BRANTFORD —Police are investigating a drive-by shooting at a Magic Mushroom shop kn own as “Fun Guyz” on Murray Street, near the intersection of Chatham Street. Police report the shooting took place around 2 am, early Tuesday morning.

The call resulted in a large police response whereupon investigations discovered two bullet holes in the front window frame, plus four other impact points on the building itself.

It has been reported since December of 2024 that the store is part of a chain of Magic Mushroom outlets. Since 2023, police say there has been 120 raids on Fun Guyz shops and warehouses throughout Ontario.

At this point there are no suspects and given the hour of the shooting, it was believed to be intended to deliver a message of some kind. Police continue to investigate the incident.

Squire and his family members protested the morning raid, which snarled traffic along Chiefswood Road until the late afternoon.

Squire had called out for community support to protest the raid, saying the OPP did not have the right to be on Six Nations.

Police had remained on the property throughout the day collecting evidence.

“This is our territory,” said Squire, denying any organized crime element was at his business.

“No, we’ve got tobacco and solar panels. There’s nothing illegal about cigarettes on our territory.”

Squire then alleged that Six Nations of the Grand River Chief and Council are the ones practicing organized crime.

Around 3 p.m. that day, one of the employees from the business at 1342 Chiefswood Road, parked his red truck across the entranceway to the property in protest, blocking in dozens of OPP and Six Nations

Police officers.

He then proceeded to flatten his tires with a sharp object to make it harder to move the vehicle.

Not too long after the tow truck arrived, police arrested the man across the road from the business while standing on the soft shoulder.

A Six Nations business was raided last week amid allegations of organized crime taking place at the Chiefswood Road property, sparking community-wide debate denouncing the amount of businesses funded by non-native partners on the reserve.

Francois Cadieux, 47, from Oakville, Ont., was charged with obstructing a peace officer for blocking the entranceway with his truck.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Squire did not return follow up calls asking for more information on the fate of his business.

Turtles, rare plants may be affected by quarries project DONNA DURIC

Green ash, silver maple, Blanding turtles and snapping turtles will be among the plants and wildlife affected by the third pit digging in the Port Colborne Quarries Project.

“This area does have the potential to be impacted hydrogeologically from the quarry activities,” said Lauren Jones, wildlife and stewardship manager with Six Nations Lands and Resources, during the most recent community engagement session for the Port Colborne Quarries project.

Pre-construction investigation has found the area is home to five species of bats in areas, notable birds such as the meadowlark and grasshopper sparrow - identified as species of risk - as well as deer, muskrat, and amphibians such as bullfrogs.

Bullfrogs were observed in a pond intended to be removed, she revealed during the meeting.

Blanding turtles habitats will be removed for the project, as will the habitat for snapping turtles, she said.

Rehabilitation for the Blanding turtles will take place right away but the habitat restoration for the snapping turtle will only occur after the project’s lifespan is over, roughly between 25 and 30 years.

She said the company that owns the quarry - Rankin Construction said they will rehabilitate those issues after the aggregate has been removed.

Rare plants such as tamarack and necklace sedge have also been found in the area.

Young ash trees will also be removed, but they were heavily impacted by the emerald ash borer, said Jones.

The quarry will be turned into a lake after its lifespan is over.

On Jan. 27 this year, Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council signed a preliminary agreement for the project.

The company is proposing to extend its existing quarry, located

in the eastern part of Port Colborne, to a third pit and the extension will also be below the water table quarry.

The company plans to extract 175 acres of aggregate from the 262 acre property, with setbacks of three meters along roads and 10 meters from a nearby deciduous swamp.

The company is asking the provincial government to authorize production of just over 1.8 tonnes.

Peter Graham, consultation supervisor at Lands and Resources, said there are hundreds of aggregate operations across NANFAN treaty territory.

The agreement proposes giving Six Nations 10 cents per tonne of aggregate, totalling $4.2 million in compensation over the life of the quarry, with the stipulation the rate will be adjusted every two years for inflation.

“We are slowly assembling agreements with a number of aggregate companies. The hope is now we’re getting up to receiving hundreds

of thousands a year. We expect that that will be millions a year in the nottoo-distant future.”

Rankin Construction will continue to consult with Six Nations once the project reaches final rehabilitation and will provide Six Nations contracting and employment opportunities as part of the agreement.

However, said Graham, there’s already a workforce and procurement agreements, because the pit is already established and just being extended, so a sizeable number of opportunities aren’t expected for this one.

He said Six Nations has

been left out of consultations on quarry projects because the Ministry of Natural Resources has been willing to green light the projects without First Nations consultation.

“There was only an obligation to consult on new and existing pits as decreed by the MNR so all the hundreds of existing pits unfortunately, the province does not recognize a duty to consult.

If we say no (to this agreement), the ministry will still give them their permits. The Ministry of Natural Resources has told us they will not withhold any permit for a lack of accommodation.”

Monitors from Six Nations of the Grand River, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Haudenosaunee Development institute were on the site in 2019.

He said Rankin Construction has accepted the principle that Six Nations of the Grand River is entitled to accommodation for developments on its traditional and treaty territories.

The project reaches the end of its lifespan upon depletion of the aggregate and at that point, rehabilitation of the environment begins.

By Craig Lord Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced his new cabinet.

Here is the list of all 28 Liberal cabinet members, as well as 10 secretaries of state.

Returning members of cabinet: Anita Anand, minister of foreign affairs The MP for Oakville East in Ontario has been a mainstay of the Liberal cabinet, holding seven different roles now since 2019. She initially said she would not run again in the recent federal election but changed her mind after Carney entered the race for the Liberal leadership.

Gary Anandasangaree, minister of public safety Elected for the fourth time as the MP for Scarborough—Guildwood—Rouge Park in Ontario, Anandasangaree previously held the Crown-Indigenous relations and northern affairs portfolios. He was briefly the justice minister and attorney general in Carney's first, election-period cabinet.

François-Philippe Champagne, minister of finance and national revenue The MP for Saint-Maurice—Champlain in Quebec, he was named to the finance portfolio just before the election call. He served in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet since 2017, including as the industry minister and the minister of foreign affairs.

Sean Fraser, minister of justice, minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency The fourth term MP for Central Nova in Nova Scotia, Fraser served as both

minister of housing and minister of immigration in Justin Trudeau's cabinet.

He also planned not to run again until Carney became leader.

Chrystia Freeland, minister of transport and internal trade The MP for University—Rosedale in Ontario, Freeland was Trudeau's deputy prime minister and finance minister until her high-profile resignation in December. She unsuccessfully contested the Liberal leadership against Carney.

Steven Guilbeault, minister of Canadian identity and culture and minister responsible for official languages, minister responsible for nature, biodiversity and Parks Canada The MP for the Montreal riding of Laurier— Sainte-Marie, Guilbeault has been a longtime environmental activist who served for the last four years as Trudeau's environment minister. Carney moved him from that role in March, as Carney also moved quickly to end the unpopular carbon pricing system which Guilbeault oversaw.

Patty Hajdu, minister of jobs and families, minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario The fourth time MP for Thunder Bay—Superior North in Ontario, Hajdu has held many roles in cabinet since 2015, most recently as the minister for Indigenous services.

Mélanie Joly, minister of industry and the minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions The MP for Ahun-

tsic-Cartierville in Quebec since 2015, Joly has also served in cabinet for the last decade. A lawyer by trade, Joly served for the last four years as one of Canada's main faces on the global stage as the minister of foreign affairs.

Dominic LeBlanc, president of the King's Privy Council, minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, intergovernmental affairs and "one Canadian economy."

LeBlanc is one of the longest serving MPs in Parliament, having represented the New Brunswick riding of Beauséjour for 25 years.

He is also a cabinet veteran, serving as Trudeau's minister of finance following Freeland's departure and recently acting as one of Ottawa's lieutenants in trade negotiations with the U.S. Steven MacKinnon, government leader in the House of Commons The MP for Gatineau in Quebec, MacKinnon held the house leader role briefly in both 2024 and 2025.

He served as the government whip for several years before being appointed to cabinet in January 2024.

He held a variety of other portfolios, mostly related to labour and jobs.

David McGuinty, minister of national defence The MP for Ottawa South since 2004, McGuinty only joined cabinet in December serving as the minister for public safety and emergency preparedness. He led Canada's initial response to the U.S. accusations about fentanyl crossing the border.

For the first time ever, an Indigenous person has been chosen to lead the federal department responsible for providing services to First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.

Mandy Gull-Masty, former grand chief of the Grand Council of the Crees, was sworn in Tuesday morning as the Indigenous services minister.

Gull-Masty replaces longtime minister Patty Hajdu, who will now serve as the minister of jobs and families and the minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario.

Gull-Masty, a first-time MP, won her riding of Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou by beating Bloc Québécois MP Sylvie Bérubé, who had held it since 2019.

Sitting with her at the cabinet table will be rookie Anishinaabe MP and minister Rebecca Chartrand, who takes on the north-

ern affairs portfolio, and Métis secretary of state for rural development Buckley Belanger.

The minister in control of Indigenous services often comes into conflict with community leaders unhappy with the level of funding provided by the federal government.

So does the minister of Crown-Indigenous relations — who is now former Yellowknife mayor Rebecca Alty, who takes over from Gary Anandasangaree.

Gull-Masty found herself on the opposite side of the table in her former role as grand chief. She lobbied the government for Indigenous community funding and negotiated $200 million through the Indigenous Community Infrastructure Fund to build housing.

Gull-Masty inherits a series of uncompleted tasks in her new portfolio, including reforming the child welfare system and ensuring communities have access to clean drinking water.

on Monday, First Nations leaders pointed to those tasks as they outlined the priorities they have for the first 100 days of Prime Minister Mark Carney's government.

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak said parliamentarians would be "playing games with First Nations children's lives" if they failed to reintroduce legislation to ensure access to clean drinking water. She also pointed to a growing infrastructure gap in Indigenous communities the AFN says will cost roughly $350 billion to eliminate.

Then-prime minister Justin Trudeau pledged to bring First Nations infrastructure in line with the rest of the country by 2030, but current levels of investment are sure to push that deadline further into the future.

While Gull-Masty is the first First Nations person to lead the department, she is at least the second to be asked to take on the job since its creation in 2017.

Indigenous youths sought for engineering careers By: Carl Clutchey, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter, The Chronicle-Journal The future design and construction of roads, bridges and buildings could benefit from an Indigenous perspective — such as an emphasis on sustainable land development and clean water — if more Indigenous people were working in engineering fields.

That's the thinking behind a new Lakehead University-led program, which over the next three years aims to reach out to Indigenous elementary and secondary students to kindle their interest in engineering as a profession.

"Our shared intention

with our partners is to provide Indigenous youth with more opportunities and more pathways to become engineers, enabling them to apply their talent and perspectives to challenges facing communities across Canada, including sustainable land development, ecosystem restoration, and access to clean water, energy, and housing," LU engineering department dean Janusz Kozinski said Tuesday in a news release.

The initiative, which has received a $540,000 federal grant, has "strong support" from Fort William First Nation, the university noted.

In addition to those who attend Northwestern Ontario schools, students

in Manitoba and Saskatchewan are to be included in the program "with an emphasis on engaging Indigenous youth and their communities to promote sustainable engineering."

The program aims to annually directly engage 2,000 Indigenous youths, with an additional 5,000 to be contacted through digital communication platforms.

"We want to send a strong, compelling message to students throughout their educational journey that engineering is for everyone and there is a pathway for every student to become an engineer," Kozinski said.

The program is to start later this year, the university says.

A journey into truth telling

When Nicole Robertson was an iskwesis, a little girl, she knew what her calling was, “I always wanted to write”, she shared. “I knew at a very young age that writing was my path, my journey into truth telling, justice, and providing a platform all First Nations peoples to tell their stories—in our Indigenous ways and natural laws of knowing.” Robertson, founder of Muskwa Productions has been working in communications, creating space and platforms for Indigenous stories based on kinship values in everything she does, starting with her humility into understanding that, “[everyone’s] voice is just as important as my own.”

As Robertson reflects over a 24-year career, she notes that, “I am community made, not self-made” – because without the support, guidance, and the union of kinship from all her relations, Nicole would not be able to share stories about Indigenous peoples

in a good way, specifically bringing justice to the forefront of everything she does.

The understanding of justice that Robertson came to know, was shared with her from an Elder that spoke to justice being, “justice is not us, it is all of us,” she said, “and that goes back to kinship values, which is our innate natural laws that are embedded into this land that we have had our ancestors live upon since time and memorial.” Those innate natural laws that Robertson speaks about are deeply tied to the natural elements, “there are elements that truly speak, the water, fire, air, land, and animals speak, and we are also here to speak on behalf of them, that we have a platform and agency,” shared Nicole. Rebecca ties this understanding of platform and agency directly to why First Nations women are so connected to the land – because they are life givers and Mother Earth teaches us about the longevity and continuation of life.

“Because we are originally

from this land, we also have a responsibility for the next generations to ensure that they have water and food, at the bigger scheme of things, that is what it means to be an actual ancestor – looking at the next seven generations not just in words but in action.”

Through actions – words in motion, the heartbeat to the longevity of all our relations – when working in and for community, Roberston also makes sure to come from a place of understanding each community she works with. “If you are not the best person to tell that story, [make sure] that you are creating space for those that have that background, history or facts,” she said. “These communities should have the tools to tell their stories and also help their nations tell their stories – that is my focus, that I am helping to pass on the stories of our peoples and understanding, that it is coming from a place of humility, strength, courage, love, respect, and all the Seven Grandfather Teachings.”

Owner & Dance Choreographer Michelle Farmer began dancing at age two in Niagara Falls, New York. After surviving a ruptured appendix, her doctor suggested dance to help her regain strength—and she never looked back. When she moved to Six Nations at 12, local studios said they had nothing more to teach her. Determined to grow, she trained in Toronto, Chicago, and for 13 years in New York City, even auditioning for the Radio City Rockettes. “Never judge a studio by its size,” she says. “Even a tiny space can produce powerful dancers.”

At 14, Michelle opened her own studio with help from her father, Ronald, who built it into their home’s foundation. He passed away in 1978 during her fourth season, but his support remains central to her story. Decades later, many still call her “Miss Michelle,” and she now teaches the children of former students.

Her lifelong dedication has made her a true legacy within the community. The two people who are responsible for her success are her loving parents Ronald & Shirley Farmer who believed in their daughter at such a young age.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has launched a new artificial intelligence ministry and has named former journalist Evan Solomon to lead it.

Experts welcomed the move Tuesday, though they cautioned there are many unanswered questions about how the new minister will split responsibility for digital issues with his counterparts.

Benjamin Bergen is president of the Council of Canadian Innovators, which represents the tech sector.

He said the move recognizes that when it comes to AI, "we need to move faster and think bigger as a country."

The new portfolio was part of a major cabinet shuffle Monday which saw Carney make significant changes and additions to his cabinet.

Solomon was elected for the first time in the April 28 election in the riding of Toronto Centre. He previously worked as a TV host for both CBC and CTV. Michael Geist, Canada

research chair in internet and e-commerce law at the University of Ottawa, said the new ministry is "good signal about prioritizing AI and digital innovation."

"Naming Evan Solomon — who is smart and tech savvy — is an excellent choice," Geist said.

While the previous government introduced an AI regulation bill targeting "high-impact" systems, the bill did not become law before the election was called.

During the election campaign, Carney spoke about the economic potential of AI and promised to invest in AI training, adoption and commercialization. There was little talk during the campaign about regulating the emerging technology though the Liberal platform did include a promise to make it a criminal offence to distribute non-consensual sexual deepfakes.

Geist said that while there will be calls for the government to move quickly on regulation, "there has been a notable shift globally in recent months toward a more innovation-focused

approach."

The Liberals’ election platform promised to move fast on building data centres, introduce a tax credit to incentivize AI adoption by small and medium-sized businesses, and push to expand programs at Canada’s artificial intelligence institutes to drive AI commercialization. The platform also vowed to keep Canadian intellectual property in the country.

Critics have been saying for years that, despite Canada’s strength in artificial intelligence research, the country has been slow to commercialize the technology and has struggled to retain intellectual property.

"We were world leaders in AI research but have really struggled to ingest the technology into our government and to adopt it more broadly across Canada, and... to turn that initial strength in research into prosperity and wealth for Canadians," Bergen said.

"So I think this is really a signal that there's a real opportunity for Canada to try and capitalize on this."

AFN chief calls for speedy return of clean water legislation

By Alessia Passafiume Parliamentarians will be "playing games with First Nations children's lives" if they fail to quickly introduce and pass legislation to ensure access to clean drinking water, the Assembly of First Nations national chief said Monday.

The Liberals under then-prime minister Justin Trudeau introduced legislation that would have guaranteed the right to clean drinking water — but it failed to become law before Parliament was prorogued and an election was called.

"Every member of Parliament in Canada that's going to sit in that House has an obligation to think about all the children of this country, and shame on people that played games, pushing it down politically, kicking it to each other and blaming each other, even through the election," National Chief Cindy

Woodhouse Nepinak told a news conference Monday.

"You all had an obligation.

You all had the chance to support that."

Following a lengthy study of the bill in a committee, and during an ongoing debate that gridlocked the government for months, the Liberals attempted to send it to the Senate through a unanimous consent motion but it was struck down by the Conservatives.

The Conservatives then introduced the same motion but added language that condemned the actions of the Liberals on the file. That motion was also struck down and the bill then died on the order paper when Trudeau prorogued the government in January.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has indicated his government will reintroduce the legislation, known in the last Parlia-

ment as Bill C-61, after speaking with Indigenous communities. Woodhouse Nepinak said she'll hold him to that promise.

The national chief made her comments Monday alongside other First Nations leaders who were outlining their expectations for the first 100 days of the new government.

They said First Nations must have a seat at the table as Canada works to expand the economy in the midst of trade friction with the United States, and as some voters in Western Canada flirt with a sovereignty movement.

"Over $560 billion of projects are forecasted on our traditional lands over the next decade. The potential benefits are measured in the trillions of dollars," Woodhouse Nepinak said.

"But they won't advance without First Nations' support."

In response to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in-

troducing a bill that would make it easier for Albertans to launch referendums on various topics — including separating from Canada — Woodhouse Nepinak said the federal government should initiate a constitutional review of the Natural Resources Transfer Agreement signed in 1930.

She said that agreement violates treaties and protections for Indigenous Peoples that are now included in the Constitution but were not taken into consideration when the federal government was negotiating with the three Prairie provinces. She said the "unilateral" imposition of that agreement undermines those rights and treaties.

"Now is the time to demonstrate to the world that we can win by being inclusive, respecting rights and treaties," Woodhouse Nepinak said.

Chief Gerald Toney of

Annapolis Valley First Nation said he wants to see changes to the way Fisheries and Oceans Canada operates in his territory. He called on the government to honour its commitment to review an incident from early last year, when two Mik'maw fisherman were detained and released far from their homes in freezing temperatures without adequate clothing or their cellphones.

Trudeau also promised his government would bring forward a new First Nations policing law in 2020 after years of calls from Indigenous leaders. The bill never materialized, despite ministers saying publicly on multiple occasions it would be tabled imminently.

Woodhouse Nepinak said chiefs are united in their call to move that legislation forward and on reforming the "racist" child welfare system.

Carney has said he'll put

back on the table a $47.8 billion deal to reform the First Nations child welfare system — a deal chiefs voted down on two occasions following a decades-long court battle that found Canada was discriminating against First Nations children.

The national chief also pointed to the growing infrastructure gap in Indigenous communities — which the AFN estimates will cost $350 billion to fix and which Trudeau pledged to address by 2030. Current levels of investment are sure to push that deadline farther in the future.

"In order to propel this country to be a number 1 G7 country, it needs to invest in First Nations people," Woodhouse Nepinak said.

"We can't drop the ball on that."

One man arrested following shooting in Saint John, N.B. STAFF REPORT

Police in Saint John, N.B., say one man has been arrested following a shooting Tuesday in the commercial, uptown area of the city.

Police said they responded to a report of shots fired at 10:28 a.m. and found a 20-year-old man dead in a vehicle. They did not release details about the victim.

Three male suspects were seen leaving the area on foot, they said, describing the shooting as an isolated incident.

An Alert Ready notification described the suspects as a white man with brown hair and wearing a dark jacket; a white man

with dark clothing, and a Black man wearing a light blue hoody with dark pants.

Police did not say which of the three had been arrested.

"It’s still an ongoing investigation and police are trying to identify and locate the other two suspects," Staff Sgt. Shawna Fowler, from Saint John Police Force, said in a statement.

It was not immediately clear whether all three were armed.

The shooting led police to lock down schools in the area around King's Square and issue an order for residents to remain indoors.

Police lifted those restrictions a few hours later after the arrest.

Jordan’s Principle funding applications are being delayed, with some applications taking up to a year to process, after the federal government announced it would be cutting funds from the program last November.

Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Councillors criticized the way the program was being used and warned at its general finance meeting last week more community members would be coming to them for funding after being turned away from Jordan’s Principle.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of Jordan River Anderson, a Norway House Cree First Nation child with disabilities who died on Feb. 2, 2005 in a hospital while agencies and governments argued who was financially responsible for his at-home care on the reserve.

In response, the federal government later enacted “Jordan’s Principle”, a fund meant to help First Nations

children get the care they need.

“Jordan’s Principle is about one thing: making sure First Nations children get the care they need, when they need it,” said Manitoba Grand Chief Kyra Wilson. “No child should suffer while governments make unilateral changes to services and supports for families.”

Earlier this year, the federal government narrowed the range of eligible services for Jordan’s Principle funding.

Department of Well-Being Director Deb Jonathan said the fund was established to help with medical costs.

“It quickly became more than medically-related, more than health-related,” she told the finance committee. “It became a catchall for everything. It was the go-to for everything.”

She said her department’s role was to help support families in their applications, not approve or deny them.

She clarified Indigenous Services Canada made

funding decisions on Jordan’s Principle applications and that they were notified last November that changes were coming to the program.

Previously, with emergency situations, like a family experiencing a house fire, “we were able to put measures in place immediately to house and shelter that family and then continue with application,” said Jonathan. “A lot of applications for those situations, their workers were versed in what they knew what would get approved. We were getting approved for them because the workers knew what to put down, how to support that family.

With this change now, we are no longer able to do that. We are no longer able to submit those emergency applications for approval.

We now have to submit applications and wait for approval.”

She said any applications now need to have a support letter from a professional like a doctor or nurse. Approvals are also very late.

SIX NATIONS POLICE Constable - Contract Position Applications for a contract position for Constable with the Six Nations Police are now being called for.

ST. CATHARINES, ON – Indigenous activists Ashley Cronkwright, Fred Bowering, Lesroy Walcott, and Brandi Johnson will be lighting a Healing Fire at Richard Pierpoint Park in St. Catharines, Ontario to hold a safe space for those affected by the City’s recent anti-encampment by-law.

They will hold the fire from 1-4 pm on Sunday, May 18th, and every Sunday from then.

Ashley previously successfully challenged the City of St. Catharines by exercising her Indigenous right to light Healing Fires on property claimed by the City, and campaigned for the rights of her brother Johnny Cronkwright.

Ashley is an organizer of the High Heels to Moccasins group which served food and clothing to the unhoused who are targeted by the by-law. Ashley says she is targeted by the by-law herself as section 8.2 says directors of an organization which “knowingly concurs”

Ashley Cronkwright said, “The City’s by-law is ongoing colonialism and punishes organizations that protect the unhoused. I will light a Healing Fire to let them know we are here for them. It's my right to have a Healing Fire there. The City tried to stop me before but I continued to light it every week for almost 2 years and served food and clothing. I switched to outreach but this by-law is calling me back to the park. Sunday

Ashley added, “The Healing Fire space is also in Memory of Loved Ones Lost and in Support of Families and Friends of Loved Ones Lost to Mental Health, Addiction and Homelessness or Living Through It.” A January 7, 2025 memo from Niagara Region’s Homelessness Services Manager on the Homelessness Point-in-Time Count noted, “The Indigenous population…accounted for 28% of the population experiencing homelessness in Niagara. This highlights the need for culturally sensitive, community-driven solutions to homelessness within these communities.”

The City of St. Catharines anti-encampment by-law, called the “Public Space Use By-law,” includes fines for not just each day, but each part of a day unhoused people have temporary shelters in certain parts of the City.

All applicants must fill out a standard application form available at the Six Nations Police Station.

CRITERIA for applicants are as follows: Minimum Requirements to be considered for a career in First Nations Policing with the Six Nations Police Service, you must: - Be 19 years of age or over and able to provide an official birth certificate or proof of age; - Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position having regard to your own safety and the safety of members of the public - Have successfully completed at least 4 years of Secondary School education or its equivalent (official transcripts and diplomas will be required) - Be of good moral character and habits, meaning that you are an individual other people would consider being trustworthy and having integrity, with no criminal record; - Certified by a physician to be fit for duty as a front line Six Nations Police Constable and able to pass physical tests which are required in the recruiting process - Possess a valid driver’s license with no more than 6 accumulated demerit points, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges - Be able to pass a security clearance as well as background investigation, credit card and reference checks If you have any criminal convictions under a Federal Statute you must obtain a pardon.

The Jr. “A” Arrows annual entry traditionally begins as part of the Victoria Day, better known around Ohsweken as the “Bread and Cheese” weekend. This year, the Arrows open their season against the newly branded Burlington Blaze. The ball drops, Monday, May 19, at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, at 4 pm. Maple Leafs, Panthers set for pivotal Game 5 in roller-coaster series

Craig Berube barked orders from the centre circle.

The Maple Leafs head coach watched intently as his team practised its breakouts and power play — two of the reasons Toronto's 2-0 lead in its second-round series with the Panthers evaporated in Florida's heat.

Discipline, or a lack thereof, is another facet that needs to be cleaned up.

Berube will be looking for improvement in all three areas. If it doesn't happen, Toronto could be in deep trouble.

The Leafs host the Panthers on Wednesday in an Atlantic Division playoff matchup tied 2-2. The series now stands as a best-of-three for a spot in the Eastern Conference final after Florida held serve on home ice, including Sunday's stifling 2-0 triumph.

The defending Stanley Cup champions got back to their vaunted forecheck

at home in a pair of victories following consecutive defeats in Toronto.

That bottled up the Leafs' ability to quickly move the puck from defence to their skilled forwards, often killing rush chances before they had even begun.

"Definitely a heavier forecheck team the last two games," Berube said Tuesday following practice.

"Pucks are going in deep and they're coming."

Toronto's power play, meanwhile, is clicking at just 13.3 per cent in the series after scoring six times on 17 opportunities in the opening round.

The Panthers present a different challenge with a pressure-packed approach when down a skater.

The Leafs, who have two man-advantage goals in the second round, were unable to handle that aggressive style Sunday when they got nothing from three power plays in the second period.

"Try to work the puck around," Toronto winger Mitch Marner said of the

best attack plan against Florida's kill. "Get them tired and then from that point on, just try to exploit areas."

Before those fruitless power-play opportunities Sunday, the Leafs held a parade to the penalty box in the opening 20 minutes. Toronto, thanks to the stellar goaltending of Joseph Woll, nearly survived, but gave up the game's first goal seconds after a 5-on-3 expired.

"We can't go to the box that many times, especially four (minor penalties) in the first period," said Berube, who went with the same defence pairs and forward lines at practice. "Takes your momentum away, takes certain guys out of their rhythm on the bench, and overusing other guys. It's not a good recipe. Gotta be more disciplined.

"The stick (penalties) aren't good … those are the ones, in my opinion, that hurt you."

Woll, who made 35 stops in Game 4 as one of Toron-

to's few bright spot, said his group remains resolute in its belief.

"We're going to stick to our process and play the same we have all season, and let that take care of itself," he said. "We have a lot of confidence."

The Leafs, however, haven't won a series tied 2-2 since 2004. An organization with plenty of baggage, Toronto's playoff demons are hard to shake.

The Original Six franchise — one without a Cup victory since 1967 — led the Panthers 3-1 in the second period of Game 3 with a chance to grab a stranglehold before Florida got off the mat.

The Leafs didn't have an answer. They need one now. Game 6, with either Toronto or Florida facing elimination, goes Friday back down south.

"We can't focus on what's ahead of us," Marner said.

"We've just got to focus on what's going on right now.

That's all we can worry about."

There's little room for

error.

STOLARZ SKATES Anthony Stolarz was on the ice ahead of practice.

It marked the first time the goaltender has been seen by media members since leaving Game 1 after taking an elbow to the head from Panthers centre Sam Bennett.

Berube said Stolarz is progressing, but there's no timeline for his return.

"Good little morale boost," said Woll, who split Toronto's crease with Stolarz much of the regular season. "It's nice to see."

QUESTION MARK Panthers head coach Paul Maurice told reporters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that the status of Evan Rodrigues for Game 5 is unclear.

The forward, who practised before Florida travelled to Toronto, has yet to be cleared after taking a big hit Sunday from Leafs defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson that resulted in an interference penalty.

LOOKING AHEAD Berube had a chat with

Max Domi at the end of practice. The forward was fined US$5,000 by the NHL's Department of Player Safety after he crushed Florida captain Aleksander Barkov into the boards from behind in the dying seconds of Game 4.

Domi was asked for his thoughts on the sequence.

"Just looking forward to the next game, bud," he replied.

A followup question on any potential carry-over into Wednesday got the same response.

Berube, meanwhile, doesn't expect Domi to change his approach.

"Your emotions get high and things happen," said the coach. "That's part of the game. We all know that. He's going to be fine.

Just go out and play his game and do his thing.

You can't worry about if there's going to be a reaction."
