Beyond the Performance
1
At TPA, we believe live performance has the power to inspire, connect, and strengthen our community. Beyond the stage, we create opportunities for audiences of all ages to engage more deeply with the performing arts through School Day Performances, workshops, masterclasses, and pre- and postshow conversations. These experiences foster creativity, spark curiosity, and build meaningful connections between audiences and artists, ensuring the impact of every performance continues long after the curtain falls.
2
Our 26/27 season is underway, bringing a spectacular lineup of performances and a number of ways to interact with our visiting artists. Here are a few highlights from this past season:
12
1
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater hosted a community workshop where participants learned movements from its iconic masterpiece Revelations, led by Ailey teaching artists Nasha Thomas and Jerijah West.
2
The cast of the high-flying Cirque Mechanics: TILT! snapped a selfie following their School Day Performance, capturing the energy of Austin-area students in a packed Bass Concert Hall.
3
Following a performance of her new theatre work Shopping Center of the Universe, visionary artist Robin Frohardt invited audience members onstage for a closer look at the intricately hand-built cardboard set.
4
Ahead of The Look of Love, dancers from the legendary Mark Morris Dance Group led a workshop for Pflugerville High School students before their January performance at Bass Concert Hall.
5
In March, TPA welcomed more than 900 attendees to Bass Concert Hall to unveil its 26/27 Broadway in Austin Season, the biggest yet with 11 incredible shows. The festive evening featured guest appearances by Broadway stars such as Nasia Thomas from Death Becomes Her.

The Heller Awards for Young Artists Take the Stage at Bass Concert Hall
This highly anticipated event celebrates the exceptional talents of students and educators across the Greater Austin area, while also fostering the next generation of Broadway performers. What began with 19 participating schools in its inaugural year has since expanded to include 40 schools—and continues to grow. Modeled after the Tony Awards®, the HAYAs honor the entire high school musical experience, on and off the stage. Awards are presented in 19 categories such as best

production, lead and supporting performers, and technical design. Through TPA’s partnership with the Broadway League, two HAYA participants are selected each year to represent Central Texas at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, known as the Jimmy Awards, in New York City. Students participate in a ten-day professional training intensive with notable Broadway professionals. This year, London Mays of Weiss High School and Isaiah Barafwala of Rouse High School earned that honor, representing Austin on the national stage. Mark your calendars! The 2027 HAYAs will take place on May 12 at Bass Concert Hall. Want to make a difference in the lives of students at TPA? Contact support@texasperformingarts.org or call 512.232.8567.
Major support is provided by the Heller Awards for Young Artists Endowment, the Cipione Family Foundation, Sangeeta Kaur & Hai Nguyen, the Marc and Carolyn Seriff Endowment for High School Musical Theater, and the Heller Awards for Young Artists Executive Producers: Andrew & Mary Ann Heller, Bettye Nowlin, Heather Petkovsek, Carolyn & Marc Seriff, and an anonymous donor. LETTER FROM NEIL The idea of a Broadway musical about my life has always been a daunting one. It wasn’t until the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease prematurely ended my touring career that I started to seriously consider the prospect. I say “prematurely” because my heart and soul would tour until the day I die if only my body would cooperate. My friend and longtime producer Bob Gaudio had some success with his little show, Jersey Boys (perhaps you’ve heard of it?), so I went to him for some guidance on where to begin. Bob brought in Ken Davenport and together they built the incredible creative team that became, A Beautiful Noise. When Anthony McCarten came on board, we spent hours talking. It was his idea to frame the show in the context of therapy sessions. I loved the idea and never shied away from talking about my years of psychoanalysis. There used to be a stigma around talking about mental health and thankfully through the years, it’s become an important and accepted topic of conversation. Sitting in the theatre and watching the show has itself been therapeutic: reliving some joyful and some of the painful parts of my life, wishing perhaps that if I could only make a few edits in the script, it would change some of the reality of what I was seeing. But in the end, coming to terms with my life and accepting it has somehow come full circle. I feel fortunate and full of gratitude for all the people in my life. It is each of them who have impacted and shaped me in their own way to get me to the place where I am now…a better man. A better father. A better husband. A better songwriter. I’d like to thank Marcia and Jaye, this story wouldn’t be possible without you. My children and grandchildren for your most important supporting roles in my life. My wife, Katie, who encouraged me to keep going through this process and finally, to Dr. Lu Katzman, my longtime therapist who inspired this story. May she rest in peace.
