Welcome to the 2020 Denville Guide. We publish this annual Guide to celebrate our community and everything it has to offer. Use it as a go-to resource throughout the entire year.

Denville is an ordinary community filled with extraordinary people. Denville is a vibrant town that celebrates many holidays and events, our very enthusiastic and giving community, and the everyday. Joey Bella fundraising events, Restaurant Week, the Denville Rotary Street Festival, and Pink Witches Night Out are just a few annual events that Denville plans to bring the community together and to continue to attract outside visitors to our town. We hope this Guide will continue to serve as a resource that you will find helpful and refer to all year long. See you around town!

THE URBAN MUSE DAY SPA

“LIFE MOVES PRETTY FAST. IF YOU DON’T STOP AND LOOK AROUND ONCE IN AWHILE, YOU COULD MISS IT.” 6 // @twogirlsmedia | twogirlsmedia.com

That popular Ferris Bueller quote can sum up the Denville landscape quite perfectly…both the literal landscape of nature, and the retail landscape and community as a whole. Since the last issue of our annual Guide, we have welcomed Corrado’s, Trader Joe’s, Bishops, myCBD Organics, Derma Design Atelier, Brushed Tanning Studio, and Bubble in Paradise to name a few. Bensi and California Beach Hut moved to new locations in town, and we are all enjoying the

Veteran’s Memorial Field has had a facelift with the addition of a new scoreboard, bleachers, and sound system, and the downtown streetscaping projects have continued down First Avenue with a generous grant. The Urban Muse Day Spa & Gift Shop did a major renovation to include

halotherapy sessions in their new salt room and an infrared sauna, and our school district is in the process of making significant changes to accommodate the growing student population. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but rather just a few highlights. Denville continues to evolve, change, and get better year after year.

THE LOCALS

So much of Denville’s vibrant community is made up of individuals that exemplify the true spirit of what Denville is all about, and we’d love to introduce you to three of them.

THOMAS DEAN Co-Owner of Norman Dean Home for Services What is something unique that people should know about Denville? Denville has a lot of history as it developed into somewhat of a resort community, from when Father Joch came to Denville to use the Rockaway River for water treatments for people with certain conditions. Later developers came to Denville and created the many lake communities in town for summer vacationers. What is one of your favorite things about working in Denville? As the owner of a family funeral home my parents started in 1957, I have gotten to know many families. Denville has a unique way of blending these families into becoming good friends and even extended families. What is the best thing to do in town on your day off? Denville has a walkable downtown, and the merchants are very friendly, so to wander around and shop is enjoyable. There are also many parks in the area, like the Tourne Park as well as Jonathan’s Woods. Another hidden gem is the Rockaway River. To spend an afternoon canoeing, kayaking, or even rafting can take you away to another world. 8 // @twogirlsmedia | twogirlsmedia.com

SEE + DO

PASTOR HEATHER VALOSIN Pastor of Denville Community Church, “The Church of the Open Door” What is something unique that people should know about Denville? Denville has an interfaith clergy group that meets throughout the year. Besides planning an Interfaith Thanksgiving Gathering, we enjoy the opportunity to learn more about each other’s theologies and spiritual practices. What is one of your favorite things about working in Denville? One of my favorite things about being a pastor in Denville is the generosity of this community. When we hear of a need, people here are eager to respond. This kindness extends beyond our town limits, from Newark to Appalachia, even to Africa. What is the best thing to do in town on your day off? There are two round swings on the new Gardner Field playground that they didn’t have when I was a child. I love to lay back and swing on those while the kids play. JOE AGUANNO Co-Owner of Denville Seafood & Codmother’s Cafe What is something unique that people should know about Denville? The community spirit and how it comes together when someone needs help. What is one of your favorite things about working in Denville? The people and our customers, to be honest. They are nice, friendly, and giving people and make it a joy to come to work. What is the best thing to do in town on your day off? Going out for lunch on Mondays, when we’re closed. We visit one of our three favorite restaurants, either Café Metro, Carver’s, or Veggie Heaven. 2020 DENVILLE GUIDE // 9

OF

Denville is a town steeped in history, and the Morris County Heritage Commission has identified eight historical highlights:

SAINT FRANCIS RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY When the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother purchased the farm on Pocono Road in 1895, they started making significant changes, beginning with turning the property’s original mansion into a chapel. A year later, they cemented their worldwide reputation by establishing a health resort that later became know as the Franciscan Oaks.

e ll i v Den KITCHEL HOUSE The Kitchel House on the corner of Ford and Kitchell roads was built in 1770 and the original owner, Abraham Kitchel, Jr., was a New Jersey legislator and Morris County judge.

E. C. PEER GENERAL STORE La Cucina was more commonly known as the E. C. Peer General Store in the late 1800s, and was the go-to spot for canal boatmen to stop in for food and supplies.

PETER COOK HOUSE Peter Cook, who established the Reformed Dutch Church in Parsippany, was an early settler in the Rockaway Valley with his Dutch colonial stone home circa 1778. A wing was added in 1808, and the structure remains one of the best preserved homes in town.

SECOND UNION SCHOOL The Union Hill neighborhood is home to the historic second Union School (the first was destroyed by arson in 1860 and the community rallied to rebuild the current structure). The third Union School opened in 1908, when the second one closed.

AYRES-KNUTH FARM The Ayres-Knuth Farm on Cooper Road has operated since 1803, where corn and rye were grown, and apples harvested. Largely operated by the Ayres (1803-1896) and Knuth (1906-1996) families, the farm was bought by the township in 1996 to preserve as open space.

LAKE COMMUNITIES Developers created man-made lakes between 1890 and 1925 to give people an escape from their city life. The lake communities operated as summer resort areas with the bungalows and log cabins until they eventually became used year-round.

JACOB FORD HOUSE This circa 1750 house, believed to be built by Colonel Jacob Ford Sr., is situated near the dam of Lake Openaki. The area included a mill and a tavern, the latter of which served as a school on its second floor.

From tween gift ideas and trendy jewelry to high end home decor and pet accessories, the various Denville shopping areas have you covered. With the town’s shopping largely segmented into four distinct areas (downtown, Route 10, Route 53, and Route 46), you can easily wile away your time shopping from one end of town to the other. Whether you have a list of gifts to procure or a less enjoyable Honey Do list, you’ll find what you need amongst our mix of independently owned and operated shops and large brick-and-mortar chain stores. DOWNTOWN DISTRICT There is something palpable about the energy in the air while shopping in Denville’s downtown.

good mood. With plenty of free parking on Broadway, Diamond Spring Road, and Bloomfield and First Avenues, the shopping area is convenient and accessible with a variety of merchants. First Avenue has recently been updated with new brick pavers and street lights, as has the parking lot on the corner of First Avenue and Diamond Spring Road. SHOPPES AT UNION HILL This shopping area has had a major shift recently as several new retailers have been added to their

directory line-up. Bensi relocated to the Denville Commons strip, while Trader Joe’s, Cycle Bar, Top Style Nail Spa, and Club Pilates were eagerly welcomed to town. With a number of places in this particular area to grab a bite to eat, pamper yourself, burn some calories, and do some retail therapy, you can easily spend an afternoon here without ever having to move your car. Once you’re done, pop into Fort Nonsense Brewing Company for a flight of IPAs and a rousing board game with friends. 2020 DENVILLE GUIDE // 25

Brown’s, mouth-watering garlic knots from Il Torrente, the steamed dumplings from Bubble in Paradise, the ribs from Sheimer’s, and the #7 sandwich from Anthony & Sons are all sure-fire crowd pleasers. With so many of the town’s restaurants being independently owned and operated, your patronage is often rewarded with staff that know your order and your favorite seat at the bar. Despite the restaurant business being an insanely difficult challenge for an entrepreneur, Denville also enjoys very low turnover with its eating establishments, and several have celebrated many many years here (Denville Seafood, Sergio’s, Denville Dairy, and Café Metro to name a few).
