SIX NATIONS – On February 23, 2017 The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) notified Six Nations Wildlife Program and Animal Control Services that a deceased raccoon originating from the Grand River Territory tested positive for rabies.

The specimen was collected as road kill

by Six Nations Animal Control Services along Chiefswood Road and Third Line.

It is unknown if any local animals came in contact with a rabid raccoon.

As a preventative measure Six Nations Animal Control Services are scheduling a Rabies Clinic during the month of March, once

Update on Mohawk Institute renovations

BRANTFORD – Restorations at the Mohawk Institute Residential School in Brantford are well under way thanks to all the donations made to the Woodland Cultural Centre’s Save the Evidence campaign.

“Woodland is currently in Phase 1 of the renovations, which is the repair of the roof,” said Jessica Powless, outreach co-ordinator for the centre. “Construction is currently underway.”

In 2013, major roof leaks caused significant and costly damage to the historic residential school building. The Save The Evidence campaign was launched in response and its goal was to raise the necessary

funds for repairs and renovations to ensure the physical evidence of the dark history of residential schools in Canada is never forgotten. The first phase of the project had a goal of $1,000,000.

“The Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School operated in Brantford, Ontario from 1828 to 1970,” reads the centre’s website. “It served as a boarding school for First Nations children from Six Nations, as well as other communities throughout Ontario and Quebec. It served as a key tool in the effort to assimilate First Nations children into European Christian society, and sever the continuity of culture from parent to child. After closing in 1970, it reopened in 1972

as the Woodland Cultural Centre, a non-profit organization that serves to preserve and promote First Nations culture and heritage.”

The school building has been providing indepth and historically significant insight into the Residential School System for the past 44 years. With close to 10,000 visitors every year, their tours and programs offer a distinctive look into First Nations and Canadian history.

With renovations underway on such a historical and important building there are precautions that need to be made to ensure the safety and preservation of historical documents and artifacts remain undamaged; something staff at the centre is full aware of.

“Woodland is working with heritage firms that specialize in historical preservation, so all precautions are being made,” said Powless.

During one of the centre’s tours, a tour guide will show guests how children at the school found ways to interact with one another even though it was often forbidden. The children would sign their names on some of the building’s exterior bricks and they would also climb in and around some of the buildings walls that lead to small cubbyholes after curfew to spend time together. It’s special little human-interest elements like these that the centre is going to make sure remain preserved.

Renovations are to be completed in June 2017.

In the meantime, dayto-day activities at the centre remain uninterrupted.

“It’s life as usual at Woodland,” said Powless. “All events and tours are still taking place, and we are open to the public. In fact, we are booked for tours until the end of June.”

Police seeking robbery suspect BRANTFORD — Brantford Police are seeking help from the public in identifying a man who robbed a convenience store.

The suspect entered Stand Variety on Lida Sreet at around 9:15pm Monday evening, placed an object in the door jam propping the door open

and entered the store wearing a gas mask and carrying a large metal pipe.

He demanded money from the clerk. He then fled the store and was last seen running northwest on Lida Street.

Police have released a security camera image to help identifying the sus-

pect. He is described as wearing a dark coloured black or blue winter jacket, brown jeans, black gloves and brown work boots. He was carrying a camoflauge bag with a black strap.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Brantford Police.

Eleven years since reclaiming Kanonhstaton

By Jim Windle KANONHSTATON – It was 11-years ago on a cold morning on Feb. 28, that the reclamation of Kanonhstaton, or the native take-over of the Douglas Creek Estates housing development in Caledonia, began. But that would depend on who you ask.

Tuesday morning, traffic on Highway 6 was disrupted by around two-dozen marchers and a train of cars in the annual memorial march from the former Silver Pines camp on Sixth Line Road, to Highway 6 before entering the now fenced and gated Kanonhstaton land.

After several attempts

by Six Nations to seek proof of title from the developers, Henco Homes, a handful of Six Nations women and a few men in support, stopped construction and began the occupation of the site. In 2006 and 2007, after almost two years of tense stand-offs between Caledonia citizens and Six Nations, Ontario stepped in to cool down the whole affair by buying up the property from the developers for a premium price, successfully stopping the housing development in its tracks.

Today, 11 years later, the land in question is

quiet and peaceful but the issue of who has underlying title has still not been resolved. Ontario believes it owns the land, Caledonia believes it still owns the roads that were built in advance of the development, and Six Nations looks at the entire episode as the successful reclamation of a piece of their traditional Haldimand Tract land, never properly surrendered for sale.

The situation has boiled over a number of times since 2006, but today’s memorial march was warm and peaceful. It seems the provincial and federal governments are in no hurry to challenge Six Nations claim on the land in court, but have “allowed” Six Nations to occupy the land without pressure to remove them.

After several attempts to incite trouble, orchestrated by a small group of Caledonia citizens known as CANACE under the leadership of Gary McHale and Mark Vandermaas, that too eventually stopped and peace returned.

After Tuesday morning’s march, there was a fireside gathering where those who were instrumental in the reclamation, who have passed since, were honoured.

Women seeking full-status sperm VICTORIA — Two BC women have started a lot of discussion among indigenous people across social media after they posted an online ad privately seeking a Status Indian sperm donor.

The women, both heterosexual professionals who are best friends, say they want to live together and raise children together with a recognized Sta-

tus Indian man and say seeking a donor online seemed like it was an “easier solution”.

Initially the ad was offering compensation, however it has since been removed from Craigslist Victoria for violating its’ community standards.

The women, who identified themselves only as ‘Sisters’ wrote to the Two Row Times and said

“We've actually joked about starting a sperm bank for status, since most sperm in Canada is from the U.S and there's no native sperm donors who are fully Native or even community-involved in any of the big U.S sperm banks.”

The women said it will “be a while before we select a donor, maybe around Spring 2018.”

Mni wiconi: water is life EDITORIAL BY JONATHAN GARLOW Looks like the warlords of the U.S. are flexing their muscles down at Standing Rock again.

It seems like they are forgetting what happened to General George Armstrong Custer at the battle of Little Bighorn.

A descendent of the famed American Commander named Alisha Custer travelled to the #NODAPL demonstrations at Standing Rock to offer an apology. Alisha said: “Trauma has been scientifically proven to not only run through our DNA, but to be passed on in our DNA to our children,” she said. “I didn’t do these things, but … someone needs to stand up and say I’m sorry.” She said it was important for her to say, “Custer not only did wrong, he deserved to die for his folly.

He didn’t just betray you. He betrayed me.”

Now Trump is repeating history and betraying the Lakota Sioux once again.

To use a chess analogy, the Donald moved his first pawn a few months ago in December by selling his entire stake in Energy Transfer Partners, the corporation that is building the 1,172 mile (1,886 kilometre) black snake called the Dakota Access Pipeline. Now there isn’t a conflict of interest anymore, he says.

We do not know who the shares were sold to.

A total of almost 700 arrests have been made by the heavily militarized law enforcement agencies. The last three-dozen were arrested late last week as they held out in the spirit of Crazyhorse. There they were, the last surviving victims of 400 years of blatant genocide and the migrant government forced them from lands that are indisputably theirs.

The problem with General Custer was that he became

over confident — arrogant even.

Trump should remember that at one time the five camps held at least 10,000 people. There are millions who support the anti-pipeline initiatives started by the Lakota Sioux. There are reports that many of the activists are simply moving camps to other areas and will continue to fight on. Standing Rock is a big place.

Another question is how much will it cost to protect this vulnerable oil snake? Let’s remember that the DAPL was built by a nation of immigrants over ancient and sacred lands that belong to someone else. Can they defend this pipeline forever?

Soon the situation will become even more desperate as the pipeline encroaches farther and farther. It could be a complete victory if Standing Rock could enlist every single person in the U.S. who claims to have “Indian” lineage.

If your great-great-grandmother really was a Cherokee princess then get out there and prove it on those front lines, hoka hey! Imagine the huge influx of numbers; the pipeline wouldn’t stand a chance.

And speaking of Indians, if Cleveland doesn’t want to change their baseball team name they should be honouring our proud ancestors and us by handcuffing themselves to Dakota Access Pipeline equipment. It is now their duty. All the Redsk*n fans who don the sacred Lakota war bonnet to football games can join in as well.

For all the rest of our euro-migrant workers such as Donald Trump we have a good message to share. Custer died for your sins. No one else needs to die but the black snake.

Crees in the Carribbean

It’s been a few months in between my time at Standing Rock and this evolving story.

So much has changed since the celebration on December 5. A full environmental study would have ceased the work for at least two years, financing would be in question and there would be a significant slowdown in the Dakota Access Pipe Line — while we investigate how putting a pipeline under the Missouri River would be a detriment to many citizens; not to mention fish and wildlife their voice is never heard. Of course the election results prompted a reversal of Obama’s stop work order and DAPL has resumed in full force by Trump’s Presidential Order.

I had to get back to work, which for me often means back on the road working wherever I can. I have enjoyed

going back to my first love — the theatre. The reason I fell in love with the theatre was its immediacy with an audience. You work weeks to make the play worthy of an audience and when you get them in front of you the challenge is to rise up and tell the story. They say that only about five per cent of the population ever goes to a theatre performance. Toronto, being the third largest theatre producers in the world, only second to New York City and London, England, has up to one hundred events to enjoy nightly.

That means there are a lot of skilled theatre workers, some of them from Six Nations — geographically right between the successful summertime Shaw Festival in Niagara on the Lake and the Stratford Festivals in Stratford, Ont. In this case, I chose to go to a theatre company in Northern Ontario. I go to Magnus

Theatre in Thunder Bay, which has celebrated 50 years of producing plays in this pulp and paper town with a population of about 100,000.

I am acting in a play titled, Crees in the Caribbean — a new play by Drew Hayden Taylor, Anishnawbe born on Curve Lake Rez near Peterborough, Ont. It is a ‘dramedy’ in two acts. A drama and comedy combined is a dramedy.

The play is about two elder Crees from Northern Saskatchewan who go on a trip to Mexico. The play is underwritten by our five children for a 35th wedding anniversary.

There are questions raised by my character, Cecil, as to why we actually came to Mexico. I suspect in the first act that it’s a plot by my family to send me out with a bang. Meanwhile my wife Evie develops a reCONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Signs of change told by the Old Ones and women today Here’s what one Ohsweken woman said when talking about this week’s weather: “our mother (earth) is going to go through some major changes and so will we”.

There are stories about what happens when the world changes. Stories include fireballs, angels, and great monsters devouring humankind. Movies like 2012, Knowing, Armageddon, and Deep Impact show sudden catastrophes striking the world. The number of gloom-anddoom movies numbs the mind.

The Old Ones don’t say that. In our own master-narrative called the Great Law (Kayaneresherakowa) change happens slowly. We see climate change, increases in new diseases, strange behaviour by wildlife and more. We also see social conflicts resulting from battles over the world’s resources. These changes

happen before we should worry about the ‘Big One’.

Change is slow.

Indigenous People predicted the influence of the sun on changes to the earth. Changes to the sun and the earth changed human history in the past, where humans were forced to shelter themselves, but emerged to begin a new era of human life on earth. These events are in the collective-memory of Indigenous People.

Our women say these changes are coming here.

And the most important change is the effect of the sun on our weather and growing food. The result — food shortages and higher food costs. Food shortages facing populations from economic collapse are related to increases in climate change and natural events that are beyond human control.

In the same way, modern western researchers predict effects on human

life similar to those of our Old Ones and our women today. Throughout the past 20-years international experts warned about the collapse of the paper-money economy. The economy coincides with changes to food production. In the near future you could be driving around with a trunk-load of $20 bills and you won’t be able to buy a loaf of bread.

Here’s what happened: at the end of George W. Bush’s presidency, Bush had printed $1.5 trillion printed that was then pumped into the world economy. Experts say that Bush’s 2009 move only delayed the inevitable collapse of paper money that was predicted in the Worldwatch Institute’s State of the World Reports in the 1990s. Experts like Noam Chomsky and Gerard Celente projected the effect of injecting paper money into the world’s economy.

Chomsky, a professor at MIT in the U.S., sees Bush’s money move as a stalling tactic for an inevitable collapse. Celente, director of the Trends Research Institute, describes the money

lationship with our maid, Manuela a young vibrant Mexican girl who is part Indian herself. Evie realizes the maid is pregnant and begins helping her clean our luxury hotel room in consideration of Manuela’s pending pregnancy.

The play is about two hours and is a warm laugha-minute until it ends with Evie losing her life, not Cecil. We last see Cecil reminiscing about Evie’s life and how it paralleled Manuela’s story of a not wanted pregnant woman. The play weaves a funny, yet powerfully entertaining two acts together and moves audiences emotionally and more often than not they stood up applauding because we all appreciate a good story.

That’s all you get to do as an actor, tell it like it is. Of course a lot goes into telling it like it is. Relationship with other actors, relations with management, the director, the playwright, assistant stage manager, set

designer, lighting designer, costume designer, publicity and marketing, front of house and/or box office manager — it’s all quite the feat. What other job is out there where you get applauded for your work every night, eight shows a week, throughout six days on a normal theatre run.

Acting on stage is like nothing else. It is like you are supposed to be relaxed and centred to do five things at once. Knowing the lines and what the lines mean. Since a lot of the lines are funny and are jokes, you, the actor, begin to anticipate when and if the audience will laugh too.

All of a sudden you are playing the audience because you and the other actors are in a fun groove after having run it dozens of times by now. But at any time the wrong line can come out and you end up five lines ahead of where you are supposed to be in the script and then the correct line actually repeats

itself and you are all of sudden in the second act instead of the first act where you were 30 seconds ago.

You’ve got to love it and I do. I really do.

I’m off next to Victoria, B.C. next to act in a Pulitzer prize-winning play titled Our Town by Thornton Wilder, and then off to New York City to mount Indian Joe the musical for audiences this summer. Indian Joe is centred on a homeless Native American who has lived in Waco, Texas for 64 years. The producers, NY Film & Stage, have a big hit currently on Broadway called Hamilton so the possible break for us to break into Broadway audiences with a contemporary Indian story are real for 2017.

For years I have fleetingly attempted to have a performance theatre venue here on the Six Nations and New Credit territories.

Both forecasters say that economic problems lead to social and economic instability where large unemployed parts of society will riot for food. Dire predictions include the formation of marauding bands of homeless people travelling the country from town to town, pillaging and stealing. Celente and Chomsky say this type of increased social instability increases after 2010. These experts suggest that printing money in 2009 only delayed the inevitable collapse of the dollar-economy that was forecast in the 1990s.

Ironically, the wealthiest oil-rich countries on earth are already experiencing social chaos. The collapse of regimes like that of Moammar Gadhafi and Saddam Hussein resulted in civil wars in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The rise of ISIS and increased numbers of refugees shows the resulting social chaos.

The social chaos stretching from Libya to Iran is coming here.

Though the focus on the financial markets and the paper money system creates fear about life savings and investments, these factors distract people from the simple truth of human life — those who eat survive. In our society, this is translated as “those who can buy food survive” for people who depend on others to make their food.

A stark picture of climate change shows up in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Canada, the U.S., Russia, Norway and Denmark continually address issues related to the Arctic Ocean sea-lanes as the ice melts.

Science raised alarms about the Antarctic icemelt raising ocean levels by two-feet. The Edmonton Journal (May 3, 2009) article “Dawn of a new Arctic” describes political change in northern politics that has a context linked to ecological disasters like the sinking of the Exxon Valdez.

In an attempt to balance gloom and doom predictions in his 2001 article “Climate change and as-

tronomy” astronomer David Chapman makes a clear distinction about what constitutes “normal” for the Earth’s climate. The Earth’s climate continually changes with eras of warm and cold. However, the Sun flares have a direct impact on the Earth’s climate. The researchers pose that human impacts on our environment needs to be balanced against the effect of the Sun’s cycles over which humans have no control.

Clearly, the effect of solar cycles on the Earth has economic implications. According to Sten Odenwald and James Green in their 2008 article “Bracing for a Solar Superstorm” the electromagnetic affect of solar activity potentially could disrupt the world’s telecommunications systems. Their warning concerns the economic impact for replacing $70 billion worth of satellites.

In 2007 the National Academy of Science (NAS) in the U.S. said that increasing solar storm activity will disrupt communications technological systems. They report that

Like, A Tribe Called Red or Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip. We could pro-

duce events like the many award shows that happen annually in other venues.

Indspire or the Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards.

Then we’d be producing television in the community. Giving our young people a place to grow artistically in many different professions currently not even dreamed of. When Robbie Robertson comes home again we have a place for him. We have a history of performers in our community to numerous to mention.

Arts education should be developed in our community at an early age. It helps create a more inspired student if they have some creative options and gives them a voice. We could learn much from their participation in different art activities. It expands their knowledge base. Helps youth make positive interesting choices. Builds self-confidence.

We have no chance of recovering from some of the issues we face like drug

and alcohol abuse, incarceration, welfare dependency and more if we don’t present options at a young age.

I want to wrap up by saying Standing Rock was a precious experience for me on so many levels. I feel until the people of North America realize Aboriginals, Indians and Native Americans are equal to all other races of man; until all the people in the medicine wheel of life are acknowledged, society is destined to fail. The rights of all human beings are being assaulted at Standing Rock for all to witness. Water is indeed Life and always has been. But until living and witnessing the camps at Standing Rock I have never seen Native Peoples being respected, loved, and supported by so many races and countries from around the world. That was and is my verification; that Human Rights for all people are necessary to find and sustain peace.

Is Brantford’s $200,000 fluoridation plan necessary?

BRANTFORD – With a new $200,000 fluoridation system being considered in Brantford, maybe it’s time to rethink the whole fluoridation thing in the first place.

The practice of adding fluoride to city water supplies is on the decline and has been eliminated in dozens of countries around the world and mu-

nicipalities in Ontario.

These countries and cities have found that existing sources are enough to prevent tooth decay by themselves, making the addition of fluoride to the water supply both redundant and expensive, but not totally devoid of risk. Today’s toothpaste, mouth wash, milk, and fluoride treatments at the dentist, for instance offer the same protection.

There are trace fluorides found naturally in most water supplies.

But it is possible to get too much fluoride in your system, which can cause teeth to develop brown ridges. It can also attack the bones in high concentrations.

The City of Brantford was the first municipality in Canada to begin the practice back in 1945. It was an experiment that

the people of Brantford knew nothing about for at least three months after they had been drinking it. At that time, extensive follow up research was to have been done to check the long term affects, if any, on the users. Apparently, this was never done, or if it was, never made public.

Hutton was the president of the Eugenics Society of Canada before taking the job with the City of Brantford. Many other noted city personalities, like Alexander Graham Bell, also belonged to, and held prominent positions of influence within the Eugenics Movement and were openly excited when Hitler’s Germany joined the movement just prior to the Second World War. Eugenics is a pseudo-science advocating the improvement of human heredity traits through the promotion of higher reproduction of those deemed to possess more desired traits, and reduced reproduction of less desired people and traits.

During the War, Nazi scientists used fluoride and other chemicals to experiment on imprisoned Jews as a possible means of controlling mass populations. They found the addition of large amounts of fluoride in their water supplies caused prisoners to become more docile and easier to manipulate.

USAF Major George R. Jordan testified before Un-American Activity committees of Congress in the 1950s that in his post as U.S. Soviet liaison officer, the Soviets openly admitted to: “using the fluoride in the water supplies in their gulags (concentration camps), to make the prisoners stupid, docile, and subservient”.

Fluoride is the slurry that is left after the manufacturing of phosphorous fertilizer. It was discovered as a potential tooth decay retardant in the late 1930s, but Nazi German scientists wondered what it would do to people if applied in large doses.

A recent study of fluorinated versus non-fluorinated countries shows “tooth decay rates are unequivocally in decline equally well in fluoridated countries as in non-fluoridated countries.”

The practice has been stopped in several countries including the Netherlands, Belgium, Swit-

zerland, Germany and Portugal, and others are considering the move.

Many cities within the U.S. and elsewhere have also banned the practice.

John Colquhoun was a high level municipal councillor in Auckland, New Zealand, trained in dentistry and served as that city’s Principal Dental Officer and was once a proponent of the use of fluoride. He is now an outspoken critic. He has done a worldwide research project visiting several countries and collecting data. He found that tooth decay is in fact on the decline, but no more in fluoridated countries as non-fluoridated ones.

“The current Maximum Acceptable Concentration (MAC) of 1.5 milligram per litre of fluoride in drinking water is unlikely to cause adverse health effects, including cancer, bone fracture, immunotoxicity, reproductive/ developmental toxicity, genotoxicity, and/or neurotoxicity,” according to the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Committee on Drinking Water.

Most bottled water does not contain added fluoride; however, trace levels are in all water. Municipality of Lakeshore former Mayor Tom Bain was faced with the same dilemma Brantford is in with aged fluoridation equipment in need of replacement.

“Spending $340,000 on upgrades to the water filtration plant that must be completed before fluoridation can resume in Cornwall.”

Council rejected its use as the Cornwall Seaway News reported in 2016.

Six Nations new state of the art water treatment plant will continue to reject fluoride to the water supply, according to the Elected Band Council.

If it makes no significant difference to one’s dental health, but may produce unwanted side effects like fluorosis and learning disabilities, and will cost Brantford $200,000 and more, one must ask, why add it to municipal or community water supplies in the first place?

SIX NATIONS – Tracey Anthony, owner of Vision Artwork, is finding out how to balance his passion for visual art with his custom T-shirt shop located on the corner of First Line and Highway Six. A true artist’s understanding of bills and responsibilities as an unavoidable part of life often lead them to merge the want and need to create with what they do to bring home the bacon.

Anthony, who has been an artist his entire life and studied at OCAD, has a very unique eye when it comes to creating original pieces.

“Screen printing apparel is the main thing I do here,” he says. “I also do embroidery, graphic design, promotional materials and art when I have time.”

“I’ve been drawing since I was three years old, it’s just something I’ve always done. I didn’t get serious about it until I was in high school when I had to figure out what I was going to do for college”, says Anthony. “I went to OCAD for four years and did a year at Sheridan [College in Oakville, Ont.] for animation.”

“I started my business when I was around 28 [or] 29 [years old] at home in my garage. I do everything. I’m the secretary.

I’m the janitor. I get some help from students on summer break, but other than that it’s just me.”

Rebs give back

OHSWEKEN – One usually thinks of the Six Nations Food Bank during the Christmas season, but the need is a year round one which Ellen Rose Jamieson, Food Bank co-ordinator, is all too familiar with. That’s why she was so pleased when the Rebels made a donation.

“We really appreciate the donation of

food as well as this cheque,” she said when the donation was made on Monday, February 27. “The Rebels have been doing this for some time now and it is really appreciated.”

Team president Scott Maracle is proud to be able to contribute back to the community that supports them and thanks those who contributed at the special fundraising game.

The Six Nations Rebels have been giving back to the community a couple times a year for quite sometime and the most recent donation was delivered to the Six Nations Food Bank Monday, February 27. Ontario teacher guilty TORONTO — A disciplinary committee found an Ontario high school teacher guilty of professional misconduct Wednesday for telling students vaccines could kill them.

Timothy Sullivan was found guilty of five acts including abusing students psychologically or emotionally.

Sullivan shouted at nurses and obtained the insert from a vaccine being administered to students.

He then read all the potential side effects to his class after he discovered nurses were not fully informing students about the potential risks to receiving the vaccines.

Sullivan defended himself in the hearings and says he is not anti-vaccination but pro-informed consent.

The Ontario Teacher’s College is now seeking a reprimand, one month suspension and anger management courses as penalties.

SIX NATIONS — The Iroquois Caucus says it is unanimously condemning a plan to move radioactive liquid from Chalk River, Ontario across the International border to South Carolina, using public roads and bridges.

The Caucus says the transport is unprecedented and could have a devastating impact on the Great Lakes and St. Law-

That waterway provides drinking water for an estimated 40 million people on both sides of the border.

Man shot and killed, police investigating homicide OHSWEKEN — Six Nations Police are actively investigating a homicide on the territory after a Six Nations man died suffering a gunshot wound to the head.

While limited details have been made available on the shooting, a brief statement from police said 27 year old Dustin Monture of Ohsweken was found by residents on the lawn of a Tuscarora Road home.

According to police, those residents believed Monture to be suffering head injuries due to an assault and transported him to West Haldimand General Hospital.

He was then taken by air ambulance to Hamilton General in critical condi-

Funding frozen for Indigenous Affairs

OTTAWA — Federal budget watchers say nearly $3 billion dollars in funds approved for this last year will go unspent.

The parliamentary budget office says several funds have been held back including $100 million for Indigenous Affairs.

An additional $829 million for Infrastructure Canada, $366 million for National Defence and $192 million for FisheFries and Oceans has also been administratively frozen.

By TRT Staff SIX NATIONS – After a study was conducted in regards to creating Onkwe'hon:we language speakers, Jeremy Green presented the results to an audience within the Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP).

On top of the results of the study that began last March and completed this February, the information comes from the collective experiences of those maintaining, studying, learning or teaching Haudenosaunee languages to help uncover the path to creating a “critical mass of language speakers”.

“I'm really excited to share the results of this study with you,” said Green, who was hired by SNP to conduct the study.

As SNP is the only host of an indigenous language Bachelor of Arts program, this study is incredibly helpful to those that listened in. However, Green can only report for the 103 people that were interviewed, but out of the study, Green was able to

describe three main paths taken by current language speakers.

The first is 15 years of self-study, traditional ceremonial participation, teaching in immersion settings, and residing with first language speakers. The second is 10 years of either elementary or high school language classes, adult immersion, participation in traditional language, and residing with first language speakers. The final is five years after finding inspiration from a role model, then actively pursuing adult immersion, language use on social media, participation in longhouse ceremonies, and working with a helpful peer group.

But, he explained that Haudenosaunee languages are so different from English, that it takes five acquisitional steps to learn the language; beginning with motivation.

“The process of acquiring proficiency or becoming a speaker of one of our languages is unique to our languages,” he said.

“It's different from other languages — the world

over. We are coming to understand how best to teach our Haudenosaunee languages. So, simply put; Onkwe'hon:weneha, is not English.”

“The languages are only similar in the fact that they are communicative devices, and that's where the similarities end,” he said. “The biggest difference being that English is analytic word-by-word, and our languages are poly-synthetic or comprised of a whole bunch of little parts and pieces.”

A great example of this would be the use of prefixes within Haudenosaunee languages, as well as the ability to say an entire sentence or ask an entire question — with just one word. But the chart he provided the audience showed that the number of current language speakers is small, but increasing.

“Even though we're losing speakers, we're creating more,” he assured.

And with programs and studies running such as this one, it is hoped for.

SIX NATIONS — Lawyer Aaron Detlor is now facing legal pressure from the Family Responsibility Office (FRO) according to an anonymous source. who alleges Detlor is chronically and intentionally late with support payments for his son.

Recent FRO records obtained and presented to the TRT shows that a Default Hearing was ordered by FRO on December 21, 2016 and set for Wednesday, February 15, 2017 in Toronto.

Detlor did not show up for that meeting and an automatic arrest warrant was prepared by the FRO, which will be executed should Detlor fail to appear at a rescheduled hearing date.

According to FRO policy, a Default Hearing is the most extreme method for enforcing child support arrears that is available to the FRO — it carries the possibility of the inclusion of a jail term of 180 days or up to six months if 'sheltering' is expected.

A 30-page Case Activity FRO report on Detlor’s child support case, chronicles years of what the source calls, "abusive, neglectful and dangerously misguided and controlling behaviour".

According to the source and documentary evidence TRT has received, "this on-going child support withholding pattern illustrates a total disregard for the rules of law; the unethical manipulation of a system that as a lawyer

FRO previously suspended Detlor’s Ontario Driver’s License numerous times as the main enforcement action to recover Child Support monies owed according to a court ordered agreement registered with the FRO. Official records with the FRO show Detlor made lump sum payments up to six months past due, and then only after enforcement actions had been initiated.

The source says the FRO has also made a professional complaint about the case because Detlor is an Ontario lawyer licensed to practise as a barrister and solicitor in the province under the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Detlor says he considers the FRO case a per-

sonal and private matter, however he offers, “it is untrue that there is any investigation before the Ontario Bar Association or that I am in arrears of any kind”, as he was asked in a text message.

Detlor was correct in his statement denying an investigation before the Ontario Bar Association — the complaint was made by the FRO to the Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC), not the Ontario Bar Association.

According to their website, LSUC is the governing body of the legal profession serving in the public interest and the body that has licensed Detlor to practice law in Ontario.

Legislation passed by the Government of Ontario authorizes the Law Society to license Ontario's lawyers and paralegals and regulate their conduct, competence and capacity.

Charlie Angus vying for the NDP leadership

COBALT – First Nations author, journalist, broadcaster, musician, and politician Charlie Angus has entered the race for the NDP federal leadership to challenge interim leader Tom Mulcair.

He was inspired by a chance meeting with Jack Layton several years ago and traced his political career before entering the arena himself.

Angus has been MP for the riding of Timmins-James Bay since 2004. The riding includes a district that serves the troubled communities of Attawapiskat and Kashechewan First Nations.

He has been an outspoken advocate for land

claims settlements and the appalling conditions at several reserves in the north and is impatient with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s perceived slow action on both counts.

Regarding promises made to these and other communities within his riding, Angus said “I’m sad to say five years later we’re still waiting and every day we lose children to systemic negligence and underfunding. And it has to stop, and it’s going to stop — and that’s my promise. Reconciliation is not a hashtag.”

As NDP leader Angus promises he will “bring a little bit of class back to politics” and “stand up in Parliament and fight for the people who have been written off the political

and economic map of Canada.”

He is also concerned with the approval of pipeline projects and his relatively cozy relations with U.S. President Donald Trump.

In 2011, CTV News Channel chose him in the top three MPs of the year, along with Stephen Harper and Jack Layton.

After the 2015 federal election, he was appointed NDP critic for Indigenous and Northern Affairs in the 42nd Canadian Parliament and elected Caucus Chair in January 2016.

Angus also uses his band Grievous Angels, which he fronts and writes and performs songs about the Indigenous condition in Canada and has so for many years.

Along with doing jui-jitsu when she was a kid, Midthunder trained one-on-one in Tae Kwan Do to help prepare her for the action required throughout the series.

This is mainly because her character is “very action based.”

“She's very strong and she's not one to dwell,” Midthunder said.

And outside of her character, neither is she — Midthunder spoke to Indian Country Media about considering ste-

reotypes before she accepts roles.

“As someone who has a job that is in the public eye I want to represent my people as a whole, as best I can and I feel that a large part of it to me is being more than your ethnicity, that’s a large part of who you are,” she said.

Midthunder will be kicking-butt on screen, so even though the first season is already off to a roaring start, if you're interested in a psychological show with indigenous representation – look no further.

Considered to be a “very different” series for Marvel Studios, Legion is less focused on

By Jim Windle CALEDONIA – Brandon Lindberg has two games left in the regular season but has already broken the 100 point mark leading the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs and the league in scoring with 105 points by way of 40 goals and 55 assists in 42 games played to date.

Born in Waterloo, Lindberg came to the Corvairs early this season by way of Saginaw and Sarnia of the OLA. He was selected

in the fifth round (87th overall) by the Saginaw Spirit in 2012 OHL Priority Draft, and is a leader in the dressing room and on the ice.

At age 21, this will be his last year of Jr. and he is making the best of it.

Not far behind with 88 points in 39 games played so far, is Adam Craievich. The 20-yearold Sarnia native brings his six-foot-one-inch tall frame, accurate shot and playmaking skills set him very high on the scouts

list as well.

After making history last season with their third consecutive Sutherland Cup, coach Mike Bullard and general manager Brian Rezzeto had to begin this season with pretty well a whole new deck of cards after several of last years winners are now overage.

CALEDONIA – Finishing first overall in the GOJHL Jr. B rankings should be a good thing right? But general manager Brian Rizzetto and coach Mike Bullard are not too pleased with how the departure of the Thorold Blackhawks would impact the playoff matchups.

As it stands, the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs will sit out the first round of the playoffs and wait for what happens in the conference semi-final. That means no game action, and for a very hot team the layoff could cool the furnace by the time they take on their next opponent.

“We might be down for three weeks,” says Rizzetto.

Saturday night in Pelham was more or less a points gathering exercise as they completed the season in Pelham against the last playoff berth holders, the Pelham Panthers.

The Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs closed out the

regular season with an east 8-0 win over the last playoff berth holders, the Pelham Panthers.

The game meant nothing in the final standings; it did offer them a last opportunity to use the Panthers as sparing partners heading into the playoffs.

Caledonia outshot the Panthers 53-12 with Bradley Van Schubert recording the shutout. Brandon Lindberg, Adam Craievich and Bailey Fletcher each put up two goals and two assists to power the win.

The Corvairs finished in first place in the division and the league with a 50 game record of 44 wins 5 losses one tie and no OT losses for 89 points, six points ahead of closest rivals, the St. Catharines Falcons with 83 points.

Lindberg lead the league in scoring with 109 points while missing six games this year, and Daniel Chenard topped all goaltenders with a 1.77 goals against average and a saves percentage of .922.

A weekend of Blast

The Brantford Blast will enter the post season cold after losing the last two games of the regular season to the first place Stoney Creek Generals this past weekend.

The Blast couldn’t seem to fire it up Friday night at then Brantford and District Civic Centre and lost the first leg of a home and home series against the Stoney Creek Generals 9-5 in Allan Cup Sr. AAA Hockey. Saturday night in Stoney Creek they dropped a 5-0 decision.

The regular season culminated in a showdown between the first place Stoney Creek Generals and the fourth place Brantford Blast.

Friday night, a poorly played second period was

the downfall of an otherwise pretty good effort by the Blast. The Generals scored first at 3:22, but Brantford’s Charlie Stephens put things right again at 7:10 from Jacob Ledyard and Derek Medeiros. Nathan Pageau scored late in the period to give the Generals a 2-1 first period lead.

Brantford got the large crowd into the game at 1:47 of the second period with Chris Knight tying the game at 2-2. From that point on, the Blast had to play catch up as the Generals attacked to net four unanswered goals to close the second period with Stoney Creek well ahead, 6-2.

Novice comeback

OHSWEKEN — Six Nations No. 1 LL Novice squad shook off a 2-0 first period deficit to win their Saturday afternoon matchup with the Delhi Rockets at the Gaylord Powless Arena.

Delhi jumped into a 2-0 lead with Kenneth Moyer and Heath Stefek doing the honours. With 2:07 remaining in the period Six Nations’ No. 10 scored from Silas Anderson and Tyttan Jacobs to end the first period with Delhi still clinging to a 2-1 lead.

ond period, this time from Tryton Jacobs and Calder Anderson and the score was tied at 2-2.

The mysterious No. 10, whose name did not appear on the game sheet, scored his second of the game before the end of the period to give Six Nations a 3-2 lead with period left to play.

Emmitt Vyse-Hill kept the ball rolling for Six Nations with an unassisted goal halfway into the final frame and three minutes later, Kalem Powless put the finishing touched on the 5-2 Six Nations win.

Six Nations Intertown Atoms took the better side of a 3-1 final against the Delhi Atoms Saturday afternoon at the Gaylord Powless Arena. Kenneth Porter put Six Nations on the board from Warren Cook. Delhi evened the score before the period ended, but Alex Henhawk scored the game winner at 33 seconds into the second period from Athan Martin and Joshua Jonathan-Shawana. SIX NATIONS – The Six Nations Snipers were ambushed 12-10 by the Toronto Monarchs Saturday night in Toronto in Arena Lacrosse League Action.

By itself, the loss may not mean much this early in the season, as they are tied with the Oshawa Outlaws for first place with 10 points.

But Oshawa hold two games in hand over the Snipers and the Paris RiverWolves and St. Catharines ShockWave are both only two points behind Six Nations with identical 4-4 records.

Toronto used Six Nations bus legs to jump into a 4-2 first quarter lead. Haodais Maracle scored both Sniper goals.

Six Nations responded with a huge second quarter with Layne Smith and Roger Vyse scored early in the second to draw even. After Jordan Dance put Toronto ahead again, Joel Shepley, Patrick Corbett and Smith, with his second, all scored powerplay goals to close the half with Six Nations leading 7-5.

The Monarchs fought back in the third to even the score at 8-8 after Roger Vyse had added a Sniper goal. It all came down to the last 15 minutes. Monarchs’ scored at 44 seconds and again at

3:54 with a short-handed goal before Roger Vyse clawed one back at 4:32 from Craig Point and Travis Longboat.

The teams swapped goals the rest of the way but Toronto stayed just a step ahead despite Maracle’s third of the game.

Vyce recorded three goals and four assists, Maracle went 3-2, Point earned four assists and Layne Smith scored two and assisted on one in the Six Nations loss.

With the Snipers out of town, Six Nations fans got to watch the Paris RiverWolves lose to the St. Catharines ShockWave 15-10 at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, Saturday afternoon.

Paris started off on the right foot building a 4-2 first quarter lead, which included a highlight reel goal scored by Liam Patten. At 13:42 of the opening quarter he took a short pass from Jamie McMahon deep in his own zone and sprinted all alone the length of the floor to score the last goal of the quarter.

St. Catharines blew the doors off the Paris lead in the second quarter, outscoring them 7-1 to take a 9-5 lead into the third quarter. The barrage began 1:23 into the quarter when Anthony Patterson, Chris Attwood, with two, Bryan Neufeld, Jeff Wittig and

Patterson with his second and third goals of the game, and two by Attwood made it 9-5 at the half. Dan Keane logged the lone second quarter Paris goal.

The ShockWave improved their position to 11-5 early in the third quarter. Paris came back with goals by Mike Melnychenko and Keane but St. Kitts made a late quarter push with goals scored by Wittig and Neufeld to put a six goal cushion under the third quarter 13-7 lead.

Keane and Brenden Thenhaus Paris fans a little hope early in the fourth quarter but St. Catharines had found their mojo by this time and kept their distance for the 15-10 win. Thenhaus’ wrap around goal thrilled Wolves fans but it proved to be not enough.

Six Nations fans get another double-header at the ILA this coming weekend. St. Catharines has been playing it’s home games at the ILA and will host the Peterborough Timbermen at 1 p.m., followed at 4 p.m.

Is boiling water safe?

As long as your water comes from a source that is regularly inspected, you can boil it as many times as you want. The idea behind this myth is that boiling water concentrates any solid substances that are in the water.

Maybe you've seen white chalky stuff stuck to the sides of your pot or teakettle after you've boiled water (it's just calcium, which is harmless).

As long as there's nothing bad in your water to concentrate, there's no health concern.

So — what if there is something nasty lurking in your water? If your water contains arsenic, lead or nitrates, then boiling, it will increase the concentration of those substances. At what point does

it become dangerous?

That's hard to tell, but that's why water needs to be regularly inspected.

The levels of both nitrates and arsenic are regulated, and water supplies must be monitored in towns and cities, so if your tap water comes from a city water source, it's safe.

These toxic substances can get into your water a variety of ways. Ground water may contain nitrates, which are chemicals often found in fertilizer, and arsenic that may occur naturally or from a farm or industrial waste.

If you live in a rural area and have a well, the water must be tested.

Lead doesn't come from the water source itself. The contamination happens at home. Lead can contaminate a water supply through old plumbing that's held together with lead solder or stored in tanks lined with lead. Exposure to lead can cause emotional and behavioural problems.

Indigenous female Polaris prize winners collaborate on new track TORONTO — Indigenous artists Buffy Sainte-Marie and Tanya Tagaaq announced they’ve paired up to collaborate on a new track that had its online debut yesterday.

Sainte-Marie wrote the song about Alaskan dog

sled racer George Attla which she performs with Tagaaq.

Both of the female indigenous artists are Polaris prize winners. Marie took the 2015 award while Tagaaq won the title in 2014.

McMaster University invites applications for the Director of the McMaster Indigenous Research Institute (MIRI). The institute was officially launched on 1 July 2016 (*details are available in Note 1). The Director will have an internationally distinguished program of research and teaching record in any area of Indigenous Research. S/he will be appointed (tenure track or tenured) at the Associate Professor or Professor level to one or more of the six faculties at McMaster University (DeGroote School of Business, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences). The appointment as Director will be for a five year, renewable term.

The Director is expected to raise awareness, attract substantial research support, educate and advance Indigenous research methodologies. S/he will emphasize and support community capacity building and research priorities, pro-mote and foster innovation, collaboration and partnership, enhance existing research infrastructure at McMaster and build sustainable Indigenous research infrastructure. S/he will also be very active in the recruitment, mentorship and training of undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and work to build greater research capacity and strength in Indigenous research across all faculties at McMaster University - * Terms of Reference are available in Note 2.

McMaster has a geographic proximity to Six Nations of the Grand River, the largest First Nation in Canada, along with a quarter century of collaborative work developing Indigenous educational and research programs. President Patrick Deane’s principles and priorities articulated in his “Forward with Integrity” open letter (*Note 3) to the University community include: cultivating human potential; adopting a multi-disciplinary perspective; and engaging our local, national, and international communities.

Furthermore, he has given our researchers the mandate to “build on the work that has already begun to strengthen and support Indigenous learners and Indigenous scholarship”.

Additionally, McMaster University is ranked in the top 100 of both the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Ranking of World Universities and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. A medium-sized university, it nonetheless has the sixth-largest research income in Canada. It has a large, attractive campus, the interior of which is open only to pedestrians and cyclists, and is at the western end of Lake Ontario. The University is minutes from downtown Hamilton and the activities that a major city has to offer. Hamilton has been ranked among the top cities in Canada to do business and to invest.

Mitten: Rodger Peter Peacefully surrounded by the love of his family at the Brantford General Hospital on February 22, 2017 at the age of 77 years. Beloved companion of the late Darlene Silversmith. Loving father of Dwayne “Dago” (Cindy), Kimberly (Glen), Dena (Frank), and Roger (Amy). Dear Papa to numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Brother of Elizabeth Williams, Winnie Thomas (Ron), Sandra Silversmith (Gary), Peter Mitten (Kathy), and Brenda Mitten. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

Predeceased by parents Peter and Theresa (Snow) Mitten and siblings Manuel, Ramon, Lance, and Karen. Rodger was a member of the Ironworkers International Local 736, Hamilton.
