Indigenous author Alicia Elliott wins emerging writer award STAFF REPORT

TORONTO — Acclaimed author Tanya Talaga has chosen Indigenous writer Alicia Elliott as the winner of the RBC Taylor Emerging

Writer Award.

The honour comes with $10,000 and mentorship by Talaga, who won the RBC Taylor Prize in February for her book Seven Fallen Feathers: Racism, Death, and Hard Truths in a Northern City.

Talaga's win came with

Talaga says of Elliott, ``She is lyrical, heart-felt and she tells searing truths of Canada today.''

Elliott says the news is ``incredibly humbling.''

These new beds are part of the province’s commitment to build 5,000 new beds by 2022 and more than 30,000 new beds over the next decade.

Ontario is also investing more than $300 million over the next three years to hire an additional registered nurse at every long-term care home, and to increase the provincial average to four hours of daily care per resident by 2022.

This will ensure that every home will have staff with specialized training in behavioural supports and in palliative and endof-life care.

OHSWEKEN — Six Nations’ Iroquois Lodge will be one of the beneficiaries of an announced 500 more long-term care beds for Indigenous seniors across the province.

The new provincially funded long-term care beds will deliver culturally appropriate care for Indigenous peoples, reduce wait times and meet the demands of an aging population.

Through collaboration and continuous engagement between the province and Indigenous partners, new long-term care beds will be coming to Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Band Council’s Iroquois Lodge in Ohsweken.

The victim lost conciousness. When she awoke, police said she discovered she had been sexually assaulted and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from her purse.

The suspect is described as male, 5’1” with a medium build. He had brownish green eyes and was wearing a black ski mask, black hooded sweater, black jeans, shoes and gloves.

The victim said no vehicle was seen at the time of the attack.

Police are looking to speak with anyone with information.

OHSWEKEN — The rumble you might hear over Ohsweken this Friday night is not a coming storm, but rather a rite of spring for race fans in these parts since 1996.

The long anticipation is just about over for fans, drivers and crews as Ohsweken Speedway prepares for its 23rd season of racing with May 11th’s Lucas Oil Test and Tune night, this Friday.

It’s a time when track officials, staff, racers and mechanics get to try each other on before the season officially begins Friday, May 18th. It’s also time to reconnection with the fraternity of grease monkeys and speed demons.

Ohsweken Speedway’s 23rd season begins in earnest on Friday, May 18 with an excitement program including; Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars; Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars; Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks and HRW Automotive Mini Stocks.

Speedway officials are inviting, “all cars competing at Ohsweken in 2018 to

test their cars on the lightning-fast 3/8-mile clay oval, including the track’s four weekly divisions, the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars, Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars, Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks and HRW Automotive Mini Stocks.”

The pit gate will open at 5:00 pm for competitors at a cost of $25 per driver and $10 per crew member. Cars are scheduled to be on track beginning at 6:00 pm. Practice will alternate for divisions.

There will be a trade show display to inform about the 2017 trust grant recipients and the work they are doing.

Displays by the Six Nations Public Library, Two Row on the Grand, Grand River Pow Wow Committee and Six Nations Public Works will be shown.

So far around $6.7 million dollars has been invested into Six Nations

by the EDT. Funds are contributions from the Six Nations Development Corporations three revenue streams — including on reserve businesses, partnerships in energy production and other joint partnerships.

The AGM will be held at the Gathering Play by the Grand Event Centre on Wednesday, May 16 starting at 6pm.

OHSWEKEN — For the last four months, Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation has been working to overhaul the Six Nations Community Plan.

“The Community Plan is a living document that requires on-going feedback,” said Stephanie Burnham, Community Plan Facilitator.

“Individual Community Members are the real planners. Our role as facilitators is to gather the voices of the community into one document, which departments and organizations can use to collectively guide Six Nations towards a positive future. Community members can also use the plan to see where their responsibility lies in creating a brighter future for generations to come.”

Throughout the next year, the community planning team will be co-

ordinating conversations with the intent to capture the collective vision, values and goals of the Six Nations of the Grand River. They are asking Six Nations families and individuals to share what they see as the needs of the community and want to engage in discussions with community members about healthy and positive solutions to address them.

The current community plan identified 7 areas the people of Six Nations want prioritized: Mother Earth, Environment, Employment and Education, Economic Development, Community, Well-Being and Arts & Culture.

The entire existing community plan can be found online at the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation’s website.

Currently the community planning team is reviewing what was achieved in the document since it was first set out in 2010 and what people

want to see done going forward.

To gather feedback, the team will be out in the community hosting pop-up booths, attending community events, and holding focus groups for each of the seven priorities in the plan.

From April 16th to June 1st the focus will be on the priority-Mother Earth.

The CP Team has already been out at several Earth Day events and Community Energy Nights to ignite the conversation. A focus group for this category is planned for May 30: afternoon session from 1-4 PM and dinner session from 6-9PM at the Six Nations Community Hall.

Residents can also request a Community Plan Facilitator to be present at family or group discussions or to gather feedback. Anyone interested can sign up to participate in a focus group, please contact engagement@ sndevcorp.ca or 519-7531950 ext. 6036.

Religious extremism at Six Nations EDITORIAL BY JONATHAN GARLOW It's almost charming but mostly insulting when someone finds out you are from Six Nations and they just have to say, "Oh! I get my cigarettes there do you know (insert generic rezname here)?"

These people ask as if I have the entire band list memorized and categorized within my giant egg shaped skull. Of course I don't because there's tens of thousands of people living here.

It's all relative I suppose. There are many remote reservations within the confines of Canada that have tiny populations of 200 people or less. Six Nations is a metropolis compared to those ones.

After growing up on Six Nations and also after travelling to many other reserves I can say with full authority that there isn't just one kind of "Indigenous person".

There isn't even one kind of Six Nations person.

Even though we may share the same Iroquois ancestors we have very diverse people groups with totally different worldviews within our communities.

Six Nations has academics, athletes, business people, workers and artists – children, women and men of every age. Then there's our activists, free thinkers and philosophers – this one's for you’s.

The colonizers brought the concept of money and debt with them. They also brought the ideas of heaven and hell which one might label as Colonial Christianity (the Indian-killing, land-stealing type of Christianity).

I suggest that the disunity within Six Nations stems from our attitudes and responses towards these foreign ideologies.

On the most extreme religious right are Six Nations residents who believe in nothing else but the Bible and the Bible alone. They do not recognize anything of value when exploring our own rich cultural history. In the most extreme cases of selfhate, I have met people in this small minority who said that North American colonization was necessary and the mass genocide, God-approved.

I have met people on

the Gai'wiio side which is also called the Handsome Lake religion. In the 19th century a man named Jemmy Johnson smuggled his uncle’s ideas about heaven and hell into Iroquois spirituality and although it was originally rejected by the Haudenosaunee today it’s called Longhouse.

They say if you die without an Indian name your spirit floats in oblivion forever because the Creator won't know you.

While the USA still struggles to separate church and state the Gai’wiio adherents at Six Nations seem to be searching for a polity or a state to attach to their Longhouse.

Meanwhile, the great majority (in my opinion) are the Status Quo followers who believe a bit here and there from both previously mentioned camps and are just going with the flow – people trying to survive without causing a great disturbance.

We go to school, work, pay bills, eat bologna sandwiches with mustard and watch the Toronto Maple Leafs not win the Stanley Cup year after year.

Would it be true then to say, Mr. Smith, that at the time of the granting of Letters Patent creating the Colony of Nova Scotia, the source or power granting those letters was the Sovereign of Scotland; where then did the Board of Trade get its authority?

Mr. Smith: At the union of England and Scotland, all Scottish lands were placed with English lands in the Crown in Chancery as possessions of the British people and all Colonies, that is to say, new England and New Scotland, were placed together under this same department.

The Crown in Chancery delegated the administration of and the exercise of authority over the Colonies to the aforesaid Board of Trade and Plantations. At this time the profit from owning Colonies was attained through the Navigation Acts, which were that everything and anything-manufactured articles used in the Colonies, must be imported from Great Britain in British

bottoms by British crews and anything raised in the Colonies must be transshipped to Britain in British bottoms and

by British crews. To make this effective, it was provided that anything exported by the Colonies to any foreign country would be regarded as contraband.

But it should be noted that “the Colonists had all the privileges of Englishmen and were governed by laws of their own making”. It was not until Burke’s Act was enacted in 1782-22 Geo. III Ch. 82, abolishing the authority of the Board of Trade and Plantations and the Governors of the Colonies were told to make their returns to a committee of His Majesty’s Privy Council, that the Colonial Office assumed the administration of affairs and the exercise of authority over all Colonies.

Comparing the sessional papers 18 which were granted by the Board of Trade to Murray in 1763 with the Letters Patent issued to Earl Bessborough March 23rd., 1931 with the instructions issued by His Majesty and also the British North America Act, we find this “mutantis mutandis” the same.

Therefore I think we can agree with the statement of Judge W. H. P. Clement of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, on page 1 of his “Constitution of Canada,” Third Edition, issued in 1916, as follows; “It was no

part of the scheme of Confederation to alter in any essential respect Colonial relationship or to weaken the Crown’s headship; and there is nothing in the (BNA) to indicate a surrender in any degree by the British Parliament of that cardinal principle of the Constitution, the supreme legislative authority of the British Parliament over and through the British Empire. Our colonial position suggests at once two lines of limitation upon Canada’s power of self-government, the first that she cannot legislate as to the Imperial Constitution; and secondly that she has no power to dictate the essential framework of her own as provided in the British North America Act unless indeed that power is conveyed to her by the Act itself”.

It may be said here, in passing, that Judge Clement wrote this fifteen years before the enactment of the Statute of Westminster, for the Statute of Westminster is the only enactment pertaining to Canada which has in any way altered our status since the Sessional papers 18 were granted to James Murray in 1763.

What was the nature of the papers so granted, in brief, and to what extent were the people themselves given the power to make the laws under which they were governed?

Does the British High Commissioner outrank the GG? CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8

Mr. Smith: It is admitted that James Murray was a “corporation sole” in 1763.

It is known by chapter 85 of the Revised Statutes of Canada, 1927, that the office of the governor general is a “corporation sole”.

Would it be true to say that the only charters granted for the government of Canada were these three documents, that is, the Letters Patent of Nova Scotia, the Sessional Papers 18 to Murray, and the Letters Patent granted to Paterson for the Island of St. John which subsequently became Prince Edward Island-that these were the only authority granted up to the British North America Act of 1867?

Mr. Smith: Yes! In explanation I would like to make it clear that no papers of any kind were ever issued to any governor to come to Canada, by the King, the House of Commons, or the House of Lords. The last papers issued to a governor to Canada were those granted at the time of the appointment of Earl Bessborough, march the 23rd., 1931.

These papers were granted by the Crown in Chancery, or Depart-

ment of Lands of Great Britain, giving him the full authority to govern Canada. After the Governor receives his appointment, he is introduced to the King at the Court of St. James, where he is granted a letter of instructions

by His Majesty. But it is not true to state that any Governor of Canada ever was a Viceroy.

Mr. Smith: Lord Tweedsmuir has a commission, signed by R. B. Bennett, which was never Gazetted in the Canada Gazette.

This is the only paper extant in connection with Lord Tweedsmuir’s appointment to Canada.

How was Mr. Bennett appointed?

It will be remembered that when Lord Willingdon finished his term of office as Governor General of Canada and returned to London, he was sent

by George the Fifth as his Viceroy to India and shortly after his arrival he knighted three princes of India “Sir”.

Mr. Smith: It should be understood that Mr. Bennett was made a member of His Majesty’s Imperial Privy Council’ that acting in this capacity he could commission a governor general but he could not grant any papers to him to govern Canada.

Mr. Smith: No governor general since the enactment of the Statute of Westminster has received any papers from the Crown in Chancery of Great Britain to act as Governor General in Canada.

Mr. Smith: He is!

Has any change taken place in the appointment of Governor General since the passing of the Statute of Westminster?

I understand the successor to Bessborough was John Buchan, afterwards Lord Tweedsmuir. How was he appointed?

Is it true that the present governor general of Canada is in exactly the same position in regard to the authority he purports to exercise as Lord Tweedsmuir was?

Who signed the commission for the earl of Athlone?

Mr. Smith: The minister of justice in a letter dated July 10th., 1940, states that his excellency the earl of Athlone came to Canada not in the capacity of Viceroy of His Majesty, except in the popular sense of the term, and----he is not the agent

or representative of His Majesty’s Government in Great Britain or any Department of that Government.

Under what authority does he purport to act?

It is inconceivable to me that a man would purport to exercise the authority of Governor General unless he has some document or title or written authority from some person having the power to give him such authority to act in that capacity. What has the Earl of Athlone?

Mr. Smith: This is a prevalent assumption and one which should be definitely refuted. There is no record anywhere of the Earl of Athlone having received any authorization from the Crown in Chancery to act as Governor General of Canada. It might be opportune to request of the Earl of Athlone a copy of the credentials under which he purports to act before recognizing any Lieutenant Governor which he may appoint for this Province.

Now I would like to explain further that since Canada is no longer under the Department of Lands of Great Britain since the enactment of the Statute of Westminster, that they are not in a position to

grant any powers to anyone to act as the governor general of Canada.

Since that date, the British Government sent to Canada a British High Commissioner, the present incumbent (at time of writing –Ed), the Rt. Hon. Malcolm MacDonald.

Mr. Smith: In explanation I would say that before 1931 we had four British High Commissioners for the empire, one for Palestine, for Singapore, for the Islands of the Pacific and for Basutoland.

There is no higher office within the competency of the Secretary of State of Great Britain to confer higher than that of High Commissioner. These men could order an attack by the British Army or the British Navy within the orbit of their authority (jurisdiction). High Commissioners are sent to Protectorates of the British Empire which are not Colonies. Their powers greatly exceed the powers of Governor General.

It might be interesting, in passing, to comment that if no enactment or order in Council is valid without the assent of some representative of the British Government, the orders in Council passed since the Statute of Westminster should have been assent-

ed to by the British High Commissioner at Earnscliffe instead of being assented to by a purported Governor General at Rideau Hall.

Going to the next phase of the discussion, let us enumerate the various individuals, groups, institutions, or officers under which the Government of Canada is carried on.

Prior to the enactment of the Statute of Westminster, the Government of Canada was composed of a Governor General and a Select Committee of His Majesty’s Imperial Privy Council. Three of this committee are resident in London and administer affairs in connection with foreign relationships.

Two of this committee functioned in the House of Commons, two in the Senate; one headed the Supreme Court of Canada and two other, namely Sir William Thomas White and Dr. T. J. McNamara were available to act as Chairman of any Royal commission.

Next week G. H. Barr learns the difference between the Canadian Privy Council and the Imperial Privy Council for Canada.

Feature: Existence is Resistance

HAMILTON — It was just part of the normal school day for the students in Hamilton Regional Indian Centre’s alternative high school program — making posters and t-shirts with a powerful slogan, “Existence is Resistance”.

The poster design — which can be found in this week’s centre spread poster of the Two Row Times — was a collective work made by the students in the HRIC’s Strengthening Hamilton Aboriginal Education (SHAE) high school program.

SHAE is one of eleven alternative secondary school programs running in Indigenous Friendship Centres throughout Ontario — with the goal of assisting urban indigenous students graduate high school with cultural support and life skills

This week, SHAE brought two indigenous artists into it’s classroom in partnership with

Hamilton’s Centre 3 for print and media arts — a progressive gallery in the city’s James Street North community noted for it’s involvement in leading Hamilton’s Art Crawl

events held throughout the year.

Centre 3’s Artists in the Schools program brought Daniel Hill, an Onondaga visual artist from Six Nations of the

Grand River; and Adam Sturgeon, an Annishnabe musician and artist from Chippewas of the Thames First Nation — into SHAE’s classrooms to lead students through a project that bringing together the programs art and social justice components.

Sturgeon, who is also known as the guitar playing vocalist for the indie psychedelic rock group WHOOP-Szo, led the students through a screen-printing workshop.

Students were introduced to how they can take everyday materials, like a few milk cartons and a strong light bulb, to make an at-home rig to start making their own screen printed posters and t-shirts to make a statement of their own.

SHAE students created a collective work, inspired by the work of Shelly Niro’s “The Shirt”.

Hill explained that as part of the students social jus-

tice lessons - they were inspired by Niro’s work to produce a piece of art that conveyed a message.

In the short film attached to the Niro’s “The Shirt”, indigenous women are shown wearing shirts captioned “My ancestors were annihilated, exterminated, murdered and massacred…and all I got is this shirt.”

Hill said the students were impacted by Niro’s work and wanted to bring that kind of messaging to the collective piece and so the birth of their message - “Existence is Resistance” - was born.

Centre 3’s Outreach Director Becky Katz said she has been a fan of Niro’s influential works and said she was impressed with the work that came from the partnership with the SHAE program students.

Contemporary prom gives rise to contemporary dresses

The ingenuity of an Indigenous clothing designer caught the eye of young Indigenous ladies preparing for prom, who later chose to “indigenize” their prom gown selection with her work. Their choices have since gone viral.

Spray tan, hair spray, rhinestones, nail and hair appointments — the excitement of prom season is in full swing as students take to signing off the last of their high school years with formal fun.

And it isn’t hard to figure out prom’s origin; #prahm, short for promenade, came about to promote social etiquette and manners in each year’s graduating class. The tradition itself is older than sliced bread, literally, but a contemporary idea that might become the next tradition for indigenous high school students has emerged.

Indigenous students in the USA turned prom into a platform to make a statement about indigenous representation as well as to support indigenous designers.

Designs by Della which is a label created by Della Bighair Stump was commended in a tweet from Sioux Writer Ruth H. Hopkins who showed pictures of her custom-made gowns on April 22, and caught viral media attention.

Growing up in a family that made their own traditional regalia, Bighair Stump, who is an enrolled member of the Crow from Montana, is also an entirely self-taught designer and sewer. Her work comes from the teachings of her family members and her designs come specifically from her own people — she describes her work as bringing “two worlds together.”

“I always wanted to wear clothes that represented me and where I come from,” said Bighair Stump. “I'm Crow and our style of designs are unique and colourful. I brought two worlds together and made one.”

ing and making clothes since 2015 with her label, and although she can do her own bead work, she collaborates with local beaders in her area and her own family members.

While describing her process of creating a dress, she gave an understanding as to why her creations are so eye-catching and colourful.

“First I decide on style of dress, be it mermaid, cocktail, ballgown, etcetera. Then I decide on the colour of the dress, I love colour and I always want to make something unique,” she said. “Then I decide on a Crow design to incorporate with the style of dress and choose where to put the designs on the dress. I then decide colours to use in the design. That's the hard part.”

“I try to only use up to six colours for a Crow design. Once I finish with the design I then sew everything together.”

She explained that it can take from one to two weeks for a dress to be completed depending on the style, and it can take up to a month or two for dresses with beadwork.

In regards to the young ladies that chose to wear her work to prom, Bighair Stump said that she feels “honoured.”

“I'm very honoured that these young, beautiful ladies wanted to wear my creations to their special event,” she said. “I didn't expect it to go viral. I'm just doing what I love and sharing my blessings with others.”

In the near future, some of her work will also be showcased through a vendor booth at the Indigenous Fashion Gala in Edmonton, Alberta in September.

Casting call for new film project hits Six Nations

SIX NATIONS — Yet another project abundant with opportunities reaches the Six Nations community: the soon to be filmed Brother, I Cry reached out to the community in search of Haudenosaunee actors and actresses for a casting call on Saturday, May 5, held at the Dajoh Youth and Elders Building.

Filmmaker Jessie Anthony, who is of the Onondaga Nation and Beaver Clan from Six Nations, explained that the project will hopefully help to add to the collective work of Indigenous film.

“As a filmmaker who is from Six Nations, really it is very important that I bring new Indigenous talent to the screen, especially Onkwehonwe from Six Nations,” said Anthony.

“I came home to visit, and while I was here I thought I would see if I would have

any interest in auditions – and we did!”

The audition itself saw 23 talented individuals of all ages interested in a role in the film. Producers will continue to accept taped auditions for another week until Tuesday, May 15.

TORONTO — The SOCAN Foundation announced one of its newest awards in late March of this year; The TD Indigenous Songwriter Award which will provide $10,000 to an indigenous songwriter as well as a trip to the Indigenous Music Awards In Winnipeg for the award ceremony on May 18.

“The SOCAN Foundation has been fostering Canadian music since 1992, but we wanted to take it to the next level to recognize Indigenous songwriters across the country," said Charlie Wall-Andrews, the executive director of the SOCAN Foundation.

She said that the award itself had been in development for over a year, and that the winner will be selected by a jury of prominent Indigenous songwriters.

"It is designed to have a great impact on the artist's career," said Wall-An-

“The Indigenous Songwriter Award builds on the SOCAN Foundation and the efforts of TD to foster, promote and diversify opportunities for music creators of Indigenous descent,” said Wall-Andrews.

“Our ongoing aim is to build inclusive grant and awards programming that is as diverse as the communities in which we live, and this new award pushes us even further ahead.”

In a press release, Jacquie Black, manager of the Indigenous Music Awards, said that the SOCAN Foundation is dedicated to fostering the development of songwriters.

"This award gives even more recognition to the outstanding Indigenous talent currently honouring traditions and storytelling through music," she said in the release.

The deadline closed on April 25 and the very first winner of this inaugural award will be chosen and honoured in less than two weeks.

Anthony explained that the story told through the film itself is a glimpse into the modern lifestyle of two siblings dealing with inter-generational residential school trauma whilst trying to maintain their connections to spirit

“The characters are real and raw, and they are a mixture of many different stories and characteristics of people loving and living with an addict,” she said.

This makes the film one that may be used in the future to help educate viewers on the residential school impact. The project will produce a Telefilm micro-budget funded feature film, and the concept was selected out of nine projects to come to fruition.

“Brother, I Cry is written and directed by myself,” Anthony said. “This project started a few years back in my last year of the Indigenous independent digital filmmaking program at Capilano University in B.C. I went further by submitting a feature film treatment to Telefilm Canada, and we were one of two projects chosen out of nine submissions across Canada.”

As an actress herself, Anthony extended some

words of wisdom to those looking to audition or get involved with the process: “Read the casting call thoroughly and email the email or contact provided for more information. The casting directors are very helpful and will make sure you have everything you need,” she said.

“If you have an audition time set up, make sure you read through your sides provided, arrive at the audition and introduce yourself, step into the room and have fun! I never look at an audition for a trial run; I treat it like the actual performance.”

Anthony also thanked all involved in the auditions and in supporting the project.

The final project will be screened on Six Nations some time in 2019, and the project can be followed on Instagram @ brothericryfilm.

Hollywood has again entered the Indigenous platform with a new project on the legendary athlete Jim Thorpe, which has been titled after his traditional name Wo-Tho-Huk, which means “bright path.”

Well-known humanitarian and actress Angelina Jolie will produce Bright Path: The Jim Thorpe Story, and Martin Sensmeier from Wind River, who is of Tlingit, Koyukon-Athabascan decent, is set to star as Thorpe.

“I have had the privilege of spending time with Bill Thorpe, and will be listening to and guided by the Tribes and the Thorpe family in the making of this film,” said Jolie.

The upcoming film is being viewed as an opportunity for correct Indigenous input in Hollywood.

Sterlin Harjo, who is of the Seminole Nation with Muskogee heritage, wrote the original screenplay.

"It's not up to Hollywood to change Native representation in the media,” Harjo wrote on his website. “They have failed at it for decades – it’s up to us.”

And the pride in the accomplishments of the phenomenal athlete still rings true in his descendants.

“Our father’s accomplishments in life are a great source of pride to us,” said Bill Thorpe. “Our family has heard of dozens of attempts to bring this story to modern audiences, but we have never shared the vision of a movie until the authentic portrayal in Bright Path.”

The portrayal of the Sac and Fox Nation athlete is hoped to be both an authentic addition to all biopic films and an accurate capture of his athleticism.

SIX NATIONS — Usually by mid-April, lacrosse fans start to feel the seasonal itch to watch something exciting and this season the SN Rebels came to deliver as they now sit at the top in league standings.

With eight games and eight wins and the Rebels being a team full of younger legs, the scoreboards are showing that they’re giving teams loaded with veterans a hard run for their money.

The team matched up with the Niagara Thunderhawks last Friday at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena and the match up gave spectators a good show.

An impressive first period went to the Thunderhawks as they got their mark on the board with a goal 3 minutes in and another only a minute later after sending some of their opponents to the box. This seemed to rattle the Rebels until their focus turned to returning the goals, and Garrett Vyse-Skye scored with assists from Daylen Hill and Gates Abrams.

But, the Thunderhawks were putting up a fight and returned another one, and then another. This left the Rebels with a two point deficit and their focus quickly turned to their defence.

With younger and faster players, they used a strong man-on-man set up and kept the Thunderhawks to the outside. This forced a lot of outside shots that Niagara simply couldn’t score from.

“It really is a big disappointment, said general manager Brian Rizzetto.

“We went up against a

team that was prepared to play us. We were outplayed and our big guys weren’t big. But we were bad from the net out. No excuses.”

Last year it was the Elmira Sugar Kings that shocked the Corvairs in the OHA Semi-finals where they lost 4-2. The kings went on to win the 2017 Sutherland Cup, taking out the London Nationals four games to one. This year the Corvairs were eliminated in four straight against the Listowel Cyclones.

“I think everyone in the organization needs to take a look in the mirror,” says

Rizzetto.

“That’s including myself and Bully (coach Mike Bullard), see where it went wrong and correct it for next season.”

There has been no decisions made to date regarding any changes there may be within the team for next year.

The message was simple going into who would prove to be the Pro-Fit Corvairs’ swan song at the Steve Kerr Memorial Arena. Nothing short of a win would be acceptable.

General Manager Brian Rizzetto and coach Mike Bullard were on the same page when it comes to

explaining what went so suddenly wrong. “We need everybody working,” said Bullards before they got on the bus to Listowel. “They (Listowel) are a good team. We need everybody tonight. There is no tomorrow.”

He was right. If there was any chance of a huge series comeback, they would have to win four in a row starting with Tuesday night.

As shown all year, there was no shortage of talent with this team. The team’s individual and season statistics are very impressive indeed.

So what went wrong?

Perhaps it was their success that eventually failed them. After winning four-straight in the first round, there was a fiveday wait for the winner of the Thorold/Niagara Falls series which ended Mar. 7th and didn’t start against the Canucks until March 14th.

Round 2 ended March 21st after taking out the Canucks four games to one, but the St. Catharines Falcons were having a much harder time with the Hamilton Kilty Bee’s who took the series a full seven games before the Falcons eventually won 4-3. Mar. 26th.

Knighthawks headed to East Division finals

The Corvairs ripped through the Falcons in four straight and then had to wait again until April 11th for the Elmira Sugar Kings.

The wildcard Elmira series ended in four straight on April 17th.

They would then have to wait again until April 25th. For the Sutherland Cup series to begin and all that momentum built up to that point was expended, waiting for opponents.

Or maybe they just lost interest.

That’s what makes sports great. Anything can, and usually does happen.

ROCHESTER — The Rochester Knighthawks return to the postseason was a successful one, as they defeated the New England Black Wolves 15-11 Friday night in the East Division semifinals.

Rochester, who was playing in its first postseason game since 2015, was led by several players who were making their professional playoff debuts. Kyle Jackson registered a threepoint night (2+1), while Austin Shanks scored three of Rochester’s first four goals as part of a four-goal performance.

“It was awesome. It takes the monkey off our back,” said Shanks. “They swept us during the regular season, so it was nice to come out here in the playoffs, when it matters, and take that ‘W.’” Despite the heroics of Shanks, it was Brad Gillies who stole the spotlight on Friday, posting his first pro hat trick in his postseason debut. Knighthawks head coach Mike Hasen was very pleased with his team’s ability to close out the game.

“It’s been a process all year long for us,” he said.

“We took a deep breath in the fourth quarter and started playing smart lacrosse.”

Rochester will continue its quest for a sixth championship when it travels to play the Georgia Swarm in the East Division Finals on Saturday, May 12 at 7:05 p.m.

Out West, Calgary will take on Saskatchewan May 13th. The winners meet for the new NLL Championship Cup starting the following weekend in a new best-of-three series format.

WILMOTT — A horrific start to Saturday’s Jr. C lacrosse matchup between the Brantford Warriors and the Wilmott Wild, in Wilmott, dug a 6-0 pit that Brantford couldn't escape from, despite a valiant third period effort. In the end, the first place Wild won it 10-7, for its third win of the young season against no losses. Brant-

ford is now sitting with one win and two losses.

The first period was hard to watch, that is, is if you’re a Brantford fan, as Wilmott went wild with six first period goals, then added two more in the second, 30 seconds apart before Connor Merritt connected for Brantford from Thomas Richards and Ryan Dorr.

Max Lewis scored a minute later to take a twogoal slice off the Wilmott lead before the period ended with Wilmott lead-

ing 8-2.

The Warriors came out with guns blazing with Jaden Drage scoring three third period goals, and second goals of the game were scored by Dorr and Merritt. But the rally fell short as Wilmott recorded the 10-7 win. Bobby Morrison was tagged with the loss in the Brantford goal.

Last Friday, Brantford won 10-2 over Halton Hills. They will be off until Tuesday, May 15th when the travel to Fergus to face the Thistles.

Researchers urged to consult Indigenous communities, do no harm North American scientists reminded to be respectful when testing ancestral human remains

A new article in the journal Science provides guidance for those intending to study ancient human remains in the Americas.

The paper, written by Indigenous scholars and scientists and those who collaborate with Indigenous communities on studies of ancient DNA, offers a clear directive to others contemplating such research: First, do no harm.

Scientists studying ancestral remains have similar obligations to those that bind researchers working with living human subjects, the authors wrote. The descendants or people affiliated with

those who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago deserve to be consulted before their ancestors are disturbed. Even in cases where the remains were collected long ago and moved far from their original burial place, and even when the surviving lineages are in doubt, scientists ought to consult Indigenous groups living on the land or claiming ancestral ties to the region where the ancestors were found, the authors said.

"Right now, there are inconsistent or no regulations for working with ancient ancestors," said University of Illinois anthropology professor Ripan Malhi, a co-author of the report. "And there are no requirements for working with descendant or affiliated communities,

even though new scientific findings relating to their ancestors can have serious implications for them."

Malhi partners with Indigenous communities to study ancient DNA from individuals found on lands their descendants still live on.

Malhi, along with Indigenous scientists, scholars and other scientists who work with Native American and First Nations communities, worked to create the Summer internship for Indigenous Peoples in Genomics, which trains Indigenous scientists in genomics techniques and explores ethical concerns.

Not consulting Indigenous communities before analyzing ancient DNA potentially harms those

groups, said Alyssa Bader, a co-author and graduate student at the University of Illinois.

"Genetic analyses can reveal information not just about the ancestors, but also their descendants. If genetic variants associated with specific diseases are identified in ancestors, for example, this can influence how we think about disease susceptibility in the descendant community – and that community could be stigmatized," she said.

New findings also may interfere with ongoing treaty negotiations, she said.

"For Indigenous communities involved in negotiating land claims or repatriation, new genetic findings could either bolster or complicate those

claims," she said.

Studying ancient DNA without consulting descendant communities is also a missed opportunity, said Concordia University professor Jessica Bardill, the lead author of the article.

"The engagements we highlight show that collaboration with communities not only strengthens the analysis but also can allow for better questions to be asked in the research, informed by community narratives about the ancestors, their lands and their relationships," she said.

For these and other ethical and practical reasons, Malhi said, it's in a scientist's interest to identify and locate potentially affected groups, consult with them about

the research and invite them to join the effort, thereby improving the scientist's understanding of the context in which the ancient peoples lived.

It also allows Indigenous communities to guide the science and ask research questions that are of interest to them.

"Engaging communities at the outset is critical for understanding their concerns or questions about research involving ancient relatives. Without feedback from the community, scientific interpretations remain one-sided and inherently biased," said Nanibaa' Garrison, a bioethics professor at Seattle Children's Research Institute and the University of Washington School of Medicine, and a co-author of the article.

500-year-old skeletons headed for Native American tribes

BOISE, ID — Two 500-year-old skeletons discovered in Idaho's high desert plains will be turned over to Native American tribes.

U.S. officials in a series of notices starting Friday say the remains of the young adult and child will be given to the interrelated Shoshone-Bannock Tribes in eastern Idaho and the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes in southern Idaho and northern Nevada.

The notices start a process allowing other tribes to make claims until June 28. The remains, currently being held in a secured federal facility in Boise,

will be transferred to the selected tribes if no other tribes come forward. ``We've always pointed out that we've been here for thousands of years,'' Shoshone-Paiute Tribes Chairman Ted Howard said in an interview before U.S. officials announced his tribe would receive the remains. ``For our tribe and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, those are the remains of our people, our ancestors. That's how we feel.''

Other tribes that expressed an interest in the remains were northern Idaho's Nez Perce Tribe, the Burns Paiute Tribe of eastern Oregon, the Confederated Tribes of the Warms Springs Reservation in central Oregon, and the Fort McDermitt Paiute

and Shoshone Tribes of the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation in Nevada and Oregon.

Those tribes didn't respond to inquiries from The Associated Press.

U.S. officials said those tribes deferred to the tribes selected to receive the remains but declined to elaborate, citing the confidentiality of the government-to-government communications. ``We recognize that this is a sensitive situation for them,'' said Amanda Hoffman, manager of the 760-square-mile (1,970-square-kilometre) Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area. The remains were found on the conservation area, which contains several

notable Native American rock art sites dating back centuries.

The skeletons were discovered in dry sagebrush steppe in April 2017, by an Idaho Department of Fish and Game worker checking ground squirrel hunters' licenses about 5 miles (8 kilometres) from the small city of Mountain Home. A badger digging into the squirrels' burrows apparently exposed some bones.

The bones were in such good condition that Idaho authorities initially treated the southwestern Snake River Plain site as a possible crime scene.

Authorities said they were either dealing with a double homicide that had happened in recent decades, bones from

pioneers who died in the 19th century while travelling along the nearby Oregon Trail or the remains of Native Americans from that era or earlier.

Five days after the initial discovery, law enforcement officials as well as archaeologists returned and did a more thorough examination and discovered additional remains.

Officials said they found no cultural items to indicate the remains belonged to Native Americans.

But carbon dating tests from a lab in Florida found the young adult and the child or teen lived sometime during the 1400s to 1600s. Elmore County investigators were so surprised that they sent bone samples to be checked at another lab in

Arizona, which returned similar results.

U.S. officials in the public notices give the approximate range of the remains from 1436 to 1522 and said that's based on overlapping dates from the two sets of remains.

Testing on the remains stopped after their age became known. The cause of death isn't known.

Following the carbon dating, the U.S Bureau of Land Management took possession of the remains and began a process spelled out in the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act to return the remains to a tribe.

That is expected to occur sometime this summer if no other tribes object.

On Feb. 21, LeBlanc said Five Nations had won a competition for the licence because the company met criteria that called for an Indigenous entity located in the Atlantic region with majority

The Miawpukek First Nation in Newfoundland and Labrador has since filed an application with the Federal Court seeking a judicial review of LeBlanc’s decision, saying it was unreasonable because Five Nations had only one Indigenous group as a partner when the licence was awarded.

On Monday, published reports said the federal Conservatives have asked Canada’s ethics watchdog to investigate the decision, saying concerns have been raised about possible connections between LeBlanc, Five Nations and its industry partner, CapeBreton-based Premium Seafoods.

The treaty updates an agreement reached in 2006, which the community voted against ratifying a year later.

The previous treaty offered a capital transfer of about $16 million.

About 500 members of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation are eligible to vote on the treaty next month.

If they ratify the agreement, it will be approved first by B.C.'s government, then the federal government.

Ed was fortunate to call Joyce Porter, Donna Hill and the (late) Marjorie Hill, MA. He will be dearly missed by his Moms. Ed Jr., Peter, Mitch, Becky, Jenelle and Darryl thank you all for the love you gave us, during the loss of your father, as you were all hurting too. We want to acknowledge our extended family siblings, in laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins for their hospital visits and overnight stays with Ed. All your help and donations were immeasurable. To all his garage brothers and sisters who fundraised with a Xmas basket draw and fish fry. Special thanks to Sandy Porter Jr. and Matt Nadijwon for donating the fish. Miles to go Cancer for the monetary donation. Thanks to everyone for the food, monetary donations, sympathy cards and condolences. All the visits and phone calls we received helped us get through the day. There were so many people that helped in our time of need, we were overwhelmed and grateful.
