dear Denville,
INTRODUCING DENVILLE, NJ
Welcome to the 2019 Denville Guide. We created this Guide to celebrate our community and all the wonderful things it has to offer. We hope that you use it as a go-to resource throughout the entire year.
Denville is an ordinary community filled with extraordinary people. Whether it’s the bustling Rotary Street Fair, the carnival at Firemen’s Field, the official opening and treelighting at Santaland, how the town comes together after a hurricane, or to rebuild a beloved playground, there is no denying that Denville and its people have a huge and giving heart. As you page through this Guide, you’ll discover many new things to do and notice many old favorites. The core of our community is built on a solid foundation of its people, and that is shown through the town’s spirit and the sheer number of mom-and-pop businesses we have. If you are new to Denville, or a long-time resident, we hope you fall in love all over again. DENVILLE COMMUNITY GARDENS

food & drink
Encompassing nearly 12 square miles, it is no surprise that Denville is host to over 50 places to grab a bite to eat. Whether you’re looking for a formal sit-down experience, casual dining, or something more grab-and-go, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. Everything from delicious ice cream cones (and a Denville favorite Flood Mudd!) and gluten-free food to all-you-can-eat-sushi and more traditional pub fare, you’ll have a great time eating yourself silly from one end of town to the other.
CHICO’S MEXICAN GRILL
Although Denville’s eating establishments are scattered here and there and tucked away in little pockets, the main areas can be grouped into Route 46, Route 10, Route 53, and our bustling downtown. Many of Denville’s restaurants are independently owned and operated, with a few chain establishments sprinkled in for good measure. Several of our eateries, like The Pasta Shop, Denville Dairy, Miga Sushi, and Thatcher McGhee’s, attract visitors from all over, and good food and hospitality keeps them coming back for more.
Denville was named one of the “15 great NJ food towns that no one knows about” by NJ.com in 2019.

The Denville Farmers Market is a true community gathering event on Sundays. It makes us smile seeing everyone enjoying a trip to the market, supporting local farmers and seasonal food. Equally, the farmers love to talk with their market visitors about how they grow and cook the food, sharing recipes and also teaching families what it means to not just be organic, but local. So, from our farming families to yours, thank you for visiting from near and far, for buying locally grown food year round and most importantly, helping us build a healthier community!

SHOPPING
Denville’s shopping landscape is unique — it truly celebrates independent shopkeepers with a few large chain stores added in for good measure. Where else can you find gourmet dog treats, old-school candy you remember enjoying as a child, and the perfect gift for a pre-teen or senior all in the same area? Add in the spirited customer service from store owners and employees that both live and work here, a real community atmosphere and Small Town USA vibe, and plenty of free parking, it’s easy to see why so many constantly sing the praises of shopping in Denville.
DOWNTOWN DENVILLE
Although opportunities to shop here can largely be grouped into two distinct areas (downtown and Route 10), there are many other shops nestled throughout the town, including along Route 53 and Route 46. Take some time to wander and see what new stores you discover.

DOWNTOWN DISTRICT There is no question that the heart of any city is its downtown, and Denville is no exception. Beautifully maintained with thoughtful streetscaping, a well-curated music playlist from the speakers up and down Broadway, and holiday touches throughout the year, Denville’s downtown district is a destination in and of itself. Spend a day and enjoy the many unique, independently owned boutiques found throughout the district. Be sure to note the parking rules downtown. Many spots have 2 hour limits, and free all-day parking can be found on the outskirts of Broadway.
SHOPPES AT UNION HILL The Shoppes at Union Hill includes classic retailers Banana Republic, Loft, Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, and Gap, several places for a casual bite to eat or a slightly more formal atmosphere, and spots for coffee or froyo. With ample parking and easy access from Route 10, this location provides several shopping solutions for those that live on the other side of town. Travel just a little further West and you’ll find Denville Commons, another shopping strip. This area features locations to get your creative itch scratched, restaurants to grab a quick meal, and a few places offering kid-centered activities.

our history
THE ROOTS OF DENVILLE
The small community of Denville is steeped in rich history and tradition. Because of its convenient location along major transportation routes, it is known as “The Hub of Morris County.” Incorporated in 1913, Denville covers nearly 12 square miles of land, including wide open farm space, lake communities, and several busy shopping districts. In 1800, early settler John Hinchman said that Denville was so named because of a “den” of wild animals that hung out in the swampy areas by the Rockaway River and Denbrook, where they were hunted by the Lenape Native Americans. If you want to truly explore more Denville history, there are a number of excellent places to visit and resources to look into, including the Denville Historical Society and Museum, the Ayers/Knuth Farm Foundation, the Denville Public Library, and even a visit to Town Hall to check out their hallway HUNGRY FOR MORE photos and mural or to buy AREA HISTORY? the Denville-opoly game. PET-FRIENDLY DENVILLE
There is no denying that Denville loves pets, and there are many ways for you and your furry companions to enjoy our town: • Take a walk downtown and you’ll find several shops and restaurants with water bowls and outdoor seating to accommodate your four-legged friends • Register your dog for a pass to the Happy Hound Playground to exercise and socialize • Visit the Denville Animal Shelter (140 Morris Avenue) to find a new companion or to volunteer • Pamper your pet (dog, cat, or otherwise) at one of the many groomers, pet shops, veterinarians, and boarding facilities in town. There are also numerous dog walkers and pet sitters! • Join everyone for Dogs Gone Wild at Cooks Pond, a wonderful bi-annual fundraiser for our town’s shelter
Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.

You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.
Winston Churchill
Whether you have a few free hours a week or just once a month, there are a number of diverse organizations that would welcome your time and spirit.
