Bridging the gap between youth and justice service workers

By Jayson Koblun BRANT PARK – The Brant Youth Wellness Coalition partnered with various community organizations to help build friendships among themselves and at risk youth by canoeing parts of the Grand River last week. The event was called CaNEW Friends on the Grand.

On Wednesday, August 10, about 120 participants, including those from Brantford City Police Services, Six Nation Police Services, youth workers and justice service workers and teenagers from Brantford, New Credit, Six Nations and more travelled to Paris, Ont., where they began their paddle.

“We started in Paris and canoed here to Brant Park,” said Brad Cotton, Sergeant with Brantford City Police Services and one of the founders of the Brant Youth Wellness Coalition. “The focus of today’s canoe trip is to bridge the gap between at risk youth and justice participants of all kinds.

We want to establish some good relationships with each other — the youth and ourselves included.”

Each youth was teamed with one police officer, justice worker or youth worker as they canoed.

After CaNEW Friends on the Grand concluded, everybody gathered in Brant Park to have lunch and enjoy a social with dancing, music and storytelling. “I was partnered with a First Nations youth and it was great. He told me about his culture and he shared that part of himself with me,” said Bromby. “He shared with me his story and we ended up having some things in common — like being a part of certain social systems that we didn’t want

to be in at young ages.”

Part of the coalitions vision is to strengthen youth and help strengthen partnerships within families. Nineteen different organizations participated in last week’s canoe trip.

“The coalition was started as a result of a rash of incidents we had as a police service in 2012 and 2013 involving social media,” said Cotton. “A group of us got together

recognizing that there was an issue with how youth maneuver around social media and decided to host a conference that would help youth learn how to survive social media.”

The goal was to educate not only youth, but also those that work with youth in any form.

“It snowballed from there and we’ve done several other events since the coalition was

first started. This is our first year putting on the CaNEW trip and we look forward to doing it again next year.”

Janna Miller, police constable with the Six Nations Police was contacted by the committee and asked to join them to build friendships with the local youth.

“We’re trying to show that we can all work and get along together,” said Miller. “It’s not just police

workers here today, there are youth workers, youth lodge workers, shelter workers and more. So many youth come into contact with us and these organizations and we want the youth to know and trust all of the services that are out there being offered to them.

“Today was great, once you were in the canoe there was lots of time to get to know one another,” said Miller.

Good sportsmanship at Firefighter Competition

By Chezney Martin OHSWEKEN – Threat of rain and thunder didn't stop the National Firefighter Competition from commencing on Saturday, August 13, as the competition had a back up plan — to move from the Six Nations Fire and Emergency Services parking lot to indoors at the Gaylord Powless Arena.

The move to the GPA was commended by Representative of the Atlantic Aboriginal Firefighters Associate Allan Peterson, who has also been the Fire Chief in New Brunswick for 17 years.

“It's an excellent job that they did,” said Peterson. “They even had that contingency plan; if something didn't work outside they had the plan to bring it inside to the arena, it was perfect,” he said. “It seems like every year it's still exciting to watch all of the teams competing.”

The arena floor had been transformed to host the teams in booths, with a split down the middle for two teams to go head to head. Peterson then said that this very competition has to be his 17th, and each year the teams compete in renditions of what are called evolutions, from the “bucket relay” to “hitting the target.”

“We have a manual, and there's probably about 12-15 evolutions,” “When we have the AGM meeting, we have the evolutions picked from sort of like [picking straws], and from there each of the team captains picks one and we go with the first four,” he said, further stating that they pick an extra to be prepared for a tie.

But it isn't all about the competition, explained Peterson.

“The whole team is having fun,” he said.

“When we go out there I tell them 'go out there and have fun, if the win happens good, if not, don't worry about it. We're out there to have fun, that's the main thing,” he said, adding that the meetings that are held before the competition are also vital.

“We have the emergency missions operations too, and if any of the communities straight across Canada need any help in any which way; with proposals and what not, then we're all here to help the communities,” he said.

But to get to to the National Competition, Blaine Wiggins, Executive Director of the Aboriginal Firefighters Association of Canada said a team has to first get through Regionals.

“We have eight regions across Canada that come,” said Wiggins. “Seven of them are provinces that are based on INAC regions and then the Atlantic region and Nunavut, so we have a team from the Arctic here,” he said.

“So, really the eight teams that are here represent a ton of other teams that have competed and [each team] should base their experience on professionalism and technique.”

“They're here to basically compete for the National Aboriginal Firefighter Championship,” he said. “One of the other things that they're competing for and is probably the most coveted, is the Most Sportsman-like Team, because that's more about showing who they are and what they can do and that's also about their attitude,” he said.

“The purpose of it is to give our First Nations communities the opportunity to show case fire service, and not only the pride that they have, but also the work that they do,” he said.

Wiggins said that this is the 27th time the competition has happened and the evolutions have always been focused on the development of usable skills.

“Unlike the firefighter competitions you see on TV where they're running up and down and carrying hoses, this and that; our evolutions are based on fire-ground skills. And actually, the more running that you do, the more you're gonna lose here because we don't do that on the actual ground. It really does emulate what they actually have to perform,” he said.

At the end of the day and after being up against the other eight teams, the Six Nations Emergency Firefighters came to perform at their best and won the competition to be 2016 National Firefighter Champions!

Business owner seeks compensation due to roadwork

OHSWEKEN – Notice a problem, understand that problem and then solve it – that’s how Randy Johnson is asking Six Nations Elected Band Council to help him in his current situation.

Johnson, owner of Sunrise Trading Post in Ohsweken, has seen a rapid decline in business and customers since construction on 4th Line and Chiefswood Rd. began five and a half weeks ago. He came to last night’s general council meeting asking for compensation for business he has lost due to construction.

“Last week I made $20, the week before I made $30 and the week before I made nothing,” he said.

Johnson understands that this road work desperately needs to be done, so he is not acting out in anger, just as a concerned businessman who relies on profit from the months

the process to receive welfare. Councillor Bob Johnson asked him the total amount of compensation he is thinking about asking for and he responded by saying that he would like elected council to consider $1,000 per week of construction, for a maximum of $10,000.

Johnson’s biggest concern is the lack of a parking lot; stating that much of his business relies on customers being able to walk into his store so he can tell them all about his art pieces and items and make the sale.

He said that since he rarely leaves the community that almost all of his profits end up going directly back into Six Nations.

“My business just looks closed,” he said. “Even though I have a little open sign, it looks closed due to all the mess and construction.”

Councillors Wray Maracle and Melba Thomas asked the concerned business owner some ques-

tions. Maracle wanted to know whether or not Johnson has considered moving his business until construction is completed and Thomas wanted to know if he could approach Community Living, a nearby organization, and share parking lot space with them. Johnson said that as an independent businessman for more than 25 years, he doesn’t like the idea of becoming somebody else’s burden.

“I don’t want to put a burden on someone else’s business,” he said. “I’ve always supplied for myself and I don’t like to be intrusive.”

As for moving his business until construction is over, Johnson said that something like that would have cost a great deal of money.

Elected council did not make a decision and said that they will discuss the issue and reach out to Johnson later.

Editorial by Jonathan Garlow Early morning games are tough for everyone. The Six Nations novice were down three goals. In the second period they started moving better and everyone laughed when a hockey dad shouted "Lookout, the mush is startin' to kick in!"

Mush.

You can tell a lot about a people group by their food. Mush is a food that we've all had to explain to our non-native friends as a teenager. Mush, is what others call "hot cereal" and is synonymous with oatmeal. To me, and many other reservation Indians that is the sacred morning ceremony — cooking mush with a wooden spoon.

Spending time around my father’s generation has taught me that there are many kinds of mushes. The only explanation I can come up with is that we took the horrible oatmeal from the Mush Hole a.k.a. the Mohawk Institute and spent the next few centuries perfecting it into something digestible like a cruel cultural fetish.

We have our own true mushes made from white corn, but this article isn’t about that.

Here is a small summary of the colonial mushes that I am familiar with. Please remember this is not a complete list of all mushes.

Large Flake oatmeal is the one that takes 10 minutes to cook, but it’s worth the extra love. The quick 1 minute oatmeal is rolled thinner, but the large flake is natural and gnarly.

Red River is the mush with little seeds and you got ‘ta be in the mood to chew. This mush was created in 1924 in Manitoba no less.

Cream of Wheat is my personal favourite. I would consider this a tier 2 mush, because it requires extra precision and timing when cooking to avoid lumpiness. Lumpy cream of wheat is a sin against humanity and against the Quakers.

Quaker Oat Bran is one step up the food chain to all other mushes. It’s similar to Cream of Wheat in cooking difficulty, but has a delicious oaty flavour.

If you can cook Oat Bran without a single lump, you can pretty much do anything.

If you cannot afford these big budget mushes, you can buy plain corn meal and use it like Cream of Wheat. It’s basically a yellow mush.

I cannot write a story of mush without mentioning a curious style cooked by the ’69 Corner Garlows.

It’s called “Witch Witch” soup and seems to be made with flour and it tastes as horrible as it sounds.

So that is the TRT mush round up and we recommend putting milk and brown sugar on everything but keep in mind that these mushes are colonizing foods that are terrible for our indigenous digestive systems.

manufacturing consent by interfering in Clan business, blocking speakers in council, and not being transparent and open in sharing information with certain Clan families on pending deals.

HDI’s devious manipulations continue to encourage chaos within the Confederacy and promote discord amongst people whose lives are being impacted by their schemes. It is clear that these tactics are being undertaken to permit HDI to feign consensus to potential investors while excluding a large chunk of the Confederacy family.

Here is the definition of fraud according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary: “fraud: a) deceit, trickery; specifically: an intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another to part with something of value or to surrender a legal right b) an act of deceiving or misrepresenting.”

HDI and its supporters are interfering in Clan

business by attempting to influence the selection of new Chiefs to ensure Chiefs sympathetic to the HDI cause are chosen.

They have resorted to purposefully stalling on HCCC’s duty to stand up new Chiefs (who represent Clans concerned with HDI activities) by failing in this time of critical pending decisions; to conduct in a timely manner, the condolence ceremony for the Onondaga Beaver, Mohawk Turtle and Onondaga Deer Clan.

People are being misled, paid, pressured and used by HDI to support their new world order version of the Confederacy Council, based on an “ends justifies the means” organizational mantra with the singular goal of obtaining wealth.

Aaron Detlor as lawyer for the HDI does not have authority to direct the roles and participation of individuals at Confederacy Council.

As a lawyer he has not fulfilled his role to advise and present both the ben-

efits and the risks of proposed business ventures.

His actions have violated peoples trust and go beyond his role as a legal advisor.

He is attempting to direct the roles of Chiefs, benchwarmers, Clans and individuals. His actions seek to subjugate the people and force compliance with his desired outcomes.

Due to the many ongoing concerns of the people it is imperative that all Chiefs, Clan Mothers, shareholders, employees of HDI and those receiving honoraria do now cease and desist from supporting and participating in all activities of HDI. The people whose voices are being continually ignored, belittled, suppressed and deviously silenced are demanding it.

He is a Mohawk by blood and an Iroquois by law, for Gayanerekowa is also known as the Great Law, is the Constitution of the Kanonsonnionwe or the Iroquois Confederacy. By the same token, if an individual or a whole Nation leaves the Iroquois Confederacy and in time realizes their great error and decide to be reinstated, they would be required to go through the Naming Ceremony or in their case, a re-naming ceremony and hold the Pledge Wampum and re-accept the Great Law and this act could be called the Iroquois Pledge of Allegiance.

This signifies and provides that should any of the chiefs of the League leave the Council and the League, his crown of deer's antlers, the emblem of his chieftainship title, together with his birthright, shall lodge on the arms of the union chiefs whose hands are so joined. He forfeits his title and the crown falls from his brow, but it shall remain in the League.

A further meaning of this is that if, at any time, anyone of the chiefs of the League choose to submit to the law of a foreign people, he is no longer in but out of the League and persons of this class shall be called, "They have alienated themselves" (Tehonatonkoton).

Likewise, such persons who submit to laws of foreign nations shall forfeit all birthrights and claims of the League of Five Nations and territory.

You, the League of Five Nations Chiefs, be firm so that if a tree should fall upon your joined hands,

it shall not separate you or weaken your hold.

So shall the strength of union be preserved.

Note: This means that the Indians who follow the laws made by foreigners and it includes Canada's Indian Act and the United States Federal Indian Law have alienated themselves from their own nations. That is why an Indian such as a Mohawk who voted in the elections devised by the Canadian or United States governments have to be reinstated in a special ceremony to regain their lost Iroquois citizenship which they lost by the simple act of voting in the Canadian Band Council or United States Tribal Council elections, as well as voting in Canada's national or the United States national elections. "Code" means a body of laws or a nation.

Accepting the Handsome Lake Code which is a Quaker Code is a violation of this Wampum 58 of the Great Law. SN Elected Councillor Helen Miller gives report for June and July 2016

By Helen Miller, District 4 Councillor First Nations (FNs) chiefs, councils and educators all across the country are excited with the announcement of the $8.4 billion in funding by the new Liberal government. Bit of concern that the FN leaders are putting so much hope and faith in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and our newly-appointed Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett. We have to remember that the leaders may have changed but the bureaucrats working behind the scenes are the same ones with the same mindset as the former Conservative government.

Assembly of First Nations (AFN): In July this assembly was in Niagara Falls and hosted by Six Nations. In addition to attending the assembly all day I attended the First Nations Gaming Saskatchewan Experience information session where gaming representatives

proposed the establishment of a National Gaming Association that gives FN jurisdiction over gaming.

Right now the province claims jurisdiction over all gaming.

Ontario’s Free Tuition Program: I attended this session to find out what the Ontario Free Tuition initiative was about. This initiative is being promoted by Premier Kathleen Wynn. The Federal and Provincial governments have joined forces to transform the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). A few years back I wrote a letter to the newspapers cautioning the post-secondary office against advising our people to access the OSAP program for school funding even though the need was there. At that time I worried if enough First Nations students started accessing the OSAP program the powers that be would one day ask themselves: Why are allocating First Nations post-secondary funding when so

many are willing to borrow money from OSAP? I think the powers that be have smelled the coffee. Data collection shows more than 6,000 self-identified Indigenous students have accessed OSAP. I believe with the provincial and federal governments partnering in the transformation of OSAP it is the beginning of the end of our postsecondary funding as we know it today. I have requested an information session take place with our post-secondary education office staff and board.

I also attended the Youth information session. Six Nations delegation also met with Minister Bennett to discuss several issues but as usual made no commitments regarding the education funding and the lifting of the two per cent cap on education. In June I attended the assembly in Thunder Bay. Reports were made by the Ontario First Nations Young Peoples’ Council.

Councillor Mark Hill and Chezney Martin represent Six Nations. The Ontario First Nation Women’s Council reported on their work. Sandy Martin, director at Ganohkwasra represents Six Nations.

Education: One of the problems Grand Chief of the AIAI Gord Peters said is that FN doesn’t have education systems; what we have, he said, is education funding.

Presentations and resolutions were done on Charting Our Own Path Forward, Post- Secondary Student Support Program and the High Cost of Special Education. These priority issues/resolutions

were forwarded to the AFN agenda.

High Cost of Special Education: There was concern expressed that some FNs communities always have a surplus at the end of the school year.

This surplus has to be returned to INAC. There is an estimated surplus of $1 million to $5 million being returned. COO’s FNs Coordination Unit wants the surplus funding to be reallocated to FNs. Currently I am in the process of completing a pros and cons paper on Six Nations assuming responsibility for education.

This is based on what I have heard and learned over the past few years.

I’ve attended a lot of meetings on education and I sit on several education-re-

lated committees as well as my other nine internal/ external committees. Locally, I’ve dealt with several issues and concerns raised by people from all districts. I don’t just help people from my district; I try to help everyone. So this report is just a snapshot of the work I’ve done this period.

In the near future there are critical decisions that SNEC and the community will have to make about education. But right now there is more work to be done. This is why at our July meeting the Education Committee decided to recommend to SNEC that Six Nations not move forward with education until the 57th Elected Council is in place. This motion was carried.

What is the Haudenosaunee Confederacy: Part Two

There are several groups that claim full ownership over land rights and traditional titles of the Haudenosaunee. We spoke with Loran Thompson, Paul Delaronde and Jagwadeth Sandy to hear another teaching about the confederation of the Haudenosaunee people, the Great Law, and the people’s responsibilities within it. Here is Part Two of that ongoing series.

TRT: What is one of the biggest threats facing the Confederacy?

Thompson: Today we have a thing that is troubling us in all of our areas as Iroquois. And its called corporation.

One family brought it in at Akwesasne and a small group of people tried to get rid of it because they understood what it was actually bringing.

We have to first understand ‘what the heck is corporation?’ and what does it stand for? What kind of laws do they have to follow? They don’t follow our laws. They have to, under law, follow the white man’s law. So that corporate structure is not an Indian.

So as not being an Indian they can not own any land as an Indian. They become taxable. That’s the danger of corporate structure trying to come inside the circle.

We have to be very care-

ful in that area. It’s very difficult to try to relate to it because there are people in every one of our areas today that are trying to pull that structure ito the circle and pull in with it the responsibility - a good Canadian’s responsibility - to follow the white mans law and pay their taxes. Their taxes - not ours. That’s the danger of corporation.

TRT: Can you explain a bit about the need for unity inside the Confederacy and what that means?

Thompson: Inside our circle we have our ceremony and we have our law. And those few people that are left that still respect the clan system understand the clan system know that their voice comes form that clan system Another issue that breaks us up is when the longhouse was formed all of those different indians that were within that house were convinced to take a hold of the law Kaienerekowa - and live that law and in doing so they gave up their interests to say “Im a Mohawk”, “I’m an Oneida” “I’m a this and I'm a that” and “this land is my authority” - they gave that up to become a part of the whole. Which gave the birth to the Iroquois Confederacy. That’s how that comes to light. They made all the land - one. All one.

when our people, when I say our people in that context, we are all one regardless of what area you come from. If you are fighting for an issue that involves all of our interests you are not separate and everyone should understand that and come to your backing and support you.

But what has happened is there is a mix up inside the circle.

A lot of our people have accepted BIA or DIA and have accepted quasi-soverign status and have joined those entities and are trying to say they’re still a part of the Iroquois Confederacy. They can’t.

But what has happened in recent is our people have gone to fight for some issues on some land, Iroquoian land, and then one of these people that are in compromise will come and they will fight, “You have no authority, that’s our land.”

Say for instance it was a Mohawk and an Oneida.

Mohawk fighting for land — an Oneida representative comes across and says, “You have no right to that land — that’s Oneida land.” That’s not right. Because our ancestors said, if you're going to be inside of the circle, our ancestors said its one land. It’s Kanotionionwe land - We are all in one house. That’s how they bring it into your mind. We are all one people in one house, one people in one land. So whats happening is there is a confusion that is going on. And those people in political positions of responsibility in Kanotionionwe issues don’t know enough today.

And that’s not putting

them down! That’s just the reality. It’s not their fault that they don’t know! We have been five, six, seven hundred years under oppression. There has been a plan in place to dumify you. To get you to forget everything you are.

TRT: What can we do to carry on our responsibilities as Haudenosaunee of the Confederacy?

Thompson: What we remember today is very important to keep alive

and to bring back to life and to put it back in gear, to bring it back into reality because that is our survival. That is the foundation we stand on as a people that are still sovereign in our own land. It’s a position that no other people in any land can take except us in this land.

There is no other land that we can go home to and say - “this land it ours”. The Europeans of any country that are visiting in any of our lands can go home at

any time and say “this is my home land”. We can’t do that. Because this land we stand on is our home. And we all, each and every one of us have a responsibility that is beyond the dollar.

That is beyond whatever has been taught to us by the oppressor. We have to go back and dig up who and what we are and stand on that.

Fall Fair sneaks up on Six Nations again

By Jim Windle OHSWEKEN – The Six Nations Fall Fair has been one of the jewels in the Six Nations tourism crown for nearly a century and a half and

in that time has brought millions of people to Six Nations for one of Ontario’s oldest Agricultural Fairs.

It has seen better times as attendance and operating capital have

diminished drastically in the past decade or so and is in dire need of life support if it is going to reach its 150th year mark, next summer.

This year’s Fall Fair will be a trimmed down

version due to financial issues making a usual full blown fair event impossible. But organizers are doing the best they can do with limited resources.

There has been very

little pre-event hype and even less advertising to the point where many Six Nations residents themselves don’t seem to know that this year’s fair begins this Friday.

The annual Six Nations Pageant is another former highlight of Six Nations that at one time brought busloads of people from as far away as Europe and Asia as a destination vacation choice.

“For the past few years there have been setbacks,” explained Nicky Skye, VP of the Fair Board. “Big grandstand shows have cost a lot, especially when it rains. Other fair boards are also finding the same financial problems everywhere. These issues are catching up to us now and we are trying to do what we can with a very small budget.”

Bread and Cheese Day — or Victoria Day as Canadians celebrate it — has survived as the big-gest day of the year for Six Nations residents and families as a kind of Home Coming event.

In more recent times things like the Grand River Champion of Champions Pow Wow, Solidarity Day, Veterans Day and other large annual community events have taken the lion’s share of the attention.

A point of contention is the date of the fair.

With a date of August 19 this year, it has become more like a summer fair.

In years past the event highlighted Six Nations agriculture in September.

Although trimmed, there will still be a full card of events this year including the annual baby show, pageant, demolition derby, school exhibits, grandstand show, midway, entertainment, Native crafts, food booths, commercial exhibits, chariot races, amateur harness racing, petting zoo, classic car show, tractor pull, ball tournament and cultural expo.

Six Nations members sue HDI

OHSWEKEN — A lawsuit against members of the Haudenosaunee Development Institute (HDI) was launched on Monday when HDI President Brian Doolittle was served legal papers outlining a series of charges against himself as an executive member of the HDI and 2438543 Inc. Elvera Garlow and Aaron Detlor, also known as Robert Aaron Detlor, were served their papers on Tuesday by legal consultant, Lanny Henderson.

The other named defendant in the case had not been served at press time.

The Class Proceeding allegations include Breach of Contract and Breach of Fiduciary Duty; Breach of Duties of the Haudenosaunee Development Institute; Civic Conspiracy; Conversion; Unjust Enrichment; and Breach of Trust, all totalling more than $100 million in damages.

Although launched by Davie and Monture, the 23-page statement of claim is on behalf of the HCCC — meaning, the People of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.

Under the Class Proceedings Act, 1992, c6, “Class” or “Class Members” refer to approximately 25,000 Haudenosaunee people and individuals encompassing the “HCCC”, under the understanding that the Confederacy is in fact, the people and not the sitting Chiefs who are only the spokes people for their Clans.

The claim is calling for an immediate stop to any and all negotiations made by the HDI and for all funds be frozen in a trust account to be managed and administrated by a yet to be established board made up of rank and file Haude-

nosaunee People.

Lanny Henderson, who is connected with an organization known as the Native Supreme Council (NSC), will be acting as legal advisor to plaintiffs Wilfred Davey and Bill Monture — who have launched the suit.

According to the organization’s website, the NSC says they are free of any religious, or governmental affiliation.

The group was recently created with a mandate to protect Indigenous people and to promote the culture of ancient civilizations while implementing their morals into modern times.

NSC was brought in at the request of the Men’s Fire and others to review the works of the HDI. The Men’s Fire, a Six Nations grassroots watchdog organization, has been trying to access information regarding the workings of HDI’s finances and who is making what from the several land usage deals the HDI has negotiated with energy companies.

Although HDI says their

financial statements have been published on their website, criticisms ave been raised by Haudenosaunee people at Six Nations that the reports are too general and do not go into any sort of detailed explanation as to exactly where the money is going.

Despite HDI insisting they have been totally transparent with their financial disclosures, some community members believe they have been met with nothing but stone walls, secrecy and a complete lack of openness when asking for information about how the HDI is run, and how the money is spent.

Additional concerns have been raised that publisher/editor for a community newspaper on Six Nations, the Turtle Island News, is a paid media liaison for the HDI — raising questions in the community about the neutrality published in the Turtle Island News about the HDI. Other areas of concern raised include the signing of two engagement agree-

ments with Samsung in which the HDI agreed to, on behalf of the HCCC and the Haudenosaunee People, waive Haudenosaunee sovereignty immunity and any other claim or traditional treaty rights surrounding Haudenosaunee Land that the projects are utilizing in exchange for financial compensation.

According to the plaintiffs, members of the HDI never presented nor obtained approval from the HCCC for the Samsung deal before it was signed.

According to the claim, HDI was formed to function and operate in accordance with Haudenosaunee Law. Further, HDI was tasked with the responsibility of establishing a process and structure that protects the rights of Haudenosaunee People.

The creation by Detlor, Brian Doolittle and Hazel Hill of the numbered company 248543 Ontario Inc. and Ogwawigsta Inc. is also being brought into question in the claim, accusing them of doing so to divert funds properly be-

longing to the Haudenosaunee People.

The plaintiffs also state that defendant Elvera Garlow created a numbered corporation; namely Ogwawihsta to divert funds belonging to the HCCC and the Haudenosaunee People.

The plaintiffs claim HDI breached its fiduciary duties to the HCCC and the Haudenosaunee People to act diligently, with honesty and integrity and in the utmost good faith or the benefit of HCCC and the Haudenosaunee People.

The claim states that in or about 2009, the HCCC retained Aaron Detlor to act as their lawyer in exchange for financial compensation to the Haudenosaunee People.

Among others, Articles of the Retainer Agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Detlor laid out several terms of conduct and expectation, including no conflict of interest while under contract.

But at that same time Detlor was also contracted by the Whitefish Lake First Nation on a $14,000 per month retainer plus all travel and expenses, including a “success fee of 6.5 per cent of any financial settlement on a multimillion dollar case.

Detlor personally received $1.4 million for his part in that action.

A third party law firm’s review of Detlor’s Whitefish contract was requested by then Chief Steve Miller, which showed a number of questionable billing practices and a total lack of accountability.

Requests by Six Nations residents to review the contract he signed with the HCCC has been met with stone walling and silence.

The claim goes on to say that there was a promise

made to the people by Detlor and the HDI that they would promptly share with the Haudenosaunee People the knowledge, information and documents which it had or which were available to it concerning any and all negotiations with developers, individuals or governments with respect to Land Use Agreements. This has not taken place.

A Civil Conspiracy has also been alleged in the action stating that the named defendants conspired together creating an interrelated web of corporations, businesses and individuals, the plaintiffs say, while communicating fraudulent and/or negligent misrepresentations with respect to the Samsung deals, accusing those involved in the alleged “conspiracy” with using this network to divert funds.

In following the money, the plaintiffs allege that the defendants wrongfully interfered with the funds of the HCCC and the Haudenosaunee People in a manner inconsistent with the right of possession by taking possession of the funds and dealing with them, creating a further breach of trust.

They are calling for an independent third party audit of all transactions done by Detlor and the HDI between January 2006 and August of 2016.

The plaintiffs have asked that the trial on these and other associated matters take place in Hamilton Court.

Ontario Energy Board updates consultation requirements for oil pipelines THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO — The Ontario Energy Board is issuing new guidelines to better define obligations to consult First Nations communities about ``hydrocarbon pipelines,'' just days after the National Energy Board opened hearings into the $15.7 billion Energy East project.

The provincial board

said the revisions to the Indigenous consultation section of the guidelines issued Thursday will ``streamline and clarify roles and obligations for the Ministry of Energy, the OEB and pipeline proponents.''

The Ministry of Energy will determine if a proposed project triggers a duty to consult, and if so, it will identify the Indige-

nous communities ``whose rights are potentially adversely affected ... and assess the extent of the necessary consultation.''

The ministry will then delegate to the pipeline proponents the responsibility to conduct consultations, which would include meetings with Indigenous communities to assess the potential effects on their rights, keeping the Crown

appraised of the rights asserted by First Nations and discussing options to accommodate those adversely affected.

Pipeline proponents must file a report on the consultations and outline how any concerns raised were addressed or accommodated before a hearing, and any potentially affected First Nations communities will be invited to par-

ticipate in the hearing.

Premier Kathleen Wynne has said Ontario wants to see environmental issues and First Nations concerns addressed in the hearings on TransCanada Corp.'s 4,500 kilometre Energy East pipeline, which would carry Alberta crude oil to Saint John, N.B. Most of the Energy East project in Ontario would involve repurposing an ex-

isting natural gas pipeline with little new construction in the province.

TransCanada officials assured environmentalists during the first three days of hearings in Saint John, which wrapped up Wednesday, that it would be able to have field personnel on site within three hours of a spill and equipment on site within six hours.

The NEB plans additional hearings into Energy East in nine other cities including Montreal and Quebec City, before proceedings conclude in Kingston, Ont., in December.

Class action lawsuit for Sixties Scoop survivors to begin

By Nahnda Garlow TORONTO — A class action lawsuit for survivors of the sixties scoop is approaching its time in court next week.

The case will hear the details of nearly 16,000 First Nations children who were unjustly removed from their homes and communities through Canada’s child welfare policy from the 1960’s through to the 1980’s.

Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day said the practise of the child welfare system during the sixties scoop is a source of great trauma for the indigenous community at large. Day said finding resolution and justice in the courts will be a big step towards recovery and healing for the entire community.

Feds to apologize for forced relocation of Dene people THE CANADIAN PRESS TADOULE LAKE, Man. — The federal government is to formally apologize and provide compensation today for the forced relocation of a First Nations community in northern Manitoba 60 years ago.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett is to fulfil an

agreement reached three years ago with the Sayisi Dene over a forced move that led to death, hunger and violence.

Chief Ernest Bussidor, who was born one month before about 250 residents were forced out of Duck Lake to a barren area near Churchill, said many have suffered post-traumatic stress. ``I probably witnessed

a lot more tragic events than I should have ... and most of us of that generation have that same notion,'' Bussidor said Monday. ``A lot of children died.

That kind of stuff never leaves you.''

The Sayisi Dene were relocated partly because the Manitoba government believed they were causing a steep decline in the

caribou herd _ an idea later proven untrue. In their new location near Churchill, food was scarce and housing inadequate. The Dene turned to scavenging the dump and were assaulted by Churchill residents.

About one-third of the relocated Dene died ``as a result of poverty, racism and violence,'' the Manitoba government said in a

2010 apology for its role. ``People freezing to death, fires, you name it,'' Bussidor recalled.

In 1973, the Sayisi Dene left the Churchill area and moved back to their traditional territory at Tadoule Lake.

The federal apology comes with a $33.6-million settlement package, aimed partly at economic development, which was

Inquest into Winnipeg police shooting

THE CANADIAN PRESS WINNIPEG — A long-awaited inquest into the police shooting death of an indigenous man in Winnipeg won't start until November.

The hearing into the 2008 shooting of Craig McDougall was to begin earlier this month, but has been rescheduled because one witness has changed their statement.

Part of the inquest is to study potential ``systemic racism'' in our justice system.

McDougall, who was 26, was shot at his home after police responded to a report of an altercation.

The officers involved were never charged and police have maintained that McDougall wouldn't drop a knife he was holding.

His family has denied that and the shooting has been criticized by Manitoba indigenous leaders.

Feds announce environmental review panel THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA — The federal Liberals have announced details of a long-promised review to examine environmental assessments for projects from pipelines to new mines.

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna said Monday a four-person panel has been asked to study how the assessments are done to ensure decisions are based on sound science, avoid duplication and serve and involve the public.

The review was included in the mandate letter McKenna received from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when she was appointed to the post last fall.

Neither industry nor environmentalists have been happy in recent years with the way environmental assessments are done. One side says they are too complex and lengthy, while the other says they don't protect fragile ecosystems and leave out important considerations.

During the federal election, Trudeau spoke about the need to reform a process that he said had lost the trust of Canadians.

That promise was repeated in the throne speech.

The first Liberal budget committed $16.5 million over three years to improve consultations already ongoing and support First Nations involvement.

The new review promises extensive opportunities for pubic input, as well as direct consultation with interested organizations. Meetings are to be held in areas where projects have been through an environmental assessment.

The panel will be led by Johanne Gelinas, a former federal commissioner of environment and sustainable development.

Retired Teck Resources vice-president Doug Horswill and environmental and aboriginal lawyers Rod Northey and Renee Pelletier round it out.

The panel is expressly instructed to engage with First Nations individuals and groups. It is also instructed to work together with other reviews be-

ing done by Fisheries and Oceans, Natural Resources and Transport Canada.

The panel is to begin next month and finish by the end of January.

Environmental groups welcomed Monday's announcement.

“This review marks the beginning of a rare opportunity to build a next-gen-

eration environmental assessment law for Canada,” said a statement from Jessica Clogg of the West Coast Environmental Law Association. “With widespread conflict over projects like oil pipelines and dams, the stakes have never been higher.”

Stephen Hazell of Nature Canada said in a re-

lease he was pleased by the panel's makeup and terms of reference.

“We look forward to working with the panel in the coming weeks to develop proposals for the next generation of laws to ensure that development is sustainable and nature is conserved.”

Ottawa releases new medicinal cannabis regulations

OTTAWA — Health Canada announced medical maihuana users can now grow their own medicinal weed.

Starting August 24th, patients can either grow the plant themselves or designate someone to pro-

duce it for them.

The new Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations replaces the previous Canadian regulations.

Patients can also purchase quality controlled cannabis from one of Canada’s 34 licensed producers.

tients and the public should avoid purchasing from illegal "dispensaries" and "compassion clubs” saying those locations are subject to law enforcement actions.

Details on the new regulations will be available on Health Canada’s website August 24th.

'Our duty' to withhold pipeline consent until concerns addressed: N.B. Mi’kmaq THE CANADIAN PRESS SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Mi’kmaq communities in New Brunswick said Wednesday the Energy East pipeline project must have their consent in order to pass through their territories.

Chief George Ginnish, of the Eel Ground First Nation, told National Energy Board hearings in Saint John, N.B., that Mi'kmaq communities remain ``deeply concerned'' about the effect the proposed pipeline will have on their aboriginal and treaty rights.

Ginnish was speaking on behalf of a group of nine communities in eastern and northern parts of the province. ``We have to consider the impact that any projects will have on our next seven generations, it's our duty to our ancestors,'' said Ginnish.

He told the three member panel the Mi'kmaq are concerned about the impacts of the pipeline's construction and the effects of potential oil spills on watersheds and watercrossings as well as on traditional fisheries and species such as Atlantic salmon.

He said there are also concerns about increased tanker traffic in the Bay of Fundy.

The tankers would be used to export crude oil from Western Canada that would be stored at a proposed marine terminal in Saint John. ``Unless all of these concerns can be meaningfully addressed, we cannot and will not consent to the pipeline in our territory,'' Ginnish said.

The chief said that through a series of peace and friendship treaties with the Crown the Mik'maq have nev-

er surrendered their aboriginal title to their lands. ``The Energy East pipeline will cross through our Mi'kmaq traditional lands . . . thus the project will require our consent,'' said Ginnish.

Bruce McIvor, a solicitor for the Elsipogtog First Nation near Rexton, N.B., said the energy board's mandate is limited in relation to the project because of the band's treaty rights.

He said Elsipogtog expects a direct relationship with the Crown in dealing with its pipeline concerns. ``The board . . . cannot fulfil completely the Crown's obligations and we think it's important that's reflected ultimately in the board's report,'' MacIvor said.

Officials with Energy East said they are committed to ongoing consultations with First Nations groups in order to address their concerns.

Christian Matossian, manager of indigenous relations for the Energy East pipeline, said the company respects the legal and constitutional rights of aboriginal communities.

He said the company is operating under current Canadian law with respect to its engagement with aboriginal people. ``Energy East will strive to reach consent with First Nations and also seek to avoid and mitigate any potential effects that the project has on the community,'' said Matossian.

Mi'kmaq groups were not alone Wednesday in bemoaning a lack of specific consultation on the project.

Maria Recchia, of the Fundy North Fishermen's Association, said her group was upset by the company's applica-

tion, which portrayed the fishery in the area nearest to the shipping lanes leading to Saint John harbour as being ``insignificant.''

Recchia pointed out that according to Department of Fisheries and Oceans data, the lobster fishery in the area is heavy in May and June and remains consistently high through the rest of the year.

She said about 75 fishing boats work around the area _ not the 10 or 15 referred to in the company's assessment. ``To say that the fishing industry in this area is insignificant is very problematic for us,'' said Recchia.

Three days of hearings wrapped up Wednesday. The energy board will hold additional hearings in nine other cities with proceedings to conclude in Kingston, Ont., in December.

In his concluding remarks, Energy East president John Soini said he recognized the frustrations expressed by a number of interveners over a lack of information about aspects of the project.

Soini cautioned that the project was still in its early stages and that the company is committed to gathering the information it needs.

He said if approval is granted, construction won't begin until 2019 and full emergency response plans will be in place, including for the tank and marine terminal in Saint John. ``I can confirm that your views have been heard and will inform how we continue to develop the Energy East project in a safe and environmentally sound matter for the benefit of Canada,'' said Soini.

A young man, his girlfriend and other friends drove out to a nearby river. They had fun swimming, talking and visiting as young people have for many years.

In driving home, the vehicle they were travelling in, had a tire blow out. They pulled into a driveway, to get off the road and possibly get assistance.

The homeowner emerged wielding a firearm. The young people panicked and tried to leave hitting a parked car.

Further violence escalated when the homeowner shot a passenger, killing him.

Mainstream media has a duty to provide facts.

Mainstream media has a duty to provide neutral facts.

This message was lost in the recent killing of a First Nation man in Biggar, Saskatchewan.

“Man dead after Shooting on Private Property” writes CBC. Farther in the article, it states that the people involved in the incident, inside the vehicle were also arrested as part of a “related theft incident”. Then the name of the young man is released: Colten Boushie of the Red Pheasant First Nation.

The headline reads “private property” followed by an investigation into “theft”. In the public’s mind this means that there was wrongdoing followed by a shooting.

In Canadian minds, the trespass of property with possible wrongdoing is insinuated in this report.

When the victim’s name is released, heated race relations begin stirring in Saskatchewan.

The public becomes the judge.

This is a continuous problem with mainstream media. Headlines are crafted as judgments.

The ensuing dialogue has been primed to reflect mainstream values.

When the victim’s name is finally released only trespass and theft regis-

ter in people’s thinking.

This is not a new phenomenon. Prior to the use of social media, mostly non-natives have reported on First Nations and their issues. In 2012, when IdleNoMore began to sweep social media, mainstream media floundered to keep up with the movement.

This is the underlying problem. Knowledge of First Nation people in Canada comes from reporters and other institutions trained in First Nation stereotyping.

Mainstream media has not undertaken the time to understand First Nation cultural understanding. It seems enough to hire visible diversity without understanding the root of this diversity.

This problem in mainstream media means that reports are one-sided or that they perpetuate existing Canadian non-native views or that they are negligent.

Following this Saskatchewan report, social media erupted into a race war. Jack Kirby shared News Talk 650 CKOM’s post with this addition:

Guys! Share the $#@# out of this story. 5 natives rolled onto his farm to steal shit and threatened him. He shot one. We need to set a precedent.

We CANT let this guy go to jail. If anyone knows of a “go fund me” campaign please let me know. Donate what you can … If it were your house and the natives broke in Shouldn’t (sic) you have the right to defend yourself and family against five threats?

In response, First Nation relatives and supporters began posting facts about the incident and information about Colten Boushie. Repeated posts about Indians/ natives and white farmers began to divide the incident. In an escalated time frame, racial slurs, hate crime messages and angry dialogue sparked heated debates.

Why was this necessary?

First Nations will no longer stand silent while mainstream media corrupts public opinion with shoddy reporting.

First Nations are taking back their voices. It is important that First Nations have access to media where their concerns, worldview and information can be portrayed in a better setting.

Indigenous media provides this source of communication.

Since IdleNoMore, mainstream media has attempted to report on indigenous events or concerns. How is this possible if mainstream media has no knowledge or training of indigenous worldviews? During IdleNoMore, mainstream media reporters did not know what questions to ask. A grassroots movement had started. The first casualty was mainstream media. They attempted to document the willful blindness of Canadians on First Nation issues that has existed for decades.

This latest incident highlights the futility of reconciliation.

Worldviews and values vested in the land, kinship and laws of Creation are not communicable to mainstream Canada. In other reporting this week, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) discussed appointments to the bench stating that “aboriginal” people need to hone their lower court skills and work “up to” becoming Supreme Court Justices.

If this is true, what training do Supreme Court Justices have in specific First Nation worldviews to make decisions on diverse beliefs of First Nations with regard to land, treaty and other rights? If the SCC judges have worked their way through the courts in the past 30 or 40 years, when have they had time to learn First Nation history and cultural knowledge?

By Danielle Be Caldwell First Nation hosts first ever pow wow on rematriated lands Last weekend, a unique celebration happened; a powwow on land that was rematriated through the settlement of a 200-yearold land claim. The federal government approved a $105 million settlement that provided the opportunity for Caldwell to purchase 200 acres of farmland in Leamington, Ontario.

“This means the world to us, this is what we are trying to do, this is our land, this is our home,” said Janne Peters, Caldwell First Nation councillor. “Our ancestors are in this area so having this today and tomorrow will give our ancestors a bit of closure. Our people were driven from Point Pelee.

This is our home. This is where our ancestors chose to live and to raise their children. This is our home, this is where we belong and today will be the best day ever.”

“When you hear the music, when you hear the drumming, that is at the heart of our spirit and it will go through you and it will attach itself to you, it will be a whole different spiritual experience for anybody. Our ancestors are in this area.”

The Anishnaabek of Caldwell First Nation have historically occupied the territories across Essex and Kent County, near Windsor, Ontario. “The pow wow represents coming back to the land,” said Assistant to the Powwow Co-ordinator Isabel Lewis.

Approximately 6,000 people joined, including a Syrian refugee youth group.

Grandmothers stand up against natural gas pipeline in Walpole Island

Last Monday, a small group of grandmothers stood in front of machinery to stop a proposed natural gas pipeline from breaking ground in their community. “I was just on my way to say my prayers and then

that motor started up and they were going to dig,” said Corrine Tooshkenig, one of the grandmothers.

“I just went and grabbed onto that monster. That’s all I did. I started crying, waving, yelling. You chase unwanted spirits away from you.”

“When I saw the welcoming ceremony in front of the Water Treatment facility, and knowing the history of gas and oil extraction, and the fracking that goes behind it … it is not a friendly enterprise,” said Tooshkenig.

Walpole Island First Nation posted a press release on their website on July 27 announcing their partnership with Union Gas and the approval of the first phase of natural gas infrastructure expansion in the community. The press release goes on to speak of benefits to the Walpole Island community including “decreased overhead for economic development ventures and governance operations,” more affordable heating for homes and an increased ability to attract economic development.

They also announced that the project was funded in collaboration with Aboriginal Affairs and through Walpole Island First Nation band council.

They said that the first phase of the project would include the installation of a pipe underneath the Snye River and that the project would break ground on Monday, August 8. “We are looking out for the safety of our children, or the water, or Mother Earth,” said Grandmother Marie Short. “All those things that were given to us as grandmothers. We have to watch out for our babies.

Where that line is running is right by the school too, so if anybody hits it … kaboom.”

The grandmothers insist that the work is being done without community consultation or consent.

Following the work disruption, Walpole Island First Nation band council hosted community meetings consecutively for two evenings. Upon hearing

from both sides, the band council voted unanimously to continue with the project. The work is set to resume on August 15.

Chief and Council refused the request tor a community vote and went so far as to change the time and location of the second meeting without prior notice.

Following the decision, the grandmothers went to St. Clair River to pray.

“I can’t help but cry,” said Grandmother Marie Short.

“All we can do now is sit back and watch … there’s nothing else we can do.”

Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says RCMP has fuelled racial tensions in Saskatchewan

Colton Boushie, 22, was murdered by 54-year-old Gerald Stanley on August 9 after the car he was in got a flat tire. The group of young indigenous people were approaching Stanley’s farm to ask for help.

Stanley has since been charged with second-degree murder.

“The news release the RCMP issued the following day provided just enough prejudicial information for the average reader to draw their own conclu-

sions that the shooting was somehow justified,” said Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) Chief Bobby Cameron. The group is calling for an immediate review of RCMP communication policies and writing guidelines. They are also demanding an assurance that “this tragedy will be investigated for what it is, a crime based on race.”

The Assembly of First Nations also released a statement calling out the racist comments being made online. “To see racist, derogatory comments about this young man and about First Nations people online and on social media in response to this tragedy is profoundly disturbing,” said AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde.

RCMP Superintendent Rob Cameron read a response that said, “It is a priority for us to work to contribute to the long term wellness and safety of Saskatchewan communities and through an inclusive and culturally competent police service.” However, according to Cameron, “The RCMP news release kind of leads readers to believe a crime was about to be committed and therefore deserved retaliation that obviously re-

sulted in the tragedy of a young man.”

Robert Innes, a University of Saskatchewan Indigenous Studies professor in Regina said, “You can see that the racial tension is basically a tinder box in Saskatchewan.

There’s a real fear and contempt towards Indigenous men by many white people to the point that they will shoot before asking questions. A lot of people who are on social media are happy that this person was shot and believe it was justified. That, to me, is kind of disturbing in a lot of ways.”

Teenage sweethearts killed by trusted friend in Whitefish Lake First Nation

Cory Grey and Dylan Laboucan went missing on July 23 from the trailer where they lived with Laboucan’s parents. They were murdered by Edward Devin Boyce Gladue, a lifetime friend and cousin of Dylan. Laboucan’s body was found on July 25.

Grey’s body was found the next day. Both were found on different well sites on the reserve and had been shot to death.

Gladue called Becky Thunder, Laboucan’s

mother, when her son went missing. The following day he came to the Laboucan’s residence. “He had the nerve to come to my residence and deny everything,” Thunder said.

Before the young couple went missing, they hadn’t seen much of Gladue.

Thunder said friends of her son told her that Gladue was “obsessed” with Laboucan’s girlfriend and was jealous of their success. “Edward had nothing going for him. He was a drop out,” Thunder said. “We will be burying them together because they belong together.”

The young couple had dreams and ambitions.

Both graduated from Grade 12 and had plans to leave the reserve to attend Northern Lakes College.

“These students were taking advantage of every opportunity that was thrown their way,” said high school teacher Dave Hurley. “They were going to post secondary school.

They had beat all kinds of odds.”

Gladue was arrested without incident in Peace River, Alberta. A two day wake was held earlier this month followed by a joint funeral.

Six Nations Music Festival Makes It Through Rain

By Chezney Martin SIX NATIONS – Storm warnings throughout the day didn't keep music lovers of all ages from visiting Chiefswood Park to enjoy the free and fun Annual Music Festival on Saturday, August 13.

Spectators sat in lawn chairs, picnic tables and even on the grass as musicians such as The Stotts, A.K McLeod, The Ollivanders and Missy Knott performed throughout the day rain or shine.

Knott is an award winning Nashville recording artist, who won the Toronto Independent Music Award for best pop album and said she had “an amazing time” performing and enjoying the festival.

“I had an amazing time, it's always an amazing opportunity to come to Six Nations and play at these festivals,” said Knott. “I

Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs last team standing

SIX NATIONS – In stark contrast to the past two or three years of lacrosse dominance at all OLA levels of the game, the baton has been passed to the last Six Nations team standing in the 2016 post season, the MSL Pro-Fit Chiefs.

Decimated by injuries to key players, including scoring leaders Cody Jamieson, Steve Keogh, Jordan Durston, Johnny Powless, Randy Staats and others with aches and pains, the remaining Chiefs pulled together to tough-out two very important wins in successive nights.

After winning 10-8 in Brooklin, the Chiefs went on to eliminate the Redmen Saturday night by the score of 9-6 and take another big step towards the Mann Cup representing the OLA. Together the Chiefs were missing 205 regular season points from their top four offensive assets, but Friday night in Brooklin, tied at two games each of the best of seven series, the Chiefs limped to a 10-8 character win calling upon their bench to fill the holes.

It was thought that the Chiefs would be tired Saturday night at the ILA after pulling off Friday’s big win, but that was not the case.

Instead, the Chiefs support staff continually stepped up to pour it on in front of a large Chiefs crowd.

He was not sure if or when his top guns will return to the lineup but there will be a few weeks before they make their bid to get back the Mann Cup they won in 2013 and 2014. Last year the Victoria Shamrocks defeated the Peterborough Lakers for the 2015 chalice.

“As long as we have a full lineup of 18 guys, whoever they are, and we get 100 per cent from them, whether it’s Cody [Jamieson] or Brier [Jonathan], or Austin [Staats], it doesn’t matter we have a chance.

We’ve got a solid defence and goaltending. We’ll be alright.”

The Chiefs will faceoff against the winner of the Peterborough versus Oakville series Friday night in Brooklin, the Chiefs had to come from behind to

take the 10-8 final score.

Brooklin was up 3-2 after the first period with Jordan Durston and Ryan Benesche doing the honours for Six Nations, sandwiched between three Redmen goals. Brooklin extended that lead to 5-2 in the second before Craig Point injected another Chiefs marker.

John Lafontaine scored unassisted for Brooklin at 10:53, but late in the period, Austin Staats and Benesche popped in two within

a 22 second span to end the second period with the Redmen leading the Chiefs 6-5.

Before going down with a leg injury, Durston tied the score at 6-6 at 3:16 of the third, but it didn’t stand long as Austin Shanks took the lead back for Brooklin at 6:45.

That’s when the Chiefs opened it up. Durston scored his second of the period followed by Dan Dawson, Craig Point and Brody Merrill put the Chiefs in the

drivers seat at 10-7. Kyle Rubisch netted a late goal for Brooklin for the 10-8 final score.

The game went a full 60 minutes without a penalty called on either side.

Durston went down with what appeared to be a serious leg injury late in the game, and did not return. He remained out of the lineup Saturday night.

It was an evenly played first period at the ILA with the Chiefs and the Redmen matching goals to end the first period tied at 3-3.

Vaughn Harris, with two, Dhane Smith and Dan Dawson scored the Six Nations goals in the second to capture a 7-3 lead which was trimmed by two late period Brooklin goals to go into the last period with the Chiefs holding a narrow 7-5 lead.

Dhane Smith converted a Dillon Ward lead pass to extend the Chiefs lead to 8-5 Curtis Knight put another one up for Brooklin before Dan Coates put it away at 19:47 in an empty net. Seconds before, Benesch was unsuccessful on a penalty shot.

For Tavares, coming back to Six Nations is almost like coming home after spending a few seasons as a player with the Mann Cup Chiefs of the 1990’s.

“This is one of my favourite places to play,” he said.

“I loved playing here and it’s a nice opportunity to be back and coach, especially with a good team here. It’s an honour to have played here for the Chiefs.”

This is the end of the line for the 2016 Arrows

ORANGEVILLE – It is clear that this is not going to be another banner year for Six Nations lacrosse around the Ontario Lacrosse Association and for the two-time Minto Cup Champion Arrows who lost in four straight games to the Orangeville Northmen last Tuesday night.

After dropping the first three games 12-11, 12-9 and 5-4, the Arrows were in a must-win situation at the Tony Rose Arena in Orangeville in front of 800 Northmen fans.

Knowing the gravity of the game, both teams behaved themselves as referees only called one penalty all game, that, in the third period against Orangeville.

The teams traded two

first period goals each, Oran Horn and Chris Cloutier for the Arrows.

Brendan Bomberry gave Six Nations the lead at 33 seconds of the second from Horn and Tyson Bomberry, but in the middle part of the frame, the Northmen took charge scoring the next four goals.

Tehoka Nanticoke closed the period with the Arrows behind 6-4 with 20 minutes to make that up.

Travis Brown scored for the Northmen early in the third which Brendan Bomberry responded to with back to back Six Nations goals, his second and third of the game.

With the score 7-6 and the Arrows pressing, Dallas Bridle made it 8-6 with three minutes remaining. Chris Cloutier

scored on a powerplay but with the net empty, Orangeville drove the last nail in the Arrows season at 19:54.

Keeping the high scoring Arrows off the score sheet is not easy but the Northmen found that key to their success and the Orangeville squad is to be commended for being able to do that. Doug Jamieson faced 54 shots while Nolan Clayton had to handle 52 Six Nations shots.

Team general manager Scott Smith promises a few changes next year after this playoffs’ sudden collapse, but is still at a loss to what exactly went wrong against Orangeville.

“I really don’t know what happened,” he admits.

An Arrows loss is a Chiefs win as Austin Staats has been called up to the Major Series Chiefs from the Jr. A Arrows who were eliminated last weekend. The Chiefs are suffering a series of high profile players with injuries and found themselves in need of bodies.
