Crash claims life of Brantford man STAFF REPORT

BRANTFORD — A 23-year-old Brantford man has died in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning.

Brantford Police, fire and paramedics were dispatched to Spalding Drive at Ballantyne Drive at about 3 a.m. on Saturday morning and found two male occupants in

the vehicle.

Police say an adult male passenger was treated at Brantford General Hospital for minor injuries, and later released.

The other male, 23 year old Dakota Liam Miller of Brantford succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are asking anyone who may have information to assist with the investigation, to contact them.

Fatal crash on Highway 54 STAFF REPORT

CALEDONIA — Police say one person has died after a two-vehicle crash in Caledonia on Monday afternoon.

The crash took place on Highway 54, around 2:30 p.m., when an SUV that was turning was hit by a black pickup truck.

Police say a person in

one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased male has been identified as 59-year-old Phillip Owen of Burlington, Ontario.

Three people in the second vehicle, including an infant, were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.

Ex-Anglican priest David Norton found guilty in second case of sex abuse of indigenous boys STAFF REPORT

LONDON — A former Anglican priest who served the Chippewas of the Thames and Oneida Nation of the Thames communities in the 1990s was found guilty on all counts in the sex abuse of four boys.

David Norton, 72, was facing four counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault.

The victims testified earlier this month to the methodical sexual grooming and horrific sexual abuse they suffered at the hands of Norton when they were children.

himself by claiming the physical contact he had with the children when they were under his care was limited to hugs.

A London judge acquitted Norton of one count of indecent assault but

guilty of sexual assault for the same victim. On the other three charges of indecent assault against the other three victims — the judge said Norton was guilty of all charges and said Nor-

ton’s defence evidence did not “ring true”.

Norton is already in custody, serving four years for sexual interference in the abuse of another boy from the communities.

In a statement from the Anglican Diocese of Huron in February 2018 following Norton’s scandal and charges coming into the public — church officials said, “We are grieved by his actions and the harm that has been caused to the victim and his family and continue to pray for healing.”

The Diocese confirmed Norton resigned from his ministry on May 2, 2016.

Sentencing for Norton in the new conviction is set for January 25, 2019.

Woman arrested, charged with Accessory after the fact in triple homicide

By TRT Staff SIX NATIONS - OPP confirmed they have made one arrest in connection to the ongoing triple homicide investigation at Six Nations.

On Friday, November 23, 2018 members of the Ontario Provincial Police under the direction of Detective Inspector Pete Liptrott of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch with the assistance of the Six Nations Police Service, arrested Kirsten Bomberry, 36-years-old of Six Nations of the Grand River.

Bomberry is charged with 3 counts of Accessory After the Fact to Murder.

Police say Bomberry was held for a show cause hearing on November 24, 2018 where she was remanded into custody. A future court

appearance at a London court. Police say a publication ban for that proceeding is now in effect.

Kirsten Bomberry was previously convicted of second degree murder in the 2004 stabbing death of a 25 year old man in Hamilton. That was appealed after courts decided her trial judge erred in advising the jury on how to handle evidence. During a second trial Bomberry pled guilty to manslaughter. Bomberry admitted to stabbing 25 year old Emil Uiuiu, a Romanian immigrant, in the chest with a knife during an altercation between the pair while Bomberry, then 21, was a sex trade worker in Hamilton.

say the loss of the unborn child does not account for a fourth murder charge but would be considered an aggravating factor that would play into trial and sentencing of the accused killer or killers.

Periodic road closures were in effect throughout the weekend on Fourth Line and Tuscarora Road through to the corner of Fourth Line and Onondaga Road. An increased police presence was seen in the community and several OPP Forensic identification vehicles were spotted by residents at the scene and elsewhere on the territory Saturday morning.

Speculation that the deaths of the three victims may be connected to the 2017 murder of Douglas James Hill have also not been confirmed by OPP. The remains of Miller, Porter and Jamieson were located just a short distance from where Hill’s decomposed remains were recovered in 2017.

There were four people charged and arrested in relation to Hill’s death. In July 2017 a 17 year old female was charged with second degree murder in the case.

Police then arrested three others: Holly Martin, 36; Lori-Anne Staats, 25; and Nicholas Shipman, 34.

All three were charged with Accessory to Murder after the fact. All four accused in relation to Hill’s death saw all charges dropped in October 2018 — courts citing insufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

One of those accused, Nicholas Shipman, was arrested on November 3, 2018 on an unrelated vehicle theft in Brant County. According to police, Shipman appeared in court to answer to those charges at the beginning of November and was taken into custody.

Court dockets showed Shipman was scheduled again in Brantford court on November 27 for an additional show cause hearing.

Court officials told TRT Shipman was facing three new charges: theft of a vehicle, driving while restricted and failure to comply to a restriction. Court workers told TRT Shipman was denied bail.

SN Fire Station 3 closed indefinitely STAFF REPORT

The Six Nations Fire Chief posted to Facebook in the evening on Tuesday, November 27, announcing that the SN Fire Station #3 will be closed indefinitely after an elaborate break-in occurred at the station.

He relayed that thieves cut through the security fence, broke through a double cinderblock concrete wall at the back of the station and proceeded to steal the equipment from two fire trucks and significantly damaged the trucks in the

process of trying to stealing them.

Early estimates for the damage and theft are $200,000 or more and the Chief explained that until the station and trucks are repaired and the highly specialized equipment replaced, the station is unable to be open.

Due to the stations closure, there will now be a delay in emergency response time to the Fire Station 3 area.

The Department urges anyone that has seen or heard anything to notify the Six Nations Police at 519445-2811.

OSHAWA — Monday, the rumours became fact at the official announcement that General Motors is closing five plants in 2019 as part of plans to cut $4.5 billion in costs and lower capital expenditures by $1.5 billion by 2020, the automaker said Monday. The closures will affect assembly-line workers at its Oshawa plant, along with those in Detroit, Warren Ohio, propulsion plants in White Marsh, Maryland, and Warren Michigan.

Two international plants are also closing. Even the

The sudden move has hit thousands of GM workers on both sides of the boarder.

Six Nations Right to Hunt group says protestor barricade violates Indigenous rights

We Salute You Eight out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within the first 18 months, according to Bloomberg. That means a whopping 80% of businesses crash and burn and only one third of the number of businesses there are now will make it to year 10.

We at Two Row Times are on our fifth year.

This means that even though we are still standing, we have gone through trials and tribulations, highs and lows in the same way that other businesses do each year. There is a possibility that our business could crumble and we recognize it.

There is the responsibility to deliver real value, to connect with the target audience, to be authentic and transparent, strategic and efficient leaders, to communicate properly and more. Lacking these qualities can subjugate a business and bring it to its knees faster than 18 months.

So we know the odds are against us, but if we take too long to admire the statistics we’ll become them. So everyday, we get into the trenches and inch forward.

Why? Because of our readership.

The community the Two Row Times makes home in is what has kept us going — like coals to an engine.

The ads, the stories, the news and more come from our community and elsewhere and help to shape the paper.

The basic necessities of a newspaper are to inform, interpret the news, entertain, move readers and provide a service of information and these are each qualities we aim to have. Newspapers are designed to help readers become informed citizens through fact and that is the main goal of ours.

As an indigenous based news outlet we want nothing more than for our readership to be educated in as many aspects of Indian Country as possible. But we aren’t always perfect.

What pains the most though, isn’t the mistakes, but the act of having to portray the ugly within our community at times. Often we get to show the heart warming parts, but in contrast we have to balance and show the heart wrenching ones too.

So again, those that make the paper possible are appreciated to the highest degree, but so are our readers. Because it is our readership that ultimately shapes the paper.

And even if you just pick us up to check out your horoscope, we salute you.

Dear Editor, After successfully surpassing the goal of 1,500 online signatures, the Supporters of Haudenosaunee Right to Hunt delivered their signed petition to the Regional Municipality of Niagara Police Services Board on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at the police headquarters on 5700 Valley Way, Niagara Falls Ontario.

The petition calls on the police to no longer allow the barricade at Short Hills Provincial Park and to move the anti-hunt protesters to the side of the road. This solution preserves the protester's right to be seen and heard while not violating the Treaties, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Constitution of Canada, and as well as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The petition can be found at https://www.change.org/p/ honour-the-treaties-stop-the-barricade-at-short-hills and continues to gather signatures.

This 2018 harvest season saw the Niagara Regional Police Service finally remove the anti-hunt

protesters from their barricade in the morning, allowing Haudenosaunee harvesters direct entry into the park. However, the police still allow an anti-hunt barricade stalling hunters as they try to leave the park at the end of the day.

The petition calls on the police to remove anti-hunt protesters at all times from the barricade, as any form of stall is an interference with Indigenous rights.

Chester Gibson of the Haudenosaunee Wildlife and Habitat Authority said that “Finally after five years at the Short Hills, our harvesters are being allowed direct access to the park. But we shouldn't be held up by the protesters on our way out. We have a right to be here and we have a right to leave the park without being stalled by protesters."

Jamie McGean, Kanien'kehá:ka Nation, Haudenosaunee, member of the Supporters of Haudenosaunee Right to Hunt, explained “The Niagara Regional Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police are supposed to enforce the law, not be

complicit in the illegal barricade.

The barricade stalls harvesters as they leave the Short Hills which violates their Indigenous rights.

The police have a legal obligation to protect our Inherent and Treaty rights.”

Supporters of Haudenosaunee Right to Hunt was founded in 2014 and supports Indigenous Inherent and Treaty Rights. They have organized educational workshops to increase awareness in Niagara of these issues. A full schedule is available at https://sixnationsrighttohunt.com/workshops-events/.

The Haudenosaunee Wildlife and Habitat Authority, which organizes the harvest, is a department tasked by the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council with the management of wildlife resources. This year is the fifth year of Haudenosaunee harvesting white-tailed deer at Short Hills Provincial Park.

Editor, National Addictions Awareness Week is the time for us to focus on creating the necessary space for reconciliation and healing in First Nations communities, where addictions and the use of opioids has long been in crisis proportions.

First Nations are a resilient people, having long lived and battled the affects of colonization, residential schools and the intergenerational trauma that comes with surviving these impacts. We have been able to do this due to the fact that many communities and individuals are going back to the land, where they can find the healing that is needed in ceremonies and the medicines. It is our time to thrive and not just survive.

We need to heal the effects of colonization and the damage done by intergenerational trauma in order to combat and heal from addiction.

It’s time to break the cycle.

In order to properly prevent and address this tragic and ongoing addictions issue, First Nations need the resources to take control and develop services that are First Nation driven; to build capacity and the opportunity to generate effective planning, supports and research that is relevant and appropriate to the needs of First Nations.

We are prepared to face these issues with the determination and strength to make real and lasting change, as the impact of addictions affects every individual’s families

and communities. We have processes in place through our Trilateral Mental Health and Addictions Working Group and other initiatives supporting community-lead land-based healing, awareness and prevention activities, as well as research mandates to address the issues and solutions. Ongoing support for these is critical as we move forward.

This is an opportunity to focus our thoughts on prevention, and talking about healing, treatment and recovery, and lasting solutions for change with our communities and leadership.”

Building the soil and standing strong

By Paula Hill Contributing Writer I was outraged when I read “Peter Khill found not guilty of murder.” I raged inside and it gushed out of me like lava flow. I yelled at the white woman who tried to help me with my computer. I barked at my boss and then apologized.

I drove like a maniac. I was mad at myself. I was mad at the world.

I’ve worked in the justice system. I know what goes on in those courthouses. I knew there would be no justice for the murder victim, Jon Styres and his family… but it still hurt like hell.

In the media, on Twitter, on Facebook, I saw the pictures — the anguish in the faces of Jon’s family.

Those pictures burned a hole in my spirit. I know those people. They’ve seen my children grow. They’ve laughed and cried with me over the years. “They’re good people, they deserve better. They don’t deserve any of this.” That truth tore my heart apart, it took my breath away and pushed uncontrollable tears down my face.

I had a trip planned to Quebec for the Canada Day long weekend, just a few days later. My children and I were going to an organic farm and I hoped to write a blog about the trip. I had

to go. So we packed our bags and early Saturday we drove to Kanesatake, Quebec.

When we arrived in Oka, I accidentally went to the wrong farmhouse. When I realized my error I pushed my children back into the car and peeled out of there, scared we would be shot.

I remember the Staats boy (my neighbour) who was murdered this way when I was young. It’s a fear I’ve carried ever since. Colton Boushie, Tina Fontaine, Cindy Gladue — all names that were running through my mind. All victims of murder. All their murderers walk free, not so much as a blemish on their criminal records after they killed a human being, the concept of “human being” apparently lost on the juries.

As we drove through Oka and then to Kanesatake, I saw the magnificent white pine trees and I recognized them from the news coverage of the Oka Crisis in 1990. I thought it was funny that I recognized those trees. I marvelled at my memory and my children asked me, “What is Oka?” I was shocked at the question. Had I never told them about Oka before?

I told my children of the awakening that Canada had that summer of 1990, when the Mohawks of

Kanesatake had a shoot out with the Sûreté du Quebec, and then the infamous Mohawk Warriors standing toe to toe with the Canadian Army.

I proudly remembered how our people came together from all over Turtle Island to support them. I was filled with pride as I told them the story. Those are our people. As painful as that summer was to witness, it still left a feeling of pride that our people stood up for those trees, and protected the graves of their ancestors buried there.

We found Chuck Barnett’s organic garlic and tree farm, thanks to the hospitality of a Kanesatake store owner and with a little guidance from two young Mohawks on a dirt bike. We had a great day learning from Chuck and his beautiful partner Valerie Gabriel.

Valerie proudly showed us her organic garlic, the squash she grows from her 800-year-old seeds, and Chuck guided us through the processes he uses to nurture and grow a variety of trees native to the area.

Chuck proudly told us that Valerie had built the farm’s irrigation system herself.

Valerie described her delight in seeing milkweed growing naturally in the field.

Chuck has a process for

making soil and he let us be a part of it. Our afternoon was spent putting white pines in the soil we made from leaves, bits of bark and transplanted soil from the forest. It felt so good to smell that soil, to help nurture the lives of those baby trees, and to listen to Chuck and Valerie’s stories. Chuck described the loving way that trees ensure the viability of their seeds by covering them with their leaves to keep them warm over the winter. I marvelled at how brilliant and nurturing the trees are.

For some reason, I was nervous planting those trees, convinced I would do something wrong.

Chuck gently commented on my nervousness. The next tree I planted, I did it with a little more confidence. I was covered in dirt and water. I was happy we made the six-hour drive to Kanesatake.

Over lunch we heard Chuck and Valerie’s love story, of how Chuck knew that Valerie was “the one.”

My heart felt rejuvenated and uplifted by this opportunity to interact with Mother Earth and to learn from Chuck Barnett and Valerie Gabriel at Kanesatake, to be reminded of the power of my people, our teachings and the power of Mother Earth. I realized the sadness I had driven

there with had dissipated. I was gently reminded of the healing benefits of engaging with Mother Earth.

Chuck told us that at one point Kanesatake had serious soil erosion troubles, so the men had planted the white pines to protect against further erosion. As we drove out of the community, I admired the majestic beauty and spiritual strength of those huge trees. They stand tall and proud, looking over the people.

To the Haudenosaunee, white pines symbolize our agreement to bury our weapons. The eagle rests atop those trees. These things all protect us. We know that we are backed by our ancestors and Creator.

When I returned to Ontario, I read of the success of the Canada Day assembly organized on Queen’s Park by the women of Six Nations. They called for changes to be made to the justice system. They stood on their knees with their hands in the air, highlighting Jonathan Styres’s fragility as he was shot in the back and chest, his life taken and the killer allowed to walk free. They chanted in protest as Doug Ford arrived on stage to give a Canada Day speech.

Doug Ford left the stage within seconds.

As heartbreaking as

the circumstances were that led to that Canada Day assembly, it reminded me that I am here for a reason; I have lots of work to do. We all do. We have to help Canadians see the injustices when murder is permitted because a life is not valued. Honouring our ancestors, continuing to seek justice even against what seems insurmountable and protecting lives — including the lives of those who seem not to matter – whether it’s Indigenous lives or the lives of the trees or the bees or orcas or whatever — that’s worth fighting for.

First Nations summit in Halifax focuses on self government, self determination HALIFAX – First Nations leaders from across Canada are gathering in Halifax today for a regional summit on self-governance, with a focus on finding a pathway to nationhood for Indigenous Peoples in the Atlantic region known as Mi'kma'ki.

In a keynote address to hundreds of delegates, Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde said an overriding goal for First Nations is to exercise the right to self-determination.

He says it's time to move beyond the Indian Act and

recognize treaties _ intended to jointly benefit both settlers and Indigenous Peoples through shared land and resources.

Bellegarde says First Nations sovereignty will help address a yawning gap between the quality of life of First Nations compared to the rest of Canada.

Regional Chief Morley Googoo says First Nations never gave up the ability to govern themselves, and that the federal government is continuing to fail Indigenous communities.

He says the inaugural

summit is an opportunity to examine different approaches to self-government taken in other areas, and the lessons learned. ``We need to improve the quality of life of our people, and get rid of the stigma that we're getting so much money and just a taxpayer burden,'' he says. ``It's crucial we work together as communities.''

The three-day summit at the Halifax Convention Centre features First Nations speakers from across the country, as well as a trade show with local Indigenous artisans.

Alberta First Nation issues alert following dozens of drug overdoses STAND OFF, Alta. – An Indigenous community in southeastern Alberta has issued a community alert following dozens of suspected opioid overdoses, including one death.

The Blood Tribe Police Service says it responded to 22 overdoses between Tuesday and Thursday.

And the Blood Tribe EMS says it responded to more than 50 calls during the same time period.

First responders say a form of carfentanil,

a powerful synthetic opioid, has been found mixed with an unknown substance.

Officials are asking people on the Stand Off reserve to be careful if they are going to use drugs.

Police chief Kyle Melting Tallow is encouraging people to report all drug activity and traffickers. ``Drug traffickers continue to prey on our community,'' he said Friday in a post on Facebook.

VANCOUVER – The University of British Columbia is creating a new professorship to study the potential role of marijuana to treat opioid addiction, a move that faculty members say will begin to fill a cannabis research gap.

Epidemiologist and research scientist M-J Milloy has been appointed as the Canopy Growth professor of cannabis science at the university. ``Dr. M-J Milloy will be Western Canada's first cannabis science professor at the University of British Columbia and the

first professor in Canada focused on researching the role cannabis can play in the overdose crisis,'' Mental Health and Addictions Minister Judy Darcy said at the announcement Friday.

Between January and September, more than 1,100 people died from suspected opioid overdoses, according to the ministry.

Milloy will lead clinical trials to explore how cannabis can help people with opioid use disorders stay on their treatment plans, the ministry said.

Milloy's research has already shown that daily cannabis use has been linked to an increased likelihood that people will maintain treatment and to

a lower risk of street-involved youth starting to inject drugs.

As a first step in the new position, Milloy said he wants to build on a preliminary study of 2,500 drug users in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. That study showed that individuals who were starting methadone or suboxone, which are the first-line therapies for opioid use disorder, were more than 20 per cent more likely to still be on treatment at the six month mark if they were using cannabis daily, he said. ``What we would like to do as a next step is test that association in a clinical trial,'' Milloy said.

Milloy has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed articles on how policy can affect health outcomes for people who use drugs.

Marijuana company Canopy Growth is contributing $2.5 million, while the province is paying $500,000 to UBC and the BC Centre on Substance Use for the position.

Dr. Dermot Kelleher, dean of UBC's faculty of medicine, said the university has established protocols to prevent conflicts of interest related to corporate-funded research.

Dr. Mark Ware, Canopy Growth's chief medical officer, said cannabis research has been limited by prohibition, which made it difficult to gather accurate information like prevalence and patterns of use because it was an illegal substance.

Stigma around the drug has also bled into the academic realm and limited people from taking the science of cannabis seriously, said Ware, who is also former executive director of the non-profit Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids and taught at McGill University's faculty of family medicine. ``For many reasons, it's been a challenging drug and will probably continue to be. This isn't ending overnight. We continue to face issues around the interpretation and importance of cannabis research, so I think we're at a turning point but we still have a long way to go,'' Ware said.

Fort William First Nation Community Members Snare in Some Tricks of the Trapping Trade

ort William First Nation community members learned some valuable new skills by taking part in a weeklong trappers course offered at the Fort William First Nation Community Center and on the land. Most people in the group know a trapper, saw how it was done but just never took the course. Some people have family members that still set traps. Nick Netemegesic, a commercial fisherman, skinned a marten for the first time.

The course was taught by Carl Lindstrom, who has over 40 years’ experience and two registered trap lines. He has been teaching the trappers course since the midnineties but he says that in nearly every course there are one or two students that know something about trapping that he doesn’t. The students typically come from a long line of trappers but over the years, as the price of fur dropped, but the cost of everything else went up, traditional trappers never earned what they put into it or made enough to fully support families as they once did. Leo Bannon Jr. has been hunting on the land with his family from the time he could pull a trigger, around 6 or 7 years of age.

Nowadays, he mainly hunts deer but has fond memories as a young boy watching older family members skin their trapped furs from martens to beavers. When I asked him why he took the course he said: “the more we know more about our culture is what we can leave behind”. Bannon’s son previously took the course and this could be a new family tradition.

The course taught the biology of the animals, what traps to use on what animal, how to maintain your equipment, how to trap the animal in the most humane way possible and how to skin and sell the animal fur.

The first animal skinned for the demonstration was a squirrel. The group then broke up into pairs and skinned martens. The next animal skinned was a beaver. Most of the participants in the group said they were excited to get out on the land and set some traps.

Each trap set has the potential of bringing in a little extra cash or some wild game for the supper table. The act of trapping connects us to the earth. A relationship worth developing.

Addiction could be caused by brain malfunction says research

By Jim Windle TORONTO — Recent extensive research models have shown that most addictions begin at relatively early ages, between the ages of 18-25, but this isn’t the most revolutionary finding on addiction in America, and by extension, Canada. Several addicted men and women participated in the CNN study, including Mexican born, Dr. Nora Volkow who is one of the world’s top researcher on addiction and its effects on the brain.

She and others are finding that there are two

distinctly separate parts of the brain that are in play when a person takes a drug that is known to be addictive.

The centre of pleasure, the part of the brain that is activated when we are experiencing pleasure, is in the back portions of the brain while the “stop” button, or the part that tells you to stop or not participate in a certain activity, is located. These are hardwired into our system as humans.

The “Go” button is where we certain emotions are centred that are relative to pleasure. These

are the base emotions that keep us alive and procreative. It’s that pleasure centre that keeps us coming back for food, or for sex for procreation, the two most basic of emotions. It is also where the fight or flight response is

ics of addiction and why it is so hard to break free from its grip.

She is among the growing numbers of medical and psychiatric doctors and researchers who have begun looking at addiction from a different angle and

are beginning to believe that addiction is caused or at least exacerbated by a malfunction in communication between these two important lobes in the brain.

March puts spotlight on death of Indigenous woman with infant twins

``It sends a strong message that we aren't going to be taking lightly our women being targeted and missing or murdered,'' said Bernard-Daisley, a local band councillor. ``We're going to speak up for our women.''

Organizers on Facebook called the event the Red Dress Protest, and many of the marchers wore red or held red dresses that fluttered in the wind.

Others posted photos of red dresses hanging in windows or from trees on social media in solidarity with the protesters, along with the #JusticeForCassidy hashtag.

The demonstration began with an opening prayer, followed by a smudging and a march across the causeway to the steady rhythm of a women's drumming group.

The We'koqma'q band council is offering a $100,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. ``Cassidy's murderer must be brought to justice,'' the chief and council

said in a statement. ``Her murder has devastated her children, family, our community and impacted the entire Mi'kmaw Nation.''

RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said police were on site Wednesday, ensuring the safety of the group and allowing them to ``peacefully express their views.''

The Mounties have not yet confirmed the name of the victim.

The woman's death was reported to police just before 11 a.m. on Oct. 24.

Police said in a news release she was found non-responsive in a home on Highway 105 in Waycobah, and that they believe it was not a random act.

The two infants are being cared for by family members, police said.

Bernard-Daisley added: ``They're in loving hands.''

The RCMP Northeast Nova Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation, and Clarke said more information is expected to

be released once the province's medical examiner has completed an examination into the circumstances of the woman's death.

She said while police appreciate the community's decision to offer a reward for information, ``we are confident that we have the investigation well in hand and will provide an update when more information is available.''

Googoo said the RCMP has run a ``thorough investigation,'' dedicating significant time and resources to solving the case.

Still, he said the march underscored that more must be done on the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women. ``We have to keep the spotlight bright on this issue,'' Googoo said. ``We need to keep the pressure on and make people aware that our women and our children are very valuable to us. ``We have the same feelings as any other person in Canada. We do love our women very dearly, we cherish them, we love our children and we hurt, we grieve and we feel pain.''

When they are not using, the brain’s natural flow of dopamine isn’t enough to satisfy that urge for pleasure or to convince you to say no.

Dr. Volkow’s research has also found that, in the same way other diseases can impede certain parts of the body in their natural function, like for instance, ALS or polio, a damaged or weakened connection between the pleasure lobe and the decision making

“It is difficult to accept but if you have heart

disease, for instance, you must either undergo a serious lifestyle and dietary changes to survive to a ripe old age,” she says.

Likewise, the brain is also susceptible to disease and certain measures should be taken to keep it healthy.”

It is especially hard for families to accept when their loved one can’t just simply quit taking addictive drugs. Treated solely as a psychological problem, it places even more pressure on the addict to “pull him or herself up by the boot straps” armed only with a damaged “No”

PORT HASTINGS, N.S. - Hundreds of marchers waving flags and placards blocked a causeway connecting Cape Breton Island to mainland Nova Scotia Wednesday, part of an effort to raise awareness about the unsolved death of a local Indigenous woman.

Cassidy Bernard, a 22-year-old mother of infant twins, was found dead at her home on the We'koqma'q First Nation last month.

Police are calling the woman's death ``suspicious,'' and say her two babies - in the home at the time of the incident - were not harmed.

Chief Rod Googoo said the march across the blustery Canso Causeway was aimed at shining a spotlight on the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous woman across Canada and will hopefully shed light on what happened to Bernard. ``She was a sweet innocent child herself,'' he said in an interview. ``She was only 22 years old, she had just had twins that were six months old.''

The Mi'kmaq woman's death has left the community in a state of shock and grief, he said.

Her cousin, Annie Bernard-Daisley, said hundreds of people from across the province joined the peaceful protest.

Cassidy Bernard, a 22-year-old mother of infant twins, was found dead at her home on the We'koqma'q First Nation last month.

Meth and weapons seized, two men face list of charges

BRANTFORD — Brantford Police say two local men are under arrest and facing a long list of weapons and drug charges after a city home was investigated by Brantford Police Service’s Street

Crimes Unit.

A 21 year old Brantford man and a 31 year old male from Paris were arrested after police uncovered nearly $15,000 of methamphetamine and a large cache of guns at a Dublin Street residence.

The pair are now in custody and facing 13 drug trafficking, theft and weapons charges.

SIMCOE — OPP in Norfolk County say they arrested a 49 year old man after he brought a large quantity of Cannabis into the Simcoe courthouse.

The man was screened on Friday morning by security officers when he tried to enter the building carrying cannabis.

He was arrested without incident.

49 year old Micheal Shaune Boughner was charged with possession to sell under the Cannabis Act. He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe at a later date.

OHSWEKEN — Police say one man was arrested and is facing impaired driving charges after he was found in a field, drunk behind the wheel of a car.

A resident of Mohawk Road reported a white Toyota Tundra drove up their driveway and into an adjacent field where it as parked. The driver was

asleep.

Police found the running vehicle and driver, who was still sleeping.

Officers woke the man and arrested him.

Eric Miles Hill, 33, of Wilsonville is now facing two impaired driving charges. He was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

Although relapses still occur, the success rates are noticeably higher when treatment is geared towards both lobes in the brain.

In essence, a person needs to learn how to enjoy things again, without artificial stimulation. That is where workshops and

phycological treatment for addictions can help.

Studies have also shown that the younger a person is when he she gets addicted, the more damage it does to that connection between frontal and what is called the parietal lobe in the rear of the brain. That is the connection between “hey, I want that” and “but it will hurt me if I do.”

The research is still coming in but more and more doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists are beginning to change their views on addiction and its treatment.

OTTAWA – The Truth and Reconciliation Commission heard concerns about coerced sterilization of Indigenous women during its years-long examination of Canada's residential school legacy, Sen. Murray Sinclair said Thursday as he joined a chorus of calls for a national investigation on the issue.

Sinclair, who chaired the commission, said cases brought to his commission's attention generally involved women who were under the supervision of a child-welfare case worker or a social worker from a child welfare agency.

As chairman of the TRC, Sinclair spent six years documenting Canada's residential school legacy _ a government-funded, church-operated assimilation

program from the 1870s to 1996 _ and issued 94 recommendations, including several involving child-welfare reform. ``It (coerced sterilization) was in fact an issue in Saskatchewan that had been raised with us,'' Sinclair, who was appointed to the Senate in 2016, told The Canadian Press on Thursday. ``We suggested that there needed to be an evaluation of the child welfare system's involvement in this.''

Sinclair now joins a growing list of people and groups, including Sen. Yvonne Boyer, Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde and Amnesty International Canada, who are concerned about allegations that Indigenous women were pressured into tubal ligations.

Any action forcing individuals into sterilization procedures must be stopped immediately, Sinclair said, adding the

UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide adopted in 1948 ``immediately comes to mind.''

Further investigation should fall primarily upon the shoulders of government, Sinclair said. ``They would have the ability to mandate an inquiry with the appropriate subpoena powers and the ability to summon witnesses before them to give testimony,'' he said.

This week, the UN Committee Against Torture heard from Canadian representatives about concerns over modern-day sterilization of Indigenous women in Canada. The UN committee is expected to release a report with comprehensive findings on December 7.

On Wednesday, committee rapporteur Sebastien Touze said forced sterilization must be seen as equivalent to torture.

He asked for Canada to

examine specific criminal provisions related to forced sterilization, whether it is perpetrated by a public agent or private individual.

When NDP MP Niki Ashton commented on the rapporteur's concerns in question period on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called coerced sterilization of some Indigenous a serious violation of human rights. ``We know that Indigenous patients can face systemic barriers in accessing services, including discrimination and racism,'' Trudeau said. ``We will continue working with partners to ensure all Indigenous Peoples have access to culturally safe health services no matter where they live in Canada.''

Forced sterilization is also at the centre of a proposed class-action lawsuit in Saskatchewan.

Alisa Lombard, an associate with a law firm

leading a proposed class action on forced sterilization of Indigenous women, said Thursday that immediate action is required to prevent the practice and protect Indigenous women.

Any national investigation into the issue should not prevent authorities from moving ahead on action, she added, including outlawing forced sterilization in the Criminal Code.

Lombard's firm, Maurice Law, has listed the Saskatoon Health Authority, the provincial government, the federal government and medical professionals as defendants in its statement of claim for the lawsuit.

The court action was launched in 2017 by two of the affected women, who each claimed $7 million in damages. The number of complainants has now grown to around 60.

Ex-Dean files lawsuit against Lakehead U THUNDER BAY — A woman who became the first female Indigenous dean of a Canadian law school has launched a lawsuit against the university, alleging it racially discriminated against her and forced her to quit her post earlier this year.

Angelique EagleWoman was appointed head of the law school at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay in May 2016.

She resigned in June and alleges she was consistently micromanaged and undermined in her position forcing her to resign.

The lawsuit claims EagleWoman encountered resistance from a small segment of the faculty, staff and students who suggested to her that ``she was not deserving of the position of dean and was not hired on merit.''

EagleWoman is asking for $2.67 million in damages.

Lakehead University has not released a response.

BRANT COUNTY – New Brant Mayor, David Bailey, is suffering from a case of information overload since winning the Mayor’s chair from Ron Eddy, who owned the office since 1994.

There are many differences between the two, but one thing Six Nations and the County of Brant should continue to do is respect one another, something lost between Six Nations and Brantford in recent years.

Brantford has a new mayor too, in lawyer Kevin Davis who unseated Christ Friel age 52. Despite his relatively young age, Friel has served as Brantford’s mayor for 17 of the past 24 years.

In Brant, Bailey, 61, received 4,478 votes compared to 3,156 for 87-yearold Eddy.

As it relates to Six Nations, the change in Brantford will be cautiously welcomed. Friel won over Six Nations support when he was young mayor with more than a cursory knowledge of the history

between Brantford and Six Nations. But as land claims issues bubbled into legal conflict, the relationship began to sour to the point where Friel, as member of a sham committee supposed to join Brant, Brantford and Six Nations closer together, he got upset when someone from Six Nations’ delegation questioned his motives and his honesty.

“Yeh that kinda blew apart,” says Bailey. “But I am working towards restoring that three way relationship.”

According to accounts of the incident, Friel got

angry, stood, and flipped off a foul comment towards Six Nations and stormed out, essentially shutting the well intended joint meetings down and the committee eventually withered and died.

That was then, this is now. Brantford and Brant have new Mayors, and Six Nations will likely be voting for a new elected Chief. That will change the dynamic greatly. David Bailey, for one, wants to restart the committee with new faces, and a new and fresh approach.

respect for Six Nations and so do I,” he said in a phone interview Tuesday. Growing up in Glenn Morris, Bailey is a little bit more aware of the land, environment and cooperation with Six Nations than perhaps a city dweller might. But he is more than willing to learn more about the real historical connection with Six Nations after he gets orientated in his new command.

“I think the problems that have come up between Brantford, Brant and Six Nations have been more about personalities than content,” says Bailey.

Brant, which is still more or less a rural community, has a world view much closer to those of the Haudenosaunee and Bailey wants to explore that further.

“I am looking forward to working with Chief Ava Hill,” he says.

Regarding his chosen path towards mending fences with Six Nations and Brantford, mayor-elect David Bailey, says he will always try and do the right thing.

He and Brantford’s new mayor Kevin Davis will be sworn in in separate ceremonies, in early December.

Thousands across Ontario faced impaired driving in 2018

By TRT Staff TORONTO — OPP say alcohol and drugs were a factors in the deaths of 39 people this year on OPP-patrolled roads.

From January 1 to mid-October 2018, the OPP laid more than 6,700 impaired driving charges across the province, 283

of which were impaired by drugs.

Police are reminding the public that it is never ok to drive impaired, whether by alcohol or drugs.

Ontario has a zero tolerance policy for impaired young, novice and commercial drivers.

Naked stranger arrested in rental home

KINGSTON — Police say a naked man was arrested after three women found him in the home they were supposed to be renting.

Investigators say the women were renting a home in Kingston through an online service, and when they arrived they saw a fully clothed man in the home.

They left, assuming he was the previous renter, and when they came back

he was naked.

Officers say the man went so far as to come to the door fully nude and stand in the doorway.

They say the women contacted the person who was renting out the home, who confirmed that nobody else was supposed to be there.

The 36-year-old man was arrested and taken into custody while he was still naked, and was charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling.

TORONTO, ON– Recently MusiCounts, Canada’s leading music education charity, hosted a celebration with JUNO Award-winning artist Derek Miller, to announce the 2018 MusiCounts TD Community Music Program recipients at Music For The Spirit in Ohsweken, ON on the Six Nations Grand River Reserve. A total of 30 community music programs from across Canada, including Music For The Spirit, will be receiving $500,000 in musical instruments and equipment, benefitting over 3,000 participants this year.

and all attendees were invited to join a collaborative song and dance circle to close out the celebration.

Additionally, several 2018 recipient programs from across the country were highlighted at the event.

"It's really awesome to be a part of Music For The Spirit, mentor the kids, show them something new and give them a jump start into music. Having the instruments from MusiCounts and TD will help the youth continue to develop and it gives the whole community a boost," said Derek Miller, JUNO Award-winning artist.

Music For the Spirit is a grassroots, youth-lead program focusing on learning keyboard, ukulele, guitar, drums and vocals.

The programming includes Indigenous visual arts and Indigenous instrument-making workshops.

Many youth in the community do not have access to musical instruments through other means, and the new instruments provided via the MusiCounts TD Community Music Program will mean more youth are able to experience the benefits of music.

The MusiCounts TD Community Music Program provides musical instrument and equipment grants up to $25,000 for after-school programs

and other community non-profit organizations, that have great potential yet need funding to ensure their sustained growth.

To-date the program has provided over $2.2 million in instruments and equipment to 125 programs nationwide. In 2017, TD Bank Group committed an additional 1.875 million to MusiCounts over three years.

SIX NATIONS — This past weekend, one of the largest collections of vendors and artisans took place at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

For two full days, visitors were given the opportunity to fuel the local economy and get some Christmas shopping in by travelling the floors of the arena to view more than 100 booths. The bazaar itself is an example of just how much entrepreneurial power there is on Six Nations.

But many people promise themselves to start Christmas shopping early — there are those that even begin shopping in September or earlier. But often times, procrastination takes hold; hence the long lines at the mall and the crowded and bustling streets during the holiday season.

Most Christmas shoppers spend an average of $800 for the holidays, so creating a budget is the best step forward. But if you’ve procrastinated, or missed out on recent bazaars and craft fairs, you aren’t alone. This article is a compilation of the most helpful tips to ease some of the stress!

Sudbury Skoden artist turns himself in

SUDBURY — Greater Sudbury police say that they have made an arrest in connection to the vandalism of the Sudbury water tower four months ago.

The painted slang “Skoden” was brandished on the water tower in early July overtop of “Sudbury.” Since, police scoured the area for information and surveillance footage of the incident but were unsuccessful in finding a culprit.

However, acting on an anonymous tip the officers contacted organizers of a local art event where a participating artist was seen painting an image of the water tower with the graffiti on it. Officers developed reasonable grounds to believe that the artist painting the image was the one responsible for the graffiti.

Early Tuesday morning, a 31 year-old Sudbury man turned himself in and was charged of mischief under $5000 as the damage to the tower itself nears $3000.

ANAHEIM — That’s the thing about rumours.

They tend to take on a life of their own. Recent rumours were sending Brandon Montour from Anaheim to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but there has been little more than speculation, and maybe some wishful thinking amongst the sports casters and writers who would love to see the Six Nations defensive specialist to add more firepower to the Leafs back end.

Not that that is a bad idea, but who would the Leafs put up for him that the Ducks need? It is on that point the rumour mill stops. The Ducks are pretty well off on the blue line, but need some more goal scoring from the forward lines. A Montour trade would be great for the Leafs, but not so much for the Ducks who have taken a cotton to him and will not let him go in a fire sale deal they don’t really need to make.

For now, Montour is just thinking about winning the next game in an Anaheim uniform and is not letting the talk disturb that goal and let the rest take care of itself.

Last Wednesday, Nov. 21, Montour earned his eighth assist, setting up Brantford’s Adam Henrique as the Ducks won 4-3 over the Vancouver Canukes.

Judging from his output so far season, Anaheim got a bargain when they signed Montour to a two year deal worth $3,387,500. According to rumours in Anaheim, Montour is a keeper and ain’t going anywhere.

Rumours had Brandon Montour going to Toronto, but nothing has materialized and there has been no announcement made from either the Anaheim or Toronto camp. In the meanwhile, he is just going to work and doing his job.

The National Lacrosse League and the Professional Lacrosse Players Association (PLPA) announced today that they have agreed to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement. The collective bargaining agreement is for a five-year term be-

ginning with the 2018-19 season.

“We appreciate the efforts of the negotiating committee and their tireless dedication to reaching a fair and equitable agreement for both the NLL and the players. This agreement has created a clear path for incremental growth, not just for the players and the existing clubs, but for the sport of lacrosse as well. Thank you also to the fans and

the players for your patience as we worked through this situation,” said Commissioner Nick Sakiewicz.

Additionally, PLPA President Peter Schmitz stated, “This new agreement sets the players in a great position for success as partners in a league and a sport whose best days are ahead.”

Daughter of the late Walter & Rose Bomberry; sister of Ann & Ken General, Russell & Yvonne Bomberry, Sandra & the late Pete Powless, Marjorie & Bill Longboat, and John Doxtator. Loving wife of the late Larry George Carpenter. Dear mother of Sharon & Kelvin, Cindy & Rick, Suzanne, and the late Anthony Larry Carpenter, and Patricia Jenn Sagassigi.
