HCCC questions HDI transparency after $4 million dollar acquisition goes undisclosed OHSWEKEN — HDI says they recently came under scrutiny by members of the HCCC after neglecting to inform the Council about receiving nearly $4million dollars from the sale of a windmill partnership they are engaged in.

According to the HDI’s June/July report to the HCCC, prepared

by Director Hazel Hill — HDI was notified their holdings in a partnership for the Great Grand Valley 2 had received a payout of $4,071,777.21 as a result of the project being refinanced.

The report says HCCC maintains its ownership in the project.

Two members of the HCCC who were attending a finance committee meeting on May 31 — Chief Arnold Hill and Mary Sandy — were sent on behalf of HCCC

to a meeting in Burlington to discuss the payout, the report says.

Hill goes on to personally apologize in the report, saying members of the HCCC were upset HDI did not disclose the details of the payout to the whole council during the June 3rd HCCC meeting.

“It has been alleged that HDI only works with certain Chiefs & Clanmothers. This is simply not true. All of the Chiefs and Clanmothers are notified of meetings, by email, phone call or in person if necessary. We work with whoever shows up."

HDI was also criticized for not bringing this information to our June 3rd council. HDI Director Hazel Hill and Financial Director Rick Saul discussed the pay-

ment and determined that it would be best to wait until the July report in hopes of having more information about the disbursement, therefore we did not make the information public. I am uncertain as to how it became a topic of discussion at council or why Chief Arnold Hill was put in a position of defending the decision.

I apologize to Chief Hill, the Oneida Nation and to the Chiefs Council as this was never our intent. With transparency also comes responsibility and we continue to strive to provide as much detail as possible in the short time we are given to report,” Hill wrote.

HDI goes on to share in it’s report that nearly $2.6 million of that payout was used to pay off the corporation’s debt.

Other details in the report, which is archived on HCCC's website goes on to disclose the financial statements for the corporate body HCCC does business with, details surrounding the HCCC’s pending battles with Enbridge and a request to use funds to build an administration building.

One shocking revelation in the report shows auditors tabulated the HCCC is responsible for $14,513.22 in municipal taxes on lands they own in Brant and Norfolk County beyond the borders of the Six Nations reserve.

Hill writes to date the HCCC has not paid municipal taxes and has submitted requests to those municipalities to make arrangements on any outstanding amounts.

The award was part of a new Best Fight Against the System category. Members of the Lakota Sioux of Standing Rock remain engaged in the US court system continuing their fight to stop the flow of oil through the DAPL. Other nominees in the category included artists Alessia Cara, Big Sean and John Legend.

SIX NATIONS – A post cited by Dan Werner to the Kayanase Facebook page on Wednesday, August 23, explained a unique phenomenon on the front lawn of the Ohsweken Pharmasave.

A “large cluster” of orange coloured mushrooms bloomed near the entrance to the parking lot near the base of one of the larger trees. The fungi cluster is scientifically dubbed Omphalotus Olearius and are commonly known as JackO-Lantern mushrooms.

These mushrooms are both poisonous when eaten and exhibit one of the rarest features in fungi – bioluminescence.

Reports of glowing mushrooms throughout history make it seem that the awe felt when seeing a glowing fungus has been ongoing. Aristotle (384-322 B.C..) reported a light that was distinct from fire and emanated from decaying wood, just as a Dutch consul gave accounts of Indonesian peoples using glowing fungus to illuminate pathways in forests.

But, out of 100,000 species of fungi, only 71 of them offer the glow that the Jack-O-Lantern mushroom provides. Majority of the 71 species are found in tropical climates, but it is yet to be proven as to why these mushrooms glow at all.

This makes the glowing fungi families all more intriguing. But scientists have come to know that bioluminescence does provide some antioxidant protection to the fungus, and the light also attracts insects, which may help in spore dispersal.

mushroom (Laetiporus sulphureus) and the chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius). In contrast, the sulphur mushroom has a smooth surface that is scattered with microscopic pores, and the chanterelle grows scattered singly on the ground and has a thicker flesh than the Jack-OLantern mushroom.

Needless to say, when in doubt consult a fungi expert, or wait until nightfall to see if the fungi glows.

Historical revisionism usually goes to the winners.

But it’s not clear who the winners are in the case of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (EFTO) August 24, 2017 motion to remove John A.’s name from Ontario public schools. As agents for local change, in 2015 the ETFO endorsed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) 94 Calls to Action. Did we win? Can we start rewriting history?

“ETFO understands that it is integral for educators to move forward into reconciliation with the indigenous peoples of Canada,” said the EFTO responding to the TRC. “It is our hope to educate and inform ETFO members on the diversity of indigenous peoples in Canada, provide

information on the complex historical and current relationship between Canada and Aboriginal nations, and provide for dialogue to dispel common myths and misconceptions of Aboriginal peoples.”

Banning John A.’s name from Ontario public schools dramatically enacts their support for the TRC. “The [August 24] motion recognizes that Macdonald has been celebrated based on an incomplete version of Canadian history,” the ETFO stated within the TRC context. “As a central architect of the Indian Act and residential schools, Macdonald played a key role in developing systems that perpetuated genocide against indigenous people. Passing this motion recognizes the impact this history has on all of our students, but specifically on indigenous students, parents and educators.”

The EFTO bases its position on the harsh reality of colonization, racial superiority, and power.

"When the school is on the reserve the child lives with its parents, who are savages; he is surrounded by savages,'' John A. said to the House of Commons in 1883.

"Though he may learn to read and write he is simply a savage who can read and write. Indian children should be withdrawn as much as possible from the parental influence.'' Thus, John A.’s Indian Residential Schools would become the weapon for what the TRC called cultural genocide.

Reconciliation is an unattainable myth

By Rachel A. Snow Canada’s federal government has made many pre-election promises and continues to make promises to resolve the chasm between mainstream life in Canada versus life for the original peoples.

Central to this idea is reconciliation. Reconciliation is to be the meeting of two distinct peoples, the settlers and the original peoples. However, until now reconciliation has been defined by settler norms. Is there any significant change coming that will benefit the first peoples?

Current mainstream media representations present federal statements in “reconciliation” as innovative, unheralded and positive. Justice Minister Raybould-Wilson’s principles are seen as concrete evidence of a new approach to the myriad of problems faced by the first peoples.

Contrast the government’s “innovation” with the original people’s position. It is a repeat of the cavalry coming and the results are predictable.

Solutions that come from a paternalistic point of view, however well marketed or lauded will have the same results. Consider the creation of reserves,

the temporary placement of original peoples on specific parcels of land as a colonial “solution” that remains unsettled.

Translations from east to west state that the original people were intent on “sharing” the land. This idea of sharing the land includes the “resources” that allowed the original people a separate existence where spirituality, humility, sustainability and harmony flourished.

Indigenous people did not compartmentalize the land, waters, plants, animals and human beings like the newcomers.

The original people looked into the vast cosmos and saw the interconnection of all things.

This relatedness caused the indigenous not to harm the very parts of the land or waters that would sustain them.

So this is part of the initial problem. This understanding of the first peoples has never been properly communicated.

It has been undermined and belittled but it has not been praised as visionary or the best way to safeguard the planet for all life.

Following this difference in worldviews, the goals of settler society and the original people are polar opposites.

Where settler society

looks at land as an economic tool, the original people see their ancestors. Where settler society lives to accumulate, the original people were honoured for their gift giving and giveaways.

Where settler society valued the individual, the original people valued the collective.

These core values have been misunderstood, or if understood, willfully denigrated. What is the justification for this willful blindness? Canadian historical commentaries have contained scenes of wild Indians savagely beating on each other, roaming the continent without direction or purpose. The contributions made by the original people have been downplayed and consistently overlooked. Why? Is it not better for all Canadian mainstream blood memory to think that they “rescued” the Indians from themselves?

Is it not better for Canada to deflect their genocidal policies?

Policies such as overhunting animals relied upon by the original people that would then lead to starvation.

Polices such as distributing blankets carrying the smallpox virus for which whole nations had no immunity.

Policies such as taking children “ostensibly” for school, but actually causing the breakdown of the original people’s family units, clans and communities.

Quick rebuttals will always immediately say “this was all in the past” and the number one retort: “Get over it”.

With Bill C-45, waters and lakes are no longer protected; including waters used by the wildlife that are integral to the spiritual, ceremonial and ongoing lifestyle of the original people. This means that similar to the overhunting of wildlife, this current government is willfully harming the water used by animal and plant life utilized by the original people. This is a current, not past issue and it’s not over.

Suicide is an ongoing reality in the original peoples’ communities. The reasons for youth suicide are varied and many but Federal responses include health cutbacks or worse mainstream approaches that do not understand indigenous trauma that has lead to suicide. The original people are not only experiencing youth suicides but also targeted attacks in locations like Thunder Bay. Is the termination of first nation youth and

first nation people similar to directly contributing to their deaths through virus-laden blankets? This is a current, not past issue and its not over.

Safe communities require safe drinking water, roads, infrastructure, adequate housing education and health dollars.

One priority of this government is to bring clean drinking water to more First Nation communities. How is it that in this day and age, reserves are without access to clean water?

The Canadian federal government like other governments has allowed for the removal of First Nation children from their homes. This is very similar to the residential school removal. One important factor, argued

by Cindy Blackstock is that kinship homes in the community or community foster parenting is paid far less than when children are placed in non-native or urban homes. Why? If reserves lack services, then clearly increased dollars will benefit children in care services or in basic needs.

Not only is this a current issue, it is very similar to reduced education dollars received for children who attend on reserve schools versus provincial schools.

It’s not over.

Reconciliation is therefore, not about respecting two nations. Reconciliation is about fitting the original peoples ways and worldviews into the Canadian framework. This is why the original people continue to protest, speak out and object to any statements, principles or policy statements made by the Federal Government.

It has taken more than 500 years for settlers to try to quell the indigenous spirit that exists in the original people. The rigid measures taken

by Canada — elevating First Nation resistance to terrorist proportions is ridiculous. How can protecting the land where our ancestors have always lived be in any way threatening? It may be threatening to the colonial usurpers who treat land and waters as commodities, but for a people who have survived longer than the newcomers have been allowed to stay on this island, it is stewardship.

Reconciliation is to reconcile two viewpoints; but the viewpoint of the original peoples (which now should be all humans’ viewpoints) cannot be constrained in a petty, nearsighted approach.

Reconciliation is an unattainable myth.

25 great years at GREAT

OHSWEKEN – On Friday the 25th, Grand River Employment and Training (GREAT) celebrated 25 years of helping the community in countless different ways.

“We’ve worked really hard as a team over the years really doing our best to help the community succeed when it comes to training and employment,” said Laurie Froman, director of employment and training at GREAT in an interview prior to the event.

What began as a smallscale initiative 25 years ago has turned into a fully-operational, multi-program organization that really seeks out potential in all of their clients and helps each individual looking for higher education, a job, or a feeling of accomplishment to succeed.

“When a community member comes back for a visit and lets us know how helpful GREAT’s services have been, that’s really what it’s all about. We love hearing that,” said Erin Monture, director of business operations.

One says, as a father of Confederation, John A. was far from perfect. Others stood firmly that John A. was an untouchable because of his place in Canada’s creation.

John A. used power to suppress Indian people — namely the Gatling gun.

He stated “we could not always hope to maintain peace with the Indians; that the savage was still a savage, and that until he ceased to be savage.” John A. maintains that Canada’s goal to have continent-wide dominion was interrupted by western tribal treaties he wished to extinguish. “We were always in danger of a collision, in danger of war, in danger of an outbreak,” he said in 1885. “I am only surprised that we have been able so long to maintain peace — that from 1870 until 1885 not one single blow, not one single murder, not one single loss of life, has taken place.”

As an exercise in colonial power and seizing what John A. called “the last best west” John A.

made an example of Louis Riel. Executed on the charge of treason, Riel’s hanging showed how the west would be tamed Canadian style. Hang one person of indigenous ancestry and who needs guns. As John A. said after the execution Riel “shall die though every dog in Quebec bark in his favour."

John A.’s name on buildings and statues exist across the land. Like flags, anthems, legal, social and economic structures, John A.’s presence is a sign-and-symbol of Canadian culture that communicates their idea of the Good Life. According to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, John A. represents a conception of the Good Life from the 1800s.

No value judgement here. John A. was a product of his times. Back in the 1800s the settlers said they were engaged in wars against savages.

They had Charles Darwin to back them up with science where evolution was about “the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life.” War was a law of nature.

Then there’s that little matter of genocide. John

A. knew what he was doing. Indigenous people were perishing because Canada did not honour its treaty obligations.

Children were dying in the schools. Riel was innocent. There were many indigenous people sophisticated in contemporary life and not savages — like our people who’d sat alongside settlers for more than 400 years.

What is true? Known as a two-bottle man, the alcoholic John A. anesthetised himself—something our healers know about.

The EFTO took a huge leap with their daring motion to remove John A.’s name from schools.

The EFTO act encouraged debate as we watched the alt-left and neo-Nazi’s fight over a statue in Charlottesville, Virginia.

But the EFTO does have power — they teach children and are agents for stable social change. They have 78,000 classrooms to teach true meaning of John A. Teaching howthings-came-to-be means rejecting value judgments and teaching understanding.

Lots of fun and learning at Three Fires Powwow Photos by Chezney Martin NEW CREDIT – This year’s Three Fires Powwow took on a different meaning for the community as cultural learning and sacred teachings shared the spotlight with the traditional powwow activities.

The powwow, hosted by the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, on New Credit, was the community’s 31st. The first took place in 1987.

Every year the committee hopes that first time guests, as well as regular event attendees learn something new and this year was different. Guests could participate in lessons and teachings on the sacredness of water; learn more about wampum, and more.

The powwow officially kicked off last Saturday, August 26 to Sunday, August 27 — with a talent night taking place Friday, August 25.

OTTAWA — The federal government is facing increased pressure from Indigenous advocates to confront how historical figures are celebrated in Canada following the passage of a motion by an Ontario teachers' union calling for the removal of Sir John A. Macdonald's name from elementary schools in the province.

A bigger conversation needs to unfold nationally about the role of historic figures in the ``dark realities of colonialism'', NDP MP and Indigenous affairs critic Romeo Saganash said Friday, adding it is the responsibility of Ottawa to begin this dialogue ``in the spirit of reconciliation'' with Indigenous Peoples. ``I also think there should be a priority placed on education regarding historic figures from the Indigenous community, which should include putting their names on important buildings,'' he said in a statement.

Saganash, a residential school survivor, support-

ed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision to remove the name of Hector-Louis Langevin, a father of Confederation, from the Ottawa building that houses the Prime Minister's Office.

Trudeau made the announcement in June after Indigenous MPs and Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde called for the change because Langevin was an architect of the residential school system. ``We've heard from you and the TRC (Truth and Reconciliation Commission) and from many indigenous communities over the past year that there is a deep pain in knowing that ... building carries a name so closely associated with the horror of residential schools,'' Trudeau said at the time.

Bellegarde said he is personally encouraged Canadians are finally speaking about the harsh truths of the country's past, including about how prominent leaders like CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

Big Joe – back from the brink

SIX NATIONS – After six years of soul searching, hard work and the love of a caring wife, Joe Sharrow, better known in these parts simply as “Big Joe” is returning to the stage.

Big Joe is using this year’s Fall Fair Kick-off on Sept 7, at the Fair Grounds to reignite his flame.

The front man of more than 25 years for the popular blues band The Breeze, Joe left the stage six years ago determined to battle his demons or die. The Breeze changed its name to the Healers and moved on without him.

“Most people didn’t know it, but I was really hooked on crack and I could not do anything about it while I was still playing and living the ‘Rock Star’ life,” he reveals.

Maybe it was Joe’s drug problem, but Sharrow and the Breeze parted company and Joe thought his singing days were over.

Sharrow was born and raised in Fort Erie and Buffalo New York where

he began singing with his family at church and when they would get together and sing. When he was about 10 years old, people started to recognize his range and his voice and encouraged him to sing.

The Sharrows moved to Six Nations when Joe was still young and insecure, trying his best to fit in with new friends in his new community.

He would take whatever opportunities he could to sing. That was the one thing he knew he could do and had confidence in doing it. Eventually he met up with some local Six Nations musicians and the Breeze Band was born almost 30-years ago.

Too many years and too many beers took a toll on the big man and it began to show, especially at home where his wife Val hoped for a day when Joe would be clean again.

“I just knew I was in trouble,” recalls Big Joe. “And one day Val told me I had to clean up or get out.”

Sharrow counted the cost and decided it was time to get out of the music scene and to get straight.

After more than 25 years as front man for the Breeze Band, Big Joe Sharrow returns to the stage with a healthy mind, clean and sober, September 7th and a brand new band. He will be appearing with Junkhouse and an array of local Six Nations talent for the 150th Six Nations Fall Fair. Big Joe will be featured for two or three songs with his new band. Fate brought Big Joe and retired Football player Alvin Powell, who was traveling as a motivational speaker at the time, talking about his addictions and how he escaped its hold.

Immediately Joe and Powell connected and soon they were hanging out like best friends and had each other on speed dial.

“He was the one who

really influenced me and helped me get straight,” says Joe. Others helped as well but Joe was still not strong enough in his new lifestyle.

A year after Joe first left the stage he missed it so much that he tried to get another act together, but inside, he knew he wasn’t ready yet.

“We started working on stuff and it was really

starting to sound good, but I remember sitting in my room singing along with a tape when it struck me that I was not ready to go back into that atmosphere,” he says. “I felt really bad for the guys I was working with but they were gracious and respected my situation.”

Val was diagnosed with cancer during this time and needed him more than ever before. “She was

there for me and now I had to be there for her,” says Sharrow.

Happily, Val has been in remission for two years and is fully supportive of Joes return to the stage.

After five years, Sharrow is now clean, strong and ready to get back on the stage. He spoke with one of the guys from the aborted band and Big Joe was back in business.

Rabies, raccoons and cougars

Yes folks all three of the above are alive and well and living in your backyard and in the nearby forests and fields here on the Six Nations of the Grand River Indian Reservation.

In addition to cougars, coons, coyotes; the odd brush wolf are also here in

the last stand of the once great Carolinian Forest of Southern Ontario. Of course, our own Six Nations Wild Life Officer (SNWLO) and his Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) colleagues will deny the presence of cougars so as not to cause a general panic among the good citizens of the wonderful province of Ontario; you can bet your booties that those big

magnificent denizens of the forest are out there.

Throughout the nine plus years that the author of this article was employed by the Senior Administrative Officer (SAO) of the Six Nations of the Grand River, the author had been sworn to secrecy by the SNWLO and the SAO and the MNR that the author would never, upon penalty of being fired im-

mediately, ever inform anyone of the presence of cougars in this area. If asked by anyone if there were cougars in these parts, the author had been instructed by his superiors to not answer the questions or lie as the MNR had officially declared that cougars were extinct in Southern Ontario.

coons which are in great supply everywhere in the southern and south western part of the province including your backyards, alleyways, playgrounds and farmers fields; rabies like the now officially extinct cougar is also thriving everywhere.

This is also due in part to the fact that while the author was at his post in the old Six Nations Eco Centre and later in the Wild Life Office at the Iroquois Village Plaza; the MNR had informed the Six Nations Wild Life Office that rabies had been wiped out more than a decade ago and the only animal borne disease which we had to worry about here was; Canine Parvo Virus which, while sickening animals; was not harmful to humans. Believing his supervisor and the MNR, the Six Nations Wild Life Assistant on many occasions would unsuspectingly venture out into the local fields, forests and backyards to confront sick and dying raccoons and some household pets and employ a policy of extreme prejudice against the animal — kill by shooting. However; once again if someone asked about rabies and any danger to themselves; the author was required to inform the person that the sick animal was suffering from Canine Parvo Virus and he or she was in no danger.

Looking back on the whole nine plus years experience while being employed by the Wild Life Office and the SAO; it is incredible that neither the Wild Life Officer nor the Assistant Officer had never been seriously injured or sickened by coming into contact with animals infected with Parvo Virus or the non-existent rabies as neither man had received rabies shots and the office itself contained almost no safety equipment or protective gear to guard against animal bites or serious infections caused by contact with animals.

Staying on the subject of safety equipment; every year the Six Nations Wild Life Office would get many calls regarding Giant Hog Weed and other dangerous plants and like the

extinct cougar and rabies; the official word on Giant Hog Weed was: there is no Giant Hog Weed present on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. In the nine plus years of being employed at the Wild Life Office, the author and the Wild Life Officer responded only to calls coming into the office regarding Hog Weed and neither of the two men ever carried out a proactive search for the elusive plant as the Standard Office Procedure regarding dangerous plants was merely; reactive.

In addition to those plants and animals mentioned previously; the Six Nations Wild Life Office received many calls involving exotic animals and reptiles such as boa constrictors; rattle snakes; Australian wombats; laughing hyenas; alligators; dingo dogs; ostriches; llamas; and even Big Foot which we actually investigated as the person who claimed to have encountered Sasquatch was a local man of the cloth, a Pentecostal Preacher who was considered a reputable member of society. Of course, we never located any sign of the creature; even rumours of its existence here in TobaccoStan do persist among many other reputable sightees.

Even though the Six Nations Wild Life Office was supposedly what the name implies; the office did manage to play host to many other unrelated occupations and events.

Beginning in 2007, the staff of the Six Nations Wild Life Office began setting up a series of archaeological events such as Archaeological Monitor Schools; four in total. Six Annual Archaeological Round Tables from 2007 to 2012 and several wild life enforcement conferences aimed at making the people in law enforcement aware of Six Nations community members hunting and fishing and wild life extraction procedures. In other unrelated business, the Wild Life Officer and his assistant also attended many of the meetings at the Oneida Business Park where the talks to look CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

WINONA – The prime minister dropped in on the Winona 50th Annual Peach Festival, as part of his tour of Southern Ontario — surprising thousands of unsuspecting spectators last Saturday afternoon.

Winona, a small town near Hamilton, has celebrated peaches for the past 50 years and aside from a few jeers and hecklers shouting things like, “stop trying to be a pop star”, also celebrated Justin Trudeau’s short visit.

The Winona Peach Festival is a unique community event, which began in 1967. Six Nations Bingo donates almost 800k to Six Nations Submitted article

SIX NATIONS – Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC) and Six Nations Bingo announced their $795,378 contribution to the Six Nations Sponsorship Program for the 2017 calendar year.

Six Nations Bingo has been donating 40 per cent of their annual net profits to the Six Nations Sponsorship Program since a permanent bingo facility was constructed.

In May 2015, the management of Six Nations Bingo was transferred to SNGRDC who continues to support the Sponsorship Program through annual contributions. This year, Six Nations Bingo was able to increase its contribution by 22 per cent over last year’s contribution. This increase, was in part, a result of the introduction of the new 24 Ball Virtual Bingo game, which can be played by patrons over the age of 18 anytime during regular bingo hours.

The Six Nations Sponsorship Program supports more than 30 local non-profit organizations and initiatives each year, with priority given to minor sports teams. The program emerged after

a group of community members and volunteers began hosting weekly bingo games in the old Community Hall more than 40 years ago, as a means to raise funds for minor sports teams. Now, the sponsorship program is run the by the Six Nations Gaming Commission and fuelled by annual contribution by Six Nations Bingo.

At the beginning of each year, a projected contribution is announced to the sponsorship program in order for them to begin dispersing funds. Once SNGRDC annual audit is completed, a final total is announced and additional funds are made available to the program. In 2016, the estimated contribution was $583,000, however due to a successful fourth quarter the contribution total rose to $649,411.

Health Canada warns the public of suffocation risks of baby nests The Canadian Press Health Canada is warning the public about the suffocation risk associated with baby nests — small, portable beds with soft, padded sides.

Also called baby pods, they are often advertised as multi-functional products that can be used as a sleep surface, a changing mat or a tummy time mat.

Some baby nests are also promoted as being suitable for bed sharing, which involves placing the product in a caregiver's bed.

Health Canada says a baby nest's soft, padded sides pose a suffocation risk.

However, spokesperson Gary Holub says there have not been any incidents involving baby nests in Canada. ``We are aware of open investigations in another (international) jurisdiction regarding baby nest incidents,'' he wrote in an email to The Canadian Press. ``We do not have details of these investigations, but remain in contact with our international partners to learn as much as we can.''

Holub says babies should never be left unattended in baby nests, nor should the nests be placed inside another product, such as a crib, a cradle, a bassinet or a playpen.

He also says babies should never be placed on soft and uneven surfaces, such as standard beds, wa-

ter beds, air mattresses, couches, futons or armchairs, all of which further increase the suffocation risk.

Additionally, Health Canada does not recommend bed sharing or products that are intended to be placed in the adult bed _ or attached to the adult bed _ due to the risk of suffocation and entrapment.

Holub says Health Canada would like to remind families that the safest place for a baby to sleep is on their back, alone in a crib, a cradle or a bassinet that meets current Canadian regulations.

Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada also recommend room sharing, using a crib, a cradle or a bassinet next to a bed as a safe alternative to bed sharing.

Holub says research has shown that it is beneficial for babies to share a room with one or more caregivers, as it may reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

In Canada, products that are intended to provide sleeping accommodation for a baby, including baby nests, are regulated by the Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations issued under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act. ``Health Canada will continue to monitor the situation and will take action to protect the health and safety of Canadians, as needed,'' Holub says.

These excursions where led by Joe Peledeau from the (ORC) and proved to

be very informative before the Ontario Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs took over the project and closed the site to Six Nations Community members. So; that in a nutshell is just some of the things the Six Nations Wild Office did; should have done and purposely did not do on behalf of the people of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.

New additions to the Two Turtle Art Gallery

SIX NATIONS – With beginnings in 1985, the Two Turtle Art Gallery features the acclaimed work of Onondaga Chief and Artist Arnold Jacobs – whose work mediums have evolved over time just as the Onkwehon:we have.

From soapstone carvings and lithographs to Giclee (jee-clay) and acrylic prints; Jacobs' artwork has taken inspiration from and captured the life of the stories, culture and homelands of the Haudenosaunee people. But something new has entered the gallery.

In the past the Haudenosaunee people identified with their Clans and Nations by adorning their Kastowahs (headdresses) with a certain number of feathers, sitting in a certain area in Kanohses (Longhouse) according to their clan, and hanging emblems of their clans – be they painted or otherwise – outside of their home Kanohses.

This is a practice that Jacobs has modernized with active-wear using clan inspired designs through a line he named Spirit Imagewear.

“I wanted to do an identifying mark for each clan,” said Jacobs.

He explained that with his designs, he hoped to make them unique from other artists and aimed at giving the depicted animals a distinctive feel to their appearance.

“They're contemporary designs – and that's another thing is that I wanted it so that no matter where you go when you're wearing this shirt, it's not an old fashioned design. I wanted to show that our culture works today and it's evolving.”

Jacobs worked with a screen printer to finalize the polo shirts which can be worn during sports like golf or even by sports coaching staff.

“I know a lot of people like to golf and these would fit into that,” he said.

Currently, the Spirit

Imagewear hosts three of the most common Haudenosaunee clans (Turtle, Bear and Wolf Clan), but if interest in the other designs flows through Jacobs will take orders for the other six clans.

As well, there is yet another medium Jacobs offers to show pride in ones clan.

He created a selection of clan pendants he named “Wild Bling,” which are made from sterling silver and can provide both a cultural and tasteful touch to any jewelry collection. All nine clans including the Bear, Wolf, Deer, Turtle, Beaver, Eel, Heron, Snipe, and Hawk Clan are represented in the trade-silver style pendants and the selection may have several choices for each.

Jr. "A" Arrows win Minto Cup

BRAMPTON – The Six Nations Arrows won the 2017 Minto Cup Thursday night in Brampton with a sweep of the Coquitlam Adanacs, defeating them 8-3.

The Arrows were sharp for the entire series, as they breezed through all obstacles along the way.

In Game 1, the Arrows took the best of a 12-7 score last Tuesday, Aug. 22. That was followed by a 9-4 win in Game 2 leading into last Thursday’s 8-3 Minto Cup win.

Coach Pat Merrill could summon up one word to reflect his feeling after the Minto Cup win.

“Relieved” he said.

But he pointed to goalie Doug Jamieson as a major reason for his team’s success all season and through the playoffs.

“Jamieson is the heart and soul of our team this year,” he told the media.

“The sky is the limit for him.”

Jamieson was increasingly outstanding as the games became more important, especially in the playoffs.

“It’s good to go out on top,” Jamieson said of his last season in junior lacrosse. “This is one of the best teams I have ever played for.”

Austin Staats won the Minto Cup MVP honours with 13 points in three games.

He and most of this year’s Minto Cup Arrows mates will not be back next year due to age.

Generally, that makes for a building season to get new younger players comfortable with the speed of Jr. A and the coaching style. But at Six Nations, the talent pool is never shallow so finding a contending team to defend the Minto next year maybe won’t be as big of a problem as it is with other OLA teams.

The Arrows hedged their bets on this year’s

championship by adding a few major off-reserve contributors like Cory Highfield who worked most of the season alongside Austin Staats in one of the most respected lines in the league.

Highfield finished the regular season with 22 goals ad 30 assists, most of them to or from Staats. In the playoffs Highfield went 12-25 for 37 points in eight games.

It was a very close first period in Game 3, which began with Holden Garlent and Cody Ward

taking the spotlight for the Arrows to put the Adanacs behind 2-0 and bringing the large Six Nations crowd into the game. Coquitlam pushed back in the second half of the period to take a 3-2 first period lead. Keenan Koswin, John Hofseth and Ethan Ticehurst scored for Coquitlam.

With both Adanacs’ goalie Christian Del Bianco, and Arrows Doug Jamieson, on top of their games, it was not going to be an easy game to win. The only goal of

the second period was scored by Six Nations’ Austin Staats, assisted

by Owen S. Hill.

Del Bianco was standout in the early third period but the Arrows exploded with three goals in three minutes to break the hearts and the hopes of the B.C. squad. Owen S. Hill, game MVP, started the onslaught with an outside rocket at 6:18 assisted by Travis Longboat. Russ Oaks scored another outside goal at 7:15 from Tahoke Nanticoke and Austin Staats

which Hill followed with his second of the game from Cory Highfield and Ward, catching a pass on the edge of the crease, twisting his body and letting it go in one motion.

Jamieson was unbeatable against some very good B.C. scoring chances and by 17:48 it became clear there would be a party at Six Nations. Holden Garlent put a clearing pass over to Jeremy Bomberry on the right side. Suddenly, Staats burst through the Adanacs defense and began calling for the ball.

Bomberry obliged and Staats made it 7-3.

The last goal of the game was a strange one.

Coquitlam was called for too many men, with less than two minutes remaining. After a conference of officials along the boards, the referee signalled an automatic goal, as the rulebook states. It was awarded to the last Arrows player to have the ball, which was Tyson Bomberry, at 19:16, completing he scoring at 8-3.

Many of this year’s Arrows are either already spoken for at the NLL level or will higher on the pick list that they maybe were before their OLA Jr. A playoffs and Minto Cup performances.

Chiefs have mountain to climb for Mann Cup

By Jim Windle SIX NATIONS – It has not been an easy season for the Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs.

The Oakville Rock forced a Game 7, which the Chiefs won with a huge third period to advance to the Major Series Lacrosse semi-finals against the Peterborough Lakers.

To make it even more difficult on themselves, the Chiefs lost the first three games of a best-of-seven playoff, 10-7 in Game 1, 9-7 Thursday night, and 11-8 in Game 3, Sunday.

With no margin of error, the Pro-Fit Chiefs must win the next four straight games if they are to complete the task of defending the Mann Cup. That is a hard target against any team, but against the Lakers, it will be near impossible.

That challenge started Tuesday August 29 at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena (ILA) in a game that missed our deadline. If the Chiefs start winning, Game 4 will be Thursday Aug. 31

The Six Nations Chiefs found themselves on the edge of a 3-0 precipice Tuesday night at the ILA in a must win game that will miss our deadline.

The Chiefs went seven against the Oakville Rock and if they are going to survive they need the next four wins against the Peterborough Lakers.

In the end, the Chiefs prevailed with a huge third period to eliminate the

Rock 11-7.

Nick Rose and Dillon Ward got the starts in goal after an amazing goaltenders clinic they both put on

in Game 6.

Dan Coates put the first mark on the game sheet at 6:46 when he was called for holding. The second

mark was Wesley Berg’s powerplay goal scored at 6:46.

Jeremy Noble potted back-to-back goals at 11:43 and at 13:31 to suddenly hold a 3-0 lead.

Craig Point got the Chiefs going with a powerplay goal from Dan Dawson and Ryan Benesch with 4:29 remaining in the first period. Pat Corbett brought the Chiefs back to within one, scoring from Vaughn Harris and Leo Stouros with three minutes left.

It was an end-to-end first period battle with Ward facing 15 shots while Rose dealt with 12.

Connor Fields and Dhane Smith traded goals seconds apart and it was 4-3. Berg made it 5-3 and Kyle Jackson answered for Six Nations to keep the score close at 5-4 halfway through the game.

Vaugh Harris, who has had a knack at scoring timely goals, tied the game at 5-5 at 16:57 from Dan Dawson and Ryan Benesch.

Chiefs for Mann continued from page 25 A too-many-men bench penalty gave Oakville a late period opportunity, but the Rock was kept at bay. There was a late flurry of Six Nations shots as the period ended but Rose kept the ball out.

The entire season came down to 20 minutes for one of these teams. The Chiefs knew it and there is enough talent and team pride to find what was needed to win. Craig Point, Vaughn Harris, Dan Dawson, and Ryan Benesch left the Rock in the dust with a 9-5 lead.

Knowing they had their backs pressed firmly to the wall, began extra attacker chances which paid dividends with two extra man goals, but they also gave up two with goals against scored by Kyle Jackson and Harris.

Game 1 against the Lakers was played Tuesday, Aug. 22 at the ILA, and although the Chiefs started well, a poor second period defensively cost them a game they should have won.

The Chiefs opened a 4-0 first period gash in the side of the Lakers with first pe-

riod goals by Dan Dawson, Jordan Durston, Ryan Benesch, and Randy Staats.

The Lakers came alive late in the period when Mark Steenhaus put the first mark on the scoreboard for Peterborough to end the first period with the Chiefs up 4-1.

Between periods, the Lakers got better but the Chiefs didn’t. Adam Jones, Holden Cattoni and Shawn Evans made it a new game.

Six Nations’ Kyle Jackson and Dan Dawson, with his second of the night, put the Chiefs back in the lead, but not for long. Jane and Kyle Buchanan evened the score again.

Ryan Benesch put the Chiefs up by one with a powerplay goal but Curtis Dickson and Thomas Hoggarth closed out the period with the Lakers up 8-7.

Adam Jones accounted for both Peterborough third period goals while Evan Kirk kept the door closed on Six Nations shooters to power the Lakers’ 10-7 win.

The series moved to Peterborough for the second game, Thursday, Aug. 24.

Once again, the Chiefs

kept it close for two periods before running completely out of gas in the third. It was 3-2 at the first intermission with the Chiefs leading, and 7-5 with 20 minutes left.

Harris and Randy Staats put the Chiefs up 6-3, but Cattoni took advantage of a Paul Dawson holding penalty. Kyle Jackson scored from Harris and Dan Dawson but the Lakers responded to bring the teams 6-5. Dan Dawson ended the period with the Chiefs still holding a 7-5 lead.

That was all the Chiefs had left as the Lakers cruised to a 9-7 win with a four goal third period while Matt Vinc stonewalled the Chiefs in the final 20 minutes.

On to Sunday’s Game 3 in Peterborough and the pattern was the same. The Chiefs were winning 6-5 after a 2-2 first period. Peterborough unleashed the first five goals of the final frame. Dan Dawson and Kyle Jackson saved some face for the Chiefs but Adam Jones put the game to rest at the 18-minute mark for the 11-8 final.

Presidents Cup opens at ILA

By Jim Windle SIX NATIONS – The 2017 Presidents Cup playoffs began this past weekend with teams representing Canada’s top Sr. B teams from Nova Scotia to British Columbia all vying for the Presidents Cup. The Six Nations Rivermen secured the trophy in 2015, which was taken from them last year by the St. Albert Miners. The Kahnawake Mohawks won the silver while the Brooklin Merchants earned the Bronze.

This year, the list of qualifiers for the Cup includes Kahnawake, the Ladner Pioneers, Can/ Am champion Native Sons, the Nova Scotia Privateers, the Saskatoon Brewers, defending Champs, the St. Albert Miners, the St. Regis Braves, plus the OLA Sr. B Champion Six Nations Rivermen and the host Can/Am Slash.

The Can/Am Six Nations Slash won the right to host the annual event for 2017 and as such will also compete as the host team.

The event opened at 9 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 27 with the St. Regis Braves against the Kahnawake Mohawks. St Regis won a close 10-9 decision over the Mohawks.

That was only a small bump in the road as the Rivermen continued

Dwayne Porter, Wayne Hill, Marty Hill Rodd Squire Jr. and Layne Smith closed out the period with the Rivermen holding an 18-2 lead.

Nova Scotia’s Jeremy Vatour added a second goal at 13:13.

Six Nations began pacing themselves in the third period to conserve energy for the long haul and to avoid injuries.

Wayne Hill and Joel Shepley added third period goals while Drew MacDonald and Breton Penny scored for Nova Scotia.

The next game for the Rivermen had the OLA Sr. B Champions against the Can/Am Champion Native Sons.

The Rivermen got an early drop on the Sons and rode a 6-2 first peri-

od lead to the 11-9 final.

The August 30 Schedule has the Rivermen and the St. Albert Miners going toe-to-toe in the 9 a.m. game, and the Slash taking on Saskatchewan at 3 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 31, Nova Scotia and the Slash go at it at 3 p.m., and at 6 p.m., the Rivermen and St. Regis Braves face off.

Sept. 1, Kahnawake and the Rivermen meet at 3 p.m.

Saturday, Sept 2, the Can/Am Six Nations Slash take on the OSBLL Six Nations Rivermen at 9 a.m., then at 5 p.m., the Rivermen and Saskatchewan tango.

The last game slated will be the Slash and Ladner Pioneers at 8 p.m.

Slash slow start for Presidents Cup

The Can/Am Six Nations Slash have done the entire community of Six Nations a good turn by applying for, and getting to host, this year’s Presidents Cup Tournament.

For a long time, contributions to sports entities has been seen as a “feel good” expenditure which makes the community look good, that is if the local council decides if it has the “extra” money to contribute.

In more recent times, the spin-off revenues to a host community for such events have been gathered and examined as a revenue source, and not a necessary expenditure.

At Six Nations, local businesspeople regularly give to minor sports and that is highly commendable. Arrows Express, The Dreamcatcher Foundation, and other private supporters of local sports make Six Nations a sports centre, certainly among reserves.

But can more be done?

Several years ago, I read an article from Kamloops, B.C., where the city fathers (and mothers) took a second look at the economic potentials of hosting major sporting tournaments.

They applied to the province to ask for the official title of, Kamloops, the Tournament Capital of B.C. I was working at the old Brant News at that time and researched the piece, which I found intriguing. At the time Brantford had a young, forward thinking mayor who really supported local sports and I thought, why not “Brantford, Ontario’s Tournament Capital?”

After calling the mayor of Kamloops, and getting all kinds of financial impact statistics from their research, I made some competitive analysis of Brantford as it compares with Kamloops.

At the time, the two cities were equal in population, sports facilities, hotels and motels, restaurants and other related services.

According to the then mayor of Kamloops, the rewards from changing

their opinion from sports donations to investment in sports tourism, were almost immediate, and significant.

I wrote an article about it and soon Pat Schewchuk came to the office to talk to me about the article. She took the ball and ran with it creating what is now, “Brantford, The Tournament Capital of Ontario.”

Since it’s creation, The Tournament Capital Committee has actively lobbied for dozens of tournaments of all kinds on behalf of leagues or teams. The Committee helps with organizers with their years of experience and know how, to help plan.

Brantford has since added many more sports fields, soccer and ball parks and indoor and outdoor arenas and the Tournament Capital organization is still growing and has become one of the jewels in Brantford’s crown.

Having said all that, I can see the Six Nations sporting community is already very successful in bringing tournaments to “da rez.”

But it could be done much more efficiently if there was an organization set to kick into gear to support the work of teams and leagues bringing tournaments here.

It would be an organization of event volunteers who have done it before many times and know how to do it. They would help with filling out the applications and make available lists of nearby food and lodging locations, maps, tournament contact lists, maybe even help with some give-away packages for visiting teams or athletes. Team liaisons would be assigned to each visiting team, equipped with knowledge of the history and uniqueness of the Grand River Territory.

The cultural and economic spin-offs of such a volunteer organization can be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual revenue. But it will take cooperation and a further development of what is already going on at Six Nations to maximize the effort.

Razor Hess KOs Marlon Pacheco in third

By Jim Windle BRANTFORD – BlackEye Boxing Club’s fight card held at the Brantford Curling Club in Brantford Saturday was their best boxing event to date.

Despite being held on the same night as the McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather pay-for-view fight, the biggest payday in boxing history, several hundred boxing fans turned up at the Curling club. Many were there to cheer on Six Nations fighter Karl “The Razor” Hess in his last amateur fight before turning pro.

Others were on hand to

encourage Karl’s cousin, heavyweight Paul Longboat in his first amateur fight, plus 12 other bouts at all ages and weights.

Several fans we spoke to said they were going home after the Brantford fights to meet up with friends around a big screen TV somewhere to watch McGregor and Mayweather.

Either way, it couldn’t have worked out better for promoter Jackie Armor from Black-Eye Boxing.

Hess finished his amateur career with a knock out in the third round over his opponent, while

cousin Longboat suffered a loss, but fought well considering his inexperience.

Armor hugged Longboat long and hard after the referee ended the fight in the second round against a more experienced boxer. Longboat was hit hard and took the full impact of the solid blow. The referee decided, since it was Longboat’s first bout, he did not want to see him hurt or discouraged.

“I know he was discouraged at one point in the fight but we got him back on track in the corner and I thought he

fought well,” said Armor.

“When he looks at the video, he will see a lot of things he did right. I am very proud of him and he will only get better every time out.”

In the main event, Marlon Pacheco, a London fighter, was a replacement for Hess’ initial opponent. It was to be a rematch against Jeffrey Roland, whom Hess beat at the last Black-Eye Boxing card. He suffered a concussion in a recent bout and was not allowed to fight so soon afterwards by Boxing Ontario who sanctioned Saturday’s card so Armor had

to scramble to find another boxer who was ready to go.

Pacheco was certainly no slouch, he had good poise in the ring and connected more than twice with hard shots to the head. Hess was ready as well and unwilling to end his amateur career with anything but a win.

Clearly the favourite, Hess entered the ring to the loud applause of his growing fan base, his teammates and his proud Six Nations family.

“I felt pretty good going in,” said Hess after the fight. “He got to me a couple of times but I wasn’t

Slash 13-7. It was hard to get a read on the Slash when they spent so much time in the penalty box, ironically most for slashing. Three of them were committed by Brock Boyle, and a five-minute slashing major to Darcy Belyea, which turned into three Miners powerplay goals.

It was 3-0 after the first period and 9-2 after 40 minutes. Jacob Bomberry and Jeff VanEvery

scored for the Slash.

Six Nations had a better showing in third with Michael McLaughlin, Travis Bland Torry VanEvery, with two, and Brock Boyle scoring for Six Nations. Ben Snider, Darren Kinnear and Jason Williamson added Miners goals for the 13-7 final. The Miners outshot the Slash 46-38.

Slash goalie Mitch Hanigan faced 45 shots while Matt Hiebert dealt

with 38 Slash shots.

It was a busy Monday for the host Six Nations Slash starting with a 12-9 loss to St. Regis in the morning and a 16-8 loss to Kahnawake that night.

After watching the opening games of the tournament, an educated guess would be the Six Nations Rivermen and the St. Albert Miners facing off for the Presidents Cup next week.

OFNLP2008 is a special entity that was established in 2008 to distribute the funds that it receives from the Province of Ontario to the First Nation Partners. OFNLP2008 also manages and directs several major initiatives as mandated by the First Nation Partners. OFNLP2008 is a major, high profile organization among Ontario First Nations and operates in a highly dynamic environment. OFNLP’s 2008 head office is located on the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation territory, southwest of Hamilton, Ontario.

The Finance Clerk fulfills a key support role within the Finance Department and within the organization. This position provides the successful candidate an opportunity to broaden financial acumen, gain experience in accounting and an understanding of key accounting functions.

Under the general and direct supervision of the Finance Officer the Finance Clerk performs a variety of accounting and bookkeeping work. Responsible for recording transactions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, bank reconciliation’s, HST/GST reconciliation’s, expense claim processing, invoices and preparation of monthly financial statements. Performs other related financial/ bookkeeping and related clerical duties, such as word processing, data entry into excel spreadsheets, maintaining filing. Work with little supervision and as a team member. Maintains confidentiality at all times.

Candidates must have completed the twelve (12th) grade and have one or two (1-2) years proven experience in an organization performing duties comparable to those of a Finance Clerk; and • Graduation from an accredited and recognized community college with a Diploma or Certificate in Bookkeeping and/or Basic Accounting at an intermediate level.

• Candidates must should have experience and be familiar with accounting software and preferably skilled in Sage 300 ERP (AccPac).

• Candidates must should be skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel (VLOOKUPs & PIVOT TABLES), and PowerPoint) • Candidates must be able to provide own transportation and willingness to utilize own vehicle as needed in connection with employment and be willing and able to travel.

• Candidates should also be aware of and have respect and sensitivity for Aboriginal culture, heritage, traditions and protocols.

• Compensation for this position will be in the $35,000 to $40,000 per annum range subject to salary guidelines, qualifications and experience.
