Page Design #3 Lettering during the Roman Empire and Middle Ages gothic minuscule Gothic Script A litle History

he gothic script, also known as Blackletter or Gothic minucule, was a type of script used across Western Europe from 1150 until the 17th century approximately. Gothic

script originated from the Carolingian minuscule, which was solely used for religious texts, when demand for new books rose and production needed to be quick. The Carolingian large size took too much space of the manuscripts and was really high labor so a new script that would allow for more words to fit on the manuscripts and for quicker production was needed to be able to meet the high demands.

For A3, we had to create a page design with a typeface from the Roman Empire or Middle Ages. My typeface was gothic miniscule and my theme was gothic art. I first drew my word, preciosity on paper to then trace it on Illustrator.

Page Design#4 Renaissance Typography and Printing For A4 page design, my theme was Baroque and the typeface I did was Garamond bold italic. The word I decided to do with this typeface was “tension.” I did some research on who Claude Garamond was, the typefaces he created and the distinctive features of his typefaces.

Page Design#5 Typography During Colonization and Industrialization

For A5 page design, the theme I chose was Age of Enlightenment and the typeface I did was Roman du Roi. First, I drew a grid on my paper as a guide for my letters and then drew my word with pencil. The word I chose to do was ‘Reason.’ I did some research on what was the Age of Enlightenment and the origins of the Roman du Roi typeface.

Page Design#6 Early TwentiethCentury Typography

For A6 page design, I chose to do the typeface Peignot and my theme was De Stilj. The word I decided to do was ‘primary’ because the De Stilj art movement only used primary colors, black and white. For the research, I wrote about the origins of the Peignot font, who designed and who commissioned it.

Page Design#7 The Swiss design Style / International Typographic Style

For A7, I chose the theme swiss design for my page design, I did the Helvetica typeface and my word was “Clarity”. First, I handrew my word on a piece of paper and made guides with a ruler so I could be more precise with my drawing. Then, I passed it to illustrator to trace the word. For the research, I mostly talked about about the history of the Helvetica typeface and who created it.

Page Design#8 Contemporary Typography and Digital Technology

For A8 page design, I decided to do the FF Rosetta typeface and my theme was bitmaps. The word I chose to do was ‘pixel’ because it matches with my theme of bitmaps. First, I did the hand drawn version of the typeface while looking at a reference with pencil and then trace it in Illustrator. For the research, I talked a bit about the history of the FF Rosetta typeface and what bitmaps are.

Page Design#9 Type face’s anatomical details, Width & Weight

For A9, the typeface I chose to do for my page design was Françoise Ambroise (Didot) and my theme/word was French. I first did the hand drawn version of paper with a ruler and label some anatomical terms. Then for the digital version, I mostly used the pen tool, curvature tool and shape tool to do the tracing. The research was mostly about the history of the Didot typeface and Françoise Ambroise.

For A11 we had to grab different song lyrics that we liked to create contrast with different Pity Party type of text boxes and fonts. For some of the text boxes I either grab a shape or glyph to create the outline of the box. I tried do various types of fonts and different placements for all the text boxes. For the illustration, I grabed different glyphs to create kind of like a picture of a knight.

A12 Page Design#12 Selecting and Combining Fonts Creatively

For the logo design assigment, I decided to redesing the logo of a small local cafe called “BoraSoo Cafe.” First, I sketch a few logo ideas on paper to then chose one to do in Illustrator. In Illustrator, I created my logo using the pen tool and curvature tool. The original logo of the cafe was a whale so I decided to just do a whale tail with a wave going over it. I did a few color variations of the logo with different fonts for each. For the slogan, I did “Refresh & Relax” because I felt it matched with the general vibe of the cafe and I placed it around the fin of the whale.

For the contemporary/modern page design, I chose to do a magazine spread about the Sanrio duo Kuromi and My Melody. The characters themselves are opposites of eachother so I wanted the desing of the spread to refflect that. To create the spread I used InDesign.

The Iconic Sanrio Duo

KUROMI

Kuromi is a character from the My

Melody universe. She is My Melody’s rival, and manifests as a white rabbit or imp-like creature wearing a black jester’s hat with a pink skull on the front and a black devil’s tail. The skull’s facial expression changes to match Kuromi’s mood. Fittingly, her birthday is Halloween (October 31st). Her name translates from Japanese to English as “black beauty”. She has become a popular character for the punk, scene, and goth crowds due to her appearance. Kuromi is the “punk” tomboy counterpart to My Melody. Although My Melody can get along with Kuromi, Kuromi’s feelings are more inclined to rivalry to look tough.

Kuromi is from the anime Onegai My Melody. Kuromi keeps a notebook which she dubs the “Kuromi Note” filled with over 6,324 instances of times My Melody has wronged her.
