Winnie Celebrates 4th of July in Style

Ethan Rodriguez from High Island High School, Fireworks illuminated the Friday night skies as the Chamber of Commerce and Colton Savoie from provided their annual fireworks show in the Winnie Stowell Park.

By Wade Thibodeaux  The Winnie area celebrated the 4th of July in style last weekend with displays of patriotism in a variety of ways. The Chamber of Commerce provided their annual fireworks show on Friday night with watchers lining the streets around the Winnie Stowell Park and most people following the guidelines of staying in their cars and practicing social distancing. The show lasted for over 20 minutes with fireworks illuminating the night sky and dazzling the crowd. Many businesses had flags flying to show their patriotism and of course individuals celebrated in a variety of ways from setting off their own fireworks to hosting family gatherings.

Babin’s Statement on the House Passage of the INVEST in America Act

U.S. Congressman Brian Babin (TX-36) released the following statement in response to the House passage of the INVEST in America Act (H.R. 2) earlier this evening. “H.R. 2 was packed full of radical Green New Deal policies that I could never support,� said Babin. “Overall, this bill fails to provide the funding and resources to the appropriate areas and programs to meet America’s infrastructure needs. I will work tirelessly with my Senate counterparts to ensure that 1-14 is included in any future transportation and infrastructure bill that becomes law.�

Bull Rider Dallee Mason Splits Prescott Win

Dallee Mason isn’t a young, up-and-coming bull rider.

At age 32, however, the Idaho cowboy craves the adrenaline rush and can still compete with the PRCA’s best cowboys.

Mason proved that when he split the win with Daylon Swearingen at the World’s Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, Ariz., which concluded July 5.

by Wade Thibodeaux Ok....I'm often guilty of questioning someone whenever they say they are on vacation. I often say......vacation.....I'm not familiar with that term...... can you explain. I have to confess that I took a few days this past week....not a whole week or more, but a couple of days. I took off the Thursday afternoon before the 4th of July and headed up to Ft. Worth to visit a friend of mine. I stayed Thursday night, Friday, and most of Saturday before I had to return to shoot pictures of the fireworks in Huntsville Saturday evening.

I have always liked the Ft Worth area and things have not changed since I last visited a few years ago.

We just messed around the area for a couple of days, doing pretty much

nothing of any importance, but yet enjoying ourselves as we explored the area. We ventured out to Lake Lewisville and found a nice little bar and grill located on the water and did have a couple of adult beverages as we watched the really nice boats coming and going from the dock. One thing about that area is that Uber is pretty cheap because you don't have to travel very far to find pretty much anything that you are looking for and they are really fast because there are so many drivers in the area. Uber and Lyft have pretty much replaced the Taxi business as I don't even recall seeing a taxi during my entire stay. Friday was a different kind of day as we ventured out a little farther and went

to this place called Nebraska Furniture Mart..... it's like a Home Depot and Conn's stores combined......except on steroids. They pretty much have everything that you could possibly ever need except groceries. Need a bed....they have it..... need a pool table.....they have it......need some flooring for your house.... yep, they have it.....how about a lawnmower...... you guessed it, they have it. That place is so big that you could spend a week inside of it and never really see everything, but we gave it our best shot. A late lunch and then a little power nap before heading out to Oklahoma to visit the world's largest casino. This is another place that's huge......I think that you could put all of the Louisiana casino's inside of this place and still have room for a small State like maybe Rhode Island.

My friend had one of those fancy watches that counts your steps and we walked 10,000 steps....... inside the casino.

Saturday was another exploring kind of day as

we traveled to Grapevine to visit the Gaylord hotel and resort. That's another great big place with all kinds of things to do inside, including watching the river wind its way through the huge atrium at the center of the place.

I tell you that I walked so much that I had leg cramps at night from using those muscles that

hadn't been pushed like that in a while. I also need to confess that I felt a little guilty on the first day because I was taking off of work and I had plenty of things to do, but by the third day I was like..... this taking off of work is an okay kind of thing.

However, all good things have to come to an end and I needed to get back

to the working world and concentrate on putting a couple of newspapers together in order to fund the little side trips that I think I may just have to indulge myself in about once a month. EXPLORING THE TEXAS UNDERGROUND

Bill Bentley of Midland belongs to a spelunking group that explores Texas caves. He has been in dark places beneath Texas 40 years.

“I went with some friends back in May of 1980 into some caves near Carlsbad, New Mexico. While we were caving that weekend I got bit by the cave bug.”

He’s been to a bunch of caves, mostly in Texas and Eastern New Mexico. But he has also done caving in Missouri, Arkansas and other states. He has had some interesting adventures.

“I’ve seen some awfully pretty places. It’s really exciting to find what is called virgin passage when your eyes are the first ones to ever view a new cave or a new area of an established cave.

It’s a thrill to know that no other human has ever looked at what you’re seeing. That’s when the exploring really pays off.”

He says Midland is a good place for cavers because you can go 200 miles in almost any direction to find lots of caves.

“New Mexico’s Lincoln National Forest has some of what I call world class caves. They’re highly decorated and extremely deep. You have to have ropes to get in and out.”

Bill admits that one of the most beautiful caves in Texas is Sonora Caverns. It gets loads of tourists especially in the summer because people are looking for a cool place. It’s also warmer than the outside temperature in winter. It’s not as deep as some of the caves Bill has visited.

“There’s a place in Carlsbad Caverns called Lake of the Clouds.

It’s the lowest point in Carlsbad Caverns, somewhere around 1,100 feet. Rocks are arranged to look like clouds and there’s water all around below. It’s a beautiful area. It’s also quite warm because we’re closer to the center of the earth.”

Bill has discovered some new caves.

“Caves are being found all the time. I’ve found 3 or 4 in my 40 years of exploring. Down in Terrell County we found

a cave called Troll Cave, which turned out to be the 11th deepest cave in the state. We explored it thoroughly. In 1981 we found one that had never been fully explored before called the Wizard’s Well. I was on one of the last exploring trips in there before the landowner shut it down.

We were in there 28 or 30 hours non-stop, just constantly going.”

He says Texas has so many caves there’s no way to get to all of them.

“I think there’s something like 20,000 caves in Texas. Some are quite small, but I’d like to try to go to all of them. It would take a lifetime to do that.”

Thirty individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, June 28 and Saturday, July 4. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been magistrated and formally

informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not everyone charged with a crime

is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals were arrested on outstanding

warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

Garrett Hale Crowned as Cody Stampede's First Steer Roping Champ Garrett Hale made ProRodeo history as the first steer roping champion for the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede on July 4.

Named after former resident and American icon Buffalo Bill Cody, the town of Cody prides itself as the “Rodeo Capital of the World,” and 2020 marks the dawning of a new century for this iconic Wyoming rodeo with steer roping in the mix for the first time since the rodeo began in 1919.

“I’d like to thank the rodeo committee for having us, they didn’t have to, but they did,”

Hale said. “That was probably the most excited I’ve been, to hear that Cody had steer roping. I have always wanted to (rope) steers there. We were tickled. I loved it and hope they keep adding.”

Since they’re Cody’s first, Hale and Landon McClaugherty set the Cody steer roping records – Hale with 20.2 seconds on two head and McClaugherty with his 8.1-second run in Round 2.

Hale compared steer roping in Cody’s arena to the arenas at the Black Hills Roundup in

Belle Fourche, S.D., and the Walker County Fair & Rodeo in Huntsville, Texas.

“The arena at Cody is a bit bigger, but the setup was great for steer roping,” Hale said. “And the steers were outstanding, and that made the roping a lot tougher, particularly since more than half the people had a chance to win at any go round.”

Hale hit the arena with a firstplace run of 9.1 seconds in Round 1, and although he was out of the money in the second round, he maintained a 0.9-second lead in the

average to go home with $4,478.

“It was tough today for a twoheader, everyone was going as fast as they possibly could, and it takes a bit of slowing down to be fast in steer roping,” Hale said.

Hale, 28, is no stranger to ProRodeo success. The Snyder, Texas, cowboy has won more than $250,524 since his rookie year in 2012, thanks in part to qualifying for the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping in 2018-19.

“Everything was smooth, and

that’s what got me the win,” Hale said. “I had a pretty big high coming onto the bus back home today. I was pretty speechless.”

His Independence Day was made even sweeter by winning the World’s Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, Ariz., for $3,620, which brought his weekend total to $8,098.

Before winning Cody, Hale was 10th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $14,864, which was $12,818 shy of taking the No. 1 position.

With a double win on the Fourth of July, Hale is confidently heading to the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Frontier Days and PRCA Rodeo in Weatherford, Texas, and the National Circuit Finals Steer Roping in Torrington, Wyo. “Deadwood (Days Of ’76

Rodeo) is right after that, and my goal is to win it since I’ve come in second twice there,” Hale said, adding that he’d also like to enter the NFSR among the top five.

Other winners at the $297,350 rodeo were all-around cowboy Tuf Cooper ($9,706 in tie-down roping and steer roping); bareback rider Chad Rutherford (90.5 points on Frontier Rodeo's Gun Fire); steer wrestler Ben Kilburg (3.6 seconds); team ropers Erich Rogers/Paden Bray (4.8 seconds); saddle bronc rider Rusty Wright (91.5 points on Frontier Rodeo's Medicine Woman); tie-down ropers West Smith and Tuf Cooper (8.0 seconds each); barrel racer Paige Jones (17.10 seconds); and bull rider Roscoe Jarboe (90 points on Frontier Rodeo's Lookin' Up).

"Which Way?"

Camped by a river in Oklahoma I noticed an interesting life application. A gentle breeze had the top of the water rippling to my left, but because of the waterfall close by I knew the current was flowing to my right.

How easy it is for our lives to appear to be going in one direction when in reality we are headed in another. Everything may seem calm and beautiful, but a great fall is ahead. The Bible warns us, not once, but twice, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but the end is the way of destruction.” (Proverbs 14:12, 16:25) So which way am I really going?

“It’s always good when you make the whistle,” Mason said. “I didn’t know a whole lot about that bull and just rode him jump for jump, and he made me hustle for it. It wasn’t a gimme, that’s for sure, but it turned out to be a good ride.”

Mason earned $7,222 for his eight seconds of work and his first career win in Prescott.

“I’m dang-sure happy I won that buckle,” Mason said. “It’s a cool buckle, and it’s the World’s Oldest Rodeo, which is cool.”

When rodeos were halted from mid-March to the third week of May because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mason kept busy.

“I was working on the family ranch (in Weiser, Idaho) getting the cows turned out for the summer and cowboying,” Mason said. “I’ve also been doing a little bit of team roping.

It’s fun to team rope with my buddies.”

I am sure many would argue this, but at 53 I don’t think of myself as old. But I find myself wondering quite often what has happened to my America.

Don’t get me wrong.

My life as a kid wasnt perfect. I remember forced integration in the early 70’s in Galena Park schools. I remember living in Baytown the Halloween that the Candy Man decided to poison his own son with pixie sticks.... that we had to throw out our candy because we didn’t know where we had been. And lived close. I had a dear childhood friend hit by a truck walking to school,

and I was convinced he was dead. By the Grace is God and Lifeflight, he lives today. I had a friend abducted and murdered.

I had divorced parents before anyone else had a clue what that was. So when I say I miss my America, it’s not all roses and butterflies. Maybe because of those things, I chose early on to focus on the good. You see....

I also had the honor of celebrating July 4, 1976.

I did it in fine fashion by laying my leg on a exhaust pipe on a dirt bike. That scar though still reminds me of 1976. When life wasn’t perfect but it was the America I loved. We shot fireworks. By ourselves, unsupervised.... just snag your parents cigarette lighter, right?

We respected our parents, elders, teachers, police officers, and military. We respected the flag. We played outside. We rode bikes with banana seats, and made ramps out of wood. We were scarred, beat up, dirty, and tired

at the end of the day.

We didn’t care about hydration, when we got thirsty we grabbed a water hose. If we were lucky we had koolaid, that was mixed with 5 lbs of sugar.

We didn’t have phones or iPads or tracking devices, computers, or video games. We had our imagination. We climbed trees, we jumped out of trees, and broke bones, and lived to tell about it.

We had great music.

We had Wings, the Steve Miller band, Neil Diamond, Elvis, the Doobie Brothers, Queen, Marvin Gaye, and ABBA. We didn’t go out to eat all the time. We ate dinner as a family. We cooked. By 1976 I was 9, and already cooking on my own. We bowled.

We roller skated.... see above music.... we went to drive ins. We still had glass bottle cokes, and there was nothing better on a hot day.

Was our government in turmoil? Absolutely.

We were on the heels of the gas crisis, with Jimmy Carter as the president. And we had this little country over seas beginning to send out terrorist that were hijacking planes. Iran.

So yes, the government was in turmoil even back then.

But we had respect.

We were excited to celebrate America’s 200th birthday that year.

Everyone had flags. We loved our country. We loved our lives. We were too young to realize just how much. And how much we would miss the simplicity. Of 1976.

Happy 4th of July weekend peeps. On this most different of holidays, please take time to remember what you loved. What you miss. For me..... it’s respect.

I don’t know how we get back to where we were. But it starts, with unplugging, talking, listening, family, faith, God..... and respect.

THE BEAR FACTS

The late folk singer/ songwriter, Steve Fromholz, penned a whimsical ditty that extolls the charms of bears and even encourages listeners to “take a bear to lunch.”

If you live in Bowie, Titus, or Grayson counties in northeast Texas --or almost any place in the Big Bend Region and west or southwest Texas -- you might not have to look one up to invite it to lunch – that bear just might come to YOU! Bears were once thought

to be extinct in Texas, but sightings in both these divergent corners of Texas located all the long way diagonally across Texas from each other scream that “they’re baack!” Two of those northeast counties border each other, but the third one, Grayson, lies several counties away.

It’s possible there could be bears in several other nearby jurisdictions.

In west Texas, reports of bears sauntering into Fort Davis, Alpine, and Fort Stockton indicate a fairly wide range of territory. You might recall my hunting buddy and I found bear scat on the Big Bend Ranch

State Park well over a hundred miles from Fort Stockton. It was confirmed by TPWD’s highly respected “Bear Lady,” wildlife biologist, Bonnie McKinney. My granddaughter, Laura Jefferson Heinen, also recently photographed one fairly close to her and her husband’s campsite in Big Bend National Park.

In the mid- 80s, we stopped for something cool to drink near Sabinal. Next to the restaurant was a small roadside wildlife park that had a caged bear.

The custodian said they trapped it near Mountain Home in the western

edge of the Hill Country.

I worked in that area then but hadn’t heard of bears there. Sparsely settled, I guess it’s possible.

“There’s been a flurry of bear activity in the Trans-Pecos recently,” said Michael Janis, TPWD District Wildlife Leader. A dry spring caused movement in search of food. “Bears and humans can coexist,” Janis explained.

“The key is preventing bears from accessing human related food sources.” That includes garbage, pet food, and corn or pellets from deer feeders. If a bear continually finds food, according to TPWD, it

can lose fear of humans, leading to trouble. In Colorado, where I led photo workshops for several years, a bear regularly raided the dumpster.

TPWD suggests residents where bears have been sighted can purchase bear-proof garbage dumpsters.

As the attached photo shows, deer feeders are particularly attractive to bears. Electric fencing may be a deterrent as long as it doesn’t repel deer.

Bear sightings in northeast Texas have been increasing since April, according to TPWD. They’re thought

to be entering from Oklahoma, Arkansas and possibly Louisiana.

Through conservation, bears in Louisiana are no longer listed as federally threatened species.

Black bears are protected species in Texas, but hunters occasionally mistake them for hogs.

That’s trouble.

“Bears do not generally pose a threat to livestock or humans,” TPWD biologist Penny Wilkerson says.

My sister-in-law in Minnesota has had stock attacked by problem bears, however.

But whatever you do, don’t smell like food!

Black bears are opportunistic feeders and can easily become dependent on feed from deer feeders, pet food left outside, or garbage cans. There have been increased sightings in two areas of Texas since April. TPWD Photo by Tom Archer.

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE TRINITY BAY CONSERVATION DISTRICT (TBCD) COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT – MITIGATION (CDBG-MIT) PROGRAM The Trinity Bay Conservation District (TBCD) will hold a public hearing on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at 5:30 p.m., at the TBCD office located at 2500 Hwy. 124, Stowell, Texas 77661, regarding the submission of an application to the Texas General Land Office (GLO) for a Texas Community Development Block Grant - Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) grant. The purpose of this meeting is to allow citizens an opportunity to discuss the following: 1) Citizen participation plan; 2) Development of local housing and community development or long-term recovery needs; 3) Amount of CDBG-MIT funding available; 4) Explanation of eligible CDBG-MIT activities; 5) The use of past disaster recovery funds; 6) Amount of funds available to benefit low-to-moderate income persons; 7) If applicable, minimizing displacement of person by project activities; 8) Discussion of the application process; 9) Citizens views, proposals, questions, and comments. The District encourages citizens to participate in the development of this CDBG-MIT application and to make their views known at this public hearing.
