ravelers Insurance recently hosted their “SHE Travels” forum in Houston, Texas. SHE Travels is a panel discussion that focuses on the development of female careers within the insurance industry and fosters important discussions about female leadership and the empowerment of women in the workplace.

Our own Chief Operating Officer, Katherine Nolan, was one of three esteemed female leaders in the insurance industry selected to participate in the SHE Travels panel discussion. The discussion included topics such as networking strategies, career advancement and modern mentoring.

During the panel Katherine stressed the importance of women advocating for their own careers: “You need to own your career. ‘If I’m not getting where I want to go, how do I do that?’ You need to ask for help sometimes, and that’s okay. You have to own [your career] because no one else is going to.”

With a female employment rate of nearly 80 percent at TWFG’s Home Office, and over 100 female branch owners, our company is no stranger to advocating for females in the industry, but that is not always the case for women in the workplace.

Katherine emphasized finding bosses, especially males, who will advocate for you: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help, ask for suggestions, or ask for input….

A lot of men will sponsor your development, but you have to open up to it and sometimes ask for help. Women don’t often like to do that.”

WFG is pleased to announce the addition of two senior managers to its management team — Janice Zwinggi, Chief Financial Officer and Julie Benes, Chief General Counsel.

Janice is a Texas native that joins us with 20+ years insurance experience with Statutory and GAAP accounting background. She has worked with MGAs and insurance carriers and most recently was SVP, CFO of Hudson Insurance Group in New York City. Janice is a CPA and obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from Texas State University. She will be responsible for all GAAP and Statutory financials and reporting as well as planning, budgeting and enhancing TWFG’s internal controls.

Julie Benes joins us as our Chief General Counsel and has 15 years of law experience.

She obtained her undergraduate degree from Boston University and her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law in Chicago. Julie has a diverse background with significant experience representing Fortune 500 companies and large regional companies in litigation. She also has served as general counsel for several closely held corporations providing advice on corporate formation and governance, employment matters, company policies and procedures, and intellectual property protection.

We are delighted that Janice and Julie have joined the TWFG family as they bring years of experience and wisdom along with fresh perspectives to the team.

Kim Snider Operations Manager We are pleased to announce that Kim Snider is being promoted to Operations Manager in training and will replace Leslie Nowak who is moving to the Austin area.

Kim has been with TWFG for four years and came to us with 10 years of insurance experience at a Farmers Insurance agency.

Kim currently handles incoming book rolls and knows the majority of the processes in the Operations area, so her transition should be seamless.

y family has been walking in the Alzheimer’s Walk since 2010 when my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. For two years, we walked in The Woodlands and then other family members were saying how much they wanted to walk with us, but they all live in New Orleans and couldn’t make it here for just the weekend.

his holiday season TWFG Home Office took part in their yearly gift drive through the South Montgomery County YMCA “Angel Giving Tree” program.

The Angel Giving Tree program works to provide Montgomery County children in need with holiday presents. For many of the children served by this program, these are the only gifts they will receive.

Participants are encouraged to take an ornament off of The Angel Giving Tree. Each ornament represents a child in need and includes the child’s clothing and shoe size, as well as a toy they would like to receive.

So our third year walking, we started traveling to New Orleans so that we could walk with our family. This year when TWFG decided to sponsor the walk in The Woodlands, I was super excited to fund-raise and walk in both walks. This is such a great cause that affects so many people and loved ones, and I will continue to support it in any way I can until there is a cure.

Along with their Giving Tree program, the YMCA is also accepting donations for adult members of each family in need. Gift cards for groceries, Christmas trees and decorations are just a few of the many things the YMCA hopes to give to families to brighten up their holiday season.

WFG Home Of fice hosted The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce’s monthly “Meet the New Members Reception” event on October 22.

This monthly meet and greet provides new members of the Chamber with an opportunity to introduce their business to other new and existing Chamber members.

During the reception, new members are invited to share a two-minute “commercial” about their local business. This gives new members a great opportunity to share what they do, and how they can benefit other members of the Chamber. After the new members present their businesses, a group photo is taken and is published in the next issue of Business Today magazine.

How to Protect Yourself from Phishing Attacks WHAT IS EMAIL PHISHING? Email phishing is the act of creating and sending fraudulent emails in order to obtain sensitive financial or personal information. These emails are often well-designed spoofs of a legitimate company email containing links to a spoofed website or form that uses various methods, and urgent language, to request or collect a person’s email credentials or personal and financial information.

WHY DOES PHISHING WORK? The widespread use of phishing scams has been well documented in recent years which makes it hard to believe that people still fall victim to them. As people become more aware of these scams, the scammers continue to refine their methods. Phishers have learned how to precisely design spoof emails nearly identical to that of their legitimate counterparts.

These emails often contain urgent language requiring action on the part of the receiver. These emails often get scanned by busy readers and are acted on before the receiver checks their legitimacy. In order to help you avoid falling victim to these scams, we have included a few red flags to look for when reading your emails.

CREDIT CARD PHISHING SCAMS Phishers often count on the fact that credit card users receive and skim over emails from their credit card companies on a regular basis. Just like email phishers, credit card phishers use sophisticated techniques to closely copy legitimate company emails, then include messages with unusual levels of urgency.

Quick email skimming practices, combined with the urgent language frequently included in phishing emails, often lead customers to click on a spoofed link or attachment. These fraudulent links and attachments often direct recipients to well-crafted spoofs of their credit card company’s website that request and collect personal and financial information in an effort to steal the victim’s identity.

Once the victim’s identity is stolen, phishers will wreak irrevocable havoc by going on shopping sprees, opening new accounts, and tanking the victim’s credit score. This damage is often long-lasting but can be avoided if you are conscientious of the widespread threat of phishing scams.

randon Mangum, Jeff Howard, Kent Hineman and I were incredibly proud to participate in the 2019 Texas Marine Medal of Honor Memorial Golf Tournament in The Woodlands, TX, this past September.

The tournament featured many exciting highlights like hole-in-one prizes; a “closest to the pin” prize weekend at a Benchmark Resort; an appearance by five-time World Long Drive Finalist, Glenn Wilson Jr.; and Esprit de Corps with Marines and other patriots.

Though we didn’t win, we, along with TWFG Home Office, were thrilled to help raise funds to honor our United States Marines and their families. The event raised $65,000 which will be donated to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and Combined Arms Montgomery County.

The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is the nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships for military children.

Since their founding in 1962, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has awarded over 40,000 scholarships totaling over $135 million for military children in need. To learn more about their mission and commitment to our veterans’ families, visit their website at www.mcsf.org.

The event’s second beneficiary, Combined Arms, is a great organization that provides support to military veterans and their families as they transition to civilian life. This year it was Blake Torres, who has an 8-month-old son and cannot find a job due to PTSD. They have no food, and their car was repossessed so he couldn’t continue with Uber to feed his family. He was given a car from Progressive, and we donated gas for a month.

he Mud Dawg Run was held June 22, 2019 in Humble , TX, to benefit the ministries of New Covenant Church.

Over 20 obstacles, terrain changes and mud came together over 26 acres to challenge your resolve, strength and endurance.

With divisions from “experienced athlete” to 12 and under “beginner” races, there was fun for all.

Sparks Insurance sponsored the “cleaning station” where several hundred runners were able to clean the mud and sweat after their race and regroup with their teams and share the experience, while watching others finish the race!

Each event is themed, and this year the team took it to the next level by hosting a casino night. After 18 months, the team has grown from a small office to a new office with more staff. ur branch was excited to partner with the Beaumont Board of Realtors to sponsor lunch for local realtors during their continuing education classes.

This vital networking opportunity allowed us to speak with multiple agents about the insurance needs of their home buyers and sellers, and the importance of things like flood insurance in flood-prone zones of the Greater Houston area.

This October we were so excited to sponsor a booth at the Southeast Women’s Conference for breast cancer awareness.

The booth was a great opportunity to not only support the amazing cause of breast cancer awareness, but to also network with other charities and businesses in the area who are working to give back.

All the employees dressed up as dealers and hostesses for the evening. Our staff did such a great job that customers thought they were real dealers.

Two members of the team spent 18 hours smoking briskets, chicken and all the BBQ classics. You can’t have casino night without prizes! On top of raffle prizes every 30 minutes, the high roller of the night walked away with a brand-new TV. Our team is so blessed and thankful for all of our clients along with the growing team of agents and customer service experts.
