This Christmas edition of Altitude is especially meaningful, our first-ever limited printed issue and a celebration of two incredible years of AvCon. What began as a bold idea has grown into a national movement for aviation, aerospace, and future talent in Ireland. In 2025, we reached a remarkable milestone: over 8,000 students walked through the gates of AvCon, proudly hosted by the Irish Air Corps, with thousands more joining us online from across Ireland and internationally. Their energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm continue to inspire everything we do. This year also marked the launch of the AvCon TYHub SkyBound Fund, an initiative designed to break down financial barriers and support schools in accessing aviation learning experiences. From pilot talks to the Dare to Dream Flight Challenge, students and teachers embraced the programme with passion, reinforcing our belief that when opportunity meets ambition, amazing things happen. The SkyBound Fund will continue to grow in 2026, empowering even more young people to reach new heights. As we look forward to the new year, our mission remains clear: more collaboration, more innovation, and more opportunities for students to discover their path in aviation and aerospace. Together with our partners, exhibitors, speakers, teachers, and the wider community, we can achieve even greater things. Thank you for being part of the AvCon journey. Here’s to a bright, ambitious, sky-high 2026. Go raibh míle maith agaibh, Le meas,

AVCON STRENGTHENS IRELAND’S AVIATION PIPELINE WITH ANOTHER LANDMARK EVENT

AvCon returned this year to the historic heart of Irish Military Aviation — Ireland’s oldest operational hangar at Casement Aerodrome — marking its second consecutive year of extraordinary growth, energy, and impact. More than 8,000 students attended in person, with a further 8,000+ students joining online from Ireland and across the world. From Transition Year right through to university level, students immersed themselves in a day that blended education, inspiration, and the thrill of realworld aviation. A Showcase of Innovation, Opportunity & Irish Aviation Pride Students and educators were overwhelmingly positive, many describing the event as “eyeopening” and “career-changing.” This year’s expanded lineup featured:

The Sky Is NOT The Limit, It’s ONLY The Beginning! A dynamic roster of speakers from across Europe, representing aviation, aerospace, engineering, defence, and emerging technologies. An impressive exhibitor platform showcasing airlines, MROs, training organisations, aerospace companies, and education providers. Aircraft displays that captivated attendees — including the chance sightings of the Irish Air Corps PC-12 and C295 taking off during the event, creating unforgettable moments for many of the students. The collaboration with the Irish Air Corps continues to reinforce Ireland’s proud legacy in military aviation and highlights the country’s commitment to developing the next generation of aviators, engineers, innovators, and industry leaders.

Photos by: Shannon Irvine Inspiring Europe’s Future Workforce AvCon’s hybrid model once again proved its value. With students tuning in from Europe, the UK, and beyond, the event has solidified its status as Ireland’s largest aviation and aerospace careers experience — and one of the most forward-thinking in Europe. Teachers praised the event for its relevance and accessibility, while students engaged enthusiastically with exhibitors, career talks, simulators, and demonstrations. The international interest further showcased Ireland’s reputation as a global hub for aviation and aerospace excellence.

Shaping Tomorrow’s Talent — Today From its military roots to its thriving commercial and aerospace sectors, Ireland continues to punch above its weight: The world’s largest aircraft leasing cluster Advanced aerospace manufacturers supporting Airbus, Boeing and global partners Aer Lingus’ internationally recognised flight training and operations A Defence Forces aviation heritage that continues to evolve AvCon’s mission to bridge the skills gap and energise young talent is now firmly established, and this year’s success proves the appetite is stronger than ever.

From Legacy to Liftoff: Ireland’s Role in the Aviation and Aerospace Sector Ireland’s aviation roots run deep. We’re home to: • The world’s largest aircraft leasing cluster, managing over 60% of the global leased fleet. • Aerospace manufacturing firms supplying parts and innovation to Airbus, Boeing, and beyond. • A national carrier in Aer Lingus, globally recognised for pilot training and safety excellence. • A proud military aviation tradition through the Irish Air Corps, with some of the most advanced air operations in Europe.

So what are we doing about it? At AvCon 2026, we’re not just talking about the problem — we’re building solutions:

But this legacy won’t sustain itself. The aerospace sector is forecast to grow by 8.1% annually, while Ireland faces a critical shortage of qualified engineers, technicians, pilots, and data specialists in aviation.

The Talent Crisis is Now — AvCon is the Response The skills shortage isn’t a distant threat — it’s already impacting productivity, innovation, and growth. According to Enterprise Ireland, over 20,000 new skilled aviation workers will be needed across maintenance, engineering, operations, and R&D in the next decade.

Live Career Talks streamed globally, including first-person insights from pilots, aerospace engineers, ATC, MRO leaders, UAV experts, and defence personnel. Interactive exhibitions where students build drones, simulate aircraft systems, explore AI in aviation, and meet the companies shaping the skies. B2B and Afterburner Networking Events that connect educators, startups, and industry giants to collaborate in real-time.

Who Do We Need Now? The Industry. We don’t need more panel discussions about the skills crisis. We need action. We’re calling on airlines, MROs, aerospace manufacturers, air navigation providers, defence forces, drone companies, space tech innovators, and aviationadjacent sectors to show up. Exhibit. Speak. Mentor. Advertise. Fund student transport. Sponsor school places. Hire interns. Create competitions. Film videos. Be visible. Because students can’t dream of careers they’ve never heard of. Your presence at AvCon 2026 isn’t about ticking a CSR box — it’s about safeguarding Ireland’s position in a global industry worth €5 trillion by 2035.

Photos by: Shannon Irvine Be Where the Future Takes Off AvCon is where talent meets opportunity — and where the future of Ireland’s aviation and aerospace workforce begins. Corporate registrations, speaker opportunities, and exhibitor slots are open now. Join us at AvCon 2026 — because if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the silence. Please note: AvCon 2025 is not open to the public — attendance is by registration or invitation only, ensuring a focused and impactful environment for students, educators, and industry professionals.

Born Without Wings Muireann Bagley shares her journey from first flight to first licence “If you were born without wings, do nothing to prevent them growing” I very much doubt Coco Chanel was referring to young people interested in flying airplanes when she said this, but nevertheless, this seems like a good place to start my story. Aviation is a fascinating industry that caught my attention from a very young age and fortunately there was never anyone around me who told me it couldn’t be done. The first sprouting of my wings started with an extra special present on my 11th birthday. Having graduated from Lego, model airplanes and Meccano sets, I now set my sights on the real thing. With some clever negotiation, whereby my parents would be relieved of the chore of organising a birthday party, I would instead take to the air with my Instructor Laura Russell in Waterford Aero Club. But that was the end of that… an eleven-year-old doesn’t have much earning capacity and I was grounded. But a passion was ignited. And so, I saved whatever money I could get my hands on, read any books relating to aviation I could find, watched endless videos and frequently had to be dragged off Microsoft flight sim. I was fortunate to win a week’s scholarship sponsored by Delta at the National Flight Academy at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola where the Blue Angels are based. This kept the passion burning and created a whole new interest in the military side.

By TY I had a plan. In addition to arranging all work experience in aviation related areas (Big shout out to the Air Corps, AirNav and SimTech), I also set myself the challenge of completing my PPL. With a stroke of absolute luck, Navan Airfield took me under their wing and even more amazingly I was allocated an outstanding Instructor, Capt. Blaithin Wilson to guide me into the air. With Blaithin, my wings began to stretch and grow as she pushed and empowered me to embrace challenges and to be the best pilot I could be. With a focus on professional pilot competencies and threat and error management, she has helped lay the foundations for a potential future flying career. I enjoyed the entire process of becoming a private pilot and even looked forward to studying for the ground school exams. With the help of Brian, Stephen & Karl at ASG I was delighted to get through with first time passes on all subjects. Even the computers failing in the exam centre couldn’t stop me. The big hurdle of course when flying in Ireland is always the weather. My final handling test was scheduled for my birthday (the earliest date I could actually take the test). Looking for nice weather in Ireland in February was always going to be a bit of an ask. The joy of seeing bright blue skies that morning helped offset the nerves of sitting the test, but I was aware of the challenge ahead. Thorough and tough, no stone was left unturned as my examiner put me through stalls, simulated engine failures, glide approaches, navigation and diversion exercises. There was a huge sense of relief when he finally shook my hand and told me that I had passed. One flight test under my belt, but I hope to be sitting many more, next time as a professional pilot. Being one of the youngest pilots to pass the test, my 15 mins of fame quickly followed with invites for radio and press interviews. It was however particularly special to be invited by Fiona in AvCon to speak at the 2025 event. Having been in the audience as a student the year before, I was now elevated to the stage! With my Loreto Balbriggan classmates and teachers in the audience and joined on the stage by amazing role models F/O Susan Farrell and Airwoman Katie Bergin, it was an experience that I will never forget. For many, the AvCon event maybe just be the start of exploring new horizons and feeling those wings beginning to grow. Thanks to Fiona and the team for providing this amazing opportunity and for continuing to take it to greater heights each year.

Critical Skills for Critical Times: Aviation Managerial Requirements of the Upcoming AI Era By Capt. Fahad ibne Masood, MRAeS, Squadron Leader (R) The prospects of the automated aviation industry give us a vision of walking into an AI cockpit, where the computer’s do the mundane tasks, and quantum computing does the significant changes for the process. With the industry expected to be valued at 1 trillion by 2030, the new workforce entrants will not just be joining a industry, but they will be equipped with leading the industry. Extraordinary opportunities are and will be available to aspiring managers as the aviation industry transforms with the integration of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and advanced air mobility. The development of the necessary skill sets to master the blending of soft and hard skills to develop the necessary competencies to access the highest careers within the field is what this write-up is all about.

Eadvancement of travel, transport of cargo and novel urban mobility. This, of course, is driven by the post pandemic world, the new technological instructions, and redefined frameworks. The latest emphasis on ‘sustainability’ related to systems will drive the development of latest tools to combat climate change. This is a crucial conceptual framework for manager newcomers of fields such as Flight operations, Air traffic control

Evolving Landscape of Aviation Careers By the year 2040, an estimated 2.1 million people will be required to keep up with the rapid growth of the sector including the

and Airport management respectively. The industry is being drained of it's qualified personnel due to retirees, and is under ‘clouds’ of digital skill incapacities across the board. This gap leaves ambitious newcomers with a world of possiblities.

Harnessing AI for Operational Excellence The field of aviation is being transformed by Artificial Intelligence, moving the industry towards the automation of various processes. The estimated fuel savings of real time route optimisation and predictive maintenance is in the millions and the reduction of downtime is as high as 30 percent.

New managers will need to develop some strategic insight to sift through scope for quantum in hybrid classical-quantum workflows, particularly around sensitive data which may be unprotected due to quantum computing. In this case, staying at the cutting edge of an emerging sector, led by early adopters, will require an ongoing pursuit of education in the form of beginner certifications relevant to quantum.

AI literacy, and the ability to crunch data, is essential for new managers to drive automation in the field. Cybersecurity, to keep the systems secure, is also vital. Yet, examples of ethical decision-making, such as determining whether an algorithm is ‘biased’, as well as crisis situations involving empathic and rapid responses, showcase the unreplaceable nature of human reasoning in these multidimensional and unpredictable situations. Leaders of tomorrow, you, will need to establish an environment in which the human component in safety-sensitive positions is complemented (some will say replaced) by technology.

Advanced Air Mobility: Opening New Skies The Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector is set to revolutionize urban mobility with the integration of new eVTOL aircraft into urban transit networks. With the innovation, users will enjoy the benefits of on-demand air travel and integrated transport at their convenience while creating numerous job opportunities. Future managers in the sector will have to get creative as there is limited airspace to manage and gain public trust. They, therefore, need knowledge in regulatory compliance, sustainability practices, and joint planning. Strong situational awareness – SA – and engagement with stakeholders will be crucial

GEN Days 2025: Europe’s Next Aviation Leaders Take Flight 26–28 November 2025 — EASA Headquarters, Cologne Aviation is entering a new era; digital, sustainable, and globally connected. To prepare future leaders for this transformation, EASA hosted GEN Days 2025, a three-day programme in collaboration with EUROAVIA and the T-C Alliance. With more than 60 students from across Europe, and AvCon proudly taking part as guest speakers, the event brought the next generation face-to-face with the reality, challenges, and excitement of modern aviation.

Connecting Students with the Real Aviation Landscape Europe is facing significant workforce shortages across aviation. GEN Days plays a crucial role in addressing this by promoting awareness of the full spectrum of careers in engineering, cybersecurity, operations, emerging technologies, environmental protection, and regulatory leadership. Created as part of the European Plan for Aviation Safety (EPAS) task SPT.0107, the initiative aims to inspire students early and spark interest in careers that will shape the future of aviation.

“The young generation of today, will be building the future of aviation industry of tomorrow.” - Stephen Van Houwelingen - Dad, Pilot & Owner of Stac Aviation Consultancy

EUROAVIA: The Student Voice of European Aviation EUROAVIA, founded in 1959, connects aerospace students through events, workshops, competitions, and industry partnerships. Their involvement ensures that GEN Days speaks directly to the questions and concerns of today’s young professionals.

Learning Through Experience GEN Days blended presentations, interactive challenges, debates, and behind-the-scenes professional insights. Students explored topics they selected themselves, along with special sessions proposed by EASA experts.

Topics Included: Urban Air Mobility & UAS Cybersecurity Sustainability & environmental innovation AI & aviation safety Data4Safety & Big Data Training futures & simulation tech Air operations & rotorcraft missions Speakers, including those from AvCon, emphasised the human side of aviation: unexpected career paths, the importance of communication, and how curiosity and adaptability will define the aviation workforce of the future. “I began in safety and one day found myself in eVTOLs - a field I didn’t even know existed as a student. Stay curious; the future will open doors you can’t yet see.” - Emilia Apostu, Safety Consultant

Diversity Takes Centre Stage Female participation exceeded 25%, surpassing the global average for women in aviation. Speakers represented a wide range of backgrounds and specialisations, demonstrating that the future of aviation must and will be inclusive.

Understanding the Role of EASA Students were given a fresh perspective on the regulatory world. Far from being “industry police,” EASA plays a pivotal role in enabling innovation by ensuring every new aircraft, technology, and system meets Europe’s highest safety standards. GEN Days helped students see regulation not as a barrier, but as a gateway to a safer, more advanced industry. “Organising and attending GEN Days with the T-C-Alliance was an inspiring first-time experience that demonstrated to EASA the immense value of connecting directly with the students who will tackle the challenges we see in aviation today. It brings up the importance of engaging with motivated young women and men early and sharing real insights and experiences from our own journeys in aviation.” - Antonio Gonzalez-Gomez, Safety Promotion Business Partner / Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador at EASA

A Lasting Impact The enthusiasm and curiosity of the students energised everyone involved. GEN Days proved that when industry meets young people where they are openly, creatively, and honestly the results can spark long-term interest and career ambition.

Final Takeaway: The Future Is Calling Aviation must work harder than ever to compete with other high-tech sectors for talent. GEN Days 2025 showed the power of engaging with students early, authentically, and meaningfully. Through EPAS SPT.0107, EASA will continue supporting organisations and partners seeking to inspire the next generation. The future of aviation is bright, and it’s already walking through our doors.

Building the Future of Aviation with Drones By Avtrain – Europe’s Leading Drone Training & Certification Provider

The aviation landscape is evolving at an unprecedented speed. Drones - once thought of as hobbyist tools are now revolutionising industries ranging from emergency response and infrastructure inspection to logistics and environmental monitoring. As we enter this new era, the roles of trust, safety, and training have never been more critical.

"We live by the 3D’s - If it is Dull, Dirty or Dangerous then a drone should be doing it.” At Avtrain, Our mission is simple: to empower organisations and individuals to fly drones with confidence. Based in Ireland and operating across Europe, we provide EASA-recognised drone pilot training, certification, and regulatory consultancy. Whether we are training an aerial photographer to take great photos from above, the Irish Coast Guard to use drones in search and rescue operations, or helping infrastructure companies integrate aerial operations into their workflows, we ensure one standard remains constant: compliance and safety at the highest level.

Why Drones Matter to Ireland’s Aviation Community For aviation professionals, drones represent not just a new tool, but a new dimension of the airspace. They extend the capabilities of traditional aviation and open opportunities for data-driven, sustainable, and costeffective operations. From offshore windfarms to emergency medical support, drones are transforming how work gets done. Ireland, with its innovative aviation ecosystem, is uniquely positioned to lead in this space. By embracing drone integration, we enhance our global competitiveness while creating safer and more efficient skies.

Avtrain’s Commitment to Excellence Skilled remote pilots and compliant operations are at the heart of successful drone adoption. That’s why Avtrain offers: Full suite of drone pilot training, from basic open-category competencies to advanced, beyond visual line of sight operations (BVLOS). Regulatory expertise, helping companies navigate the complexities of Europe’s EASA drone regulations. Enterprise solutions, tailoring training and compliance programmes for industries including emergency response, transport, utilities, and more. Our vision is to make Ireland and Europe the safest and most advanced operating environment for drones in the world - and that requires collaboration across the entire aviation sector.

Looking Ahead The convergence of crewed aviation with uncrewed aircraft presents both challenges and opportunities. It is an opportunity for us as an industry to establish standards, create pathways, and promote innovation - ensuring that drones are integrated into the skies responsibly and efficiently. At Avtrain, we are proud to sit at this frontier, equipping pilots and organisations to soar into the future with confidence. At National College of Ireland, we are delighted to announce that in 2025/2026, TY and International students can once again enjoy the opportunity to participate in our award-winning Young Future Leaders Programme. What is the Young Future Leaders Programme? The Young Future Leaders Programme is a unique opportunity for TY students across Ireland and high school students globally to experience college-level learning, develop essential skills for their future, and connect with peers from around the world, all from the comfort of their home or their school. About this year’s programme: In 2024, the programme was run during the month of November. It was a remarkably busy month, comprised of engaging and informative sessions that allowed participants to cover a range of key topics in a short period of time while interacting with other students from various parts of the globe. Last year, Transition Year students were able to take part for the first time. Not only did these students enthusiastically get involved, but the feedback we have received, and the interest in this year’s programme, has been extremely rewarding. In 2025/2026, the Young Future Leaders Programme is expanding once again. This time, the programme is going to run from October 2025 to May 2026, allowing students to have an even richer experience that will see them through their Transition Year, giving them more time to connect with their peers, and cover a broader range of topics. Before Christmas, students will take part in sessions covering career advice, work experience preparation, project management, and public speaking sessions. There will be more sessions added on learning techniques, mental health, safe interest use, and more as we move into 2026. “The lessons have been highly informative, and I have learned a lot from them. This programme has been a great help in teaching me practical skills that I can use in my future workplace." ~ Young Future Leaders Programme Graduate, 2024.

"I enjoyed the programme immensely, especially the method of teaching as I learned new skills that can help me during my academic journey." ~ Young Future Leaders Programme Graduate, 2024. How students can take part: All sessions will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams and students will gain a certificate upon successful completion of the programme. All information about how you can register is available on our Young Future Leaders Programme landing page. At National College of Ireland, we believe in being encouraging and proactive. It is exciting to think that TY and International students may be inspired and discover what study/career path will suit them during their time with us as they take part in NCI’s Young Future Leaders Programme. We look forward to welcoming this year’s cohort. You can continue reading about the Young Future Leaders Programme here on NCI's news page.
