INTERVIEW Ray Chen of TWOPAGES: Five Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Became A CEO

ay Chen is the founder and CEO of TWOPAGES, a global home décor brand specializing in premium, customizable window treatments. His journey began after a frustrating experience ordering curtains for his first home, where confusing pricing for custom sizes inspired him to simplify the process. He launched TWOPAGES a few years later to make high-quality, made-to-measure curtains as easy to order as choosing from a menu. Today, the brand offers 897 fabrics, 35 curated collections, and has outfitted over 600,000 households through its website and Amazon.

hank you so much for joining us in this interT view series! Before we dig in, our readers would like to get to know you a bit more. Can you tell us a bit about your "backstory"? What led you to this particular career path?

I began my career in 2002, focusing on supply chain management and sales in the home goods sector between China and the United States. In 2008, I was purchasing fabric curtains for my new home and experienced dishonest business practices—hidden costs, unclear pricing, and a lack of transparency before payment. That experience opened my eyes to a major pain point in the market. It inspired me to build something different—a business driven by integrity, innovation, and trust, using new models, technologies, and methods to truly serve our customers better.

an you share the most interesting story that C happened to you since you began leading your company? In the early stage of my entrepreneurial journey, our company started with just two people. We didn't have a dedicated customer service team, so I took on that role myself. I didn't want customers to realize how small our company was at that time, so I even created another name to communicate with them. Sometimes, when I accidentally introduced myself with my real name over the phone, I couldn't help but laugh. Talking with customers became one of the most meaningful parts of my work. I listened carefully to their needs. Even when I couldn't fulfill every request, I valued those conversations deeply. Through these exchanges, I gained new perspectives and insights. Hearing directly from end customers was genuinely exciting for me, especially when their feedback challenged the conventional market assumptions. That's when I realized that there's a huge gap between the current market and customers' expectations.

eadership often entails making difficult deciL sions or hard choices between two apparently good paths. Can you share a story with us about a hard decision or choice you had to make as a leader?

At one point, we faced a crucial decision — whether to remain a seller or to evolve into a brand. It’ s a story of courage, growth, and the will to keep learning. In the beginning, we started as Amazon sellers. As sellers, all we needed was to focus on products and inventory management. Traffic and brand building were not concerns. But building a brand meant taking full ownership of everything: from front-end marketing, branding, and customer experience to back-end supply chain, logistics, and product innovation. Each of these areas required us to learn, adapt, and grow beyond our comfort zone. It was both a challenge and a transformation of mindset. To me, building genuine relationships with customers has always been one of the most constructive and meaningful parts of the journey. Sustainable competitiveness is built upon a deep and defensible moat. Guided by long-term thinking, we believe that slow is fast and that every decision should begin with the end in mind. Our goal is to understand our customers profoundly and consistently deliver beyond their expectations.

hat is the most striking difference between your W actual job and how you thought the job would be? Honestly, the most striking difference is how much more fulfilling the job turned out to be than I had expected. I knew I would enjoy the work, but I didn’ t realize how rewarding it would feel to see everyone in the organization grow and thrive.

an you share a story about the funniest mistake C you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that? In the early stage of our business, we pursued growth by following the same path as many other companies — investing heavily in inventory to boost sales. However, we soon realized that the higher the sales, the greater the demand for cash flow and inventory management. Our SKUs multiplied quickly, requiring increasingly refined operational control. Eventually, we decided to pivot back to personalized, customized products. That experience taught me that the real foundation of a business is not just revenue, but cash flow management. It reminded us to channel our limited resources into what truly differentiates us — building a strong, trustworthy brand. Anyone can increase inventory, but very few can build a brand that endures.

e are very blessed that some very prominent W names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a

person in the world, or in the US with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this if we tag them. There’s no one else I long to meet. The only person I truly wish to meet is my awakened self. As the Eastern philosopher Wang Yangming once said, “All things I need are already within me.” True wisdom and power are not something we capture from the outside but something we need to awaken from within. My entrepreneurial journey has taught me that there is no external savior. The path of building something is filled with both hope and joy. In the past, I used to say my dreams woke me up every morning. But now, I’ m growing into a better version of myself — one who wants to become the sun that lights the way for others. Today, it’ s no longer my dreams that wake me; it’ s me who wakes my dreams.
