Enbridge to replace pipeline that crosses Six Nations territory

By Erica Jamieson SIX NATIONS – Enbridge Pipelines Inc. set up an information meeting at Six Nations Tourism on August 11th from 3 pm – 7 pm. Mark Bowler, Manager of Stakeholders and Aboriginal Affairs, said, “Elected Council wanted to have this open house.”

Bowler told those gathered that Enbridge Pipeline Inc. needs to replace the existing Line 10 pipeline.

Line 10/11 is a 146 km long pipeline built in 1962 that runs from Westover to West Seneca, NY. According to Enbridge, a 40km section of the pipeline starting north of Six Nations territory running through Brant County and ending just east of the Hamilton International Airport at the Nanticoke Junction will be replaced this year.

As part of the replacement sections of the line will be “decommissioned”; essentially this means they will be drained and capped off and will remain buried on-site underground. According to Enbridge this is the “safest and least disruptive available option. When we decommission a pipeline, we continue to look after it.

Landowners are not responsible for Enbridge’s decommissioned pipelines—we are. Forever.”

Enbridge says that leaving the decommissioned sections of pipeline on-site and underground will prevent disturbing “farmlands, neighbourhoods, roadways, wetlands, and green spaces, which we prefer to avoid whenever possible.”

The replacement process involves draining

the crude oil from the pipeline, flushing it, segmenting it and treating the pipeline so it does not corrode.

Enbridge says Line 10 currently transports 63,500 barrels a day of Canadian crude oil to a refinery owned by the United Refinery Company in Warren, Pa. Documentation distributed by Enbridge about the Line 10 replacement reads, “Our Line 10 Westover Segment Replacement Project involves replacing an approximately 35-kilometre section of 12-inch-diameter pipe with 20-inch-diameter pipe. Following project completion, Line 10’s average daily capacity will more closely approximate what the line has carried in the past. This segment replacement is not about expanding the capacity of

Line 10—it’s about routine maintenance and fitness of our lines.”

According to the Oil and Gas Journal, United Refining Co. entered into a maintenance and upgrade agreement with Enbridge for the section of Line 10. The pipeline carries crude oil from Canada to an oil refinery in Pennsylvania. United Refining funded Enbridge in 2014 with $36 million in integrity costs for the project and another $28 million for half the cost of replacing the pipeline.

Enbridge says that the project of replacing the existing pipeline is expected to carry on going well past 2018. “Pending regulatory approval, the Westover-to-Binbrook segment is scheduled for replacement in 2017.

Based on our current analysis of future shipper needs and maintenance

requirements, replacement of other segments over the subsequent several years is expected to be the optimal pipeline management approach; it is anticipated that applications for those replacements would be filed in 2018 and later.”

Many community members present at the meeting were unaware not only about the line replacement project but that an oil pipeline was present on Six Nations territory to begin with.

Toni Anthony, a Six Nations Band Member and local catering business owner present at the meeting was shocked with the information being presented. Anthony said, “I didn’t even know what questions to ask.”

Community members chatter in the parking lot was slightly more confrontational than

inside. Six Nation’s Police presence may have deterred anyone from acting out. When asked why they were there Six Nations Police Constable Tim Bomberry said, “Just want to make sure everyone’s cool, that’s all.”

Bowler says if all goes as planned the pipelines will be replaced and run better than before, however, an oil spill is always a possibility. Bowler said that the pipeline has been there running safely for up to 50 years in some cases. “We gotta make sure they continue to work and work well and that people are prepared in case something goes wrong…”

A Farewell Message to Six Nations from Mel

By Jim Windle SIX NATIONS – As many within the Six Nations community already know, local businessman, philanthropist and activist, Mel Styres passed over last weekend to be with the ancestors.

In compliance with his wishes, his ashes will be released at Kanonhstaton at noon this coming Saturday.

I visited with him at the Hamilton General Hospital and at his home before he passed, and Mel had a few words to leave behind once he had made the transition.

With his permission, he allowed the recording of some of his last thoughts regarding the future he knew he was not going to see, from his side anyhow.

Q: Have you come to grips with the reality of your passing?

A: Yes, and I am ready.

Q: What words would you have for those who remain?

A: Try and step away from the help of the government at all costs. We need to do what we can on our own and reject government money into it.

It is plain and sim-

ple. They don’t want us here. They don’t want any Onkwehonwe people in Canada, they want us to be white, and on the same page as them. That is impossible. The federal gov-

ernment is working for foreign off-shore developers and corporations but they should be working for us.

All they do is hold us back at every turn.

If we were able to make them pay us what they owe us for resources and everything they take from our land, we would not have that problem.

We’d be set. Right now we are the poorest millionaires there is. They owe us so much money they could never pay us back. So all they can do is say that the money we do get from them is for land use payments or mineral rights, or whatever. It is not a gift, as most white people think.

It’s a payment, which will never end and we will never see it fully paid.

Q: Since Kanonhstaton, there has been several rulings made that favour Onkwehonwe complaints. One recent case involves a small band out in BC, that turned down a settlement worth more than a billion dollars to allow oilsands pipelines to travel through their traditional territory.

They turned down the offer, which would have made every member of that community very rich. Are you encouraged by that?

A: That means to me that they are stand up people, turning away from all that money and saying no.

You’re not going to do this to our land and to the seven generations to come.

One thing white peo-

ple have brought us is greed. There may have been some greed before, but we had ways of dealing with those kinds of people. You can’t say we are all perfect, no we certainly are not, but greed has overcome us.

Q: With the recent land negotiations do you believe that getting something is better than gettingn nothing?

A: Sad to say, even I have a hard time with settling for something rather than nothing. I would like to believe that, in my heart, I would say no to that kind of compromise, whether or not I am going to get anything out of it personally.

Men’s Fire appeal holds up Davisville development

By Jim Windle BRANTFORD – A controversial housing development planned by Sifton Homes and Riverview Development on Toll Gate Road in Brantford, has been delayed further with an appeal put forward by the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) Men’s Fire.

But the delegation cried foul after their presentation was moved to the last item on the agenda, seriously curtailing the time they were given to make their argument. Thus, the call for the appeal so their presentation could be heard in full and considered. A counter appeal, asking that the Men’s Fire appeal be dismissed was

1830’s -1840’s Mohawk/ Mississauga village of Davisville as well as extremely sensitive and unique environmental features and endangered species of wildlife. Much of the site and surrounding area is already designate an Area of Natural Scientific Interest (aka ANSI).

The months-long OMB hearing, which ended almost a year ago, heard Six Nations interests and concerns voiced through the

subsequently lodged.

Six Nations arguments were heard by Susan Schiller, full time vice-chair of OMB, last Thursday and Friday.

“The motion was to dismiss the appeal by the Men’s Fire,” explained Schiller. “Whether the appeals will be dismissed, in which case there will not be a hearing, or that the appeals will be allowed to go forward.”

A, so-called, expert

witness brought in by TriCity Aggregates, who also have interests in the land, was heard earlier saying that the Men’s Fire appeal was without merit. But the expert admitted under questioning that he had not even read the Men’s Fire’s position paper in its entirety before forming his conclusion.

The Men’s Fire were represented by spokesperson Susan Draper, who has been doing legal research for the Fire for some time now. Draper made a well researched, logical and powerful presentation for Ms. Schiller to consider.

In her presentation she tried to clarify what she believes is a misunderstanding about what the complaints of her clients, the Mens Fire, actually were.

“Responses from lawyers Tri-City Aggregates, the City, Sifton Homes and Grandview seem to indicate that their objection is primarily due to lack of notification or of notice,” she began. “This is a fundamental misunderstanding of what the issues actually are. We have outlined in our letter of appeal, that while notification and consultation is one of the aspects, that the issues don’t have as much to do about notification as it does the protection of our property that is currently being used

by Onkwehonwe people (for medicines and ceremonial materials) even currently.

“The use of the land for those purposes is protected under constitutional rights and treaty rights, which include hunting, fishing, the pursuit of sustenance collection of medi-

cines, and the performance of traditional ceremonies,” she went on. “TCA is aware of this, as is the city.”

She told the OMB that the delegation asked the City to notify them of that meeting to allow them to come to the final decision meeting. But according to Draper, they did not.

Some of the material

not heard by the OMB, and not read by the “expert witness” speak specifically to land use issues and that the provincial policy, since 2014, “now allows for consideration of native rights under section #35 (of the Canadian Constitution). It also discusses the protection of culture and traditional ways.”

Draper explained the fundamental lack of recognition of Indigenous rights, culture and underlying title when considering the use of contested land.

Ms. Schiller could not give any time frame for her decision on whether to allow the Men’s Fire appeal or quash it.

Six Nations continues to work toward establishing our own Child Welfare Program, “Taking Care of Our Own”. The establishment of the program is currently under the direction of the Six Nations Child Welfare Designation Working Group. Once designated, the O Gwadeni:deo “Community Commission” will assume responsibility for the on-going operations of the community program.

The Commission is to consist of ten members, at least two of who will have the ability to represent Six Nations’ traditional social structure and cultural heritage and have knowledge of traditional practices. Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) will hold two (of the ten) seats.

Five of the initial members of the Commission will be appointed to serve for two years and five will be appointed to serve for four years. Thereafter, the Commission will issue a call for five members every two years, each to serve a full four year term.

To be eligible to serve on the Commission, applicants must submit a completed application and must be: • 18 years of age or older • Have not been found guilty of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been granted, nor have been found guilty of an offence against a child/youth; both as verified, annually, through Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Searches • Have an interest in and a reasonable knowledge of the delivery of child and family services (although extensive training will be provided).

The Commission will hold responsibility to: (a) Delegate powers and responsibilities as are authorized by the Commission. (b) Monitor the mission statement, guiding principles and overall direction of the organization. (c) Approve and monitor the financial management, personnel and operational policies and procedures of the organization. (d) Monitor the quality and effectiveness of services and supports provided to the people

by O Gwadeni:deo. (e) Have direct supervisor responsibilities over the Director. (f) Along with the Director, will negotiate and be responsible for the annual budget.

The Illusion of Democracy Letters to the Editor The Corporation of Canada is registered in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as CANADA CIK#: 0000230098 and you can see their filings online at www.sec.gov If we dig a little deeper we find Canada acknowledges that it may not own any land. In the Interpretation Act the definition of the Corporation is: “Canada”, for greater certainty, includes the internal waters of Canada and the territorial sea of Canada. This is especially true if we disregard the sale of Rupert’s Land and the controversial 1841 “Surrender”.

This explains why freemen on the land are trying to use Maritime Law in Canadian courts but sadly, might makes right and their tactics don’t hold up. On the other hand, when the rightful title holders of land obey the illusion of confederation and participate in this deceitful corporate government it is a damn shame.

What about the Constitution you might ask. Do you mean the British North America Act that was changed to the Constitution Act in 1982? Or do you mean the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that was handed down from the Queen? Not much for “We the people...” is it?

Even by typing Canada with a capital “C” we are giving them creditability and authority. The good immigrants, our settler friends are being tricked. They believe it is a constitutional monarchy and that their votes are helping run the “country”. But what if this isn’t a country and really a corporate colony that has run amok?

The Queen’s Privy Council for Canada decides which laws enter the House of Commons and the weight of their power runs this corporation.

Privy means secret and this secret group is appointed only by the Governor General. Doesn’t sound very democratic does it?

Anti-native laws such as Bill C-10 and C-51 were most certainly the brainchild of this “Honourable” group.

These guys are appointed for life and are most certainly not our bros. Here is their oath: “I, [name], do solemnly and sincerely swear (declare) that I shall be a true and faithful servant to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, as a member of Her Majesty’s Privy Council for

Canada. I will in all things to be treated, debated and resolved in Privy Council, faithfully, honestly and truly declare my mind and my opinion. I shall keep secret all matters committed and revealed to me in this capacity, or that shall be secretly treated of in Council. Generally, in all things I shall do as a faithful and true servant ought to do for Her Majesty.”

You might remember a few of their names: The Right Honourable John Turner, Jean Chrétien, Joe Clark, Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell, Paul Martin, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and 17 current and former members of the Security Intelligence Review Committee. Yay for those guys.

Chretien was PM when Dudley George was killed. Brian Mulroney watched Oka happen. Chretien also penned the infamous White Paper that would have destroyed the last remnants of indigenous rights in Canada. It seems like all you need to do is kill some Indians, create anti-indigenous legislation and you too can join this secret club! Imagine if Walmart decided to allow the public to vote for local leaders to help run their establishment. It may sound good for the grassroots people but at the end of the day the Walmart CEO and board of directors will protect their corporate interests.

And THAT is why indigenous people do not vote in this hostile, foreign system. Just because don’t use big lawyer words when we speak doesn’t mean we aren’t intelligent. Onondaga Chief Arnie General has always referred to this country as the Corporation of Canada in public talks. The Haudenosaunee have always been intellectual people.

When your entire nation and existence is on the line you are forced to become vigilant. Many of our people are still investigating the true operations of our visitors and some of us have Canada all figured out.

Despite all of these points, some of us have bought into the illusion of democracy and still vote.

HDI a no show On Thursday August 19th a group of community members held an emergency meeting, which was well attended. It was originally intended to be held with the staff of Haudenosaunee Development Institute as many questions have arisen from May of this year to the present.

When we sent an invite to HDI - they did not return phone calls or emails but instead sent word through their media relations director saying, “Unfortunately due to the short notice neither individual, HDI director (Hazel Hill) and HCCC’s legal advisor Aaron Detlor) will be able to attend and as you know their attendance would be entirely dependent on the direction of the HCCC.” When questioned about why some Chiefs were unaware of the signed Samsung deal until well after it was signed, HDI has previously said during a confederacy council meetings that “time was a factor”. HDI said that these energy agreements had a timeline so they were signed and then brought to HCCC, not for approval, but in a report of what had been done thus far.

So HDI can sign multimillion dollar contracts, be in talks with an energy company for four years before bringing it to council, and sign away our sovereign immunity rights to lands to “prove that we have it” without HCCC approval, but they can’t meet with the people?

I was also advised by their media relations person (Lynda Powless) that the HCCC newsletter could an-

swer most of our questions, yet the newsletter contradicts HDI’s verbal report at August’s Chiefs Council meeting.

After sharing information and gathering even more questions from community members we have decided to call HDI to meet again. The date is tentatively set for Sunday August 23, 2015 at 5:30pm in the Social Services Gym (venue may be subject to change).

We are once again asking HDI to follow our Confederacy’s proper protocol - meet with the people of the Confederacy. As our process works the people who make up the Confederacy meet, take our concerns to our clan mothers who then relate it to our Chiefs who are the collective voices of our families. We cannot properly carry out this process if the people signing contracts on our behalf cannot find importance in following our proper protocols.

Miller on Tobacco Law I have many concerns with the current draft as reported in the local newspaper that will be presented to the HCCC for approval at their Sept. meeting but there isn’t enough space to highlight them all. The most disturbing Rules of Conduct is that the HCCC dictates who a Six Nations citizen can do business with. The Rules say those applying for a license will have to produce the proper documentation plus a verifying statement that the business is 100% Haudenosaunee owned plus proof that a non-Haudenosaunee

person has no interest or claim to the business.

The story goes on to say the Rules of Conduct say that anyone who falsely reports 100% Haudenosaunee ownership could lose their license, pay a fine or have the business assets confiscated or suffer other appropriate enforcement activity. Bill C-10 as well imposes stiff monetary fines as well as stiff prison terms.

Furthermore the story says the Rules of Conduct labels Six Nations tobacco and cigarettes “counterfeit”. It says no one shall stamp, sell or distribute “counterfeit tobacco products” on the territory. Bill C-10 labels Six Nations tobacco products “illegal contraband”. As an elected councilor I consistently pass the message to government that Six Nations’ tobacco industry is “not illegal contraband” or “counterfeit” if you will and that the Six Nations’ tobacco industry is only “illegal contraband” in the eyes of the federal and provincial governments. Well now I’d have to include the HCCC. This Rule is clearly a direct violation of a person’s human rights. The basic human right of any person gives us the freedom to make our own choices. Naturally we don’t want people with criminal backgrounds doing business at Six Nations but to target all non-native people is discriminatory. More importantly, this Rule is not in keeping with the principles of The Great Law. Yes, we hear people complain because non-native people are getting rich off our tax free rights. Letters Continued... pect non-natives are backing businesses in the tobacco trade or the spin off businesses. We suspect some Six Nations people act as cover for a non-native business. But that doesn’t give the HCCC the right to discriminate.

Both the HCCC and the Elected Council are partnering with non-native developers on our lands.

Mind you it’s not tobacco.

But where’s the fairness in applying the Rules of Conduct to one business sector and not others.

If we think about it the same Rules can be said for the non-native people being allowed to come here and use our tax free rights to buy tax free cigarettes. If the Rules of Conduct dictate that a person has to be 100 per cent Haudenosaunee to get a business license then the Rules of Conduct should dictate that people have to be 100 per cent Haudenosaune to buy tax free cigarettes here.

What concerns me is who is going to enforce the Rules of Conduct? Who is going to go in and shut down a business and confiscate all the products and equipment? Is

the HCCC still planning to appoint a Goon Squad of sorts? Certainly hope they have rethought that idea.

Don’t get me wrong, I am 100 per cent wholly supportive of tobacco regulations and a law to protect our tobacco industry even though there are many health issues associated with this industry and little sharing of the wealth.

We know many people and families in our community are dependent on the tobacco industry for their livelihood.

In previous meetings we heard the tobacco industry people are prepared to fight if the R.C.M.P. tries to enforce Bill C-10.

I believe they will be just as prepared to fight if the HCCC starts to enforce the Rules of Conduct? Will our community become another Akwasasne?

Remember when Akwasasne was like a war zone with people fighting amongst themselves and shooting at each other and burning down buildings. I don’t want that for our community and neither should the HCCC.

OP-ED Like a hero going home

No words can express what I want to say. Actually if it were up to my father, nothing needs to be said. He was just that kind of guy; a great friend to so many people, a warrior, a protector of Onkwehonwe Nations across Canada.

He was at countless stand offs and blockades; Haldimand Turbines near Hagersville and at the Caledonia Reclamation Site every single day for 6yrs. He was also involved in Aboriginal Day Steinbech, Manitoba, Clan Mothers Security against mines and resources in Grassy Narrows, also Security against mines and resources in Shoal Lake, Forestry in Northern Quebec and reviving Historical Algonquin Treaties, Mining in Shalbot Lake, Kingston, housing developments in West Brantford, housing developments on Birkett’s Lane, Brantford, and against sewage dumping from farmers fields going into water table.

In 2008 the Council Fire at Grand River came of One Mind and decided we would send out an invitational wampum inviting as many territories as we could gather. My dad was delegated as being the driver of three men to deliver the invitation which was to go to Oneida, Southwold Great Law Longhouse and Oneida Wisconsin, Great Law People and some how there it was decide to go further to Rocky Mountain House, Alberta which are descendants of Mohawk’s from Kahnawake.

I remember my father telling me how much his duties as a Onkwehonwe man meant to him.

He said that this is what gave him true purpose: his Heart was full when he was helping his people.

He gave and gave, never saving a penny for himself. That was the kind of father I had. He fought so hard to the very end. My father is so brave.

I’m so proud to be his daughter.

So come sing for my father, come pray for his

safe travels to the Sky World. He loved his people and he loved his Rez. Come show my mom how much he helped our Onkwehonwe people.

There will be no burial. He has requested his ashes to be spread at Kahnostaton (the reclamation site in Caledonia) to remind future generations to never to give up your land, treaties and rights of Onkwehonwe.

This Saturday 22nd 2015 at High Noon we will have a speaker and all the men and women and children can attend. He also will also be planted with a White Pine at his homestead so his grandchildren will always remember his teachings and medicine.

This is written on a sweater and a tshirt I bought for him, and he loved it of course.

Watermelons are a naturally long seasoned plant that thrives in very warm temperatures.

Southern Ontario is actually Canada’s best melon growing spot. I spoke with a melon grower who said he has a better crop every two years, but it’s not really a cycle so much as conditions.

The grower suggested the difficulty is you have to trick your melons into thinking they are growing in a tropical region. Growing watermelons means creating a humid spot for them to grow, so lots of mulch and plenty of water.

You might try a plant cover that lets moisture through and makes a small closed growing area for your mel-

ons. This cover also protects the plants from the dreaded striped cucumber beetle.

The striped cucumber beetle feeds on the plant and causes it to stop growing, luckily soapy water will get rid of these pesky fellows. It’s also very important the roots are not disturbed, they are quite fussy.

Careful handling of the roots at planting time and when you water or weed is crucial. The part you can’t control will be the temperature. Our weather this year from scorching hot to cool enough for shirts with sleeves may have caused your melons to struggle. I realize some of this information might be too late

Sit-n-Bull and Pro-Fit giving back in a big way

By Jim Windle SIX NATIONS – There were several million dollars worth of luxury and sports cars to ogle, blowup rides for the kids, free burgers and pizza, and an appearance and photo opportunity with Emanuel “Webster” Lewis and the one and only Trailer Park Boys, on Sunday afternoon.

The customer appreciation event attracted an estimated 6,000 visitors, several going home with a $500 prize given away every 15 minutes There was also a riding lawn mower and a golf cart given away.

All this in appreciation to customers from Jerry Montour and Kenny Hill, owners of Sit ‘n Bull and Pro-Fit Health Club.

“This is just a way for Jerry and I to give back to our loyal customers,” said Hill on behalf of his partner who had blown his voice out completely during the day. “As you know, Jerry and I and his father started this business

by The Polaris Institute an estimated 804 spills occurred on Enbridge Pipelines between 1999 and 2010. Approximately 161,475 barrels of crude oil has spilled into the environment.

Conversely, according to one of their booklets, Our Approach to Pipeline Valve Placement, “Enbridge meets or exceeds regulatory requirements by using an Intelligent Valve Placement (IVP) program…” It also says, “…our Number 1 priority - the safety of the public and the environment, and the operational reliability of our systems.”

Although Line 10/11 doesn’t run through the immediate territory of the Six Nations Reserve it does cross the territory belonging to the Six Nations of the Grand River, through Brant County and along Highway 6. In that

respect, an oil spill anywhere along Line 9, 10 or 11 will affect Six Nations as well as any wildlife or waterway in the area.

Enbridge officials distributed a pamphlet at the meeting entitled, Aboriginal and Native American Policy. It states, “Enbridge recognizes the history, uniqueness and diversity of Aboriginal and Native American Peoples.”

Despite Bowler’s main objective to maintain and build upon current relationships between Enbridge and Six Nations it was clear that Bowler didn’t know much about who governs the community. One community member at the meeting asked, “Who is Six Nations to you?” Bowler responded, “That’s what we are here to find out.

We hear from different people that Six Nations is governed by this group of people and we don’t judge that...we don’t presume to predetermine the way that Six Nations is governed.”

Liberal Announcement on First Nike offering sports grants to native youth Nations Education a Positive Start

OTTAWA – AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde said the recent announcement by Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, on First Nations education sets out a substantive plan for action.

National Chief Bellegarde stated: “New and significant investments in education are essential to closing the gap in the quality of life between First Nations and other Canadians.

This plan would have an immediate impact and help close that gap by investing in our students and our schools. This is a positive start towards supporting First Nations control of First Nations education. We look forward to more dialogue about our priorities. All the parties need to step up and make clear commitments to First Nations.”

Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau announced in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan that a

Liberal government will commit to new investments in elementary and secondary education and new school construction as well as lifting the 2% cap on essential government services for First Nations. Mr. Trudeau also announced commitments to curriculum development on Aboriginal and Treaty rights, Indian Residential Schools and the contributions of Indigenous Peoples to Canada and new investments to promote, preserve and advance First Nations languages and culture. The Liberal leader also said his party will never act unilaterally and instead will engage in a renewed, respectful, and inclusive nation-to-nation process. The new investments identified total more than $3.2 billion over 4 years. The Liberal leader also said his party will engage in First Nations-led initiatives on jurisdiction over ed-

ucation.

The National Chief noted the Liberal leader’s commitment to “re-engage in a renewed, respectful, and inclusive nation-to-nation Kelowna process to advance progress on the issues First Nations have prioritized”, including housing, infrastructure, health, child welfare and community safety and policing.

“The commitment to working with First Nations as partners on a Nation-to-Nation basis is an essential element of the new relationship that Canada and First Nations must put in place. Similar commitments from all federal parties are imperative to closing the gap,” said National Chief Bellegarde.

“That’s the approach we need to work with Canada on a comprehensive plan for closing the gap and building a stronger Canada for all of us.”

CONCERT FOR A CURE AND YOUTH EMPOWERMENT SUMMIT ENGAGES LOCAL TALENT WITH BIG NAME ENTERTAINMENT

By Lindsay Monture OHSWEKEN — Last week Six Nations attracted a mix of local and world-class talent coming together to bring entertainment, awareness and empowerment to the community.

The 8th annual Concert For A Cure event brought big names such as A Tribe Called Red (who also kicked off their 2015 Rez Tour), Digging Roots and David Wilcox to perform for free over

3 days.

“Being an artist for over 20 years, touring all these festivals around us, I was just always wondering why we didn’t have one to showcase ourselves at home,” C4AC Artistic Director and performer Jace Martin explained, “Then we said ‘well let’s do it for a cause.’ The thing that was closest to us was cancer.

Even though there is no cure for cancer, the recommend preventative measures is the only cure

so that’s why we’re doing it to raise awareness.”

Thursday opening night at the Community Hall started off with a bang as Lacey Hill, Chllly and Jessie Reyez opened for A Tribe Called Red. It was the first time Six Nations’ own Bear Witness and Tim “2oolman” Hill were able to bring their infamous electric powwow beats to their home community.

Hill expressed his appreci-

ation for being able to play at home. “This was the show I was looking forward to since the moment I joined the Tribe.

That was my favourite show of all time because I got to come and bring it home and I wanted everyone to know that they matter to me. I care about this place a lot.”

Coinciding with C4AC was Thru The Red Door’s first Youth Empowerment Summit and creative industries

workshops facilitated by the Remix Project - a collective of multi-media producers based out of Toronto. Six Nations youths participated in a video and photography workshop by videographer Brian Gregory and photographer Michelle Hazell, and an interactive session in songwriting and music engineering with Jessie Reyez.

The day ended with a special live-stream broadcast of the Youth Empowerment Summit,

hosted by Ryan McMahon featuring A Tribe Called Red. The Tribe shared many stories and experiences on their rise to fame. When asked what the message they are trying to get across with the Rez Tour, Ian “DJ NDN” Campeau replied, “It’s really important for Indigenous youth to see people in the mainstream culture like them. I’m hoping that we get to be that visual reference for kids growing up that we never had.”

“Pretty much every indigenous band that you can name on Six Nations played on our stage at one

point or another. It makes me feel so proud,” Martin said of the event, “We’ve had all the mainstream headliners and it’s a matter of bringing these guys in to get the experience with the emerging guys.

That’s the opportunity that we get to provide and it’s pretty exciting.”

“It is so important for our community to come together in unity and celebrate, support and encourage one another’s talents to build one another up and feel involved in something larger than ourselves,” concert-goer Sara Doolittle shares, “My happiness overwhelms seeing others so happy, unable to stop themselves from letting the music take over!”

Concert for a cure’s sponsors this year includes the Six Nations Community Youth Outreach, Heritage Canada, Celebrate Ontario, Two Row Times, Six Nations Council, Union Gas, and the Dreamcatcher Fund.

History of Fall Fair tells story of Six Nations

By Jim Windle The pros and cons of the Six Nations Fall Fair become evident only when viewed through the glasses of today’s struggles and sensibilities. To most, it’s just an annual event to end the summer. But there is much more to the story of how it came to be, and the political struggles it has been through, yet has never missed a beat in 148 years.

The late 1800’s was a time when some influential Six Nations families preferred to be recognized a British subjects to escape the sorrow and uncertainty of remaining sovereign, independent people.

One must always take into account the thinking of the day and not process historical data through today’s understanding.

In a small book published in 1942, recounting the history of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory’s Agricultural Society, some of the wording may be troublesome or even treasonous through todays eyes.

An example is a letter written by the Six Nations Agricultural Society to “the Right Honourable Earl of Dufferin, Governor General of the Dominion

of Canada” in 1874.

In it, J.A. Beaver, President; Wm. Martin, Vixe President; Isaac Bearfoot, Secretary: James Styres, Treasurer; and Committee members Peter Garlow, Peter Hill, William Smith, Henry Hill and Jacob Davis proudly declare themselves Her Majesty’s subjects. Note that this was before 1924.

There are conflicting dates of the actual origin of the Fair, but the first mention of it was in a Brantford Expositor article dated 1875, and refers to it as the eighth annual.

It is known that the site of the original seed that grew into the Fall Fair began at the farm of Chief Wm. Johnson at Mohawk Road and First Line Road.

In 1876, the weather was not cooperative and the Old Council House was used as a Floral Hall for the judging of flowers, as well as to display crafts and needlework. Outside there were several brass bands playing between downpours.

It was just before the 1880 Fair that Indian Affairs’ Superintendent, Mr. Gilkinson, urged the Six Nations Indians to take more interest in agricultural pursuits, so Six Nations Indians would excel their white neighbours

and that the Fairgrounds should be fenced in and an Agricultural Hall be built.

The ½ mile track was also added. The first agricultural building was in the shape of a Maltese Cross.

It is also assumed by modernists that voting was not how Six Nations did things before 1924.

This myth too is exposed in the minutes of the Six Nations Agricultural Society of 1881.

At that time, a vote was taken to determine if they should set aside $200 in prize money for the fair.

The minutes were taken by SNAS secretary Josiah Hill, who was also the secretary of the Confederacy Council.

In the summer of 1908, the original building was struck by lightning and burned to the ground along with other buildings close by. Fortunately, the building was insured and the $1400 they received from the insurance company plus a $1200 grant paid for the second building, which served the community until a new Community Hall was built in 1935 at a cost of $9,000.

Between 1914 and 1918, the building served as an army barracks for Six Nations soldiers of the 114th battalion and the fairgrounds as a parade

square.

The land the Fairgrounds now stands on was once the farm of Jackson Jamieson who purchased it from Thomas and Adam Thomas. The SNAS then granted it to the Council of Chiefs.

The Council and the SNAS were always closely associated. Around 1885, the SNAS was restructured top conform with Ontario standards so as to qualify for grants.

In the 1920’s the Chiefs Council eventually took control of the fair after controversy over how the SNAS voted on matters, by proxy, which was deemed as illegal.

A similar controversy in 1926, split both the Society and the Confederacy, some approving the change while others, including the Mohawk Workers, disapproved.

For a time there were two fairs, one organized by the Society, who considered themselves Loyalists, and the other by the faction of the Council backed by the Mohawk Workers.

Eventually, the Mohawk Workers won out and there was once again one Six Nations Fall Fair but not run by the newly imposed Elected Council.

This was overturned by Canada and the Elected

Council was given the responsibility of running the Fair with Archie Russell elected as president and William F Powless as Secretary.

The Fair has been finding a way to keep going through good times and bad, and reflect the 2nd Annual

complexities of the Six Nations politic as well as the hopes and aspirations of Six Nations people during a very hard and divided time.

Enjoy the fair, knowing a little about why it is so important to the people of Six Nations, even today.

New Credit Three Fires Traditional Pow Wow this weekend

This weekend Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation host the 29th Annual Three Fires Homecoming Pow Wow and Traditional Gathering at the New Credit Pow Wow Grounds located on 2789 Mississauga Road, Hagersville, Ontario, N0A 1H0.

The very popular Three Fires Pow Wow is a bit different than the Champion of Champions Pow Wow hosted by the nearby Six Nations of the Grand River at the end of July. Three Fires Pow Wow is not a competition of traditional dancers. Instead it is a celebration of traditional dancing and culture.

It is smaller than the Six Nations event but many dancers and visitors find it to be more relaxed and friendly.

There are many opportunities for the audience to participate in the circle with the dancers which makes it great fun for visitors and locals alike.

The annual celebra-

tion kicks off this Friday with Karaoke at the pow wow grounds starting at 7pm. Saturday a Sunrise Ceremony will light the three sacred fires that will burn throughout the weekend, representing the Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi nations of the Annishnabe Three Fires Confederacy.

The New Credit community was once located in Mississauga along the shores of the Credit River. Mississaugas traded goods at Credit River prior to the move to their new location in 1847. This First Nation was a mighty and respected trading nation with the Europeans in and around an area which included Port Credit and the City now known as Toronto.

The city of Mississauga owes its name to the Mississaugas of the New Credit. The Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation is located on some 6100 acres 25 miles south of Hamilton, Ontario. They have approximately 2050 listed Ojibwe members with

one third of them living on reserve.

All guests, participants and visitors are expected to show proper Pow Wow etiquette and subscribe to the rules and protocol that the pow wow circuit follows.

If you see a dropped eagle feather, please in-

form the MC or Arena Director, please do not touch it, as a specific song will be sung to retrieve the fallen feather. Pictures during the Flag, Prayer, Honour Songs and when an individual is honouring a drum through a whistle – should not be taken.

Pictures are allowable during “intertribal” songs (everyone is also invited to dance). Tradition is to respect the chief, veterans and elders by giving them priority in all matters concerning etiquette.

Always ask for permission before making any recordings. Children are welcome to enjoy this event, but they cannot play in the Sacred Circle. Participants are

asked to respect the arena director, head male dancer and head female dancer. Please respect the work of the Cultural Committee, volunteer’s and security personnel as their time is valuable.

Please make sure to put all recyclables and garbage in appropriate containers. Guests are asked to stand and remove your hat for certain songs. You do not have to remove your hat if you have an eagle feather in it. Do not crowd around the drummers. A Friendly Reminder – All Pow Wow Festivals are Alcohol and Drug Free.

No alcohol and drug use in the entire area of the Pow Wow and smoking is prohibited near the arena.

As hosts the St. Catharines Saints will also compete, however the Rivermen have taken the OLA Sr. B title with Saturday night’s 13-7 win over the Brooklin Merchants

at the Gaylord Powless Arena.

It was pretty well

over by the end of the second period as the Rivermen could smell the victory. Holden Vyse, Delby Powless, Mike Miller, Roger Vyse and Jacob Crans built a 10-3 lead before Martin Whittaker scored late in the period for thr Merchants.

The two teams traded three goals each in the third but the damage was already done. Roger Vyse, Rodd Squire and Travis Bland scored the final three for the Rivermen.

The Presidents Cup schedule is not set to date.

Arrows Express and Coquitlam Adanacs in deja-vous series

By Jim Windle SIX NATIONS – The Six Nations Arrows Express will get another shot at the Minto Cup and do so in front of a hometown Six Nations crowd at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena beginning Aug. 21, in a best of seven series against the Western Champions, the Coquitlam Adanacs.

Wednesday, Aug. 12th, the Six Nations Arrows Express punched

their ticket to not only play for their second Minto Cup in a row, but will also be hosting the annual Jr. A lacrosse pinnacle event.

The Arrows sunk the Jr. A Lakers four games to one in the best of seven series with an 8-3 win, Aug 12th, at the ILA. Doug Jamieson and his defense shut the Lakers out of the first and third periods while Jordan Durston and Austin

Staats went to work offensively. Durston scoring four and Staats two goals and two assists.

“A chance to battle for a Minto Cup with my 20 brothers in front of our friends, family and community. Couldn’t ask for anything more?” tweeted Brendan Bomberry.

The Arrows have been up and down since 2004 when the won the OLA Jr. A title before losing in the Minto Cup

playoffs. The next year, 2005, the Arrows won the league title again and were finalists for the Cup, but lost. The same in 2006, but in 2007, they again won the OLA title, this time winning the Minto.

In 2008, the Arrows lost in the OLA finals and

did not compete for the Cup. In 2009, they lost in the semifinals, and in 2010 lost in the OLA finals. In 2011 they lost in the semi-finals. In 2012 and 2013 they lost in the OLA finals.

But last year, in 2014, the Arrows once again won the league title and

went on the win the Minto Cup. That brings us up to date with the Arrows winning their eighth OLA Jr. A title for 2015, and hope to repeat as Minto cup champs, this time, at home.

Rebels will not make it five

By Jim Windle OHSWEKEN – Layne Smith led the Six Nations Rebels charge in the first of three back-to-back, must win games to keep the Drive-for-Five season alive after dropping games one and two in Akwesasne in the best of five Jr. B finals.

This past Wednesday, Aug. 12th, due to a scheduling issue at the ILA where the Six Nations Arrows were playing the Peterborough Lakers in the Jr. A playoffs, the Rebels returned to the Gaylord Powless Arena, their former home, to begin their three game home stand.

One could not fit another dozen people in that building without splitting the walls to do it, as Six Nations of the Grand River welcomed their Akwesasne cousins for three games in three nights.

Along with the usual “Rebels Nation” many Akwesasne fans made the trip to support their team ad do a little visiting while here. Together, the Gaylord Powless Arena was jam packed, three deep around the standing room only walkway and rinkside standing room. Even the lobby was loaded with fans trying to maneuver for an angle to watch the game from.

It was the same for Thursday night’s game, but the Rebels could not keep their drive for five season alive as the Akwesasne Indians came with no intention of going back home empty handed.

Down two games to one, the Rebels needed to win both Thursday and a potential Game #5, Friday to stay alive.

The Akwesasne Indians wanted it over before Friday to get travel arrangements ready for the Founders Cup Championships, this year held in Calgary.

Although disappointed in not making it to this year’s Founders Cup, the Rebels had some solace in that another Onkwehonwe team would represent Ontario.

“We got beat. It’s a simple as that,” said head coach Derrek General after having some time to think about what happened. “We knew Akwesasne was going to be strong because they had 10-11, 21-yearolds. They had more experience than us. We had 12 or 13 rookies and even in Game #4, we had more rookies.”

The Rebels will loose Mitch Green, Austin Staats and Phil Henry to overage as well.

Even at that, General

looks back at the number of posts his team hit in Game #4 alone, which couldn’t have made a difference.

Next season, there will be a rebuild for both the Arrows and the Rebels with more than a dozen Jr. A Arrows going overage.

They will have a lot of holes to fill and General believes he will be loosing a number of his young guns to fill those spots, which means the rebels will be drawing from the Jr. C Warriors, rippling down through the system.

Wednesday, Akwesasne took a 4-3 lead in the first after Danton Miller and Chayton King gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead. Six Nations made that back and more in the second period with Layne Smith contributing four of the Rebels six goals in the middle frame.

Also scoring for the Rebs were Kessler Doolittle and Ty Logan. Seth Oaks and Skylar Thomas score for the Indians.

The score was 9-6 as the teams took to the hard floor for the third period.

Travis Longboat added another insurance goal at 11:12 before Jack Hopps and Dalston Day scored for the visitors, but it would not be enough to change the outcome of the game, which the Rebels won 10-

Smith, a second year Rebels, had a very good rookie season last year

with 33 goals and 46 assists in 20 games dressed for. This regular season in 16 games, he scored 41

times and assisted on 19.

The Rebels will be leaning heavily on him in 2016.

Mel's message from page 4 cept the negotiators are getting anything out of this. If I could see something coming to my family or my clan I could see not having an issue with that. But individually, no one is realizing any of the benefits.

Q: Do you believe that there have been any steps forward recently?

A: There are small steps being made, each one not really very big but steps forward anyhow.

Q: I know you were very involved with Kanonhstaton. How important was that for the Haudenosaunee people?

A: Before Kanonhstaton, most white people did not know and could not understand what the problem was for us. Non-Natives have been learning through news stories and other means what the issues are.

But many times Natives are being used as pawns in their own game to push their own issues ahead.

They want us to be their shield and stand in front of the bulldozers for them. In the Dunnville area, protests against wind farms and solar farms saw nearly 100 Onkwehonwe people were

arrested and no white people, yet they were standing side by side.

They say they understand and want to help us, but really, they want us to help them to have a credible reason to fight the government using our treaties and our issues to move theirs along.

Kanonhstaton was a good thing. No mater who says what about it, it was a good thing that had to happen, and I am glad it happened while I was alive so I could participate in it. I missed out on a lot of things I wanted to help out with, like at Burnt Church, forestry and mining out in BC, I would have loved to have gone and fought for my people. Knowing I had to take care of my family here is the only thing that kept me here. Had I been a free soul, I’d have gone in a minute.

We have to maintain that strength we had at Kanonhstaton throughout all of Turtle Island, or at least hold the white government at bay. If we don’t, we’re going down faster than we know. If we do, we stay here a lot longer. I wish I was going to be around to see it. I will have to see it from the other side.

Q: What about the oth-

er side? What are your thoughts about that?

A: I don’t know what’s coming on the other side but if there is any chance I would turn my attention towards my people and help them in whatever way I could from the other side — whether it’s to change the mind of somebody of importance through a dream or whatever I can facilitate.

Maybe I won’t have an awareness of what’s happening on this side, I believe in the spirits and spirituality, but how much influence they can have, I have no idea. I will be walking that side soon.

For many years I have wondered about the other side. One Pentecostal church, when I was a young kid said once we’re gone we are gone, never to return.

I always thought that was weird. You watch ghost stories on TV and hear personal stories, wondering which is real. I have that curiosity.

I am ready to go. I have no great regrets about what I have done and who I am.

If somebody sees that different, that’s OK, at least I know what I have done.

Others may not know, but in my heart, I know who I have helped.

Q: Finally, what about the

future of the Confederacy?

A: I would call on some really rich people on this reserve to help the longhouse, our Chiefs, our Clan Mothers and help them survive in a good way with the reasonable expectations of life.

They should be looked after better by paying their bills and making sure they have food. Help them strengthen and reestablish themselves to a point where they don’t have to work except to work on the Confederacy to try and pull it back to what it once was.

That would take a lot of money because I know there are a lot of people that need to be looked after. It’s going to take a concentrated effort to get the Confederacy back on track. It’s hard to say if we can ever get it back, but it would be a worthwhile struggle to try.

The Confederacy is in such a state that it may be the only way to fix it would be to strip it down, put everyone’s beads and horns on the table and go back to the Great Law and start again.

People have to swallow their pride and do what is right for our people. Not for themselves. If we don’t, we are not going to survive.

The National Native Youth Network, a part of Gen-I, is aimed at providing a sustainable platform to engage and educational, leadership, and funding opportunities to Native American youth across the United States. This partnership, between CNAY and Nike to provide youth an

opportunity to secure funding for wellness and activity programs, is an example of how the Network is expanding opportunities for and bringing more resources to the 2.1 million Native American youth.

Native youth can now apply for up to $10,000 in funding for their programs and initiatives through the N7 Fund website n7fund. com. Canadian applications are also accepted, however restricted to non-profit organizations.

Melvin Edward Styres May 16, 1956 - August 14, 2015 age 59 After a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family, Melvin passed on Friday, August 14, 2015 at the age of 59. Dear husband of Darlene (Jonathan).

Loving father of Jillian, Jolene (Dan) & Jonathan (Shantel).

Cherished Popa of Rayonna, Tyson, Derek, Laiken, Jayden, Keilyn & Adelyn. His parents Billie & Herman Styres, brother of Carla (Wayne), Candy, Carole (Rudy), Toni (C.W.) & Mark (Judy). Brother in-law of Gordon Powless, Carolyn (Harold), Beverly (Edward), Theresa, Annie, Valerie (Walter), Patricia (Dave), Roger, Stanley (Cathy), Keith (Shelley), Pixie (Ollie), Lorelie (Gary) and Yvonne. Predeceased by his granddaughter Kionna Lily and brothers and sister in -law Marlene, Ken, and Christopher.

The Funeral Service was held on Sunday August 16, 2015 and cremation has taken place. Donations can be made to the Miles to Go Cancer Support Group in memory of Melvin.

The family of the late Patricia Whitlow give thanks and gratitude to everyone that joined us for a celebration of her life (her last party here). The cards, food, beautiful flowers, hugs and kind words were greatly appreciated.

Thank you to the caregivers and family members that cared for Pat at her home. She talked of how lucky she was to have a large, caring, loving, supportive family.

Thank you to Father Norman Casey for the thoughtful, caring words; Barry Hill for the music; St. Paul’s church for the use of their facilities (especially Vivian). A huge thank you to the family of pall-bearers that carried her to her final resting place.

THOMAS: RANDALL EARL (Randy) Passed away suddenly at his home on Friday August 14, 2015 at the age of 60 years. Loving father of Joyleen and Darryn, Amanda, Sammie and Steven, and Randeelee. Dear grandfather of Destiny, B, Evan, Keilan, Trentyn (Ten), Sophia, and Reme. Special friend of Cathie. Brother of Victor and Diane, Steve, Dean and Della, and Tracy. Special uncle of Ty, Reesha, Chrissy, Tawn, and Matt.

Son-In-law of Doris and the late Clifford Lickers. Predeceased by his step-son Stephen; grandson, Maddison; mother, Vera (Martin) Thomas. Randy dedicated over three decades in the Six Nations Community as a firefighter #215, officer with Fire Station #2, and Dispatcher. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends. Rested at his brother Victor’s home 851 Seneca Road, Six Nations after 7 p.m. Sunday where Funeral Service was held on Monday August 17, 2015 at 1 p.m. Interment Stumphall Cemetery. www.rhbanderson.com

Mark Dane Skye October 19, 1956 - August 13, 2015 age 58 On August 13, 2015 with his mother and family by his side, Mark peacefully began his journey home to the Creator. Predeceased by his father Eugene Skye, brothers, Harland and Wayne, nephew Waynie and sister-in-law Marcia. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends. Mark was well known for his artistic drawings which he loved to share with all he met.

Funeral Service was held on Sunday August 16, 2015.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Iroquois Lodge, Jay Silverheels, Dr. J. Zacks, Dr. Wright, Dr. A. Montour and Palliative staff.

We, the family of the late Doris C. Hill wish to offer our deepest gratitude to our Heavenly Father.

It was He who brought our family together. It was He whom we loved and served, it was He who made our house a home, it was He who gave us the best wife and mother.

God gives only the best!

Doris faithfully fulfilled her calling as wife and mother.

Her strong faith and godly life was a testimony that touched us all. We will always love you Doris. You will forever be in our hearts. We all miss you.

We as well wish to thank you for the many thoughts and prayers for Doris during her time in hospital.

For those who visited her it helped to ease her pain and made her feel better. For the many cards and letters that were so comforting, for the floral arrangements and for the monetary donations that was appreciated so much.

Special thanks to Bethany Baptist Church to Pastor Dan Montour, Pastor Ralph Garlow, and to Rev. Garth Roberts for their comforting messages.

Also, special thanks to Styres Funeral Home Ohsweken, Ontario, especially to Bill Lofthouse and staff who were so helpful in our time of need.

To the pallbearers Joe, Brandon, Vince, Heath, Dallas, Aronhiaies, and Trent. Thank you so much.

It is with great pleasure that I wish to thank all who attended my Surprise Ninetieth Birthday day party. It was a surprise like no other in my life.

I learned later that it was a potluck, I had never heard of that before so I want to thank all who contributed.

There certainly was plenty of food and many were asked to take food home.

I would also like to thank my daughters Dianna (San Diego) Joanne (Milwaukee). My granddaughters Karen McArthur & partner Johnny, Melissa & husband Sean, my son Jeffrey Logan, my great grandsons Cameron, Gabriel, Jonah, Cassie and Colby. Together they planned, worked and shopped to give me the best party I’ve ever had, thank you, I love you so much.

On the entertainment level I wish to thank my brother, June, for his jokes & his songs. My nephew Marty Sault, was also on hand to favor us with his songs, Johnathan Garlow entertained with his songs.

Then there was pictures of our past shown on a large screen, it went a little to fast but really lovely, whom ever contribute that thank you so much, I’m guessing it was my nephew Russ Martin.

Altogether I had a splendid time & I hope every one else did as well. It was a day to remember & cherish.
