OUR MISSION TWO RIVER THEATER creates great American theater by developing and producing new works and world masterpieces that most richly direct our gaze to the life of the human spirit. We cultivate an audience that cherishes the intimate joy of theater, enriched when shared by a community of others. Two River produces American and world classics, new plays and musicals, programs for young people, and a Latiné new works festival. Each year, we serve over 20,000 students, families and community members through our 4-show season, and 50+ events that reflect our diverse community of Monmouth County. We produce work on two stages—the 343-seat Joan and Robert Rechnitz Theater, and the flexible 110-seat Marion Huber Theater. In 2020, we expanded our campus to 80,000 square feet with the opening of the Center for New Work, Education and Design. Two River has commissioned and premiered original projects including Be More Chill by Tony Award® nominee Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz (the theater’s first Broadway production) and Hurricane Diane by former Playwright-in-Residence Madeleine George (which won an Obie Award for its Off-Broadway run). In June 2019, Two River was nationally recognized by USA TODAY as one of “10 great places to see a play.”

WELCOME TO TWO RIVER THEATER It is our honor to be creating and experiencing this art with you.

THE LAND UPON WHICH WE GATHER IS PART OF THE TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF THE LENNI-LENAPE, CALLED “LENAPEHOKING.” Two River wishes to acknowledge the Lenni-Lenape as the original people of this unceded land where we proudly present our work and strive to be a vital cultural resource for our community.

COMMITMENT TO INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND ACCESS (IDEA) We believe the essence of theater is democratic: it invites us to encounter, consider, and perhaps adopt other points of view, if only for a brief time in a darkened theater. We aspire to build an environment in which artists, audiences, employees, and Board members from different backgrounds and experiences together form an institution that is equitable, diverse, and inclusive.

A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

JUSTIN WALDMAN Dear Friends, Healing. Isn’t it wild that the COVID pandemic happened over a half decade ago? Something that paralyzed the world, came and went and now has been gone for more time than the Spanish Armada lasted or Julius Caesar reigned or the length of an NBA Max contract, and nearly as long as The Beatles recorded together as a band. But have we ever really healed? Someone once described emotional capacity to me as a bucket of water—it is generally about half full and, for the most part, easy enough to carry. As we alleviate or take on burdens, its volume waxes and wanes, and we tote it alongside us on our journey. During COVID, our buckets uncontrollably overflowed. Ceaselessly pouring in, water and worry spilled haphazardly over the top of impossibly full buckets. Laden down by the weight, the relative calm of stasis lost. When it all ended—faucets turned off, leaks plugged, then immediate emergence and return to daily life—did we ever take the time to bail out the excess freight? This is an uneasy détente with a precarious meniscus. One drop, and there’s a cascade. A jostle, and something spills. How do we return to equilibrium? Stir posits a way through. Shared experience, ritual, connectivity, joy. Seeking out the sublime within the unprecedented. When all around is at sea, a humble pot of beans may quiet turbulent waters. Transporting us to a simpler frame of mind. For there is nothing more human than sharing a meal with those you love. And that alone, is healing.

TO OUR PATRONS, In alignment with our mission of showcasing stories that direct our gaze to the life of the human spirit and cherish the joy of theater, we celebrate this story in its fullness and ask that you allow yourself and others to do the same. As we tell stories that center on Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility, all of which are among our core values, and share a multicultural perspective, we ask that you join us in creating safe spaces for everyone to bear witness to this story. We invite you to laugh, cry, question, consider, engage, and find joy or discomfort. With this in mind, we hope that you cherish and value everyone’s individual experience as we all journey through these narratives together. Enjoy the show!

With gratitude,

JUSTIN WALDMAN

LEADERSHIP BIOS JUSTIN WALDMAN (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR) (he/him) is a theatrical producer and director who has brought over 250 productions to life during his over 20-year career. As Associate Artistic Director at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, CA, one of America’s flagship regional theatres, he has developed new musicals and plays, American and world classics, holiday programming, and overseen one of the country’s preeminent Shakespeare festivals. During his tenure, the Globe transferred six productions to Broadway, including A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Tony Award® for Best Musical), Bright Star (Tony® Nomination for Best Musical), and Almost Famous, had seven productions remounted in venerable New York theatres including Lincoln Center Theater and Roundabout Theatre Company, and presented 35 world premiere productions. Justin was instrumental in the creation of the Old Globe’s Social Justice Roadmap, which charts a path toward making the Globe a more just, equitable, representative, accessible, and anti-racist institution. At Williamstown Theatre Festival, where, as Artistic Associate, he led the Literary Department and new play development initiatives for three seasons, six of the 11 new plays produced were subsequently presented at New York theatres including Lincoln Center Theater, Roundabout Theatre Company, Playwrights Horizons, The Culture Project, and more. Other prior staff positions include Artistic Associate of the Huntington Theatre Company in Boston, MA and Producing Artistic Director of Next Stages, which he founded. Justin is a graduate of Tufts University.

NORA DEVEAU-ROSEN (MANAGING DIRECTOR) (she/her), originally from Brooklyn, NY, is a dynamic arts leader with a deep commitment to championing new voices and new stories. She currently serves as Managing Director of Two River Theater, a nonprofit producing theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. Before joining Two River, DeVeau-Rosen was a key member of the development team at Pasadena Playhouse in California, where she secured the largest general operating gift in the company’s 105-year history. Previously, she was appointed by Cirque du Soleil to serve as General Manager of The Works Entertainment, producer of the world’s largest magic shows. In that role, she managed multiple global productions while leading the integration of both companies. From 2016–2019, she served as General Manager of East West Players, the nation’s longest-running theater of color and largest producer of Asian American Pacific Islander work. Under her leadership, the organization doubled its operating budget, expanded its Board of Directors, successfully navigated a major artistic transition, and co-produced Allegiance starring George Takei. Earlier in her career, she was the Managing Director of Clubbed Thumb, the acclaimed New York company known for producing “funny, strange, and provocative new works by living American playwrights.” DeVeau-Rosen has also worked with Imaginer, The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Heidi Duckler Dance, Manhattan Theatre Club, New York Theatre Workshop, and The Bushwick Starr, among others. She has served as a grant panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, New Jersey Council for the Humanities, New Jersey Arts and Culture Renewal Fund, Impact100, California Arts Council, Center Theatre Group, and ART/New York. She currently serves as a Trustee of RiverCenter in Red Bank and the Boys & Girls Club of Monmouth County, is a nominating committee member for the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, and serves on ArtPride New Jersey’s Membership and Audit Committees. Her additional community involvement includes work with Planned Parenthood’s Shore Access Committee, Executive Women of New Jersey, Monmouth University’s Business Council, the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign of Red Bank, and the Monmouth County Collective.

ROBERT AND JOAN RECHNITZ (CO-FOUNDERS) founded Two River Theater in 1994—when Monmouth County was the only major population center in the state without a professional regional theater. After producing seasons at Monmouth University and the Algonquin Theater in Manasquan, Joan and Bob led a community effort to build a new, permanent home for the theater in Red Bank. In 2005, they opened a state-of-the-art, two-theater complex which was designed by the renowned architectural firm Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates. Bob directed many shows for the theater including the opening production in the new building, the classic American comedy You Can’t Take It with You. Bob served as the theater’s Executive Producer until his death in 2019. Since moving to Red Bank more than 50 years ago when Bob began his teaching career at Monmouth University, Bob and Joan participated in—and generously supported—arts and culture, health, education and environmental stewardship. They have been recognized for their roles as community leaders.

STIRRING THE POT By Fiona Kyle, Literary Manager What can a pot of black beans tell us about a family? In Stir, playwrights Melinda Lopez and Joel Perez explore the ways food connects us to our elders, preserves family history, and helps us navigate grief. A familiar recipe can become something larger: a ritual, a gathering place, and a reminder that the people we love remain part of us. The history of the play began during the Covid-19 pandemic, when theaters went dark and artists searched for ways to create and connect. Lopez, then an artist in residence at the Huntington Theatre Company in Boston, reached out to Perez about collaborating. For Perez, the invitation arrived at a time of uncertainty. “It felt like a kind of lifeline at the time,” he recalled. “I felt so unmoored as a theater artist in the Covid era so being tasked with doing something creative was incredible.” “I was cooking up a storm in 2020 and having conversations with my mother about Puerto Rican family recipes,” Perez said, making food the natural starting point for their collaboration. When we are in the kitchen, we share stories while stirring the pot; when we go camping, we tell stories around the fire; in the theater, we’re also sharing stories. “There is a ritual to both [theater and cooking],” Perez mused. “You also have to be present and aware of all your senses.” Lopez added other ingredients, “Community. Flavor. Nourishing. ... [Both are] visceral and satisfying.”

18

Transforming simple ingredients into something shared, inviting people to gather, participate, and find meaning together is what we do in the kitchen and in the theater. Perez enjoys The Barefoot Contessa while Lopez has little patience for competitive cooking shows (“The competitive ones are so mean! And Julia Child is too hard!”). While they disagreed on cooking shows, the writers discovered how much they did have in common: both are first-generation Latinos who grew up in Massachusetts and who enjoyed camping as kids. The two imagined a virtual offering where they might cook, invite guests, and share stories, like their own cooking show. “But the more we talked, the more a story seemed more interesting than real life,” Lopez explained. In 2021, Lopez and Perez’ Black Beans Project made its world premiere as a shorter digital work at the Huntington Theater Company by way of Zoom, starring both playwrights as brother and sister. Neither writer was ready to let the characters go and felt there was “a bigger story [there] about grief, and denial, and family — and making something beautiful with cheap ingredients,” Lopez reflected. They brought a revised version of Black Beans Project right here to Red Bank in 2023 with our annual Latine new works festival, Crossing Borders (now ¡Festejo!), before it received its world premiere at The Old Globe in San Diego in 2024. Lopez and Perez expanded the play by including the character of Papi, bringing another generation into the mix. For Perez, adding Papi to the play built a bridge between the siblings and their father. “They are all coming face to face with their own mortality,” he said. Yet the recipes that remain offer a way to preserve what might otherwise be lost. “Recipes are a way those loved ones can live on in our minds and hearts.” For Lopez, that connection is deeply personal. “My parents are no longer with us,” she shared, “I find myself getting more and more like them every day.” The recipe at the heart of the play came from Lopez’s own family. The writers considered flan, sancocho, and pasteles before settling on black beans, a staple in Cuban households and a dish that could be prepared during an evening of theater. For Lopez, the recipe represents a connection across generations,

“That’s basically the recipe I learned from my mother who learned it from hers.” Lopez has adapted the recipe over time, sometimes adding corn or sweet potatoes. She admits to one culinary transgression, “I do use brown rice ... Don’t tell anyone.” Perez shared that some of his inspiration for the play was that, during the pandemic, he had attended a number of Zoom funerals and he “was struck by how much we need mourning rituals to truly process grief,” and how challenging that experience was when we were all social distancing for safety, without being able to physically connect with another person. For a play inspired by the heaviness of the Covid-19 crisis and processing grief, the playful nature of both Lopez and Perez help bring to life the characters of Stir with some outrageous comedy. For Lopez and Perez, the kitchen became a place where this family could confront what has changed while holding on to what remains. Lopez wanted to “create something beautiful during a terrible time,” and in Stir this family has the opportunity to connect over a favorite comfort meal that helps them make space for memories, stories, and the conversations families sometimes struggle to have. Stir reminds us that finding our way forward begins with gathering around a table, sharing what we have, and stirring something familiar back to life.

WHAT YOU NEED TO START

By Melinda Lopez, Co-writer of Stir Black beans are so good for you! They are delicious, create a healthy gut biome, are an amazing source of protein and give instant good karma cuz they are vegan! Your friends and family will admire and love you for feeding them this wonderful meal. Traditional Cuban food is not spicy —but feel free to add whatever hotness you like. This recipe will be mild, creamy and delicious.

1 A yellow ceramic bowl (any other color or material is also acceptable) 1 A good and loving heart (your own.) 2 Onions 6-8 Cloves of garlic

or even more

1 Green bell pepper 3 Tbsp. olive oil

a couple Healthy pinches of salt 1 Pinch of pepper a few Shakes of cumin some Oregano 1 Tsp. of sugar (any kind) 2 Bay Leaves 1 Cap of red wine vinegar some Parsley, chopped fine Hot white rice (sorry, classic Cuban black beans MUST be eaten with white rice. But if you are partial to brown rice, I won’t tell.)

TO NIG HT

T H I S M O RN I N G

Get your black beans from your favorite grocer or bodega.

Q: Do I drain the bean water? A: There is no right answer, and lots of debate! Some people say “Yes! The water is full of bean gas, and draining it will make your beans less gassy.” Other people say, “No! The water is full of nutrients! And makes the beans taste better. Don’t drain. You are a crazy malcriao! My farts smell like flowers!”

1. Pour the beans onto a table. Enjoy the musical clink clink clink. With your yellow ceramic bowl (or other) in your lap, carefully check each bean before dropping it into the bowl (clink clink clink). Take out any small stones, or weird little shaped beans, and set them outside for animals to enjoy. Rinse the beans. Cover the beans with cold water (about an inch over the top) and let them sit overnight.

24

1 lb Dried black beans, black turtle beans, frijoles negros

2. Put the beans and water (in a nice size pot) on the stove, medium high. Add one big slice of onion. Bring to a boil and then simmer (covered) on low for an hour.

MAK E T HE SO F RI TO 3. In another pot or frying pan, drizzle the olive oil in a pleasing rhythm, circling the bottom of the pot, one, two three swirls (or 3 Tablespoons). Set on medium heat. 4. Chop the onion and rest of the other onion. Chop it fine. Chop the garlic. You can never have too much garlic. Chop it fine. Chop the green pepper (wash that pepper and remove stem and seeds). Chop it fine. 5. When the olive oil is shimmering, add the onion. Cook until onion softens, about 3 minutes. 6. Add the green pepper. Cook until the pepper softens, another 3 minutes. 7. Add the garlic. Cook another 3-4 minutes, stirring. Wachalé! If it cooks too fast or sticks, turn the burner down or add more oil.

They should smell and taste delicious in about 30 minutes. If they don’t, add more: salt & cumin. You can also sprinkle in—if you wish—1 tsp of sugar (any kind).

E AT I N G 10. When your beans are beautiful and cooked and magical, chop some parsley (chop it fine) and add it to the pot. In Cuba there is a saying about someone who is very busy and prosperous. Es como el perejil. Esta en todo. (They are like parsley. They’re in everything.) Get a lovely bowl or dish, and a nice cloth napkin. Maybe a flower in a vase. Set yourself a beautiful table. Turn off your phone. 11. Add a scoop of white rice (or your preference) to your bowl. Ladle glorious, fulgent and flavorful black beans all over your white rice. Add one cap full of red wine vinegar over your beans (this brings out the flavors!) You can also add a swirl of nice olive oil if you like. Sit at your table with a loved one, or your favorite book of Neruda love poems (or a suitable alternative) and enjoy!

A LT E RN AT I V E S You can do so many things with black beans!

When the sofrito looks nice and caramelized, and smells divine, you can turn the burner off.

MAS H THE B E A NS 8. Check the black beans. Are they tender? If not, keep cooking. If they are tender (not mushy), take a healthy sized ladle full of black beans—maybe a cup—and add to another bowl. Take about half the sofrito, and add to the bowl. Mash them up. You can use a wooden spoon or a potato masher or a food processor or blender or any other mechanical marvel. Smash everything together to make a soft mash-y paste-y blend. 9. Add it back to the black bean pot, along with the rest of the sofrito. Add two healthy pinches of salt, one pinch pepper, some shakes of cumin (maybe more), oregano and two bay leaves. Sorry, there are no measurements. More than a teaspoon but less than a tablespoon? Simmer on low heat, uncovered. If the beans are too thick, add more water. They should always be very sauce-y, never clump-y. Stir them occasionally.

Mexican-ish—add frozen corn when you add the spices. Garnish with cilantro and lime juice instead of parsley and vinegar. You can also add shredded cheese. Soup—run everything through a food processor. Serve with sour cream or yogurt and some roasted pepitas. You can add leftover chicken for extra super-power. Black Bean Bowl--Brown rice, black beans, sliced avocado, cherry tomatoes, walnuts, arugula and other greens, any leftover anything else. Drizzle with oil and vinegar.

Love Xxxx Abrazos Ooo Melinda
