SIX NATIONS — A new arrest has been made in an ongoing triple homicide investigation at Six Nations.

OPP announced Vern Shipman, 33 of Six Nations is now charged as an Accessory to Murder after the fact in the slaying of Melissa Miller, Al Porter and Micheal Jamieson.

Police say Shipman was arrested on March 28 and remains in police custody.

His arrest marks the sixth person charged in the case. A publication ban remains in effect.

A massive investigation began November 4 after the bodies of 37-year-old Miller, 33-year-old Porter and 32-year-old Jamieson were found near a pickup truck outside Oneida Nation of the Thames.

On March 8, Police held a press conference to announce the arrests of Nicholas Shipman, 36;

The Six Nations community is still reeling from the loss of three community members as more information regarding the triple homicide filters in.

Thomas Bomberry, 30; and Jamie Beaver, 32, all of Six Nations of the Grand River. All three are facing second degree murder charges in the case.

Another Six Nations woman, 36-year-old Kirsten Bomberry, is facing three counts of Accessory After the Fact to Murder.

On March 26, police arrested Roland Sturgeon, 21, of Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. He is charged as an Accessory to Murder after the fact.

tigating on November 4, 2018 after the victims bodies were found along with an abandoned pickup truck in a privately owned field outside Oneida Nation of the Thames.

Police said Miller was seven-months pregnant at the time of her death.

Officers said they have identified the cause of death as homicide, but declined to share details on that or any other aspect of the investigation.

All accused remain in police custody.

Investigators would not

publicly comment on the relationships among the accused or between them and the homicide victims.

The surviving family members for all three victims released a joint statement through the Six Nations Justice Department expressing thanks to police and community members who contributed information that lead to the arrest of the accused.

BRANTFORD — Brantford Police are issuing a stern warning to the public after a deadly weekend in the city, leaving three dead from opioid overdoses.

Police said in 48 hours they responded to six total suspected opioid overdose calls.

Officers say they are working with the coroners

office in each case and say they suspect fentanyl is a factor in the deaths.

Woodstock police also reported six fentanyl overdoses in two days. Officers say they believe there is potentially a new type of fentanyl in the area that is related to these overdoses and are reminding the public that Naloxone rescue kits are free and available at local pharmacies and can be kept on hand as part of halting an overdose.

OHSWEKEN — A 54 year old man from Six Nations has been arrested and accused in two separate robberies.

OPP say Scott MtPleasant entered a smoke shop, stole cash from the register during a transaction

and fled.

He was seen leaving the area in a red pickup truck.

Officers located the truck a short time later and identified the accused. OPP say he is the same suspect in another robbery on March 11.

MtPleasant is charged with two counts of robbery and possession of break in instruments.

Haudenosaunee writer Alicia Elliott's look at intergenerational trauma STAFF REPORT TORONTO — In Haudenosaunee philosophy, there is the principle of seven generations: the awareness that the consequences of your decisions will ripple seven generations into the future, and your current situation is the product of actions taken by the seven generations prior.

For Alicia Elliott, a Tuscarora writer of Six Nations of the Grand River who lives in Brantford, Ont., this telescopic perspective _ leaping forward, arching back, extending in all directions _ allows her to see centuries of intergenerational trauma, filtered through the intimate details of her life.

The result is ``A Mind Spread Out on the Ground,'' Elliott's debut book published by Doubleday Canada earlier this week.

The title is a translation of a Mohawk phrase Elliott uses to describe the mental sprawl of her depression, which she sees as symptomatic of the conscious experience of colonialism. ``It's a very abstract thing for a lot of people, but when you come from a people that has experienced (colonialism), it's lived in your body. It does take up a portion of your mind,'' Elliott, 31, said in a recent interview. ``It makes you feel like you are less, because that's what you're being told by all of these experiences in your life.''

In the collection of essays, some of which have

previously appeared in magazines and newspapers, Elliott remembers being caught up in the conflict between her white Catholic mother, who cycled in and out of mental-health facilities to treat bipolar disorder, and Haudenosaunee father. While her parents provided plenty of love and support, Elliott describes how their own emotional trauma sometimes spilled out in ways that could be hurtful.

The itch of lice followed Elliott and her siblings as they bounced between motels, homeless shelters and a cramped trailer without running water, she writes.

She took pains to conceal signs of squalor at school or when social workers started asking questions.

Elliott continued to lead a ``double life'' through university as a teenage mother, pumping breast milk in her dorm room to the feral soundtrack of trysts in the nearby co-ed bathroom.

She also writes about being sexually assaulted, but decided to omit graphic descriptions of violence, because she doesn't think survivors should feel obligated to relive their traumas for public consumption.

Elliott interlaces these personal vignettes with research-backed analysis, toggling between the micro and macro.

She draws an analogy between the difficulties of detecting dark matter and the insidious influence of racism, and explores how the elevated risk of obesity

among Indigenous people today may be genetically traced to malnutrition in residential schools.

She also makes the case that members of Canada's literary establishment continue to scrutinize Indigenous writers' claims to identity through a similar framework to the Indian Act _ even in the lead up to the book's release, Elliott said she fielded a pointed question about her ``blood quantum.''

But there are signs the tides are shifting, she said, as a burgeoning cohort of Indigenous writers _ including mentor Tanya

Talaga, who named Elliott the 2018 winner of the RBC Taylor Emerging Writer Award _ disrupt the literary conversation both in print and online.

Elliott, who has more than 13,000 followers on Twitter, credits the social media platform with helping her hone her voice by exposing her to new perspectives, and allowing her to feel connected to the Indigenous community even when she couldn't be at Six Nations. ``It's helped having more voices out there, because the reality is, there is no one Indigenous voice,''

Elliott said. ``The public is moving a lot faster than the government in terms of wanting to have that knowledge, and wanting to move forward with it in ways that are really positive.''

Thinking about how ``A Mind Spread Out on the Ground'' will be inherited by the next seven generations, Elliott hopes that in seeing how the forces of racism, poverty, abuse and mental illness have shaped her trajectory, readers will consider their own place within these systems of oppression _ whom they profit, and at whose expense.

Elliott said she wanted to make space for these conversations getting to the core of Canada's national identity, carrying Indigenous and non-Indigenous readers alike through this difficult terrain, towards a common cause. ``There's this whole idea in Haudenosaunee culture that the land isn't ours, the Earth isn't ours. It belongs to our children and our grandchildren. We're just borrowing it,'' Elliott said. ``Hopefully, we can start making better choices for the coming faces, for people who are going to be here.''

SIX NATIONS — Chiefswood Park, home to the national museum commemorating the life of E. Pauline Johnson and Six Nations local access to the Grand River has some exciting changes for its 2019 season.

Six Nations Tourism manages the park and conducted a community survey seeking feedback on what hours should be.

The results will see changes starting this year.

The park will be open

daily for tour season starting Saturday, May 18 through to Saturday, October 13 from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m..

“Chiefswood Park will become a place where community members and visitors alike can learn about our rich Haudenosaunee history, the site will be a fun, interactive, and safe area for families to enjoy and spend time together,” said Constance Jamieson, Manager of Six Nations Tourism. Over the next few years through a phased approach, Six Nations Tourism will be transforming the park into a year-round facility with a

number of enhancements to boost tourism while improving the space for community use.

Available in the 2019 Tour Season, Chiefswood Park will offer various rental activities to the Six Nations Community and tourists to the area including, Canoe/Kayak Rentals, Experience Packages, boat dock launch, and guided and non-guided tours through the park and/or the historic sites.

Construction in the upper level of the park will be ongoing as new cabins are completed. Officials say the work is expected to be finished by Fall 2019.

The lone male occupant fled on foot and was

Austin Anderson-Hill, 24, of Ohsweken is charged with fleeing from police, dangerous driving, possessing stolen property and break in instruments, breach of probation and four counts of failing to comply with recognizance.

Geraldine Burning, 68, of Ohsweken was driving in front of Six Nations Police when her vehicle drove onto the shoulder of Second Line, cross the centre line to the other side of the street and crashed into the south ditch.

She was arrested and

given a brethalyzer test which she failed.

She is facing 2 impaired driving charges. The vehicle was towed from the scene. Police say Burning was not hurt in the crash.

She is scheduled to appear in court on May 23 to answer to those charges.

OHSWEKEN — It was a very emotional meeting at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, after a collective put in a request to have the memorial title of the Gaylord Powless Arena in Ohsweken changed back to it’s former name, “Six Nations Sports & Cultural Memorial Centre”.

A delegation made up of people who say their families were involved in the fundraising and efforts to build an arena for the community of Six Nations brought the request to the Elected Council.

“This is the only time, in my lifetime, that the whole reserve worked together, to do something together,” said presenter Mike Montour. “From First Line to Sixth Line, everybody worked together.”

Montour was talking about the work put in by the “original builders”, who he says have been meeting regularly to orga-

nize the request and bring it before the community.

A presentation was shown to those in attendance, including a large representation of Gaylord Powless’ family, explaining what the group is asking for and why.

A letter was presented from Six Nations resident Vera Styres requesting “that council rescind Resolution No. 7 of July 24, 2001, moved by Carl Hill, Seconded by Roger Jonathan, ‘that this council rename the Six Nations Sports & Memorial Centre to the Gaylord Powless Sports Centre’.”

Styres, who was part of the original building committee, says the name change has deprived community members of acknowledgement or recognition. Styres writes the ask is to “recover our legacy”.

Montour gave a 30 minute presentation about the history of the arena build. He says materials were donated, recycled and fundraised for over a number of years by community members. An add-

by Jean Cretien, then Minister of Indian Affairs and in-kind work donated by community steelworkers and construction workers saw the Ohsweken arena constructed in 1972.

Members of Powless’ family spoke, and were visibly upset by the request to rescind the memorial naming of the arena. One member of the family shared they were troubled false rumours swirling on social media, claiming memorial re-naming of the Ohsweken arena was something the family asked SNEC for.

SNEC Councillor Carl Hill spoke and said he made the recommendation at the request of a community member from Six Nations who is not from Gaylord’s family.

That individual asked SNEC to bring a motion to rename the area in memory of Gaylord Powless.

Gaylord’s daughter, Gaylene, spoke and said the rumour was very distressing, as she was 17 years old at the time of his death and focused on

spending those final days with her father.

TRT was able to confirm the request came to Elected Council from a person on Six Nations whose last name is also Powless, but with no direct relation to Gaylord’s family.

One community member said there should have been public notice prior to the name change.

According to historical records, SNEC passed a Band Council Resolution to change the arena name to the “Gaylord Powless Sports Centre” on July 24, 2001. A memo was then sent to Six Nations Parks and Recreation informing them of the change.

In September of 2001, the General Council then heard back from people representing the original committee — that the area name change was acceptable but should be altered to “Gaylord Powless Arena” and the title “Six Nations Sports and Cultural Memorial Centre” be bestowed upon the entire complex area including the community hall,

arena and new structures that, at that time, were in the works.

To date the current Six Nations Sports and Cultural Memorial Centre includes the GPA, the Six Nations Community Hall, Dajoh Youth and Elders Centre, lacrosse field, blue running track, a splash pad, an outdoor rink, skateboard park, plus the Six Nations ball diamond, horse track, a concession stand and is the current home of the Six Nations Parks and Recreation offices.

A billboard stands at the front of the complex naming the site as designated original name and inside the doorway of the GPA a plaque naming original building committee members and telling the story of their contributions hangs across from a plaque of equal size commemorating Gaylord Powless.

One community member of the original building committee was upset and spoke out against the 2001 name change.

“It’s appalling what happened.” said Six Nations community member Welby Johnson.

“I’m standing up for the generation of the 60s and 70s. We accomplished something that has never been done before and has never happened since.”

Johnson said, “You see that beautiful arena out there? It was because of our generation. I’m not arguing with anybody i’m just telling you what happened. We should be respected. Joe Montour went to his grave with a big hole in his heart. I imagine all the other committee members went too the same way.”

Elected Councillor Audrey Powless-Bomberry, who is sister to Gaylord spoke saying her father Ross Powless was also a member of the original

building committee and shared his vision that the arena would also house memorial space for all Six Nations athletes, including those who work for the promotion of athletics in the community.

Powless-Bomberry spoke on her family’s behalf saying, “The Powless family are not here to disrespect anybody. They have the highest level of respect for this community. We continue to contribute everyday.”

Powless responded to the claim the arena build was the only time Six Nations residents unified to see a project completed. “I have seen another time when we have all worked together, and that was during the time of asbestos and worked together to get it removed.

We did a boycott, and worked together to see all new schools built. We all came together. It didn’t matter where you lived or who you were. And I think that is what we need to get back to — that type of community spirit, camaraderie and respect for one another,” said Powless-Bomberry.

Another of Gaylord’s daughters, Michelle, was visibly shaken and said the public nature of the campaign to see the memorial designation rescinded along with false accusations on social media were hurtful and embarrassing for the Powless family, alluding that Gaylord had done something disgraceful to warrant his name being removed from the building.

No conclusions were reached by the end of the meeting, but recommendations were made to reconvene in one month, giving the family and original building committee an opportunity to meet privately and find an amicable resolution to the matter.

Rescinding title of GPA not a good idea At Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting a delegation of residents and their supporters approached Six Nations Elected Council, asking them to rescind a memorial designation on the Gaylord Powless Arena.

The reason the delegation said they are making the request was to have the original name restored to the arena so the work they did to build the arena in the first place was acknowledged.

Recognition is not an unreasonable request. But as observers to this really shameful and upsetting situation it’s unbelievably hard to watch.

The family of Gaylord Powless find themselves now cast unfairly into a position to defend him — something they never should have to experience. Representatives with the family say they were not approached prior to the request to rescind the memorial designation and that the concern was thrust into the public sphere without warning.

We’re also talking about men, women and children who now have the very painful experience of fighting a battle they don’t deserve on behalf of their brother, father and friend — who died after a lengthy battle with cancer and a long reputation of community service. Gaylord Powless was an advocate for Six Nations nationally and internationally, deserving of the legacy of his name.

Family members shared letters that have poured in supporting keeping the memorial name — one from another First Nation reserve in Canada saying they would gladly name their arena in Gaylord Powless’ honour if Six Nations does decide to rescind the memorial.

It is unfortunate that after 18 years, the men and women who were originally involved in the construction of the arena

feel they deserve more. It is shocking to hear the language used in their claim. One woman even going so far as to shout out that the memorial designation should be removed from the Powless name by the Elected Council “because that is what you did to us”.

It is ironic that the claim by the original building committee, they are seeking acknowledgement for a work done in unity, is getting lost in the divisive rhetoric of why they want the former name restored.

Some suggesting that the name change in 2001 was an oppressive and insulting wound inflicted upon the original building committee by the Six Nations Elected Council.

It was sad to see the members of the Powless family, crying and holding hands, reliving the trauma of watching a parent succumb to cancer while they are forced to stand up and defend themselves, respond publicly to false rumours and uphold Gaylord’s good name.

They don’t deserve to be fighting that battle. Especially in this day and age, where removing one’s name from a building or statue from a place is associated with a disgraceful legacy.

The original building committee could have asked for a memorial museum to be established at the Sports Complex, or for a bigger, better sign. What about naming an Annual Sports and Memorial Day in honour of the contributions of community members to Six Nations athletics? Suppose a new award ceremony could be established to acknowledge the committee?

But to advocate for the well deserved memorial honour to be rescinded 18 years after it was approved is creating a toxic situation, that is potentially traumatizing for the entire community.

Cultural Open House a huge success!

Jamieson/J.C. Hill School held a parent engagement Cultural Open House on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 from 5:30-7:30 pm. The evening was planned, organized and supported by Jamieson Home & School.

All activities were held at J.C. Hill School. We had over 100 parents, students, staff and community presenters in attendance. Participants chose to attend nine different cultural workshops including Soapstone Carving, Storytelling, Lacrosse, Social Dancing, Yoga, Traditional Medicines, Corn Teachings, Mohawk Language and Beading.

Everyone enjoyed a meal of Cornsoup, Three Sister’s

soup, Scones, Indian Cookies, Donuts and Strawberry juice. We would like to say a special thank you to Michelle Henry and Nicole Florist for the donation to our Traditional Medicines workshop.

Our new cultural room grand opening took place on the same evening. Participants who completed their Cultural passport, the Cultural Scavenger Hunt and subscribed to the school’s Facebook page and Remind Apps were entered into draws for prizes.

“Magnificent Mohawk”: the story of Gaylord Powless

By Jim Windle and Nahnda Garlow As a toddler, Gaylord Powless, was keen with a lacrosse stick. In the book “Lacrosse Warrior: The Life of Mohawk Lacrosse Champion Gaylord Powless”, Gaylord’s father Ross Powless talks about his son’s skill.

It was the dawn of the 1950’s and Ross was playing for a lacrosse team in Huntsville. His young family would travel north to watch Ross play.

"Gaylord and I used to put on a little show for the fans in between the periods," Ross said. "I'd stand with my back to the net and he'd put a little shift on me and go in for the goal. Beat me every time!”

Ross was a lacrosse legend in his own right; he was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1968 and was twice granted the Tom Longboat Award, naming him Canada’s top Indigenous athlete.

Gaylord was the oldest of the 14 children Wilma and Ross Powless had. For the Powless family, the game was more than just a hobby, it was engrained into everyday life.

For indigenous people in Canada in the 1960’s, something else was also a daily truth — being confronted with racism.

coming from white lacrosse players targeting him on the field earned Gaylord a reputation as a hothead.

It was coaching from his father, along with teachings about the traditions of lacrosse, a medicine game to the Haudenosaunee from the Creator, that helped Gaylord overcome those attacks and hone his skills to become one of the greatest lacrosse players of all time.

A CBC biography by David Giddens on Gaylord says this became part of his tough skin strategy: play clean, frustrate opponents straight into a foul and his own team into a power play.

Strategic play combined with a cultural understanding of the roots of the game

took him at the age of 16, to lead the Oshawa Green Gaels to four Canadian Junior A Minto Cup championships from 1963 to 1967 — twice being named MVP. "I think he really enjoyed his junior years the most," his son Chris Powless said of his father at the time.

"He was really glad that he played for the late Mr. Jim Bishop (considered one of greatest lacrosse coaches ever) and the tight-knit group that they had."

From there, it was a trajectory of national championship titles, awards and accolades — earning him the nickname “Marvelous Mohawk” by sports journalists.

“Gaylord was running away from the goal, with his back to it. He had a defender on either shoulder. So the almost-predictable, reverseover-the-shoulder shot was not an option. Instead, Gaylord rifled the ball straight back down between his own feet, where it caromed off the ground and buried top shelf in the net. Even the goalie had to admire that. Almost impossible.”

Powless is featured in the upcoming documentary “THE RULES OF LACROSSE—and the Men Who Break them” by Joanne Storken and Honest Engine Films. In it, hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky tells how much impact

Powless had.

“I watched every Canadian, every North American that played lacrosse in the 60s and 70s,” said Gretzky.

“Gaylord Powless was the greatest lacrosse player I ever saw play. He would do things with the ball and his stick that nobody’s ever done, nobody ever will do. He was just a very unique, special player. His creativity was so over the top. He could throw the ball backwards even better than he could throw the ball forward. And I remember watching him play each and every night idolizing what he brought, and how exciting it was as a young kid to watch him play.”

Gretzky said, “I saw a lot of great players but to me, there was nobody like Gaylord Powless.”

In 1968, at the age of 17 he was recognized as the best First Nations athlete with the Tom Longboat Award. In the same year he was given the National Lacrosse Association's AllStar Award. By 1977, Gaylord had played for squads in Montreal, Detroit, Syracuse, Rochester, Portland, Brantford, Brampton and Coquitlam, B.C.. By 1978, he had won every title known in the world of lacrosse.

He retired and became an active coach and advocate for sports at Six Nations of the Grand River. In 1990, Gaylord was inducted to the Canadian Lacrosse

Hall of Fame, making Ross and Gaylord the first and only father-son duo in it’s legacy.

Powless continued his advocacy and support of local athletes up to his illness with colon cancer and eventual death in 2001.

Days before his passing, community members at Six Nations made the suggestion to the Six Nations Elected Council to rename the Ohsweken Arena in his memory.

Members of Gaylord’s family said he was told about the decision days before his passing and say it was a happy moment during one of the most difficult journeys a family takes — saying goodbye.

On July 28, 2001, Gaylord died after a three year battle with cancer. He was 54 years old.

In 2017, he was named to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. His daughter, Gaylene Powless, accepted the award on behalf of her father and his surviving family — and gave a message to her father’s grandchildren — that the love of the Powless family was paramount to Gaylord’s success and his descendants, his greatest accomplishment.

“As much as your papa would like to have been here and been proud to get this award — he would be more proud of all of you and that you carry on his legacy in your own way.”

Ontario town rejects land acknowledgment An Ontario town has rejected a motion to open all its council meetings with an acknowledgment that the proceedings are taking place on lands held by Canada's Indigenous people.

A councillor in the town of Richmond Hill, Ont., first tabled the idea at a meeting in February, only to encounter pushback from councillors and see the motion deferred to a later date.

This week, when the motion came up for debate once again, dozens of residents of the town north of Toronto voiced support for the idea of showing respect to Indigenous people by acknowledging that they were the first occupiers of the land on which the town now stands.

But another councillor tabled an amendment to the land acknowledgment motion, essentially scrapping it and replacing it with a proposal to offer training on Indigenous issues to city staff.

That amendment passed, leaving local supporters shouting angrily at council members.

Coun. David West, who tabled the original land acknowledgment motion, said Wednesday that the vote represented a shameful moment for the town. ``I'm remarkably disappointed,'' West said in a telephone interview. ``Sometimes governments are not the organizations that lead.

Sometimes we lead the parade from behind, and this might be one of those cases.

The people are leading us.''

West said land acknowledgments are becoming increasingly common, citing politicians at the federal, provincial and municipal level who open formal proceedings with such measures.

He said the effort to acknowledge Indigenous territory is a direct offshoot of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the broader effort to make Canada reckon with its historical treatment of Indigenous people.

The motion he put forward on Feb. 11 addressed the reasons behind his proposal.

hoped to see read before all future council meetings included an acknowledgment that participants were gathered on the ``traditional territories of the Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishinaabe peoples, whose presence here continues to this day.'' ``We acknowledge this land and people because the first step to reconciliation is recognizing the existence of Indigenous people,'' the motion read. ``A shared understanding of how our collective past brought us to where we are today will help us walk together into a better future.''

But deputy mayor Joe DiPaola voiced opposition to the motion, saying it put too much emphasis on one demographic. ``I think we're treading down a course of political correctness that's going to be difficult to rein in,'' he said at the meeting. ``There's no acknowledgment of the Portuguese, the Italian community, the Chinese community, the Iranian community _ all the groups that coexist here in harmony.''

Landmark ruling defends press freedom and coverage of Indigenous issues ST. JOHN’S — Newfoundland and Labrador's top court has defended the importance of press freedom in a landmark decision in the high-profile case of a journalist charged with contempt of a court-ordered injunction.

Justice Derek Green vacated an injunction he found was improperly applied to journalist Justin Brake, overturning a provincial Supreme Court finding that Brake's status as a working journalist was not material to the case.

development site as part of a demonstration against the possible contamination of fish and other wild foods once the land was flooded for a reservoir.

In a ruling Thursday, Green found that Brake's actions did not fall within the scope of the injunction.

He said Brake had established himself as a journalist who was reporting on events rather than actively participating, and dismissed the contempt charge against him. ``To make Mr. Brake subject to a general 'no trespass' prohibition' would unduly and unnecessarily interfere with his function as a journalist when he was not a participant in the ongoing protests,'' the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal judge wrote. ``Mr. Brake's trespassing was contingent on the continuation of the protest.

If it dissipated, so would his trespassing have evaporated.''

Green's decision quoted an affidavit written by Karyn Pugliese, executive news director of the Aboriginal People's Network (APTN), an intervener in the case and Brake's current employer. ``In my experience ... it is in the public interest to have up-close, independent coverage of Aboriginal-led protests over Crown resources projects,'' Pugliese wrote. ``Mr. Brake was providing this kind of coverage.

But this coverage is threatened if journalists are faced with possible criminal or contempt charges for accessing protest sites.''

Green noted he agreed with Pugliese on the role of the media in advancing reconciliation and understanding of Aboriginal people and issues. ``The evidence from APTN, which I accept, is that Aboriginal communities have been historically underrepresented in the Canadian media,'' Green wrote. ``That makes freedom of the press to cover stories involving Indigenous land issues even more vital.''

He also outlined a number of ``non-exhaus-

tive'' considerations for courts and other parties when determining whether a journalist covering a protest should be included in an ex parte injunction order.

The considerations included considering whether the person is engaged in good faith journalistic coverage, is not actively assisting the protesters, is not interfering with law enforcement and if the matters being reported on are of public interest.

Green noted that ``particular consideration should be given to protests involving Aboriginal issues.''

Green decided the previous judge had erred by not considering Brake's role as a journalist to be a material fact. He vacated the injunction and contempt notices and ruled Brake was entitled to his costs against the respondents.

Allison Conway, one of Brake's lawyers, said the decision leaves the civil matter ``all but concluded,'' though Crown corporation Nalcor Energy could still take the case to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Brake is also facing criminal charges of mischief and disobeying a court order and will appear in court in April. Conway said she expects the civil ruling could impact the criminal procedure.

Conway called the judge's decision ``hugely significant'' for journalists in Canada and for its legal recognition of the media's role in advancing reconciliation. ``It enshrines again the importance of journalism and the role of journalists, but also it's not just that he was covering news, it's the news that he was covering, the fact that it was an Aboriginal land protest,'' she said. ``Justin of course is pleased, as are we on his behalf, and I think this is a big decision for working journalists in Canada.''

Alaska Native servicemen finally honoured as Code Talkers ANCHORAGE — Army veteran Richard Bean Sr. died without anyone knowing that he and four other long-deceased Alaska Natives had used their Tlingit language to outsmart the Japanese during World War II. Now, they are finally being hailed in their home state for their lifesaving efforts as servicemen.

Earlier this month, legislators passed a formal citation honouring the Tlingit Code Talkers. State flags were flown at halfstaff and later presented to the men's families.

Bean and the others

had been forbidden to speak Tlingit as schoolchildren in their southeast Alaska villages. Later, they used it to provide the military with unbreakable codes, as did their more well-known peers, Navajo Code Talkers.

The language of the Alaska Natives had been suppressed by missionaries and teachers trying to ``civilize'' them, said Rosita Worl, president of the Sealaska Heritage Institute. The Juneau non-profit works to preserve and enhance the cultures of southeast Alaska's Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian

tribes.

Punishments for students who spoke Tlingit included having their mouths washed out with soap and their hands struck with rulers, Worl said. ``We're finally ecstatic that there is this recognition that our people served this country, even served this country that wasn't always good to them,'' she said.

Sheakley, an Army veteran and Tlingit leader, said about the five Alaska Natives. ``They took those orders seriously.''

Even their closest relatives had no clue about the wartime endeavours of Richard Bean Sr. of Hoonah and Robert ``Jeff'' David Sr. of Haines; Sitka brothers and Navy men Mark Jacobs Jr. and Harvey Jacobs; and Sitka resident George Lewis Jr., who served in the Army.

Bean's wife died before Congress posthumously recognized the men. His 85-year-old nephew, Ron Williams, never knew either, even though the two were close.

Williams said there was only one hint. His uncle told him a platoon leader had overheard him speaking Tlingit with Jeff David while the two served together in the Philippines. They were in the same company but different platoons.

Sheakley, commander of the Southeast Alaska Native Veterans, got a call from Department of Defence officials.

They told him the five Alaskans had been identified as Code Talkers from the Tlingit tribe, along with others from 32 Lower-48 tribes. Soon they would get the recognition long afforded the Navajos, who made up the largest group of Code Talkers.

In 2013, Congress recognized the Code Talkers, who were posthumously awarded silver medals.

Sheakley also received a Congressional Gold Medal on behalf of the entire Tlingit tribe.

Alaska state Rep. and Tlingit Vietnam veteran Bill Thomas thought state recognition would soon follow. ``I just waited and waited and waited,'' Thomas said. ``I finally said, 'Hey, it's time to pay tribute to these men.'''

State lawmakers agreed after Thomas and the Sealaska Heritage Institute pushed the idea.

The role the men played in history was a stunning discovery for the family of George Lewis Jr. His son, Ray Lewis, was born after the war and never knew his father was in the military. ``I'm very proud of it,'' Ray Lewis said of the new recognition. ``My father was instrumental in saving a lot of lives out there.''

Potential Trans Mountain pipeline buyer says it agrees with feds CALGARY — A First Nations consortium planning to offer $6.8 billion for majority ownership of the Trans Mountain pipeline and its expansion is welcoming federal government principles for Indigenous buyers announced Monday.

The government's continued endorsement of Indigenous ownership is ``fantastic news,'' said Shane Gottfriedson, director for British Columbia for the group calling itself Project Reconciliation.

``This is one hell of an opportunity for all of our First Nations to look at our own reconciliation through this pipeline and build unity among many of our nations,'' added the Kamloops resident, who is a former chief of the Tk'Emlups te Secwepemc First Nation and a former B.C. regional chief for the Assembly of First Nations.

Several First Nations have indicated they are interested in buying a stake in the pipeline as an investment to promote

their economic well-being but its construction is strongly opposed by many others, particularly in B.C., who fear its environmental risks.

OTTAWA - Liberals are hoping to cauterize the SNC-Lavalin affair with the expulsions of Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott from the governing party's fold.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced late Tuesday at a hastily called caucus meeting that he had informed the two former cabinet ministers he was kicking them out of the Liberal caucus and will not allow them to run as Liberal candidates in this fall's election. ``The trust that previously existed between these two individuals and our team has been broken,'' he told Liberal MPs. ``Whether it's taping conversations without consent or repeatedly expressing a lack of confidence in our government and in me personally as leader, it's become clear that Ms. Wilson-Raybould and Dr. Philpott can no longer remain part of our Liberal team.''

The SNC-Lavalin affair has engulfed the government for nearly two months and cost Trudeau his lead in public opinion polls; his most trusted adviser, Gerald Butts; and the country's top public servant, Michael Wernick _ in addition to the two former ministers who had symbolized his commitment to gender equality and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

Liberals are now hoping the worst is over and they can finally move on to the agenda they hope will get them re-elected.

Trudeau said the Liberals won the 2015 election ``because we stood together as a team,'' whereas ``the old Liberal party was notorious for infighting.'' ``Civil wars within parties are incredibly damaging because they signal to Canadians that we care more about ourselves than about them. That's why I made the difficult decision to remove Ms. Wilson-Raybould and Dr. Philpott from the Liberal caucus.''

Trudeau's announcement followed a day of meetings with the chairs of the various Liberal regional caucuses and discussions with MPs. The party's largest group, the Ontario caucus, met for 90 minutes earlier in the day to discuss the fates of the two former ministers.

Philpott, who represents a Toronto-area riding, showed up for that meeting but left after less than 10 minutes. Wilson-Raybould, meanwhile, sent a letter to all Liberal MPs making an 11th-hour pitch for staying in caucus but making no apologies for going public with her contention that she was improperly pressured last fall to stop the criminal prosecution of Montreal engineering giant SNC-Lavalin.

Buffy Sainte-Marie inducted into Hall of Fame STAFF REPORT

TORONTO — On April 1, 2019 Cree singer, songwriter, educator AND social activist Buffy Sainte-Marie was inducted into the Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame at the SOCAN Awards in Toronto.

She has been inducted among other notables including Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell and Rush. But this is not Sainte-Marie’s first recognition by the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, as her song “Universal Soldier,” was inducted in 2005.

The song was written in 1963 and is notable for having been covered most memorably by The Highwaymen, Donovan and the Scruggs. The song, about the individual responsibilities of people and soldiers to engage in war, was written after hearing rumours that American advisors were involved in combat.

Although popular and widely covered, it’s certainly not Sainte-Marie’s only claim to musical fame. Other songs have also garnered some significant attention, “Until It’s Time for You to Go,” being covered by Elvis Presley, her “Up Where We Belong,” winning an Academy Award in 1982 for Best Original Song, and her album Illuminations being a pioneering work in electronic and synthesized music.

Indigenous Artists boycott IMA

Tanya Tagaq, Kelly Fraser and Iva are among the musicians who posted to social media pledging not to participate in the awards until the organization revises its policies or includes Inuit representation on its board.

The throat-singing duo PIQSIQ, comprised of Inuksuk Mackay and

Tiffany Ayalik, announced on Twitter Monday they are withdrawing the nomination of ``Altering The Timeline'' for best electronic music album.

The Yellowknife-raised sisters said in an interview their decision was spurred by the IMA's nomination of a non-Inuit artist who performs throat singing, which they view as an ``insensitive'' appropriation of their culture.

SIX NATIONS — After displaying the current prospective talents that are lined up to play for the Rebels last week during their inter-squad match, the Rebels hosted a Spring Showcase that brought five surrounding teams to the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena on Saturday.

The Hamilton Bengals, St. Catharines Spartans, Brampton Excelsiors, Windsor Clippers and Wilmont Wild joined in a day of matches that allowed the teams to try out combinations of players and switch up their prospective goalies to see them in action.

For the home team, the Rebels lost out on their early first game versus the Hamilton Bengals 5-3, but regained their footing by defeating the Brampton Excelsiors 11-1 shortly after noon.

This opened the third period with Rebels in the lead 6-3 and 30 seconds in, M. Powless scored his second from Wesley Whitlow. But Rebels defence seemed a bit off as shots from the Clippers started to trickle in with two buries within minutes.

Undeterred, M. Powless caused a turn over and scored on a break away for a hat trick, unassisted.

The Clippers answered with a quick one of their own, but S. Powless scored again for his own hat trick with passes from Jarrod Martin and M. Powless. The Clippers closed the scoring with a minute left, finalizing the game as a closer 9-7 for the Rebels.

Coming up, the Rebels will host their home opener on Friday, April 12, at 8p.m., at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena with a definitive roster.

Sweden makes call for Six Nations players

By TRT Staff Sweden Box Lacrosse made an announcement to their Facebook page on Monday, April 1, that explained a loop hole in their applicant qualifications.

The page wrote: “Due to an error in translation found in the 1977 Swedish Riksdag’s recognition of the Sami as an indigenous people, Sweden’s National Box Lacrosse Team is now accepting applications from Native Americans.

The error results in the Swedish Riksdag recognizing ALL indigenous people worldwide as native to Sweden.

Because of the loophole created by the law, Sweden Box Lacrosse is looking forward to receiving World Cup National Team applications from players from Onondaga, Six Nations, and other areas in upstate NY and Canada. Prior MSL or NLL experience preferred, but not necessary.

Interested players can download and send the application online.

The Sami of Sweden are recognized by the United Nations as an indigenous people after living in the Arctic for thousands of years, which has given them the right to preserve and develop their crafts, language, education, reindeer husbandry, traditions and identity while being a part of modern Swedish society.

The announcement for try out dates came to Facebook on Wednesday, March 13, from the Team First Nations Minor Lacrosse Association to inform Haudensaunee lacrosse families of the box nationals for coaching and tryout camps.

Teams will be participating in the Canadian National Championships this coming summer in Coquitlam, British Columbia and divisions looking for young athletes include Peewee, Bantam and Midget.

There are to be 3 tryout dates and each player must attend 2 out of 3 to be eligible. The tryout fee has been set at $60.

The ILW will advocate and help indigenous people navigate court services who are attending family and criminal court in Brantford, Cayuga and Hamilton.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS  Bachelor’s degree in criminology, social work, psychology with two (2) years’ experience, OR completion of an accredited college diploma in criminology, social work or psychology with 3-10 years of experience in the justice or a related field.  Preferably three years’ experience working in Six Nations Community.  Proven ability working with social agencies from Six Nations or other First Nations; as well as social agencies of surrounding communities.  Has demonstrated experience working at Six Nations or in a First Nations community.  Has experience conducting intakes and interviews for program eligibility.  High Level of Communication Skills: Interoffice, Telephone, and Written.  High Level of Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point and Publisher  High level of office and interpersonal communication skills  Strong level of organizational skills.  Must be a team oriented player.  Has a valid G license.

Peacefully at home on Thursday, March 28, 2019 in her 95th year.

Wife of the late David Nelson Moses. Loving mother of Daniel David Moses, and Debora Blanche Moses. Dear sister of Eleanor & Elliott, Barbara & Douglas, and Deanna & the late James.

Also survived by several nieces & nephews.

Predeceased by parents George & Minnie Jamieson; siblings Darliene, Ted, Irvine, and Hannah. Blanche & her husband David celebrated over 60 years of marriage. Her happiest memories were the birth of their children Daniel and Debora. Blanche worked as a RNA at the Lady Willingdon Hospital and later at Brantford General Hospital. She was a director and exhibitor for the Six Nations Agricultural Society, and a member of the Red Hats. She volunteered extensively for Iroquois Lodge and St. Peter’s Anglican Church. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 1631 Chiefswood Rd., Ohsweken on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 11 am. Burial in adjoining cemetery and luncheon gathering in parish hall to follow. In honour of Mrs. Moses donations may be made to St. Peter’s Anglican or the charity of your choice. www.rhbanderson.com
