Bail hearing for McIntyre continues this week New online Loom “scam”

BRANTFORD – Four Six Nations youth were victims of a series of illegalities that began earlier this month with Brantford resident Jennifer McIntyre facing a string of charges.

The four teens were each allegedly approached and threatened individually at knife point

by a group of four men — two native and two non-native — and McIntyre; with one 17-yearold being kidnapped and driven throughout Six Nations and Brantford in search of a 15-yearold who was later beaten and found at the Ohsweken Plaza early Monday morning.

Brantford court documents show that McIn-

tyre has been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, three counts of assault with a weapon, uttering threats, kidnapping, breaking and entering with contempt, two counts of forcible confinement and robbery.

It has been speculated that the motivation for these accounts may have been in relation to allegations against two

Final submissions were made on September 18, 2017. Andrew Furgiuele, defence attorney for Monture and Green said that the two men should be acquitted of any charges because they were acting under their traditional system, and if the federal government is to honour all indigenous traditions, then this act of removal,

or, banishment from the territory should be also.

Ed Slater, assistant crown attorney submitted that the Criminal Code of Canada should apply on Six Nations.

“The idea that the Criminal Code does not apply there is incompatible with the sovereignty of Canada,” he said.

Slater also submitted that the removal by the Men’s Fire was a “senseless act” and that it was intended to embarrass and humiliate Detlor. Detlor said in court several weeks ago that he was indeed embarrassed by

Six Nations teens that were allegedly invited to a Brantford home where jewelry went missing.

The identities of the four other men beyond Jay LaForme/Parker have not been released.

McIntyre's bail court hearing proceeded on Friday, September 15, and is set to continue on Wednesday September 20.

Monture and Green await decision

ONLINE – One of the newest schemes Facebook users are being advised to steer clear of is a “blessing loom” pyramid scheme.

To take part in the loom, Facebook users have to deposit $100 into a PayPal account and are promised more than $800 if they can recruit two others to do the same. The alleged

scheme also has users giving pitches on how they were paid without concrete facts, and many simply strike out.

The consequences may not only be monetary loss; however, as Facebook's terms of service states that participating in “unlawful multi-level marketing, such as a pyramid scheme” may result in account termination if users are caught.

Drunk driver arrested at Beer Store parking lot BRANTFORD — A woman was arrested by Brantford police after being found drunk in the driver’s seat of her car.

Police say residents reported a suspected impaired driver in the area of Chatham Street driving a dark coloured four door Nissan.

Community Patrol Officers attended the area and found the vehicle parked at the Beer Store on Murray Street. The driver was believed to

be intoxicated and the vehicle was still running.

A 49 year old Brantford woman was arrested and charged with driving while impaired.

Breath samples showed the woman had two times the legal limit.

The vehicle was impounded, and the woman’s drivers license suspended. She was released on a promise to appear.

Golfers generate $20,000 for Miles-to-Go Cancer Support Group

By Jim Windle RENTON – A fundraising golf tournament for cancer awareness in the memory of Six Nations’ Andrea Skye, who succumbed to cancer two months ago, was held at the Greens at Renton Golf Club last weekend.

Don Skye, Andrea’s father, spoke for the rest of the family when he thanked the participants of the Andrea Skye Memorial Golf Tournament and those who helped organize the event.

“What a great turnout,” said Skye. “I didn’t know if we would get half this number.”

Co-owner of the Greens at Renton and a sponsor of the event, Steve Williams, was also blown away by the turnout and enthusiasm of the golfers. “It was a great day for the Skye family and for the Miles to Go Support Group,” he said. “We had to turn golfers away after all the spots were filled.”

In total there were 185 golfers and 25 volunteers who made it such a success in raising an estimated $20,000 for Six Nation Miles-to-Go Cancer Support Group, a local group of volunteers, made up of cancer survivors and the families and friends of cancer victims who support each other and to do what they can to help

After that, Terry Hill was presented with a $20,000 cheque to go towards the work the Miles-to-Go group does for Six Nations patients.

The amount of the cheque was not disclosed until the presentation and Hill, in particular, was overwhelmed with the generosity shown.

“I have lost a lot of good friends along the way,” Carrie Hill said. “Far too many. But this is one awesome check. What we do in our group is help families deal with what they have to deal with and make their journey a little lighter. This donation will be well used.”

The group was initially formed on April 8th, of 1998.

Brantford home sales come in just two sales below last year’s August record

By TRT staff BRANTFORD – The number of homes sold through the MLS System of the Brantford Regional Real Estate Association came in almost on par with record year-ago levels in August 2017.

According to statistics reported by the Association, residential property sales numbered 219 units in August. This was down just 0.9 per cent (two sales) from the record August in 2016.

On a year-to-date basis, home sales totalled 1,820 units over the first eight months of the year.

This was a record for the period, up 4.4 per cent from 2016.

“Home sales in the region have come off peak in recent months, but they are still doing quite well by historical standards, with August sales almost hitting a record for that month,” said Shelly Gracey, 2017 president of the Brantford Regional Real Estate Association.

“Meanwhile, after an initial jump back in May and June, new supply has pulled back noticeably over the last two months.

That has caused market conditions to start to tighten up again.”

The average price of homes sold in August 2017 was $388,757. This was up eight per cent on a year-over-year basis.

The year-to-date average price was $406,453, rising 22 per cent from the first eight months of 2016.

Tricyle race and parade for charity TWO ROW TIMES

By Dan Matton On Friday September 8, 2017 we were taking part in the Cayuga Tricycle Race and Service Club Parade put on by Haldimand Motors.

We met at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon to fix a few technical 'bugs' with the mast and to plan the decorating.

I arrived in sunshine, but during the work it rained quite a bit — never the less, we got the work done.

At 5 p.m. we arrived in Cayuga and started decorating the 'Boat Float' in the '150 Canada' theme

just as the sun came out again.

Lion Chief Mark Dennis got us a special banner that says: “We serve from Sea to shining Sea” and underneath it reads: “Happy Birthday Canada” with a flag at the end.

Our ship's mast is a bit high and were cleared the overhead wires and steel entrance to the car lot with only an inch to spare — so we decided to shorten it for future events.

We passed the judges and had a good response by the crowd and the judges. Also we didn't rank in the top three/four we still had a lot of fun.

Our tricycle racer Lorna from A1 did very well and came in second in both heats. But only the first of every heat went on the next round.

Despite the fact that we did not ring in the top four, for partaking in the parade and in the tricycle race we will receive a generous donation of $600 from Haldimand Motors.

OPINION WORDS ON PAPER EDITORIAL BY CHEZNEY MARTIN

When you pick up a copy of our paper, the cover usually lets you jump right into the most important thing that happened in either our community or Indian Country.

You then get to flip through the pages and give life to the images and words that carry the stories of our community and Indian Country. At times the stories can bring you pride and joy, sadness or remorse, and anger. They can even incite emotions you didn't know you had.

This is the power of pen and paper, and you as a reader get to experience this in the rawest of forms.

But, what you do not see in our paper is the empty coffee cups, the uncharged batteries and full memory sticks. You probably won't see a photographer fighting to get to the front of a scrum to get a good photo of whoever it is that's posing. You may not ever even think about the edits made to a written piece or how many eyes read it before you did.

You might think “wow that's a good shot,” when you see one of our photos, but you won't know how long we waited with the right shutter speed and exposure to capture it.

You might think “hey there's a sale nearby,” when you view an ad, but you won't know who designed it in such a way that made it pop out when you seen it.

All of us in this work place were once in your shoes. We could look at things in media without thinking about

the people behind it — the only time we'd care to check the bylines is when it was something we didn't agree with or we didn't like. And that was easy.

So, now that we are behind the scenes we feel the weight of what we're doing.

We try to provide content that allows our readers to be informed and knowledgeable. We try to provide content that Onkwehon:we people can identify with, be it positive or negative, and at the same time we also try to educate those around us that are not Onkwehon:we.

We also write to share collective knowledge, be it historical or traditional.

In saying this — systemically languages were nearly taken and with it voices were quieted, but were never silenced. This paper is an outlet for voices to be loud again and to have stories told.

But sometimes, we're like invisible warriors going out into the world to find stories worth telling. And just like snipers in the night, the only time we're seen is when we make a mistake. That is the payment we must pay to be a part of this industry and it has made our voices stronger because of it.

In other words; you as a reader have made us stronger and made us want to do our work justice and with purpose.

So, nia:wen.

Green cracks in concrete

By Quinn Staats Blink your eyes if you are perfect.

Did you blink? If you did, you probably think your bwoot don’t stink, either.

But for some of you, I'm going to consider that maybe you didn't blink on purpose. As for me, I mess up all the time or do things on accident, even in my “wise old” 26 years. And when I do mess up, I like to take a long walk to sit somewhere private and quiet in nature to reflect on my actions — no distractions.

Today, I went for a very, very, very, long walk.

I strolled my way down a paved trail by my house that winds through a sparse manmade “forest”. A nature spot nonetheless, it was my best option at a moment's notice.

I walked in the warm, late summer sunshine, soaking up every bit I could of the pure energy around me. I instantly feel better when I go outside, like I can properly breath — maybe you've had this feeling a time or two. It was almost as if I were being

detoxified or baptized from my mistakes by Mother Nature herself. I felt the kiss of my ancestors in the breeze on my cheek, telling me to direct myself, once again, back to the Red Road.

I envisioned the long, paved path ahead of me as my own personal journey: my own Red Path. In the pavement, there were splits and cracks through the packed-in, tiny rocks. These cracks lead through the entire length of the path, back to where it met again with suburban sidewalk.

I started stepping over all the cracks, reminiscing in a game I played as a child walk-

ing to and from school.

“Step on a crack and you’ll break your mother's back!”

If not familiar with this game, I'm sure the object of it is pretty clear.

As I tippy-toed over and around the cracks, I realized that there was grass and weeds growing inside of every scarred crevice. The natural world, retained by a supposedly solid, man-made foundation, had managed to crawl its way into every split in the path I was walking on.

These cracks looked like wounds from countless seasons of harsh weather, yet through them grew life. Within

them grew something more beautiful; leaked in from the outside, holding the entire path together as one with the ground — in a vine of subservient constant change and growth.

The bounty from which these ‘green cracks’ came from sat a step to either side of me.

Still, somehow I found a little more wonderment in the weeds that were growing in the scars.

On my way home, I made extra careful not to step on the cracks filled with fragile greenery, in a new appreciation. Besides, you never know about the whole ‘break your mother’s back’ thing ...

Current Indigenous Battles are to Protect Both Sides Battling

By Rachel A. Snow The original people of this land moved or settled in particular areas with specific reasons. Some nations moved, some stayed closer to settled lifestyles. The common understanding between the original nations has been to live “with the land”.

This concept of “living with the land” is advanced in that the original people understood the interrelatedness of all things and the necessity to maintain balance.

Maintaining this balance ensures not only the survival of the land, waters, plants and animals but leads to life for all human being as well.

This is why the original people or very few tribes have no concept of property or ownership of land. In order to maintain balance, it was necessary to take “only enough”.

Many original people see accumulating or greed as wrong. Various nations established ceremonial processes such as the give away for two purposes. One purpose was to distribute items without causing shame so that a clan, tribe or people would have “enough”.

A second purpose was to establish honour or pres-

tige. Those that accumulated or gave away were deeply respected. The giving to all showed the concern for the community was greater than the individual or family.

Can this worldview be equated to values in today’s society?

No. Many settlers and colonial people thought it showed weakness or stupidity when the original people freely shared of their food, lodgings and teachings. The original people were applying their laws. The original people were respecting the settler newcomers as fellow human beings. The original people also understood the importance of territorial agreements.

Sacred sites or specific territories might need to be accessed by all but if there was an area used for hunting or harvesting, it was necessary to engage with other nations to establish peaceful laws and interaction. Therefore, the original people viewed the newcomers as their relations. They believed that an agreement to share the land and resources would be respected by the newcomers because the spoken words had gone into the cosmos. Creator had heard.

The original people had no understanding that the taking of land meant that another group could willfully hurt, ruin or destroy an area that was for all people, plants and animals’ usage. The original people did not understand this “ownership” but they did understand that using the land and resources responsibly would ensure the survival of all.

If we fast-forward 500 years later to this current time, we begin to see the repercussions of this short sightedness.

The original nations flourished for thousands of years, living with an understanding of the true and sacred laws that exist on this planet. The laws of nature apply to all creatures. Human beings are not exempted from this law.

Currently in North America, the original people are preparing for battles. The battle is not for an ideology or to take over a territory or to correct some mainstream wrong. This battle is to protect both sides who, are battling.

The original people have tried to live and respect the newcomers but the ways of the newcomers directly contradict our teachings and re-

sponsibilities.

If an original teaching is to share, our people have done this.

If an original teaching is to respect others, our people have done this.

If an original teaching is to protect the land, waters and animals, our people are trying to do this.

In current Mainstream case law, and governance or policy structures throughout North America, resource and economic development are shaping “society”. Therefore, decisions are not based on what is right for the land, plants or animals.

Decisions are made based on what is right for a select group of society.

In the original people’s approach, there was a respectful approach to taking or using resources.

However, it was unfathomable to the original people that the newcomers would not have this same understanding.

Here, again, we see the reconciliation breakdown. Ownership and all this entails form a significant body of law for the newcomers. Property is seen as wealth or the way to equalization for all societal members. The original people see continued existence as wealth or the purpose of life.

Numerous categorizations have been made about the original people and their primitive ways that are without “progress”. What is progress if it destroys the land and waters?

What is progress if a handful of people have monetary wealth at the cost of the land, climate and water?

Right now, wildfires are threatening human beings throughout the planet. Other natural phenomena such as hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes are beginning to wreak havoc on the planet. There is imbalance in the world.

Original people have held long teachings, prophecies and warnings about this time. The survival of all people now depends on heeding these teachings, prophecies and warnings.

Weekly there are reports in mainstream media of tainted water, elevated levels of sickness among the original people and disease clusters that show that those people living close to the land are suffering. The original people who have maintained contact, harvesting, hunting and traditional lifestyles are the first indication that the planet is hurting.

Weekly there are also counter reports of the original people taking a stand against further land, water, plant and animal degradation. This stance is not only exercising stewardship, this stance is upholding the ancient law that has always existed.

The original people feel so strongly about this threat that they have expended what scant funding they have to fight this onslaught in the oppressor’s court systems. It is frustrating to know that the original people are fighting for planetary survival and the tainted manmade legal system only sees limited “rights” that can be infringed when justified.

Is it justifiable to allow one segment of society to plunder the land that is responsible for clean air, drinkable water and manageable climate for all species’ survival?

Is it not more justifiable to learn from the older brother on this island about protecting the air, water and climate for all?

Canada stands on this precipice. It can continue to attack the original people or after five hundred years, the newcomers can finally, finally learn the lessons and teachings they came to receive.

Ancient Tuscarora remedies Disclaimer An American botanist, J. N. H. Hewitt, interviewed a Tuscarora medicine man in 1888, asking for some of his healing remedies. The following are from notes he made and are housed in the Bureau of American Ethnology.

Black Jaundice – For Black Jaundice (caused by a build-up of bilirubin in the blood and body

tissue. That build-up is often due to conditions affecting the liver, such as cirrhosis, hepatitis or gallstones.) One stock of common Yarro, Achillea Millefolium may be plucked up, both stock and root are used. These must be bruised as for a fomentation (a poultice) and put into a bundle by tying and then the juice from them thoroughly squeezed out into about one pint of water. This must be drunk until relief comes from the use.

By TRT staff The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, led by Justice Murray Sinclair, issued 94 calls to action that all people, Indigenous and non-Indigenous — can work together to heal the wounds created through Canada’s relationship with First Nations People.

The journey of healing these wounds however, at least initially, becomes largely a personal journey. The changes that are necessary to effect real change can only come from individual efforts to ‘rethink’ many of the

historical, cultural and racial assumptions that we all carry. This is often referenced as a process of decolonization, which we will be exploring from various angles in the coming winter’s program.

In towns throughout Ontario, there are Colonization Roads that carried 19th century settlers to new lands but today stand as startling reminders of the colonization of Indigenous territories of First Nations People.

In the award-winning

film “Colonization Road”, Anishinaabe comedian and activist Ryan McMahon takes us to his hometown of Fort Frances and other Ontario communities with colonization roads. He explores the history of these roads, meets with settler in solidarity and raises significant questions about “reconciliation” and what it means to “decolonize”.

Grand Opening of new Tim Hortons

By Chezney Martin SIX NATIONS – The newest addition to the Six Nations business line-up is yet another Tim Hortons location conveniently placed along Highway 54.

The grand opening of the drive-thru focused location attracted a crowd with free draws, food samples, giveaways and a live band performance

by Faron Johns Band and special guest Murray Porter on Monday, September 18.

But the benefits of the establishment have reached beyond the grand opening.

“We have created 24 more jobs for our community,” said Owner Landon Miller. “A lot of youth come through here and we had at least four or five that were 16 and under that had their first job here.”

In other words, the establishment is working to give back the support the community has given, including support to young athletes.

“We're starting to roll out all of our programs now through the Tim Hortons franchises,” he said. “Our Timbits Hockey is starting this year, our Timbits lacrosse is starting next year and so is our Timbits baseball.

Those are things that will

continue for as long as we're here.”

The Timbits Lacrosse may also be the first of its kind in Canada. But not only will young athletes receive support; the Six Nations Tim Hortons donated all proceeds of the smile cookie program to the Everlasting Tree School to help support the continuation of Haudenosaunee languages.

Chief Ava Hill noted that the establishment certainly has benefited many.

“It's done a lot for our community,” said Hill.

“We know that it's created a lot of employment and it's going to create more employment.”

“I think that over the summer it really helped a lot of the young people with summer employment, so we're really grateful for that because that's what we want. We want our young people to get employed and spend time in our community,” she said.

It is hoped that soon the same success within Ohsweken will continue for the new location.

“The success in Ohsweken has been phenomenal so this was like the next step in what we wanted to do here,” said Miller. “The support from the community has been great.”

Laurier to celebrate young area writers

By TRT staff Brantford – Young writers have a chance to win one of the largest cash prizes offered exclusively for creative fiction produced by high school students thanks to the Laurier Stedman Prize.

Launched Sept. 18 at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus, the Laurier Stedman Prize is open to students living and studying within the geographic boundaries of the Grand Erie and Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District school boards.

The prize is funded through an endowment and estate gift from Miss Mary Stedman. A great supporter of the university, Stedman passed away in 2014.

She entrusted the university with the task of determining how to best use the funds.

“Mary Stedman has given us the privilege and the responsibility of using this gift in a way that benefits the community and promotes learning,” said

Deborah MacLatchy, Laurier’s president and vice-chancellor.

“We are proud to honour her legacy in a way that celebrates the arts, recognizes talented youth, and builds upon the university-community connections that are integral to this campus.”

The English program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Laurier’s Brantford campus will administer the competition.

Faculty co-ordinator Ken Paradis is liaising with local high schools to share details on how students can participate. The deadline for entries is December 8, 2017. Winners will be announced at a special celebration in early February.

A total of $10,000 will be awarded to the top winners. There will be one first-place prize of $3,000; two second-place prizes of $2,000 each; and three third-place prizes of $1,000 each.

“Well-crafted stories possess incredible power,” said Heidi North-

wood, dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts. “Any of us who has read a great work of fiction knows the sense of transformation that can come from reading. The Laurier Stedman Prize celebrates the up-and-coming storytellers among us. It recognizes those with a gift for using language to make us think, feel, question, consider and reconsider.”

The competition is open exclusively to high school students who live and study within the geographic footprint of the Grand Erie and Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District school boards, including the W. Ross MacDonald School, Six Nations Polytechnic STEAM Academy, the Kawenni:io/Gaweni:yo Mohawk and Cayuga immersion school and others.

Submissions are to be original, unpublished works of fiction, up to 1,500 words in length.

Study: Opioid poisonings brought increased numbers to ER OTTAWA — A new study says opioid poisonings have increased nearly 30% in Ontario in the last ten years.

That year there were nearly 5000 hospitalizations in Canada due to opioid poisoning — that rate is up from a 2007 study that saw about 3300.

Researchers say the current numbers means an average of about 13 hospitalizations a day take place across Canada

due to opioid poisonings.

Increases were the same across all age groups however seniors reported the greatest increase.

Seniors accounted for nearly a quarter of hospitalizations for opioid poisoning in 2014–2015, even though this age group represents only 16% of the Canadian population.

Half of the cases in the study were reported as accidental poisonings.

WAYNE, NJ — ToysR-Us has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States and says it intends to follow suit in Canada.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late Monday and says it will file in Canada in the coming days.

An official release from

the retail giant says it has secured $3 billion in financing to stay open while it restructures.

Officials for the company say it will be business as usual for its 1600 stores around the world.

Toys-R-Us has nearly 65,000 employees worldwide.

Indigenous traditions recognized on the Canada 150 bank note

By TRT staff The Canada 150 bank note celebrates Confederation with a unique design depicting Canada’s history, land and culture, which includes several elements of Indigenous traditions and culture.

In addition to the portrait of Senator James Gladstone, who represents the role of Indigenous peoples in government, the Canada 150 note incorporates the artwork Owl’s Bouquet by acclaimed Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak and the distinctive Assomption sash, an important cultural symbol of the Métis people.

James Gladstone or Akay-na-muka (his Blackfoot name) was a member of the Kainai First Nation (Blood Tribe). In 1958, he became Canada’s first senator of First Nations origin. He is also the first Indigenous person in Canada to appear as a portrait subject on a Bank of Canada note.

Gladstone committed himself to the betterment of Indigenous peoples. At

He advocated for this right, which was won in 1960, when the right to vote was extended to all Indigenous Canadians. He also advocated for improved education, economic opportunities, equality and greater self-determination for Canada’s Indige-

nous peoples.

Gladstone served in the Senate until 1971, the year of his death. A bronze bust of Gladstone is displayed in the antechamber to the Senate in the Centre Block of Parliament Hill.

It shows him wearing a feathered headdress and acknowledges his significant contribution to the Senate and to Canada.

The distinctive pat-

tern featured across the top and bottom of the Canada 150 note is based on the Assomption sash, also known as the arrow sash. The long, finger-woven sash, most commonly worn tied around the waist, is part of a tradition integral to the history of Canada. Colourful sashes were worn by French-Canadian habitants and became a hallmark of the voyageurs and fur traders, who carried them westward at the end of the 18th century.

Traders from the Hudson’s Bay and North West companies regularly offered the sashes as gifts to First Nation peoples, with whom they became popular adornments. Since then, the sash has become an important cultural symbol of the Métis people and is the centrepiece of the “Order of the Sash” ceremony, during which a sash is presented to an individual in appreciation of a significant contribution to the Métis nation.

Robbie Robertson to receive Six Nations of the Grand River Lifetime Achievement Award

OHSWEKEN – A guitar player since the age of 10, Robbie Robertson was born in 1943 and holds roots in the Six Nations and Jewish communities.

Throughout his musical career Robertson has played with industry stars such as Ronnie Haw-kins and Bob Dylan.

Over the course of several studio albums recorded with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “The Band” Robertson has penned countless musical classics including “Up on Cripple Creek,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” and more. Since The Band’s farewell concert in 1976 he has also created music for many Martin Scorsese films such as “Raging Bull” and “The Colour of Money,” as well as working with Dreamworks as

a creative executive.

Robertson has released five solo albums and been the subject of a PBS documentary called “Making a Noise”. In 1980 he produced and co-starred in the movie “Carny”. In Canada he has won several Juno awards, been inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, been made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.

For his lifetime of achievements Robertson has been presented with awards by the Grammy’s, the National Academy of Songwriters, and the Native American Music Awards.

As a member of the community, Six Nations of the Grand River will also be honouring him with a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the

B.C. teaching material linking 'squaw' to 'Aboriginal woman' pulled for review The Canadian Press VANCOUVER — A complaint from a parent about a classroom assignment to match the word ``squaw'' to ``Aboriginal woman'' has prompted a publisher to remove a book for review and is raising questions about how schools should teach controversial topics.

A Vancouver woman took to social media over the weekend to express her shock about educational material used at Templeton Secondary School in Vancouver related to the graphic novel ``Susanna Moodie: Roughing it in the Bush.''

Publisher Margie Wolfe of Second Story Press apologized Monday and said the book had been removed from the company's website for review, along with all other material with content related to Indigenous history, peoples, and communities.

``We take very seriously the criticisms of this guide and sincerely apologize for the hurt and offence we have caused,'' Wolfe said in a statement. ``We appreciate the efforts made by everyone who called attention to the guide, particularly the family in Vancouver, British Columbia, who were so hurt by the use of the resource in the classroom.''

The woman, whose name isn't on her social media account, said she was livid about the ``stomach-twisting'' lesson plan.

She could not be reached for comment.

The novel is an adaptation of a Canadian classic first published in 1852, in which the word squaw shows up 39 times. It was accompanied by a recently developed teaching guide that describes the book's language as politically incorrect.

One of the exercises asks students to match

terms with their ``appropriate language'' definitions, which for squaw is ``an Aboriginal woman.'' ``Common prejudices in the nineteenth century resulting from ... racism perpetrated by white Europeans against blacks and Aboriginals were reflected in the everyday language people used to describe themselves and each other,'' the teachers' resource guide says. ``Today it is unacceptable to use words such as Indian, squaw, darkie, Negro, Yankee, and papist.

The use of such language in this book should be viewed in the context of its time in history.''

Jon Smith, an English professor at Simon Fraser University whose research focuses on the southern United States, applauded the decision to pull the material from circulation.

Smith dismissed the notion that discriminatory language is any less

offensive in the past just because its use may have been more widespread. ``That's a pretty naive way to talk about racism.

My analogies are with the N-word, and that word was always loaded with power and derogatory,'' he said. ``I mean, my gosh, they actually had the word darkie in there? Even in 1852, that word wasn't exactly free of racist connotations. ``In the U.S. South, people want to say, 'Heritage not hate.' But the heritage is hate; hate is part of the heritage. And the only way to get past that it seems to me is to acknowledge that quite forthrightly.''

The Vancouver School Board is looking into the context in which the materials were used in the classroom, Supt. John Lewis said in a single-sentence statement.

Glen Hansman, president of the B.C. Teachers' Federation, said it is im-

portant for instructors to engage with students on fraught subjects rather than shy away from them. ``The responsibility of the teacher then is to unpack that use of language and to situate it in the historical context and to do things in a way that is sensitive to students in the classroom,'' Hansman said. ``My understanding is that is exactly what was happening in the particular classroom that triggered this incident.''

Hansman said he does not presume to know the particular circumstances of this parent, but he would encourage her to reach out and engage with the teacher and the school about her concerns. ``Rather than being in denial about attitudes we used to have, we have to acknowledge them, identify them for what they are and then equip our teachers and students with ways of combating those

things so they don't occur again,'' he said.

Education Minister Rob Fleming said he is always concerned when a student has a negative experience, but added that it is unfortunate the incident is drawing attention away from the overwhelming success of the curriculum to date. ``The conversation that British Columbia is having all over the school system is about how exciting the new curriculum is and how inclusive the lessons of Aboriginal culture and their contributions to British Columbia culture are,'' Fleming said.

B.C. introduced a new curriculum last year that teaches students as young as 10 about the government's past discriminatory practices, including the crushing legacy of Canada's residential-school system and the Chinese Head Tax.

Alberta requires people who fish with a net to have a Metis Domestic Fishing Licence.

Two people were issued appearance notices for fishing without a licence and all of the fish were seized. ``This was an unfortunate circumstance. I understand there may have been some issues with the licensing, but I think this situation could have been avoided,'' Feehan

said in the statement, which was issued late Saturday. ``I commit that we will take steps to ensure this doesn't happen again.''

The statement said Feehan has personally apologized to Metis Local 193 president Shirley Tremblay and vice-president Ernie Desjarlais.

A video of the incident has been posted to Facebook.

Tremblay, who was at the camp when Feehan visited but who wasn't there when the officers arrived, said she doesn't fault the officers for coming to the camp and con-

ducting an investigation.

But she doesn't think they needed to take the fish. ``We didn't want a riot or anything to occur. It was actually the vice president of the Metis local that helped put the fish in bags,'' Tremblay said in an interview Sunday. ``They took our food supply, or a portion of our food supply.''

The statement from Feehan said the government will work with the community to ensure members have appropriate licences.

ment Advisory Committee issued a statement Saturday about the incident, where it called the actions of the officers at the cultural camp ``completely inappropriate'' and ``insensitive.'' ``It was a time for celebration that was severely tainted by the actions of but an ill-informed few,'' the statement said.

The group tweeted Sunday it accepts Feehan's apology and hopes it expedites the creation of a Metis consultation and harvesting policy.

Tremblay said the camp at Conklin has been going for about eight

years, and includes other traditional Metis activities, such as drying meat and berries and beading.

She said Feehan ate a meal when he visited the camp that included fish from the lake, pork hocks, potatoes and salads.

According to the statement from Feehan, he enjoyed himself. ``I had a great time at the camp and truly enjoyed meeting with the residents,'' he said. ``These types of cultural experiences are very important in preserving Metis culture and I wouldn't want to see that experience ruined.''

Indigenous relations minister sorry after fish were seized from Metis camp

By Chezney Martin HALIBURTON – Cultural appropriation of Indigenous design and method in the art world has been a long-standing battle for authentic Indigenous artists. When a group of medical students from McMaster University viewed two inauthentic “totem poles” during a wilderness medicine elective at the Bark Lake Leadership and Conference Centre in Haliburton, they took positive action.

Christa Jonathan, a student attending McMaster from Six Nations, noticed that the poles were not authentic during the group's stay at the elective in August.

“There were about 10 [medical students] that participated in this elective for two weeks and we had to fill out an evaluation after staying out there,” she said. “The elective is run by some doctors and they just rent the space and the cabins at Bark Lake Leadership and Conference Centre.”

“Throughout the week I noticed that there were totem poles that were on

the property and they weren't actually totem poles, they were just basically wooden poles that had different designs carved into them that I could tell were not Indigenous.”

Jonathan added that a back story on the carvings wasn't given, and that they were specifically referred to as “wooden carvings.”

Jonathan confirmed her thoughts with one of her peers who has a Ph.D., in Archaeology and works with the Seashell Nation on the Sunshine Coast of B.C.. Allowing the poles to remain would make it easy for other viewers to mistakenly assume that the carvings were authentic totem poles.

Jonathan then brought her thoughts to the rest of her peers, who supported the idea that in light of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its era, they as a group should request for the carvings to be taken down. Collectively, the group then used their evaluation sheets to request the removal.

“There were about 15 of us that all potentially

wrote it in our evaluations,” she said. “A little over two weeks afterwards, they said that they recognized [the appropriation] behind the carvings and they said they were going to remove them.”

“In my evaluation I said 'in recognition of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action, this would be a really good step forward in the relationship with indigenous people if summer camps like this one would remove these symbols.'”

Jonathan then explained that from the email sent confirming the removal of the carvings; the staff at Bark Lake mentioned that after learning more about the TRC, they spoke to the surrounding Anishnaabe Nations about the carvings and the Nations agreed that the removal is appropriate.

The advocacy of the group as a whole shows just how well the use of both voice and reason can create positive change and understanding.

Classifications are reported to the Attorney General, who recommends candidates for Order-in-Council appointments to the Ontario Court of Justice.

Bilingual positions require a high degree of proficiency in English as well as a superior level of oral and written proficiency in French. As First Nations people comprise a large percentage of the population in the areas being serviced by the court in Timmins*, we especially encourage people of Indigenous heritage and people with an in-depth understanding of Indigenous communities and the issues affecting those communities to apply for this vacancy.

The explosive finale capped off a Polaris show full of surprises on Monday night, including an unsettling performance of Nirvana's ``Rape Me'' by nominee Tanya Tagaq and another round of sound

problems for rock band Weaves.

But it was Pimienta — the winner of the $50,000 Polaris prize _ who shook everything up and appeared to leave an audience of mostly industry professionals either stunned or cheering over her candid frustrations.

Pimienta's Spanish-language album ``La Papessa,'' which translates as ``high priestess,'' was regarded as a dark horse in the race for the Polaris prize.

Many of the songs on the independent release touch on politically-charged themes such as the global water crisis and patriarchy. But since the album wasn't sung in either English or French, it fell under the radar in Canada, even among music aficionados.

The point wasn't lost on Pimienta, who immigrated

to Canada 10 years ago and began collaborating with artists like A Tribe Called Red and releasing music without a label. She spoke about race openly backstage, expressing hopes that being chosen for this year's Polaris was a sign of a thirst for more diversity in Canadian music. ``Me and my crew, it's mainly brown people, Indigenous folks, black folks,'' she said, before explaining what message she hopes the Polaris recognition sends other visible minorities. ``You don't have to be white, you don't have to be skinny, blonde, sing in English or French, and you can stand by what you want to do — (and) what you want to say.''

livered acceptance speeches with quite the same intensity, and even before Pimienta addressed the technical gaffe, she was ready to talk about other problems. ``Perhaps the only thing I can say is I hope that the Aryan specimen who told me to go back to my own country two weeks after I arrived in London, Ontario, Canada is watching this,'' she said early on in her delivery.

She also thanked her son, her mother for ``enduring white supremacy in Canada'' and single mothers for inspiring her work.

Pimienta also participated in Tagaq's powerful version of ``Rape Me.'' As the song neared its close, women in red dresses rose from their seats in the audience as the Indigenous throat singer repeated the lyrics, ``I'm not the only one.''

The performance was an extension of the Red Dress Project, an art installation created by Winnipeg-based Metis artist

Jaime Black, which intends to draw attention to the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada.

Pimienta said when Tagaq asked her to don a red dress she didn't think twice. ``I am a guest in this country,'' she said backstage. ``I am on colonized land.

I'm very aware of it. So any time that an Indigenous person wants you to do something in solidarity you don't ask any questions and you do it.''

After Tagaq's riveting performance she returned to accompany fellow nominees Weaves on a new song. But they wound up awkwardly waiting together on stage for Polaris tech staff to fix their faulty sound.

Gamefully playing along, Tagaq and the band's frontwoman Jasmyn Burke filled the silence by laughing about how they originally met each other while using a washroom in Iceland.

Adam Beach fires shots at Hollywood

By Chezney Martin When a painter talks about white washing, they're usually referring to the paint wash made from lime and chalk that is used to prime interior kitchen areas. But when an actor talks about white washing, they're usually referring to the casting of white actors in roles that are historically or appropriately non-white.

This brings forth the memory of the recent casting of Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in Joe Wright's version of Peter Pan and a white actor in a live action Aladdin.

But this form of casting has affected African, Asian, Hispanic and Indigenous roles for years in the film industry, as many influential contributions to history and influential leaders with diverse backgrounds have been played by white actors or actresses. At one point in time, minorities would have been happy with a character portrayed as a minority even being onscreen, but in today's day and age it can be done right. However, the excuses vary from lack of ethnic actors to choose from, to the casting of white actors bringing in more money for a film. And this has been brought up by an influential voice.

On September 14, Ojibway Actor Adam Beach penned an open letter on the subject of white washing with a thoughtful essay that was published on various media outlets: “In Hollywood, amongst my friends, I’m known as 'The Indian.' I always dreamed of being an actor in Hollywood, but my biggest dream was meeting Alyssa Milano and the day that dream came true played out like this: Alyssa was dating a friend of mine in Los Angeles, and when he introduced me to her, he said, “Alyssa, this is who I was telling you about… this is the Indian.” They don’t mean disrespect in any way.

For the past 200 years, Native peoples have been forced to assimilate. Native spiritual practices were outlawed. Those Natives who continued to practice ceremony were jailed, and even killed. Native children were taken away from their families and placed in residential and boarding schools.

Their hair was shorn, they were given European names, and they were made to wear western clothes. Native children were beaten for speaking their own Native languages and abuse was rampant. Children were not allowed to see their families, and some did not survive the beatings or harsh living conditions of these horrific places.

These tragic events continued to play out well into the 1970s. Many Native communities are still plagued by problems that stem directly from the historical trauma caused by the theft of tribal lands and resources as well as forced assimilation.

Natives have been fighting for centuries to preserve our lands and cultures and we are still working to reclaim our identities. Our identity is

our birthright.

There is no need to cast non-Native performers and actresses in Native roles. This is not 1950. The practice of whitewashing is unnecessary, unacceptable and discriminatory.

It promotes the erasure of communities of color. Natives are often typecast in stereotypical roles or removed from the narrative entirely.

Sonny Skyhawk (Sicangu Lakota), who formed American Indians in Film and Television, states, “We have a caliber of acting chops that should be utilized.” There are many talented and capable Native performers to fill Native roles and actual Native people are the only ones who should. My colleague, acclaimed director Chris Eyre (Cheyenne and Arapaho) states, “As Native American artists we have come too far to accept cultural backsliding.” Mr. Eyre consults on history and contemporary appropriation of Native culture through www.thenativenetworkers.com.

Being Native is more than claiming your greatgreat-grandmother was a Cherokee princess, or that people have told you that you look Native because you have high cheekbones. It’s more than a last-minute bullet point on your resume or Wikipedia page to qualify you for a role you wouldn’t otherwise receive. Incidentally, claiming Native ancestry without proof makes one a fraud.

Brantford Police blotter

Pedestrian struck by VIA Rail passenger train On Tuesday September 19, 2017 at around 7:30 a.m. Brantford Police attended with Emergency Medical Services to

Powerline Road between Oak Park Road and Paris Road about a pedestrian who had been struck by a VIA Rail passenger train.

The train was travelling eastbound from London to Toronto in the southbound track. A 36 year old Brantford man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The VIA Rail passenger train was delayed at the scene during

the sudden death investigation and continued its route shortly before 10:30 a.m. when the track was reopened. The Brantford Police Service continues to assist the coroner’s office as they complete their investigation. No further information will be released by the Brantford Police Service at this time.

The two males wanted to exchange 10 memorial plaques for cash.

During the exchange a third male attended the business and had a heated confrontation with one of the males. Shortly before 4:30 p.m. community patrol officers were contacted and the two males selling the plaques fled the area prior to police arriving. Investigation revealed that the 10 memorial plaques being sold were the ones stolen from Oakhill Cemetery. At around 7:00 p.m.

BEAT Officers observed one of the accused in the downtown on Dalhousie Street. Gary Jacob Riddell-Watcheson a 28-year-old Brantford man was arrested for Theft Under $5000 x 10 and Possession of Stolen Property Under $5000 x 10 and was held for a bail hearing. On Friday September 15, 2017 at around 11:30 a.m. an officer observed the second wanted accused in the area of Wellington Street and Park Avenue. The officer approached the accused on foot and the accused fled to avoid arrest. A short foot pursuit ensued where the officer caught up to the accused and arrested him. The second accused Ian Thomas Erskine a 30-year-old Brantford man is charged with Theft Under $5000 x 10 and Possession of Stolen Property Under $5000 x 10 and was held for a bail hearing. Officers were in contact with the supervisor from the City of Brantford Cemetery Services who were able to identify the locations where the 5’x 9’ground memorial plaques had been stolen and identify who the victims were.

Theft On Monday September 18, 2017 a business on Plant Farm Blvd. reported that they were a victim of a theft. On Sunday September 17, 2017 at around 5:30 a.m. unknown person(s) stole an amount of copper wire from a power station. The theft caused extensive damage to the area.

Arrest / Warrants

On Monday September 18, 2017 at around 10:30 p.m. community patrol officers while on routine patrol observed a male known to them riding a bike in the area of Murray Street and Greenwich Street. This male was currently wanted by the courts on outstanding warrants of arrest. The officers were able to stop and arrest the accused.

During the arrest the accused was searched and was found to be in possession of a pair of bolt cutters. The bike that the accused was riding had been reported stolen to police in May 2017.

The accused Jordan William Clark a 22-year-old Brantford man is charged with Possession of Break In Instruments and Possession of Stolen Property Under $5000. The accused will also answer to the outstanding warrants. The accused was held for a bail hearing.

On Monday September 18, 2017 a construction site located on Elgin Street reported that sometime overnight they were a victim of a theft of equipment from a construction trailer. The trailer was forcefully opened and tools were taken.

SPORTS Pro-Fit Corvairs top Division in young season know the score.

By Jim Windle CALEDONIA – There are three divisions in the GOJHL and all three are occupied by teams who are yet to have suffered a loss so far this very early Jr. B hockey season.

The Leamington Flyers top the Western Conference with a 4-0 record, with Stratford first in the Midwest, 3-0. Meanwhile the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs lead the Golden Horseshoe Conference 3-0, after defeating the Pelham Panthers, 7-3 Saturday night. The Corvairs outshot the Panthers 42-21 along the way.

Sean O’Brien opened the first period with a powerplay goal from Jamie Lauzon and Bobby Harrison at 11:45.

Panthers’ Jake Herrberg answered with a powerplay goal with their own at 13:53. Matt Watson gave the Corvairs a 2-1 lead and O’Brien closed the period the way it began, with his second powerplay goal at 18:16.

Pelham could not stop the growing tide against them as the Corvairs opened it up in the second with goals scored by TJ Hughes, O’Brien’s third powerplay goal, and Eddie Schults.

Plenham had some luck on the powerplay as well, scoring two in the middle period to make it 6-3 for Caledonia.

“I think we played our best game in our first game against Elmira,” says Rizzetto.

On that night, the defending Sutherland Cup Champion Sugar Kings were leading 3-1 after they scored two goals in 20 seconds. Caledonia came back with three unanswered goals late in the period to wrestle the win out of Elmira’s hands. The tying two, scored only 12 seconds apart.

The Corvairs hosted the Fort Erie Meteors, Tuesday night in a game that missed our deadline, however, Caledonia is the odds-on favourite to win that one.

Coming up this week, Buffalo is in Caledonia, Saturday, 23rd. The ProFit Corvairs complete the home stand on Tuesday when they host the St. Catharines Falcons in Caledonia at 7:30 p.m..

O’Brien, No. 55, leads the team in points, but at this time of the year it is only a shadow of things to

come as the London native enters his first season with the Corvairs. Last year he played for the St. Mary’s Lincolns where his talent was hidden on a last place team who won only two games all year in the Western Conference.

Another new Corvair this year is No. 26, Bobby Harrison who came over from Chatham in the off-season. He recorded a decent 16 goals and 25 assists with Chatham. He is a little small, but is a good skater and an even better playmaker.

Rochester adds more Six Nations talent in NLL Draft

By Jim Windle OAKVILLE – The National Lacrosse League (NLL) welcomed the newest crop of rookies at the 2017 to 2018 NLL Draft at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville, Ont. on Monday, Sept. 18 ahead of the league’s 32nd year with the 2018 regular season set to begin on December 8, 2017.

The Rochester Knighthawks drafted defenseman Kessler Doolittle from Six Nations with the 52nd overall pick at the NLL Drafts. The Six Nations product recently won a Minto Cup with the Six Nations Arrows. In two seasons with the Arrows, Doolittle notched 11 points in 30 games. In four seasons at the Junior “B” level, he was part of three Founder’s Cup championship teams. In 2015, he was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player in the Junior “B” Western Conference. He also won a bronze medal with the Iroquois West at the 2015 U19 World Lacrosse Challenge.

“Kessler is a tough, versatile defender with a winning pedigree,” said Knighthawks scout Stuart Brown. “We are excited to get a player like Kessler in

Six Nations Master Team repeats as Senior Provincial Champs

The Six Nations Senior Masters Lacrosse Team captured their second consecutive O.M.L. Provincial Title two weekends ago.

During the preliminary rounds they beat Huntsville 7-3, Barrie 8-3 and NOTL 12-3. In semifinals, they trounced Halton Hills 11-2 to advance to the finals, where they repeated as Provincial Champs by downing the No. 1 seed, Toronto Beaches by a score of 6-3.

Knighthawks sign two new players

By TRT staff ROCHESTER — The Rochester Knighthawks announced that they have signed goalie Chase Martin to a one-year deal and have also signed veteran defenseman Billy Dee Smith to a one-year deal.

Martin comes to the Knighthawks after helping the Senior “B” Six Nations Rivermen reach the President’s Cup Finals.

“Chase had a really good summer and played well in the President’s Cup when given the opportunity,” said Knighthawks scout Stuart Brown. “He has steadily improved each year since he graduated juniors. We felt like now was a good time to give him an opportunity to show us what he’s capable of at the next level.”

Martin finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and led all goaltenders with a 6.18 goalsagainst average. The Rivermen took home a silver medal, to go along with their Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) Senior “B” Men's Lacrosse title.

“That was a long tournament and a grind,” said the 24-year-old about playing nine games in seven days. “It seemed like you had a game every day, and you didn’t have a chance to sit still.

By Thursday or Friday, I think I was running on instinct and will.”

It has been quite the year for Martin, who also reached the 2017 Arena Lacrosse League (ALL) Semifinals with the Six Nations Snipers.

Once again, he posted impressive numbers as he earned five wins, a 9.41 goals-against average and an .807 save percentage during the regular season.

This past summer marked the third time that Martin has played professional lacrosse, having previously appeared in the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax).

Martin suited up for the Ohsweken Demons from 2015 to 2016. In both seasons, the Demons reached the Creator’s Cup Finals.

In 2015, he also played Senior “B” lacrosse with the Six Nations Rivermen and collected a 5-2 record and a 5.72 goals-against average. That season, the Rivermen earned an OLA and President’s Cup championship.

Martin, who is a product of Six Nations, has become accustomed to playing for winning teams.

From 2012 to 2014, he helped the Six Nations Rebels rule the Junior “B” circuit, capturing three straight Founders’ Cup championships. He also earned three consecutive Co-goaltender of the Year honours along the way.

“It’s a pretty high standard,” said Martin. “Not a

lot of people can go to a final every year in every league they play in. That’s always the end goal. I am lucky that I have been a part of some good teams that I helped get there.”

With years of success behind him, Martin will now take his first shot at playing in the National Lacrosse League. He was beyond words as he described signing his first pro contract.

“It sounds cliché, but it’s my childhood dream,” he said. “It’s what every lacrosse player thinks about when their growing up. Now that it’s hap-

pened, it is unreal.

Veteran defenseman Billy Dee Smith was also signed to a one-year deal.

“Billy Dee has established himself as a topnotch defender in the NLL,” said Knighthawks scout Stuart Brown. “We are excited to bring him to camp and give him a shot at competing for a roster spot.”

The 35-year-old Smith played all of his 15 seasons in Buffalo after being selected third overall in the 2002 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. In 192 games, which was the fourth

most in Bandits’ history, he posted 32 goals, 35 assists and 512 loose balls. Smith even holds a place of distinction in league history. By playing his physical, hard-nosed brand of lacrosse, he racked up the most penalty minutes in NLL history with 634.

The 2008 season was the highlight of Smith’s career as he helped the Bandits win the Champion’s Cup. During the Cup run, he set career highs in playoff points (four), goals (four) and loose balls (16). The fol-

lowing season, he was honoured as the NLL Defensive Player of the Year.

In 2016, Smith joined select company as he was named Buffalo’s team captain. Last season, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound defenseman appeared in 14 games and collected 25 loose balls.

For Knighthawks forward Dan Dawson, who enters his 17th year in the NLL, it’s nice to have Smith on his side of the floor for the first time in his pro career.

By coming to Rochester, Smith is reunited with over a dozen former teammates from past junior, senior, professional and international teams.

One player in particular, however, that Smith looks forward to playing with again is fellow St. Catharines, Ontario native Matt Vinc. The two lacrosse veterans have played together from ages 13 to 29, but this will be their first chance to play on the same team in the NLL. “It has been something we have always talked about since I came into the league,” said Vinc, who broke into the NLL in 2006. “I am excited because he is one of my closest friends and because he

is a huge defensive presence on the floor and one of the best ‘D’ guys in the world.”

On the international stage, Smith has earned three trips to the world championships with Team Canada. He won gold in 2006 and silver in 2010 at the FIL World Lacrosse Championship. In 2015, Smith played in his first FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship and won a gold medal.

On Oct. 21, Smith will once again don the maple leaf as he plays for Team Canada in an international exhibition against Team USA. Shortly after playing for Canada in the Heritage Cup, Smith will attend Knighthawks training camp.

When asked about playing for his former rival, he was squarely focused on the task at hand: making the Knighthawks’ 2017-18 roster.

“I am planning on getting in the best shape of my life,” he said. “‘Vno’ (Matt Vinc) is one of my best friends and lives right around the corner from me. I’ll be meeting him at the gym in the mornings.

“I haven’t been this excited in a while. It’s a chance to prove myself all over again. Ultimately, I know I can make an impact in Rochester and hopefully help them get back to a championship.”

Adam Beach speaks out continued from page 27 Even if we overlook tribal enrollment or the Indian status cards that legally identify one as Native in the United States and Canada, there are other markers of Native identity, like kinship and community bonds. One is Native their entire life.

It is a not a costume that we can remove. These are some of the topics that my wife (Summer Tiger) and I speak about on a daily basis. Only a Native knows what it is to be Native, because they have the life experience to show it, in all its nuanced complexities.

Summer, who is an enrolled member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology, states, “The perpetuation of historical trauma that has been handed down generation to generation is resulting in disproportionate rates of youth suicides, alcoholism, and drug abuse on reservations. Hollywood profits off of telling our stories, using us as backdrops in their white savior narratives, sending the message to our people that we are disposable. The least Hollywood could do is cast Natives who are actually connected to their tribe.”

When I was selected by John Woo to play the lead in the movie Windtalkers alongside Nicolas Cage, my Hollywood dreams became a reality. I was now with the big boys.

However, with the respect I have for our Native peoples I put my integrity before my career and told my manager that the studio had to get permission

from the Navajo Nation for me to be hired to play the role of a Code Talker. Everyone thought I was crazy to put my career on the line, but this is who I am.

My next phone call was from my manager saying that the Navajo Nation has approved, with one condition: that the studio hire an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation to play the other Code Talker in the film. Roger Willie was hired to play my friend. He taught me so much about the history of the Navajo people, which I still hold in my heart to this very day.

'There are many Native stories that are not being told. We are so much more than stories of poverty, or hapless victims who must be rescued by a white savior,' states Ruth Hopkins (Dakota/Lakota), a tribal attorney, activist and Native writer. Audiences are being robbed by false representation of Native identity and the chance to bear witness to our truth.

My friend Delanna Studi, a documented citizen of the Cherokee Nation, and chair of the SAG-AFTRA National Native Americans Committee, states, 'I am all too familiar with the roles that are being written for our people, especially our women.

All too often we are portrayed as princesses or victims adding to the ‘othering’ of and dehumanizing of our Native women.

In truth, many of our tribal nations are matrilineal and our women hold power and stature.'

It is troubling to see roles meant for Native women being given to

those who are not Native, especially when that character is the victim of violence. One in three Native women are survivors of sexual assault, and while it hasn’t been publicized until recently, there is an epidemic of missing and murdered Native women on this continent. Just a few weeks ago, a young Native woman in North Dakota who was eight months pregnant went missing and her remains were later discovered in a nearby river. Her child had been ripped from her womb and taken by her alleged killers. Her story is not uncommon. Right now there are thousands of missing Native women and others whose murder cases remain unsolved.

Not selecting a Native woman to embody the bravery of these women is a disgrace. This particular story reminds me of my mother Sally, who was killed by a drunk driver in front of my house. She died in a ditch and was eight months pregnant with a baby girl, who also died. I was eight years old.

These emotions I carry inform the opinions I have and the statements I make on Indians in Hollywood. We are tired of others telling us who we are.

We know who we are and what we look like as Native people. After all we’ve overcome, being able to represent ourselves is not too much to ask.
