This week I’m going to reference a couple of country songs in my column. The first one is

by Hank Williams, Jr. and is titled “Dinosaur”.

The second is the current single from Blake Shelton titled “I lived it”. Now, you might ask what does a couple of country songs have to do with this weeks column.....and I’ll tell you. It all has to do with technology and the world that we live in today. I will be the first to admit that when it comes to technology, I’m a dinosaur. I use technology just like anyone else.....but I’m way behind the curve as far as being on the breaking edge of new

technology and new gadgets. The second song...for those of you who have not heard it.... talks about a simpler time in life when things were not so fast paced.

He sings about putting a hundred thousand miles on a Sears box fan and about putting tobacco on his hand when the yellow jackets tore him up. Blake also sings about riding around with his Uncle who smoked Salem’s with the windows up and about drinking from a hose and spitting in a cup. He goes on to say that he wouldn’t dream of spending a $2 dollar bill that he got for pushing a lawn mower around all summer and

Now.....I’m not exactly sure that I would agree completely about going that far back, but somehow I think that we as a society have forgotten some of those times and the character that it built in all of us.

Has technology really helped us?????? Sure, you say. But, think about it. Time is time, and nobody has figured out how to create more time. We had work to do back then and we have work to do now, and have we really made any progress in getting ahead in life.

We all seem to live in a much more frantic world these days and I think that has caused a tremendous amount of problems in society.

Look at the divorce rate....it’s much higher now as a percentage of the population, and look at the suicide rate.

It used to be very rare that we would even hear about a suicide, much less know someone that committed suicide, but these days it seems to be so very common and it hits too close to home for many of us. Ask people about how happy they are with their job????? The percentage of unhappy workers has been steadily climbing over the past decades.

They say....whoever “They” are, that sweating is good for you and relieves some tension, however as we have more and more technology, we seem to have less and less of the jobs that require sweating and therefore it seems that tensions are on the rise for most Americans.

I told you in past columns that I was going to keep the school shooting thing in my columns for awhile and I think that somehow all of this ties

into this. Now, I’m not saying that technology is responsible for the school shootings, but collectively, somehow it’s a piece of the puzzle. We have a couple of generations now that have grown up with technology, divorced parents, gender neutral situations, not knowing who really won the little league baseball game and maybe most importantly,not knowing that if you screwed up, then there was probably some repercussions that involved a board or belt being joined in harmony with your backside. It’s not too far of a stretch in my simple mind to put the pieces of the puzzle together that if a kid is not happy at home due to parents who are trying to find personal happiness and stress relief from work by ignoring the kid, who’s primary entertainment is video games, doesn’t

think that there are any repercussions for his actions, and who is exposed to suicide on a way too often basis, then they can become the next active shooter.

That may be the only “Glory” (In their mind) that that kids ever gets.

OK....I’ll quit now, and I’ll admit that I don’t have the answers, but I will tell you that in my opinion, we need to do something different, because what we’re doing doesn’t seem to be working so well.

Maybe we need a few more Dinosaurs that have lived it and not so many tech oriented people. Take a kids cell phone and xbox away and turn yours off and go fishing. That probably won’t solve all of the problems.....but it may be a start. Till next time, I’mWade in the Shade...

Chambers County Emergency Services District #1 Agrees to Refund State of Texas

The Chambers County Emergency Services District # 1 Board of Commissioners held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 6:00 pm. in the Fire Station located at 825 State Highway 124 in Winnie, Texas. One of the few items on the agenda that garnered any action was

the discussion about repayment to the State of Texas for an over payment of sales taxes.

Apparently, the State of Texas sent too much money to the CCESD # 1 and wants some of it back. Wayne Wilber, Administrator for the district explained to the Commissioners that after a conversation with officials at the State

level, they explained to him that these errors sometimes occur, especially with taxes associated with energy sources and upon an audit, the figures are corrected. The State requested $20,067.92 in refund and the District could simply write a check for that amount or they could repay the amount over 38 months

with no interest. The board decided to take the 38 month option and have the amount deducted from the monthly payment that the State Comptroller sends to the District every month.

In other action, the Administrator told the board that all fluids and repairs on all equipment that had any Hur-

ricane Harvey damage had been completed.

The board approved all of the routine items such as approval of minutes from previous meetings and the financial report that showed $707,454.05 in total cash and assets.

There were no public comments and the short meeting was adjourned at 6:22 pm. The next

regular meeting of the Chambers County Emergency Services District will be Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 6:00 pm. in the Fire Station located at 825 State Highway 124 in Winnie, Texas.

Trinity Bay Has Split Vote Over Lunch

The Trinity Bay Conservation District Board of Directors met in regular session on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 9:00 am. in their offices located at 2500 State Highway 124 in Stowell, Texas. One of the more contentious items on the agenda was item number 11 which was the approval of a safety appreciation lunch for the TBCD employees.

Director Dorothy Fay Hamilton made a comment that it wasn’t in this years budget and it shouldn’t happen. One of the other directors answered back that the employees had been working extremely hard and had gone above and beyond during the recent freeze and they deserved

to be recognized and rewarded with a safety appreciation lunch.

He further went on to say that the employees needed to know that the board recognized their efforts and appreciated the employees. Board President Mike Winzer read a letter of appreciation to the employees that was published in a local paper and after some further discussion, a motion was made to host the luncheon. The vote followed with 3 directors voting for the lunch, Hamilton voting against, and Director Jeffery Jenkins abstaining.

Another item that generated quite a bit of discussion was the acceptance of an easement

from Yale Devillier for the Mayhaw Lateral # 1 project. This project is for the widening and deepening of a drainage ditch that runs along the Eastern boundary of the East Chambers ISD and then ties in to Mayhaw Bayou to allow for better drainage to the area. Chambers County has agreed to pay for the easement of this property and is working on other property owners and will give the easement to Trinity Bay to allow TBCD to do the work. Once again Director Hamilton had some concerns about the project due to a small parcel of land that had some title issues and was worried about eminent domain being forced

upon the land owners.

She was reassured that the County was doing the title research to identify the multiple owners and that no land was going to be taken from the owners. Eventually, a motion was made to accept the easement and the vote was unanimous for accepting the easement.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Tracey and Justin Woody addressed the board about some work that TBCD was doing that involved crossing their land in the Smith Point area. They were both very agreeable to allowing TBCD access to the property and just simply wanted to make sure that the

land and roads would be returned to the condition that they were in before Trinity Bay entered the property. The board was very pleased with the cooperation of the land owners and assured them that TBCD would take care of their property. In other action, the board approved the minutes of the previous meeting held February 14, 2018 and approved the financial report that showed $8,024,000.00 in total cash and assets.

They also approved the monthly tax report and the payment of the accounts payable. The board also approved advertising for Request for Proposals for debris monitoring services and disaster recovery

services. The rest of the meeting was spent receiving reports from the various departments before the board went into executive session at 10:24 am. After executive session, the board emerged to approve a memo to the general manager about the boards expectations of the general managers duties. The next regular meeting of the Trinity Bay Conservation District Board of Directors will be Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 9:00 am. in their offices located at 2500 State Highway 124 in Stowell, Texas.
