hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’?

I always wanted to do something that involved fashion and film and I was quite artistic and good at practical things. When I was 21 I worked in graphics and didn’t feel like I was pushing myself creatively. I also found having an office job quite restricting, I wanted a bit more of an adventure.

I loved how make-up artistry was all about creating a perception. I was always interested in how you could change a persons face with make-up and make them look glamorous, beautiful or cool…

It’s about giving people a look.

Are you self-taught or did you train somewhere?

I trained at Complexions College for two months.

There were two weeks of hair training and the rest focused on the basics of make-up. I remember thinking that I didn’t need to learn how to cover blemishes as I was only going to be working with models (LOL, so naive!) I really enjoyed the course and it was the first time that I felt the teachers were really encouraging and interested in my development – I never had that at school.

You grew up Essex in the UK, has that had an influence on your work in any way?

Essex is mainly made up of a lot of people from the East End (of London) and if you don’t come from a privileged background you really learn how to graft and work hard – and not always in a conventional way.

Who or what inspires you?

I take a lot of references from growing up in the 80s. Music and fashion went hand-in-hand, everyone had a look and I loved that during my youth. I also get inspired by fashion, films, art, people in the street, conversations, paintings and the composition of natural colours. It can be anything visual really… I never try and take things literally, I always try and break it down, then you can make it yours. I love the graphics elements with pictures too.

Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots?

Working backstage on shows and at shoots are completely different things and I like them both as it’s part of what I do. That’s why I like my career… it’s diversity makes it so interesting!

Define your style… Is there a particular period that has influenced you most?

My style is all about achieving a look in an effortless way, I don’t make it too complicated. It’s about understanding skin and face shape so you choose the right products and textures, finding the best solution and quickest way to achieve the look. In the industry I am known as the ‘Master of Nudes’ and for creating beautiful skin – this doesn’t mean that is all I do, all my work will make the subject look the best they can, whatever the brief may be. I’m either beautiful and sexy or full-on creative, there is no middle ground to my style. look quite strong, I never like to simply make someone just pretty. What I love about being a makeup artist is creating a picture that makes me want to look at it. Above all, whatever the look is, it has to be attractive, gorgeous and not scary – I want you to want to look at it. So, my style reflects this.

Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without?

Moisturiser or a tinted moisturiser, because once your skin starts to get damaged it’s very hard to get it back. Skin is super important as it can make you look more youthful.

Your top five favourite products?

Burberry Fresh Glow, Shu Uemura The Ultimate Mascara, Burberry Sheer Concealer, Burberry Lip Cover in Tulip Pink (it’s a great nude colour for me), and Shu Uemura Lash Curler. I know there’s a lot of Burberry in here, but as I develop the products of course there will be! I only develop products that I really believe in.

Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career?

I learnt the most from Dick Page. I assisted him mainly for shows and we got along really well and became friends. He had very unconventional make-up techniques which made me realise that PHOTO you didn’t have to follow the rules.

Yes, I think it makes you look and feel bet Without exercise you don’t use your body enou throughout the day. You need to keep moving your body will get stiff. Exercise is good for soul… healthy body, healthy mind! I also h quite a lot of energy and if I don’t work out I get grumpy!

How do you feel the industry has changed si you first started?

The make-up artist’s role has changed a lot o the years. You’re no longer just a make-up ar in today’s world, you’re also an expert, a pers ality, a voice, a teacher… you need to be able communicate what you do. You never had to that before, it used to be all about the end res Now it’s more about how you achieve that.

As for the industry, I think we’ll continue to brands trying to offer the complete packag their ‘complete woman’. They’re selling a lifest and it’s not just only about the clothes anym Mass media has contributed to this as people now much more aware of everything. Previou what we were doing in London would take age translate over to NYC or Paris – and change by time it got there. Now everything is instant a people find out globally the same day. What defines beauty for you?

It might sound a bit naff, but nature really defines beauty for me – the brilliant colours in birds and wild flowers, natural beauty, fur… you always like people because of who they are and this, in turn, is why you find them beautiful.

You also make and edit behind-the-scenes films which have been used by French Vogue no less.

Might we see you ditching make-up and moving to Hollywood as a big-shot movie director?

LOL! No it’s just a fun thing that I like to do! It’s more about what I see and my vision of backstage.

I try to make it a bit cooler as it isn’t always interesting when you’re not involved. I like capturing moments and I just hope people like the films.

How did your role as Artistic Consultant for Burberry Beauty come about? Can you tell us of any exciting plans for the future?

I worked on Dutch magazine with Elliott Smedley, who was the Fashion Editor. When he became Creative Consultant for Burberry, Christopher Bailey asked him who he liked to work with and he said me. We grew together as Burberry developed. Luckily our aesthetic was the same so it all worked out really well, I couldn’t have asked for a better match. We’ve worked together for Burberry ever since. It’s now been over 12 years working on campaign images and the Prorsum show. There are lots of exciting things ahead that I can’t talk about just yet – watch this space!

Over the past three years we have seen the graphic liner trend remain strong in every season. There are so many variations of this bold eye look but here are my top three versions of it and how to get them.

Hero Products: Paul & Joe Creamy Powder Compact and Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner.

1. U sing a matt textured primer around the eyes beforehand is ideal to keep it for far longer and Paul & Joe Creamy Powder Compact is fantastic for the eyelid. Pat on liberally with a medium sized flat sable brush.

2. Using a pen eyeliner is the quickest & easiest way to draw lines, but keep the Muji Fine Cotton Tips nearby to touch up the rough edges.

3. With this look its important to keep the pen held like as if you were writing with it, and slow and steady is best.

4. Start this look by drawing three dots on the eye to map out the liner (just above eye on outer, inner eye just above and just above the crease.)

This will allow you to trace your half-moon shape liner easier.

5. Draw very lightly in a rounded motion from the outer dot up to the middle, then finish the line coming toward the inner eye.

6. Customise this look according to your own eye shape and style, options could be to add an upward flick on the outer edges.

FUTURISTIC FELINE FLICKS Hero Products: Kryolan Cake Eyeliner and Cake Eyeliner Sealer, a fine tipped eyeliner brush (a small angle brush for the bottom line) and Muji Mini Cotton Tips.

1. M ix a drop of the sealer liquid into the eyeliner cake and mix until you get an opaque consistency.

2. S tart your line on the outer eye in the lash line and slowly trace along till you have a fine line all the way across the eye. Build the line on the outer edge slightly thicker and take the line straight out but slightly up to create a feline flick.

3. D on’t worry about getting the angle 100% on the flick as you can perfect with a cotton tip after.

4. If you want to go all out with the bottom line then use an angle brush to create this straight edged line as seen from Monique Hillier Fall 2013. Start two-thirds along the bottom lashline and imprint the angle brush with the cake liner and trace until the two lines connect.

GRAPHIC SHAPES Hero Products: Tom Ford Ombre Eye Colour in she wolf, Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner and Bourjois Little Round Pot Light Eyeshadow blanc dore 1.

1. G orgeous little new shimmer pots from Bourjois give a hint of light to the eye and work great against really dark shades. Lightly apply the shadow shimmer into the inner corners of the eyelids to highlight with a small flat eye brush.

2. A densely pigmented eyeshadow like Tom Ford Ombre shadow will give the high impact look we need for a graphic eye shape. Start with an angle brush and imprint the darkest shade in the palette in an upward angle of the outer edge of the eye.

3. Tip your head back whilst looking in the mirror and imprint another line of shadow with the angle brush across the crease and two-thirds along.

4. Grab a small stiif rounded eye brush and colour in the outer edges of the shape you have created, working inwards and stopping two-thirds along.

Blend inner edges with a clean soft tipped brush.

5. Use the Muji Fine Cotton Tips with oil-free eye make-up remover again to clean off the edges and sharpen this uber Graphic eye shape.

6. Add a thin line of the Stila liquid pen just along the top of the lashline to finish off this look.

TIP This trend would look amazing paired with a dark sparkly metallic nail colour, my favourite right now is Marc Jacobs in petra 140.

What was your route into make-up?

It was a happy accident to be honest. I was the world’s most awful teen, a total rebel with no direction and no drive to do anything except everything I wasn’t meant to be doing! When I finished school without decent grades my lovely and long suffering Mum marched me down to the local college and told me we weren’t leaving until I signed up for a course because “You’re not sitting around wasting away in my house for the rest of your life.” I looked down the list and decided Media Make-up and Hair sounded the easiest and signed up to get her off my back! The rest is history! I loved it from the very first day.

I’ve gone on to assist lots of great artists and their help and advice has been invaluable, but really it’s all down to my wonderful Mum. If it wasn’t for her I would never have found out what I was good at and anything I wanted to work so hard towards. I’ve never had another job, it’s all I’ve ever done and I feel lucky every day for it.

After I qualified I took every training opportunity I could. I went on courses, and for a year worked in a clinic with other practitioners to get the experience I needed. It was only then that I felt ready to start my clinic and so The Non Surgical Clinic was born.

What treatments do you offer?

My philosophy has been one of offering simple but effective treatments, concentrating on what people want most – and want done properly! My expertise is in fillers, wrinkle relaxing injections, skin boosters and dermaroller. I can take away wrinkles, build cheeks, plump lips, straighten noses and improve skin condition. Alongside this we have a thorough discussion about skin condition and I’m happy to advise and treat common skin problems. There are other things I do that people do not know much about. For example, suffering from excessive sweating can be very embarrassing, but can often be cured with simple injections.

Why is going to a reputable clinic important?

I believe that all procedures should be undertaken to the highest standards. The recent report into the non surgical cosmetic market said “you have more protection buying a ball point pen than buying fillers”. This comment may be true for some clinics, but as a specialist in this area, we should all strive to make this a thing of the past. I have always believed that this is wrong. When I set up the clinic I wanted it to be run by doctors who believe in quality and excellence. I tell people about all of the good and bad things that are possible, explain the risks and reassure them that I will be there if they have a problem.

I sometimes treat people who have been to other clinics and never been told anything about the treatment. Its wrong, I think its really important that the non surgical journey is one that the patient and I travel together and that decisions are made based on proper information. By choosing The Non Surgical Clinic you can feel assured that you are in the hands of a medical doctor who understands your anatomy and how a treatment should be administered for best effect and to minimise any potential problems.

Are non-surgical treatments permanent?

Some can be but I specialise in semi-permanent fillers that are slowly reabsorbed by the body and last anywhere from six months in the lips to 18 months in the cheeks. Wrinkle relaxing injections last from four to six months and gradually wear off. A condition improved by dermaroller and skin boosters is long term.

How much does a treatment cost? Will I need to re-mortgage my house to pay for it!

I

nspired by the icons of the 20s, 30s and 40s such as Clara Bow, Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth, I wanted a modern take on the most iconic vintage looks. To achieve this I used warm copper and bronze tones instead of dark cool toned browns or greys.

CREATING THE LOOK Use the foundation of your choice and take your time to create a flawless look. It should be more matte than glowing – kind of retro. Skip powder and concealer at first and apply it after eyeshadow.

EYES Apply MAC Paint Pot in Constructivist all over the eye – map out the shape of the typical 20s eye make-up. Start from the inner corner (besides the nose) and work all the way up to the brows. Moving on to the outer part, drop the eyeshadow down to give the eyes that ‘sleepy’, dramatic look. Underneath the eyes use the same paint pot quite low down.

Use Urban Decay eyeshadow in Hustle all over the lid – high up, following the same shape. Apply MAC eyeshadow in Embark over the natural crease,

starting in the inner part and blending down until you reach the outside corners of your upper lashes.

Blend UD eyeshadow in Smog over the outside part of the lid. To give the lid more dimension, use UD eyeshadow in Half Baked and MAC eyeshadow in Honeylust inthe centre. Repeat the same colors underneath the eyes using any black matte eyeshadow or pigment (Illamasqua Pigment in Zeitgeist) with an angled eyeliner brush and create a soft blended eyeliner. Repeat and blend the colors over and over until you are happy with the finish. On the waterlines, use black gel eyeliner to create more depth. Apply false eye lashes (or two on top of each other like me).

FINISHING TOUCHES To give the look even more drama I applied a mixture of two blushes really heavy on the cheekbones and on the temples. I invested in a bold, matte vintage red lip. The red has a brick undertone which blends well with the warm eyeshadow colors. The final touch – a glamorous beauty spot using a Eye Brow Pen.
