Chambers County Covid-19 Update

By Wade Thibodeaux Chambers County has a total of eight persons affected with the Covid-19/ Corona Virus as of press time. The break down is five in West Chambers County, Two in East Chambers County and one in Mid Chambers County.

Chambers County Judge Jimmy Sylvia issued an amendment to the orders previously

issued and all previous provisions apply as well as a new order that extends the time of the order to April 30, 2020 and a new provision that stops all self serve items at local stores including food and beverages(fountain drinks, coffee, self serve hot dogs, etc.).

On a positive note, several companies are donating much

needed supplies to help keep the medical personnel as safe as possible.

Vortech Contracting donated several boxes of the mask that were badly needed by the County and Marlin donated 50 of the Tyvek safety suits as well as mask that were sent to first responders locally in Winnie. This Covid-19 situation is

This week I’m going to tell you another bathroom story.....well, actually it’s true so it’s not really a story but instead we’ll call it a bathroom occurrence. I don’t really know why so many things happen to me in public restroom, but they just do. Maybe, it’s because I attend so many public meetings like school board, commissioners court, hospital district, and so on, and consequently I spend a lot of time in public bathrooms, but here’s what happened the other day. I was at a public meeting and it was just about the time that all of this Corona

Virus or Covid-19 thing started getting really ramped up. There was a break in the meeting and several of us headed to the bathroom. I had finished my business and was waiting on the fellow at the sink to finish washing his hands so that I could wash my hands and it seemed like he was taking a long time to finish. Since I knew him fairly well and I’ve never really been bashful about speaking my mind, I made some off the wall comment about how long it was taking him to wash his hands. He explained to me that the new pro-

tocol to properly wash your hands with this virus running around was 20 seconds of good soaping and scrubbing.

He further went on to say that it’s a good practice to say The Lord’s Prayer while you are washing your hands and that takes about 20 seconds, so when you are finished with the Prayer, your hands are clean and should be free of the virus.

That kinda stuck with me and I’ve got to tell you folks.......I don’t think that I have ever prayed as much as I have in the last couple of weeks. As one Facebook meme said “I’ve washed

my hands so much lately that I’ve pulled off enough dead skin to reveal the answers to my sixth grade math test�.

This virus thing is ever changing and evolving and getting more serious by the day, if not hour. It’s a good thing that we were home bound lately and really couldn’t do much of anything because it took pretty much all of my time keeping up with the ever changing situation in several County’s.

About the time that I would get something posted for Winnie, something would happen in Huntsville and I would be off chasing those details. You throw in a couple of mistakes in the numbers posted by the State and it got really crazy. Not to mention all of the

experts on Facebook who were posting all kinds of crazy stuff(If it’s on the internet, it must be true.....right????) and it was a full time job just trying to keep everybody informed with verified information. But, hey......it’s what we do and I hope that I’ve earned your trust with the information that has been posted.

On another tangent.......if I haven’t said “Thank You� to our Doctor’s, Nurse’s, Medical Personnel, EMS, and all First Responder’s lately, let’s not waste another minute.

Thank YOU guys and gals who are taking care of the rest of us and risking your life for me and mine. It is our responsibility to follow the guidelines and rules so that this “Thing�

will be over sooner rather than later and we can all go back to some sort of normalcy and those folks that take care of us can maybe have a little social distancing of their own and relax for just a bit. I realize that these days are not easy on a lot of folks, but remember that this is nothing compared to a past generation that lived through the great depression and World War II and we will get through this in time. Follow those guidelines, wash those hands and say that prayer....... it can’t hurt and on top of the religious benefits...... you’ll have really clean, soft hands.

CLOSURE OVERKILL

You don’t have to ”snooze to lose” in this rapidly changing Covid-19 environment – all you must do is blink.

Last week, I wrote about “cabin fever” caused by business closures, social distancing and shelter in place directives causing isolation and restlessness -- that a good way to counteract those effects would be to head to a nearby park.

Now, many of the parks in which you might have enjoyed breathing clean, fresh air while getting some much-needed exercise and maybe a meal or two of fish have been closed. For-

get my suggestion for beating the isolation by taking a walk in the woods. The solitude of a park with hiking trails and a concrete-free environment is now off limits in places. And boat ramps have been closed. But is closing public boat ramps and parks justified?

Especially boat ramps? If you’re out in a boat on the water, you are in a most virus-free area. As far as park closures are concerned, if overcrowding was threatening breach of the sixfoot social distancing due to overcrowding, couldn’t a maximum park entry number be established and enforced with minor personnel exposure? I’m not seeing a threat. Are they expecting

hordes of drooling people arriving? I haven’t seen any numbers, but in Central Texas, I see locals that have probably not been in a state park for decades, if at all. There are several recently closed parks that I’ve been in and never seen anyone else there, nor even an attendant.

The National Park Service has even dispensed with entry fees to encourage visitation. Texas State Parks are still open although fewer attendants and services are available and credit cards are the preferred currency. No cash or checks accepted.

And it’s better to go through the State Park online registration system in advance.

That’s a built-in control against overcrowding.

Most of the closures have been the work of municipalities or others controlling parklands.

According to a reliable journalist in Houston, Port Aransas has closed fishing on the jetties and from the bank.

Some Corps of Engineers parks, like Lake Granger, are closed, but the boat ramps are said to be open.

The ramps on Fayette County Lake are closed as are the ones on Lake Bastrop.

The popular ramp on Lake Travis at Mansfield Dam is closed. But several private ramps are open, according to fishermen.

In fact, local anglers and tackle shops are good sources of information, provided the shops haven’t been closed.

Some of the big

box outdoor stores are still open and the Texas Attorney General’s opinion on interfering with firearm sales may keep others open.

President Trump agrees. Being in a high-risk category myself and married to a registered nurse who has spent most of the past two weekends -and 10-12-hour-

days in between -- working on the coronavirus threat, rest assured I’m aware of the awful consequences of infection. I want none of it. I believe in doing everything possible to END the coronavirus spread.

But with common sense.

Sunday observations

I’m going to take this time and give y’all a quick lesson on the Great Depression. Bear with me, for some facts many will find useless. A decade long financial crisis began with a Wall Street crash in 1929.

It set investors into a panic, selling off, and banks folded, financial institutions closed, and many committed suicide as a result of lost livelihoods. Lasting 10 plus years, it is widely believed what pulled us out of the Depression, was the entry into WWII, in 1943.

Millions sent to

war, but they were employed, and it helped.

Women went to work in our factories, making much needed war relief supplies.

Items were rationed.

And you could not run to Walmart to pick up your favorite cereal as it did not exist. You ate what was fixed.

You spent time with your family. You fixed something when it broke. You sacrificed..... except you never knew you were sacrificing because it was life.

All of this being said, if you were lucky enough to have grandparents who told you of

these times, I hope you listened. If you weren’t, I hope you pay attention in History. If nothing else, if you are currently home with your kids, look it up and TEACH THEM. You see, a knowledge of true hardship, may teach them the value of what they have. It may teach them that you never take more than you need. It may teach them the survival skills needed to get through what is going to be this generations milestone. Folks, all kidding aside.

This virus is serious. I don’t

say this to panic anyone, I say this to make you be smart.

Don’t think so?

Talk to one single health care worker.

YOU may think it’s no big deal, and you may carry on, gathering in groups in a parking lot to chat, having meetings, meeting with friends at the beach, park, or whatever. But those forced to be around you may not. They may have a loved one in ICU, an immune disorder, an elderly relative, or they may just choose to heed the warnings.

When you choose to carry on as if nothing

is happening, you force your choices on me. How you can get angry at me because you don’t want me to force my choices on you, baffles me.Not one person has the right to force their choices on anyone else. If I choose to “be a sheep and abide by the recommendations” my choice doesn’t affect you at all.

If you choose to buck the system, to ignore the warnings, and to carry on as normal, know I will mace you with Lysol..... and your choice may kill me, or my loved one.

You are being asked

to stay home. To be a decent human being. To avoid people. To maintain distance. Sit down, shut up, and keep someone else’s loved ones safe.

Your convenience and comfort is not worth my families safety.

Period.

Happy Sunday peeps, think of others for a change, read about the Depression if you think you are suffering, and for goodness sake stop stockpiling toilet paper. You’re Americans. Show some dignity.

Chambers County ESD No.1 has Brief Meeting

minutes. Basically, the board approved the financials that showed a balance of $1,045,366.56, approved paying the bills, and accepted the administrator ’s report that said that hopefully

by Tropical Storm Imelda would be completed by the end of April. The Winnie -Stowell Volunteer Fire Department Chief gave a report that

showed 33 calls for the month of February with a total of 72 for 2020.

The next regular meeting of the Chambers County Emergency Services District No.1 Board of Commissioners

will be Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at 6:00 pm. and more than likely will be conducted via teleconference due to the effects of the Covid-19/ Corona Virus.
