“
Well, the 2017 5K snuck up on us this year. We had been so busy working on EPIC and commissions our training for the race was nonexistent. But, with that being said, we still showed up to run! The number of people, young and old, getting ready to run was true motivation. The weather was perfect. It was especially fun to run with other TWFG people, Tiffany and Sara. Looking forward to next year!

It was a fun experience running the 5K of The Woodlands Marathon again this year. I enjoy being a part of an event that people come from all over the country to participate in. Running in the event with my friends and co-workers always makes it a great time as well. Looking forward to doing it again next year, and hopefully improving my time to a personal best.

ROLLING STRONG WITH: TWFG BOWLING TEAM Katherine Nolan COO The TWFG bowling team has been together for the past six years. In 2016 the team was officially branded “Rolling Strong.” The team consists of five members – Apprillé Moore, Michelle Gibbons (our fearless leader and captain), Chris Smith, Katherine Nolan and our Anchorman, Lionel Gibbons. The team bowls each Wednesday night at AMF Diamond Lanes in Houston. Since the league is ultra-competitive with 34 teams competing, the team strives to stay in the top half of the standings, which is a challenge, but fun. They welcome any support on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. Katherine Nolan

TWFG AND TWICO HELP BRING INSPIRATION TO THE WOODLANDS TWFG and Twico were part of an extraordinary opportunity to support the inaugural Inspire Film Festival held here in The Woodlands last month, and to sponsor the remarkable story and film, LANDFILL HARMONIC; one of 10 full-length documentaries, and seven short films curated from around the world. This story is centered around an unlikely hero, Favio Chavez, and young students from Cateura, Paraguay, a slum that’s built upon a landfill. The 2500 families who live there survive by separating garbage for recycling with more than 1500 tons of solid waste arriving each day. Illiteracy is rampant there, and Cateura’s youngest inhabitants are often the ones responsible for collecting and reselling the garbage. The water supply is very dangerously polluted; on rainy days, the town floods with contaminated water. “A violin is worth more than a house here,” says Favio Chavez, the orchestra’s director and founder. The world brought them trash, and they gave us back music. “People realize that we shouldnʼt throw away trash carelessly,” says Chavez at the end of the trailer. “Well, we shouldn’t throw away people either.” When we think of what it means to be a hero or to be heroic, we often think of political, military, business or athletic figures who fight for our freedom, invent new things that change our world, or who run faster, flip higher, throw further, honoring us all by bringing home the gold. Their successes are a reflection of our nation’s success, a source of our solidarity and pride, and more
importantly, remind us that with hard work, tenacity, and a little luck, anything is possible. Outside of this world of traditional heroes, are the everyday men and women who make remarkable contributions to their communities and the world in unexpected ways. They bring inspiration and hope to even the most cynical among us, reminding us that none of us wins until we all win, and by bringing out the best in others, we bring out the best in ourselves. They aren’t people who chase VIP status, collect big bonus checks, live in mansions or keep trophies on their shelves to remind them of past accomplishments. They are ordinary people who accomplish the extraordinary by simply giving of themselves, while inspiring others to make a positive impact on the world in their own way. The films that were screened during the Inspire Film Festival captured different dimensions of everyday heroes with stories that truly move the human spirit. Real people, sometimes in unreal situations, defying all odds to make a meaningful mark on the world — one that wouldn’t have been made had they not had the courage in the moment to rise to the occasion. The festival brought with it an opportunity for all of us in The Woodlands and surrounding communities, to step out of the everyday, ordinary routine, and to step into a world that opened our eyes and hearts to what we are all capable of. It was an opportunity for us all to embrace and cultivate the inspiration from watching these stories and begin looking for ways to be heroes ourselves.

On The Cover: THROW tells the story of an outsider from East Baltimore, an area challenged by gang violence and poverty. Often misunderstood as a human being, and bullied due to his stuttering, Coffin Nachtmahr found acceptance among a subculture of “throwers,” and it turns out, he’s a virtuoso. 12

CRUISING IN A ʼ52 CHEVY: TWFG STYLE Mark Brown Branch Owner — Sherman, TX A little about me: I have been in the insurance business since 1986, serving at different times, as an adjuster, Assistant District Manager for Farmers Insurance, and an agent for over 30 years. I have been with TWFG since May 2012. The ‘52 Chevy truck was a three-year project. Here are a few pictures of what it looked like when I bought it and the repair process.

I had a ‘52 Chevy truck when Tonja and I got married. We sold it, when we built our house, to help purchase her some new furniture. I had always wanted another vintage truck, so for my birthday five years ago she bought this 1952 Chevy for me. It was a three-year project, but after lots of
I go to a few car shows a year, and because of the great reception from the local community, (i.e., thumbs up every time I drive it), I decided to participate in the local Christmas parade, and car shows and to get more exposure I added the TWFG logo to the back window. I get lots of inquiries at classic car shows, as well as the community exposure for the classic car.

COMMITMENT TO CHARITY Kelly Bettencourt Executive Assistant to the President and CEO The TWFG Home Office had a full season of giving this past December. In all, we helped to support the Toys For Tots, the YMCA Angel Tree program and the Montgomery County Women’s Center Shelter Santa. This Christmas, The Woodlands had over 600 families that required assistance from the YMCA and their Angel Tree Christmas Assistance Program. The Home Office adopted 20 children and gave an unforgettable Christmas to these children who would otherwise have gone without.
Every day of the year, the Montgomery County Women’s Center provides a safe refuge, security, emotional support and empowerment to survivors of domestic violence and their children. The Home Office participated in the “Share a Family” project and helped to provide a memorable holiday to more than 100 families who had to spend their Christmas at the shelter this holiday season. If you are a local branch and would like to be included in any of these programs that we support, please let me know.

LETTER FROM SHARE A FAMILY PROJECT Project Coordinators, JoAnne and Mary Montgomery County Women’s Center Thank you from the Montgomery County Women’s Center and the Share A Family project coordinators! We are most grateful for your participation as a 2016 sponsor of the Share A Family Shelter Santa program. Because of your giving spirit, the Women’s Center was able to provide a memorable holiday to more than 100 families who would otherwise have gone without. Your generosity has already turned lives from hopeless to

hopeful. One client wrote: My children were shown the good in people through the Women’s Center. It was beyond wonderful to see them smile on Christmas Eve. There is no doubt you have inspired and changed the lives of these women. It is our hope that you received as much joy as you gave by taking part in the Shelter Santa program. We send our heartfelt thanks and look forward to working with you for years to come.
A DOG-GONE GOOD SHOW Mark Bartlett Branch Owner — Fremont, CA This is a picture of Bear and me. Bear, at that time, was a six-month-old German Shepherd/Bull Terrier mix. Bear won 2nd place as the most unusual breed. We were one of the sponsors of the Niles Dog Show which also is supported by local businesses and animal rescue organizations of various types along with law enforcement and city council members. We live in Fremont, California and Niles is a historic district within Fremont that is famous for the spot where Charlie Chaplin filmed his movies. We just so happen to live in the Niles district. The dog show proceeds go to both supporting animal organizations (dogs in this case) of various types and also to the Niles Main Street Association which is a non-profit whose goal is to keep Niles historic.

COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY DeAnn Fontenot Club President of the Kiwanis Club of the Southwest Contraband As a club, we strive to be a positive influence on children‘s lives in our community by providing them support to help them thrive. We are dedicated and committed to nurturing, acknowledging, rewarding, and motivating the children in our community with our projects. Our current projects involved in the schools are BUGs, Read Around the World and Golden Rule. To see the children work hard to improve their grades, put effort into reading so many books, and to be positive leaders by treating others with kindness and compassion is truly amazing.
We love to reward these children with pizza parties, banquets, bikes and other gifts. It is so important for these children to know that they live in a community that cares. Some of our other projects are Community Baby Shower, Christmas Sponsorship and AED’s in schools. We also sponsor local organizations including Aktion Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Smile Moore. It’s an honor to be a leader in such a wonderful club, to witness the pure joy on a child’s face, and to receive the appreciation and gratitude from the community. Pam Boudreaux and DeAnn Fontenot.

DRAGON BOAT RACES & TWFG: PARTNERSHIP OF Judith Wighaman Book Transfer Coordinator/Operations Support Associate 01
On September 24, 2016, the TWFG team gathered at Lake Woodlands Park for the 18th Annual YMCA Dragon Boat Races. The Dragon Boat Races have become a tradition at TWFG and the spirit of all attending to help support community programs provided by South Montgomery County YMCA was evident in the fierce competition between those companies attending. Activities included Sumo Soccer, Dodgeball, Human Foosball, Obstacle Courses and other party games with the highlight being the Dragon Boat Races.
Knights unveiled a winner with two nine foot dragons guarding the TWFG tent and a throne for the participants to take pictures. The Dragon Boat Races themselves were also extremely competitive as the push was on to win TWFG a second trophy in two years as the fastest corporate team in The Woodlands for the day. Gordy Bunch and his TWFG team of sailors paddled with all their strength and heart only to come in second within an exciting few milliseconds. All was not lost and the TWFG team worked hard to win in the mental party games, Dodgeball and Human Foosball.
At TWFG, we turn down no challenge, and each Judi Wighaman with the Tent Trophy. of the events was approached with a high level of serious fun and an eye on winning. For the past seven years, This year, here at TWFG, we are looking forward to the 2017 TWFG has won the spirit award for their company tent. BUNCH ON BUSINESS Gordy Bunch President and CEO
YOUR BEST EMPLOYEES EMERGE WITH COMPANY CHALLENGES How you handle adversity will significantly impact your ability to build trust and respect within your company. How often your employees respond quickly illustrates who’s on your A team, B team and no-team. There is a saying that “it happens,” and how you behave and communicate at those times defines how you are perceived as a leader and reveals the character of individual employees. I recently faced a disturbing reality during conversion to a new technology platform in which we had invested significant time, money and commitment. It was not going to work. Our partners, staff and even the vendor all knew the system had reached the point of epic failure to launch. It failed while being installed as our live system of record and impacted every aspect of our business. My response to this and any self-induced crisis was to admit I had made a mistake and that I was going to need everyone’s help to revert to our prior system of record. So the key decision was to acknowledge the issue, take responsibility, ask for help and be transparent. I provided detailed information at several key times keeping the entire company informed on our progress to reestablish our systems and bring back the level of service expected from our company. Your A team responds with “how can I help,” even when the needs are outside of their departments. The A team are the folks who put in the overtime, help other departments out, work weekends and always commit Gordy Bunch to doing whatever is needed to help the company and their peers. This same group is more engaged in company community events, office events, and takes ownership of their respective roles.
20
Your B team expresses concern over the issues and focuses mostly on their own daily work. If time allows, they will chip in during normal working hours but rarely go above and beyond the 40-hour workweek. These folks are good at their core jobs and have the ability to be on the A team but lack the levels of engagement and commitment to make the A team. Being on the A team provides a sense of family, loyalty, job security, and appreciation that exceeds expectations. The no-team players do not recognize the needs of others around them, nor do they fully commit to their core duties. I call these folks the “elbows and glutes,” since that’s all you see of them at 5 p.m. sharp or 4:55 p.m. to be more accurate. The challenge for these folks during times of need is that they stand out even more than they did before. Their need for employment does not outweigh our company’s need for them to perform. It’s rare, but not impossible, for the no-team players to move onto the B or A teams. If they’re honest with themselves and acknowledge their level of effort and commitment, they can choose to step up. Otherwise, we and any other organization will choose to help them step out. I welcome the new A team players we discovered; I continue to hope for the B team folks to join them. I want members of the B team to know who they are and encourage them to step up and join the A team. During difficult times your A team will grow as new folks choose to step up their level of commitment and engagement. It has been said there is opportunity in chaos and that is a truism for the employer and employee. Take challenges as opportunities to re-establish what team you are on and lead by example.
THROUGH THICK & THIN: EPIC FEEDBACK
“
Gordy, we appreciate everything you guys have done over the past several months. I’m sorry EPIC didn’t work out, but we thank you and everyone at the home office for the tremendous support in trying to make this happen.
“
”
Gordy, thank you so much about caring for your agents. I know you do what’s best for us and I would never doubt that. I am a team player and will do what’s best for TWFG. TWFG gave me another chance in the insurance business when Farmers did not. Again thank you for giving me and my family a better life.
“
We all know and respect your passion for the company and us as agents. You have always expressed and proven that to us time and time over. We all support your decision for this company. Amp is not what we need and needs a lot more work but EPIC was a mess. Thanks for all of yours and corp hard work this past month.
“
Gordy, I don’t know if I’m supposed to reply to this email but all I can say is YEAH!!!! This is the best news I’ve gotten in a long time. Thank you for making this very wise decision. Our branch stands behind you 100%.
”
I know this was hard and expensive for you. I also know you had TWFG at heart. The thought of TWFG being under any type of stress has absolutely kept me awake at night and at times physically made me sick to my stomach. But it wasn’t you that failed. We all looked at and tested that program. I wish I could sell insurance that well, I would be rich!!! My point is, don’t beat yourself up, you are still the best. XO PS, if you need a hug I’m here
”
“
Did not see this coming but I am with you. Prayers for you and the team. If it doesn’t kill us it makes us stronger, frankly you were very strong going in.
”
Thank you for the update, Gordy. I have no issues using AMP. But please have mercy for some of us who use EVO to meet compliance something AMP still doesn’t have. (Templates –new business –endorsements – etc.) Let some of us, if possible, use EVO. I know this is overwhelming for everyone but EVO for my agency worked flawless. Thank you.
“
“
“
I just wanted to send you a quick note, letting you know a couple of things. It means a great deal to someone like me, to have an owner who puts the agents first. Being in management of a company that does not do that, it is very refreshing. Knowing that, makes me sure I made the right choice with TWFG. Again, thank you for all you guys do for us.
”
“
I really wanted to send my appreciation for the work that has been done by everyone in the corporate office. Thank you for your commitment to me as a branch owner. Thanks for the work you are doing to get this right. You are appreciated!!!! Keep up the good work!!!! I am proud to be a TWFG Branch Owner!!!! PS. I am in agreement, Let’s Go Back To AMP!!!
”
You made the right decision and it was very well stated. I know the vast majority of agents agree.
”
”
”
“
I’m not going to pretend to understand the stresses you have all been under, nor will I pretend to know exactly how hard you all have been working (along with everyone in your respective departments). What I do know for sure is how much EVERYTHING you are doing is appreciated by us in the field. After speaking with many of the agents in the Presidents Club, we of course can’t agree on whether or not we should have stayed with EPIC, but we all are in agreement that everyone at the main office has gone above and beyond to do their best to take care of us. Thank you for everything, and may the next few weeks bring some normality back to all. PS. I’m proud of myself. I typed that entire email without making a tacky EPIC reference.
”
”
“
“
I respect your decision and know that you are the kind of person that cares about his employees even though we have only met once and spoken little. I learned EPIC fairly quickly from a united group effort within our agency but I did start to skip several redundant and unnecessary steps. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for keeping us in the loop. Thank you again for everything you do and all the hard work from your awesome team at TWFG!!
”
“
At this time I think and know that going back to AMP is the best thing for YOU and for us! EPIC was in my opinion a total fiasco. Inputting the same item more than twice is too time-consuming. In short you have my backing in going back to AMP at this time. But most of all THANK YOU for being honest and open with us as agents. I believe that you sharing your honesty with us is so important. I know you are a busy man so just wanted to share my thoughts with you.
