A joint program between the Texas Cultural Trust and the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA), Texas Young Masters awards scholarship grants to deserving young artists in music, theatre, dance, visual arts, literary arts, and other artistic disciplines. The Trust celebrates a new class of Young Masters every biennium at an awards show celebrating the drive and talent of fifteen 8th through 11th grade students. Each student receives a $10,000 scholarship grant, over two years, to further their studies in their chosen field. Texas Young Masters helps our state’s rising stars realize their potential as the next generation of leading visionaries in the arts.

Lindsey Kim Allen, 11th Grade Music

indsey Kim (Music-Violin), from Allen, is a junior at Allen High School. She started violin at age six and

currently studies with Lucas Aleman. She has been a member of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra for four years and currently serves as the orchestra concertmaster. Lindsey was selected to be the concertmaster

of the Texas Music Educators Association’s All-State Symphony Orchestra in 2021 and has won numerous other recognitions. Her piano trio was invited to perform with professional orchestras at various art centers in the DFW area. Lindsey plans to use her Young Masters award to study at Tanglewood Institute.

Bryant Li Katy, 11th Grade Music

ryant Li (Music-Piano) is an 11th grader at Seven Lakes High School in Katy. He currently studies

with John Weems and Nancy Weems, and has won numerous awards such as Music Teachers National Association Junior Piano National 2nd Place, 2022 Juanita Miller Concerto Competition Grand Prize Winner, Tex-

as Music Teachers Association Piano Performance Winner, and more. Bryant was selected to participate in the Cliburn Junior Piano Festival and the Morningside Music Bridge Festival and has performed with several symphonies. He plans to use his Young Masters award to study at the Oberlin Piano Festival and the Vivace Music Festival.

Victoria Martinez Pharr, 10th Grade Musical Theatre

ictoria Martinez (Musical Theater) is a 10th grade student at McAllen High School in

McAllen. She performed in her first musical at the age of four, and has participated in theater ever since, performing in several leading roles. Victoria is currently studying with Jason Barrera at McAllen

High School. Since 2018, she has participated in University Interscholastic League theater competitions, choir, and musicals at her school. Long-term plans include studying theater in college and leading a successful career in performance. Victoria plans to use her Young Masters award to study at Ithaca College Summer High School Theatre Intensive.

Suhaas Patil Austin, 11th Grade Music

uhaas Patil (Music-Violin) is an 11th grader from Austin, attending Westwood High School. He

has been studying violin under Kristi Manno at the Bluebonnet Suzuki Studio for eleven years. Suhaas has played with the Austin Youth Orchestra since the first grade and has participated as a first violinist in

the Texas Music Educators Association’s All-State Symphony Orchestra. This summer, he will perform as a member of the National Youth Orchestra on its Europe tour. Suhaas plans to use his Young Masters award for advanced study with violin teachers and for participating in the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America.

Gabi Wager Saldívar Houston, 11th Grade Musical Theatre

abi Wager Saldívar (Musical Theater) is a homeschooled 11th grader from Houston. He is

a student at HITS Theatre, the Theatre Under the Stars Humphreys School of Musical Theatre, and the vocal studio of Jack Beetle. Gabi has performed in over 30 productions in the last decade, in venues

across the Houston area, including Miller Outdoor Theatre. His future plans include studying musical theater and playwriting in college, and working on Broadway as a performer, playwright, and perhaps as a director. Gabi plans to use his Young Masters award to attend NEXUS at Texas State Musical Theatre Pre-College Intensive.

Danielle Yoon Frisco, 10th Grade Music

anielle Yoon (Music-Cello) is a 10th grader at Independence High School in Frisco. Currently study-

ing under Ko Iwasaki, Danielle is associate principal of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, and co-president of Chamber Music International Youth Ambassadors. She has received awards from numerous competitions

such as the Music Teachers National Association, the Juanita Miller Concerto Competition, and the National Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Music Institute Solo Competition. A 2022 YoungArts award recipient, Danielle will spend the summer as a member of the National Youth Orchestra. Danielle will use her Young Masters award to study at the Encore Chamber Music Institute Summer Academy.

Ray Zhang Helotes, 11th Grade Music

ay Zhang (Music-Viola) is in the 11th grade at Brandeis High School in San Antonio. He

studies with Emily Freudigman. Ray has played in ensembles such as the National Youth Orchestra 2 in 2021 and the Texas Music Educators Association’s All-State Symphony Orchestra in 2020, 2021, and

2022. He is the principal viola player for the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio and holds a leadership role in his school orchestra class. Ray will use his Young Masters Award to study at the Encore Chamber Music Institute Summer Academy and play in the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America.

Natalie Hampton, Houston, 11th Grade, Literary Arts

atalie Hampton (Literary Arts) is an 11th grader in the Creative Writing Depart-

ment at Houston’s Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. She is a 2022 YoungArts Finalist in Creative Nonfiction and a Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Gold Medal-

ist. Natalie has honed her craft at the Sewanee Young Writers’ Conference and the Ellipsis Writing Program. During summer 2021, she studied poetry through the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio. Natalie plans to use her Young Masters award to study at the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio in the general creative non-fiction track, where she will explore fiction, poetry, and personal essay writing.

Blue Perdue Dallas, 10th Grade Visual Arts

lue Perdue (Visual Arts) is a 10th grader attending the Booker T. Washington High School for the

Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. Prior to high school, they received studio art instruction at the Dallas Museum of Art, Oil and Cotton, and the University of Texas-Austin’s summer intensive. Blue’s areas of study

include drawing, digital media, 3D design, printmaking, painting, and ceramics. A member of the Booker T. Washington HSPVA National Arts Honor Society, Blue plans to use the Young Masters grant to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Early College Program Summer Institute.

Zariyah Perry Dallas, 11th Grade Media Arts

ariyah Perry (Media Arts-Film), raised in Dallas, has studied acting, dance, art, and film for the bet-

ter part of her life. Her media arts experience includes filmmaking, editing, and producing. She is currently a junior at the prestigious Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, in the

Theatre Arts Conservatory. Zariyah has recently placed in various film festivals for her film, I AM NOT THE NORM. A 2022 YoungArts honorable mention recipient, Zariyah will use her Young Masters award to study film at the University of California Los Angeles Film & Television Summer Institute.

Tori Han Plano, 11th Grade Dance

ori Han (Dance) is an 11th grade student at iUniversity Prep. She started dancing when she was

eight years old, and currently dances at Elite Classical Coaching in Frisco under Brian Stevens and Director Catherine Livengood Lewellen. In the past year, she has placed in the top three at the American Dance Compe-

tition/International Ballet Competition and Youth American Grand Prix, and was invited to their international finals where she will perform in April 2022. Tori will use her Young Masters award to attend the Alonzo King LINES Ballet Pre-Professional Summer Program and the Juilliard Summer Dance Intensive.

Keenan Kiefer McKinney, 10th Grade Dance

eenan Kiefer (Dance) is a sophomore at McKinney High School. He trains with Academy of Dance

Arts in Allen and is a third-year featured soloist with Dallas Repertoire Ballet. His awards include 2022 YoungArts Honorable Mention in Dance/Choreography, 2021 Outstanding Teen Male Dancer Finalist at the New

York City Dance Alliance Nationals in Phoenix, 2019 Junior Male Dancer of the Year for The Streetz Dance, 2018 Youth American Grand Prix International Finalist, and 2016 Junior Male Dancer of the Year for Hollywood Vibe, among others. Keenan will use his Young Masters award for the Juilliard Summer Dance Intensive in New York.

Aarushi Lakhi Pearland, 11th Grade Dance

arushi Lakhi (Classical Indian Dance), is an 11th grader at Glenda Dawson High School in

Pearland. She studies Bharatanatyam at the Silambam Houston Dance Academy with Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan. Aarushi is also pursuing advanced training virtually under Kalamamani Priya Murle in India and has

recently begun learning Kathak classical Indian dance from Mrs. Kalpana Subbarao. She was chosen to be part of YUVA 2021, a cohort of ten emerging artists across North America who choreographed a collaborative Indian classical dance performance. Aarushi hopes to use her Young Masters award to study under the legendary professor Sudharani Ragupathy in Chennai, India.

Aubri Parker Frisco, 9th Grade Dance

ubri Parker (Dance-Ballet) is a 9th grade student at iUniversity Prep. She is currently training in

the Professional Training Program at Cary Ballet Conservatory in North Carolina under directors Mariaelena Ruiz and Heather Iler. Aubri has won top awards at numerous competitions, including the Youth American

Grand Prix Hope awards, the Universal Ballet Competition Aspire award, and the American Dance Competition/International Ballet Competition Primary Grand Prix award. She plans to use her Young Masters award to attend the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Summer Intensive in Canada, which will support her training for a professional career in ballet.

Abigail Victoria Weber Savannah, 10th Grade Dance

bigail Victoria Weber (Dance) is in her 10th grade year at the Dallas Conservatory academic

program in Frisco. She currently studies classical ballet with Jacqueline Porter and the faculty of the Dallas Conservatory. Abigail has choreographed several pieces for herself and others. This year at Youth America

Grand Prix Dallas, she was named Outstanding Choreographer and 1st place senior contemporary soloist with her self-choreographed piece. Abigail’s future goals include a career in commercial dance or on Broadway. She plans to use her Young Masters award to study at the Juilliard Summer Dance Intensive in New York City.

ary Altman Yturria was born on May 9, 1925, in York, Alabama. She graduated from the Sophie Wright School for Girls in New Orleans and attended Louisiana State University before joining Pan Am Airlines in 1944 to aid in the war effort. She moved to Brownsville, where she met and married local rancher and banker Frank D. Yturria. Through the years, Mrs. Yturria has devoted her time and energy to supporting and promoting a wide range of philanthropic and charitable causes, most notably in the fields of conservation and historic preservation. She is the founder of the Historic Brownsville Museum, a founding board member of Los Caminos del Rio, a founding member of the Gulf of Mexico Foundation and has served on the board of the Texas Audubon Society, the Adult Literacy Organization, The Brownsville Community Foundation, and The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art. She has founded, served on, or chaired many other boards and committees, receiving numerous honors, including the Ruth Lester Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Historical Commission and the Texas State Teachers Association’s Humanitarian Award and awards from the State of Texas. An Elementary School was named in honor of Mary and her husband, and July 4 of each year has been designated Mary Yturria Day in Brownsville by the Texas Senate. Mary is a beloved and respected member of her community. She is noted for her warmth, her wit, and her wise counsel, and she inspires those around her by her enthusiasm for giving to her community.
