Two River Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director John Dias and Managing Director Michael Hurst, develops and produces great American theater.

Through 10 theatrical productions each year (including world premieres, musicals, classics and theater for young audiences) and 50+ annual events happening around Monmouth County, we produce exceptional theater and cultivate engaged audiences.

Two River celebrates and honors our core values of Artistic Excellence; Education and Community Engagement; Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; and Operational Excellence.

Founded by Joan and Robert Rechnitz in 1994, Two River is recognized in the national theater community for its newplay commissioning program, which creates a pipeline for developing work that contributes to the vitality and future of the American theater. Each season, the theater hosts numerous artist residencies, workshops and readings, and presents an annual Cabaret of New Songs for the Musical Theater in association with NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program.

The Crossing Borders (Cruzando Fronteras) festival and Nosotros program foster a closer relationship between the theater and Latino artists and audiences. Two River cultivates a new generation of theatergoers through innovative arts education programs that introduce young people to the theater and create opportunities for them to engage with renowned theater artists. BEFORE PLAY Join us 45 minutes prior to every performance in the Two River lobby for a pre-performance talk, which will give you valuable insight into the play you are about to see. Talks last 10-15 minutes and are led by a member of the company or Two River’s Artistic Department.

POST-PLAY DISCUSSIONS Post-play discussions are scheduled following three performances of every production. During these discussions, audiences are invited to share their questions and responses to the work on stage with members of the cast and staff of the theater. Post-play discussion dates for the current season can be found in our season brochure or on our website.

INSIDE TWO RIVER EVENTS A series of mostly FREE arts & humanities events specially curated for each of our productions. Events include film screenings, book club, poetry readings, crafting nights, lectures, social events with our artists & more! A NOTE FROM THE

MANAGING DIRECTOR MICHAEL HURST MICHAEL HURST

Dear Friends, Those of you who regularly attend productions at Two River Theater know that, each season, I use this space to take our audiences behind the scenes of our work. This year, I am writing about the “state of the theater” with a great deal of excitement and anticipation.

The volume of work produced by Two River—and our reputation, both locally and nationally—has grown significantly over the more than two decades since our company was founded by Joan and Robert Rechnitz in 1994. Today, as we near our 25th Anniversary, we present year-round activity, including a full season of plays (a mix of world premieres, musicals, classics and theater for young audiences); robust year-round Education initiatives; and more than 40 annual arts and humanities events at the theater and around Monmouth County through our “Inside Two River” audience-engagement program.

Today, however, even as our theater building continues to be a jewel here on the west side of Red Bank—and, increasingly, a venue for community gatherings—our administration offices are filled to capacity with our 50-member staff. And, our production facility (the Chavant Building, where we create scenery and props, and store costumes) is aging and rapidly deteriorating.

And so, we are pleased to announce that we are planning an addition to our existing theater that will replace the Chavant Building, and provide much-needed space to support our ambitious activities and operational needs. You can read more about this new building on pages 24 and 25 of this program.

One of our goals for this new facility is to better serve our community as a civic resource through increased readings, conversations, public lectures, classes, and workshops. Through these activities, the building will create opportunities for members of our community to engage with the many great artists who are increasingly coming to think of Two River, and Red Bank, as an artistic home.

American regional theater exists because of the determination of a group of visionary leaders, among them Margo Jones (Dallas Theater Center), Zelda Fichandler (Washington, DC’s Arena Stage), and Tyrone Guthrie (The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis)—all lions in the nonprofit theater field who paved the way for the next generation of visionary leaders, like our very own Joan and Robert Rechnitz.

John and I are proud to follow in their footsteps—and to hold to their great belief that theaters must strengthen the cities where they are based by contributing to the civic life and economies of their neighborhoods, by making them livelier through the presence of artists.

We recognize that there will be some temporary inconvenience for our patrons due to the construction. Please know that we will do our best to minimize any problems, and plan to be responsive to your needs and concerns throughout the process.

Cillian O’Sullivan (Gerry) is an actor who is pretty much fresh off the boat from Ireland to make a life here in the U.S. Born in NYC he began his acting career at the age of 5, kicking off his theater debut as Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol Off-Broadway. Moving back to Ireland with his family at the age of 9 he continued to perform growing up, in roles such as Gar in Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here I Come!, Michael in Frank McGuinness’s Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, and an award-winning performance as The Father in Enda Walsh’s Bedbound across some of the most prominent theaters in Ireland and England. His TV and film career began to take shape at the age of 17, landing roles like Conor in BBC’s 6Degrees, which was a smash hit in Ireland and the UK and ran for four successful years, leading to further roles such as Eirik in the History Channels Vikings and Bobby in Lionsgate’s UK & Ireland boxoffice hit Maze, which has just finished its cinematic run, to name a few.

Christa Scott-Reed (Agnes) was most recently seen Off-Broadway in Church and State at New World Stages and starring opposite Richard Dreyfuss in Relativity at TheaterWorks.

Brian Friel (1929 – 2015), author of over 30 plays, is considered one of Ireland’s greatest dramatists. His plays have won numerous awards including the 1979 Evening Standard Award for Best Play and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play for Aristocrats, and Tony, New York Drama Critics Circle and Olivier Awards for Best Play for Dancing at Lughnasa. SISTERS ON STAGE

Brian Friel may have been drawing on his own rich memories of a childhood spent among his aunts when he wrote the gorgeous Dancing at Lughnasa, but he was also making his own contribution to the canon of great plays about sisters written for the Western stage. From the time of the Greeks, playwrights have been turning to sisters to explore some of the deepest questions about how to live, and how to bear the passage of time.

What makes sisters such ripe dramatic material? Naturally, as anyone who has them knows, all sibling relationships have drama built in to them. By their very nature, sibling relationships are about competition for resources, factioning and tactics, intimacy within bonds that weren’t freely chosen, the search for solace and companionship—the whole gamut of human activity takes place within the intimate theater of family life. But there’s something about sisters in particular, and most particularly sisters growing older together, that makes playwrights drift towards elegy.

So many of the great sister plays—I’m thinking, of course, of Chekhov’s Three Sisters but also Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart and even Wendy Wasserstein’s The Sisters Rosensweig, among others—are threaded through with bittersweet melodies, songs of disappointment and desire.

Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece begins with the chiming of a clock, and Olga’s famous opening observation, “Father died exactly a year ago today.” She and her sisters Masha and Irina spend much of their play looking back to a sweet, idealized past while they yearn for a bright, impossible future, in a “Moscow...Moscow...” they’ll surely never reach. Beth Henley’s Magrath sisters, Lenny, Meg and Babe, may be feistier on the surface than the Prozorov girls (Lenny hasn’t been home in a decade, having left town to pursue her dream of making it big in music, and Babe has been arrested for shooting her abusive husband), but still the play takes their reunion as an opportunity to take stock of how far each woman has come, what she’s done for love in her life and how she’s fallen short of her own ambitions. Wendy Wasserstein’s Rosensweig women meet at a moment when not only their own personal lives but the very world order they’ve come up in

is threatening to split at the seams; the play’s got laughs—all Wasserstein plays have laughs—but it sounds more melancholy notes than perhaps any other of her works. And in Lughnasa, Brian Friel builds a play that can see the past and the future simultaneously, so that what’s come before and what lies ahead run like cool aquifers beneath the warm, hopeful present.

Perhaps this elegiac pattern is just structural—maybe sisters seem to playwrights like facets of the same human form, a way to examine human motivations in relief: if one sister has taken path A, then another has taken path B, and a third path C, making them emblematic of the myriad ways we might stumble through life, the many outcomes our choices might lead to. There’s something to that, I think; sisters are the same but different, variations on a theme. As with Nicholas Nixon’s extraordinary series of black-and-white portraits “The Brown Sisters,” in which the photographer arranged four women—his wife and her three sisters—in the same order and photographed them once a year from 1975 through today, watching sisters change over time amplifies the resonance of the changes any one individual exhibits as the years go by. But there must be more to it than that, too. Sisters do more than just reflect and refract each other: more often than not, sisters see through each other’s pretenses, past each other’s brave faces. They’re uniquely capable of holding each other to account, knowing as they do the intimate truth of each other’s histories. So sister plays get to the heart of human experience because sisters themselves stand so close to each other’s intimate lives. And that gap between what we long for in public and what we know to be true in our hearts—that our lives, no matter how well-intentioned, often end without fulfillment—is a terrain rich with dramatic potential. No wonder so many dramatists have turned to sisters to tell these stories about hope and disappointment, the ticking metronome of the human heart. n 19

JOHN DIAS (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR) assumed his position as Artistic Director of Two River Theater in August 2010 after working as a producer and dramaturg in New York for 20 years. In partnership with Managing Director Michael Hurst he has brought new vitality to the 24-yearold Red Bank theater, including producing subscription shows on two stages for the first time; launching the theater’s first literary department and commissioning program for new plays; presenting annual events such as a musical theater cabaret in collaboration with New York University’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program and the Crossing Borders festival of Latino plays; and developing numerous arts-education initiatives for young people including A Little Shakespeare, an annual production of one of Shakespeare’s plays performed by high-school students. He is the co-author and was the director of Two River’s musical The Ballad of Little Jo, which he wrote with composer Mike Reid and lyricist Sarah Schlesinger. Throughout his career, John has been a leading advocate for bold new American plays and stimulating productions of the classics, including the Broadway productions of Lisa Kron’s Well and Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

For 12 seasons, he worked in a variety of capacities at The Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, including Associate Producer and Associate Artistic Director. Previously, John was dramaturg at Hartford Stage Company. He also co-founded and led Affinity Company Theater, a production company dedicated to bringing daring new works from around the world to New York, and The Playwrights Realm, an off-Broadway company that produces new plays by emerging artists. He has been a Tony Award nominator, a consultant for the National Endowment for the Arts and numerous other organizations, and he has taught at New York University and Yale University.

John currently teaches in the graduate school at Columbia University. He received his BA from George Washington University and his MFA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

MICHAEL HURST (MANAGING DIRECTOR) has been the Managing Director of Two River Theater since 2011. During his tenure, Two River has embarked on a new Strategic Plan; began producing subscription shows on two stages for the first time; and launched the theater’s first commissioning program for original plays, as well as numerous new community and education programs. Under his joint leadership with Artistic Director John Dias, Two River has experienced ambitious growth and enjoyed new recognition in the national theater community. Prior experience includes 16 years at The Public Theater, including four years as General Manager and six as Managing Director, overseeing budgets that ranged from $16 to $20 million. Michael was responsible for all financial aspects of the productions at The Public Theater and Central Park’s Delacorte Theater. During his tenure at The Public, he oversaw the Broadway transfers of many productions, including Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Take Me Out, winner of the Tony Award for Best Play; and Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s Caroline, or Change. Michael was also part of all strategic planning including the opening of Joe’s Pub, now considered one of the country’s best small venues for music and performance. Prior to coming to Two River, Michael was Chief Operating Officer of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which presents the New York Film Festival. At the Film Society, he oversaw the building of a new three-theater, $40-million facility that opened in June 2011, and he managed the organizational growth necessary to support the facility. Michael served as Vice President for The Off-Broadway League and was a member of The Broadway League for 14 years. He is a graduate of Rutgers University and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Theatre Alliance and on the Advisory Board for the Indie Street Film Festival.

ROBERT M. RECHNITZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) founded Two River Theater in 1994 and serves as the theater’s Executive Producer. In 2015/16, Two River premiered his play (written with Kenneth Stunkel), Lives of Reason. An educator, writer, and director, he is one of New Jersey’s most esteemed theater leaders. He earned his PhD from the University of Colorado and was a Professor of American Literature at Monmouth University for 35 years, contributing scholarly articles and short stories to various academic journals. As Two River’s Executive Producer, he oversaw the theater’s move from Monmouth University in West Long Branch to the Algonquin Arts in Manasquan. While the company was in residence in Manasquan, he planned for and oversaw the building of Two River’s state-of-the-art, two-theater complex in Red Bank as its permanent home. He directed the opening production in the new building, the classic American comedy You Can’t Take It with You, in 2005. Among the other notable productions he has directed at Two River are Curse of the Starving Class (for which he received a nomination for Best Director of a Comedy from The Star-Ledger), True West, A View from the Bridge, The Glass Menagerie, Thieves’ Carnival, Uncle Vanya, American Buffalo, and Barefoot in the Park. Bob is an active member of a number of organizations benefiting our Monmouth Country, including serving as a Board member for several local non-profits. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, honors, commendations, and accolades.

ANNOUNCING OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY EXPANSION PROJECT

Complete Two River Theater rendering with new support building

THE CENTER FOR NEW WORK, EDUCATION AND DESIGN Two River’s home for great American theater is expanding!

We are pleased to announce that, as we approach our landmark 25th Anniversary Season in 2018/2019, we will soon break ground on an addition to our theater that will provide much-needed space to support our ambitious activities and operational needs. Our new, state-of-the-art Center for New Work, Education and Design will commemorate our stellar 25-year history and propel us forward into our next 25 years of artistic excellence and transformational educational programming.

Although we produce our subscription season on a production schedule that runs September-June, Two River operates throughout the full year. We are proud to note that, since we built our theater in 2005, our activities have helped to transform Red Bank’s west side. But today, Two River has grown beyond the boundaries of our physical space, both in our filled-to-capacity administration offices and in our 24

production facility, the Chavant Building, which is located across our parking lot and is where we currently create scenery and props, and store costumes.

The new Center for New Work, Education and Design, which will have three floors and will be connected to our theater, was designed by Red Bank architects Kaplan, Gaunt + DeSantis.

It will include two rehearsal studios; expanded scene shop spaces; a formal wood shop for the props department; a larger costume shop; centrally located offices for our Production and Education staffs; and multiple storage areas.

In addition to supporting better communication and productivity among the technicians and artisans of our Production department, the Center will allow us to expand the reach and impact of our Education programs, new-play development activities, and the many free community events we offer through our “Inside Two River” program.

Some of the benefits to our theater staff, audiences, artists and larger community include the following: n The facility will offer a range of spaces that will allow for more resources dedicated to new-play development, including offices and writing spaces for playwrights, lyricists and composers. We’ll also be able to offer more retreats, readings and workshops, many of which will be open to the public. n The two rehearsal studios in the new building will allow us to greatly develop and build our annual Education programs, including our Summer Theater Intensives and First Monday Masters, series of master classes taught by great artists who are working at the theater. n Popular events that currently have capacity limitations—such as 101 lecture series, led by Artistic Director John Dias—will be able to reach more patrons in the new building. We will also be able to introduce new audience-engagement activities that take audiences literally “behind the scenes” and allow access to the production process, such as the construction of a set. n The new scene shop ceiling heights of 32 feet will allow us to “mock up” scenery before we load it into the theater; we’ll also have the space to test automated scenic pieces prior to load-in.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TIMELINE: Some site preparation and construction will begin this May, after the close of Dancing at Lughnasa. Major construction will begin in July, after the close of Songbird.

Construction will continue through our 2018/19 Season with scheduled completion in late summer of 2019.

PARKING: On-site parking will be limited to handicap spots.

After 11am, free parking can be found at the Red Bank Train Station and at the garage at Pazzo restaurant (enter on West Front Street or Water Street). Metered parking is available along the side of our building on Bridge Avenue and around the corner along Monmouth Street.

In Dancing at Lughnasa, Ireland and Irish society is as strong a character in Brian Friel’s play as any of the Mundys. That’s why for this production we’ve partnered with our friends at Excel Travel, including Ireland Travel Expert Mickey Brewster, and CIE Tours International to share with you some valuable information on how to book a trip of your own to the Emerald Isle.

DAY 1:

Arrive in Dublin & City Sightseeing

Welcome to Dublin, Ireland’s biggest city and its capital! Today you can explore Dublin independently using your open-top hop-on-hop-off bus tour voucher to visit one of Dublin’s top attractions: Guinness Storehouse, Teeling Distillery, EPIC Ireland, or the General Post Office Museum.

DAY 2:

Dublin & Merry Ploughboy Pub

Pause for a stroll around Sneem, with its brightly painted houses, and take a moment at Moll’s Gap to enjoy panoramic views of Ireland’s highest mountains and deep valleys. Get a taste of farm life with a sheepdog demonstration of herding flocks, and see different breeds of sheep. Return to Killarney to find a perfect dinner spot, perhaps at one of the many pubs in town.

DAY 5:

Cliffs of Moher & Medieval Castle Banquet

Enjoy the morning exploring Dublin with the included vouchers.

Meet a local guide for a tour of ancient and modern Dublin. Drive through the main streets to see historic buildings such as Trinity College, where the Book of Kells is housed; rows of Georgian houses with colorfully painted doorways; and the new buildings around the Financial Centre beside the River Liffey. Take a guided tour through parts of Dublin Castle, which was the seat of power and government for many centuries and today plays a leading role in the European Union. In the evening head to the Merry Ploughboy Pub for a great dinner of Irish specialties and a lively show with popular Irish songs and intricate step-dancing.

Leave Killarney and drive north to Tarbert for a 20-minute ferry ride across the wide River Shannon Estuary. Continue along the coast of County Clare to the Cliffs of Moher, a spectacular wall of sandstone that reaches almost 700 feet above the Atlantic Ocean.

Drive past Lahinch Golf Course, one of Ireland’s most famous golfing destinations, and through the marketing town of Ennis to Bunratty. Check into Bunratty Castle Hotel, which is located close to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. In the evening head to Bunratty or Knappogue Castle and take your place in the Great Hall for a medieval-style feast of excellent dishes and plenty of wine. During and after the meal the lords and ladies will serenade you with song and harp music evocative of the Middle Ages.

Depart Dublin and travel through the gorgeous landscapes and varied farmlands of the midlands of Ireland. Stop for photos of the stately ruins on the Rock of Cashel, rising high above the surrounding plain. Continue your drive south and, just a few miles outside Cork, visit Blarney Castle to kiss the famous “Stone of Eloquence.” Visit the Blarney Woollen Mills where you can find quality Irish-made goods of all types, displayed under one roof. Drive through Macroom, a market town built around a fine castle, and into County Kerry where the scenery becomes more mountainous. Arrive in Killarney, picturesquely set beside lakes with the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Ireland’s highest mountains, forming a backdrop.

Drive north to Galway city for a panoramic tour, and take some time to look around the city before traveling out along the famous Galway Bay to Spiddal, where the locals still speak the Irish language. Then drive across the rugged boglands of Connemara to Moycullen to visit the Connemara Marble Factory. See how locally quarried marble is made into attractive products, and enjoy tea and some much less rock-like scones. Travel across the country back to Dublin, for a final evening to explore the pubs in the lively Temple Bar area, or experience one of Dublin’s fine restaurants.

Ring of Kerry & Skellig Experience

Today embark on Ireland’s most popular scenic drive of 100 miles – the Ring of Kerry. This winding route reveals breathtaking views of Macgillycuddy’s Reeks as well as the scenic coast of beaches and cliffs. As you travel along, make plenty of stops for photos at the best vantage points. Cross to Valentia Island by bridge where you’ll visit the the off-shore island of Skellig Michael. Learn about this breathtaking and isolated (but puffin-filled) island, where early Christian monks lived in austere conditions and how it was more recently used as a refuge for Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker in the 2017 film Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Depart from Dublin

n BACKSTAGE, ONSTAGE, AND BEYOND! The program offers two tracks: actors, dancers, and singers can try out the onstage track, led by a professional Director and Musical Director. Designers, technicians, and stage crew can join the backstage track, led by a professional Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director. Guest teaching artists will jump in with both tracks, to help and give guidance and inspiration! n TAKE WHAT YOU LOVE, AND PUT IT ON STAGE. What inspires you? What’s moving you? What’s the soundtrack to your day? The answers to these questions will shape the show you create. Each week is guided by a different theme, and the young artists will work together to shape their own performance, rehearse it all week, and perform it that Friday on the Rechnitz stage. n A PROFESSIONAL THEATER EXPERIENCE UNLIKE ANY OTHER. For middle and high school students who’re looking ahead to a possible career in professional theater, this program is designed to give them a true taste of the theater-making process. And for students who are interested in trying something new, this program will offer fun challenges and different skills! In addition to working with acclaimed theater professionals acting as guidesand mentors, participants will gain invaluable experience in all the ins and outs of creating and presenting a performance, from costume and set design to writing and performing. The tools gained over the Summer Intensive program will help them throughout their incredible future career, whatever it may be! n TAKE ONE WEEK, OR TRY ALL THREE! Every week is a different experience and a different show! Participants can try the onstage track for one week, and then switch to backstage for the next, and vice versa! Or just do one track all the way through, and really hone your prop making or jazz hand skills!

The Two River Theater summer offerings are getting a revamp this year, with the brand-new addition of Summer Intensives, a set of three week-long programs in July 2018 for young theater lovers and theater makers in grades 7 to 12.

Summer Intensives run from July 9–13, July 16–20, and July 23–27, for grades 7–9 and grades 10–12. The program runs Monday through Friday, from 9am to 4pm.

Pricing is $475 for one week, $855 for 2 weeks (10% discount), and $1211.25 for 3 weeks (15% discount).

One of the seminal plays in theater history, Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull examines the dreams—and the darkness behind those dreams—of a group of artists in the turnof-the-century Russian countryside. To end our season, Two River is excited to bring our audience a new musical adaptation, Songbird, which drops Chekhov’s play into a Nashville bar, where some country music dreams are realized, while others languish on the shelf next to the whiskey.

The musical opens as fading country-music superstar, Tammy Trip, returns home to Nashville (and the honkey-tonk that launched her career decades before) to help her son launch his own music career. But will her arrival do more harm than good? Dreams, ambition, love, and heartbreak all collide in this acclaimed new musical, written by playwright Michael Kimmel (The Last Goodbye), with a score that blends folk, bluegrass, and popcountry written by singer/songwriter Lauren Pritchard, who originated the role of “Ilse” in the original production of the Broadway smash Spring Awakening. Gaye Taylor Upchurch directs the 10-person cast.

Songbird premiered Off-Broadway in 2015 to much critical acclaim, earning a New York Times Critic’s Pick.

To offer them a break for a few days, so the most important question is not how to pay for their next medical bill, but whether to play bingo, get a massage or sing Karaoke.

OUR CONCEPT IS SIMPLE: • We organize various local fundraisers • We help people organize their own fundraisers so they can support a specific individual or family • We offer people a great cruise at a reduced price, and the more (paying) passengers we can book, the more people we can sponsor to travel for free!

BELMAR ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

On Sunday, March 4th, several Two River staff members hit the streets in Belmar to participate in their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Donning festive attire, the staff kicked off our Irish celebrations early by marching with an official Dancing at Lughnasa show art banner.

GET JIGGING WITH US: IRISH STEP DANCING NIGHT On Thursday, March 22nd, Two River hosted an Irish step dancing night in its lobby. Partnering with the Jig Factory Irish Dance School of Atlantic Highlands, students performed a variety of traditional Irish dance numbers and later taught attendees a series of dance steps.

After the dance performance and lesson, guests enjoyed fresh scones from West Side Eatery and live music by The Kilkenny Cats trio.
