Welcome to the TYHub 25/26 Christmas Ezine!

Our final edition of 2025 is packed with inspiration, student stories, national competitions, and a first look at the exciting journey awaiting all Transition Year students and teachers in 2026
This year has been one of our biggest yet. From record-breaking student engagement across the platform to national events that brought education, industry, and innovation together, TYHub continues to grow as Ireland’s home of opportunities for TY students. AvCon 2025 in October was a standout moment, bringing thousands of students into the oldest hangar in Ireland for a day of aviation, aerospace, learning, and future pathways One student told us “It was the first time I ever saw the inside of an aircraft being repaired – I think I’ve found what I want to do!” That sense of discovery and possibility is exactly what drives TYHub forward
This Ezine is bursting with stories from across 2025 – including student achievements, school highlights, speaker interviews, and national programmes you can get involved in right now You’ll also find important reminders, deadline dates, and new opportunities launching in January.

Muireann Bagley shares her journey from first flight to first licence
“If you were born without wings, do nothing to prevent them growing”
I very much doubt Coco Chanel was referring to young people interested in flying airplanes when she said this, but nevertheless, this seems like a good place to start my story. Aviation is a fascinating industry that caught my attention from a very young age and fortunately there was never anyone around me who told me it couldn’t be done.
The first sprouting of my wings started with an extra special present on my 11th birthday. Having graduated from Lego, model airplanes and Meccano sets, I now set my sights on the real thing. With some clever negotiation, whereby my parents would be relieved of the chore of organising a birthday party, I would instead take to the air with my Instructor Laura Russell in Waterford Aero Club.
But that was the end of that… an eleven-year-old doesn’t have much earning capacity and I was grounded. But a passion was ignited. And so, I saved whatever money I could get my hands on, read any books relating to aviation I could find, watched endless videos and frequently had to be dragged off Microsoft flight sim.
I was fortunate to win a week’s scholarship sponsored by Delta at the National Flight Academy at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola where the Blue Angels are based. This kept the passion burning and created a whole new interest in the military side.

By TY I had a plan. In addition to arranging all work experience in aviation related areas (Big shout out to the Air Corps, AirNav and SimTech), I also set myself the challenge of completing my PPL. With a stroke of absolute luck, Navan Airfield took me under their wing and even more
amazingly I was allocated an outstanding Instructor, Capt. Blaithin Wilson to guide me into the air. With Blaithin, my wings began to stretch and grow as she pushed and empowered me to embrace challenges and to be the best pilot I could be. With a focus on professional pilot competencies and threat and error management, she has helped lay the foundations for a potential future flying career.

I enjoyed the entire process of becoming a private pilot and even looked forward to studying for the ground school exams With the help of Brian, Stephen & Karl at ASG I was delighted to get through with first time passes on all subjects. Even the computers failing in the exam centre couldn’t stop me. The big hurdle of course when flying in Ireland is always the weather. My final handling test was scheduled for my birthday (the earliest date I could actually take the test). Looking for nice weather in Ireland in February was always going to be a bit of an ask.
The joy of seeing bright blue skies that morning helped offset the nerves of sitting the test, but I was aware of the challenge ahead. Thorough and tough, no stone was left unturned as my examiner put me through stalls, simulated engine failures, glide approaches, navigation and diversion exercises. There was a huge sense of relief when he finally shook my hand and told me that I had passed. One flight test under my belt, but I hope to be sitting many more, next time as a professional pilot
Being one of the youngest pilots to pass the test, my 15 mins of fame quickly followed with invites for radio and press interviews It was however particularly special to be invited by Fiona in AvCon to speak at the 2025 event. Having been in the audience as a student the year before, I was now elevated to the stage!
With my Loreto Balbriggan classmates and teachers in the audience and joined on the stage by amazing role models F/O Susan Farrell and Airwoman Katie Bergin, it was an experience that I will never forget.
For many, the AvCon event maybe just be the start of exploring new horizons and feeling those wings beginning to grow. Thanks to Fiona and the team for providing this amazing opportunity and for continuing to take it to greater heights each year

Team TYHub had the absolute privilege of attending this year’s Eco-Unesco Young Environmentalist Awards, and wow – what an incredible day it was!
From primary school innovators to 6th year trailblazers, the finals brought together bright young minds from all four corners of Ireland. The energy in the room was electric – filled with ideas, passion, and determination to make a real difference in our world.

The projects we saw were nothing short of inspiring – from simple, practical solutions that could be rolled out tomorrow, to full-scale business plans with detailed models and serious market potential. Whether it was tackling waste, rethinking energy, or greening up our communities, these students showed us that the future is in very safe hands
And it wasn’t just about serious conversations (though there were plenty of those!). There were laughs, creativity, and even a surprise visit from a Wookiee that kept the spirit fun and memorable. TYHub also recorded some fantastic interviews with finalists, which you’ll be able to hear very soon on the TYHub Podcast – keep an ear out, you don’t want to miss it!

We want to say a huge hats off to all the students, teachers, and parents who brought these projects to life. Your hard work, creativity, and passion are shaping a brighter, greener tomorrow.

My name is Eva Hanaphy, and I’m currently studying radio and podcasting at City of Dublin FET College, Ballyfermot, Southwest Campus. This year, I was incredibly lucky to be selected for a funded Erasmus+ mobility programme, an opportunity that took me to two countries I’d never imagined visiting: Finland and Estonia. What unfolded over those few weeks abroad was nothing short of transformative, both personally and professionally.
The Erasmus+ experience was far more than just a change of scenery As a media student, I found the programme especially valuable because it focused on the growing influence of social media and digital platforms across all industries We explored how these tools are being harnessed in innovative ways worldwide, not just to promote content, but to shape narratives, amplify voices, and build communities. It was inspiring to learn from experts who are at the cutting edge of this ever-evolving landscape Their insights gave me a whole new outlook on where the industry is heading and how I might position myself within it
What struck me most was the global perspective. Being in Finland and Estonia, two countries known for their progressive approaches to technology and education, allowed me to experience how differently things can be done, and how much we can learn from each other
From the moment we landed, I was soaking up new ideas, approaches, and ways of thinking that challenged my assumptions and sparked new ambitions. Before this, neither Finland nor Estonia were on my list of must-see places, but that’s part of what made the experience so special. Discovering these countries through the Erasmus+ lens not as a tourist, but as a learner made the journey even more meaningful. I had the chance to meet people from all over Europe, share stories, compare cultures, and come away with a deeper appreciation for the world outside Ireland.

One of the biggest takeaways for me was how important it is to step outside your comfort zone Ireland is a brilliant place to grow up and study, but it’s easy to forget how small our bubble can be. When you get out into the wider world, your perspective shifts. You start to see your own country differently, what’s working, what could change, and how you might be a part of that change. It’s not always easy to be the one who starts the conversation, but I’ve learned that growth begins when you open your mind to something new

That’s exactly what the Erasmus+ programme offers: a chance to explore, connect, and think differently. It’s not just about travel, it’s about transformation. I’d encourage any young person, especially those in further education, to grab an opportunity like this with both hands. You never know how it might change your life or what ideas you’ll bring back with you.
This experience has inspired me not only to look beyond borders but also to think more boldly about the kind of media I want to create And for that, I’ll always be grateful to Erasmus+, and to the staff at City of Dublin FET College Ballyfermot for making it all possible
“We are delighted in BCFE to have the largest Erasmus plus project in City of Dublin Education and Training board. This year we are sending approximately 70students to Malta, Finland, Spain, Germany and Portugal Students travelling are from animation, media, business visual effects , gaming and art courses. Erasmus is a life changing experience for our learners who travel abroad for a minimum of 2 weeks to work in industry led and vocationally relevant placements Employers now value transversal skills such as communication, teamwork and autonomy- our learners develop these skills while away which makes them incredibly employable for their future careers ”
Caroline
McKenna head of Erasmus
"Erasmus+ offers students an invaluable opportunity to broaden their horizons, both personally and professionally On this recent trip, students of Content Creation and Photography, and Radio Production were able to hone their skills while attending the 2025 International Seminar on Social Media at Helsinki Business College Immersed in a new cultural setting, they gained practical experience and fresh perspectives on digital storytelling and communication I always encourage students to take full advantage of Erasmus+ during their studies, it’s a chance to grow, connect, and learn in ways that extend far beyond the classroom."
Aisling O' Rourke Course Coordinator of Content Creation and Photography at Ballyfermot College

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Ray McAdam, visited the National College of Ireland on 20 November to honour the winners of Dublin Mission Control at the 2025 NASA Space Apps Challenge. Two Dublin teams will now advance to global judging, while a TY student team claimed the Community Choice Award.
“I am hugely impressed by the projects achieved in just two days of hacking, and very proud that two teams are being sent forward from Dublin to compete at a global level. Following this year ’ s theme of Learn, Launch Lead, I can see that participants have learned, they have launched, and I have no doubt that we will see them lead in the future,” said Cllr Ray McAdam, Lord Mayor of Dublin ” - Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Ray McAdam
Team Outer Wilds Ventures and Team KARLverse were announced as Dublin’s global nominees. Outer Wilds Ventures created a platform that turns huge NASA image datasets into accessible, zoomable maps. KARLverse impressed with an AI-powered tool that designs safe, NASA-compliant space habitats for missions to the Moon and Mars.
The Community Choice Award went to Team DeepEnd, three TY students from Cross and Passion College, Kilcullen. Their project, “Astro Defenders,” is an educational game that uses real NASA asteroid data to make space science fun for children.
NCI President Professor Gina Quin said the hackathon reflects NCI’s commitment to realworld learning for all ages, while Dean Professor Paul Stynes praised the creativity and teamwork shown
Space Apps Dublin is supported by InnaLabs, ESA, EU CodeWeek, Space Week Ireland, Give(a)Go, AvCon, Virtual Moon and other partners. Global winners will be announced on 18 December.

By First Aid Coaching for TY Hub
Let’s talk about something important your mental health You’ve probably heard people say, “It’s okay not to be okay,” and they’re right. Your thoughts, feelings, and emotions are just as important as your physical health And just like we learn first aid for accidents and injuries, we can also learn mental health first aid simple ways to take care of our minds and help others too.
As a teenager, life can feel like a rollercoaster school, friends, exams, social media, future plans it’s a lot! But the good news is: you ' re not alone Every single person has mental health, and looking after it is a skill something you canget better at with the right tools and support.
Talking to someone you trust a friend, teacher, coach, or parent can make a huge difference You don’t have to go through tough times alone
Exercise doesn’t have to be intense. A walk, dance, or kickabout with friends helps your brain release feel-good chemicals
Try to get into a regular sleep routine. Your brain and body recharge when you rest, and it seriously boosts your mood and focus
Social media is fun, but too much can mess with your head. Try taking mini-breaks and unfollow anything that doesn’t make you feel good
To yourself and others. A kind message, a smile, or just listening can lift someone ’ s day including your own
At First Aid Coaching, we believe mental health first aid is just as important as CPR It starts with awareness, action, and compassion. So take time for your mind, check in with your friends, and remember: you ’ ve got this.

AvCon returned this year to the historic heart of Irish Military Aviation Ireland’s oldest operational hangar at Casement Aerodrome marking its second consecutive year of extraordinary growth, energy, and impact.
More than 8,000 students attended in person, with a further 8,000+ students joining online from Ireland and across the world. From Transition Year right through to university level, students immersed themselves in a day that blended education, inspiration, and the thrill of realworld aviation.
A Showcase of Innovation, Opportunity & Irish Aviation Pride Students and educators were overwhelmingly positive, many describing the event as “eyeopening” and “career-changing ” This year’s expanded lineup featured:
TheSkyIsNOTTheLimit, ItʼsONLYTheBeginning!
A dynamic roster of speakers from across Europe, representing aviation, aerospace, engineering, defence, and emerging technologies.
An impressive exhibitor platform showcasing airlines, MROs, training organisations, aerospace companies, and education providers Aircraft displays that captivated attendees including the chance sightings of the Irish Air Corps PC-12 and C295 taking off during the event, creating unforgettable moments for many of the students
The collaboration with the Irish Air Corps continues to reinforce Ireland’s proud legacy in military aviation and highlights the country’s commitment to developing the next generation of aviators, engineers, innovators, and industry leaders.
InspiringEurope’sFuture Workforce
AvCon’s hybrid model once again proved its value. With students tuning in from Europe, the UK, and beyond, the event has solidified its status as Ireland’s largest aviation and aerospace careers experience and one of the most forward-thinking in Europe.
Teachers praised the event for its relevance and accessibility, while students engaged enthusiastically with exhibitors, career talks, simulators, and demonstrations The international interest further showcased Ireland’s reputation as a global hub for aviation and aerospace excellence

From its military roots to its thriving commercial and aerospace sectors, Ireland continues to punch above its weight:
The world’s largest aircraft leasing cluster
Advanced aerospace manufacturers supporting Airbus, Boeing and global partners
Aer Lingus’ internationally recognised flight training and operations

A Defence Forces aviation heritage that continues to evolve
AvCon’s mission to bridge the skills gap and energise young talent is now firmly established, and this year’s success proves the appetite is stronger than ever.

FromLegacytoLiftoff:Ireland’s Role in the Aviation and Aerospace Sector
Ireland’s aviation roots run deep.
We’re home to:

• The world’s largest aircraft leasing cluster, managing over 60% of the global leased fleet.
• Aerospace manufacturing firms supplying parts and innovation to Airbus, Boeing, and beyond.
• A national carrier in Aer Lingus, globally recognised for pilot training and safety excellence.
• A proud military aviation tradition through the Irish Air Corps, with some of the most advanced air operations in Europe

But this legacy won’t sustain itself. The aerospace sector is forecast to grow by 8.1% annually, while Ireland faces a critical shortage of qualified engineers, technicians, pilots, and data specialists in aviation.
At AvCon 2026, we’re not just talking about the problem we’re building solutions:
Live Career Talks streamed globally, including first-person insights from pilots, aerospace engineers, ATC, MRO leaders, UAV experts, and defence personnel.
Interactive exhibitions where students build drones, simulate aircraft systems, explore AI in aviation, and meet the companies shaping the skies
B2B and Afterburner Networking Events that connect educators, startups, and industry giants to collaborate in real-time
The skills shortage isn’t a distant threat it’s already impacting productivity, innovation, and growth According to Enterprise Ireland, over 20,000 new skilled aviation workers will be needed across maintenance, engineering, operations, and R&D in the next decade
We don’t need more panel discussions about the skills crisis We need action
We’re calling on airlines, MROs, aerospace manufacturers, air navigation providers, defence forces, drone companies, space tech innovators, and aviationadjacent sectors to show up. Exhibit. Speak. Mentor. Advertise. Fund student transport. Sponsor school places. Hire interns. Create competitions. Film videos. Be visible.
Because students can’t dream of careers they’ve never heard of. Your presence at AvCon 2026 isn’t about ticking a CSR box it’s about safeguarding Ireland’s position in a global industry worth €5 trillion by 2035.
Be Where the Future Takes Off AvCon is where talent meets opportunity and where the future of Ireland’s aviation and aerospace workforce begins. Corporate registrations, speaker opportunities, and exhibitor slots are open now.

The skies were filled with inspiration as over 2,000 students from 40 schools across Ireland tuned in to the Future of Women in Aviation (FWIA) Webinar 2024 an incredible celebration of female achievement, ambition, and opportunity in aviation
Hosted for the third year by Aviation Skillnet and the Irish Centre for Business Excellence (ICBE), the webinar brought together a stellar lineup of nine industry-leading speakers, each with a unique story and pathway to share. From air traffic control and engineering to military aviation and leadership, the speakers illuminated the breadth of roles available and the real-life journeys behind them.
The event was designed not only to inform but to empower. It spotlighted the message that there is a place for everyone especially young women in the ever-evolving world of aviation Key themes included breaking barriers, embracing mentorship, and the power of saying “ yes ” to new challenges.
Among the organisations delighted to take part was TY Hub, a platform dedicated to opening doors for Transition Year students nationwide. TY Hub was thrilled to support this powerful initiative, which aligns perfectly with its mission to spark curiosity and help students explore diverse career pathways.
As the aviation industry continues to evolve, events like FWIA are playing a critical role in ensuring that the future is inclusive, dynamic, and accessible. The FWIA Webinar 2024 was more than just an online event it was a launchpad for dreams and a reminder that the sky is not the limit; it’s only the beginning.

A sunny afternoon out of the office turned into an inspiring and educational experience for Maeve O'Neill and Kumar Kaneswaran as they joined Transition Year students from Presentation Secondary School, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, on their visit to Shannon Aviation Museum.
The school earned this exciting opportunity after participating in the Future of Women in Aviation (FWIA) webinar earlier this year an initiative aimed at encouraging more young women to explore aviation careers. As part of their prize, the students were treated to a day filled with discovery and inspiration.
Proudly sponsored by Aviation Skillnet, the visit gave students an immersive introduction to the world of aviation The day included a guided tour of the museum, where they explored aviation history and innovation, followed by an engaging presentation from David Ward of Atlantic Aviation Group. David shared valuable insights into the aviation apprenticeship programme, giving students a clear look at the career pathways available within the industry.
A highlight for many was the chance to try out the museum ’ s flight simulator an unforgettable, hands-on experience that brought the magic of flight to life!
A huge thank you to Jane Magill and the dedicated team at Shannon Aviation Museum for hosting such a well-organised, fun, and informative day Events like this play a vital role in sparking curiosity and ambition among the next generation of aviation professionals and this one truly took flight.

Take your students on a journey that will ignite their passion for aviation and open up a world of endless possibilities this school year. Shannon Aviation Museum's Transition Year Aviation Career Field Trips offer the thrill and captivation needed to inspire the next generation in a ‘hands-on, minds-on’ fashion.
The Aviation Career Field Trips offer an immersive experience. From the moment your students set foot in Shannon Aviation Museum, they'll be greeted by industry experts and guides. They'll have the chance to explore the development of flight through interactive exhibits, get up close to historic aircraft, and uncover the inner workings of modern aviation technology. At Shannon Aviation Museum, we understand that these early experiences can shape the trajectory of a student's future. Our field trips are designed to kindle a spark of curiosity that might one day lead to fulfilling careers in the aviation industry.

TYHub was absolutely thrilled to be back at the LogisTYcs event in the Curragh – and this year’s edition was bigger, better, and even more exciting than before! Organised by the Department of Transport, this fantastic initiative is now in its second year and once again proved just how powerful it is when schools and industry come together under one roof.
From the moment the event kicked off, the energy was electric. We had the pleasure of speaking with so many of our amazing students and teachers – some we’ve known for a while, and some new faces joining the TYHub community for the first time. It was a real celebration of connection, conversation, and career discovery.
This was no ordinary careers event – LogisTYcs 2025 was gamified and packed with hands-on, high-energy experiences that brought the world of transport and logistics to life in a way that truly captured imaginations. Students had the chance to win a Mondello Driving Experience, test their reflexes and decision-making with the Virtual Driving Hub, and climb into virtual cabs of trucks and heavy machinery for an unforgettable experience behind the wheel.

It wasn’t just about fun and games though – it was about futures. The logistics and transport industries are evolving rapidly, and events like this give students a firsthand look at just how exciting and promising this sector really is. From cutting-edge technology to global supply chain roles, the opportunities are vast and growing.

We were also delighted to sit down with some incredible people working in the industry to gather insights, stories, and advice for the next generation. These exclusive interviews will be released soon on the TYHub Let's Talk Podcast – so stay tuned for some inspiring conversations that give students a deeper look into life in logistics and transport.

A huge thank you to the Department of Transport for having us back again this year and for creating such a powerful platform for connection and discovery. TYHub is proud to support initiatives that open doors and minds – and we can’t wait to share even more from this event in the weeks ahead.
The future is moving fast – and TYHub is right there with it.

I know from experience when you're in aviation, whether you're studying or on the tools, your brain is constantly switched on. Exams just add another layer of pressure. The workload, the stress, the temptation to live off caffeine and fast food... it’s a tough phase, and your energy can take a serious hit if you’re not careful.
I work with aircraft technicians, engineers, pilots etc helping them stay fit, healthy, and mentally switched on through the challenges of the job (and the exam halls). So here are six simple things I’d recommend to keep your body and brain firing on all cylinders during exam season:
1. Drink More Water Than You Think You Need
It sounds basic, but most students are low-key dehydrated all the time. Water affects everything from memory to mood. Aim for at least 2 litres a day especially if you ’ re smashing coffees to stay awake. Keep a bottle with you while studying and refill it like it’s part of your checklist

2. Don’t Sacrifice Sleep for Study
You’re not going to retain anything if you ’ re surviving on 4–5 hours of broken sleep. Your brain consolidates memory when you ' re resting. Try to get 7–9 hours each night, and if you ’ ve had a rough one, even a 20minute nap can bring your focus back online.
3. Move Your Body Every Day
You don’t need to hit the gym for hours. Even a 20-minute walk or bodyweight workout can do wonders for stress and mental focus. Movement clears your head, boosts energy, and keeps you from getting stiff after hours at the books.

By Darren Hourigan from Sustainable Fitness

4. Choose Smart Snacks
What you eat massively affects how you feel. Skip the sugar bombs they’ll spike your energy and leave you crashing mid-revision. Instead, go for snacks with protein, fats, and slow carbs: think boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, fruit with nuts, or rice cakes with peanut butter..
5. Don’t Rely on Caffeine to Survive
I get it sometimes that 3rd or 4th coffee feels necessary. But overdoing it will just make you wired, anxious, and ruin your sleep. Keep your caffeine to the morning or early afternoon, and pair it with a walk or break instead of using it to power through burnout.

6. Stay Connected
Studying can feel isolating, but mental health takes a hit when you shut everyone out. Even a quick chat, group study session, or walk with a mate can reset your head. I always say you ’ re not a machine. Stay human, and don’t be afraid to lean on your support network.
Whether you're studying for your Junior Cert, Leaving Cert, EASA modules, ATPL theory, or your first maintenance qualification looking after your body helps your brain show up properly. And when you're running on good energy, confidence comes easier.
Good luck with your exams and if you ever need support beyond the books, you know where to find me.
