As you may know, the highlight of 2021 was our weeklong series of events culminating in the Rededication Celebration of The Wall Las Memorias AIDS Monument which took place on World AIDS Day on December 1, 2021. The event was amazing. We had over 1000 people attend all 3 festivities and several hundred more on virtual platforms. The greatest part of the Rededication evening was not just the music and speeches, but it was the fact that so many people from diverse communities came together to commemorate those who past from AIDS and to celebrate the renovation of The Wall Las Memorias AIDS Monument. On behalf of the members of our organization, THANK YOU for your support. Our success breeds higher demand for our work in the community. In response, we intend to support and expand this work to prevent health disease and promote wellness through this year’s agency theme, Reimagining Healthier Communities. Together, we will continue to engage in the fight for civil rights and social justice which has been a hallmark of our agency. OUR STORY Inspired by personal loss to AIDS in the early 90’s, The Wall Las Memorias (TWLM) was founded in 1993 with the vision of bringing HIV/AIDS awareness to the Latino community. The movement began when founder Richard Zaldivar was informed that his close friend was battling HIV. After observing his friend’s denial and shame, Zaldivar was determined to create an avenue of dialogue dedicated to educating both his community and the rest of the world about HIV/AIDS prevention through the creation of The Wall Las Memorias AIDS Monument. While the organization was growing, Richard recognized the tremendous need for health prevention services and the importance of connecting the LGBTQ community to families and faith institutions. The journey has led to our current work as one of the nation’s leaders in health prevention.

OUR MISSION The Wall Las Memorias is a community health and wellness organization dedicated to serving Latino, LGBTQ+, and other underserved populations through advocacy, education, and building the next generation of leadership.
OUR MONUMENT The Wall Las Memorias AIDS Monument was constructed in 2003 and is located in Lincoln Park in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. The Wall Las Memorias AIDS Monument is the first and only publicly funded AIDS monument in the country and is recognized for its innovative approach to addressing the AIDS epidemic and promoting societal wellness.The monument acts as an anchor of our mission to promote awareness and prevent illness in our marginalized communities. It is a physical representation of our vision to build equity and social justice.

OUR PROGRAMS With the establishment of The Wall Las Memorias AIDS Monument, the organization has since then evolved into a thriving force in the Latino and LGBTQ+ community. The Wall Las Memorias (TWLM) has since been advocating for prevention and awareness of various health and wellness issues such as HIV/AIDS, men’s health, trans and nonbinary health, substance abuse, and mental health. Today, TWLM incorporates grassroots community organizing, mobilization, and leadership building into its programs and services. TWLM has been recognized for its social justice efforts on the local, state, and national levels.

HEALTH PREVENTION PROGRAM & SERVICES
The Wall Las Memorias (TWLM) has been serving gay, bisexual and questioning men since its inception in 1993. Our innovative programs and services integrate culture, spirituality, and social justice to address various health issues affecting our men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) population. The Wall Las Memorias (TWLM) is a leader in providing health and wellness programs and services to the greater Los Angeles community and beyond. All programs and services are tailored to enrich the spirit and the health of our clients through culturally responsive services.
HIV and Hep-C Testing & Counseling TWLM continues to provide HIV and Hep-C prevention services including free testing and counseling to cisgender gay, bisexual, and questioning men-who-have-sex-with-men, as well as transgender & non-binary individuals. Get to Zero LA As part of the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) National Campaign, Get to Zero, we have established Get to Zero LA - Our newest effort and vision for zero new HIV infections in LA County! Achieving this goal begins with making it easy for people to access testing, diagnosis, and treatment. Providing client-centered HIV testing services to populations at risk for HIV in Los Angeles. Linkage to Care, Community Engagement, Peer Counseling All of our programs offer linkages and warm connections to appropriate general health and mental health care. Look out for our next event for the LGBTQI2-S TAY community where we aim to build community by encouraging each other to live authentic and healthy lives. Peer health specialists are available to provide culturally competent counseling and support to our LGBTQI2-S transitional age youth.

Men’s Talk - Our peer-led community support group provides space for men who identify as gay, bisexual, queer, or questioning for the purpose of building brotherhood, creating change, and nourishing leadership. Re-Act Now - A program designed to empower Latinx gay, bisexual, and queer men ages 18-24 on issues pertaining to mental health stigma reduction, substance abuse prevention, and HIV/Hep-C education utilizing the power of queer art, drag, music, and culture. Young Advocates for Action and Sustainability (YAAS) - This program was designed to promote health, wellness, and leadership among young gay, bisexual, and queer Latino and African-American men ages 15-29. Men’s Group - Our longest lasting community support group, come together and talk about their experiences with other men. POZ Group - A safe place where people living with HIV can share their experiences, find community and access valuable resources to continue living healthy and balanced lives.

TRANS & NON-BINARY HEALTH Transgender individuals face a multitude of health issues including a high risk of HIV infection, low rates of preventative cancer screenings, and rejection from some providers when seeking healthcare. Discrimination is one of the worst barriers transgender people face in their everyday lives. Since 2014, The Wall Las Memorias (TWLM) has offered services to transgender persons which have included healthcare referrals, counseling, and linkage to hormone therapy. Today, our Trans Health Program aims to reduce the health disparities experienced by transgender women of color. To address their physical health and wellness, we provide free HIV testing, linkage to care, and preventive health resources such as PrEP(Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis).
She Her Hers Support Group To address the emotional and mental health needs of this community, TWLM hosts a weekly transgender women’s support group called She Her Hers. The peer-led group promotes healthy living through culture, faith, health, and wellness During weekly meetings, transgender women of color come together to support each other with a compassionate safe space for growth and leadership development. Non-Binary Health Enby Entities Support Group - Our peer-led community support group provides space for individuals who identify as non-binary, gender non-conforming, and questioning for the purpose of building community, creating change, and nourishing leadership.

MENTAL HEALTH The LGBTQI2-S community is especially vulnerable when it comes to mental health issues. LGBTQI2-S people are twice as likely to experience mental health problems and have higher rates of suicide attempts and successes compared to their heterosexual counterparts. The transgender community have it even worse, with 48% of transgender adults having contemplated suicide within the last year compared to 4% of the general population.
Beyond Safe Spaces Program Funded by the LA County of Mental Health Department, Beyond Safe Spaces is a multi-pronged program that provides a wrap-around approach to promoting health for LGBTQI2-S youth with services for youth, parents and caregivers, connecting them to organizations and county departments. Story Collective A workshop-based empowerment curriculum for LGBTQI2-S youth, aimed at cultivating mental health advocacy through the arts. Participants explore the arts and share their mental health story through an interactive workshop series and community art exhibition.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION The Wall Las Memorias (TWLM) spearheaded the development and funding of a series of methamphetamine task forces by submitting more than 10,000 signed petitions demanding action from the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, in 2006. Through its leadership in the Act Now Against Meth Coalition, the agency developed the Greater East Los Angeles Meth Task Force—an effort which generated national attention for its work in mobilizing the Latinx community to address the meth epidemic. In 2018, TWLM led a successful campaign to defeat SB-58, a bill pushed by nightlife lobbyists that would have harmed our communities by giving some California cities the ability to extend last call at bars, restaurants, and clubs.
Alliance for Change Campaign A community led collaborative campaign which addresses harmful use of alcohol and other drugs by encouraging healthy lifestyles, building community leadership, and advocating for local and state policy change, and funded by LA County Substance Abuse & Prevention Control. Act Now Against Meth Campaign A community mobilization campaign aimed to address the meth epidemic, demanding prevention and treatment services to address meth use in the LGBTQ and POC community. Rise Up & Act: Youth for Change Engages youth in community mobilization and organizing activities to advocate for healthier public policies around substance abuse, simultaneously increasing their own empowerment, activating home-grown leadership and bolstering their agency in the world.

ACT NOW AGAINST METH To address the methamphetamine crisis in the County of Los Angeles, The Wall Las Memorias (TWLM) reinstituted the Act Now Against Meth Coalition. Learning from our earlier campaign in 2008, the current campaign created the first ever grassroots approach in addressing the meth epidemic. During these past 24 months, The Wall Las Memorias: ● ● ●
Met with members of the impacted community and conducted focus groups. Recruited over 20 community-based organizations to form The Act Now Against Meth Coalition Developed an official Los Angeles County Platform on Meth. The document contains over 32 recommendations in the prevention, treatment and policy that impacts this issue.
The Act Now Against Meth Coalition also held a press conference in March to present the official platform to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The media opportunity featured community partners and testimonies from specialists and advocates. Supervisor Hilda Solis will be working with the collaborative in implementing many of those policies. The Act Now Against Meth model has been recognized by the United States Academy of Medicine as a promising practice in community engagement.

COVID-19 COMMUNITY SUPPORT The Wall Las Memorias' (TWLM) Stop the Spread: Protege Tu Familia campaign is part of a county-wide effort to stop COVID-19 from further impacting our most vulnerable communities. Our educational and grassroots campaign provides the most current information on COVID-19 from the Public Health Department, offering systems navigation in order to build community capacity for health and wellness during the pandemic. Stop the Spread: Protege Tu Familia welcomes all community partners in the Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, East Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley communities to participate in this virtual prevention campaign. In an effort to be inclusive of all community members, we welcome all types of community-based organizations, faith institutions, education groups and academia, businesses, neighborhood councils, law enforcement groups, unions and labor groups to get involved in our efforts to keep our communities safe and healthy. Community Partners benefit from a menu of services including custom-made COVID-19 educational trainings for their constituents, clients, and/or customers; personalized co-branded videos edited by a professional video editor; co-branded marketing materials for virtual distribution; co-sponsored COVID-19 town halls; and linkage to TWLM's menu of services including mental health services, substance abuse prevention, HIV testing, counseling services, and more.

SUPPORT GROUPS As part of our mission to build healthier communities, The Wall Las Memorias facilitates a number of support groups that empower individuals and create safe spaces for personal growth. Our support groups offer participants the chance to heal and reflect in a community setting as well as provide individuals with the tools needed to build leadership and advocacy skills. 2022 SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES EVENTS DETAILS ROJO: Food Tasting & Awards Benefit - Fall 2022 ROJO is an annual fundraising event hosted by The Wall Las Memorias featuring an evening of food tasting, live musical entertainment from legendary and local musicians, and plenty of dancing! Special community heroes are also honored that night for their contribution to the local LGBTQ community. Proceeds from ROJO help fund programs and services. Noche de las Memorias - December 1, 2022 Noche De Las Memorias is commemorated on World AIDS Day each year honoring those lost to the AIDS epidemic and marks the anniversary of The Wall Las Memorias. The World AIDS Day event is hosted at The Wall Las Memorias AIDS Monument and is free to the community. It is an evening of reflection, music, and healing in commemoration of the national awareness day. New names of loved ones lost to the epidemic are added to the AIDS monument on that night and revealed in a special candle lighting ceremony.
