At Ciúnas Learning, we’re on a mission to support young people in developing habits, resilience, and wisdom that help them flourish now and in the future. After five years of delivering wellbeing education through our online programme Project One Sky, we’ve now launched a new book that goes deeper into the formation of character, habits, and reflective judgment: The Climb and The Return
The Climb and The Return tells the story of students embarking on a mountain journey learning not just how to climb high, but how to return with perspective, steady habits, and meaningful reflection. The book blends narrative with practical tools and insights designed for Transition Year students and schools looking to support intentional growth in wellbeing, mindset, and personal development.
What began as Project One Sky, an interactive wellbeing programme used by schools over the last five years, has grown into a richer formation resource. The Climb and The Return builds on this foundation, bringing together engaging storytelling with evidence-informed habit practices and reflective activities that help students explore:
• Self-awareness and emotional navigation
• Purpose and growth mindset
• Daily habits that sustain wellbeing
• Connection with others and community
This book is purpose-built for young people in a world of rapid change. Rather than offering superficial tips, it helps learners explore why habits matter, how they shape who we become, and how resilience and discernment grow through practice.

Transition Year is a unique time to pause, reflect, explore new ideas, and build habits that last beyond the classroom The Climb and The Return offers both narrative engagement and practical reflection giving students a meaningful companion for personal and group growth.
We’re honoured to share this with the TY Hub community, and we hope it inspires TY students and educators across Ireland to engage deeply in their own journeys of formation

Transition, 5th and 6th year students

A curriculum-aligned, classroom-ready Transition Year programme that builds awareness of financial literacy, sustainability and insurance careers — at no cost to schools.
Transition Year gives schools the freedom to prioritise personal development, life skills, and career awareness - but sourcing structured, high-quality content that genuinely engages students can be challenging.
The ‘Insurance Literacy’ Transition Year Programme from The Insurance Institute of Ireland has been designed specifically to meet that need: an online, classroom-ready programme that supports TY learning goals while minimising teachers’ preparation time.
Importantly, the programme is completely free of charge, making it an accessible option for schools.
‘A classroom-ready TY module linking financial literacy, sustainability and career awareness in one structured programme.’
What is involved in this programme?
Insurance Literacy is a 3-module programme covering:

In this module, students explore how financial decisions affect their daily lives, future independence, and wider communities. It supports: consumer awareness and financial planning discussions an examination of climate risk and the insurance industry’s response
Because this module’s content relates to everyday scenarios, students quickly see the relevance. Interactive scenarios, discussion prompts and reflection activities make this particularly useful for cross-curricular project work.
This module explores the world of insurance, its unique function, terminology and impact. Many students don’t realise how central insurance is to modern life Homes, travel, sports events, businesses, technology, and even climate resilience all depend on it. By connecting insurance to students’ everyday experiences, this module turns what might seem like a complex topic into something relatable and surprisingly interesting. Curious students can access bonus content covering core insurance principles and products, and the role of the Central Bank in protecting consumers This module’s content also supports the Junior and Leaving Certificate business subjects.
A key objective during TY is to expand students’ awareness of future opportunities. This module introduces the various insurance careers - including broking, claims and underwriting - many of which students may not be familiar with and as a result may never previously have considered. It outlines the educational pathways into these careers including apprenticeships and professional qualifications - both of which represent the ‘earn and learn’ model. This module supports career guidance planning while helping students connect school learning with future possibilities

Schools should choose this programme because it is:
1. Built around TY curriculum priorities
The content has been developed in accordance with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment’s template and guidelines.
The programme supports the wider goals of TY by helping students: build confidence and independence in learning develop critical thinking and decision-making skills connect classroom topics to real-world issues strengthen their TY portfolio with a recognised Digital Badge
This programme integrates themes relevant to Business Studies, Geography, SPHE, Wellbeing, Economics, Politics and Society, and Career Guidance; making it easy to incorporate into existing TY planning and schemes of work.
Teachers can deliver the modules in the classroom or allow students to move through the content independently.
2. Inclusive, relevant and student-centred
Because TY groups include diverse learning needs and interests, inclusivity is essential. The programme assumes no prior knowledge of finance, sustainability or insurance, making it equally suitable for academic, practical and mixed-pathway schools.
Students complete interactive activities, quizzes and reflective tasks, and earn a Digital Badge that strengthens their TY portfolio.
Its emphasis on student voice - encouraging learners to reflect on their own decisions, values and future goals - supports TY’s broader maturity and confidence-building aims
For teachers seeking programmes that genuinely connect with student concerns about climate change, financial independence, and future careers, this programme’s relevance is one of its strongest features.
3. Designed for flexible delivery that reduces teacher workload
The programme is intentionally designed for easy classroom implementation as it is: fully online modular and self-paced written in accessible language approximately 10 hours of teaching/learning time interactive and suitable for mixed-ability groups usable for individual, paired, or whole-class work
Teachers can use it as: a standalone TY module part of a careers programme or business studies or SPHE module a financial literacy or sustainability unit.
4. A signature TY experience
Schools often look for one or two standout initiatives that define their TY offering each year Because this programme combines life skills such as financial literacy and climate awareness with career learning, it has the potential to become one of those signature experiences.
It delivers structured educational value while also developing students as future consumers and giving them knowledge they will genuinely use long after TY ends
And because it is free, it can be implemented without impacting departmental budgets or student contributions.
‘Designed for Transition Year, relevant for students, and completely free for schools.’

To access ready-to-use, curriculum-aligned content that supports personal development and career exploration and is delivered via a modern, interactive learning journey that feels relevant to students’ lives, their future choices, and the global challenges they care about, register for Insurance Literacy, The Insurance Institute of Ireland’s TY Programme, by scanning this QR code.

As Ireland’s population ages, the conversations we have around dementia are becoming more important than ever. Yet one group, young people has often been overlooked in these discussions, despite the significant role they play in supporting and understanding loved ones affected by the condition. The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) is working to change that narrative through its award winning Creating a Dementia Inclusive Generation Youth Programme, now open for schools to join for the 2026–2027 academic year.
This nationwide initiative is designed to introduce students to the realities of brain health, healthy ageing and dementia in an engaging, accessible and empowering way. Since launching, the programme has reached over 13,000 students across the country, many of whom have gone on to create meaningful Transition Year (TY) projects, ranging from awareness campaigns and science projects to community action events inspired by their learning. As one of ASI’s flagship youth initiatives, its goal is clear: to help build a generation that understands dementia, challenges stigma and supports a more compassionate and inclusive society.
Whether they realise it or not, young people are deeply connected to dementia One in three knows someone living with the condition, typically a grandparent, though increasingly a parent or guardian These experiences can be confusing and emotionally challenging, especially when young people do not fully understand what dementia is or how it affects behaviour and memory
ASI’s programme aims to fill that gap Offered as an accredited NCCA Micro Module, the course aligns closely with the TY Programme Statement while giving students a solid foundation in empathy, understanding and practical awareness It emphasises not only the science behind dementia, but also the human impact of how it shapes families, how communities can respond and how small changes in awareness can make a big difference in someone’s daily life.

The programme supports key TY learning areas including:
Personal & Social Development: Students gain emotional intelligence, communication skills and an understanding of the lived experiences of people with dementia.
Active Citizenship: Participants learn how to take meaningful action, whether through volunteering, fundraising or community engagement.
Interdisciplinary Learning: Lessons connect naturally with subjects such as biology, ethics, social education and even creative arts.
Teamwork & Critical Thinking: Group activities encourage collaboration, leadership and problem solving.
Wellbeing: Understanding dementia helps students build resilience, compassion and confidence when interacting with older family members or the wider community Beyond classroom learning, the programme offers a valuable stepping stone for students pursuing extracurricular challenges Many students use their new knowledge to develop projects for Gaisce, Young Social Innovators and the Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition From wearable tech designed to support memory, to community events promoting dementia awareness, the Youth Programme has inspired innovative ideas across the country
ASI also provides students with a specially designed Peer Education Booklet, which guides them through the process of designing lesson plans and teaching their classmates. This not only deepens their understanding of the topic but also builds real world skills such as public speaking, leadership, time management and collaborative problem solving. For many students, it beco f th t rewarding aspects of the course.

The Creating a Dementia Inclusive Generation Youth Programme is structured in three flexible phases, allowing schools to adapt it to their own timetable and needs
Students begin with a series of engaging online lessons available in both English and Irish These modules introduce the fundamentals of brain health, ageing and dementia while inviting students to reflect on their own assumptions and experiences
Students become educators themselves, using the Peer Education Toolkit to teach their classmates key concepts and insights This interactive stage strengthens understanding and ensures the learning extends beyond the initial group.
The final stage encourages students to bring their learning beyond the school gates. Whether through fundraising events, awareness campaigns or volunteering (with Garda vetting), students take active steps to support people living with dementia in their own communities.
As dementia continues to rise in Ireland, educating young people is not just beneficial it is essential. The Creating a Dementia Inclusive Generation Youth Programme gives students the knowledge, empathy and confidence to better understand and support those living with dementia. It is a chance to empower the next generation to create a more inclusive, compassionate Ireland starting with awareness, understanding and human connection.

Muireann Bagley shares her journey from first flight to first licence
“If you were born without wings, do nothing to prevent them growing”
I very much doubt Coco Chanel was referring to young people interested in flying airplanes when she said this, but nevertheless, this seems like a good place to start my story. Aviation is a fascinating industry that caught my attention from a very young age and fortunately there was never anyone around me who told me it couldn’t be done.
The first sprouting of my wings started with an extra special present on my 11th birthday. Having graduated from Lego, model airplanes and Meccano sets, I now set my sights on the real thing. With some clever negotiation, whereby my parents would be relieved of the chore of organising a birthday party, I would instead take to the air with my Instructor Laura Russell in Waterford Aero Club.
But that was the end of that… an eleven-year-old doesn’t have much earning capacity and I was grounded. But a passion was ignited. And so, I saved whatever money I could get my hands on, read any books relating to aviation I could find, watched endless videos and frequently had to be dragged off Microsoft flight sim.
I was fortunate to win a week’s scholarship sponsored by Delta at the National Flight Academy at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola where the Blue Angels are based. This kept the passion burning and created a whole new interest in the military side.

By TY I had a plan. In addition to arranging all work experience in aviation related areas (Big shout out to the Air Corps, AirNav and SimTech), I also set myself the challenge of completing my PPL. With a stroke of absolute luck, Navan Airfield took me under their wing and even more
amazingly I was allocated an outstanding Instructor, Capt. Blaithin Wilson to guide me into the air. With Blaithin, my wings began to stretch and grow as she pushed and empowered me to embrace challenges and to be the best pilot I could be. With a focus on professional pilot competencies and threat and error management, she has helped lay the foundations for a potential future flying career.

I enjoyed the entire process of becoming a private pilot and even looked forward to studying for the ground school exams With the help of Brian, Stephen & Karl at ASG I was delighted to get through with first time passes on all subjects. Even the computers failing in the exam centre couldn’t stop me. The big hurdle of course when flying in Ireland is always the weather. My final handling test was scheduled for my birthday (the earliest date I could actually take the test). Looking for nice weather in Ireland in February was always going to be a bit of an ask.
The joy of seeing bright blue skies that morning helped offset the nerves of sitting the test, but I was aware of the challenge ahead. Thorough and tough, no stone was left unturned as my examiner put me through stalls, simulated engine failures, glide approaches, navigation and diversion exercises. There was a huge sense of relief when he finally shook my hand and told me that I had passed. One flight test under my belt, but I hope to be sitting many more, next time as a professional pilot
Being one of the youngest pilots to pass the test, my 15 mins of fame quickly followed with invites for radio and press interviews It was however particularly special to be invited by Fiona in AvCon to speak at the 2025 event. Having been in the audience as a student the year before, I was now elevated to the stage!
With my Loreto Balbriggan classmates and teachers in the audience and joined on the stage by amazing role models F/O Susan Farrell and Airwoman Katie Bergin, it was an experience that I will never forget.
For many, the AvCon event maybe just be the start of exploring new horizons and feeling those wings beginning to grow. Thanks to Fiona and the team for providing this amazing opportunity and for continuing to take it to greater heights each year

By First Aid Coaching for TY Hub
Let’s talk about something important your mental health You’ve probably heard people say, “It’s okay not to be okay,” and they’re right. Your thoughts, feelings, and emotions are just as important as your physical health And just like we learn first aid for accidents and injuries, we can also learn mental health first aid simple ways to take care of our minds and help others too.
As a teenager, life can feel like a rollercoaster school, friends, exams, social media, future plans it’s a lot! But the good news is: you ' re not alone Every single person has mental health, and looking after it is a skill something you canget better at with the right tools and support.
Talking to someone you trust a friend, teacher, coach, or parent can make a huge difference You don’t have to go through tough times alone
Exercise doesn’t have to be intense. A walk, dance, or kickabout with friends helps your brain release feel-good chemicals
Try to get into a regular sleep routine. Your brain and body recharge when you rest, and it seriously boosts your mood and focus
Social media is fun, but too much can mess with your head. Try taking mini-breaks and unfollow anything that doesn’t make you feel good
To yourself and others. A kind message, a smile, or just listening can lift someone ’ s day including your own
At First Aid Coaching, we believe mental health first aid is just as important as CPR It starts with awareness, action, and compassion. So take time for your mind, check in with your friends, and remember: you ’ ve got this.

TYHub was absolutely thrilled to be back at the LogisTYcs event in the Curragh – and this year’s edition was bigger, better, and even more exciting than before! Organised by the Department of Transport, this fantastic initiative is now in its second year and once again proved just how powerful it is when schools and industry come together under one roof.
From the moment the event kicked off, the energy was electric. We had the pleasure of speaking with so many of our amazing students and teachers – some we’ve known for a while, and some new faces joining the TYHub community for the first time. It was a real celebration of connection, conversation, and career discovery.
This was no ordinary careers event – LogisTYcs 2025 was gamified and packed with hands-on, high-energy experiences that brought the world of transport and logistics to life in a way that truly captured imaginations. Students had the chance to win a Mondello Driving Experience, test their reflexes and decision-making with the Virtual Driving Hub, and climb into virtual cabs of trucks and heavy machinery for an unforgettable experience behind the wheel.

It wasn’t just about fun and games though – it was about futures. The logistics and transport industries are evolving rapidly, and events like this give students a firsthand look at just how exciting and promising this sector really is. From cutting-edge technology to global supply chain roles, the opportunities are vast and growing.

We were also delighted to sit down with some incredible people working in the industry to gather insights, stories, and advice for the next generation. These exclusive interviews will be released soon on the TYHub Let's Talk Podcast – so stay tuned for some inspiring conversations that give students a deeper look into life in logistics and transport.

A huge thank you to the Department of Transport for having us back again this year and for creating such a powerful platform for connection and discovery. TYHub is proud to support initiatives that open doors and minds – and we can’t wait to share even more from this event in the weeks ahead.
The future is moving fast – and TYHub is right there with it.

It was a remarkably busy month, comprised of engaging and informative sessions that allowed participants to cover a range of key topics in a short period of time while interacting with other students from various parts of the globe. Last year, Transition Year students were able to take part for the first time Not only did these students enthusiastically get involved, but the feedback we have received, and the interest in this year’s programme, has been extremely rewarding.
In 2025/2026, the Young Future Leaders Programme is expanding once again. This time, the programme is going to run from October 2025 to May 2026, allowing students to have an even richer experience that will see them through their Transition Year, giving them more time to connect with their peers, and cover a broader range of topics. Before Christmas, students will take part in sessions covering career advice, work experience preparation, project management, and public speaking sessions. There will be more sessions added on learning techniques, mental health, safe interest use, and more as we move into 2026.
“The lessons have been highly informative, and I have learned a lot from them. This programme has been a great help in teaching me practical skills that I can use in my future workplace " ~ Young Future Leaders Programme Graduate, 2024.

"I enjoyed the programme immensely, especially the method of teaching as I learned new skills that can help me during my academic journey " ~ Young Future Leaders Programme Graduate, 2024.
How students can take part:
All sessions will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams and students will gain a certificate upon successful completion of the programme All information about how you can register is available on our Young Future Leaders Programme landing page.
At National College of Ireland, we believe in being encouraging and proactive.
