Heritage in Schools
POST-PRIMARY PROGRAMME
From January 2027, Heritage in Schools will offer subsidised visits on our natural, built and cultural heritage to post-primary schools, serving the curriculum across Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle, including Transition Year. The Heritage Council will part-fund these visits, keeping them affordable for schools. Visits from our panel of specialists cover areas such as archaeology andmaterialculture, history and archives, language, literature and folklore, Irish traditional music, ecology, biodiversity, geology, heritage conservation, and traditional skills.
For more information and details of costs go to heritageinschools.ie Get our free classroom resource which guides TY students through a research and active citizenship project on their local monuments.

Heritage in Schools: Subsidised school visits from heritage specialists Beginning in January 2027, The Heritage Council will launch the Heritage in Schools PostPrimary programme. This is an expansion of our already successful Heritage in Schools scheme, which has been running at primary level for 25 years. How it works The Heritage in Schools Post-Primary programme will offer visits from a panel of heritage specialists to post-primary schools, including to Transition Year class groups. Visits aim to promote student learning by facilitating students’ exploration of aspects of their natural, built and cultural heritage, tangible and intangible. Our specialists’ expertise encompasses a variety of disciplines such as archaeology & material culture, local, national & international history, genealogy & family history, Irish language, traditional literature, folklore, Irish traditional music, heritage conservation (cultural, built & natural), ecology, biology, biodiversity, geology, and traditional crafts (e.g. willow-weaving, thatching etc.). Visits can take place in school grounds, but some specialists also offer visits to local heritage sites, buildings and habitats. Once the scheme launches, teachers will be able to browse our panel of specialists online, discuss availability and their needs with their preferred specialist via telephone, and book visits by completing a simple form via our online booking system. Visits are part-funded by The Heritage Council, keeping rates affordable. An extra subsidy also applies for DEIS schools. Why book a Heritage in Schools visit? Visits under the Heritage in Schools Post-Primary programme support the delivery of the curriculum, resulting in benefits for learners. For example, the new Transition Year Programme Statement (2024) outlines four student dimensions which underpin the development of TY programmes in schools. These are ‘personal growth’, ‘civic and community engagement’, ‘being a learner’, and ‘career exploration’. Engaging with heritage can help students develop across each of these dimensions. Learning about their own heritage for instance, can support ‘personal growth’ by promoting a sense of belonging in students via the intersection of place, community and identity. This can facilitate wellbeing, as can the acquisition by students of traditional heritage skills. Relatedly, by taking action to protect and promote their heritage, students can engage in active citizenship contributing to their community and wider society. By learning about their natural heritage and the cultural heritage of others in particular, students can learn multiperspectivity, empathy and develop a greater appreciation for social and environmental sustainability.
In relation to ‘being a learner’, exploring heritage can promote student engagement and make subjects more real and relatable. Moreover, using heritage as a source of data in school can promote evidence-informed perspectives and knowledge, and the development of higher-order thinking skills, literacy and numeracy. All of this will support students as they progress through Senior Cycle and beyond. Finally, by exploring different aspects of heritage, and through exposure to different heritage disciplines and their associated professional skills and contexts, learners can gain insight into career opportunities in the heritage sector. We want to support teachers and learners The Heritage Council have undertaken extensive research and consultations with teachers and students, and from this it has become clear that heritage has a myriad of connections to the post-primary curriculum. Likewise, we know there is an appetite among teachers and learners to explore their local heritage via the curriculum. The Heritage Council are committed to providing resources and opportunities to support teachers and students to do this. The Heritage in Schools Post-Primary programme is one such initiative. Additionally, we have recently developed a free, off-the-shelf resource which guides Transition Year students and their teachers through a research and active citizenship project based around their local archaeological heritage. This is our TY Adopt a Monument resource, which can be downloaded and used for classroom presentations, collaborative activities, and guiding and modelling the research process. It is available in both Irish and English via our website: www.heritagecouncil.ie/publications

Beyond the Cockpit: Discovering Careers in Aviation & Aircraft Leasing Think aviation is just about pilots and engineers? Think again. The aviation industry is one of the most diverse career sectors around, with opportunities spanning finance, law, procurement, technology, operations and much more. Hosted by PropelHer, the Future of Women in Aviation Webinar by Aviation Skillnet, will give students the chance to hear directly from four women working across different areas of aviation and aircraft leasing, each with a very different career journey.
Meet the Women Behind the Careers Opening the session is Sharon Forrester, Procurement Manager at CDB Aviation. Sharon’s career began as an engineer with the Irish Air Corps before taking her into the world of aircraft leasing and procurement. Her journey is a great example of how a career in aviation can evolve in unexpected directions and how the skills you develop along the way can open doors to completely new opportunities. Joining Sharon on the panel are Ali O’Sullivan, Niamh O’Meara and Clodagh Kearns, bringing perspectives from finance, law and procurement. Ali O’Sullivan, AVP Corporate Finance at SMBC Aviation Capital, works on the finance side of the global aircraft leasing industry. She is also part of the PropelHer team, supporting opportunities for women across aviation and aircraft leasing. Niamh O’Meara, Senior Legal Counsel at Milestone Aviation, brings a legal perspective to the sector. Working with a global helicopter leasing company, Niamh’s career sits at the intersection of law, aviation and helicopter leasing. Clodagh Kearns, AVP Procurement at SMBC Aviation Capital, has experience across aircraft and engine-related areas of aviation. She is also a member of the PropelHer team, supporting opportunities for women across the industry.
So, Where Could Aviation Take You? The panel will explore how each of the speakers found their way into aviation, the different skills they use in their roles and how the industry is changing. For students considering their future, it’s a chance to discover careers they may never have thought were part of the aviation world and to see that there isn't one single route into the industry. There will also be an opportunity to put questions directly to the panel and find out what it’s really like to build a career in aviation.

DAISY CHAIN Support children impacted by cancer throughout Ireland Cancer Fund forChildren provide emotional, social and therapeutic support to children and young people impacted by cancer, over the phone, on the hospital ward, in the family home and at our short break centre, Daisy Lodge. Every week across the island of Ireland, approximately 10 children and young people (aged 0-24) are diagnosed with cancer. By supporting our services, you can ensure these children and their families, don’t face this experience alone.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
WHAT WE DO Our aim is to empower, connect and strengthen families, so they feel equipped to deal with their cancer experience.
Individual Support
This is age specific and uses a variety of activities and discussion-based mediums to help children and young people explore their experience and process their feelings.
Groupwork
Our programmes allow children and young people with a similar cancer experience to build peer connections, gain support from others and develop skills to help them cope better with cancer.
Hospital Based Support
Our hospital based team provides children, young people and parents with tailored support during their time in hospital, giving them a space where they can share how they’re feeling.
Parental Support
We understand that when parents feel listened to, valued and empowered, they are better equipped to be there for their child. That is why we offer compassionate, informal support tailored to the family’s needs.
Bereavement Support The impact of a bereavement can be devasting. We stand with families in their grief, reducing feelings of isolation and providing gentle, therapeutic intervention.
Short Breaks
Short breaks at Daisy Lodge in Newcastle, Co. Down provide families with the opportunity to spend time together in a safe environment, where they can focus on reconnecting.
To accommodate growing demand, we are building a second Daisy Lodge in Cong, Co. Mayo. We are excited to say construction is now underway, with completion anticipated for Spring 2027.
Transition Year offers students a unique opportunity to develop new skills, build confidence, and make a positive impact in their community. If your students are interested in fundraising, our team are here to support them every step of the way. Whether they want to host a Daisy Day and wear yellow, organise a bake sale, or plan another creative fundraising event, we'll provide the guidance and resources they need to make it a success. Why not encourage students to turn their Transition Year Mini-Company into a fundraiser? It's a meaningful way to combine enterprise, creativity, and social responsibility while supporting an important cause. If your school would be interested in supporting Cancer Fund for Children this academic year, our Education and Youth Lead, Rebecca Oates, would be delighted to help and offer advice and resources. From Classroom to Career: Shaping the Future of Insurance A curriculum-aligned, classroom-ready Transition Year programme that builds awareness of financial literacy, sustainability and insurance careers — at no cost to schools. Transition Year gives schools the freedom to prioritise personal development, life skills, and career awareness - but sourcing structured, high-quality content that genuinely engages students can be challenging. The ‘Insurance Literacy’ Transition Year Programme from The Insurance Institute of Ireland has been designed specifically to meet that need: an online, classroom-ready programme that supports TY learning goals while minimising teachers’ preparation time. Importantly, the programme is completely free of charge, making it an accessible option for schools.
‘A classroom-ready TY module linking financial literacy, sustainability and career awareness in one structured programme.’ What is involved in this programme?
Insurance Literacy is a 3-module programme covering:
1. Financial literacy and sustainability In this module, students explore how financial decisions affect their daily lives, future independence, and wider communities. It supports: consumer awareness and financial planning discussions an examination of climate risk and the insurance industry’s response. Because this module’s content relates to everyday scenarios, students quickly see the relevance. Interactive scenarios, discussion prompts and reflection activities make this particularly useful for cross-curricular project work. 2. Insurance This module explores the world of insurance, its unique function, terminology and impact. Many students don’t realise how central insurance is to modern life. Homes, travel, sports events, businesses, technology, and even climate resilience all depend on it. By connecting insurance to students’ everyday experiences, this module turns what might seem like a complex topic into something relatable and surprisingly interesting. Curious students can access bonus content covering core insurance principles and products, and the role of the Central Bank in protecting consumers. This module’s content also supports the Junior and Leaving Certificate business subjects. 3. Career exploration A key objective during TY is to expand students’ awareness of future opportunities. This module introduces the various insurance careers - including broking, claims and underwriting - many of which students may not be familiar with and as a result may never previously have considered. It outlines the educational pathways into these careers including apprenticeships and professional qualifications - both of which represent the ‘earn and learn’ model. This module supports career guidance planning while helping students connect school learning with future possibilities.
Why should a school choose this programme? Schools should choose this programme because it is:
1. Built around TY curriculum priorities The content has been developed in accordance with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment’s template and guidelines. The programme supports the wider goals of TY by helping students: build confidence and independence in learning develop critical thinking and decision-making skills connect classroom topics to real-world issues strengthen their TY portfolio with a recognised Digital Badge. This programme integrates themes relevant to Business Studies, Geography, SPHE, Wellbeing, Economics, Politics and Society, and Career Guidance; making it easy to incorporate into existing TY planning and schemes of work. Teachers can deliver the modules in the classroom or allow students to move through the content independently. 2. Inclusive, relevant and student-centred Because TY groups include diverse learning needs and interests, inclusivity is essential. The programme assumes no prior knowledge of finance, sustainability or insurance, making it equally suitable for academic, practical and mixed-pathway schools. Students complete interactive activities, quizzes and reflective tasks, and earn a Digital Badge that strengthens their TY portfolio. Its emphasis on student voice - encouraging learners to reflect on their own decisions, values and future goals - supports TY’s broader maturity and confidence-building aims. For teachers seeking programmes that genuinely connect with student concerns about climate change, financial independence, and future careers, this programme’s relevance is one of its strongest features. 3. Designed for flexible delivery that reduces teacher workload The programme is intentionally designed for easy classroom implementation as it is: fully online modular and self-paced written in accessible language approximately 10 hours of teaching/learning time interactive and suitable for mixed-ability groups usable for individual, paired, or whole-class work. Teachers can use it as: a standalone TY module part of a careers programme or business studies or SPHE module a financial literacy or sustainability unit.
4. A signature TY experience Schools often look for one or two standout initiatives that define their TY offering each year. Because this programme combines life skills such as financial literacy and climate awareness with career learning, it has the potential to become one of those signature experiences. It delivers structured educational value while also developing students as future consumers and giving them knowledge they will genuinely use long after TY ends. And because it is free, it can be implemented without impacting departmental budgets or student contributions.
‘Designed for Transition Year, relevant for students, and completely free for schools.’
Paula Hodson (Deputy Chief Executive Officer), Robert Troy (Minister of State, Department of Finance), Siobhan Wynne (Development Manager) and Dermot Murray (Chief Executive Officer) at the launch of the Insurance Institute of Ireland’s Insurance Literacy Transition Year programme.
How do schools get involved?

The Climb and The Return:
A Formation Journey for Young People At Ciúnas Learning, we’re on a mission to support young people in developing habits, resilience, and wisdom that help them flourish now and in the future. After five years of delivering wellbeing education through our online programme Project One Sky, we’ve now launched a new book that goes deeper into the formation of character, habits, and reflective judgment: The Climb and The Return. The Climb and The Return tells the story of students embarking on a mountain journey — learning not just how to climb high, but how to return with perspective, steady habits, and meaningful reflection. The book blends narrative with practical tools and insights designed for Transition Year students and schools looking to support intentional growth in wellbeing, mindset, and personal development. What began as Project One Sky, an interactive wellbeing programme used by schools over the last five years, has grown into a richer formation resource. The Climb and The Return builds on this foundation, bringing together engaging storytelling with evidence-informed habit practices and reflective activities that help students explore: • Self-awareness and emotional navigation • Purpose and growth mindset • Daily habits that sustain wellbeing • Connection with others and community This book is purpose-built for young people in a world of rapid change. Rather than offering superficial tips, it helps learners explore why habits matter, how they shape who we become, and how resilience and discernment grow through practice.
Why TY Students Will Love It Transition Year is a unique time to pause, reflect, explore new ideas, and build habits that last beyond the classroom. The Climb and The Return offers both narrative engagement and practical reflection — giving students a meaningful companion for personal and group growth. We’re honoured to share this with the TY Hub community, and we hope it inspires TY students and educators across Ireland to engage deeply in their own journeys of formation.

MORE THAN HORSES Discover a world of care, careers, skills and opportunities Think horses are just about riding? Think again! From veterinary care and rehabilitation to nutrition, behaviour, racing, education and animal welfare, the equine world offers a huge range of opportunities for young people with a passion for animals. The Irish Horse Welfare Trust (IHWT) is helping to create a better future for horses and ponies in Ireland through rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming and education. Based at its Equine Centre in Woodenbridge, Co. Wicklow, IHWT cares for horses and ponies that have experienced neglect or cruelty, providing specialist care and rehabilitation before suitable horses are rehomed. We’re a small, committed team who take your aspirations seriously. Whether you're just starting out or looking to sharpen your edge, we treat your goals with the same level of care and professionalism we’d give to our own. Our approach is simple but powerful: we work with you. Together, we’ll refine your skills, shape your voiceover identity, and build a resilient, adaptable performer brand that can thrive in a competitive market. You’ll never be left stranded. We understand what it’s like to start from scratch. Founder Paul Butler Lennox has walked that road himself. With over 20 years of experience in film, TV, voiceover, and content creation, Paul’s career spans an impressive list of credits. From voice work for global names like Google Podcasts, Netflix, and Wondry, to narration and acting across RTÉ, BBC, and acclaimed audio drama studios, he’s done it all—including voicing seven characters in the hit Irish historical audio series The Invincibles: Park Assassins. He’s worked with clients like Studio Meala, The Irish Human Rights Equality Commission, Renault, St. Vincent de Paul, Deloitte, Beats Medical, and many more. Paul is not only a skilled voice artist and actor—he’s a director, producer, and educator. His work includes the viral documentary Cherished Unequally on Ireland’s housing crisis, and the celebrated documentary The Picturehouse, broadcast on RTÉ and internationally. He received a scholarship to study at John Boorman’s Irish Film School, and has been awarded funding from Screen Ireland, five regional county councils, and the Bank of Ireland Millennium Scholars Trust for excellence in the arts. As the founder of Film Network Ireland (FNI), Paul has led initiatives that support the Irish film and TV community, producing live events, seminars, and over 180 episodes of the industry podcast FNI Wrapchat. He’s taught acting and filmmaking across Ireland, Italy, and Switzerland, and continues to develop feature films and screen projects. Through PBL Voiceover, Paul channels this depth of experience into meaningful, tailored coaching—always grounded in realism, professionalism, and empathy. We don’t just teach technique. We help you build confidence, resilience, and a personal brand that’s ready to step into the spotlight. The results speak for themselves—and so do our clients. www.PBLVoiceover.com
