CCSO Makes Arrest at Whataburger
Sheriff Hawthorne reports that on Saturday at approximately 9:30 p.m., Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Deputy B. Croyle was dispatched to the Whataburger located at 14935 FM 1663, in Winnie in reference to harassment and a possible disturbance. While en route, Chambers County dispatch advised that the actor, later identified as Joseph Jontavin Reed, 31, of Winnie, Texas, had attempted to hit the caller with his vehicle. Upon arrival the deputy learned that Reed was involved in a verbal altercation with two employees of Whataburger and while in the drive through lane, tried to strike one of them with his vehicle. While attempting to retrieve identification from Reed, in order to serve a Criminal Trespass warning, Reed rolled
down his window a few inches to hand the deputy his identification and as he reached for the identification, Reed rolled up his window trapping the deputy’s hand. The deputy immediately grabbed the window with his free hand and was able to break the glass freeing his hand. With the help of a Deputy E. Kahla that arrived on scene to assist, Reed was removed from the vehicle and placed in handcuffs as he continued to actively resist. The deputies were finally able to place Reed in handcuffs, but not before they both suffered several cuts to their hands and forearms. One deputy was treated by EMS on scene and required further treatment from the local medical center to remove imbedded glass from his arm; the other deputy did not require medical treatment. Reed was charged with Attempted Aggravated Assault w/ a Deadly Weapon, 3rd Degree Felony and Assault on a Public Servant, 3rd Degree Felony and booked into the Chambers County jail without further incident. Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Randy Van Deventer set bonds totaling $100,000 on the two counts.

East Chambers Has First Ever Outdoor Graduation Ceremony
Fireworks explode over the baseball field as the graduates and the crowd give one last farewell to the graduating class of 2020.
By Wade Thibodeaux  The East Chambers ISD had their first ever outdoor graduation ceremony last Friday, May 29, 2020 on the field of the football stadium. The 113 graduates were given 6 tickets each for friends and family to attend the event because social distancing guidelines
for Covid-19 were in effect and that was the maximum capacity for the stadium with both sets of bleachers being utilized. The event went off with only minor glitches as the microphone and PA system had some major feedback, but the graduates all received their diplomas. The grads
basically ignored the social distancing rules as they locked arms together to sing the school song as they swayed back and forth together as a class for the last time and then they were treated to a surprise of fireworks exploding from the baseball field. Many comments were heard from
the Moms and Dads in the stands that the graduation ceremony was a fitting end to an otherwise stressful and strange year. Photo and copyright credit to Ray Stremecki with reproductions available for purchase by contacting The Hometown Pres
