what a long, strange trip it has been. If ever there was a time to herald and support small businesses, this is it. And so it is in this vein that we ask you to support your favorite Denville businesses. During this holiday season, take a walk down Broadway and pop into our unique shops and enjoy a cocktail with friends. Stop into the restaurants on Route 53, 46, and 10 for a delicious and memorable bite to eat. Give the gift of health by patronizing the gyms and fitness studios. Give an experience gift by supporting the local dance, art or music studios. Patronize your favorite businesses, discover new-to-you places, and support the community that supports you. In this issue, we dove into chili and highlighted how you can enjoy global cuisine without ever leaving town.

Angela Osorio, her husband Chris, and their Floriography shop have brought beauty to Broadway since it opened. Whether it's providing beautiful arrangements for small and large events, catering to walk-in clientele, or holding classes in her shop, she is a welcome addition to our downtown community.
What is the story behind Floriography? I grew up seeing beautiful flowers everywhere appreciating the colors and the smell of them. After I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Studio Arts from Fairleigh Dickinson University, I had the purpose to create my own business and become an entrepreneur. I started from my one bedroom apartment and then moved into my parents’ garage. Then after, I saw the business was launching and growing with beautiful weddings and events. Then I rented the barn on Route 46 in Rockaway, and that has been our location for 11 years. Today it is our studio and warehouse. Has your background and career always been focused on flowers? I have a background in studio arts, painting, sculpting, color theory, and interior design. I have had the pleasure to blend the science of art with the Floral Design artistry. How did you choose Denville as the place to open up your shop? It was easy, Denville got to our heart and we fell in love with Denville. When Chris, my husband, and I were dating, we always
dreamed about having a business in this beautiful town! The people in the town, the music playing, the atmosphere and the beauty of the town is one of a kind, and represents the essence of small town America. We wanted to have our business here in Denville for that and a thousand reasons more! What is your favorite part about being downtown? The people in Denville. They are always walking, shopping, enjoying life with their families, friends and their pets. The unique shops, restaurants and environment makes downtown Denville a one of a kind experience for our residents and visitors from other towns. Denville is an example to follow. How have you pivoted your business and services during the pandemic? We have learned a lot during the pandemic. We turned it around into positive since our core was weddings and events. Since we were not able to produce them as much, we opened our beautiful boutique to the public. It has been a pleasure to create for everyday floral design, meeting the people of Denville, and creating for their birthdays, home deliveries, and showing them our beautiful silk collection of florals. We enjoy creating floral arrangements with our people in Denville!

CHILI There is something special about ladling chili into deep bowls and adding your favorite toppings, and the cold winter months are the perfect time for that. There are a number of Denville eateries dishing up their own unique take on chili, and we grabbed a few to sample.

The Turkey Chili from Panera has the foundation of a traditional chili, with the unique additions of chick peas, edamame, and carrots. With the ancho stock as a base, it has underlying heat. Served with your choice of bread, apple, or chips. Go for the bread—it’s the perfect scooper or mopper for that chili goodness.

The Thatcher’s Chili is stick-to-your-ribs goodness topped with a thick chunk of cheddar and diced red onions. Served with a handful of thin and crispy tortilla chips, this hearty basic will warm you up from the inside out. Add their delicious Goat Cheese Salad for the perfectly balanced meal.

How could we pass up the Chili Cheese Fries at Weenies? Spoiler alert, we couldn’t. Weenies fries are the perfect first layer, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and nice and thick. We loved this chili because it was completely stripped down and just focused on the meat. Paired with warm melty cheese it was pure heaven.

There is no question that the pandemic has had a drastic impact on small businesses everywhere. While they are handling many challenges and uncertainty, you can help. They compete for your attention amongst a crowded space of online retailers, brick-and-mortar shops, and malls but they bring much more to the table for you. Denville business owners are there day in and day out, know your name, your order, and will ask about your kids. This personal touch is the cornerstone to a small business owner’s success, and what sets them apart from their big box competitors. While the feelings of isolation and stress during the pandemic are real for everyone, that may be over in a few months. But for many business owners, this is a "make or break" time and could very well be the difference between staying open or closing for good. The easiest way for you to decide what the community you live in looks like is to continue to actively support it, so get out there and support your local businesses.
How can you support the local businesses in town? • Shop and dine there, make the local spots your first choice • Refer them when people are asking for recommendations • Leave them a review on Facebook, Google, or Yelp • "Like" their Facebook page and follow them on Instagram • Comment, like, and share their social media posts • Shop local online—many offer online ordering and local delivery • Tip, tip, tip. Your favorite delivery drivers, waiters, servers, and baristas are working less hours, therefore getting less money • Say "Thank you."
