EMOTIONS WERE running high when more than 150 conservationists gathered at the Koala Beach Haven at Pottsville on Tuesday, July 7, to meet with NSW Environment Minister Matt Kean and express their concerns over deforestation. Minister Kean was in town to officially hand over 81 acres of land to the Cudgen Nature Reserve, with some of the land to be used to establish a chlamydia vaccination trial in a bid to stem the tide of koala deaths from the disease. Minister Kean fielded questions on an inquiry predicting koalas would become extinct by 2050 if land clearing rates were not slowed, and he acknowledged climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation were the main threats to koalas. He thanked Member for Tweed Geoff Provest, Tweed Shire Council’s Scott Hetherington and community advocacy groups such as Team Koala for all their hard work to save our koalas.
