.

“Whether that is in the form of financial assistance, tutoring, or help with mental/ emotional struggles. Always reach out to whomever you can if you feel like you’re struggling.”

About the program The Electrical/Electronic Controls Technology program at TJC provides students with electrical and controls skills that are needed in a variety of professions.

Located in the Energy Center at TJC West, the program was designed and constructed with community support for training for the jobs of tomorrow and beyond. Skills labs harbor the latest training and testing gear to fully equip students to begin their careers with confidence.

Antarctica is beautiful but incredibly dangerous, and the environment is harsh, requiring special equipment to be able to work in such a frigid environment.”

Ever eager to advance in his career, Jones is currently working on his Bachelor of Science in supply chain and operations management at Western Governors University and is on track to graduate next year.

Students explore their interests in components that make up electrical systems such as motors, circuits, electrical codes and automated systems. Faculty are industry veterans with a passion for teaching and bring their real-world knowledge into the classroom to help ensure student success in the field.

Program graduates will normally start at the upper apprentice level. With sufficient training both on the job and specialized training provided by the controls manufacturers, an employee can progress to journeyman and senior technician.

For Alissha Decker, education was never just about a degree — it was about setting an example, defying the odds and creating a better life not only for herself but for her children.

‟Being at TJC helped me realize that age doesn't mean anything. No teacher A proud native of Spearfish, South Dakota, or student treated me Decker moved to Tyler 17 years ago. She brought her own brand of resilience, ambition differently. TJC is about and heart to Tyler Junior College, where she making sure those who pursued her degree in criminal justice as a first-generation college student — and more want it, get it.” Alissha Decker importantly, as a single mom of five kids, ages 16, 17, 19, 20 and 24.

“I chose TJC because I was a working single mother,” she said. “I needed somewhere that was close to home and would accommodate my personal life.”

That decision would turn out to be transformative.

While at TJC, Alissha didn’t just attend classes — she grew as a leader. As president of the Criminal Justice Student Association, she helped bring learning to life beyond the classroom walls.

BREAKING BARRIERS

Not only did she break ground as the first in her family to attend college, but she also created a powerful moment of generational achievement: This past May, she graduated alongside her oldest daughter, Olivia Coppler, who earned an associate degree in general studies.

“We walked the stage just hours apart,” she recalled with pride. Coppler now attends UT Tyler, majoring in biochemistry. Her 20-yearold daughter, Brianna Decker, is attending TJC and studying to be a paramedic.

Alissha Decker, a single mom of five, is pursuing her dream of working in the criminal justice field.

“It was one of the best experiences I had at TJC, and I urge everyone to join that association — even if they’re not criminal justice majors,” she said. “We learned about the Fifth Circuit Court, our amendments, what it’s like in prison, and even visited the site of the Oklahoma City bombing. We did all of that without sitting in a classroom and being lectured.”

Her leadership helped make criminal justice education more engaging, personal and impactful for her peers.

Empowered by mentors Decker credits much of her growth at TJC to the mentorship and guidance of two standout

faculty members: Professors Jason Waller and James Ledet.

“They always had great advice, told stories that made it easier to understand the curriculum, and their teaching style was interactive — which was way more effective for me,” she said. Their approach not only made the material resonate but also reinforced her confidence as she prepared for a career in law enforcement.

Today, she serves as a corrections officer for the Gregg County Sheriff’s Office, taking the knowledge and skills she gained at TJC into the real world of criminal justice. But her journey isn’t over. She plans to apply for the police academy in the coming year, with her sights set on becoming a sworn peace officer.

Her next academic step? She hopes to attend The University of Texas at Tyler, a choice made with her children in mind. “Because I still have children I am raising, I have to stay close to home, while also furthering my career,” she said.

A message to future students When asked what she’ll remember most about TJC, her answer is simple but powerful: “Being at TJC helped me realize that age doesn’t mean anything. No teacher or student treated me differently. They accommodated my work hours, and I was able to graduate with a college degree while working a full-time job. TJC is about making sure those who want it, get it.”

To those just starting their college journey, she offers this heartfelt advice: “Stay focused. Talk to your instructors — they are there to help you. Study groups will help you so much. Find that one friend you can always count on, because there will be times you want to quit, but they won’t let you.

There is so much out in the world for you, but you have to actually want it.”

Alissha Decker’s story is a testament to the power of education and the strength of a determined heart. As she continues to protect and serve her community, her time at TJC stands as the foundation for a future built on purpose and passion.

CAREER BOOST

Marc Patrick’s path didn’t come from following a straight line but through trial, redirection and an eventual passion for a trade he once knew nothing about.

For two years, Patrick, of Kaufman, TX, commuted more than an hour each way to attend Tyler Junior College’s Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology (HVAC) program. What began as a search for stability turned into a clear vision for a longterm career in ammonia refrigeration — a critical but often overlooked part of the food supply chain.

“I was looking at trade schools in Tyler and Waxahachie, and I just wasn’t big on the Waxahachie area,” Patrick said. “So, I chose Tyler. It was a good decision.”

After completing an entry-level HVAC certificate last spring, he earned an advanced certificate in May and will be returning for the specialized ammonia refrigeration track.

He also works in refrigeration maintenance at the Tyson Foods plant in Dallas.

His goal: to become a Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator (CARO) and eventually, a Certified Refrigeration Technician (CRT), which will require another five years of operator experience.

Patrick’s journey didn’t start in the trades. He graduated high school in 2008 and briefly attended Navarro College with hopes of becoming a nurse. When that didn’t work out, he spent a year working at a pharmacy — a time he describes as heading “toward rock bottom.”

“I joined the Navy for a new start and to get out of Corsicana,” he said.

He enlisted in May 2013, serving nearly a

In the Navy, he served as a gunner’s mate while working toward a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice — initially aiming for a career in law enforcement. But during his studies, he realized it wasn’t the right fit.

“That lifestyle just isn’t for everyone,” he said, so he set about charting a new future, which turned out to be HVAC — and more specifically, ammonia refrigeration.

“I was finishing the light commercial and residential HVAC track when they introduced the ammonia program,” he said. “It looked like something I’d really enjoy, and I was right. It’s all on a much larger scale.”

Unlike residential HVAC systems, which cool homes to a comfortable 75 degrees, ammonia refrigeration involves massive, industrialsized equipment capable of cooling entire facilities to sub-zero temperatures — often to store perishable food. It’s an industry that plays a silent but vital role in global food security.

“Without refrigeration, you lose the ability to

store and move that amount of food across the country,” he explained. “Places like Tyson Foods — they have huge plants, and these can’t even be near neighborhoods due to the risks involved with ammonia systems. There are laws about that.”

Staffing in the field has declined in recent years.

“The HVAC community is small, and the ammonia field within that it is even smaller,” he said. “A lot of people are retiring, and not many are coming in to replace them.”

He’s determined to be part of the solution.

He’s currently studying for the Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator (CARO) exam and plans to gain five years of field experience to become a technician.

Balancing life isn’t easy. Patrick has three children — 8-year-old twins and an adopted 3-year-old son — and for a while, he juggled school and work. But something had to give.

“As things progressed, I couldn’t maintain the balance. I had to stop working to focus on school,” he said. “I’m doing this for my family, too.”

He credits TJC’s instructors for their support and flexibility. “They’re awesome — very knowledgeable and they really work with our schedules. You can tell this is what they’re meant to do.”

Looking ahead, he encourages anyone considering a trade to explore their options and keep an open mind.

“If you had told me 10 years ago that I would go into HVAC, I would have laughed,” he said.

“But once I started learning about it — how it works and all that goes into it — it really grabbed my attention.”

After earning an advanced HVAC certificate from TJC in May, Marc Patrick now works in refrigeration maintenance at the Tyson Foods plant in Dallas. He will be returning to TJC for the specialized ammonia refrigeration track.

White Oak city manager hones his skills in TJC Public Administration program When Jimmy Purcell first stepped into public service in 1990 as a firefighter/EMT with the City of Gladewater, he had no idea that one day he would be at the helm of an entire city.

Now, as the city manager of White Oak, Purcell oversees every department in a growing community of 6,500 residents — proving that a willingness to keep learning can chart a new path in public service.

Purcell’s public safety career spans more than three decades, beginning with the Gladewater Fire Department, where he rose through the ranks to captain. Along the way,

he attended the police academy at night, earning his certification and serving as a reserve police officer. In 1998, he joined the Longview Fire Department as a firefighter/ paramedic, eventually becoming deputy fire marshal and serving as a fire/arson investigator until his retirement in 2019.

But retirement didn’t last long.

White Oak, a small East Texas city neighboring Longview, was seeking to transition its volunteer fire department to include a paid chief. Purcell was hired in August 2019 and served in that role for three years. As he got to know city officials, including the mayor, another opportunity emerged: the upcoming retirement of the city manager.

“I never thought I’d be in this kind of position — it wasn’t on my radar at all,” Purcell said.

“But I prayed about it with my wife, and when the time came, I applied and was chosen out of 13 applicants.”

In 2022, Purcell officially became the city manager of White Oak, overseeing 55 employees and every major municipal function — from police and fire services

“I wear a lot of hats,” he said. “In a small city, you have to. I’m the city manager, but I also serve as the human resources director and the economic development director.”

While Purcell’s background in emergency services gave him leadership experience, municipal management was entirely new territory. That’s when a familiar face stepped in to help.

Mike Bishop, a former Longview police chief and longtime acquaintance, had become a faculty member in Tyler Junior College’s Public Administration program. Knowing Purcell was new to city government, Bishop suggested he look into the program.

Purcell enrolled and completed the 18-hour Public Administration Certificate entirely online while balancing his full-time responsibilities as city manager.

“TJC made it easy,” Purcell said. “The courses were all online and specifically tailored to public service. I learned a lot about how cities function — things I wish I had known before stepping into this role.”

He completed six courses over two semesters, calling them “tremendously helpful” for managing city operations and understanding government processes.

The experience was so impactful that Purcell encouraged his assistant and finance director to enroll as well.

As a city manager, his philosophy centers around people — his staff and the citizens they serve. “My main job is to make sure my employees are happy and have the tools they need to serve the public,” he said. “If they’re supported, everything else falls into place.”

As for the future, Purcell is already looking to expand his knowledge further by taking additional courses through TJC. His message to others considering a move into public service or leadership is simple: “Take the leap, especially if you’re working full time. TJC makes it possible.”

ABOUT THE TJC PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM The Public Administration program prepares students for career opportunities in social service organizations, community agencies and in public sector positions.

Graduates of the program may find employment in city planning, non-profit organizations, community action agencies, human services, criminal justice, health services or other public sector settings, and in other entry-level or mid-manager level positions, as well as to conduct research.

TRIUMPH OF THE SPIRIT TJC engineering student overcomes setbacks and discovers a new purpose

When life demands a reset, it takes courage to take a leap of faith — and even more to rebuild from scratch.

That’s exactly what Camron Liston-Wallace did when he enrolled at Tyler Junior College.

After facing a life-altering medical event in high school — a bilateral amputation — and experiencing a disruption in his academic journey, he chose TJC as the place to rediscover himself, his strengths and his purpose.

“Honestly, I chose TJC because I needed a fresh start,” said Liston-Wallace, who was born in Japan, raised across the U.S., and graduated high school in Washington — but now calls Texas home. “My GPA in high school wasn’t where I wanted it to be, and after years of medical challenges, I wasn’t sure where to begin. TJC felt like the right place to rebuild myself and figure out what I wanted to become.”

Originally drawn to the programming side of game development — a blend of curiosity and personal interest — he found himself fascinated by how systems work beneath the surface. That fascination evolved into a desire to not just understand systems, but to design and improve them. It was this drive that eventually led him to enroll in the Texas A&M Engineering Academy at TJC. “I wanted to do more than just understand and apply — I wanted to create,” he said. “When I learned about the Engineering Academy, it felt like the last puzzle piece I needed to reach my goals.”

students to take engineering courses at TJC while co-enrolled with Texas A&M. It provides a more affordable and supportive route to an engineering degree — a perfect fit for someone ready to reignite their educational journey.

In addition to his leadership roles, he was named “Emerging Student Leader of the Year” at the 2024-25 Student Leadership Banquet and was first runner-up for Fall 2024 Homecoming King — a testament to how deeply he’s impacted the TJC community.

As a first-generation college student, his challenges were more than academic — they were cultural, emotional and logistical. But TJC provided the foundation he needed.

From TJC to Aggieland With his time at TJC drawing to a close, he’s preparing to transfer to Texas A&M University, where he’ll continue pursuing his engineering degree. But his goals go far beyond a diploma.

“My ultimate goal is to redefine and redesign current ADA standards. I want to design physical spaces that go beyond checking a box — spaces that are accessible and, more importantly, usable by everyone.”

Through engineering, leadership and advocacy, he’s paving the way for a more inclusive world in which accessibility is the standard and not the exception.

‘THE HILLTOP’ How a student’s ambition and a generous gift opened the door to SMU

When Sarah Conner stepped onto the Southern Methodist University campus this fall, she carried with her not only dreams of becoming a lawyer but also a powerful reminder that generosity can change lives.

Conner is the third Tyler Junior College graduate to benefit from a visionary gift that bridges the distance between a strong start and a bold future.

In 2023, the institutions jointly announced the creation of the Brookshire SMU/TJC Transfer Scholarship, made possible by an endowment gift from longtime East Texas philanthropists, Ann and Brad Brookshire, of Tyler.

Inspired by SMU’s $1.5 billion “SMU Ignited: Boldly Shaping Tomorrow” campaign — which prioritizes access for transfer, firstgeneration, and underrepresented students — the Brookshires saw a chance to help TJC students dream even bigger.

“When SMU announced the capital campaign, it was to address transfer students, first-generation and minority students — and we have all of those students at TJC,” said Ann Brookshire, a TJC trustee and SMU alumna. “The potential for someone to

The Brookshire Scholarship provides $10,000 annually, or $5,000 per semester, for up to five terms or until graduation. It is awarded in addition to existing financial aid, with preference given to business students who demonstrate financial need.

A scholar with purpose Sarah Conner embodies the kind of drive and potential the Brookshires hoped to support. A graduate of Cumberland Academy, she chose to attend TJC after earning the TJC Promise scholarship. “I heard it was a great school,” she said — and for her, it was.

personally. “TJC taught me how to be a good student and how to navigate college,” she said. “The attentive and caring staff and the abundance of resources offered to students made a big impact.”

One faculty member, in particular, stood out: “My biggest influence was my professor for speech (Al Ippolito) — we called him Professor I. He taught a lot about confidence and character, and how to present yourself. That’s something I’ll carry with me.”

TRANSFORMING LIVES Her initial interest in SMU came through volleyball — watching games piqued her curiosity and she began researching the university more deliberately. But what solidified her choice were SMU’s exceptional business and law programs plus its reputation for preparing students for professional success. “Their high student employment rates after graduation really impressed me,” she said.

She entered SMU’s Cox School of Business this fall, with her eyes firmly set on the future: “After getting a bachelor’s in business, I want to study criminal law and become a lawyer.”

Gratitude that runs deep To Conner, the Brookshire family’s support represents more than just financial aid — it’s the belief in her potential.

“I would like to give the Brookshire family a big thank you,” she said. “With their support, my educational goals are more in reach. I am so blessed to be able to attend a university such as SMU, and this scholarship has made it more possible. I am honored and very grateful.”

GRIT, GRACE AND GRADUATION A family triumphs at TJC When Starla Taylor walked across the Tyler Junior College stage in May, she wasn’t walking alone.

She was joined by her sister, Janese Largent, and her daughter, Destiny Taylor — three women sharing one powerful message: It’s never too late to rewrite your future.

Originally from Springhill, La., Starla has lived in Hideaway for the past seven years. Four years ago, she decided to eventually take over her uncle’s septic system installation company and needed the knowledge to do it right.

That decision led her to TJC, where she pursued a degree in business management and earned a certification in bookkeeping.

“I chose TJC because it was close to home, and I could work at my own pace,” she said.

“That was important to me since I run a business.”

She is a first-generation college graduate.

“My mom went to college but never finished,” she said. “So, for me, my sister and my daughter to have all walked together, that’s something special.”

The journey wasn’t easy, but it was meaningful. After overcoming addiction, Starla returned home determined to change her life. She’s now nine years sober. Her sister, Janese, five years clean, joined her

Don’t quit over something that can be fixed.” Starla Taylor at TJC a year later, earning credentials in EMT and medic courses. And when Starla’s daughter Destiny graduated high school two years ago, she decided to pursue her college education alongside her mother and aunt, majoring in general studies with an interest in psychology.

“We never thought this would happen,” Starla reflected. “It’s a testament to God that we are here. To have my daughter with me — after getting her back and everything we went through — it means so much.”

She credits business professors Don Blaine, Jennifer Coon and Joshua Edinger as key influences during her time at TJC.

Starla plans to take a year or two to focus on her business before transferring to The University of Texas at Tyler to pursue her bachelor’s degree in business. But she’s not stopping there. “My ultimate goal is to get my bachelor’s and then go after my license to become an addiction counselor,” she said.

“That’s my end goal with all of this.”

Reflecting on her TJC experience, Starla said she’ll carry every part of it with her — especially “being in class with students my daughter’s age, becoming friends with them, being on campus and surrounded by the hustle and bustle of everyone doing everything.”

For students just starting their college journey, she offers this honest advice: “Don’t give up. It’s going to get hard. There’s going to be a three-month-long assignment you forgot about. Talk to your professors and be honest — they will work with you. Don’t quit over something that can be fixed.”

Starla’s story is about second chances and the belief that education can be a path to healing and positive change — not just for one person but for an entire family.

“It really is a testament to God that we are here to be able to do this together,” she said.

“TJC prepared me well,” she said. “I’ve already started applying the skills I learned here.”
