President’s Message Thank you to the Lone Star GCSA for the opportunity to serve in 2019, and many thanks to outgoing President Jake Snyman. He’s been carrying the torch for the past two years, and we appreciate his service and dedication to Lone Star GCSA. I look forward to a productive and successful year for our chapter.

To all who that went out to the 2019 Golf Industry Show in San Diego, thank you for representing our great state. The GIS was as strong as ever with a vast amount of education and networking opportunities for everyone. On the golf course, Texas dominated the field. Congratulations Steve Gilley for winning the 2019 GCSAA National Championship. He fought tough conditions and had several other Lone Star competitors nipping at his heels. We are proud of the Lone Star Team who brought home the National Championship as the Gross Winner.

Congratulations also to Alan Hess, Gross Winner of the senior flight. Gentlemen, you represented LSGCSA well and brought home a check to Lone Star for your hard work. We had a wonderful time at the Lone Star reception at Bootleggers. What an amazing crowd at one of the best chapter receptions in the country! We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors. We are already looking forward to seeing everyone at next year’s reception at The Pub in Orlando on January 29, 2020.

As we get ready for spring, start making plans to attend our two main annual events. The Texas Cup is set for May 20 at The Golf Club at Texas A&M. We look forward to a wonderful event in Aggieland with host Jason Barrington. The Texas Trophy will be held on September 15-17 at Kingwood Country Club. We are looking forward to being able to mix it up by playing several different courses. Check the LSGCSA website for more details. We are grateful to Simplot and Helena, our title sponsors for these events.

If your facility has not had the chance to donate to Rounds 4 Research, there’s still time. Please contact any LSGCSA board member if you need assistance in the donation process. If you aren’t able to donate this year, please educate the members or customers at your facility on the opportunities to bid on amazing golf venues across the state and country. R4R auction begins April 29 and will run through May 5.

I know that all areas of the state have faced weather challenges during the past year. Many courses have been fighting drought, but for us in South Texas, we have experienced 20+ weeks of rain, making it one of the wettest falls on record. Wish we could share some of this moisture with the rest of the state. Here’s hoping that spring brings favorable conditions to everyone.

Time to donate Rounds for Research It's that time of year again when GCSAA chapters all over the nation start gathering donated rounds of golf for Rounds 4 Research. I have noticed on the EIFG website that there are states participating this year for the first time, which is a very good sign.

This national program has really grown over the last 2 to 3 years and early indications show that this could be our best year ever. Chapters in my region have organized committees to procure the donated rounds. This seems to be an effective way to get the ball rolling.

But remember, you don't have to wait on your phone to ring to donate. The donation process is super simple. First, go to the GCSAA homepage and under the login box you will see " Donate a Round". Click on "Donate a Round" and fill out the information. The whole process should take less than 5 minutes.

Remember that this program also needs people in your area to purchase the donated rounds.

GCSAA's Mischia Wright can help you with the marketing needs for your area. he database of previous purchasers has grown to almost 1 million over the last few years but you should still market to your area for better success. Contact state golf associations and let them know about the program and they can get the information to all of their members via newsletters or email blasts. Market the program to your own facility as well because many of your customers will be interested in playing other courses nearby. I wish you all success this year and don't hesitate to contact me if you need some help.

In March, the chapter held it’s annual Legacy Scholarship Fundraiser and Turf Day at White Wing Golf Club. Host Cash Lane had the course in great shape. The chapter raised more than $22,000 to fund Legacy Scholarships in 2019!

Steve Gilley goes wire-to-wire to claim GCSAA National Championship The superintendent from Panorama Golf Club in Conroe, Texas, survived difficult playing conditions to win his first tournament title by four shots.

Steve Gilley made his first GCSAA National Championship one to remember.

The superintendent at Panorama Golf Club in Conroe, Texas, fired a two-day total of 2-over-par 176 and went wireto-wire on Monday to win the 2019 event, played out on the Champions Course at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif. Gilley captured the title by four shots over a pair of multiple GCSAA National Championship winners: Michael Stieler, CGCS, and Seth Strickland.

Leading by two shots entering the final round, Gilley battled not only the field but Mother Nature to earn his first GCSAA title. Gusty winds and occasional rain made the going tough for all 72 competitors in the National Championship field on Monday, but it was Gilley who best navigated those conditions.

Although he didn't record a birdie during the final round, he did play the steadiest round among the contenders, with 15 pars and three bogeys en route to his final-round 75.
