We create great American theater by developing and producing new works and world classics that most richly direct our gaze to the life of the human spirit. We cultivate an audience that cherishes the intimate joy of theater, enriched when shared by a community of others.
To be a theater whose work contributes to the canon of world theater and is a vital cultural resource for our community.
THE LAND UPON WHICH WE GATHER IS PART OF THE TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF THE LENNI-LENAPE, CALLED “LENAPEHOKING.”
Two River Theater wishes to acknowledge the LenniLenape as the original people of this unceded land where we proudly present our work and strive to be a vital cultural resource for our community.
ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE
We nurture and challenge the visions of adventurous theater artists. Our commitment to the artistic process is sustained over time through an investment in people, their creative process, and our dedication to the highest artistic standards.
EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
We make our theater a welcoming resource for all. We create engagement programs and partnerships that encourage all voices to come together in conversation around the stories we tell. We invest in the next generation of artists and audiences by introducing students and lifelong learners to the possibility and adventure that theater brings to our lives.
EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
We believe that the essence of theater is democratic: it invites us to encounter, consider and perhaps adopt other points of view, if only for a brief time in a darkened theater. We aspire to build an environment in which artists, audiences, employees, and Board members from di erent backgrounds and experiences together form an institution that is equitable, diverse, and inclusive.
OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
We dedicate ourselves to the highest standards in our governance, management, operational, and financial practices. We are committed to developing and retaining an experienced and accomplished sta , an engaged and informed Board of Trustees, and a working environment that attracts sta , volunteers, and artists of the highest caliber.

The 2024/25 season was a year of dynamic exploration of our mission: the investigation of the human condition and our connection to one another. It was a deep gaze inward—toward our souls. Across every inch of our work’s footprint—from rehearsal rooms to the stage, from our plaza to classrooms, and, new this year, into the spaces of fellow nonprofit partners—we worked boldly, embraced creativity, and rea irmed why live theater remains such a powerful force in our lives and communities.
This season, we witnessed tenderness and care through Mariachi music in American Mariachi; pulse-pounding pursuit of truth in Dial M for Murder; a profound family origin story in ¡VOS!; and an intimate reckoning of The Price These productions transported audiences across genres, generations, and perspectives. Alongside this work, we sustained a remarkable level of artistic activity by supporting new stories through residencies, workshops, readings, and our annual Crossing Borders (Cruzando Fronteras) Festival, now renamed ¡Festejo!
Education and community engagement remained at the heart of all we do. Through student matinees, sensory-inclusive performances, and immersive programs like the Howard Aronson Metro Scholars and A Little Shakespeare: The Tempest, we invited learners of all ages into the creative fold. This year also marked an important step forward with the launch of our Community Playmaking program, expanding opportunities for collaboration and storytelling with nonprofit partners throughout Monmouth County.
As we look ahead, we do so with deep gratitude for the artists, audiences, and supporters who made this season possible—and with great excitement for all that lies ahead.
With appreciation,

In Fiscal Year 2025, we remained focused on responsible stewardship while investing in the artistic work and community impact that define our mission. The majority of our revenue came from contributed sources, reflecting the continued generosity of individual donors, foundations, corporate and government partners, and the strategic use of previously restricted funds to support operations. Earned income from ticket sales, subscriptions, events, and other activities also played an important role in sustaining our work.
Our expenses continued to be missioncentered, with most resources dedicated directly to program services including theatrical productions and education initiatives. Supporting costs in administration and fundraising helped provide the structure and capacity needed to operate e ectively and support future growth.

The 2024/25 season was defined by its momentum: by the strength of artists gathering to create and the force that stories gather at every stage of development. Across residencies, workshops, readings, and festivals, Two River Theater served as a creative home where writers, composers, directors, and performers came together to experiment and collaborate, pushing new work forward with care.
In July 2024, after a five-year hiatus, Two River welcomed back a writers’ group from Clubbed Thumb for a week-long residency. Playwrights Liza Birkenmeier, Bailey Williams, T. Adamson, Johnny G. Lloyd, and Talene Monahon spent the week crafting and sharing their
work, all while enjoying a bit of summer along the Navesink.
That same summer, we hosted Sandy Rustin (Broadway’s The Cottage) and Grammy Award–winner Edie Brickell to work on an early draft of their new musical, Almost Like a Dance, directed by Josh Rhodes (Bright Star).
The 13th Annual Crossing Borders (Cruzando Fronteras) Festival returned in August 2024, continuing its legacy as a vital platform for bold voices and expansive storytelling. Throughout the four-day festival, audiences got to see readings by playwrights Matthew Paul Olmos (that drive thru monterey, directed by Ti any

Nichole Green), Iraisa Ann Reilly (Saturday Mourning Cartoons, directed by José Zayas), Juan José Alfonso (The Ice Bath, directed by Tatiana Pandiani), and Bernardo Cubría (The Hispanic/Latino/ Latina/Latinx/Latine Vote!, directed by José Zayas). The festival also featured a special concert performance by Flaco Navajo & The Razorblades.
In September 2024, Two River once again teamed up with Lively McCabe Theatricals to produce a reading in NYC of the new musical Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, based on the hit film. Featuring a score packed with iconic 1980s songs, the musical was directed by Jennifer Cannizzaro (The Book of Mormon),

with a book by Lauren Marcus (Be More Chill, Love in Hate Nation), and M. Dickson (Hoops on Netflix).
The fall continued with two more major developmental workshops. In October 2024, Two River, in association with SallyCade Holmes, produced a workshop in NYC of the new musical Cowboy Bob, based on the true story of American bank robber Peggy Jo Tallas. With music and lyrics by Jeanna Phillips, a book by Molly Beach Murphy, and direction by Annie Tippe (The Hombres), the workshop featured a cast of nine actors, a four-piece band, and a full creative team working collaboratively to shape this exciting new story.
In November 2024, in association with Martian Productions, Two River produced a workshop of Loch Ness, an inventive and theatrical musical exploring love and loss through a rousing Celtic score. The book was written by A.D. Penedo, Sandy Rustin (The Cottage), and Marshall Pailet (Middle School Mysteries), with direction by Pailet.
Spring 2025 brought a renewed focus on commissioned work. In April, we produced a one-day table read of Vidas Privadas, a Two Rivercommissioned play by Christina Pumariega (¡VOS!). This was followed by a three-day workshop of Alex Lin’s (Chinese Republicans) hilarious and zany Two Rivercommissioned play Constance, His
Wife, directed by Iris McLaughlin (Clubbed Thumb’s Winterworks).
The season concluded in June 2025 with a workshop of another Two River commission, The Monsters, welcoming back playwright and director Ngozi Anyanwu, choreographer Rickey Tripp, and MMA expert Sijara “SarJ” Eubanks. This phase of development focused on the piece’s movement and exploring how MMA techniques could be translated into theatrical language for the stage.
Two River remains proud to serve as a creative home for artists and is excited to support the development of new stories in the seasons ahead.
Planning a season is like putting together a great dinner party.
For Two River’s 2024/25 Season, we journeyed from the joyous founding of an all-female mariachi band to a poetic enchanted isle to a deft and stylish fresh take on a beloved Hitchcock thriller to a stunning World Premiere debut to the towering work of a theatrical giant.
It was a meal that aimed to nourish the spirit with music, laughter, taut mysteries, and profound questions.
It was our great pleasure to welcome you — our wonderfully diverse community — to join us for this theatrical feast. For theater is an open table where all are welcome and it is Two River’s great joy to bring people together.

The 2024/25 season opened with American Mariachi, a moving, music-filled comedy by José Cruz González. When Lucha dreams of starting an all-female mariachi band, she and her cousin Boli set out to challenge tradition — despite having no instruments, no experience, and little support. Directed by James Vásquez (2023/24 season’s Hair), the production overflowed with humor and heart, as both musicians and actors filled the theater with vibrant live mariachi music.

This abridged production of The Tempest, directed and adapted by Noelle Marion, marked the 12th season of Two River Theater’s A Little Shakespeare program. The production brought the magic of Prospero’s island to life for young performers and audiences alike, featuring high school students in both performance and technical roles under the guidance of professional theater artists. While the program remains free for all interested students, additional financial support allows participants from across New Jersey to join by eliminating transportation and other barriers. As one A Little Shakespeare student shared, “This opportunity to work with Two River has been one of the most valuable learning experiences I’ve had as an artist. I can’t wait to take everything I’ve learned here into my professional career.”

Student Matinee performances remain the cornerstone of Two River’s education programming, welcoming students and educators from across the region to experience live, professional theater. The program incorporates grade-level curriculum, workshops, and post-show discussions with the show’s cast. During the 2024/25 season, Two River served 1,515 students and teachers across 37 schools and 8 counties through Student Matinee performances.
Through the Have a SEAT (Student/Engagement/ Access/Theater) program, nearly half (48%) of all Student Matinee attendees received free admission, transportation, and workshops, removing financial and logistical barriers for schools facing systemic inequities.
In July, Two River offered two weeks of Summer Intensives, welcoming middle and high school students into an immersive, fast-paced theater-making experience. Working alongside professional teaching artists, students collaborated across onstage and backstage tracks to create and present two original productions in just five days.

Alongside the Intensives, Two River o ered Pro Series classes designed for students seeking focused, skillbased training. These courses provided smaller cohorts with professional instruction in areas such as vocal auditions, scene study, and stage combat.
Together, the Summer Intensives and Pro Series programming served 240 students and audience members during the 2024/25 season.
The ART of Social Justice, o ered in collaboration with Project Write Now and the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, provides professional development for educators with a series of workshops that explore social justice through the lenses of history, theater, and reflective writing. Workshops were held in October, February and April, serving 24 educators. Participants consistently described the experience as transformative, with one educator sharing, “It gave me a new confidence and fire to move forward.”

The Howard Aronson Metro Scholars program is a highly competitive audition- and interview-based program, o ering a year-long, immersive experience in professional theater for high school juniors from across New Jersey. Since its inception in 2005, 237 students have completed the program.
The 2024/25 class marked a milestone as the program’s 20th class, with 15 students from ten schools in three counties participating in performances, backstage experiences, and a series of hands-on workshops designed to deepen their understanding of theater careers. Highlights included Playwriting with Christina Pumariega, Casting, Fundraising, Costuming, and more, as well as set tours and discussions on Two Rivers’ subscription series. Participation in Metro Scholars remains entirely free to students, with travel assistance provided.

Launched in 2024 in partnership with the Count Basie Center for the Arts, the inaugural Bilingual Workforce Development Program expanded paid arts training opportunities for Spanish speakers in Monmouth County.
During its pilot year, the program served six area students, providing training in job readiness, financial literacy, CPR certification, and frontof-house operations at both Two River and the Basie Center. Through handson experience, professional mentorship, and behind-the-scenes exposure, participants gained valuable insight into guiding audiences through the live theater experience while building meaningful pathways into the arts and service industries.
Two River’s Emerging Professionals program remains a vital careerdevelopment opportunity for earlycareer theater artists and recent graduates. Participants receive fulltime employment, free housing, and 100% employer-paid health benefits while gaining hands-on experience in large-scale regional theater operations. Working alongside Two River sta and visiting artists, participants build practical skills and professional networks at a pivotal moment as they begin their careers in the field.
The 2024/25 Emerging Professionals cohort included Tevin Berry (Lighting Assistant), Paula Ciko (Sound & Lighting Assistant), Gwen Flowers (Production Management Assistant), Jessi Stier (Artistic Assistant), Alycya Thomas (Production Assistant), Tomas Torres (Props Assistant), and CJ Woodard (Costume Assistant).

DURING THE 2024/25 SEASON, TWO RIVER OFFERED A ROBUST MIX OF NEW AND RETURNING COMMUNITY PROGRAMS, WELCOMING COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND PARTNERS INTO SHARED EXPERIENCES THAT EXTENDED BEYOND OUR STAGES.
This season, Two River launched Community Playmaking, a new program created in partnership with Project Write Now Open to adults from diverse and underserved communities, Community Playmaking requires no prior theatrical experience, only a desire to learn, create, and share stories. Through a series of free playwriting workshops, participants are guided by teaching artists to develop original short plays that culminate in a staged reading performed by professional actors.
During the program’s first year, Two River partenered with Lunch Break in Red Bank and Shore House in Long Branch

Two River continued its commitment to celebrating and uplifting LGBTQ+ voices through a range of programming throughout the season. Pride on the Plaza returned as a joyful, high-energy celebration featuring drag performances, music, and community gathering, all in support of love, liberation, and visibility.
New this season, Pride Nights invited audiences to gather around mainstage performances with pre-show events designed to foster connection and celebration.

Throughout the 2024/25 season, Two River Theater continued to bring people together through community-centered gatherings, conversations, and events that created space for dialogue, reflection, celebration, and shared learning.
In December 2024, Two River hosted its Holiday Community Celebration, a free, family-friendly gathering that brought neighbors and 21 community partners together to celebrate the season. Held throughout the theater and on the outdoor Plaza, the event featured live music performances from Monmouth Civic Chorus and Jazz Arts, local artisans and vendors, crafts and activities for children, and festive treats like hot cocoa.

In June 2025, we welcomed back Kevin Powell and Evangeline Lawson, directors of the documentary When We Free the World, for a free screening as part of our Juneteenth Celebration

In the Know, Two River’s ongoing series of free public conversations continued throughout the season under the leadership of Artistic Director Justin Waldman. Guests included American Mariachi Director James Vasquez, Dial M for Murder Director Jenn Thompson, ¡VOS! Director Nicole A. Watson, and The Price Director Brandon J. Dirden
Access remained central to Two River’s mission throughout the season, guiding how we design programs and welcome audiences into our spaces. Across our education and community engagement initiatives, we continued to prioritize inclusion, a ordability, and flexibility.
Two River continued its Pay-What-You-Want initiative, o ering select performances at flexible price points to reduce financial barriers and invite broader community participation. We expanded our Sensory Inclusive Performances, o ering redesigned performances for two productions, reaching 135 patrons
Through our Play Dates program, o ered in partnership with Monmouth Day Care Center, Two River continued to address childcare as a barrier to theatergoing.
