Our host JD Franz and his staff welcomed more than 80 players who enjoyed great course conditions and a day of fun and camaraderie.

Schools out for the summer, kids are on the loose and boy has summer arrived with a vengeance. It seems like spring is a distant memory. Many courses saw record numbers of rounds in March, April and May and then someone hit the heat switch. It has not stopped the flow of golfers to our courses, but it certainly has given us all a rude awakening of how we are always at the mercy of mother nature.

For all of us across the state, we all are battling the heat, lack of rain and getting aerifications done and dusted.

This is a busy time of year for us all. When I was thinking about what to write in the newsletter for all our members this quarter, something that happened very close to home struck me as a perfect topic for us all. This relates to something we all often forget to do or do not think it is important.

Recently, a good friend of mine (my neighbor across the street) had a melanoma removed from his ear. After a routine follow up, the medical professionals discovered a node in his neck was not 100%, and, one thing led to the another. This resulted in a complete body scan and a finally a biopsy. The reality has hit home for him and his family. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Skin Cancer on his lungs. He has 4 children from the ages of 14 to 6 and his diagnosis is such that he may never see any of his children graduate from high school.

I believe in being honest and forthright with everyone. This is not a scare tactic, but a reality check to us all. We work outdoors in some of the harshest environments throughout the state of Texas. My message this quarter is simple. Do not be complacent and think it will never happen to you. Taking a few minutes to properly apply sun screen or wearing the appropriate clothing will go a long way. Even the use of sunglasses will aid and assist in cancer prevention. I really believe that as Superintendents, and even our Vendors and Affiliates too, we get too busy and neglect and often forget to take even simple measures to prevent sun damage to our skin. The odds are simply not in our favor with the environment we all work in. I’m not perfect and admit that I have fallen short of adequate protection against the sun at times. However, after hearing of his ordeal and the path he is now on, I have decided to take the pledge and apply sun lotion every day before I leave the house. It’s not too late and I hope you all understand the importance of this simple practice. Let’s all make it a lifelong habit and protect ourselves.

An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.

We had a great turn out of players from across the state at the Texas Cup at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. The overall winners of Jeff Smelser and Ed Martinez were a tough duo to beat on the day. Ed managed 10 birdies!! Someone needs to get the guy a tour card or something. Our next event will be the Texas Trophy being hosted by Corpus Christi Country Club and our Gulf Coast Chapter. Check the LSGCSA.org website for dates, times, and more info on how to get signed up. This will be a great event and I look forward to seeing you all there.

Finally, I would like to put in a special mention to Russell Tippie, one of our Central Texas Superintendents. He was involved in a major car accident the weekend before the Texas Cup. He is an active member at our Lonestar and Central events and we are all praying for a speedy and full recovery to some of the injuries Russell attained as a result of the crash. There was a golf fundraising event at Delaware Springs on June 30th and I would like to thank all who participated to help out Russell and his family. 2018 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Our association had eight scholarship applications submitted for the Fall 2018 semester. We were able to award each applicant a $1000.00 scholarship. This is made possible through the support and participation in our annual Scholarship & Research Tournament, the Silent Auction held each year at our conference, and the Split-the Pot jackpots at each meeting.

FATHER AND SON LEGACY Fore Brown and his father, Tom Brown, together at the Midland meeting. Tom Brown was recognized for his many accomplishments in and contributions to the golf industry.

Tom was the superintendent at the Midland Country Club during his career, and now his son, Fore, continues that family tradition.

Principles of Golf Course Agronomy Principles of Golf Course Business Leadership and Communication Certificate Environmental Management/Best Management Practices Certificate

The certificates are golf-centric, available to GCSAA members and non-members, and can be completed in any order. It is strongly recommended that an assistant superintendent has at least two years of work experience before beginning any of the ASCS certificates. However, the certificates are available to all and not limited to assistants.

EDWIN BUDDING AWARD Deadline for Nominations - August 31

The GCSAA Edwin Budding Award, presented in partnership with Jacobsen, is given annually to an individual in the turf equipment industry whose actions have gone above and beyond the norm to help shape the turf equipment management industry into what it is today. Edwin Budding was one of those individuals who helped define golf, not as a player, but as an engineer. He designed the first reel mower, which has shaped golf as we know it today.

Criteria Nominees must have influenced significant change within the turf equipment industry above and beyond normal day-to-day work. The contribution must be significant in both substance and duration and result in an actual, measurable accomplishment. The nominee must not have been a recipient of this award during the preceding 10 years. The winner will be chosen by the GCSAA Board of Directors, and the winner will receive the award at the annual Golf Industry Show.

GCSAA OPERATIONS SURVEYS In 2012, GCSAA began a series of surveys aimed at gathering in-depth operational data for the golf course management industry. The operations surveys provide data that allows superintendents to compare their facility to nationwide and regional data averages, as well as averages by facility type and green fee.

Audubon International and EDF team up to launch Monarchs in the Rough Audubon International and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) recently partnered to launch Monarchs in the Rough, a program to assist golf courses in the United States, Canada and Mexico in creating habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators in out-of-play areas.

The program first rolled out in January 2018 with a goal of enrolling 100 courses. Since the program surpassed its initial goal by enrolling more than 250 courses, it has set a new goal of enrolling 500 additional courses. A new website also launched to feature participating courses.

“The response from the golf community to helping pollinators recover from dramatic declines in recent years has been tremendous,” said Christine Kane, CEO of Audubon International. “Habitat loss is a key driver of the monarch butterfly’s decline, and golf courses are uniquely positioned to help create new habitat and turn things around for this iconic species.”

Golf course properties occupy approximately 2.5 million acres in the United States. Audubon International estimates there are at least 100,000 acres that have the potential to become suitable habitat for butterflies and bees, if managed appropriately.

Monarchs in the Rough encourages golf courses to adopt conservation practices such as planting milkweed and other wildflowers that monarchs need to breed and feed, in addition to changing mowing practices to support the timing of the monarch’s migration, and protecting sites from pesticide treatments.

“We bring the scientific expertise and the technical support, and the golf courses bring the land and the staff who are already well positioned to implement conservation practices,” said Daniel Kaiser, senior manager of habitat markets at EDF. Monarchs in the Rough provides course superintendents and staff with the information they need to incorporate monarch habitat into the unique layout of each course.

“This program is not only helping turn things around for the monarch – it’s also an opportunity for the golf community to change the assumptions many people have about golf courses being unsustainable,” said Yank Moore, land manager for the Jekyll Island Authority and Golf Club in Jekyll Island, Ga. “We have a real opportunity here to showcase the stewardship ethic of golf course managers and superintendents, and to educate the public about conservation practices that support monarchs and other pollinators.”
