Speak Cayuga: The making of SNP’s language saving app

By Jayson Koblun SIX NATIONS – Technology changes fast. Fifteen years ago there was no Facebook, no such thing as a Smartphone, no YouTube and there were definitely no mobile phone apps that could help reteach the world a dying language. Today there is.

A team from Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) understands how the world is changing when it comes to technology and has developed an app that can help users learn to speak Cayuga.

“The idea was to start with the basics, the things that people could start using immediately,” said Sara General, project co-ordinator. “There are also some longer dialogues for people to copy, for those who want to start being able to have short exchanges in Cayuga.”

General was responsi-

ble for the overall co-ordination of the project, but had a lot of help from many other people, including Kehte and Tracy Deer, who helped compile the language components of the app.

There are 500 words and phrases on the Cayuga app and those were recorded by Joanne Longboat, Kehte Deer, Tracy Deer, Tom Deer and Alfred Keye. The team also had help with the photographs by lots of community members who were kind enough to come and pose for pictures. The app was coded and put together by Thornton Media, Inc., the only hi-tech language tool company in the world devoted to indigenous languages.

The app helps users with pronunciation too.

“There is a section on the app that covers the basic sounds the various letters (particularly

She first heard about the idea from Tom Deer nearly three years ago. He had attended an education conference in the United States and saw the work that Thornton Media was doing and thought it would be a great project to do for the Cayuga language.

Although it was a good idea, they didn’t have the resources to make it at the time. Fortunately, this year they were able to move forward, “It was a lot of work that had to be completed very quickly — we contracted Thornton Media in January of 2016, developed the word list and scheduled the recording and photography for the first week of March. The iOS version of the app was completed and made available for download March 29, 2016 — just in time for our language conference,” said General.

The app was made to

share the language with people in the community and get them excited about learning Cayuga, one of the ancestral languages here at Six Nations. It also gives a chance to create a tool that people can take with them anywhere, to learn on their own and share with their kids.

“We also thought it would be a great tool for learners who are just starting out, as well as a support to students in the new degree program,” said General.

Since the app’s release, General said “we’ve had a lot of positive feedback, which is great! We saw a lot of encouraging comments through social media and we’ve heard through our friends and families that people are downloading and using it. We’ve also heard that some of our older speakers enjoy the app as well, which for us, is so awe-

some. What people seem to like is the combination of sound, visual and writing — and the games! It’s also nice to see familiar faces in some of the pictures as well.”

The team is extremely proud of the final product and is grateful for everyone who helped the app become a reality.

“We’re extremely proud of the development team. It took a lot of preparation beforehand, a lot of work the week of and then Thornton Media pulled it all together. The hardest part of the whole process was deciding what language to include in the app but in the end we think we did a good job,” said General.

The app is only available on the Apple App store right now and the Android version is currently in the works and should be available in a few months.

HDI lawyer removed from Six Nations

OHSWEKEN – A dramatic scene unfolded at the Grand River Employment and Training building Tuesday morning when members of the Men’s Fire physically removed Haudenosaunee Development Institute lawyer Aaron Detlor from his office.

Detlor and the HDI have been under constant criticism in the past for its lack of transparency and what has been perceived as selling out Six Nations rights for money. For its part the HDI insists this is not true and that they have been open to the public.

The Men’s Fire, an organization of Six Nations men say it’s their responsibility through the Great Law to look after the people if they feel the government, be it elected or traditional, is not doing what is in the best interest of the community at large.

The men met Detlor in the second floor hall outside his office of the GREAT building and demanded he remove himself from the community. When Detlor refused, after several requests to leave, the men took it upon themselves to remove him physically.

Detlor was obviously surprised and tried to resist but was overwhelmed by about a dozen men intent on removing him any way necessary. He was frazzled but not visibly injured in the brief interaction.

The men accused Detlor of a number of questionable decisions made by the HDI that they believe reflects negatively on Six Nations rights and claims and say they have attempted to have their questions addressed several times but what they got was not to their satisfaction. Most

Months ago, a lawyer’s report on the work of Detlor for the people of the Whitefish Nation was circulated showing several questionable billing practices and a general dissatisfaction with his work by the sitting Chief who ordered an investigation of Detlor’s billing during the time he worked for that Nation. This report has been an albatross around the neck of Detlor, which he can’t seem to distance himself from.

In the hallway of GREAT, Detlor tried to explain his actions and that of the HDI, but the Men did not accept what he had to say, having heard it all before.

liaison while at the same time publishes the Turtle Island News, arrived at the scene accusing Two Row Times of orchestrating the event. It is an accusation TRT publisher Jonathan Garlow vehemently denies.

“We got a tip. That’s all,” says Garlow. “We were just covering it on behalf of the community who needs to know.”

Once outside the GREAT building, Detlor was ordered into his car and to leave, only to return to clear out his office under supervision.

Detlor sat in his car for a time making frantic phone calls. When Six Nations Police arrived, they took Detlor into the building to question him further regarding the incident. Soon, HDI Director Hazel Hill arrived in defence of Detlor.

As news quickly spread throughout the community via Facebook and

emails, some came to the defence of Detlor while others felt it was about time something like this happened.

“I know there have been many women for many years (myself included) who tried to bring forward concerns about all of this only to be met with silencing. I appreciate that finally there was action to do this, I only hope that in the future women are listened to before it takes this long for anything to happen,” posted Lindsay Ganohsanohwe Bomberry.

In May, Cayuga Wolf Chief Sam General caused a stir with calls for the dismantling of the HDI for not negotiating in good faith on behalf of the Confederacy, the immediate dismissal and removal of Detlor, Hill and Brian Doolittle for misrepresenting the Confederacy.

egation from the Oneida Nation, near London, attended a HDI public meeting and questioned Detlor why he was getting himself involved in that com-

munity’s affairs without the knowledge or consent of the people.

Nothing was done at that time.

This morning the Men’s Fire took it upon themselves to remove Detlor themselves, saying he has been “misrepresenting the people of Six Nations.”

Bill Monture, speaking for the Men’s Fire explained the action as being made necessary after what he says has been several attempts to request information from the HDI regarding deals and agreements made by Detlor and the HDI on behalf of the people. In his own defence, Detlor maintains everything the HDI does has to be approved by the HCCC. “We are ordering you out of the community,” Monture told Detlor outside the GREAT building.

“If you come back, we will be back again.”

Detlor insists he is on reserve on the invitation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council.

The Great Canadian Warriors Editorial by Jonathan Garlow Where the Spirit Lives was released unceremoniously to an unsuspecting Canadian public in 1989 on CBC Television. Written by Keith Ross Leckie and directed by Bruce Pittman, it featured then unknown Indigenous actor Michelle St. John as Amelia, a young Kainai girl abducted by the Canadian state and forced into a child prison known as a residential school.

Although Amelia rejects colonization and successfully runs away from the prison, Where the Spirit Lives was released in a time when the subject of residential schools was largely ignored or minimized. For this reason the director had to play it safe by crafting the story of a kinder and gentler oppressor that would be more palatable to the Canadian public.

In 2012, four years after Canada’s public apology for the primary role they played in cultural genocide, the National Film Board of Canada released the documentary We Were Children, which took a much more realistic approach to the horrors of residential schools.

It was time that our own people took on the responsibility of exposing Canada by setting the record straight.

We Were Children portrays the firsthand accounts of residential school survivors Lyna Hart, and Glen Anaquod.

This documentary was the vision of Indigenous producer Lisa Meeches whose parents and older siblings were forced into residential school and who was negatively affected by the systematic racism of these violent institutions.

For 130 years Indigenous children were forced into these Government-funded schools to be beaten down, raped and humiliated. The message Canada gave us was very clear: “Our ways are better than your ways.”

Hart said that it was the first time she had shared her story and that her involvement was a key step in her personal healing process. The story these survivors share is raw and unapologetic.

It cannot be properly put into words, especially English words, the depth of shame, hatred and agony that Indigenous people experience when reliving these stories. It happened to all of us.

Either first hand or second hand we all are affected by the approach Canada

took when they decided to ‘kill the Indian within the child to save the man’.

Six Nations residential school survivor Geronimo Henry recalls his traumatic experiences by saying “It was like a prison, but we had done nothing wrong. We were just kids.” Our people committed the crime of being born Indian here in our own land.

It’s not our fault. We didn’t deserve those abuses and treatment. We are not a worthless people. Quite the opposite in fact, our people had been living here for thousands of years in precious peace. Our languages and culture prove that fact.

Look at these words: O Gwadeni:deo means taking care of our own. Adenidao:hsra means compassion and kindness. Dedwadadriwanohwa:k means respecting one another. Degayenawa’ko:ngye’ means working together.

Gaihwaedahgoh means taking responsibility. Oihwadogehsra means being truthful and consistent.

Sge:no, the word we use every day to say hello means peaceful thoughts and actions.

Think of all the wampum belts that represent peace and friendship. We can be proud of our Indigenous legacy.

Hatred, anger, jealousy and greed doesn’t have a place in our society and never did.

Historians and scholars call us the Great Warriors, but we did not invent machine guns, tanks and nuclear bombs. It’s not that we couldn’t invent them — we didn’t want to. If anything, Europeans are the Great Warriors, their culture is built upon death and destruction, not ours.

History will show that Canada is able to win wars fought against little children.

All the assumptions and accusations that we were barbaric savages in need of civilizing does not stand in the face of the evidence. There was a greedy group of European savages such as Duncan Campbell Scott and John A. McDonald that wanted our land — end of story.

So today in 2016 there is absolutely no reason why anyone should be apathetic or ignorant of the enormous residential school issue. It is your responsibility as a citizen of Canada and as a human to watch these films and become informed and aware.

Dear Editor, As a lifelong community member of Six Nations and as a local business owner I was disappointed and dismayed by the content, tone and implications of an article that was published in the Turtle Island News last week entitled “Precedent feared in cigarette tycoon Ken Hill child support battle.” This article states that a “dangerous precedent” would be set if I, Mr. Ken Hill am able to use the Haudenosaunee mediation process instead of using the Ontario Court process. This article implies that if my constitutional question is successful, and confirms aboriginal autonomy over family law issues, this would have a negative impact on the Province’s jurisdiction including CAS and social services.

With respect, I take significant issue with this.

Firstly, it has always been my position, and it is our national position, that

the Province does not have jurisdiction on Six Nations and this includes jurisdiction over family law issues. It is my position that the Provincial Government’s control of CAS and social services on Six Nations has not improved the community and, at times, has had a detrimental effect. Frankly, I was surprised by the Turtle Island News’ assertion in this article that provincial jurisdiction would be preferable to aboriginal jurisdiction. This seems to run counter to the opinion often expressed by our leaders and media outlets regarding indigenous jurisdiction and, in particular, the negative impact caused by Provincial jurisdiction.

Last week’s article also seems to imply that I am seeking a determination regarding aboriginal jurisdiction of family law issues, including support payments, as a way to avoid making said sup-

port payments. (In fact, that article goes further to suggest that if the Six Nations could self-govern family law issues, rather than the Province, Six Nations’ women would be “unable to obtain child support payments”.)

Again, I take significant issue with us.

With respect to my family obligations, I have and continue to make support payments. As indicated above, I feel strongly that the Six Nations peoples should have jurisdiction and not the province. My motivation is solely to promote aboriginal autonomy.

In the future, I expect that all of our media outlets provide a balanced approach to reporting and ensure that the facts are as accurate as possible.

Earth day gala: We Love Our Mother

By Tiffany Thomas ANCASTER – The very first "We Love Our Mother" Earth Day Gala took place last Friday evening at the Marquis Gardens in Ancaster, Ontario.

The long awaited event was held by the Everlasting Tree School as a way to fundraise for the very unique education system this school offers — the Waldorf Curriculum.

The Waldorf approach to educating at the Everlasting Tree School follows the concept of bringing spirituality and cultural connectedness to the earth back into the classroom and back into our entire being.

Although every Waldorf School will have its own concept, the Everlasting Tree School passionately dedicates their time to connect the child to themselves, their culture as well as our Earth.

The evening started off with some good old fashioned humour from teacher Sean Thompson, who did an exceptional job of loosening up the crowd.

He spoke about the importance of language and how crucial it is to have a cultural inspiration within our lives as Ohgwehowe people.

"I'm thankful for all of the people who have inspired me to get out there and take my language and culture back,” said Thompson, who made it clear he did not prepare a speech and went with whatever his heart told him to say.

As the evening went on, attendees were placing silent bids on everything from beautiful handmade traditional outfits to local artists artwork. There were entertainers including Theresa Bear Fox of Kontiwennahawi, Lacey Hill, Cheri and Sheila Maracle, as well as Karonhyawa:ke. Guests were treated to delicious bruschetta bread, pasta prima vera, herb and garlic chicken, medallions of beef au jus and roasted rosemary potatoes.

Amy Bomberry, a co-founder of the school, presented the formation of the school itself during the dinner and gave sincere gratitude to Six Nations

Council as well as Scott Smith (Smith Industries) who contributed towards the roots of The Everlasting Tree School. Bomberry applauded and gave thanks to all of the founders, teachers, sponsors, parents and community members for all of the support and help that was needed to create this school into everything it is today.

Chandra Maracle, another co-founder of the school, gave an empowering speech about Haudenosaunee thought and philosophy, as well as the entire concept of the Waldorf Curriculum being used at the Everlasting Tree School.

Food Bank holding fundraiser golf tournament

By Jayson Koblun OHSWEKEN – The Six Nations Community Food Bank will be putting on its golf tournament this year on June 4 at MontHill Golf and Country Club in hopes of raising funds to continue improving its current services.

“We’ve seen an increase in the number of community members using the food bank in the past several months and we need to be able to keep helping them,” said Charley Hill, food bank co-ordinator.

This tournament will be the food bank’s third annual fundraising golf tournament and Hill is

hoping to see 144 golfers out on the green.

On the big day, the food bank would like to be able to offer prizes for each golfer showing their support for the food bank so the food bank is also asking for any kind of prize donations.

Teams of four are asked to register by the early registration deadline of May 20. It costs $450 for a team to register or $125 for individuals and all the funds raised will go towards helping the food bank.

The food bank is offering several different sponsorship opportunities that would give the donor certain forms or rec-

ognition and thanks at the event. The cost of the event includes 18 holes of golf, contest holes, lunch, steak dinner and a prize table.

“Aside from the regular prizes, golfers also have the chance to win a truck in our hole-in-one contest,” said Hill. “You get a hole-in-one and you get a truck.”

The belt is fashioned with two rows of purple wampum (traditional shell beads) alternating with three rows of white.

The white wampum represent peace, friendship and respect while the purple ones depict the paths of two vessels traveling together on the river of life.

One vessel, a birch bark canoe, is for the Indigenous people and their customs and laws and the other, a sailing ship, is for the European settlers and their customs and laws. The pact promised that each would travel the river together but in separate boats, parallel but never touching, pledging that “neither of us will try to steer the other’s vessel.”

That the ends remain unfinished is representative of the fact that the stories of both peoples have both a long history and a future that is still being written. Their stories intertwine like the tassels of the belt and like the waters of the river. They will continue on down this river together

in peace and friendship as long as the grass is green, the water flows, and the sun rises in the east.

Later in the meeting, Council will vote on a number of actions to be taken with respect to the municipal implications of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. As first steps, the City has committed to providing intercultural competency training for all employees. Civic Administration, in partnership with the London Public Library, will also be working to identify and collect copies of records related to the residential school system to be provided to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. As well, the City’s Culture Office will work with London Arts Council and local First Nations communities to develop a prominent memorial in London acknowledging the history of Canada’s residential school system and its former students.

The Mayor, as Head of Council, is also seeking direction from Council tonight to further our work in strengthening relationships with local First Nations.

Aaron Detlor and the Haudenosaunee Development Institute

By Nahnda Garlow OHSWEKEN – Robert Aaron Detlor is a Canadian lawyer from Toronto, Ontario who has been representing the Haudenosaunee citizens of Six Nations of the Grand River via the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council (HCCC) and the Haudenosaunee Development Institute (HDI) since 2007.

Detlor was evicted from Six Nations in a community led action Tuesday morning.

This follows almost an entire year of accusations and evidence raised by Haudenosaunee citizens at Six Na-tions, saying Detlor has been misrepresenting their interests.

A Background in Energy Law Detlor was called to the bar in 1998. He worked with several law firms in the city of Toronto in-cluding Power Budd LLP — a boutique energy law firm that, according to a Lexpert Magazine article in 2000 boasted its staff of 15 “cherry-picked” specialists in energy law, environmental law, regulated industries and government relations.

Power Budd eventually merged with CMS Cameron McKenna, an international law firm with 15 years of experience in energy law and politics; including consulting with the conservative gov-ernment to take Ontario’s energy from public to corporate in the Business Corporations Act and consulting for the 1998 Energy Competition Act. Detlor was one of those specialists on the team filled with vision for all the legal work ahead of them, negotiating for the new energy industry of corporations and municipal ownership — paving the way for the Ontario Power Generation to create an energy marketplace in Ontario.

Detlor’s beginnings at Six Nations The lawyer, who says he is Mohawk, has been in the public eye at Six Nations since 2006 when he arrived in the community during the Caledonia reclamation.

Sources told the Two Row Times Detlor originally arrived on the territory at the negotiating table for the Caledonia reclamation as a driver for another lawyer.

During the process Detlor was routinely asked for his opinion as a bystander to the negotiations and eventually was brought to the table as a participant.

According to documents obtained by the TRT, Detlor publicly confirmed at a meeting in 2009 that he was secured on contract and retainer by the HCCC to act as their lawyer.

Multi-million dollar energy deals HDI held a public meeting last summer and distributed a report that said in 2007 Detlor was appointed along with Ron Thomas and Brian Doolittle to “lay out all the steps necessary to ensure the successful implementation of the institute”.

‘The institute’ would later become HDI, and Detlor a key negotiator in writing letters and sharing emails with development corporations — agreeing to their projects on NanFan Treaty lands, also known as the Beaver Hunting Grounds or the Dish with One Spoon territory, in exchange for fi-nancial compensation to the Haudenosaunee people.

HDI eventually started reaching out to development corporations and became the administrative vehicle for development corporations to receive the required prior and informed consent of the Haudenosaunee.

Call to dismantle HDI Last summer a condoled chief of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy followed traditional protocols and stood, supported by his clan mother and two clan families, calling for the immediate disman-tlement of the Haudenosaunee Development Institute and dismissal of lawyer Aaron Detlor and HDI Board members Hazel Hill and Brian Doolittle.

This came after Haudenosaunee citizens of Six Nations were informed that Detlor, along with other members of the HDI signed an engagement agreement with Samsung waiving the applica-tion of sovereign immunity for the Haudenosaunee people throughout the NanFan Treaty of 1701 — areas the HDI says they represent.

The agreements further stipulated that in exchange for agreeing to the projects, HCCC would ensure

any of its member chiefs or citizens would not oppose the project for it’s duration — and that HDI would give money to Haudenosaunee people for their loyalty.

Despite having followed proper protocol in his statement, the concerns raised by that Chief and the two clans were ignored by the HDI. Further to that, Haudenosaunee citizens who raised concerns and asked questions about the deals were misrepresented by HCCC media representatives, who played down the story to be nothing more than a misunderstanding and personal attack. Detlor spoke to Hamilton media about the incident calling it a “kerfuffle”. HCCC Secretary Jock Hill released a statement via Fa-cebook saying that the incident was not recorded in the minutes.

But it did happen. A declaration was read aloud in council by Cayuga Wolf Chief Sam General, calling for the dismantlement of the HDI for not negotiating in good faith on behalf of the Con-federacy.

It also clearly called for the immediate dismissal and removal of Detlor, Hill and Doolittle for misrepresenting the Confederacy, immediate halting of all HDI business and the launch of a full in-vestigation into HDI by the Confederacy.

Fully aware that the Cayuga Wolf and Cayuga Snipe clans were calling for HDI

to stop repre-senting their interests — the HDI, Detlor, Hill and Doolittle continued to operate without a consen-sus in the Confederacy.

Detlor defended himself and the actions of HDI regarding the Samsung Agreements at last May’s Confederacy Council, claiming the sovereign immunity they waived was only applicable in the United States.

“It’s a specific legal concept from the United States,” Detlor told the Confederacy.

Detlor told the Council the lawyers who drafted the Samsung agreements were American and that despite initial concerns raised by the chiefs who HDI consulted with that it was decided the Agreements would be accepted with that clause remaining.

However, members nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy dwell on both sides of the Canada-US border. The NanFan Treaty area HDI was laying claim to also extends into the US. 2438543 Ontario Inc. Additional red flags were raised by Haudenosaunee citizens at Six Nations after it was discov-ered the HCCC and HDI had created a corporation in the fall of 2014 that was used to purchase land in Brant County, just outside of the reserve borders.

Copies of the land transfer given to TRT did not name HDI, but an online search through the Minis-

try of Government Services listed ‘2438543 Ontario Inc.’ as a “Corporation under the juris-diction of Ontario”. HDI Director Hazel Hill is noted as the Director of the Corporation, which was launched in October of 2014, and identifies Hill as a Canadian resident.

Additional research confirmed that on May 27, 2015 a change was submitted to the corporate structure: adding Aaron Detlor as Secretary and Brian Doolittle as President. Both men are also at the core of HDI and are listed on the document as Canadian residents.

Members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and it’s citizens were unaware they were share-holders to a corporation, were not informed of its inception and were not privy to finances in-volved with the land purchase.

Overcharging clients Other reports of questionable actions Detlor and members of the HDI have taken since last summer prompted an urgency to take action to remove Detlor from the community.

Reports were sent to Haudenosaunee citizens at Six Nations from concerned members at the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation (AAFN), formerly known as Whitefish Lake First Na-tion. Detlor represented that community and was investigated for overcharging the community.

The band council launched a third party investigation which confirmed Detlor was simultaneously charging four Ontario First Nations for hours he worked. One of those communities was Six Na-tions.

New reports Recent court transcripts brought to the Two Row Times also show Detlor becoming involved in personal legal matters of the citizens at Six Nations, including assisting Haudenosaunee citizens to fight one another in provincial courtrooms.

According to the Great Law of Peace, weapons of war against one another are to be buried. Maintaining the peace at all costs is central to the Confederacy itself and Haudenosaunee chil-dren are taught this is something the Haudenosaunee people should not participate in.

However transcripts show Detlor representing one Haudenosaunee person against another in the courtroom, bringing the Ganohonyo’k into those proceedings, and using it in the courtroom to help two community members fight in a court of law under a foreign jurisdiction.

This is part of the big picture that prompted a community led action Tuesday to remove the lawyer from his office in Ohsweken.

What happens next has yet to be seen.

Improving mental health crisis response

By Jayson Koblun BRANTFORD – Brantford police have partnered with several social work and mental health agencies to develop a new collaborative community mental health response strategy called the Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team (MCRRT).

At a press conference on Wednesday April 20 the initiative was unveiled and media was given the opportunity to ask questions.

"As an agency we want to be able to provide the right service at the right place at the right time to the individual," said Chuck Dowdall, executive director of St. Leonard’s Community Services (SLCS). ”This initiative speaks volumes to how this community has come together to make sure a person receives the right service at the right time and at the right place. It also ensures there will be no gaps in service going for-

ward for these individuals needing assistance."

MCRRT is made up of a team of a uniformed officer and a SLCS Mental Health Specialist who attend as first responders to emergency calls for service involving persons in mental crisis.

Previous approaches dealing with people who were experiencing

mental health crisis’ involved hospitalization and an arrest until the individuals symptoms eased or passed. The individual would soon or eventually be released just to potentially repeat the process, not actually helping the individual get better.

This new collaborative strategy was ini-

tiated by members of Brantford Police, SLCS, Nipissing University, HealthIM, Brant Community Healthcare System and Wilfrid Laurier University and is based on local research conducted by Wilfrid Laurier University and HealthIM that will help police and health practitioners ensure patients get the

best quality care during an incident.

"Previously, only 27 per cent of those we did not apprehend were connected to community mental health services," said Brantford police Chief Geoff Nelson. "That left 73 per cent of those we engaged on that treadmill [not receiving the help they need]. Now,

MCRRT has been in place for seven months and the developers are excited about the positive feedback they’ve been receiving.

Brantford has a large Indigenous population and some Indigenous individuals are suffering from residential school related post-traumatic stress disorder and other culture specific issues.

Dowdall said that the team has already been in contact with Six Nations Health Services Mental Health department.

“We’ve been in contact with [Six Nations] Mental Health and are going to work with them to address these specific cultural needs,” said Dowdall. “We know how important it is to treat each and every person on an individual basis.”

Video game review: Tree of Savior (PC)

Tree of Savior picks up Steam this weekend

By Jonathan Garlow The internet is constantly generating fancy new abbreviations and memes.

Most gamers are aware that MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game but old geezers from my generation aren’t always with it when it comes to the internet.

These days video games hold your hand and coddle you. Players are rewarded every 10 seconds for the smallest achievements and aren’t punished for their mistakes. In today’s RPGs everyone is super-powerful and godly within the first hour of game time and attention spans are getting shorter than a Planck constant.

Back in my day, if you didn’t save your game you lost everything when you died. If you put points into the wrong stats, too bad — you just lived with it or started over. Warriors got mowed down by spells, healers died with one or two chops by a sword and rogues picked locks and hid in the shadows. Back in my hay-day magical items were epic and legendary items didn’t yet exist.

So here in 2016, Tree of Savior by IMC games is like a breath of fresh air for video game veterans like me. Imagine if you could take Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy from Nintendo, mix them together, update the graphics and make it available to enjoy online with your friends. Well now you can – and for FREE. Starting out in the character creation screen you can choose to start as a Swordsman, Cleric, Archer, or Wizard. Typ-

There are so many classes I can’t even list them all, but here are some: Ranger, Priest, Highlander, Pyromancer, Hunter, Paladin, Barbarian, Rogue, Monk, Sorcerer, Druid, Alchemist, Canoneer, Templar, Shinobi and more.

Tree of Savior will be launched April 30 for the PC on the Steam network and will have 80 classes available to choose from as you progress through the hundreds of character levels.

It should be mentioned that the graphics and artwork for this game are very detailed and inspired. It’s like the perfect mix of League of Legends

and Final Fantasy Tactics.

It may not be a graphical achievement the way Call of Duty or Crysis 3 is, but it still pushes the limits in a different way.

Although it was released in Beta format, development is on-going and the game isn’t perfectly optimized. Even on

my beast-mode PC I still experienced frame rate problems during graphically intense moments or in the heavily populated cities.

Another interesting aspect of this game is the robust exploration and collection systems that exist. You are heavily re-

warded for full clears of the map and for killing all of the enemies in these zones. It makes you want to explore each and every area, even ones that are below your level that you may have missed.

your computer through a program called DS4 Windows. This plug and play app uses Bluetooth to seamlessly integrate the controller and Tree of Savior was designed to use this technology. It’s easy, fun and makes the game much more enjoyable.

All of these aside, there are a few drawbacks to Tree of Savior. Although this is a free-to-play release, you can upgrade to a premium experience that gives you increased benefits for $10 per month. Premium users receive 30 per cent more XP, move faster, have more trading ability and can enter more dungeons per day. It’s almost payto-win, which is a bad thing.

Personally, I didn’t appreciate the objectification and over-sexualization of female characters but the online forums are telling me to relax because it’s a culturally accepted style of artwork called anime. The game is rated Teen, but parents should be warned.

Another criticism is the drastic amount of time that it takes to reach high levels in Tree of Savior and some are calling this game a “Korean grindfest.” It takes a lot of dedication and commitment to reach the end-game plateaus. If you enjoy the combat and exploration, Tree of Savior becomes more about the journey and not the destination.

Redrum Riders plan first ride of the summer

By Jim Windle SIX NATIONS – The Six Nations Chapter of the Redrum Riders Motorcycle Club is busy preparing for its first ride of the summer, where the club hopes to raise awareness and funds to help renovate a business building located in Port Maitland.

“That piece of land is still ours, and we want to bring awareness to that,” said Six Nations Chapter president Mark Barrowcliffe.

Registration for the ride will be at 12 noon, May 14, at the ‘weeken Toys parking lot located at 2469 Fourth Line, with “kick stands up at 1 p.m.,” as they say.

With input from other chapters including the Manitoulin Chapter, Barrowcliffe is hoping for between 70 to 100 riders when they pull out.

The cost is $20 per rider and $10 for a passenger.

Based in Brooklyn New York, the Native American based Redrum Motor Cycle Club, which started in 2005, uses its profile and organization to “bring positivity and righteousness to a city, town, res-

ervation or community.

Redrum represents the lifeblood of Mother Earth and the force that binds mankind together,” according to their official Facebook page.

Writing it on a web-

page is one thing, but it’s the positive reports from a number of official Redrum Rides, that bring that statement to life.

Their motto, “Spreading Positivity on Two Wheels,” is in stark contrast to the image a long line of rumbling Harley Davidsons and leather jackets with crests emblazoned on the back, usually conjures up.

Mark Barrowcliffe is president of the Six Nations Chapter of the Redrum Riders MC, and has a busy summer lined up for the chapter with fund raising rides to help a wide range of needs in a number of communities.

The Six Nations Chapter is relatively new, officially starting, but has nine full members to date and more in the “prospect” stage.

The process of membership is a long one as prospective clubs or riders are allowed to ride without “colours” and get familiar with the program and the goals of the club. Following this

probation period, the Club decides if this person or potential chapter is worthy of wearing the Redrum Crest. Clubs listed as “prospective” chapters spread from British Columbia, Peterborough, Alberta, Phoenix AZ, South Texas, Cleveland Ohio, and several others in California, Washington State, New England and South Dakota.

Other Redrum Chapters include the Nomads, New York Chapter, with First Nation Chapters in Akwesasne, Manitoulin Island, Spirit Island, Brooklin New York; Central New Jersey; Staten Island New York, Onondaga Nation, First Nations Raleigh NC, Hudson Valley, Seneca Nation, Maherrin Nation, Kialegee, Georgia, Cherokee NC. First Nations of North East Tennessee, First Nations of Taino NY and NJ. There is even a Chapter in Tangiers, Morocco.

SIX NATIONS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SURVEY FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS New Directions Group and Six Nations Mental Health are partnering to create the Six Nations Community Engagement Survey for Mental Health and Addictions. The survey will aim to gather community feedback on the development of Mental Health and Addiction programs and how they can better serve community members. Some themes included in the survey are awareness and accessibility of programs, effectiveness of services, enhancing community partnerships, and identifying culturally appropriate services.

The survey will be conducted within the comfort of your home from May 2016 to July 2016 during the day and evenings. The survey will be performed through face-to-face interviews. Trained Surveyors will be randomly selecting homes by blue number to ask for your participation in a survey. We are targeting participants ages 16 and up. Participation is completely voluntary and the right to refuse or withdraw will be upheld. All information given in the survey will be confidential and all participants will remain anonymous.

Upon completion of the survey, the findings will be compiled into a report and sent to The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to aid on Phase 2 of the Mental Health and Addictions Strategy. The report will also be sent to Six Nations Council, Six Nations Health Services and made available for all Six Nations community members.

Canadian farm groups call to stop GMO alfalfa seed release

Canadian farm organizations representing a diversity of farmers and production systems are asking the federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay, to take immediate action to stop any further release of genetically modified (GM or genetically engineered) alfalfa seed, following an announcement by the company Forage Genetics International (FGI) that it has sold a limited quantity for spring 2016 planting in Eastern Canada.

This is the first time that any GM alfalfa has been sold in Canada.

A letter signed by 15 farm organizations calls upon the Minister to remove variety registration for all GM alfalfa until a full economic impact assessment is conducted, and to establish a protocol for testing all imports of alfalfa seed grown in the US. These measures would stop the sale of GM alfalfa seed in Canada and prevent the inadvertent

“It’s imperative that the government take urgent action to stop the commercial introduction of GM alfalfa, to prevent irreversible contamination,” said Marcel Groleau, President of the Union des Producteurs Agricoles, which is the Union of Agricultural Producers in Quebec.

hoods will be threatened by proliferation of this one GM crop,” said Peter Eggers, an alfalfa producer in Alberta and National Farmers Union Board member. “Alfalfa is an amazing crop for so many farmers. Losing alfalfa to GM contamination would be devastating for many farmers and consumers.

Alfalfa is grown on almost 30 per cent of Canada’s cropland. Alfalfa is used as high-protein feed for dairy and meat animals (hay and pasture). It’s also used in crop rotations to build up the nutrients in soil, making it important for growing grains and vegetables. Canada is the one of the world’s top five exporters of alfalfa pellets and cubes, and exports over $50 million of alfalfa seed every year. However many of Canada’s export markets have not yet approved GM alfalfa.

“The introduction of GM alfalfa could mean we lose some valuable export markets,” said Heather Kerschbaumer of Forage Seed Canada which represents all forage seed producers in Canada, “The risks and costs are just too high for our industry.”

The risk of GM alfalfa spreading to where it is not wanted is acknowledged as particularly high because alfalfa is a perennial crop that is pollinat-

ed by bees, it often grows wild in uncultivated areas, and it has tiny seeds.

“Canada’s growing and high-value organic sector could be seriously harmed

by GM alfalfa,” said Lisa Mumm, board member of the Canada Organic Trade Association and a farmer-owner of Mumm’s Sprouting Seeds which grows and sells organic spouting seeds for the consumer market, “Many

farmers rely on alfalfa to produce a range of organic foods for Canadians.”

GM alfalfa is a major concern for organic farmers because the Canadian Organic Standard prohibits the use of GM seeds.

FGI has approval to sell alfalfa with two genetically modified traits licensed from Monsanto, for glyphosate-tolerance and low-lignin.

SNEC also wants to speak with Six Nations Police before a statement is issued. Elected Chief Ava Hill was out of town and was not in attendance at last night’s elected council meeting.

Members of the Oneida Nation of the Thames oppose joint council

By Nahnda Garlow ONEIDA – A letter sent to the Two Row Times clearly articulates that members of the Oneida Nations of the Thames are not in support of a proposed joint council between the traditional Haudenosaunee government and the Oneida band council.

The letter says a political divide in the community stem from a land deal from 2002 signing over 6.4 acres from the Lottie Nicholas Estate to Howard Elijah and Bob Antone for “$1.00 dollar along with love and compassion.”

The Haudenosaunee clan families at Oneida holding the titles of Teyohakw^t, Thanahak^tha and Howatsat^tha sent the statement — saying that a divide amongst traditional people in the community started when Elijah and Antone took that land and petitioned the band council for funds to build another longhouse.

According to the letter, Haudenosaunee clan families at Oneida did not come to an agreement on approaching band council for funding because the aquisition of the land did not come through council first.

“On February 17, 2004 the Chiefs council put out an official written statement that stated their position and it was put out to the people of Onei-

da. This document was signed by condoled titleholders in three different title families. The first title family Otatsehte was signed by condoled titleholders Foster T Elijah and Sadie Summers.

The second title family, Shonuses was signed by condoled titleholder Dolly Doxtator and the third title family, Howatsa’t^’tha was signed by condoled titleholders Rosalie Doxtator and Belanger Brown. These families made it very clear that there has never been a Chief’s Council meeting to consent to a land deal between the Chief’s Counsel and Nicholas Deleary.”

The clan families write that funding in spite of not having a consensus, Elijah and Antone pushed ahead with the new longhouse project — securing money from the band council in February of 2003.

The clan families also had issue with jurisdictional matters of accepting money from the band council to construct the new longhouse. Contracts shown to the Two Row Times stated the agreements “are to be governed according to the laws of the province of Ontario and the laws of Canada.”

Sources from Oneida say this was something the clan families could not accept and that these and several more actions are at the root of the di-

vide between longhouses in Oneida.

The letter from the three clan families of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy states, “We would also like to make it very clear and strongly state that we the Ongwehonwe under the Kaianerekowa within the K^nthyokwanhasta of the Old Longhouse on Elijah Road, are NOT working with band administration on this new joint initiative or this new governance draft, as it does not fit in ours our circle and goes against the principles of the Kaianerekowa. We will NEVER take part or agree to either of these two initiatives. Furthermore, there is more than just the Bear Clan present in our house and the signatures at the end of this letter will confirm this.”

The letter was signed by three traditional clan titleholders and dated April 3, 2016. It ends, “We would also like to express that we do not want to argue or fight with our people, but we do want to make things right in accordance with our original teachings under the Kaianerekowa and within the K^nthyokwanhasta. We hope that this letter has greatly reduce the confusion and misinformation being put out there in regards to longhouses and what people are working with who in Oneida.”

SNP receives $900,000 from Ontario Trillium Foundation to build opportunities

By TRT staff SIX NATIONS – Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) has been approved for a Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) Grant in the amount of $900,000 over 48 months to give opportunities for Indigenous education and learning for First Nations youth.

By launching youth ambassador models, SNP will foster cultural resilience, cultural identity and self-confidence for First Nations youth aged 13 to 24. Funding will be used for staffing, curriculum development and delivery as well as ambassador training and mobilization.

“As a First Nations owned post-secondary institution one of our top priorities is to ensure the well-being and success of our young people,” said SNP President, Rebecca Jamieson. “This funding will allow us to create opportunities that are missing for many First Nations youth across Ontario by connecting them to a truly collaborative, respectful initiative that addresses the diversity of their cultures and languages.”

“SNP’s approach to

this project will place considerable emphasis on Indigenous identity construction by encompassing spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical well-being of the youth,” said Jamieson.

“SNP is the ideal organization to carry out this work due to our unique perspective as an Indigenous post-secondary institution which allows us to respect Indigenous cultures while recognizing and supporting personal strengths and gifts that build self-confidence in youth.”

Youth ambassadors participating in this project will also be involved in the upcoming tri-annual World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education (WIPCE), co-hosted by SNP and Tap Resources. Vital to WIPCE is a powerful and culturally diverse youth forum that encourages youth to engage, participate, and lead issues of significance, as defined by youth. WIPCE 2017 is an opportunity for participating Indigenous youth to showcase and share their unique skills, talents and personal gifts.

The overall issue

this initiative seeks to address is improved well-being for First Nations youth and, by extension, improved well-being in First Nations communities. This project provides opportunity to build cultural resilience and inspire cultural fluency in First Nations youth. There is also opportunity to redress the legacy of residential schools and directly support some of the recommendations of the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Our partners on this project include the First Nations Technical Institute (FNTI); Kenjgewin Teg Education Institute (KETI); and the Ininew Friendship Centre.

The outcomes of this project hope to increase Indigenous youth awareness and knowledge of the interconnectedness of culture, wellness and well-being; increase opportunity for local post-secondary education, trades training and skill development; and increase Indigenous youth opportunities for education, skills and attitude to enter and remain in the labour market.

In October 2015, the Canadian government struck another deal with Catholic groups which “inadvertently” released Catholic groups from their obligations under the 2007 settlement. In return for paying $1.2 million for healing programs, 50 Catholic entities wanted to be released from any and all of their obligations under the Residential School Survivors Agreement.

Other obligations include: being required to disclose documents to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, participating in compensation hearings or taking part in planned reconciliation events. In the final deal, Catholic groups agreed to continue with all of it's obligations other than it's financial obligations. The Liberal government refuse to disclose the final agreement citing confidentiality and the need for Catholic consent to release the document.

As part of the draft agreement, Canada agrees to pay the Catholics' legal costs for the hearings.

Canada also agrees not to join in any financial claims made against Catholic entities over their contributions to Indigenous healing.

Mother centred birth care is revitalizing itself in British Columbia. ekw'i7tl (pronounced ek-WAIT-ul) which means “family” in the Squamish language, is an Indigenous doula collective that supports women through the powerful experience of giving birth.

Doula's provide support and coaching to the mothers, although they do not deliver the babies, they do play roles in advocacy during labour to ensure the mother's voice is heard by doctor's, nurses or midwives.

The Canadian government has an “evacuation policy” with Indigenous mothers in Northern British Columbia that removes women from their communities to birth their babies in cities like Prince George or Vancouver. Often, these women are left alone without family support during this stressful time.

Ekw'i7tl would like to connect with these women because their collective passion is the resurgence of Indigenous birth work because they feel it is the heart of cultural resurgence.

“That's why this work to reclaim our birthing traditions and our traditional parenting methods is so important. Because they tried to take these things from us,” said Danielle Jubinville, one of the members of the Collective. The doulas share original language and teachings about birth and also provide advise on traditional medicines and ceremonies during the pregnancy. These teachings rely on relational connections and are passed down through the generations, despite familial disruptions that have historically stopped this process.

“If you think about res-

idential schools and the project of colonization, it really targeted families and the relationships between parents and their children,” Jubinville continued. Doula's in the collective are Indigenous but any mother can be a client.

The collective is dedicated to re-learning traditional practices and embodying ancestral knowledge so that the birthing process might be remembered and lived as ceremony once again.

“I find a lot of people are so afraid of their bodies and the birth process that they need to be in the hospital,” said Jessica St. Jean, another Collective member. “A life giver is bringing a whole new life into the world. Through colonization, the intergenerational effects of residential school, patterns have emerged that reinforce the fear women experience through their birth processes. “That's really a socialization issue of birth being so negatively portrayed in our society,” said St. Jean.

For approximately two hours, the Minister listened to a youth delegation from the Nishnaabe Aski Nation region speak about the depth of the turmoil they are facing. “If we can restore the self identity to our youth, it gives them something that's theirs, it gives them something good to live for,” said Robert Sutherland, 20 years old. A huge part of the problem, the youth said, is that they have lost a sense of who they are.

A healing centre exists on the territory, but it is currently being used to house people. If the youth centre is built on foundations that don't exist it may not be successful. However, Attawapiskat youth remain hopeful. “When they said they're going to approve our youth centre, our youth site, that's the main goal to bring in some programs, to bring back self identity, activities. I'm happy and a lot of youth are happy,” said Sutherland.

“I'm pleased we have something deliverable for the young people. Is this enough given the extent of the crisis that has faced Attawapiskat? No, it's not enough yet, but we have to start with this first step.”

Carolyn Bennett invited a youth delegation from Nishnaabe Aski Nation to

go to Ottawa. “It is just deciding to work together. Listening to the youth.

Listening to Chief and Council. What are their priorities and how do we make it happen across government departments and across jurisdictions,” said Bennett, echoing Angus' previous comments during an emergency suicide debate in the House of Commons last week.

Justin Trudeau talks about Canada's "colonial baggage" with NYU students

During a Q and A with New York University students last week, Justin Trudeau was quoted talking about Canada's ability to offer support for UN Peacekeeping missions. He said that Canada exists “without some of the baggage that so many other Western countries that have either

colonial pasts or perceptions of American imperialism.”

Further into the discussion, Trudeau elaborated on his thoughts around domestic colonialism.

“We have consistently margenalized, engaged in colonial behaviours, in destructive behaviours, in assimilationist behaviours that have left a legacy of challenges to a large portion of the people who live in Canada, who are Indigenous peoples.”

On Friday, during Question Period in the House of Commons, NDP MP Niki Ashton addressed Trudeau's comment.

Brandon Montour is adjusting well in San Diego

By Jim Windle SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League, have been prepping Six Nations born and raised defenseman Brandon Montour this season for his debut with the mother team, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

The offensive minded defenseman has been bulking up for the “bigs” and believes he is just about ready to make that step, but is patient enough to know that decision is not his.

In the meantime he continues to impress the Ducks brass who hold him in high esteem and don’t want to advance the 22-year-old too soon.

“You never know,” Montour told the Two Row Times in an interview from San Diego.

“Both the Gulls and the Ducks are in the playoffs now (and will likely stand pat with their lineups) but there may be an injury or something. You never know.”

Getting there was a road that took him to the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL, UMass Amherst, last season with the Norfolk Admirals of

the AHL before landing a spot with the San Diego Gulls, one step away from “the show” as hockey players refer to the NHL. Impressive reports from hockey insiders show him as an excellent skater, great vision on the ice, a solid checker and more than able to jump up into the play and use his great shot and natural playmaking skills in an offensive mode.

This past AHL regular season Montour appeared in 68 games with 12 goals and 45 assists for 57 points as a defenseman.

“Sometimes when you only look at statistics and the fact that I am an offensive minded defenseman, you might assume that my offensive numbers indicate I’m not looking after the “D”, but I don’t think that’s the case,” he says.

“Right now they want me to stay back and settle into more of a defensive mode, and that’s OK with me.”

But at the same time, he has been given the vote of confidence by the coaching staff that if he sees a chance, to take it.

But Montour is not shying away from what it takes to make an NHL career.

Although still the kind, modest and polite young man from Six Nations, he can see the improvement in his game that everyday on the ice has sharpened every aspect of my game and he believes he is ready for

the challenge when he gets the call from Anaheim.

Montour was able to return home to Six Nations for a couple of days during the season, but doesn’t expect to come home again until

after the hockey season. Those that know Montour, know his talents also include being a pro-quality lacrosse player.

Rivermen set to defend Presidents Cup

OHSWEKEN — The Six Nations Rivermen begins their defence of the 2015 Presidents Cup on Saturday, April 30, on the hard surface of the Gaylord Powless Arena, at 7 p.m. against the Ennismore James Gang.

The Rivermen finished the 2015 OLA Sr. B lacrosse regular season in first place with a record of 12 wins and 4 losses, with Roger Vyse leading the league in scoring with 31 goals and 46 assists for 77 points in the 16 game schedule. Warren Hill and Chase Martin shared the league’s top goaltending stats.

This coming season there will be one less team as the St. Catharines Saints folded up between seasons, making it a sixteam league for 2016.

Returning to challenge the Rivermen will be the Brooklin Merchants, Ennismore James Gang, Oakville Titans, Owen Sound North Stars, and

the Wallaceburg Thrashers.

The 2016 lineup is even more impressive than last year’s Champions in some areas. But what looks good on paper sometimes looks like quite another thing in the dressing room, if the chemistry is not right. There isn’t much to worry about on that account either with most of last year’s Champions expected to return plus more from overage junior players from the Minto Cup Arrows and the Founders Cup finalists, the Rebels, and NLL players returning following the pro season.

In an interview earlier this spring, coach Stew Monture was confident that his biggest problem is going to be finding enough spots on the Rivermen roster for the flood of top grade talent interested in pulling on a Rivermen jersey this coming season.

as a potential problem, but remains confident that his team is running on all cylinders with a support cast of quality Jr. C’s from the Hagersville Hawks.

The Waterloo Siskins were crushed in four straight games by the Corvairs, which set up for the Sutherland Cup final playoff series. Last Tuesday night, Caledonia secured their berth in the finals by eliminating Waterloo, 5-2. Ryan Moran, Austin Brown, Daniel Volpe, Corey Pawley, and Tait Seguin scored for the Corvairs.

But confidence will only take you so far and Bullard is not about to let his squad lose focus while they await the final series.

“When you have these delays, there is always the risk of rust,” says Bullard. “We’re having a couple of hard practices before Thursday to get us back in playing shape,” Bullard says.

The team is healthy and deep with third and fourth liners and call ups that could easily find a spot on most Jr. B lineups anywhere as first and second liners.

“When it all comes down, you still have to play the game to win it,” he warns.

“No one is going to just give it to you.”
