Ontario Minister visits Onondaga Longhouse

SIX NATIONS – Armed with marching orders from Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Aboriginal Affairs Minister David Zimmer came to the Onondaga Longhouse at Six Nations Saturday with a personal invitation to join ongoing talks between Six Nations Elected Band Council, Haldimand County and Ontario regarding land issues, including the former Douglas Creek Estates land known by Six Nations as Kanonhstaton.

Zimmer reported that, in his estimation, the

It was Zimmer’s second visit to the Longhouse since February.

“There has been engagement between the Haudenosaunee and the government of Ontario, and that’s a very good thing,” he told the Chiefs and Clan Mothers and those present. “(Since 2006) we have met many times to discuss important issues, including the Nanfan Treaty, Burtch and, of course, the Douglas Creek Estates

land. We believe it’s time to develop new, more inclusive ways to accomplish the desired outcomes.”

He told the Chiefs and Clan Mothers that the door is open to them to participate and urged the Confederacy to accept the invitation.

Zimmer left a copy of his speech and remarks with the Chiefs, who promised to look over Zimmer’s proposal and discuss whether they will accept and send a response as soon as they are able to find consensus.

The Chiefs already declined a similar offer made

last summer, and the talks began without their presence.

“We’re going to have another leaders meeting soon and it’s important that the Haudenosaunee Confederacy chiefs be at that table,” Zimmer said.

“We would like them to be there and I formally invited them.”

He referred to the recent cleaning up of the Kanonhstaton site as a positive step, but suggested that more progress can be made with all the players at the table.

He took the opportunity to announce a newly

created economic development fund for aboriginal businesses worth a total of $25 million.

“We’re looking for three elements: to create local economic activity, to help First Nations create regional activity, like several First Nations working together, and to help First Nations diversify into things they might not have traditionally done.”

Before leaving he encouraged Six Nations entrepreneurs to access this fund.

Elected Band Council, which has a contract with Kearns International for a $4.3 million custom built brand new unit with twice the capacity of the current demonstration model, has ordered the tests on the 15-year-old demo unit to definitively prove the technology to be what Kearns says it is.

Members from the Men’s Fire were on site to oversee the test process and the Elected Council has assigned a monitor as well.

“I guess we’ll all know pretty soon won’t we,” said Bill Monture.

RWDI engineer, Kirk Easto, explained the test process to the Two Row Times.

Pointing to two probes, which will be inserted into the stack, Easto explained, “These two test devices look very similar but they test for different things. One looks for metals in the emissions while the second one test for semi-volatiles.

“We collect a very large volume which takes about four hours to do each test to ensure that we

get a good detection. If we don’t measure anything, we know that the amount is either very, very small or not there at all.”

Although his company has tested countless incinerators over the years, Easto says he has never tested this specific technology before.

Once the tests are done, the current plan is that the machine will be shut down, disassembled and removed from the site while retrofitting of the existing building will begin to make ready for the new, custom unit to arrive sometime in 2015.

Key witness testifies at Clause inquest

BRANTFORD – The coroner’s inquest into the March 4, 2011 overdose death of Robert Howard Clause, of Six Nations, commenced Monday, October 27th, 2014 in Brantford at the Superior Court of Justice, with Dr. Jack Stanborough presiding. A coroner’s inquest is mandatory when an inmate dies of unnatural causes while in the custody of a jail. The coroner’s inquest into the death of Robert Clause commenced just one day after another inmate, 27-year-old Kyle Dean Sandy, also from Six Nations, died suddenly while in custody at the Brantford Jail.

A key witness in the coroner’s inquest, Sgt. Mike Duchenau, the Operational Manager at the Brantford jail, testified that he completed rounds at 6:30am and saw Clause lying on the floor in his cell. His head was visible but his body was not because he had a blanket on. There were no signs of distress. The inmate ap-

peared to be sleeping.

At 7:05am, Duchenau heard, “Shift ITC Unit 6,” which indicates to staff that it is an emergency. He immediately went to unit 6. Upon arrival, Duchenau was informed that there was no response from Clause. He ordered the lights to be turned on. He observed Clause still lying on his right cheek, but with the lights on, he saw a pool of clear fluid around Clause’s head, which had drained and spread approximately one foot from his head.

The officers secured the other two inmates, Jay Maracle and John Emburgh, in the community room and Duchenau directed the officers to start 2-man CPR on Clause. While en route to get the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Duchenau had an ambulance called.

Duchenau testified the AED machine had not completed its diagnostics before paramedics got there around 7:30am. By 7:40am, the paramedics had pronounced Clause

dead.

The Brantford Police arrived. When Clause was pronounced dead, the police, per protocol, declared the area a crime scene and an investigation commenced. Inmates Maracle and Emburgh were taken to A&D. Through the course of evidence given, it was stated that items were seized pertaining to the Clause matter, including a half book with crushed pills inside, folded paper, clear fluid in a toothpaste tube, a cap with an orange pill and a melted, congealed substance.

The inquiry focused on the issues of “dry celling” an inmate, which is the process of segregating inmates suspected of having contraband in their possession for 4872 hours. Regular monitors by officers occur at least every 20 minutes but there is no video-supervising available in the Brantford Jail for this purpose.

was being dry-celled. Emburgh was in custody for committing a robbery at Eagle Place Apothecary.

It was believed that he had stolen 200 opiate pills from the pharmacy. A physician had informed the police that 100 pills had been recovered from Emburgh and that he believed that there were no more pills on his person. However, officer suspicions led to Emburgh being dry celled for 48 hours; he did not get dry celled for the maximum period of 72 hour period because the cell he was in was needed for another inmate.

Duchenau admitted that drugs in jails are a very serious issue. Officers must use the least intrusive method possible to conduct searches of the person. He described the 3 levels of searches of the person, including cursory observation, the pat

down or frisk search and the strip search. X-rays are the best method of searching for suspected drugs available to the Brantford Jail staff, but inmates can refuse an x-ray. An inmate, even with loss of freedoms, still has basic human rights; therefore inmates must sign a “Consent of Medical Treatment” form in order for the institution staff to administer an x-ray.

During questioning, Sarah Dover, legal counsel for the Clause family, quoted evidence that Clause had requested an inhaler during night shift but could not get assistance. Duchenau had not been advised that Clause had had trouble breathing the night before.

When asked if he had ever been offered or taken training to identify signs of an overdose, Duchenau stated that he had not

Dover read a statement made to Detective Jeff Spencer by Operational Manager, Sergeant Keith Wright, who had been on duty the night Clause asked for an inhaler. Wright’s statement contained comments like we “didn’t shove it down his throat” and Clause’s “cell partners didn’t say anything.”

Dover inquired with Duchenau about the relationship between inmates and the officers and Duchenau stated that the inmates come to the jail “with needs and we should help them address their needs.” He thought that mentorship was a good way to teach staff how to handle inmates and he identified that this was an initiative the Ministry had introduced, although it is not mandatory.

The inquest continues this week.

Straight talk about the Bering Straight

Scientists can be almost religious about their theories. Once they get their minds made up on a hypothesis, it is hard to get them to think outside of that box, even in the face of new scientific evidence.

For generations now, learned scholars have preached that the ancestors of the modern-day North American Indigenous people, migrated to North and South America by way of the Bering Straight land bridge between northern present day Russia and what is today Alaska.

But as global warming exposes land that has been buried under miles of ice and snow since the last ice age, a few more intrepid scientists have dared to question that

long accepted theory.

They have even named the land bridge as a landmass they now call Beringia and have evolved a new hypothesis that the early ancestors of Onkwehon:we peoples settled in this land for a thousand years before venturing onto Turtle Island (North America).

For others, it’s a long stretch theory given that there has not been any archaeological proof of that ever happening. The idea is only a hypothesis, since they have discovered evidence of rich vegetation in core samples deep under retreating glaciers, that it could have supported human life. Flimsy evidence indeed, but enough to protect the beloved Bering Straight crossing theory being taught to today’s youth as scientific fact.

A scholarly view of the “out of Beringia” theory in Past Horizons, an archeology magazine, noted, “the weakest link to the Out of Beringia theory is the lack of archaeological evidence.”

It goes on to say that there is absolutely no sign that humans lived in this region during this time.

In addition, although the study showed that the area had “surprisingly mild temperatures” during the summer (for an ice age), it was still cooler than the area is now, which is not particularly hospitable.

According to a recent review of the Beringia theory published in Scientific American, “This kind of vegetation would not have supported the large, grazing animals – woolly mammoth, woolly rhino,

Pleistocene horses, camels, and bison.”

Besides, as the timeline of the Bering straight theory goes, the migration of humans into North and South America came between 13,000 and 15,000 years ago. If so, it is hard to reconcile recent archaeological finds of stone tools in the New Mexico region dating back 30,000 years or better.

Since the early 1990s, the genetic evidence has indicated that Onkwehon:we, as distinct peoples, are at least 30,000 years old, and likely much older. Linguistic evidence has also pointed to Indigenous peoples of North America being at least 35,000 years old, and possibly 50,000 years old.

According to Alexander Ewen, a member of the Purepecha Nation

who holds a B.A. in History from the University of Virginia, “New evidence, especially from South America, is rapidly changing our understanding of the ancient past, making it hopeful that a century and a half of long-held dogma may be overturned, and other views about Indian origins will finally see the light.”

The “Topper” site in South Carolina is estimated to be 30,000 years old, even by the most conservative estimates.

There is also a long

‘Native’ costumes on sale, the group Tsong De Kwe asked to speak with a manager. She was given an email address to send her concerns, but they would not provide her with a telephone number.

Tsong De Kwe went home and after searching their website, found the language and terminology referring to the native population also to be offensive.

“The website describes us as though we are extinct or relics in a museum.

First of all we are still here and we do still exist. Plus, we don’t wear costumes, we wear Regalia. Regalia are well thought out; the patterns represent symbols and meanings. The colours can represent the person’s spirit colours, family colours or clan.

When I wear my skirt it

reminds me to be humble, I wear my moccasins to remind me to walk in a good way. People wearing these costumes are often drunk. In order to wear a headdress or breastplate you usually have to earn it, or be a chief. You cannot put on a costume and be “Indian” for a night.

You cannot understand or identify with 500 years of colonization by wearing a costume.”

The next day Anishabek grassroots organizers and a few allies returned to the store at noon to voice their concerns, and about 15 people stayed for the duration of the afternoon. Security repeatedly asked them to leave but they did not comply. After half an hour the security said they could stay, while Tsong De

Kwe replied “Ya, I know I can stay on my own land!”

The hyper-sexualized and racist Halloween costumes capitalize on ‘Indian’ stereotypes, with names such as ‘Pocca-hottie’ from the movie ‘Pocahontas’. Other costumes names included Huron Honey, Pow Wow Princess, Naughty Navajo, and Reservation Royalty.

In regards to ‘Pocahontas’, the group wanted to convey a strong point.

“They are making light of a 12 year old girl who was “married” to a much older European settler, an Anishinabek woman who was stolen and raped.

These costumes play into the fantasy; they put women at higher risk, and create further detrimental stereotypes. According to Amnesty International, Anishinabek women are 5 to 7 times more likely to have a violent death than other women, because we are more likely to have violent traumatic experience.

Pretending to be something you have attempted to conquer for 500 years is still colonized thinking. After 500 years, colonized thought hasn’t really grown. I have to raise my son to watch out

for this way of thinking.

It’s almost like re-colonization. Who we are as people has been disregarded... our thoughts and concerns are totally disregarded and they just do what they want anyways.

They are somehow offended that we are offended.”

Tsong De Kwe stays strong on her point: “We

held theory taught by the Indigenous tribal people of Japan, saying that Japan and the Far East was the eventual destination of migrating people who came across the Bering Strait, from North America to Siberia.

There is still a lot to learn and maybe over the next few years as the Glaciers recede; more evidence either supporting or refuting the Bering Strait land bridge theory will come into view.

We wear regalia not costumes

The group decided to check out some scary Halloween costumes at the Spiritshalloween.com store, Yonge and Dundas location, but the only thing that scared them was the ignorant racism displayed as ‘Indian’ costumes. “We came across one entire isle of all these native costumes, and we were flabbergasted because the costumes themselves were very revealing and the names were highly offensive.”

do not want these costumes to be produced, manufactured, or distributed, we want them gone.

For next year we are encouraging everyone to take a nationwide stance on this issue, we plan to start acting as soon as stores start selling Halloween items.”

YMCA construction uncovers ancient Onkwehon:we village

By Jim Windle BRANTFORD – Archaeological assessments being done on the site of a new Wilfrid Laurier University/YMCA complex on the south side of Colborne Street in Brantford, unearthed evidence of Indigenous occupation dating back between 1,000 and 1,500 years.

Three pockets of flint chards and pottery fragments were discovered.

Construction work was stopped to protect the integrity of the site until more extensive studies and digs can be conducted.

It is estimated that it will take up to three months to complete.

The Haudenosaunee Development Institute, Six Nations and New Credit of the Mississaugas elected councils were notified immediately following the discovery and have been invited to participate in the further archaeological surveys.

Brian Rosborough, of Laurier Brantford, told media that he was excited by the opportunity to contribute to the understanding of the historical richness that characterizes this region.

When referring to the enormous wealth of archaeological richness of the Grand River area, Lau-

rier Professor Gary Warrick once said there were only two archaeological sites along the Grand River – one on each bank.

This is further proof that he was right.

Although the old downtown buildings constructed on the elevated embankment of south Colborne Street date back

to the early to mid-1800’s, the foundations were dug by hand, according to Rosborough, which left some pockets totally undisturbed for more than 1000 years.

Six Nations historians have said that at least three addresses along south Colborne Street still belong to Six Nations, as

they were never paid for after the 807 acres of the Brantford Town Plot were surrendered for sale to the fledgling community.

This plot was to provide a place for squatters of the Haldimand Tract to settle after they were evicted by the Canadian government from Haudenosaunee land.

In the 1830’s, John Brant, son of Joseph Brant, helped survey the town plot, but Brantford has arbitrarily annexed, without proper compensation, many more acres of Six Nations farmlands ever since, including what is now known as Eagle Place, to grow the city of Brantford to the size it is today.

On September 15, 1838, Six Nations reported that Sir John Colborne had advised them to surrender to the Government the lands around the Brantford Bridge and he would then compel the squatters to leave their lands. A purported surrender was

of hosting a similar event called, “Harvest Noon.”

When that event couldn’t be continued this year, the elementary teachers reached out to the mem-

bers of the Brantford and District Labour Council to carry on the tradition in another format. They responded with enthusiasm for this worthwhile

cause.

taken for that purpose, but the squatters still remain on Six Nations lands.

According to research conducted by Phil Monture on behalf of Six Nations in the 1980’s, “No descriptive plans were signed, witnessed and attached to Purported Surrender No. 30 in accordance with 1812 Governor’s Instructions for the alienation of Indian lands.

“In the alternative, Six Nations did not receive full and fair compensation for the lands contained in Purported Surrender No. 30 as some lands were sold under their appraised value; some lands were not appraised; some lands were obtained by individuals as free grants and no payment whatsoever was made; some lands were taken for public purposes and no payment whatsoever was made; and some lands were obtained on the payment of only a patent fee or administration fee.”

MISHK EEG OG A M A NG – Mishkeegogamang First Nation is an Ojibwa nation located 500km north of Thunder Bay. Like other northern communities, Mishkeegogamang faces traumatizing poverty, despite billions of dollars of re-

sources being extracted from their territory by the gold mining industry.

A Northwestern Health Unit report stated that as many as 21 people live under one roof, and it is not uncommon for people to sleep in shifts to assure everyone access to a bed.

Of the 1,644 peo-

ple living in Mishkeegogamang First Nation, 8.6 people live in every house, leading to crises of overflowing septic tanks, homes without electricity or sewage, hundreds on constant suicide watch, and traumatizing poverty. A further 1,000 members of the community are in jail

and nearly 300 people have lost their lives suddenly since 1981.

Mishkeegogamang is on what is called Treaty 9 territory. Tom Wassaykeesic, a band councillor working hard to seek justice for his people, explained “According to the governments… we surrendered the land

and all its resources.

But our ancestors never agreed to surrender anything. We’ve always believed that the spirit and intent of the Treaty No.9 is to share the land.”

The original site where the treaty was signed is now underwater. In 1934, the Ontario government chose to build a hydro dam to supply the Pickle Crow Gold mine with hydro. Water began to rise in 1935, washing away homes, gardens and gravesites for the man-made Lake St. Joseph. People were not told they would be flooded and awoke to find water rising in their homes.

Stop the shell game The Aboriginal land claims “shell game” has got to stop. Whenever Six Nations has brought its concerns to one of its neighbours, be it Haldimand County, the County of Brant or Brantford, the shell game over whose duty it is to consult and accommodate begins.

“That is out of our hands,” say Mayors Eddy, Friel and Hewitt, who all claim that they, as municipalities, do not have that duty, and continue to develop, or expect to allow development, on land under legal registered claim.

The mayors say it’s a federal matter, and go ahead with their plans.

The feds point their finger at the province, where the land is registered under its own unilateral control.

All say, “It’s the duty of the Crown to consult.”

So who is the Crown?

From my understanding on the subject, it’s like those Ukrainian nesting dolls, where one doll fits perfectly into another identical doll of a smaller size. The Crown of Britain being the big Crown,

the Crown of Canada (federal) is the smaller Crown, the province is the next size Crown and so on right down to the municipalities which are “creatures of the province” and therefore in no way independent of the province, federal or British Crown. Not to mention the mysterious Crown Temple in Chancery.

Despite the smoke screen Friel, Hewitt, and to a lesser degree Eddy, put up, they are certainly included in the duty to consult issue, like it or not. We know the lower courts have ruled in their favour, but this Crown game is something that needs to be fairly dealt with at a higher level.

There has been significant headway made with recent Supreme Court rulings over the past dozen years or so, but to date, not enough to change local municipalities’ assumption of victimhood at the hands of greedy Natives, a bullying province, and an absentee federal government.

It’s time that all layers of government stop the shell game and start doing the right thing.

Meaningful consultation is required if justice is to be done and relations with Six Nations are to improve.

It is said that organizations have their own culture.

Walking into Ganohkwasra’s men’s programming section to interview Executive Director Sandra Montour, one can feel that Ganohkwasra has developed its own organizational culture based on love, kindness and understanding.

Montour – Mohawk nation, Turtle clan – is a mother of two, and a grandmother. When we think of effective leadership at Six Nations, Montour stands out not only because of her unique, principled approach but also because of her tenacity in reaching goals that benefit the common good at Six Nations.

Ganohkwasra translates to mean “love among us” and it serves not only as an appropriate name, but also as the guiding principle for policy within the organization. The centre has a reputation for being trailblazers in their understanding of family violence and their willingness to address the issue using a mixture of both modern modalities and traditional knowledge.

Montour advises that there have been conscious efforts to acknowledge that violence is not just perpetrated against women by men. The services offered at Ganohkwasra focus on the family. The shelter at Ganohkwasra offers safety to both men and women. The shelter is now supervised by a man, which Montour believes makes it one of a kind in Ontario, if not Canada. The key principle or understanding at Ganohkwasra is that we must respect our interconnectedness with

each other and with the spirit world. This understanding informs program development and policy development.

It is Ganohkwasra policy that staff must take counselling. It is also policy at Ganohkwasra to take responsibility for your feelings. If someone feels offended by a comment made by another staff person, their policy is that it is up to the staff person to go back and try to work it through with the other person.

“Sometimes it takes two or three times,” Montour said, “but the person is not allowed to walk around talking about the other person because that behaviour festers a horrible energy and creates a poor working environment.”

She explains it’s then that person’s responsibility to not do it again, though she admits, “We will because we are human.”

Though no one is perfect, the policy is in place to make the work environment feel safe. She stated that while it is staff’s responsibility to ensure their own wellness, their supervisor can also help them. The supervisor will

sit down to do a self-care plan with each employee, focusing on setting at least one goal in each of the four areas: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual.

Montour stressed the importance of self-care when you work in this field. Staff must take care of themselves, not just for their own benefit, but as a requirement to properly serve their clients. This job deals with life or death situations.

Montour told of a time when she had been working as a counsellor and her ears suddenly felt really clogged. She went to the doctor and the doctor told her that there was nothing in her ears. Montour realized that she had heard too many stories of trauma and it had manifested physically in her. She had a good reiki session to assist her at that time.

Today, in addition to her full-time position as the fearless leader at Ganohkwasra, Montour also maintains a small private practice from home with a small list of clients – just enough to keep her happy. She believes strongly in alternative therapies, so she also charges and sells crystals through her home business, Native Crystal Energy. She makes aromatic oil blends that help induce sleep or relieve stress and pain. This, in addition to time spent with family, is Montour’s selfcare.

The stress in the Executive Director position often comes from the battles to access appropriate funding for Ganohkwasra.

Montour has found it necessary to become more politically involved. She advocates provincially for Native shelters because, as poor as Ganohkwasra is, the rest of the shelters that serve Native people in the province are poorer.

She stated that there are so many shelters that are

feeding their residents using food obtained through food banks. They have no money for counselling services. Montour actively participates in the Aboriginal Shelters of Ontario, which will be releasing a needs assessment soon, comparing the disparities of resources granted to on- and off-reserve service providers.

“I feel proud to go out there and talk about our programs and services.

But we’re always striving to be better. Our people deserve the best,” she says.

Ganohkwasra serves 2000 clients a year and has a constant waiting list.

Montour reported feeling sick when she heard that Prime Minister Stephen Harper was not going to fund an inquiry into the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. She stated that she “did not know where it came from,” but upon hearing of Harper’s callous response to the MMIW issue, she sat down and wrote a “not so pretty” letter about systemic racism from the perspective of a white man looking down on Aboriginal governments and thanking the Canadian government for being a good role model. Reading Montour’s letter, one can hear the frustration of having to fight for every little morsel obtained for this community. The letter was sent to numerous media and Montour has received a few requests for interviews as a result of the letter.

Two Row Times goes to Pine Ridge Dear Editors, I wish to firstly congratulate you on the publication of the Two Row Times for over a year. It is an impressive accomplishment!

I would secondly like to share my experiences of how your paper was received when I recently drove across Turtle Island with a friend and some copies of the paper.

Our planned route across Turtle Island was, originally, to be north of the 49th parallel. However, we ended up driving to the south of it, which turned out to be something of an experience.

At the beginning of our journey we decided not to use any electronics for directions or advice on where to stay. We just thought that it would be a better way to travel.

However, it meant that we sometimes did not know exactly where we were.

We remembered the Two Row Times when we found ourselves lost in an incredibly economically deprived area. It turned out to be Pine Ridge, South Dakota, a community of Lakota people. Kind people in the shop where we purchased food gave us directions to the highway.

En route to the highway we found a road sign that gave us our exact location – Wounded Knee.

Nearby was also a Historic Landmark sign, which informed us that there had been a battle in 1890 at the site. At least, that was one version of events – a piece of wood with ‘massacre’ written on it covered part of the text.

Behind the Historic Landmark sign was a

wooden structure with tree branches for a roof. A Lakota man invited us to enter this unofficial ‘visitor info’ site. Inside were photocopied documents and newspaper reports, detailing how the 1890 ‘battle’ was indeed a massacre, with the wounded and those who fled being killed in cold blood. The only survivor was a baby, Lost Bird, hidden beneath her mother’s body. Bill Cody later put her in his Wild West Circus.

After chatting for a while, other people from the reserve joined us. We talked about many contemporary issues. Pine Ridge is the poorest US zip code, with unemployment exceeding 80% and the majority of houses without electricity, water, or a telephone. There were problems with keeping money on the reserve, too, as a small Lakota elite made off-reserve real estate purchases and ran businesses like casinos and hotels. We got a sense that there were growing tensions between ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ in the community.

The average life expectancy at Pine Ridge was under fifty years.

Men often did not reach even 40 years. Alcoholism and diabetes were epidemics. No shops within a reasonable drive of the reserve had food that honestly could be called wholesome. US monopolies made great profits by undercutting the reserve shops. Lakota industries, especially hemp production, struggled against federal or corporate law suits.

Despite their adverse circumstances, several Lakota people were actively promoting com-

munity pride. Having supportive local media was seen as essential for informing everyone about their rights and historical injustices. Copies of the Two Row Times were well-received, with our conversation afterwards turning to the problems of keeping a paper going, especially when skilled youth leave the area, and the need for aiding journalists with scholarships or internships.

The people that we spoke with at Pine Ridge were also impressed by the Two Row Times ideal of fostering dialogue between Haudenasunee and non-Haudenasunee people. They appreciated that, while needing to focus on issues within one community, commonalities often existed with the situation of other peoples, sometimes more so than with one’s own kith and kin. If many non-Lakota people were known to be facing hardships, too, one man said that the real issue involved building bridges between communities and exposing the individuals who benefited at everyone else’s expense.

I think that, with more forums like the Two Row Times across Turtle Island, we all will be able to start having more conversations with our neighbours about some of the larger problems facing us as human beings on planet Earth. I believe many of us are broadly thinking along the same social justice and environmentally-sane lines – and what can be done about these issues in such ways that benefit the majority of us, from all communities.

Stan Beardy addresses municipalities There are over 300,000 Indigenous people living in Ontario, many of whom live in urban centres and First Nations communities bordering major municipalities.

When municipal elections take place within Ontario, a growing number of Indigenous people take to the polls, increasing voter turnout, which has risen an estimated 52.1% this year.

First Nations are becoming increasingly engaged and involved politically in the municipal system, which influences the reality of poverty, employment, health care, education, housing and a number of other polarizing challenges they face. They want municipal leadership that will effectively address their issues.

The Chiefs of Ontario Political Confederacy, made up of First Nations leadership from the various Treaty and First Nations areas within the Province of Ontario, extend their congratulations to all newly elected and returning municipal leaders.

As municipal leaders take the time to consider their mandates, the Chiefs of Ontario Political Confederacy urge them to also begin outreach with First Nations communities and leaders within their regions to have a larger dialogue on issues of shared interest and concern. Municipal governance is changing.

neighbouring First Nations communities are developing stronger constructive relationships and respecting each other’s jurisdiction.

Within Ontario, municipalities and First Nations are increasingly finding innovative ways of working together.

Some recent examples include, but are not limited to: York Region, City of Vaughan and the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and Six Nations of the Grand River; Town of Midland and Beausoleil First Nation; City of Kenora and Grand Council Treaty #3; City of Elliot Lake and Serpent River First Nation; City of Kingston and the Six Nations of the Grand River, Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.

First Nations/municipal relationships will play an important role in determining how the province of Ontario evolves. In addition to the “bread/butter” and other issues that are galvanizing First Nations residents of your communities – municipalities need to also consider potential impacts of proposed project/decisions that impact on First Nations’ Treaty and Aboriginal rights.

Together, First Nations and municipalities must work with the Ontario Municipal Affairs and Housing, and other government ministries to ensure we move forward in mutually beneficial ways in all sectors.

Again, congratulations to all newly elected Mayors and Council throughout Ontario. On behalf of the Chiefs of Ontario Political Confederacy, we look forward to building and nurturing a strong relationship over the next four years. As part of our responsibility towards this, we will be reaching out to organizations that bring municipalities together so that you may have additional opportunities that will enable information sharing and communication with First Nations leadership. Also, we encourage you to include First Nations leadership in your official business so that there can be effective, well-rounded dialogue.

Sconedogs & Seed Beads Overcoming lateral violence through love

By Nahnda Garlow My daughter is going through a phase of being afraid to fall asleep on her own. Every night for the last few weeks she has been up way past her bedtime – making excuses for getting out of bed 6 and 7 times a night. Now, I’m a pretty patient mom but one night, after being frustrated with the late nights I tried to take a hard line.

When eight o’clock came around I announced bedtime. “Okay Halle its time for bed. March up those stairs and go get your jammies on.” I told her.

“Okay mommy!”, and she bounced up the stairs, her long brown hair swinging back and forth across her back as she went.

This was the easy part. Pajamas, storybooks and brushing teeth usually goes down without issue. When we hit the part where she has to lay down, close her eyes and let her mind go to sleep something unsettling takes over and for weeks now – she just can’t relax.

Suddenly I heard little feet creeping down the stairs. I looked at the clock and it was 9:30. “I just need a drink of water,” she said.

“Okay but back to bed right away,” I confirmed, as I hand her a glass of water.

For the next hour, every 15 minutes she would creep back down the stairs and have another story about why she couldn’t get to sleep. ‘I’m hungry.’ ‘There’s a weird noise in my room.’ ‘It’s too dark.’ ‘I don’t like my pajamas.’ The excuse list is creative and endless.

We tried storybooks, we tried teddybears, and we tried lullabies. We tried more blankets, we tried less blankets. We tried food, we tried chamomile tea and we tried talking it out. Finally after three hours of lovingly and consistently re-

directing her back to her room she burst into tears.

“I’m so tired but I can’t sleep without youuuuuu!” she wailed. “Mommy, it’s scary in my room when it’s dark” she cried.

A huge piece inside my heart broke for her.

In that moment I saw two options: continue the hard line of discipline and let her cry it out until she fell asleep or pick her up in my arms and comfort her. It was an easy choice.

I lifted my little girl in my arms and didn’t even give it a second thought. I lay down beside her and she snuggled into my chest, pressing her little fingers into my belly fat like she always does to find that place of comfort.

“Shhhh. Go to sleep now babe,” I whispered.

In five minutes she was out like a light.

I remember being afraid like that when I was her age. Anytime I’d wake up from a nightmare I would crawl into bed with my parents and as soon as I was in that warm safe spot of love between them all my fears would disappear and I could rest again.

Fear is the absence of love. And in the presence of love, there can be no fear.

Writing this column is not easy. Every week I engage in heavy self-analysis and for the last six weeks it has been excruciating. I’ll write something down and then three or four paragraphs in I’ll delete it all. Even today I started out about six or seven times before I just cried in frustration.

“I can’t write anything!”

Finally it hit me: I’m afraid. Afraid of what?

Rejection mostly. Afraid that my thoughts, my feelings and my self-analysis would be ridiculed, negated, or inspire people to a campaign of hateration directed at me.

It’s the plague to artists of all forms: self-doubt.

The consuming beast of self that says nothing you do is important or good

enough. Heck I wish I was six years old again and that I could snuggle away my fears!

For a lot of us who grew up in the system of

on-rez lateral violence – we didn’t get enough ‘community snuggles’.

I’m talking about affirmations. Peer oriented affirmations that you belong, you matter and you’re doing a good job. Worse yet is that many of us did experience the exact opposite: like the crabs in the bucket syndrome for example. The minute you do something different or interesting somebody is waiting in the wings to attack you and start a critical campaign that

what you’re doing sucks.

It’s viral and it’s abortive to the creative process that is innate in so many of our Haudenosaune ‘cousints’.

I don’t have full understanding of the Great Law, or my Haudenosaune culture. I freely admit that. But one thing I do hold fast to and that is the teaching that the Peacemaker inspired my ancestors to cast down the weapons of war against one another. To me that is legit. To me it

means never engage in an attack against another Haudenosaune person – ever. Further to that it also means to love one another. Forever and ever for all time: always keep the covenant of love and peace between one another. Never attack or fight your own people.

During the First World War, the official policy of the Dominion Government was that Natives should not participate in the conflict.

At this time, First Na-

tions’ Peoples did not have the right to vote and were considered through treaties and the Indian Act to be wards of the state. But from their vantage point, they could not be conscript-

ed because they were not Canadians at all but rather a sovereign people ready through treaties made with there forefathers to fight alongside Britain as allies, and not subjects.

It was also argued that in many First Nations’ treaties it was stipulated that band members would be exempt from any Canadian military service. All Native soldiers who served

were volunteers.

In fact, over 3,500 Indians enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force representing about 35 percent of the Native male population of military age.

Remembering the horrors of war

By Xavier Kataquapit Lest we forget. That is the resounding phrase that reminds us all of the horrors of war, and of all those who lost their lives in conflicts all over the world. We all know that November 11 is set aside for us to remember those who have perished in war.

A few weeks ago my friends in the Bradley family from Six Nations near Hamilton, Ontario participated in an early ceremony set aside for the remembrance of local First Nations people who lost their lives in war. It was held by the Six Nations Veterans Association in Ohsweken. The Bradley Patriarch John Bradley Sr., who passed away this year, was a decorated World War II veteran. In years past, he was on hand for remembrance ceremonies. His wife Norma and daughters Laurie and Luanne lay wreaths in his memory, and for those who have fallen in war. His son, John Jr., read the honour roll call and act of remembrance. Chief Ava Hill was on hand to voice her words of support, healing and remembrance to all those in attendance.

I am hopeful that we as civilized people have come to the point in our development that we can see new ways to work together in a world community and wars are considered a barbaric thing of the past. That means that we really have to dig deep and be realistic and honest in our Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Most of us are not buying the mantra of war anymore and if we hope for a new world with better ways to solve conflicts, we need to stand up and be counted. For Everett’s sake.

Corvairs fight their way to first

By Jim Windle CALEDONIA – The Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs had a very busy and productive weekend, winning three games in three nights vaulting them into first place in the Golden Horseshoe Conference.

Sunday night’s 5-2 win in Welland displaced the Canadians from the top spot. Heading into this week’s schedule, the Corvairs lead with 29 points, one more than Welland, and three more than St. Catharines.

Welland and Caledonia exchanged a goal appease in the first and second periods before the Corvairs exploded with three unanswered goals in the third, which also featured a slug-out between Caledonia’s Tyler Lepore and Welland’s Andy Paul.

Saturday night, in Fort Erie, it was the methodical pressure of the Corvairs through all three periods that produced the win. It was 1-1 after 20 minutes, 3-1 after two, and 5-2 at the final buzzer.

All hell broke loose in the second period as hockey took a back seat to several on-ice battles and 127 minutes in penalties and five game misconducts. In

total Caledonia received 87 minutes on 23 infractions and Fort Erie got 80 minutes on 19 infractions.

Halloween night was a nightmare for Ancaster netminders Matt Calas and Matthew Venturelli as the Caledonia Corvairs scared up a 6-2 win over the Avalanche in GOJHL hockey action at the Haldimand Arena. Calas faced 48 shots and Venturelli faced two in the 1:47 he was in the crease, for a game total of 50 shots.

Meanwhile Caledonia’s Brendan Polasek had to fight off boredom at the other end of the rink, being called upon only 12 times and making 10 saves.

donia’s direction right from the opening faceoff as Jake Brown, Todd Ratchford, Jordan Peacock, Tyler Lepore and Peacock again, made it 5-0 by the end of the first period. Connor Patton added another at 6:43 of the second for a 6-0 lead, which is how the period ended.

Both of Ancaster’s goals came in the third period, with Ben Hughes and Owen Burnell taking advantage of a cold Polasek who faced three shots in the first, four in the second and five in the third.

The Corvairs are off now until Saturday night when Pelham are the guests at the Haldimand Centre Arena. Game time is 7:30 pm.

"Bean's Bantams" score impressive win Improvement is what really matters

By Jim Windle OHSWEKEN – Six Nations Midgets started slow, but finished strong Sunday with a 5-2 win over the Glanbrook Rangers at the Gaylord Powless Arena.

After a fluke goal scored by Jesse Gibbon on a powerplay handed the visiting Glanbrook Rangers the lead early in the first period, the Six Nations Midgets were fortunate to keep the score where it was as the period ended. Glanbrook looked faster and stronger on the puck than Six Nations.

That situation changed dramatically in the second period as Six Nations started playing a little more aggressively and purposefully, but not before the Rangers added a second goal when they capitalized on another powerplay chance a minute and a half into the second.

Suddenly, Six Nations woke up and pushed back with three quick goals, stunning the visitors.

Travis Longboat finished off an end-to-end rush by Donny Whitlow who dished the puck off to Longboat on the crease who tipped it in to cut the Rangers’ lead in half.

Hayden Smith made good on his own rebound to even the score at 2-2, assisted by Hill and Daryl Porter at 9:28 of the middle frame, and Nick Martin add-

ed another 20 seconds later, assisted by Sam Green.

Thirty-six seconds later Six Nations Bantams held a 4-2 lead after Vern Hill scored from Daylen Hill, who assisted on three of Six Nations’ goals.

Hunter Sibbic was credited with the final goal of the game at 6:50 with a goal crease tip-in for the 5-2 final score.

“I think, by far, it’s the best game we played all year,” said coach Terry “Bean” Smith. “Well, maybe the last two periods anyhow.”

He has found that his team picks up the pace

By Jim Windle OHSWEKEN – Arnold “Bub” Jacobs’ mission with his young PeeWee Intertown team is not so much making them championship winners as a team, as it is to help each and every member of his team become better hockey players.

Blair Green opened the scoring for Six Nations at 8:45 of the first period, with Donavan Monteforte drawing the assist.

There was no scoring in the second. Monteforte cut diagonally across the high slot area and drifted a shot towards the Ingersol net. Dawson Sharpe got a piece of with his stick, but not enough to stop it completely as the puck deflected into the back of the net.

“I noticed today that our players had their heads up. We’ve been working on that at practice,” says Jacobs after his team’s 2-0 win over Ingersol, Saturday afternoon at the Gaylord Powless Arena. “There was a lot of hard work done by our defensemen.”

Although certainly pleased with the win, it is the improvement in his players that has him excited the most.

“It’s good to see them playing more like a team today, looking around to see who’s open. It’s good to see that.”

The next phase in his team’s development is endurance.

“We’re lacking in that a little bit, but it will come in time,” Jacobs says.

They had a lot of opportunity to improve this week with a very busy game schedule.

Obediah-Blasdell retains Canadian Bronze

By Jim Windle MISSISSAUGA – Canada’s elite amateur boxers assembled in Mississauga to compete in the 2015 Elite Canadian Championships at the Delta Meadowvale Hotel and Conference Centre, hosted by Boxing Ontario. One hundred elite boxers registered, including 55 male and 45 female boxers, ages nineteen and older. They all stepped into the boxing ring and went toe-to-toe in pursuit of the Canadian championship title last weekend. Among them was Six Nations’ Cher Obediah-Blasdell from the Black Eye Boxing Club in Brantford.

Obediah-Blasdell was defending her Bronze Medal performance from last year’s competition and hoping to turn her Bronze into Silver or Gold.

“I wanted to win the gold and immediately go pro, but sometimes things happen the way they do for a reason,” she said. “I am going to stay amateur and train harder, put on a few pounds and take the gold next year and try to get on the Canadian Olympic team, then go pro.”

Kent Monkman: Painting in an age of colonial denial

SIX NATIONS – Over 50 people spent an enjoyable evening at the Woodland Cultural Centre with reknowned Cree-Canadian artist Kent Monkman last Wednesday night. Monkman spoke of his engagment with the Canadian art scene, his interests as an Aboriginal artist, and treated the audience to a narrated slideshow of his major works. The Two Row Times had a chance to talk with Monkman about his work after the event.

How did you get into the art world?

I identified at a very early age as an artist, so I guess it was really just a question as to which path I would need to take to arrive there, as a professional artist. As a teenager I studied illustration because I didn’t want to wait on tables. Shortly after graduating, I made my own oil paintings and [developed] my own art projects. It worked well because I was able to freelance and [devote] a lot of time to my own art practice.

I think pretty early on in my work, part of my journey was trying to find the vocabulary through painting or visual expression that I could really make my own, that would allow me to express the themes or concerns that were important to me.

But it wasn’t until the late 90s that I found a strong direction which started with the prayer language paintings using Cree syllabics as a motif to talk about colonization, and the impact of Christianity

What are your thoughts on the Idle No More movement?

I think that Idle No More (INM) is amazing.

It brought to the surface what many artists, like myself, were already doing for many years, but it brought it to a public light. Many artists have been carrying forward the same intent and core values of what INM represents.

The fact that it grew to a grassroots movement where non-artists and regular people were embracing it and acting on it really brought it to the public in a different way.

All the things that INM talked about and [are] bringing to the forefront and raising awareness [about] is stuff that many artists have been doing for years.

It’s about challenging perceptions people have about First Nations still today, and the history that was written about us, and all these things that were happening in our communities for a long time.

Monkman’s exhibit will be on display at the Woodland Centre until December 20th, 2014.

Can this power be used to offset the hydro in our homes?

Power generated from these projects are sold into the Ontario Hydro One power infrastructure to be used wherever the system needs it. At this time, Hydro One is not willing to provide the administration required to provide a subsidy for the bills of Six Nations members. We hope to be able to provide a solution and provide subsidies in the future.



Why is this coming to the community when the projects are so far along?

SunEdison believed that they had fulfilled their duty to consult and accommodate. When they attempted to sell the Norfolk Bloomsburg project to current owners (Firelight Infrastructure Partners) Six Nations sent a letter to Firelight to make them aware that SunEdison had not fulfilled their legal duties.



Where does the money go?

A trust is currently being assembled to disburse funds to community priorities. Currently the Charter/TOR for the trust is being drafted. It is anticipated that the selection process for the Board of Trustee will happen in the early part of 2015. The early explorers consistently described the native Americans as tall and well formed. Of the Indians of Texas, the explorer Cabeza de Vaca wrote, “The men could run after a deer for an entire day without resting and without apparent fatigue. . . one man near seven feet in stature. . . runs down a buffalo on foot and slays it with his knife or lance, as he runs by its side.”

The Indians were difficult to kill. De Vaca reports on an Indian “traversed by an arrow. . . he does not die but recovers from his wound.”

The Karakawas, a tribe that lived near the Gulf Coast, were tall, well-built and muscular. “The men went stark naked, the lower lip and nipple pierced, covered in alligator grease [to ward off mosquitoes], happy and generous, with amazing physical prowess… they go naked in the most burning sun, in winter they go out in early dawn to take a bath, breaking the ice with their body.”

The diets of the American Indians varied with the locality and climate but all were based on animal foods of every type and description, not only large game like deer, buffalo, wild sheep and goat, antelope, moose, elk, caribou, bear and peccary, but also small animals such as beaver, rabbit, squirrel, skunk, muskrat and raccoon;

reptiles including snakes, lizards, turtles, and alligators; fish and shellfish; wild birds including ducks and geese; sea mammals (for Indians living in coastal areas); insects including locust, spiders and lice; and dogs.

According to Dr. Eaton, these foods supplied plenty of protein but only small amounts of total fat; and this fat was high in polyunsaturated fatty acids and low in saturated fats. The fat of wild game, according to Eaton, is about 38 percent saturated, 32 percent monounsaturated and 30 percent polyunsaturated.

This prescription may be just fine for those who want to promote vegetable oils, but it does not jibe with fat content of wild animals in the real world. Seal fat, consumed by coastal Indians, ranges from 14 to 24 percent polyunsaturated. The fat of all the other animals that the Indians hunted and ate contained less than 10 percent polyunsaturated fatty acids, some less than 2 percent. Most prized was the internal kidney fat of ruminant animals, which can be as high as 65 percent saturated.

Politically correct paleo-dieters also ignore the fact that the Indians hunted animals selectively. The explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson, who spend many years with the Indians, noted that they preferred “the flesh of older animals to that of calves, yearlings and two-year olds… It is approximately so with those

northern forest Indians with whom I have hunted, and probably with all caribou-eaters.” The Indians preferred the older animals because they had built up a thick slab of fat along the back. In an animal of 1000 pounds, this slab could weigh 40 to 50 pounds. Another 20-30 pounds of highly saturated fat could be removed from the cavity. This fat was saved, sometimes by rendering, stored in the bladder or large intestine, and consumed with dried or smoked lean meat. Used in this way, fat contributed almost 80 percent of total calories in the diets of the northern Indians.

Beaver was highly prized, especially the tail because it was rich in fat.

But small animals like rabbit and squirrel were eaten only when nothing else was available because, according to Stefansson, they were so low in fat. When a scarcity of game forced the Indians to consume only small animals like rabbits, they suffered from “rabbit starvation.”

Above all, the food writers tell us, avoid fats, especially saturated fats. The hunter-gatherer’s diet was highly politically correct, they say, rich in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids but relatively low in overall fat and very low in that dietary villain-saturated fat. This is the one dietary factor that health officials tell us is responsible for all the health problems that plague us –everything from cancer and heart disease to obesity and MS. That the hunter-gatherer was healthy there is no doubt. Researcher Weston Price noted an almost complete absence of tooth decay and dental deformities among Native Americans who lived as their ancestors did. They had broad faces, straight teeth and fine physiques. This was true of the nomadic tribes living in the far northern territories of British Columbia and the Yukon, as well as the wary inhabitants of the Florida Everglades, who were finally coaxed into allowing Price to take photographs.

of tooth decay, arthritis and any other kind of bone deformity. TB was nonexistent among Indians who ate as their ancestors had done, and the women gave birth with ease.

Price interviewed the beloved Dr. Romig in Alaska who stated “that in his thirty-six years of contact he had never seen a case of malignant disease among the [Onkwehon:we] although it frequently occurs when they become modernized.

He found, similarly, that the acute surgical problems requiring operation on internal organs, such as the gall bladder, kidney, stomach and appendix, do not tend to occur among [traditional Onkwehonwe peoples] but are very common problems among the modernized ones. Growing out of his experience in which he had seen large numbers of modernized Onkwehonwe attacked with tuberculosis, which tended to be progressive and ultimately fatal as long as the patients stayed under modernized living conditions, he now sends them back when possible to their [original conditions and to a diet of country foods], under which the death rate is very much lower than under modernized conditions.

Deaths from rabbit-starvation, or from the eating of other skinny meat, are rare; for everyone understands the principle, and any possible preventive steps are naturally taken.”

Ruminant animals, such as moose, elk, caribou, deer, antelope and, of course, buffalo were the mainstay of the Amerindian diet, just as beef is the mainstay of the modern American diet. The difference is that the whole animal was eaten, not just the muscle meats.

Beverly Hungry Wolf describes the preparation and consumption of a cow in The Ways of My Grandmothers, noting that her grandmother prepared the cow “as she had learned to prepare buffalo when she was young.” The large pieces of fat from the back and cavity were removed and CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

Growing with Garlic

Planting garlic this fall represents an important milestone in my journey to reconnect with the land and those I’m sharing the journey with. Garlic was the first crop we built garden beds and prepared the field for. We barely got all of it the ground before the ground froze with the first big snowfall. In learning from our first garlic plant of last year, we are much better prepared and organized this time around.

With the change of the seasons, fall has brought us around full circle. Along the way, those I plant with and I have learned and shared many lessons. These lessons continue to be built upon as we grow together, both on the land and with each other. Our shared experi-

ences have given us a better collective understanding of what factors affect the size and quality of the garlic. I personally have also discovered how menacing dogs and chickens can be when they get into your raised bed of garlic.

Sharing the garlic with family, friends and community was one intention when it was planted. It has made its way to a number of garden beds and fields, including the community garden supported by the Our Sustenance program. Also, it has played a supporting role in many local preserves and meals. I have also been lucky to have made a new friend and pen pal that lives in Ajax brought forth by our mutual love of local, organic foods, especially garlic.

The mass produced, imported garlic you typically find in gro-

cery stores lacks many qualities of the locally grown hardneck varieties. Many are surprised to find out how much depth of flavour our garlic has without being offensive.

Aside from tasting great, garlic is good for you. It has many medicinal qualities that help boost your immune system and is also a proven anti-fungal medicine.

This past weekend, we got a number of rows planted with friends and family. We then shared a pot of naturally grown, local vegetable soup. Sharing the soup in good company warmed me in more ways than one and gave me a moment to stop and reflect on the last year, which I am truly grateful for.

All the excess fat inside the body was hung up so the moisture would dry out of it, recalls Beverly Hungry Wolf. It was later served with dried meat. Some fats in the animal were rendered into “lard” instead of dried.

A variety of plant foods were used throughout the North American continents, notably corn (in the temperate regions) and wild rice (in the Great Lakes region). Dry corn was first soaked in lime water (water in which calcium carbonate or calcium oxide is dissolved), a process called nixtamalizacion that softens the corn for use and releases vitamin B3, which otherwise remains bound in the grain. The resulting dough, called nixtamal or masa, can be prepared in a variety of ways to make porridges and breads. Often these preparations were then fried in bear grease or other fat. Many

groups grew beans and enjoyed them as “succotash,” a dish comprised of beans, corn, dog meat and bear fat. As an adjunct to the diet, corn provided variety and important calories.

But when the proportion of corn in the diet became too high, as happened in the American Southwest, the health of the people suffered. Skeletal remains of groups subsisting largely on corn reveal widespread tooth decay and bone problems.21 Tubers like the Jerusalem artichoke (the root of a type of sunflower) were cooked slowly for a long time in underground pits until the hard indigestible root was transformed into a highly digestible gelatinous mass. Wild onions were used to flavor meat dishes and, in fact, were an important item of commerce. Nuts like acorns were made into gruel or little cakes after careful preparation to remove tannins. In the Southeast, pecans contributed important fat calories. In the southern areas, cactus was

consumed; in northern areas wild potatoes.

Staples like corn and beans were stored in underground pits, ingeniously covered with logs and leaves to prevent wild animals from finding or looting the stores. Birch bark was used to make trays, buckets and containers, including kettles.

In general, fruits were dried and used to season fat, fish and meat-dried blueberries were used to flavor moose fat, for example. Beverly Hungry Wolf recalls that her grandmother mixed wild mint

with fat and dried meat, which was then stored in rawhide containers. The mint would keep the bugs out and also prevent the fat from spoiling.

Modern food writers who assure us we can enjoy the superb health of the American Indian by eating low fat foods and canned fruits have done the public a great disservice. The basis of the Indian diet was guts and grease, not waffles and skimmed milk. When the Onkwehonwe abandoned these traditional foods and began consuming processed store-bought foods,

their health deteriorated rapidly. Weston Price vividly described the suffering from tooth decay, tuberculosis, arthritis and other problems that plagued the modernized Indian groups he visited throughout America and Canada.

Add some good fats (butter, tallow and lard), aim for liver or other organ meats once a week (but don’t fret if you can’t achieve this with your own children), make cod liver oil part of the daily routine, eat plenty of meat and seafood, and augment the diet with a variety of plant foods prop-

erly prepared, including a few that are fermented.

Keep sugar and white flour to a minimum.

Meanwhile, be skeptical of government guidelines. The Indians learned not to trust our government and neither should you.

Craft-Brewed Beer and Rock for the Soul

By Nahnda Garlow If craft beer, good food and live local rock bands is your kind of thing, you have to check out Zander’s Fire Grill & Brew Lounge on King George Road in Brantford. Zander’s opened just over a year and half ago, but the community is flocking there raving about the food, the atmosphere and the great prices.

Owner John Coutsis has a generations-long family history in the restaurant business.

He successfully opened two other top notch local restaurants unique to the City of Brantford: Gus & Guidos and Angel’s Diner. Zander’s Fire Grill definitely follows suit in quality meals combined with a great dining experience.

This is one of the

only places locally you can order Beer Can Chicken, which is literally roasted chicken floating on a beer can. Coutsis says it is by far it is one of the most popular dishes. Mondays they offer $5 burgers, Tuesdays is $10 Pasta Night and on Sundays Kids Eat Free after 3pm.

Coutsis says he wanted to open a place that was more geared to the thirty-something crowd.

“Someplace I would go.

Somewhere I could take my wife and we could have a good time, enjoy some delicious food, some great beer. But also a place people could bring their kids during the day and grab a burger for lunch.”

The dining room is a comfortable, friendly and open atmosphere where you feel like you can just

settle in and hang out for a while. Painted portraits hung on the walls are a classy homage to legendary rock icons like Kurt Cobain, John Lennon and Jim Morrison, which comes across way cooler than the cookie cutter “as-much-eclecticmemorabilia-as-you-canfit-up-there” style many other restaurants of the rock genre have adopted.

Zander’s bar area has some great decor as well: two custom Harley Davidson motorcycles and a one of a kind flaming electric guitar chandelier. Behind the bar are some of the friendliest servers in the area, and on tap you will find local and organic craft beers such as: Zander’s own

Craft Brewed Red, Cream Ale, Lager and Dark Lager, Bell City Brewery’s Eureka Cream Ale, Mill St. Brewery’s Organic Original beer, and Beau’s Lug & Tread.
