President’s Message
President’s Thoughts by Mike Norris
Greetings, I hope this finds you all doing well. As my “Presidential Theme,” I have chosen the concept of “You bring about what you think about.” And the importance of a positive attitude and helping yourself achieve goals and dreams. Thomas Jefferson is credited with saying, “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goals; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” Michael Jordan – “My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength.” How is this applicable in our industry? Let’s assume you are challenging a state exam. You have asked co-workers about the difficulty of the exam, and the consensus opinion is that the exam was both challenging and difficult. That seed of doubt and uncertainty is planted in your mind, and already you are preparing to just squeak by or for your retest. Perhaps the question you should have asked your co-workers is, how much did you prepare? How much personal effort did you give? What was your routine for preparation? What type of study material did you use? True story – An operator was preparing for the A exam. He studied some, reviewed questions at the end of chapters in several manuals, and planned on spending the evening before the exam cramming and studying. This operator went to a sports bar/restaurant for dinner, where he bumped into an old friend. One drink leads to another and another. Before he knew it, the bar was announcing “last call,” and they were too deep into a great buzz, so they had one more for the road. He walked back to the hotel, and as soon as he lay across the bed, he went to sleep. Luckily, he had set the alarm on his phone. Powering through a substantial hangover, he went to challenge the exam. How do you think this operator performed on the state exam? Let’s just say he was successful on his retest. Perhaps you are being considered for a promotion. Your attitude can be either, what can I do to prepare for the challenges of the promotion, or they will more than likely give it to someone else. You can seek out another supervisor who, like you, worked their way up through the ranks and seek advice. You can assume you will be overlooked, and your work performance can suffer. You can develop a sour attitude. You can make the working environment difficult. You become frustrated and leave the industry. Which road will you choose? What if life is about choices? What if we travel down a road, and every major decision is like a fork in the road? Either path is available, and either path has a different reality. We choose the left path (as it relates to exams), and because we decided not to study and prepare, we find the exams and job advancements a struggle. If we choose the right path at the fork, we have a good attitude. We develop a good work ethic. We truly study and prepare for the exams. We seek a mentor. We put forth the necessary personal effort in all our challenges. We do not allow anyone to outwork us. We become, by industry standards, “successfully.” Which path have you chosen? Albert Einstein – “Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.” Don’t forget that live in-person Regional Training events begin in Amarillo on April 4th, 2022. I pray that 2022 brings you good health, blessings, prosperity, and purpose. TWUA President Mike Norris 4 Texas Water Utilities Journal | www.twua.org

The Story Goes Something Like This –
Monty Roberts grew up around horses in California. His father was a horse trainer, and Monty was riding before he learned to walk. During the heyday of Western Movies and as a child, Monty rode horses in movies, often as a stunt double for child actors. He later got into rodeos and horse shows and earned a reputation as a great horseman.
Roberts always dreamed of being a horse trainer himself, March 2022
Central Office News
and with a wife and a couple of kids to support, he figured it was time to get serious, so he went into the business. In spite of his reputation as a great rider, Roberts was an inexperienced trainer and had trouble getting clients. He had only four horses to train, which wasn’t bringing in nearly enough money to support his family.
Roberts wasn’t sure what he was going to do when an opportunity was presented to work as an apprentice with Don Dodge, one of the most well-known and well-respected trainers in the area. He was told to bring two of his horses with him.
After ten weeks, the apprenticeship ended, and Roberts met with Dodge. One of the horses he had brought with him was named Panama Buck. Dodge told Roberts that when he got home, he should call up the horse’s owner, Lawson Williams, and tell him that he was wasting his money having Roberts train the horse because the horse was never going to amount to anything.
Roberts was understandably reluctant to do this, as that would eliminate a quarter of his already meager income. When he asked Dodge why he should do this, Dodge responded that the most important thing he could do was always tell owners the truth about their horses, and if he did this, he would soon get more than enough business to replace the loss.
be about the only honest trainer I ever heard of. Well, we know that Panama Buck horse of his wasn’t any good, and I just wanted to test you. I have this horse I want to send to you; it’s called My Blue Heaven.”
From that point on, things started to turn around for Roberts. He gained a reputation as not only a great trainer but an honest one, and soon he had more than enough horses to train. Eventually, he would even have the opportunity to train horses for the Queen of England. And it all started with following some wise advice from a mentor to always be honest, even when the price is high. From the book Barefoot to Billionaire.
How has your integrity been tested? When was the last time you were asked to make a choice where doing the right thing would cost you more than you wanted to pay? Are you prepared to make the right choices when your test comes?
Stay Safe, and Remember – we do not need all the operators in Texas to be a member of TWUA – JUST YOU ! ! ! !
Roberts went home and did as instructed, but Williams didn’t take the news well. He responded by berating Roberts, screaming, “You useless son of a gun, you wouldn’t know a good horse if it leaped up between your legs. That’s the last horse you’ll ever get from me!”
Several days later, Roberts’ phone rang. A voice on the other end said, “Hello, Mr. Gray here, Joe Gray.” He went on, “I was having lunch with Mr. Williams yesterday. You no doubt recall that he was complaining about you. But from what I took from the conversation; you must March 2022

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) is an essential requirement to OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard. They are one of the most important documents a facility should have. They address the properties of each chemical that workers use, transport, and handle onsite, including ones that are utilized only occasionally. SDSs have a standardized, 16-section format that relays crucial information about a chemical. You’ll quickly and easily be able to find hazard classification, actions to take during accidental spills or releases, personal protective measures, precautions for handling, transporting, and storing the product safely, and more. SDSs are generated by the supplier (either the manufacturer, importer, or distributor) of a chemical. The format must adhere to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). Safety Data Sheets used to be known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), until OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard formally aligned with GHS in 2012. As of June 1, 2015, all employers in the United States are required to have their labeling and communication programs updated to correspond with GHS standards. All MSDSs should have been replaced with the SDS uniform format. It is important to comply with these regulations, as chemical safety in the workplace relies on communication and consistency. Chemicals have a wide range of toxicity; workers need to understand whether the products they’re handling may cause harm and what to do if an emergency occurs. The employer is responsible for training workers, keeping SDSs in an accessible location, and implementing a safety program that includes handling and storing toxic substances.
The Transition: MSDS to SDS Although OSHA was established as an agency in 1970, the first requirement to provide chemical hazard information to employees wasn’t implemented until 1994. In the 1990s, the “Right to Know” concept became very important to the agency, as it had become clear that many workers were exposed to occupational 8 Texas Water Utilities Journal | www.twua.org
risks that they had no knowledge of. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) became one of the original requirements under OSHA’s Right to Know rules. Starting in 1994, facilities had to have these sheets, which provided information about every chemical used during the facility’s operations. While MSDSs were a big step forward for chemical safety, the guidelines for both the format and enforcement of this information were loosely defined. OSHA found that a chemical’s datasheet from two different facilities could look entirely different. There was often incomplete information, and what information there wasn’t standardized; for example, one facility would require their workers to don specific PPE before handling a chemical, while another facility didn’t require PPE for the chemical at all. Many chemically-related injuries could have been prevented if the sheets contained consistent information. As OSHA aligned with GHS in 2012, they updated their chemical safety and communications standards. MSDS became SDS, and these informational sheets became fully standardized internationally. Although the MSDS format is now outdated, it did achieve the original goal of keeping workers more informed and provided a basis for the formation of Safety Data Sheets.
Who is Responsible for SDSs in the Workplace? OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard establishes two requirements for the generation and maintenance of Safety Data Sheets: • Manufacturers, importers, and distributors of chemicals must prepare the Safety Data Sheet sent to customers. Each kind of chemical gets its own specific SDS, with every section of information filled out to a minimum as detailed in 29 CFR 1910.1200, Appendix D. This ensures it is classified correctly, and that hazards are effectively March 2022
Safety News communicated to the facility or employer who receives the chemical. Manufacturers, importers, and distributors are also responsible for updating SDSs anytime new developments or changes occur for the classification of a certain chemical.
as you cannot simply rely on using Google or any other type of search engine to find accurate SDSs.
• Employers must make the SDSs they receive easily accessible for workers and are responsible for maintaining the stock. The chemical safety training that employers are required to provide must include interpreting and using SDSs. Instruction on hazardous substance exposure is difficult without the data sheet to use as a starting point, so employers should request SDSs if they do not have an adequate supply.
By now, all facilities in the US should have upgraded to the SDS format for every chemical that they use. Businesses that are audited by OSHA and found to have missing or inadequate chemical information may be cited with a violation. Employees need to be fully aware of the risks that are involved with their daily operations, and they should also have an understanding of the steps they can take to improve their own safety as they handle chemicals.
SDSs must be readily accessible for reference when employees have questions or need to ensure they are taking the proper precautions as they come into contact with dangerous substances. The sheets should be located in the actual work area, and kept either physically in a binder or electronically on an accessible computer. Many manufacturers send a paper copy of the SDS with the chemical order. Keeping track of this copy is essential,

Chemical Safety in the Workplace
Safety Data Sheets are integral to hazard communications and chemical safety; by having them on hand, SDSs play an essential role in reducing the risk of a chemical accident and help minimize the impact if an accident does occur. S

What is Good Customer Service? By Indeed Editorial Excellent customer service is part of any organization’s essential building blocks. Possessing good customer service skills may help you thrive in various occupations and careers, including sales, consulting, retail, food and beverage, public service, advertising, and marketing. Building good relationships with individuals is part of providing excellent customer service. In this article, we’ll discuss good customer service and how to provide it.
4.
Listen To Your Customers The art of listening is a straightforward and simple means to offer exemplary customer service. Often, customers just want to be heard and acknowledged. It is critical that you make every effort to actively listen to what they want to say. Some feel better once they have been allowed to express their feelings and are reassured that there is no immediate danger or threat.
How to provide good customer service – 5. 1.
2.
6.
Know Your Service or Product To provide exceptional service to your consumers, be well versed in all attributes of the goods or services you’re offering and responsible for. If someone calls in a concern about “dirty water,” it would be essential to know what dirty water is, what causes it, and what steps you will enact to address the concern and resolve all issues while restoring consumer confidence in the product. Follow up with the one that made the notification. Never make a promise that “you” cannot provide.

Get To Know Your Service Area and Customers Knowing your customers and anticipating their needs or concerns is essential to providing excellent customer service. If you have a section of your system that routinely reports taste and odor issues, schedule routine line flushing before you begin receiving calls. Documentation is vital in determining patterns. Report recurring events in the same area and get the supervisor and perhaps engineers to provide more permanent solutions.
Respond Promptly Another aspect of effective customer service is the promptness with which you respond. Customers valve prompt responses to their inquiries, particularly when they have time-sensitive needs. Strive to return all phone calls and emails within 24 hours for good customer service. Inform customers of the time it may take you to assist them. Contact the customer and acknowledge the concern. If possible, provide a timeline for the response. No contact implies that no one has been assigned the problem or the concern is not considered important.
3.
Thank you for bringing this concern to our attention; we pride ourselves on providing the best product and service that we can. I will be back in contact with you after I have an opportunity to act. Be sincere
Be Friendly Being courteous and amicable is one of the most essential rules underlying good customer service. Always welcome customers with a smile and be kind and respectful at all times. Pay attention to the customer’s needs and provide assistance even before they ask. If you are aware of a problem, act. Don’t wait for someone to call in a report or makes contact. It’s critical to be friendly and understanding towards your customers, even in tensed or confrontational situations.
Remember To Say Thank You
7.
Focus on Relationships A good relationship with your customers can help you maintain their support and loyalty. By demonstrating that you genuinely care about them will lead to appreciation and respect. One way to gain respect is by displaying integrity and professionalism at all times.
8.
Keep Your Promises Keeping your word and commitments to your customers demonstrate that you value them. It’s critical to remember every promise, regardless of whether it’s published on the corporate website, expressed in an online email or text, or discussed during a phone call. Be mindful that customers remember when you or your company commit to something.

Field News
Bandwidth and Training Bandwidth in this context is referring to the amount of electronic data that can be transferred from one point to another in a specific time. Bandwidth was initially expressed and measured as bits per second (bps). Today bandwidth is measured in Mbps or (Megabits per second). Some speeds even measure in Gbps (gigabits per second) and even Tbps (Terabits per second). To oversimplify this discussion, think of bandwidth as water flowing through a pipe. The larger the pipe, the more product can freely flow or be pushed. As users transition to web browser-based applications, one of the problems they must deal with is internet speed. Few things frustrate a computer user, like buffering. Buffering might occur when a user attempts to open a video file, like streaming a movie. Relevance to water and wastewater industry? Most plants have computers that are tied into a network. Some may be a stand-alone unit. Both might have remote monitoring and work applications running. Things like SCADA are used to monitor pressures, start and stop pumps and motors, etc. Then someone might say it would be great to monitor the plant access or keep an eye on the events occurring at the plant, so several high-definition security cameras are added. A pandemic event occurs, and required operator training goes from live instructor lead classroom events to computer-based training events. The operator/staff needs training, so the supervisor says, sign up Billy Bob for a 20-hour computer class, and he can use one of the desks with a computer workstation at the treatment plant. Billy Bob comes to the plant for class, and there is enough bandwidth available to access a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.), and he does all that is needed to arrange for the class. Perhaps the following morning, Billy Bob shows up, signs in, and access the training provider’s web address provided in the registration process. Shortly after that, the supervisor uses his laptop to make adjustments through SCADA. And someone pulls up at the gate, and the lead operator wants to take a closer look, so he accesses the security cameras. Another operator is preparing and submitting TCEQ reports. Poor Billy Bob now begins experiencing “Buffering,” or his screen freezes, and he either only has audio, or the electronic class stops altogether.
Bob is the only student expressing concerns about buffering or choppy video. What Billy Bob does not want to hear is, that the problem seems to be on the user’s side or end. Meaning there is not enough internet bandwidth available at the plant to support all the applications that are running and fighting for bandwidth. Some entities have IT departments and staff support. In some cases, it is not a big problem for the IT staff to dedicate more resources to the treatment plant. Small systems and individuals are left to face the internet concerns on their own. The main point of this discussion is that plants, offices, and facilities should review their internet needs and capabilities. If the internet load justifies, make plans to address the current and potential internet needs. TWUA has several steps in place to monitor attendance, participation, and comprehension, so for some allowing the worker to attend class from home could be an option? For TWUA, as long as you have a laptop with internet capabilities, a standard browser, and a telephone, you can attend class. Internet bandwidth is one of the possible reasons for buffering; you also have resource allocation on the PC, which are influenced by which programs are open and/or running in the background while trying to view the video. Programs use memory (RAM) and require processing time (CPU). If too many programs are open, each one loads into memory and requires additional memory to execute, and every process they spawn requires processor time. When the PC does not have enough memory, it will use the hard disk as temporary storage to be able to execute; this is called SWAPPING. An example of something that will slow down the perceived performance is something like the Anti-Virus Software running in the background and possibly scanning files. Multiple browser windows open at the same time can also contribute. Together with the bandwidth, all of these things will influence your experience when streaming the video. Help TWUA provide the best electronic learning experience by verifying your internet capabilities.
Billy Bob is now frustrated and calls the training provider and says he is experiencing issues. The Training Provider verifies equipment, monitors the electronic classroom, and sees Billy 28 Texas Water Utilities Journal | www.twua.org

WIPES IN PIPES
With Micro-Solve® microorganisms multiply. This reduces the grease that binds wipes together. Micro-Solve® reduces the risk of contact with disease.
Wipes when flushed and combined with other products and grease that is poured down drains, create "fatbergs". Once they enter the sewer lines, they can accumulate and cause backups, damaging the city's infrastructure.
