President’s Message

Greetings

I hope this finds everyone doing well. The Regional Schools In-Person Training kicked off in Amarillo the first week of April, and I must say, it felt good to get out. Ruben, Bruce, and the entire board made everyone feel welcome, and they made things happen to provide an excellent training event. Good job Panhandle Region.

“You bring about what you think about.” How about this analogy – efforts and rewards are much like gardening. Everyone likes good fresh vegetables. Few put forth the effort needed to have a successful garden. What happens if all you do is go out and throw seeds on the ground and hope for the best? What happens when you want to obtain a water or wastewater license, and all you do is attend class with no additional effort?

To get the most out of a garden, you begin with ground preparation. You turn the soil, maybe add mulch, and water the beds. Then when the time is right, you plant the seeds by opening up the ground. Using this analogy, there should be efforts geared towards things like reading to get the most out of training. You are highlighting key points. Review chapter quizzes and write down and research items or areas you do not understand. Whatever it takes to understand the science behind all aspects of your job.

Most are excited about reaping the rewards, but how many are willing to put in the work? Is it essential to know why and how a treatment method or process works or is it acceptable to merely know you add three scoops of the product in the blue barrel to five gallons of water and let it drip over the inflow for 8 hours?

As a sophomore, Michael Jordan did not make his varsity basketball team. He went home and complained to his mother, who told him, he would need to try harder and practice more. Michael developed a practice routine that eventually made him one of the greatest professional basketball players of all time. Everyone wants to be like Mike until they see what it takes to actually be like Mike.

Most strive to become the boss, but not all are willing to put in the time to know and understand all the boss does.

The boss was growing old and spent a considerable amount of time in his office, seemingly shuffling papers. Leaving the daily work needs to his staff. The city had updated all the pumps except for one station where all the raw water was routed through. One day after a thunderstorm, everything at this one location shut down. The shift foreman called the electrician, who began troubleshooting the problem. After a few hours, the electrician called the engineer for assistance.

The engineer worked with the electrician for hours before conceding the problem was somehow mechanical and called for a pump specialist. The pump specialist worked with the engineer and the electrician, but collectively they could not isolate the cause of the shutdown. After more time elapsed, the engineer said the City Manager and Mayor should be notified because surely the town would run out of water. The electrician offered that the old department boss be informed before contacting the City Manager and Mayor. When the old boss answered his phone, he was filled in on the issue and the steps taken to correct the problem. It was also suggested that the upper decision-makers should 4 Texas Water Utilities Journal | www.twua.org

be notified so they could prepare a press release. The old boss said to hold off on any more notifications and that he would come to the pump station immediately.

Upon arrival, the boss was immediately met by the others on-site, and they began telling the boss what they found and what they suspected could be causing the issue. The boss asked for a flashlight, a crescent wrench, a screwdriver, and a ¼ bolt. When he had the tools, he wandered off into the dark corners of the structure. They could hear banging, and miraculously the motors and pumps returned to life. The boss emerged, wiping his hands, and said that should get things back to normal.

With puzzled looks on their faces, the others pressed for answers as to how the boss was able to restore service when the “experts” were ready to declare an emergency and either install bypass piping or provide new motors and wiring, which was going to take days if not weeks.

Forty years ago, when this structure was built, I studied the plans and talked with the construction workers who built all the pumping structures. Often, I would bring lunch and ask questions until I thought I had used up my welcome.

The workers told me the biggest weakness in the design of this facility was the automatic electrical switchgear. These workers trained me and showed me what to do in case of failure. I have waited 40 years to apply this knowledge. And since no one bothered to accompany me or offer to assist in any way, I will leave it up to the “experts” to figure out how I fixed the problem.

Knowledge is a beautiful thing.

I pray that 2022 brings good health, blessings, prosperity, and purpose.

Father, we pray for Your mercy and ask that You guide, direct, protect, and bless TWUA and its members. Amen In West Texas, Lake Spence is sitting at 23.1 % (- 0.5 %). White River is sitting at 14.9 % (- 2.2 %). Panhandle - Lake Meredith is sitting at 33.3 % (- 0.8 %) and Greenbelt is at 15.3 % (- 0.9 %). If you want to get a complete look at current lake levels, go to waterdatafortexas.org. The drought has never left for some.

Mark your calendar for the 2022 – Arlington will be May 16th – 20th. Killeen will be June 6th – 9th. McAllen is confirmed July 11th – 14th. San Angelo will be July 25 – 28th. Ft. Stockton will be August 22nd – 25th. Longview will be October 10th – 13th.

Lubbock will be November 1st – 3rd. The links to all the fliers will be activated as soon as possible so that you may register for any region now, thereby making use of budgets more efficiently.

TWUA is excited about the TWUA Regional Schools coming up. Arlington is the next region in the rotation, and David Henshaw and the North Central Texas board would welcome your participation.

We also have the Killeen School, which is June 6th – 9th, so if you are in the Killeen area, come join Bill, Vicente, Scott, and the board for a great educational event.

The Story Goes Something Like This – Once in a college physics class, the professor asked the students, Why do you think we have brakes on our cars?

A student immediately sprang up and replied, to stop the car.

Another student replied, to reduce and better control the speed of the vehicle. Another said, to avoid collisions. Soon all the students began to offer their versions of similar answers, so the professor decided to provide another perspective.

I appreciate all of your answers, although no one has approached this question from the perspective of, what if the brakes on a car, enable us to make it run faster?

The professor continued, for a moment, let’s assume your car has no brakes, then how fast are you willing to drive your car?

The students appeared confused. They never thought this way and never looked at brakes on a vehicle from this perspective.

The professor continued, similarly, there are many such “brakes” in our lives that alter, restrict, or stop our decisions. Our parents, teachers, friends, and morals influence the directions we naturally follow and the decisions we make in life.

Should we be thankful for “Brakes” (difficult situations) in life or see them as a nuisance or hindrance to achieving our goals and dreams?

Stay Safe, and Remember – we do not need all the operators in Texas to be a member of TWUA – JUST YOU ! ! ! !

But what if we see our influencers as supporters or catalysts that enable us to take risks while ensuring that we protect ourselves. Sometimes we become so focused on our goals and dreams that we need our support structure to cause us to stop or slow down our actions and, in some cases, help us regain the required perspective.

Therefore, we need to understand that “Brakes” in our lives are not meant to push us back or restrict us; but rather to help us move forward faster than without the encouragement, guidance,

DECISION FATIGUE: HOW IT WORKS AND HOW TO BEAT IT

We all know, intuitively, that physical exhaustion can take a toll on our ability to think clearly, making even the simplest decisions seem momentous. It turns out there’s a name for that: decision fatigue. And it’s a little scarier than you might think.

It’s bad enough that decision fatigue can make it difficult to reach decisions, even about simple things. The real problem is that it can lead us to make bad decisions, researchers say.

“Decision fatigue causes us to make poor decisions, because, as we reach mental exhaustion, our brains take illogical shortcuts to aid us in our decision-making,” according to experts at the Decision Lab, an applied research firm.

“These shortcuts result in less deliberate decisions.”

A shortcut can go in one of two directions. Because exhaustion tends to diminish our willpower or impulse control, we might say yes to something that we ought to decline. Or we might just say no out of hand simply because we don’t want to think about.

“Sometimes it’s just easier to say no rather than to weigh the choices and make an appropriate decision,” according to researchers at the Carson College of Business at Washington State University. “This can lead to lost opportunities. That automatic no is as bad as an impulsive yes.”

Karlie Kramer, a contributor at the Mindful Leader, suggests four ways to minimize its impact at work: Make fewer decisions. For example, use automatic bill payment whenever possible. “The more decisions you automate, the more energy you can save for important stuff [at work],” Kramer writes.

Tackle big decisions early in the day. Research has found that we make our best decisions in the morning, and our worse ones at night.

Eat right and eat often. It’s basic biology: The prefrontal cortex, the part of our brain that is key to decision-making, requires glucose, a sugar found in food.

Time-block your schedule. It’s another way to reduce the volume of decisions. “By committing ahead of time to a designated task within a specific timeframe, you’re setting priorities and eliminating the need to decide how to spend free time,” says Kramer.

In a blog post for Ladders, an executive-level career site, Taylor Tobin identifies some other symptoms of decision fatigue:

Know Your Rights Federal law entitles you to a safe workplace. Your employer must keep your workplace free of known health and safety hazards. A LIFE THAT TOUCHES OTHERS GOES ON FOREVER – author unknown.

The TWUA family lost a genuinely great guy. Jesse Britton is now in his eternal resting place after a brief illness with cancer.

Friday, April 22nd, life on earth ended for Jesse, and the good news is, one day, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, and family will once again see that smiling face. Jesse would want us all to remember – Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened – Dr. Seuss There’s a Kenny Chesney song lyric that goes something like this, “When your hourglass runs out of sand, you can’t just flip it over and start again, so don’t blink, life goes faster than you think.” The trouble is that people are trapped with the thought, I have time or when I get time, I will . . . . . (you fill in the blank).

What is on your bucket list, and more importantly, when will you get busy marking things off this list? Don’t Blink!

When asked what sets TWUA apart as an association? The short answer, TWUA is a family. Annual school, Regional schools, and District meetings are like a family reunion. There are some that you are closer to. Some that you don’t have a lot

in common with. But let some life-changing event happen and watch the operator’s rally. One of the best compliments you will receive is when a fellow operator refers to you as a brother, sister, or friend.

An important task needed to get done, and when attempting to complete this task, the options for completion were determined to be Yesterday, Someday, Any day, or Tomorrow. Yesterday was busy, and worked hard all day, so it did not happen. Someday is the column where a lot of the tasks are assigned to. Someday when I get better organized. Someday when I get time. Any day might work, but life happens, although this option provides more flexibility. Tomorrow gets assigned more than its share of the tasks, but what if tomorrow never comes?

Time is one luxury that is promised to no one. Tell those you care about; you love them. Be thankful and laugh often.
