EDITOR'S LETTER

I spied the words on the wall of Jasper White’s restaurant in 2011 and they’ve stuck with me ever since. Because that really says it all right there. Food is at the heart of so many memories, laying the foundation for intimate dinners for two, celebratory meals, a quick drink with friends, late night study sessions, and everything in between.

No matter the occasion, food represents so many different emotions and is at the root of a lot of good that exists in our lives. With over 60 establishments in Denville that offer food and drink, we are fortunate to have so many options to choose from when we want to share a meal with friends and family. Take a night off from cooking, discover new cuisine, and eat local.

So, get out there...and celebrate food, and love, in Denville with us.

When news of The Pasta Shop opening up in downtown Denville started to circulate, everyone was understandably eager. But would it live up to the hype?

In a word ... yes.

The wait for a table can be as long as two hours on a busy weekend, but with the reputation of Sergio and the chef's outstanding food, staff, and customer service, people wait. The Pasta Shop doesn’t take reservations, but you can leave your telephone number with the host and they will page you when your table is ready, which is the perfect set up to grab drinks or do some retail therapy downtown.

The menu is simple and focuses on their strengths and highlighting seasonal favorites. The restaurant encourages sharing, which is an ideal way to sample many menu items during the same visit without your bill getting too crazy.

During several meals at The Pasta Shop, we have been slowly working our way through the offerings, making it challenging to settle on personal favorites.

The meatballs are generously sized and the tomato sauce is rich—we asked for bread on the side so as not to waste one drop of the sauce.

The wedge salad is cold and crisp and a generous sliver of perfection.

A light creamy dressing, sliced multi-colored grape tomatoes and small pieces of bleu cheese pull it all together for one delicious bite after another.

BRUSSELS FONDUTA

With a desire to be a bit virtuous and balance out the dessert we had our

eye on for later, we ordered the cauliflower parm ... all the tasty attributes of a more traditional parmigiana dish, with slightly less guilt.

We have also had the squid ink pasta (so different and good), the ravioli, and the Brussels Fonduta. Not a dud in the bunch, and with the menu evolving a bit with the changing seasons, you can easily find something new each time you walk in their door.

So... why does The Pasta Shop work, and why are guests willing to wait?

To put it simply, it’s a wonderful experience from beginning to end.

Although seating is limited, we were not rushed at all, and enjoyed many leisurely paced meals without feeling like we had to hurry up. The wait staff is friendly, accommodating, and truly knowledgeable about the menu, making several helpful suggestions along the way. And lastly, dining at The Pasta Shop feels like you walked into a New York City restaurant ... without having to cross the bridge.

Don’t let the mention of longer wait times deter you. You can get seated fairly quickly if you go slightly outside of peak dining times, and take-out is available as well.

For those that enjoy a bit of cheese, Denville does not disappoint.

Whether it's topping your burger, smothering your fries, an appetizer to start your meal or made fresh on the premises, there are plenty of spots to satisfy your savory craving. Here are a few suggestions to get you started...

Mejicano, a colorful little well-kept secret tucked into First 1 ElAvenue, is a great spot to pop into when you need to satisfy your

Mexican craving. Their lunch specials menu is varied, and a veritable bargain at $7.95 with beverage, and we are especially partial to indulging in their nachos with queso appetizer. Round out your meal with fresh guacamole and carnitas, and you’ll find yourself coming back for more.

Second Half on Main is a great pub where everyone just 2 The might know your name. Grab a seat at the bar for cocktails (their Bloody Mary’s are a meal in itself!) or a table in the dining room, and take a look at their eclectic menu. Where else can you find Italian, Mexican, and American dishes all in the same spot? We are partial to their Burgundy Slider with mozzarella and fries (and love the little basket they’re served in just as much)!

D Pizza is a family owned and operated little treasure. On 3 Casa any given day, you can walk in and have eight different pizzas to

choose from right out of their wood burning oven. You can eat in the front section of the restaurant, which is more casual, the back dining room, or get an order to go. We love their mussels with robust red sauce (be sure to get extra bread for mopping up  NACHOS QUESO, EL MEJICANO that deliciousness!), the arugula, fig, and goat cheese salad, and the Penne a la Vodka. Plan ahead on weekends—they get crazy busy!

The phrase “weird and wonderful” can mean different things to different people because those very words are quite subjective. One person’s “weird” can very easily be another person’s “norm.” Maybe "weird & wonderful" is an unusual food combination that you never would have thought of or perhaps it’s a new way to prepare something you consider “same old, same old.”

In our quest for Denville’s edible edition of “weird and wonderful,” we went on a culinary treasure hunt to uncover some of the more unique food offerings around town, and here are a few that we found.
