  Some county offices will have a limited opening on May 4, 2020. The following guidance shall apply: No public allowed at the main courthouse in Anahuac until further notice; 2.

Chambers County Sheriff Office Has a Busy Week Arrest Made in Child Pornography Case

 Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reports that on Wednesday,

04/29/2020, at approximately 7:10 a.m. Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division Detectives and Deputies, executed a search warrant granted by the 344th District Court Judge Randy McDonald for suspect location 7318 Pine Shadows Lane, Baytown, Chambers County, Texas and suspect 64 year old Dennis Ray Reed in regard to possession or promotion of child pornography, a third degree felony.

Evelyn married Morris Standley on Sept 9, 1940 and they had one son, Ronald Morris 'Ronnie' 'Pops' Standley who blessed Evelyn with two grandsons and a granddaughter; Morris Dwayne 'Woody' Standley, Dustin Lynn Standley, and Davonna Marie Standley. Ronnie passed away on Jan 8, 2014.

Evelyn also raised her niece, Linda Stephenson as her own daughter from the time she was four months old in 1956 until adulthood.

Linda now reciprocates that devotion by staying close to Evelyn to meet whatever need she might have.

Detectives determined from information previously collected, facts, and corroborating evidentiary statements that were provided

by Dennis Reed, that Reed knowingly and intentionally possessed, or knowingly or intentionally accessed with intent to view, visual material that visually depicts a child younger than 18 years of age at the time the image of the child was made who is engaging in sexual conduct.

refused all commands. As the Deputy continuously advised Barrientos to exit his vehicle, Barrientos appeared extremely nervous, moving about the cab of the truck and not following any commands given. When Barrientos placed his vehicle in drive and attempted to flee, the deputy discharged his weapon, purposely striking the front right tire which partially disabled the vehicle.

As Barrientos continued to accelerate through the parking lot area he struck several trailers. Realizing that he was unable to exit the parking lot and that he had a flat tire, he exited his vehicle and fled from deputies in to an open field behind the business.

Additional deputies responding to the call quickly set up a perimeter around the field where Barrientos was caught and placed in custody. A search of the suspect vehicle revealed

several firearms, credit cards and birth certificates not belonging to the suspects.

The two suspects were placed under arrest and transported to the Chambers County Jail.

Myles Curtis Akins was charged with the following: • Credit Card Abuse, State Jail Felony Michael Anthony Barrientos was charged with the following: • Evading Arrest Detention, State Jail Felony • Credit Card Abuse, State Jail Felony • Fail to Identify, Class B misdemeanor Akins and Barrientos were arraigned by Chambers County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Randy Van Deventer; bonds totaling $35,000 were set for Barrientos. A $15,000 bond was set for Akins on the Credit Card Abuse charge with a no bond hold for Akins for the charge in Bexar County.

Evelyn Standley Turning 98

  Psalm 90, verse 10 tells us that God has granted to most 70 years of life and some by reason of strength are granted 80.

Well, God sure packed a powerful portion of strength inside the small stature of Linnie Evelyn Stephenson Standley who is set to turn 98 on May 11th, 2020! Evelyn was born to Jessie Ralph Stephenson and Ruby Gena Stphenson (nee Nelson) on May 11, 1922 in Corpus Christi, Texas and moved to Smith Point, Texas when she was five years old. I wasn't around at the time of her birth, but I'd be willing to bet she hit the ground running and has kept that pace for most of her life. If we see the subtle hints of her slowing down now it is certainly not by any choice of her

 Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reports that on Wednesday April 29, 2020 at approximately 4:00 p.m., a Chambers County deputy was dispatched to Extreme Trailers of Texas located at 15625 IH 10 in reference to a male trying to purchase a trailer with a stolen credit card. Upon arrival, contact was made with the suspect who was identified as 25 year old Myles Curtis Akins of Austin, Texas. A check with Dispatch revealed that Akins

had an outstanding felony theft warrant out of Bexar County.

After placing Akins into custody for the warrant, the deputy approached a second suspect, later identified as 27 year old Michael Anthony Barrientos, of San Antonio, Texas, who was the driver of a Dodge Ram 1500 four door truck waiting in the parking lot to pick up the trailer. The Deputy approached Barrientos and instructed him to exit the vehicle but Barrientos

Chambers County Covid-19 Testing and Update

By Wade Thibodeaux  Chambers County conducted a drive thru testing event last Sunday, May 3, 2020 at White's Park and 97 people were tested during

the 9:00 am. to 6:00 pm. event. Results from those test should be available in 48 to 72 hours. As of Monday, May 4, 2020 Chambers County has 45 persons who have tested

positive for the Corona Virus with 37 of those patients having recovered. One person is still hospitalized and 885 have been tested. The County has recorded zero deaths

as a result of contracting the Covid-19 virus. Daily updates can be found on The Hometown Press's Facebook page.

by Wade Thibodeaux So, this week I'm going to do something different for my column. A couple of years ago I had a bartender tell me that I had a huge ego and it kind of shocked me. After all, I felt like that I lived a pretty simple life and for God's sake I drive 10 year old vehicles, still have a paper route at the age of 58, and dress very casual.....how could I have an ego. Over the years I have remembered those comments and today I thought that maybe I do have an ego because I'm always lecturing through this column. So, I decided to let somebody else talk for a week and I posted this entry on my personal Facebook page, but wanted to include it here as well. I didn't write it, but I do think that it's spot on and needs to be said. So, enjoy a week away from me and I'll be back next week with more great words of wisdom.....with or without my ego.

I talked to a man today....

I Talked with a man today, an 80+ year old man. I asked him if there was anything I can get him while this Coro-

na virus scare was gripping America.

He simply smiled, looked away and said: "Let me tell you what I need! ........... I need to believe, at some point, this country my generation fought for.............

I need to believe this nation we handed safely to our children and their children . . .

I need to know this generation will quit being a bunch of sissies . . . that they respect what they've been given . . . that they've earned what others sacrificed for."

I wasn't sure where the conversation was going or if it was going anywhere at all.

So, I sat there, quietly observing.

"You know, I was a little boy during WWII. Those were scary days. We didn't know if we were going to be speaking English, German or Japanese at the end of the war. There was no certainty, no guarantees like Americans enjoy today.

And no home went without sacrifice or loss. Every house, up and down every street, had someone in harm's way. May-

be their Daddy was a soldier, maybe their son was a sailor, maybe it was an uncle. Sometimes it was the whole damn family . . . fathers, sons, uncles . . .

Having someone, you love, sent off to war . . . it wasn't less frightening than it is today. It was scary as Hell. If anything, it was more frightening. We didn't have battlefront news. We didn't have email or cellphones. You sent them away and you hoped... you prayed. You may not hear from them for months, if ever. Sometimes a mother was getting her son's letters the same day Dad was comforting her over their child's death.

And we sacrificed. You couldn't buy things. Everything was rationed. You were only allowed so much milk per month, only so much bread, toilet paper. EVERYTHING was restricted for the war effort. And what you weren't using, what you didn't need, things you threw away, they were saved and sorted for the war effort. My generation was the original recycling movement in America.

And we had viruses back then...serious viruses. Things like polio, measles, and such.

It was nothing to walk to school and pass a house or two that was quarantined. We didn't shut down our schools.

We didn't shut down our cities. We carried on, without masks, without hand sanitiz-

er. And do you know what?

We persevered. We overcame. We didn't attack our President, we came together.

We rallied around the flag for the war. Thick or thin, we were in it to win. And we would lose more boys in an hour of combat than we lose in entire wars today."

He slowly looked away again. Maybe I saw a small tear in the corner of his eye.

Then he continued: "Today's kids don't know sacrifice. They think sacrifice is not having coverage on their phone while they freely drive across the country. Today's kids are selfish and spoiled.

In my generation, we looked out for our elders. We helped

out with single moms whose husbands were either at war or dead from war. Today's kids rush [to] the store, buying everything they can . . . no concern for anyone but themselves. It's shameful the way Americans behave these days. None of them deserve the sacrifices their grandfathers made."

"So no, I don't need anything.

I appreciate your offer but, I know I've been through worse things than this virus. But maybe I should be asking you, what can I do to help you? Do you have enough pop to get through this, enough steak? Will you be able to survive with 113 channels on your TV?"

I smiled, fighting back a tear of my own . . . now humbled by a man in his 80's, all I could do was thank him for the history lesson, leave my number for an emergency, and leave with my ego firmly tucked in my rear...

I talked to a man today. A REAL man. An American man from an era long gone and forgotten.

We will never understand the sacrifices. We will never fully earn their sacrifices. But we should work harder to learn about them . . . learn from them . . . . . to respect them.

OPPORTUNITY OVERSEAS

By Tumbleweed Smith Bret Cali had to close his store and café in Bend because he was getting too many customers. Sound strange?

Well, we are living in a strange time. It happened right after spring break when Bret was busy taking care of a big influx of tourists who had come for a few days’ rest at his place and at the Colorado Bend State Park just down the road. His neighbors in San Saba County asked him to shut down because they feared some of those visitors might be carrying the virus and bringing it in his store and café. Bret is still on the premises doing some updating, but his business is temporarily closed.

Bret can roll with the tide.

He has done it many times before. He is a man of many experiences in many places including Alaska where he worked for a company that fished for salmon. He has had a variety of jobs, from a hospital DJ playing tunes for patients to being a show producer and entertainer. He can also marry people. “I charge extra if I have to put on a button shirt,” says Bret, who has managed to avoid marriage for himself.

He lived in London a couple

of years. One day he saw an old beat-up truck with a sign on it advertising a landscape company. That gave him an idea. He and his roommate started doing some research.

“We were in the wealthier part of London and we found this book on the English landscape and a poem by Alexander Pope so we made a flyer containing words from Pope’s poem: ‘Where you walk cool gills shall fan the glade and where you sit, trees shall crowd into a shade and everything shall flourish before your eyes.’ We listed all these vast landscaping projects that we could do, then got on our bikes and put these flyers in mailboxes. We didn’t have any postage money.

“One night we were sitting in a pub and this American lady called and said her husband was making a movie in London and they were renting a mansion from the owner who was in Greece.

The owner said they could do whatever landscaping they wanted as long as he approved it. We went by the next day and talked to her. She wanted different levels and all sorts of stuff. I had mowed yards in junior high school and

thought that qualified me to do involved landscape jobs. She asked us for a bid and said she would submit it to the owner.

She told us that she was so honored to have both owners of the company take the time to stop by. We told her we had another project in the neighborhood. Our bicycles were parked around the corner.

So we went to the library and looked at architecture books and then called all sorts of landscape companies, found one that seemed reputable, took the price they offered, added much more to it and gave her the bid. The owner in Greece said that was fine. So while this company did all the work, I just rode my bike by there occasionally to see that everything was going ok. We called our company Arcadia Urban Woodlands.” Bret got a good job offer in the states and gave up his landscape business. www.tumbleweesmith.com

Nineteen individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Sunday, April 26 2020 and Saturday, May 2. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been

magistrated and formally informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not

everyone charged with a crime is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals

were arrested on outstanding warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Evelyn Standley Turning 98 (contd)

around 1985 and what an honor it was. Even though I worked with Evelyn I didn't know her as intimately as many of you have and much of what I will share here comes from her friend and cousin, Necil Kelley; former bus barn boss, Monroe Kruezer; daughter, Davonna; and niece, Linda.

After graduation from college Evelyn secured a job with Anahuac ISD as director of the Food Services Department and drove a school bus for 42 1/2 years beginning in 1945. In the summer when school was out you could find her working side by side with her husband on their 40-foot shrimp boat.

Monroe said when Evelyn started driving for the school district she drove a 9-panel wagon, keep this under your hat, I have it on good authority she did not have a driver's license when she began driving.

In the winter when it was freezing Evelyn would drain the radiator when she finished her evening run and store the water in the house to prevent it from freezing and busting the radiator. In the morning she would return it to the radiator and place a hand-cut piece of cardboard over the front of the radiator to keep the frigid air from freezing the water on her long trip to Anahuac. He also said the road leading

out of Smith Point was in pretty poor condition in the early days and when it rained it was safer to drive in the pastures than on the treacherous road.

When circumstances demanded a safer route Evelyn would leave the road and hop onto private property, the owners of said property will remain nameless!

She would choose her route through the pastures carefully heading from knoll to knoll and when the road became safer to navigte she would exit the pasture. I've driven the Smith Point route before and it's a long one, but it was much longer back in Evelyn's day. When Evelyn reached the 'Y' at FM 1985 and FM 562 her route took her left down to Oyster Bayou before she could return to Smith Point. She had a couple of family members, who will also remain nameless, who did not relish that extra travel time on the bus. They would inevitably (and purposefully I might add) get into a fight before the turnoff and Evelyn would put them off the bus at the 'Y'. Although they walked the remainder of the trip home they always managed to beat Evelyn there.

When Evelyn finally made the decision to retire from the school district in 1988 she certainly didn't retire from life. She has continued through the

years volunteering her services wherever she sees a need. She was born to work and work she has. Never one to sit back and wait to be asked, she has always assessed the situation, rolled up her sleeves, and jumped right in. Necil Kelley said Evelyn worked faithfully and diligently keeping the lawns and flower beds of the Smith Point Baptist Church manicured to perfection. She pulled every weed on her hands and knees, not stopping until every last one was gone and mowed the lawn with a push mower until not too long ago when her strength began to fail.

Evelyn's honesty and loyalty is above reproach, blessed with a keen mind she has always been the perfect choice to keep the books for many organizations over the years. Necil said Evelyn would not rest until the books balanced, even if she was off just a penny she would look diligently until she found it. Sad to say, they don't make too many like her any more. Here's just a short summary of the many hats she has worn in the community over the years: Smith Point Baptist Church treasurer from 1962 to the present.

Smith Point Baptist Church Secretary from 1962 until a few years ago, stopped because of

hearing loss.

Smith Point Fire Department Founder and Volunteer since its inception in 1976.

Smith Point Volunteer Fire Department secretary for 40 years.

Smith Point Volunteer Fire Department treasurer for 30 years.

Smith Point Volunteer Fire Department Emergency Care Assistant.

County Wide Fire Department secretary/ treasurer for 30 years.

United Daughters of the Confederacy vicepresident for 2 years.

Texas State School Food Services Association secretary for 2 years.

Chambers County 4H Horse Club Leadership Team from 1972-1975.

If there is anything Evelyn loves more than working hard it is her family.

Evelyn loves deeply and tenderly with everything within her and truly enjoys her family.

I'm sure they can share many examples of that love, but what touched me was the love and devotion Evelyn has for her baby brother, Charles Jesse 'Tootie' Stephenson.

Evelyn drove to Tootie's every day and cooked and cleaned for him up until three weeks ago when she finally had to hang up her car keys due to failing eyesight.

I imagine the pain of that decision was felt by them both. Evelyn has one other living sibling,

Eula Mae Dreyer of Port Aransas who is just 3 short years younger than Evelyn.

Evelyn has a great love of travel and that has been one area she has indulged herself.

I believe she has visited 9 different countries, a few of which are: Hawaii, Greece, Mexico, Italy (Rome), The Holy Land, and one very special trip she took along with Necil in 2004 to Norway. They traveled to the birthplace of their grandfather, Karl Mathais Neilsen in Arendal, Norway and were able to visit the Church where he was baptized as well as the resting place of ancestors long gone.

On every trip Evelyn kept such explicit diaries that one could actually experience every aspect of the trip through her literary skill.

Speaking of literary skill, Evelyn always wanted to write a book, but couldn't quite seem to find the time, I think you can see why! She did write several short stories.

Evelyn has always been a great supporter of the Chambers County Museum at Wallisville and has made many significant contributions of both artifacts and information. Her lengthy life has made her an invaluable resource; she has lived through the Great Depression, World War II, Korean War,

Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, and the wars in the Middle East and she has seen the vast array of inventions that have catapulted us into the current mind boggling age of technology.

Never one to be left behind Evelyn has kept up with the times, but I can't help but think she would be perfectly happy nowadays to sit on her porch with a tall glass of sweet tea and listen to 'Waltz Across Texas' by the old Texas Troubadour, Ernest Tubb. By golly, I wouldn't mind joining her! We value Evelyn's vast historical knowledge and commitment to its preservation, as well as her friendship and support through the years.

How do you sum up such a woman as Evelyn Standley? God not only blessed her pint-sized frame with physical strength but also strength of character and a beautiful soul. Her zest for life and love for mankind has helped her navigate through the ups and downs, joys and sorrows, and gains and losses of life and she's done it with a twinkle in her eye, a skip in her step, and a song in her heart.

She is the epitome of integrity and good moral aptitude and this world is a better place because she is in it! You are greatly loved, Evelyn. Happy 98th Birthday!

My mother now lives in an assisted living in Longview, TX. We drive there and back in a day to see her. During this Covid-19 quarantine she sits inside by the window. We sit across from her on the outside and talk on the phone. Without telling her, our son’s families have taken turns going with us to see her. One of our grandchildren always leads us a prayer before we leave. Mother takes a lot of meds these days, but no medicine ever puts a brighter “light” in her eyes than those visits. “"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12) Danny R. Dad moved up from the oilfields in south Texas to a management position and they settled in garden oaks, in Houston. He retired and they moved to their bay home in Smith Point and later to Anahuac where they spent over25 additional years together.

They were children of the “greatest generation” living through the depression and world war II with the hardships that built character, which included thankfulness for what you have. And they paid it forward.

We were so fortunate to have them as parents. They surrounded us with the things in life that are truly meaningful, like family, friends, faith, integrity, helping others, and most of all love. Wherever they were they were active in leadership roles in the Methodist church and in volunteer work for the community. Can we talk about a taboo subject??? One that too many are still afraid to discuss? Mental Health?

Yep, going to just put that out here.

This area has seen its share of mentally challenging aspects. Combine this Coronavirus with it, and many of us, myself included, well...........we just are not ourselves. And thats ok.

But the thing that struck me this week, wasnt the normal stresses. It was the story of the ER doctor in New York, 49 years old.

Committed Suicide. Lots

of questions as to what lead to it. She had zero history of mental illness according to her family. But her downward spiral began when she caught Covid19 herself. Physically she recouperated, to return to an ER where the 7-12's she was working didnt seem like she was making a dent in the mass casualties. She became overwhelmed.

Couldnt get out of her chair. Her sister got to her and admitted her to a hospital for 11 days. She committed suicide later at the sisters home.

In an interview, the sister said, she was just so tired.

She wondered if the Covid had affected her brain, and thats not really an impossibility. Maybe it did. But what it did affect was her ability to rest. To simply sleep. She would work 12 hours, and stay for more, because a doctors calling is to help people, and she said "people are dying in the waiting room, how can I go home"? A

tragedy all around as our nation lost a great doctor.

It made me think about all of us. I dont know one person, who isn’t tired right now. And tired can be a scary thing. My daughter, who has openly struggled with some depression, reached her lowest point, because she was tired. She was in a vicious cycle of not sleeping, after losing someone very special to her. She told me after her low point, she didnt really want to die. She wanted to SLEEP. Thank God for her common sense kicking in, and making her walk in and tell her roommate "I screwed up and took way too many sleeping pills"....

She has learned when she is tired, she just stops and sleeps. And you know what? THAT IS FINE. We have got to admit, sometimes it is ok to be tired. To spend a weekend in our pajamas. To just check out, and charge our batteries. Sleep is the number one thing, to

maintaining good mental health. I dont think we are all suicidal. I do think, we are all tired. We are tired of flood damage, we are tired of quarantines, we are tired of interrupted incomes, we are tired of the political fighting, the non stop barrage of negativity, the inability Washington has to accomplish much.

Americans are TIRED. I beg of you....turn off the tv, put down the phones, and talk with your loved ones. Get some sleep.

And get up and fight again tomorrow.

Happy Sunday peeps..... please take care of your mental health, while we all fight to take care of our physical health. Dont lose sight of the fact that one..... feeds the other. You dont have to be an ER doctor, to be overwhelmed with what is happening right now. You can be anyone.

Overwhelmed is ok. Tired is ok. Rest is ok. and we will all be...........OK.

They loved to entertain and feed their friends with fish, shrimp and oysters. A testament to living a long life on fried foods and margaritas. We will miss the gumbo, and her picking out crab meat for the grandchildren.

That followed by the best homemade cobbler with fresh dew berries she helped the kids pick.

And after cleaning up after the grandchildren in the kitchen several times, announcing “the kitchen is closed!!”.

She was an avid reader and master seamstress, making clothes for us as we grew up and later for the grandkids. Together she and dad were a team, making crafts out of almost thin air for the benefit of the debt on the Methodist Center. He made them and she painted them.

If you are lucky, your parents, like ours, became your good friends after our childhood. And we shared them with our friends, who enjoyed them.

And our children loved them.

A summer month at the bay

fishing, crabbing and playing games was heaven to them.

Dad was very much the extrovert and sometimes over shadowed mother, but after he died in 2002, mother, to our surprise blossomed as a woman of her own, independent, with a strong will, but still with a gentle hand.

She was never a complainer or yielded to self-pity, but just kept on keeping on as a positive person. That eighteen years allowed us to know her better and appreciate her more.

They loved each other, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren---and the Astros. She once told me that she dreamed about dad every night after he was gone. Wow! Again, we were lucky to have them and now with all of their many friends and family, many of which have also passed, we celebrate their life.

It is an end to an era.

The kitchen is now closed.

Thank you Lord for giving them to us. Eddie and Dick We felt that it is proper to write a tribute to both in celebration of their lives, knowing that with the current virus situation an

open celebration is not possible at this time. If you care to make a contribution, please make it to a charity that is helping through the current medical crisis. They would like that.

Doris enjoyed sewing, crocheting and crafting in general. She loved her church family and singing in the choir.

She is survived by her sons, Wayne DeYoung and his wife, Janet and Kenneth DeYoung and his wife, Marianne; grandsons, James Earl DeYoung; Eric Wayne DeYoung; Derrick Glenn DeYoung; Michael Wayne DeYoung and his wife, Brandi; three greatgrandchildren; sister, Nola Manuel of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and brother, Arthur Myers, Jr., of Kountze; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Earl DeYoung; parents; three sisters; and three brothers.

A family graveside service for Mrs. DeYoung will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Winnie, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

"Howdy Grandmother!"

On April 28 our mother, Mae Hillyer (Mae Mae), passed away at the age of 102+ and fell into the arms of our father, Oscar (Poppy) after 85 years of marriage.

She was raised in Beaumont and he lived in Sour Lake. They met at a high school football game where she was a cheerleader.

She captivated him and a year later they were married. A fairy tale with a storybook ending.

A story tells of a Texas Ranger arriving at a function in full Ranger regalia – boots, starched khakis, starched white shirt, black necktie, a wide-brimmed western hat and the traditional silver Texas Ranger badge.

On his hip was a semiautomatic pistol.

A lady walked up to the Ranger looking at his pistol, and asked in a mocking tone, “I see you are armed; are you expecting trouble?”

His respectful reply was, “No Ma’am; if I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.”

That’s a professional opinion of a good selfdefense weapon. But most folks don’t want to lug a long gun around everywhere they go. And shells for larger gauges add weight.

Henry Arms may have just introduced the ultimate firearm for personal selfprotection, though – a short barreled, semi-pistolgripped, .410-gauge, five shell magazine, leveraction shotgun. The .410 round has a mild enough recoil to permit being hand-held, using both hands. The light .410 shells help out, weightwise, too.

aggressors, too. I pray I will never be confronted with that situation, but I also pray that I will be prepared if it does. This scatter-gun would be a trustworthy companion.

We headed to a ranch to test it with the owner’s permission. We started with #8 shot for familiarization.

It’s very comfortable to shoot resting against your hip. My wife agreed. The little gun slid backwards a couple inches with each shot. The muzzle didn’t jump at all. Vicky shot a little high on the paper with it, but her shots would have required serious maintenance on someone with evil intent.

We only had a couple of empty plastic milk jugs, so that test was abbreviated. The number 4 shot destroyed the jugs of water and looked like it penetrated out the back side. But I learned that shooting into a fresh north wind at a gallon milk jug full of water from 25- feet away is a sure way to get your glasses washed. And it certainly looked lethal.

Buckshot wasn’t available, but ought to handle deer, small hogs and all species of predators, if needed.

Bird shot is plenty for snakes.

Its 26.4-inch length rides well with the axe handle wedged between the driver’s seat of my truck and the console. I’ll add a small holster on the drive shaft cover to keep the muzzle from sliding around. Then we’ll be ready to ride at first light.

The little shotgun’s fairly heavy (5.75 lbs.) but illustrates the Henry slogan: “Made in America or Not Made at All!” It’s substantial.

On April 28, 2020, Entergy Texas, Inc. (“ETI” or “the Company”) and East Texas Electric Cooperative, Inc. (“ETEC”) filed a Joint Application with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (“PUCT” or “Commission”) requesting to amend ETI’s certificate of convenience and necessity (“CCN”) in connection with ETI’s acquisition of the Hardin County Peaking Facility (“Hardin Facility”) from ETEC pursuant to Public Utility Regulatory Act (“PURA”) §§ 37.056 and 39.452(j), including associated assets and common facilities, and authorization to further amend ETI’s CCN to reflect a sale of a partial interest (75 megawatts (“MW”)) in the Montgomery County Power Station (“MCPS”) to ETEC (together, “the Transactions”) pursuant to PURA § 37.154. The Joint Application also seeks a Commission determination that the purchase of the Hardin Facility from ETEC is consistent with the public interest pursuant to PURA § 14.101, as well as a determination that the full acquisition cost, including transaction costs, of the Hardin Facility is recoverable invested capital for ratemaking purposes pursuant to PURA § 37.058(c). However, ETI is not seeking a change in rates as part of this proceeding.

The Transactions are interdependent in that one may not occur without the other. The Transactions are expected to close in mid-2021. The Transactions will provide a number of benefits to ETI, ETEC, and their customers, including generation resource portfolio diversification and the addition of peaking and reserve generation capacity for ETI and base load and core-load following capacity for ETEC. The agreed purchase price for the Hardin Facility is the net book value of that asset at the time of closing, which is currently estimated to be $36.0 million. In addition, ETI expects to incur transaction costs of $2.7 million and has allocated a $5.3 million contingency for unidentified costs. The agreed sale price for the partial interest in MCPS is currently estimated to be $71.1 million.

If the PUCT adopts the 45-day intervention deadline proposed in the Joint Application, the deadline to intervene will be June 12, 2020, and a letter requesting intervention should be received by the PUCT, at its address provided below, by that date. A prehearing conference is expected to be held in Austin, Texas in the near future. Cowboy Trio Starts Royalty I.D. Business

Cowboys have been doing a variety of things to stay busy during the COVID-19 quarantine.

Some are working in factories, others running food trailers, and some are doing construction.

Tie-down ropers Cory Solomon, Catfish Brown and King Pickett started a business – Royalty I.D. Royalty I.D. is a motivational influencer platform designed to promote positivity to all who come in contact with the team and company.

“One of the things we have already done is a 21-day workout for fitness with all types of workouts,” said Solomon, a six-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2011-12 and 2015-

18). “We are trying to take rodeo to that next platform like the NBA, NFL and NASCAR. We have personal trainers, and we did workouts that those guys do. With Royalty I.D., your I.D. is your identification. People come from different backgrounds and have different struggles, and that means you write your royalty, it is who you are.

I chose to get Catfish and King together with me in this company, and we all share our story.

"I feel like the rodeo world is so divided, and I feel like if kids see three guys like Catfish, King and me sticking together, it will help more kids push each other to be better together on that next level.”

To get to a professional level in anything – even building a successful business or career – there's a certain amount of discipline, dedication and commitment that forms the mindset to succeed at the top. Shad Mayfield was on a heater on the PRCA trail like never seen before.

Then, in the middle of March, the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic put rodeos on hold.

Mayfield did take a minute to touch base with fans late last week via video.

“I want to let everybody know that we are thankful for them helping us out in this tough time, all the health care workers and

first responders,” he said.

“I’ve just been roping every day trying to get better in this off time.”

Mayfield is leading the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $130,701.

His biggest win came at The American (March 8) when he left Arlington, Texas, with $603,000 – of which $53,000 counted toward the world standings.

On Feb. 22, the 19-yearold, Clovis, N.M., cowboy

clocked a 6.9-second run in the finals to win the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.

Mayfield earned $15,000 for his last run and earned $24,500 to claim the coveted San Antonio crown in his second attempt. Mayfield made his debut at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2019 and finished 12th in the world standings.
