Six Nations is mourning the 16th Covid-related death in the community as positive Covid-19 cases reach an all-time high in what Six Nations Elected Council called a “crisis.”

The Six Nations of the Grand River communications department confirmed the 16th death on Monday evening and said a press release is forthcoming.

Meanwhile, Six Nations once again has the highest positive case count per capita in the province.

Six Nations has 961 positive cases per 100,000 people compared to Hamilton’s 861.

There are currently 75 active cases in the community, with four people hospitalized as they battle Covid-19.

Ohsweken Public Health has yet to confirm a positive case of the Omicron variant circulating the globe.

In the meantime, the surge in cases is also hitting two vulnerable locations in the community.

Elders’ residence Iroquois Lodge and the shelter at Ganohkwasra Family Assault Support Services have both reported Covid-19 outbreaks.

Public Health confirmed the outbreak at the lodge on Jan. 6, shutting it down to all visitors except essential caregivers.

In a press release, Six Nations Health Services said 27 rapid tests conducted at the lodge came back positive on Jan. 7. By press time, 30 residents had tested positive and the cases are being characterized as mild or moderate.

All residents are being asked to remain in their rooms and group activities have been suspended, while the lodge remains understaffed during the outbreak. Elected Council said it has asked other staff to be re-deployed to the lodge during the outbreak.

Ganohkwasra confirmed an outbreak last week and has since shut down the shelter to any new admissions while it implements its Covid outbreak management plan.

“We know this is a high-risk time for violence and abuse to occur within homes,” said Sandra Montour, Ganohkwasra Executive Director. “Families are isolated and incredibly stressed due to the impact Covid-19 is having on their lives. Therefore, Ganohkwasra remains committed to ensure the safety and protection of our community members.”

One of the country’s foremost infectious disease specialists is encouraging people to get the Covid-19 vaccine, saying it is safe, effective and reduces the chance of serious illness, hospitalization and death.

Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist based in Toronto, said after 10 billion doses have been administered worldwide since December 2020, the data has shown uniformly across all countries that Covid vaccines are safe and effective at reducing death and hospitalization from Covid-19.

“The best thing you can do to protect yourself and those around you is get the vaccine,” he said during a live question and answer session on Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council’s Facebook page Tuesday night.

Dr. Bogoch said the currently circulating Omicron variant is not as severe as the Delta variant that dominated the globe last year but because of its infectiousness, there are more cases of the disease now and even a small percentage of severe infections among such a large number of infections is cause for concern.

“It’s not as bad as the Delta vairant but that doesn’t mean it’s not bad,” he said. “That’s why you’re seeing things stretched. I think we’re going to watch cases rise very quickly.”

The good news, he said, is that he expects to see cases lower in the coming weeks.

“The best thing you can do to protect yourself and those around you is get the vaccine,” he said, in addition to getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising.

Dr. Bogosh said every single country around the world “has almost identical data” showing the vaccine’s effectiveness in reducing hospitalizations and death from Covid-19.

It’s not perfect, he said, but it reduces the severity of infection, saying vaccinated folks are “way, way, way less likely” to end up in the intensive care unit from a Covid-19 infection.

“Vaccines work really

well.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Bogosh said Covid-19 is not going away.

“Covid is going to be around for a long, long time.

What’s going to change is that we gradually build up immunity.”

That way, when future waves come, the virus will only produce such things as a mild sniffle in most people and it won’t have as much of an impact on society as it does now, he said.

“That’s what will happen eventually.”

While Six Nations deals with outbreaks, Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council announced it was revamping its response to the pandemic, and has ordered enough rapid tests for every household in the community.

“It is our hope that at the end of the day you will have the right information via the radio,” said Six Nations Elected Coun. Nathan Wright.

The band has scrapped its previous colour-coded alert level and associated responses and has instead announced it is adopting provincial guidelines in responding to surges in cases.

3 SIX NATIONS POLICE Social Navigator Civilian - Contract Position

Applications for a contract position for a Social Navigator civilian position with the Six Nations Police Service are now being called for.

The position will assist the organization in successfully meeting its mission of providing culturally sensitive policing services to the Six Nations Police Service (SNPS). The Social Navigator position serves to address challenges in relation to lack of access/awareness of social services. The Social Navigator will work closely with service agencies and the Six Nations community. The goal of the Social Navigator is to link individuals to the appropriate community organizations for assistance to improve overall health, safety and quality of life, in collaboration with the SNP Community Services Officer and Mental Health Liaison.

The Social Navigator will work with the Drug Strategy and High-Risk Committees to maintain program statistics. Further responsibilities include creating outward facing social media for the SNPS, record keeping storing/filing information retrieved from technology, document writing (such as the annual report and proposals as required), and assisting with the creation of educational crime prevention and community safety information. The position requires tactfulness and diplomacy in interaction with the public, other justice partners, and with all staff members.

Land defenders leave Arrowdale site DONNA DURIC

The Arrowdale site is now empty after land defenders left the property last week ahead of an injunction obtained by the City of Brantford.

A group of land defenders led by Six Nations man Trevor Bomberry began occupying the former golf course in October to protest the city’s plans to re-develop the green space. The former golf course sits on Six Nations land under claim.

The City of Brantford had obtained an interim injunction threatening anyone who accessed the site

with trespassing charges.

At 3:30 on Dec. 31, a rep from Six Nations told Brantford Police that they would be gone by 4:30, according to Maria Visocchi, the city’s director of communications and community engagement.

“Once city staff confirmed that those occupying the site had safely departed the property along with their belongings, barriers and locks were installed to re-secure the site, and ensure public safety.

She said the site hasn’t been inspected since the land was occupied on Oct. 9 and the city is unsure of its current condition.

“The public is reminded that without safe access

to the site, the city has not been in a position to inspect and/or maintain the lands and ensure suitability for safe public access at this time. Any activity on the site, including tobogganing, is prohibited until further notice.”

The interim injunction restraining the named defendants and anyone with knowledge of the order from trespassing on the property was extended again by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on Dec. 29 to allow legal representation for the defendants more time to respond to the city’s motion materials.

Land defenders said they plan to continue the fight in court.

“We want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who's shared updates and concern over the incidents that took place on nu:yah (new years day),” a group known as Arrowdale Land Defenders posted on Facebook. “With the situation before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice it was decided in good faith to pull back efforts directly on the frontline in an attempt for this to be honourably settled within the courts.”

“We have not abandoned you,” the group said.

“Our stance is solidified in keeping this space green.

The matter is expected to be heard again in court Jan. 20.

Extra precaution in the face of Omicron As children and families across Ontario get ready to return to the classroom in the face of Omicron — Six Nations students are being told to sit tight and wait while the Six Nations Federal Schools leadership and Six Nations Emergency Control Group determine the best back to school plan for elementary kids on the rez.

This has led some parents, grandparents and caretakers to great frustration while others are breathing a sigh of relief.

The situation gets more confusing when you consider that after two years of meetings, consultations, community feedback and revisions to the Six Nations Pandemic Response Framework, the elected council has opted to finally follow suit with the provincial framework when it comes to lockdowns and determining the risks to the public regarding community transmission.

All of this has left the community wondering — what has it all been for?

Six Nations experience to the pandemic is unique in so many aspects — and it shows in our infection rates. We are one of the most urban located and largest reserve communities in Canada. Our residents were exempt from border crossing restrictions in many cases, which put our families at additional risk. Multiple families in a single home, often overcrowded, is another risk along with the likelihood of preexisting conditions.

Combine all of this with a low vaccine rate in the community and a low compliance rate for physical distancing protocols and its not hard to see why we have been riding in a perfect storm for the

last two years.

Six Nations should have been aligned with provincial lockdown measures from the beginning of the pandemic. Again, due to our unique economic situation we are unlike many jurisdictions that have essential services in their community bubble. Many families must leave Six Nations for employment, groceries and medical appointments every day.

This means that we have an increased risk of transmission because on Six Nations because we are required to shop, work and get medical care outside of the community — and we are travelling to an unlimited number of other jurisdictions to do that. In essence — our way of living on the rez is a super spreader by design — even without the increased risks of pre-existing conditions and overcrowded housing.

This is why the Six Nations schools must take extra precaution in the face of Omicron, a wildly infectious version of COVID that is already spreading in the community.

Vaccine protection to prevent cases is not enough. Physical distancing, working from home where possible, and yes, keeping children home for an extended period are choices that will bear a significant difference on how Six Nations rides this wave.

Hospitals across Canada are reporting increases in the number of children being hospitalized due to Omicron. In part due to the rise in case numbers.

But the statistics are still alarming. Six infants were hospitalized with Omicron in Hamilton and Ottawa since December. Health

officials say that Omicron is much more respiratory in children than adults, which means those little ones with reactive airways, asthma and other respiratory challenges are going to be hit harder.

Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced several recent appointments including Honourable Jonathon C. George, an Ojibway judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in London, as Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Other appointments included the Honourable Lise G. Favreau, a judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in Toronto, appointed Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal for Ontario, and Michael J. Valente, partner at Scarfone Hawkins LLP in Hamilton, appointed Judge of the Superior Court of

Justice of Ontario.

“This process emphasizes transparency, merit, and the diversity of the Canadian population, and will continue to ensure the appointment of jurists who meet the highest standards of excellence and integrity,” said a Dec. 20, 2021 press release.

George was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in 2016.

He graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1999 and was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 2001.

At the time of his appointment to the Superior Court of Justice, Justice George was a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice in London. He articled and practiced law at Robbins, Henderson, and Davis from 2001 to 2012, building a criminal defence practice.

As an Ojibway of Pottawatomi descent, he has represented members of the First Nations community, including as legal counsel to the Kettle and Stony Point Chief and Council. As special duty counsel with Legal Aid Ontario, he provided summary legal advice to those in the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation. He has also been co-counsel for the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, involved in

complex land claim negotiations.

George has been on the panel for the Ontario Children's Lawyer. He has served on the boards of directors for St. Clair Child and Youth Services in Sarnia and the Canadian Mental Health Association in Lambton-Kent. He was also a member of the Lambton County Youth Justice Steering Committee and chair of the Kettle and Stony Point Constitutional Development Committee.

“I wish Justices George, Favreau, and Valente every success in their new roles.

I know they will serve the people of Ontario well as members of the Court of Appeal and Superior Court of Justice,” said Lametti.

At the Superior Court level, more than 495 judges have been appointed since November 2015.

These exceptional jurists represent the diversity that strengthens Canada.

Of these judges, more than half are women, and appointments reflect an increased representation of visible minorities, Indigenous, LGBTQ2+, and those who self-identify as having a disability.

Favreau was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in 2017.

She earned her B.A. in English literature at McGill University and her LL.B. at the University of Toronto.

She has been a frequent speaker, including in the areas of administrative law, civil litigation, and ethics.

She has also been a dedicated mentor to younger lawyers and students.

Valente received his LLB from the University of Ottawa in 1982 after studying and working

abroad. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1984. In 1999, he received his LLM from Osgoode Hall Law School with a specialty in bankruptcy and insolvency.

Valente currently lives in Hamilton with his spouse, who is also a lawyer, and their two daughters.

George replaces Justice M. Jamal, who was elevated to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2021.

Favreau replaces Justice D.M. Brown, who elected to become a supernumerary judge in 2021, and Valente replaces Justice J.W. Sloan, who elected to become a supernumerary judge also in 2021.

Federal judicial appointments are made by the Governor General, acting on the advice of the federal Cabinet and recommendations from the Minister of Justice.

To do this the Post Secondary Funding Advisor will:  Be knowledgeable about all Board and Operational policies and procedures.  Coordinate all matters relating to the programs and services within the Post Secondary Funding Advisor's designated student caseload.  Provide orientation and support services to all students within their designated student caseload.  Be knowledgeable about post secondary programs, services, and procedures in post secondary institutions attended by Six Nations students.  Maintain accurate student files for their designated student caseload.  Provide liaison between the GRPSEO and Six Nations secondary school students, post secondary institutions, other educational agencies and institutions.  Make appropriate referrals of students to other agencies that will assist the student in accomplishing their post secondary education objectives.  Contribute to the overall development and coordination of programs and services of the GRPSEO.  Carry out duties in a professional manner consistent with a team approach.

Southern-style grill opens on Six Nations

Local favourites with a southern spin While some might shy away from opening a new restaurant during a pandemic, Nick ‘Nitro’ Wyman saw an opportunity in his community of Six Nations and opened the doors to his new restaurant, Dixieland Grill, in October, at 700 Chiefswood Road.

“It’s not a southern-style restaurant completely, but it is heavily influenced by it,” Wyman told the Two Row Times a few months after the restaurant opened. “Country fried steak, biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, lots of comfort food on the menu, with some healthy alternatives too.”

Wyman didn’t want to abandon the favourites everyone in the community has grown to love locally, so he said he still has classics such as burgers, pizza, fries, and wings.

“All the stuff you love — I just meshed the two styles together. We have four different cuts of steak too,” he said.

Wyman said he picked the menu based on things he liked, and selected

dishes he found while living down south or travelling as a pro wrestler years earlier.

“So far, some of our best sellers are pizza and wings. Steaks are even more popular than I thought, we’re selling dozens if not more every night,” explained Wyman.

Wyman said his restaurant has still been quite busy despite the pandemic and will be doing an 11-11 timeline with COVID restrictions on indoor dining.

“We’re going to roll with the punches from COVID and see what happens.

Starting a new restaurant is all about patience and being in it for the long haul. Restaurants take a lot of trial and error to succeed but my partner and I know what we are doing and are confident in our abilities and menu,” said Wyman. “And I want to hear from the community how to make things better — if you don’t tell me there’s a problem, I won’t know to fix it. Let me know what I can do to make things better.”

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED FOR THE POSITION:  

University degree or College diploma with concentration in a relevant field.

Evidence through work history of prior achievement of at least two – three years of work experience demonstrating capability in a client based setting.

Prior successful experience in a multi-task work environment requiring professional level of time, information and project management skills is preferred.

Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office programs and internet interaction.

Proven ability to ensure accuracy of work dealing with data entry and editing.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:        

Satisfactory police check and must be bondable.

Able to travel using own vehicle and valid driver’s license (some over night travel required).

The Transitional Program Coordinator works collaboratively with the Transitional Housing Support Worker and Crisis Intervention team members. The Transitional Program Coordinator is responsible for identifying and scheduling cultural-specific programming that supports Indigenous women and children.
