Mr Shoebridge said there was a better way to expand the airport without impacting the wetland.

“A separate plan, one that would spare the wetland, has been proposed, but it’s a matter of cost and the cheapest option is to destroy the bushland,” he said.

“Do we really want to look back and wish we could have thought of something better.

Are we not destroying the very thing that drives people to our communities – the natural beauty.”

“I’m considering a support group in the future to bring those people who need help together - we want people to know they’re not alone.”

Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system mistakenly turning on itself,

destroying beta cells within the pancreas and removing the body’s ability to produce insulin. Insulin allows the body to process sugar to create energy - without insulin, the body starves as it cannot process food.

Mr Betts is the father of a child with Type 1 diabetes and said finding a cure remains

elusive and complex.

“We have made leaps towards finding a cure however we need a practical cure,” he said.

“Stem cell research and production has come a long way and while it remains frustrating and that’s why events such as these are so important.”

Walk host Karleena Bradshaw HUNDREDS of Tweed residents took part in a special walk to create awareness and fundraise for research towards a cure for Type 1 Diabetes on Sunday, 18 October.

JDRF One Walk host Karleena Bradshaw, who has Type 1 Diabetes, said it was the second year for the walk which raised about $7000 thanks to local donations.

The walk took place at the Jack Evans Boat Harbour from 10am.

Ms Bradsaw said Type 1 diabetes is a life-long autoimmune disease that usually occurs in childhood. It affects over 120,000 people in Australia alone.

“Living with Type 1 diabetes is a struggle every day,” she said.
