More Than a Dream: How TY Students Can Start Their Journey to the Flight Deck For many Transition Year students, the idea of becoming a pilot begins in the same way: a glance skyward, the sound of an aircraft overhead, or that moment on board a flight when the cockpit door opens and you catch a glimpse of the flight deck. It feels exciting, adventurous and just a little bit out of reach. The good news is that a career as a pilot is not out of reach at all. It is real, structured and achievable. But it does not happen by accident, and it is not built on dream alone. It is built step by step, through training, discipline, resilience and learning. That is why events such as AVCON are so valuable. They give young people the chance to see that aviation is not one single road open only to a lucky few. There are many routes into the industry, and one of the best things a TY student can do is start exploring them early. At AVCON, students can meet exhibitors, ask questions, speak to people already working in aviation and begin to understand what pathway may suit them best. For some, that pathway may be a cadetship with the Irish Air Corps. For others, it may be an airline-supported route such as the Aer Lingus Future Pilot Programme. Some students may decide that integrated training is the right fit, where training is completed in one full-time structured programme. Others may prefer the flexibility of modular training, progressing in stages while managing cost, work or college alongside it. The important message is this: there is no single “correct” route. There is a path for everyone, and AVCON is an excellent place to begin discovering which one could be yours. That said, while students often focus on the image of flying, they do not always realise how academic the journey is. Becoming a professional pilot is not only about handling an aircraft. It is about understanding weather, navigation, performance, air law, communications, flight planning, aircraft systems and human factors. In other words, before you can become a strong practical pilot, you must first become a serious aviation student. This is where many aspiring pilots misunderstand the journey. Too often, aviation theory is viewed as something to “get through” rather than something to properly understand. Students hear about ATPL theory and imagine a mountain of books, a long list of exams and endless facts to memorise. They begin to think of it as a box to tick on the way to the more exciting part. That is a mistake. The theory is not separate from flying. The theory is what makes sense of flying. When a pilot makes a decision in poor weather, manages an aircraft system issue, plans fuel, interprets performance data, understands an air traffic control clearance, or works effectively with another pilot in a busy commercial operation, they are relying on theoretical
knowledge. Good theory training does not just help somebody pass exams. It helps them think properly, make sound decisions and become safer, more employable and more capable in the long term. That is particularly important for young people who may one day sit an airline interview or assessment. Strong grades matter, of course, but marks alone are not the full story. If a student has simply memorised answers without really understanding the material, that usually becomes obvious when they are asked to explain concepts, apply knowledge, or discuss real operational scenarios. The most successful future pilots are not the ones who merely “got through” the theory. They are the ones who used it as the foundation for everything that followed. This is one of the reasons ASG places such importance on high-quality theoretical instruction. Founded in 2015, ASG is an Irish-based EASA Approved Training Organisation specialising in aviation theoretical training – from future airline pilots to flight operations staff. Our training approach is built around personalised support, strong instructional standards and a belief that theory should be taught in a way that stays with students long after the exam sitting is over. ASG focuses on smaller class sizes, student support throughout the training journey, and a learning environment designed to help students engage with the material properly rather than superficially. The training is supported by a learning centre containing extensive video content, tutorials and discussion support, with instruction delivered by subject matter specialists drawn from real operational backgrounds. That last point matters more than students may realise. Aviation theory becomes far more interesting, relevant, and memorable when it is taught by people who have lived it. When an instructor can explain not only what a principle means, but where it appears in real airline operations, in air traffic control, in engineering, or in professional flight training, the subject starts to come alive. It becomes less about memorising isolated facts and more about building a picture of how the aviation system works. Our instructors are operational Pilots. That blend of operational expertise helps students understand not just what is in the syllabus, but why it matters in the real world. For a TY student reading this, all of that may still feel a little way off. You may be years away from applying for professional training. That is perfectly fine. You do not need to have every answer yet. In fact, Transition Year is exactly the right time not to commit too early, but to explore intelligently. Go to events like AVCON. Speak to the Irish Air Corps. Ask about airline pathways. Talk to integrated schools and modular providers. Ask pilots how they trained. Ask what they wish they had known at your age. Ask what the job is really like on good days and difficult days. Most of all, start paying attention to the learning side of aviation, not just the image of it. Because the students who do best in this industry are rarely the ones who only loved the glamour of flying. They are the ones who became curious. They wanted to know how aircraft
work, how weather affects decision-making, why procedures matter, how pilots and controllers communicate, and what professionalism really looks like. They learned early that aviation rewards people who take preparation seriously. That is why theory deserves respect. It is not the boring bit before the real training begins. It is the beginning of becoming the kind of pilot an airline, an air corps, or any professional aviation organisation would want on its team. So if you are a TY student standing at the start of this journey, enjoy the excitement of it. Let AVCON open your eyes to the many possibilities in front of you. Be ambitious. Be inspired. But also be prepared to study, to ask questions and to build strong foundations. The sky may be the destination, but theory is one of the things that helps get you there. About the author Diarmuid O’Riordan is the founder of ASG. He previously served as Squadron Commander of Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Bal Donnel before retiring from the Military. He is now an operational airline Captain & instructor on Airbus A330 and A320 aircraft and also holds a Swiss ATC licence with instructor & examiner privileges.
Full biography of Diarmuid O’Riordan - founder of ASG Diarmuid began his aviation career in the Irish Air Corps, where he qualified as an Aerodrome, Approach, and Air Intercept Controller. He later became an instructor and examiner across all ATC endorsements in the military. During his service with the Defence Forces (DF), Diarmuid completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA), graduating with first-class honours in all 18 course modules. He was awarded both the gold medal for top graduate and a special University President’s Award for academic excellence. He subsequently served as Officer Commanding of the Air Corps' Air Traffic Control Squadron—a position he held for almost five years before retiring from the Defence Forces. Shifting his focus to his flying career, he joined Aer Lingus as a pilot. After several years in an operational flying role, he progressed into the airline’s training department, serving as a Type Rating Instructor (TRI) and Crew Resource Management Instructor (CRMI) on the Airbus A320. He operated both medium and long-haul routes before transitioning to the Airbus A330 for long-haul operations. During a five-year career break from Aer Lingus, Diarmuid returned to ATC in Switzerland, becoming an ATC instructor and examiner before being appointed Head of Training Delivery and Chief Instructor at Skyguide—Switzerland’s Air Navigation Services Provider. Skyguide provides both civil and military air traffic control and air navigation services across Switzerland and adjacent parts of neighbouring countries. With over 1,500 employees at 14 locations, the organisation manages approximately 1.2 million civil and military flights each year through some of Europe’s most complex airspace. While working at Skyguide, Diarmuid continued to fly and remained an active Airbus A330 Captain and instructor on both the A320 and A330. Initially flying global A330 cargo operations during the
COVID-19 pandemic, he later transitioned to passenger services for a wide range of airlines and charter partners, including Surinam Airways, Air Senegal, SpiceJet, Windrose, Saudia, Tunisair, TUI, Chapman Freeborn, DHL, and Amazon. This phase of his flying career brought him to destinations he had never imagined: from taking off in 45°C heat in Saigon, Medinah, Jeddah, and Hanoi, to landing in -45°C conditions in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska. He spent months flying routes across Korea and weeks enduring deep winter in Alaska in both Fairbanks and Anchorage. Fuel stops included Turkmenistan, with cargo operations extending to places like Tijuana. Notable flights included transporting Kanye West’s Choir group from Los Angeles to Paris, carrying special cargo from Cambodia to Washington Dulles via Tbilisi, and operating troop transport flights to Africa for the British Army. He flew cargo missions from Ukraine, operating routes connecting Hong Kong, New York JFK, and Kyiv. His flying logbook includes operations from nine different airports in China, four in India, and three in Saudi Arabia, as well as missions to Mexico, Alaska, Korea, Georgia, Romania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Vietnam, Kenya, Suriname, the USA, and Canada. Operating in unpredictable and often austere environments in both A330 and A320—with manual loadsheets and variable schedules— each day presented new challenges and deeply rewarding flying experiences. Diarmuid is also the founder of ASG, an EASA-approved training organisation. Since its establishment in 2015, ASG has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality training and consultancy services. In addition to training hundreds of airline pilots, ASG provides a broad range of specialised aviation training and bespoke consultancy solutions to clients including Aer Lingus, Norwegian Air, SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), the Irish Coast Guard (IRCG), Aramark, the Irish Air Corps, Hospital Helipads, ASL Airlines, Aluminium Offshore, Hibernian Airlines, SkyMates Flight Academy, Global Flight Training Solutions (GFTS), DAS Private Jets, An Garda Síochána (Irish Police), Ernst & Young, Catraeus Aircraft, and CityJet, among many others.
Turbulence ahead? Good. That's where the opportunities are. By Dr. Jarlath Molloy
Working on environment issues in aviation is one of the most challenging and interesting career areas in the sector today. What makes it a little unusual is that there is no single career path. You might start in engineering, operations, finance, communications or environmentteams and find yourself working on greenhouse gas emissions reporting, noise measurement, sustainable aviation fuels, infrastructure development, strategy, regulatory compliance, training, internal communications, or green procurement. The opportunities are diverse and constantly evolving.
For students, developing transferable skills is just as important as building technical knowledge. Being comfortable with change, the ability to communicate clearly and work across different teams can be just as important as understanding the science behind climate change. Knowing your own place and having a plan are also important; you’ll need to juggle long term regulatory targets and short term business priorities, as well as your own career goals.Aviation is a global sector and environmental issues rarely stop at national borders. The skills you build as your begin your career can open doors across airlines, airports, ANSPs, regulators, manufacturers, lessors, academia and NGOs. The sector is constantly evolving so you’ll need to adapt and never stop learning.
Most importantly, don't be afraid to challenge yourself. Environmental risks are shaping the future of aviation and those willing to embrace change, solve complex problems and explore new opportunities today will help lead the sector tomorrow.

Born Without Wings Muireann Bagley shares her journey from first flight to first licence “If you were born without wings, do nothing to prevent them growing” I very much doubt Coco Chanel was referring to young people interested in flying airplanes when she said this, but nevertheless, this seems like a good place to start my story. Aviation is a fascinating industry that caught my attention from a very young age and fortunately there was never anyone around me who told me it couldn’t be done. The first sprouting of my wings started with an extra special present on my 11th birthday. Having graduated from Lego, model airplanes and Meccano sets, I now set my sights on the real thing. With some clever negotiation, whereby my parents would be relieved of the chore of organising a birthday party, I would instead take to the air with my Instructor Laura Russell in Waterford Aero Club. But that was the end of that… an eleven-year-old doesn’t have much earning capacity and I was grounded. But a passion was ignited. And so, I saved whatever money I could get my hands on, read any books relating to aviation I could find, watched endless videos and frequently had to be dragged off Microsoft flight sim. I was fortunate to win a week’s scholarship sponsored by Delta at the National Flight Academy at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola where the Blue Angels are based. This kept the passion burning and created a whole new interest in the military side.
By TY I had a plan. In addition to arranging all work experience in aviation related areas (Big shout out to the Air Corps, AirNav and SimTech), I also set myself the challenge of completing my PPL. With a stroke of absolute luck, Navan Airfield took me under their wing and even more amazingly I was allocated an outstanding Instructor, Capt. Blaithin Wilson to guide me into the air. With Blaithin, my wings began to stretch and grow as she pushed and empowered me to embrace challenges and to be the best pilot I could be. With a focus on professional pilot competencies and threat and error management, she has helped lay the foundations for a potential future flying career. I enjoyed the entire process of becoming a private pilot and even looked forward to studying for the ground school exams. With the help of Brian, Stephen & Karl at ASG I was delighted to get through with first time passes on all subjects. Even the computers failing in the exam centre couldn’t stop me. The big hurdle of course when flying in Ireland is always the weather. My final handling test was scheduled for my birthday (the earliest date I could actually take the test). Looking for nice weather in Ireland in February was always going to be a bit of an ask. The joy of seeing bright blue skies that morning helped offset the nerves of sitting the test, but I was aware of the challenge ahead. Thorough and tough, no stone was left unturned as my examiner put me through stalls, simulated engine failures, glide approaches, navigation and diversion exercises. There was a huge sense of relief when he finally shook my hand and told me that I had passed. One flight test under my belt, but I hope to be sitting many more, next time as a professional pilot. Being one of the youngest pilots to pass the test, my 15 mins of fame quickly followed with invites for radio and press interviews. It was however particularly special to be invited by Fiona in AvCon to speak at the 2025 event. Having been in the audience as a student the year before, I was now elevated to the stage! With my Loreto Balbriggan classmates and teachers in the audience and joined on the stage by amazing role models F/O Susan Farrell and Airwoman Katie Bergin, it was an experience that I will never forget. For many, the AvCon event maybe just be the start of exploring new horizons and feeling those wings beginning to grow. Thanks to Fiona and the team for providing this amazing opportunity and for continuing to take it to greater heights each year.

Modular vs Integrated Training Choosing the Right Path with the Atlantic Flight Training Academy In the ever-evolving world of aviation, the journey from aspiring pilot to airline-ready professional is becoming more accessible through multiple training pathways. One of the most important decisions any future pilot will make is choosing between modular and integrated training. Each route offers distinct advantages, and understanding these differences is key to making the right choice. At the Atlantic Flight Training Academy (AFTA), students are supported in navigating both options, ensuring a tailored approach that aligns with individual goals, timelines, and resources.
Understanding Integrated Training Integrated training is often considered the “all-in-one” solution. Designed as a full-time, structured programme, it takes students from zero experience to a frozen ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence) in a continuous, streamlined process. Typically completed within 16–18 months, this pathway is ideal for those
fully committed to pursuing a professional aviation career from the outset and who want to complete their training as quickly as possible. At AFTA, integrated training is delivered with the highest standards of quality and pilot preparation. Students benefit from a carefully curated syllabus, experienced instructors, and access to advanced simulators and aircraft. Training is conducted on a large fleet that includes Cessna 172s, Diamond DA40s, Diamond DA42s, Slingsby T67 Fireflies, and Boeing 737 simulators. Another key advantage is efficiency. Because the training is continuous and structured, students often progress more quickly and with fewer interruptions. For those eager to enter the cockpit of a commercial airliner as soon as possible, AFTA’s integrated programme provides a direct and focused route.
The Flexibility of Modular Training In contrast, modular training offers flexibility and adaptability. Rather than committing to a full-time programme, students complete their training in stages. These stages include: PPL, Night Rating, ATPL theory, MEP CPL, MEIR, AUPRT, and finally APS MCC, along with continuous hour building. This approach allows individuals to train at their own pace, making it particularly appealing for those balancing work, education, or other commitments. AFTA recognises that not every aspiring pilot can commit to full-time training immediately. Its modular pathway is designed to provide the same high standards of instruction while allowing students to progress in a way that suits their lifestyle. Whether flying on weekends or studying theory alongside a job, modular students at AFTA receive the same professional guidance and access to top-tier facilities. Cost management is another significant advantage of modular training. It allows students to spread expenses over time, making it a more financially accessible option for many. While the total cost can be comparable to integrated training, the ability to pay in stages can make a crucial difference. Additionally, students can pause and resume training if needed, offering a level of control that integrated programmes typically cannot match.
Comparing the Two Paths So, which route is better? The answer depends entirely on the individual. Integrated training is best suited to those who are ready to fully commit to their aviation career from day one and have the finances readily available. It appeals to students who thrive in structured environments and want a clearly defined, accelerated pathway to the airlines. Modular training, on the other hand, is ideal for those who require flexibility in every aspect of their training. It suits individuals who may be working, studying, or transitioning careers, and who prefer to progress at their own pace while spreading costs over time. At AFTA, the emphasis is not on pushing students toward one path over the other, but on helping them make informed decisions. With experienced advisors and instructors, AFTA ensures that each student’s journey aligns with their personal circumstances and long-term career ambitions.
Why Choose AFTA? What sets AFTA apart is its commitment to excellence across both training models. With a large modern fleet, cutting-edge simulation technology, and a strong reputation within the aviation industry, AFTA has become a trusted name in pilot training. Students benefit from industry-experienced instructors who bring real-world insight into the classroom and cockpit. The academy fosters a supportive and professional learning environment, ensuring that students feel confident and prepared at every stage of their training. In addition, AFTA maintains strong links with the airline industry, offering valuable career guidance and helping graduates take the step from training to employment. Whether choosing modular or integrated training, AFTA ensures that graduates are not only qualified but truly prepared for the demands of a professional flying career.
Final Thoughts The choice between modular and integrated training is not about right or wrong, it’s about what works best for you. Both pathways can lead to the same destination: a rewarding career in aviation. The key is selecting a training course that works for you and that will let you bring out the best of yourself. With AFTA, students gain more than just qualifications, they gain a partner in their aviation career. No matter which path you choose, AFTA is ready to help you take off. Skills Programme & Badges We’ve designed a nine-stage skills programme with badges at every level, helping members progress from beginner to advanced radio skills.
Leader Training & Support RSI offers one-day training courses for Scout and Guide leaders, giving them confidence to guide young members. We also connect groups with local amateur radio clubs.
Equipment and Donations We act as a hub for donated amateur radio gear, ensuring groups can access the equipment they need to run radio and STEM activities.
JOTA-JOTI & International Events Every year, Scouts worldwide join Jamboree On The Air / Jamboree On The Internet (JOTA-JOTI) to connect across the globe. RSI supports Irish groups to take part. From Classroom to Career: Shaping the Future of Insurance A curriculum-aligned, classroom-ready Transition Year programme that builds awareness of financial literacy, sustainability and insurance careers — at no cost to schools. Transition Year gives schools the freedom to prioritise personal development, life skills, and career awareness - but sourcing structured, high-quality content that genuinely engages students can be challenging. The ‘Insurance Literacy’ Transition Year Programme from The Insurance Institute of Ireland has been designed specifically to meet that need: an online, classroom-ready programme that supports TY learning goals while minimising teachers’ preparation time. Importantly, the programme is completely free of charge, making it an accessible option for schools.
‘A classroom-ready TY module linking financial literacy, sustainability and career awareness in one structured programme.’ What is involved in this programme?
Insurance Literacy is a 3-module programme covering:
1. Financial literacy and sustainability In this module, students explore how financial decisions affect their daily lives, future independence, and wider communities. It supports: consumer awareness and financial planning discussions an examination of climate risk and the insurance industry’s response. Because this module’s content relates to everyday scenarios, students quickly see the relevance. Interactive scenarios, discussion prompts and reflection activities make this particularly useful for cross-curricular project work. 2. Insurance This module explores the world of insurance, its unique function, terminology and impact. Many students don’t realise how central insurance is to modern life. Homes, travel, sports events, businesses, technology, and even climate resilience all depend on it. By connecting insurance to students’ everyday experiences, this module turns what might seem like a complex topic into something relatable and surprisingly interesting. Curious students can access bonus content covering core insurance principles and products, and the role of the Central Bank in protecting consumers. This module’s content also supports the Junior and Leaving Certificate business subjects. 3. Career exploration A key objective during TY is to expand students’ awareness of future opportunities. This module introduces the various insurance careers - including broking, claims and underwriting - many of which students may not be familiar with and as a result may never previously have considered. It outlines the educational pathways into these careers including apprenticeships and professional qualifications - both of which represent the ‘earn and learn’ model. This module supports career guidance planning while helping students connect school learning with future possibilities.
Why should a school choose this programme? Schools should choose this programme because it is:
1. Built around TY curriculum priorities The content has been developed in accordance with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment’s template and guidelines. The programme supports the wider goals of TY by helping students: build confidence and independence in learning develop critical thinking and decision-making skills connect classroom topics to real-world issues strengthen their TY portfolio with a recognised Digital Badge. This programme integrates themes relevant to Business Studies, Geography, SPHE, Wellbeing, Economics, Politics and Society, and Career Guidance; making it easy to incorporate into existing TY planning and schemes of work. Teachers can deliver the modules in the classroom or allow students to move through the content independently. 2. Inclusive, relevant and student-centred Because TY groups include diverse learning needs and interests, inclusivity is essential. The programme assumes no prior knowledge of finance, sustainability or insurance, making it equally suitable for academic, practical and mixed-pathway schools. Students complete interactive activities, quizzes and reflective tasks, and earn a Digital Badge that strengthens their TY portfolio. Its emphasis on student voice - encouraging learners to reflect on their own decisions, values and future goals - supports TY’s broader maturity and confidence-building aims. For teachers seeking programmes that genuinely connect with student concerns about climate change, financial independence, and future careers, this programme’s relevance is one of its strongest features. 3. Designed for flexible delivery that reduces teacher workload The programme is intentionally designed for easy classroom implementation as it is: fully online modular and self-paced written in accessible language approximately 10 hours of teaching/learning time interactive and suitable for mixed-ability groups usable for individual, paired, or whole-class work. Teachers can use it as: a standalone TY module part of a careers programme or business studies or SPHE module a financial literacy or sustainability unit.
4. A signature TY experience Schools often look for one or two standout initiatives that define their TY offering each year. Because this programme combines life skills such as financial literacy and climate awareness with career learning, it has the potential to become one of those signature experiences. It delivers structured educational value while also developing students as future consumers and giving them knowledge they will genuinely use long after TY ends. And because it is free, it can be implemented without impacting departmental budgets or student contributions.
‘Designed for Transition Year, relevant for students, and completely free for schools.’
