Condong family stunned by NRRC decision
By Yvonne Gardiner
FOR THE second time, the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC) has denied Jodie Daley the support her family needs to
lift them out of crippling debt. After losing their house and most of their possessions in the February 2022 flood, the family has been told by the NRRC that “Condong doesn’t flood”, Jodie told The Weekly.
This statement ignores the indisputable fact that the Tweed River inundated the village during the shire’s worst-ever recorded flood, swamping many homes, as well as the post office, bowls
club and public school.
Jodie told The Weekly that the family had moved into their lowset Condong home two years before the 2022 flood.

Second NRRC denial stuns Condong family
By Yvonne Gardiner
Continued from page 1
They bought a rundown house on Colonial Drive.
“It was cheap. My husband is a builder so we saw potential.
“We bought it knowing it went under in the 2017 floods, and everyone said it was never going to happen again — the neighbours, all the locals, everybody.
“We thought we could do (the house) up. We cleaned it up. The block’s beautiful, with the river across the road. And then, the flood hit. The whole house went under.”
Jodie’s husband and the family dog had left the house before it was flooded.
“He turned onto Tweed Valley Way and he got up to the first bridge, and that was it, he was under water completely in his truck,” Jodie said.
“He and the dog managed to get out of the car and swim to a house.
“So he was sitting on the veranda of the house for about 12 hours, while the tide
was coming up. Later in the day, he got rescued. A guy in a jet ski came past.”
Colonial Drive had been devastated by the rising tide.
“The last message I got from my neighbour was, ‘your house is gone’,” Jodie said.
“We realised the flood was so big, and so many people were in trouble.”
Jodie doesn’t like the term “victim”. She and her family were “flood-affected” and got on with the task of rebuilding.
They’ve built a new home at Condong, without any government assistance.
“My husband (a builder) straight away demolished the place, within two or three weeks,” Jodie said.
“And we went ahead with the plans that were drawn up. It took 12 months. It’s very high, very flood-proof.
“Because we did not wait for help from the government, we haven’t received anything.
“And NRRC said, ‘no, you’re not in a flood zone’. We are.
“The way they covered themselves, they made their own maps.
“ I think it’s awesome for those who have got help, but there’s still a lot of people around who haven’t had any help at all. Why do we miss out? Because we didn’t wait and weren’t relying on other people, I feel that it was very unfair.”
In her submission to the NRRC’s Resilient Homes Program, Jodie said the family had struggled financially and, mentally, the trauma of the 2022 flood would haunt them forever.

‘weed’ Heads vandalism
By Jonathon Howard
VANDALISM to ‘Tweed Heads’ signage on the M1 to make it read ‘weed Heads’ needs to stop according to Councillor James Owen.
Cr Owen will raise a motion during council’s meeting on Thursday, September 21, to stamp out the behaviour and bolster the image of the Tweed.
The motion notes that a number of Tweed Heads signs on the Pacific Motorway are continuously vandalised with the ‘T’ crossed out so the sign reads ‘weed Heads’.
“These signs look dirty and unkempt because they have been continuously graffitied and subsequently partially cleaned,” the motion reads.
“The connotations of a sign saying ‘weed Heads’ is not ‘a good look’ for a shire that benefits significantly from tourism.
“It is also not a good look for council, Transport for NSW and the police that an item of public property is continually vandalised and we are unable to prevent it from happening.”
Council staff said that “unfortunately
as soon as it is fixed, it is usually redone pretty quickly.”
“There is a saying that ‘the sign of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results’,” council’s report reads.
“Perhaps an alternative solution and some ‘out of the box/innovative thinking’ may be required to address the situation.”
Cr Owen’s motion notes that signs are managed by Transport for NSW Highway Operations, and he will move that council writes to Transport for NSW and asks them to “investigate and implement measures to prevent M1 Motorway signage through Tweed Heads from being graffitied to read ‘weed Heads’, including but not limited to increasing signage height and restricting public access.”
The motion also calls for thorough cleaning or replacing damaged Tweed Heads signage due to repeated graffiti and other vandalism.
Mayor Chris Cherry said she sees the sign as motivation to protect the biodiversity of the Tweed Shire as a reference to controlling weeds.
“That’s being a little tongue in cheek,
but I think there is an issue locally with vandalism,” she said.
“I feel there’s some who are feeling disenfranchised by governments, and this is a symptom.”
Mayor Cherry said she plans to support Cr Owen’s motion.
YOUR THOUGHTS: Do you believe the signage vandalism of ‘Tweed Heads’ to ‘weed Heads’ is a bad look for the shire? The Weekly would like to hear your thoughts via email: editor@theweekly.net.

Ward system question
I believe that we in the Tweed Shire should have a ward system which is the same as the Gold Coast and other local government areas.
I know the Gold Coast councillors but have no idea who the Tweed Shire ones are and I live in the Tweed.
The Tweed Shire shows signs of neglect as there isn’t anyone accountable for each ward.
On the Gold Coast where I previously resided councillors took pride in their wards.
South of the border you see that there is little interest to upkeep the wards to a decent standard as like the Gold Coast.
Oliver Bode, Tweed Heads Ward system could work
I certainly would like to see a ward system (TVW page 3, Sept 14) instituted in the Tweed for the following reasons.
Tweed Shire is too big for one council and three wards would be adequate. I moved here from a ward system and it worked well for most people. A ward system takes some of the politics out of local government, and residents within a ward system know who they can contact about their local issues.
Thanks for the opportunity to comment.
David Burrowes, Tweed Heads
Pathetic pothole response on bridge
A couple of potholes on the Murwillumbah Bridge (TVW page 3, Sept 14) is now considered a highly complex repair that takes months of planning and special weather conditions before it can be attempted — are you kidding me?
What a sad joke this country has become.
This is what happens when you have government departments with absolute power and no accountability,
this broken system must be changed.
William E Goatt, Tyalgum
More staff not councillors
We hear constantly how there is insufficient funding for council to undertake this or that works, or help communities out, and Cr Warren Polglase wants to increase the number of councillors to nine with its associated costs (TVW page 3, Sept 14).
I would think community feedback to council would be Tweed needs more frontline staff to help with the actual running of the place.
Stephen Rose, Palmvale
I hope the ‘No’ vote is represented
I hope that the Tweed Valley Weekly is not about to join the ‘Yes’ campaign or, if it does, the ‘No’ campaign will get a fair go.
One day after the launch of the ‘Yes’ campaign TVW published four letters advocating ‘Yes’ and none advocating ‘No’.
Maybe the Tweed is not as divided as the rest of Australia. Despite protestations to the contrary, the Voice is proving to be very divisive with well-intentioned people on both sides of the debate.
My big worry is that if the Voice proves to be another expensive failure (like, for example, ATSIC), we will be stuck with it unless there is another referendum.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders already have a powerful voice to the Commonwealth Parliament via, for example, eleven ATSI members and senators, the Ministry for Aboriginal Affairs, numerous land councils and the National Indigenous Australian Agency with a staff of 1,400 and a huge budget.
To question the Voice is not scaremongering.
The prime minister and some leading advocates are on record as seeing the Voice as merely a stepping stone
towards a treaty, truth-telling and reparations.
Is this what Australians want?
Gerry Worsell, Tweed Heads South Watch Jacinta Price’s speech
I just watched the full speech of Jacinta Price at the National Press Club recently.
She spoke extremely well about the Voice and why Australia should vote no.
In question time she answered all the questions precisely and knew what she was talking about, not like Linda Burney who never gives an answer but usually just changes the subject.
Jacinta just runs rings around the Labor MPs and those who don’t have a clue what the ‘Yes’ vote will do to Australia.
I am pretty sure if anyone intending to vote ‘Yes’ had watched the entire program they may be voting ‘No’ now.
Jacinta’s parents were there, her father is European and mother Aboriginal, so she knows both sides of the coin. All she wants is equal treatment for all Australians.
I urge every Australian to watch the National Press Club speech in full before voting day.
Noel Frankland, Murwillumbah Voice will enhance the constitution
As someone who intends to vote ‘Yes’ I was recently challenged by an opponent who stated: ‘Would you buy a car that hadn’t been inspected?’
Like many catchy and carefully curated slogans, this one doesn’t stand up to inspection itself.
If I was thinking of buying a car, I would seek advice from qualified experts.
The change to the constitution proposed for the coming referendum has been carefully examined by experts in constitutional law and the overwhelming consensus is that this proposal is
legally sound and could enhance our constitution.
It has also been closely examined by experts involved in programs designed to make a positive difference for First Nations peoples.
They point to clear evidence that measures are more effective and efficient if First Nations peoples are involved in their design.
So, to complete the buying a car example, I not only have expert advice from those qualified in the field to assure this is well and truly roadworthy, I also have an unlimited warranty called the Australian Parliament.
The proposal to be decided on October 14 states that the parliament will make laws relating to the Voice “including its composition, functions, powers and procedures”.
It is in the parliament that the detail will be thrashed out.
The Voice will be fine-tuned and amended by the parliament over time, just like putting the car in for regular maintenance.
The parliament, whoever is in government, remains in control.
Whatever the Voice might recommend, the parliament remains sovereign and will determine what actually happens.
Do you really think an advisory committee can bring about all the nightmare scenarios of fear and loathing currently inhabiting the darker swamps of social media?
Barry Miller, Pottsville ‘Yes’ is the right side of history
The Voice referendum is scheduled for October 14. There has been lots of unnecessary discussion about details that have confused, distracted and muddied the conversation about the simple question being asked.
Simply put, a ‘Yes’ vote will show Australia’s respect and commitment to recognising and supporting our

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people so they can play a bigger role in their own future.
I believe voting ‘Yes’ on this simple principle puts us on the right side of history.
Alma McAllister, Kingscliff Discipline is not wrong
Many of us older folk talk together about the deterioration of moral compass in the generations that follow us.
We are now at the point where children are stealing cars and knifing each other.
Is this because discipline has been denied?
Yes there was cruelty in some discipline, but it seems to me the percentage of real abuse was small.
Us baby boomers were smacked, caned at school, but in my world we know about respect and are generally advantaged by the lessons in our lives, otherwise how can we proceed?
None of us have any choice about our birth situation. The challenge is to deal with it and try to make the best of it.

The world has been stunned by the news that Hugh Jackman and his partner of 27 years have separated and that their journey together is changing for each and both are to pursue individual growth.
Despite an acknowledged very successful marriage, it provided no real fulfilment, so they find it necessary and a challenge to separate and pursue individual growth in order to be able to reach the state of fulfilment.

Strong winds fan fires
By Jo Kennett
STRONG WINDS made it difficult for firefighters battling a bushfire at Wooyung on Sunday, September 17, but fortunately a fire at Burringbar was controlled before the nor-easter came up, with firefighting authorities warning against lighting fires during danger periods.
According to NSW Rural Fire Service Far North Coast Team Area Manager Stephen Prichard, the Wooyung fire was an escaped fire lit by a farmer.
“It got into some long grass and was fanned by strong north-east winds pushing it hard,” Mr Prichard said.
“We had six appliances from (Rural Fire Brigades) Burringbar, Tweed Coast, Cudgen and Billinudgel, and our bulk water truck which is based at Mullumbimby.
“That was at 10am and there was difficulty in accessing it. Forty hectares burnt because of that, as crews had to identify containment lines, as well as direct attack, and they did well to get around it with the winds.
“It was contained at 3.30pm and the crews stayed for another couple of hours mopping up.
“Volunteer crews have been there this morning (Tuesday, September 19) and declared it safe and out.”
Another bushfire at Burringbar on Saturday, September 16, was described by Mr Prichard as “juvenile fire play” without any malicious intent, which quickly got out of control.
“It got into the bush and ran up the hill,” he said.
“We had five trucks attend that and it ended up burning four hectares of bush.
“It was lucky the crews got on top of
it before that wind came up otherwise it would have been a different story.
“The Triple Zero call came in at 2pm and it was contained by 3.30pm.
“It was left on patrol, so the crews go back and make sure everything is right before we take it off the system.
“Crews are still going back today (Tuesday, three days later) to make sure it doesn’t reignite.”
Mr Prichard warned about extreme fire danger periods coming up in the Tweed Shire over the next few days.
“The majority of the shire is moderate to high and then patches will be in the extreme range,” he said.
“Thursday (September 21) is the day that we definitely have to be very careful of any fire in the landscape and this is why we go back and patrol these fires to make sure there is no reignition.
“The wind will be strong, the temperature high and the relative humidity (RH) is very low.
“Remember the 25 rule — 25 km/h winds, 25 degrees temperature and 25 per cent RH.
“We are under 25 in RH on Thursday, over in the winds and over in the temperature — they are predicting 32 or 33 degrees.
“Putting fire in the landscape at the mo-
ment, you need to be very careful and consider whether it’s worth it. We are happy for you to ring us for advice.”
Mr Prichard advised residents to make sure their fire preparation is up to date.
“Fire preparations on property should be underway now and a bushfire survival plan should be revisited,” he said.
“People should be cleaning out gutters as well as basic housekeeping like keeping the grass short, removing any overhanging branches near the roof and making sure things like piles of wood aren’t leaning against the house or anything that can ignite with ember fire.
“There is our Static Water Supply (SWS) program which identifies water sources across the landscape we can use for firefighting.
“Residents get a SWS sign to put on their gate, and then during times of fire we can access that.
“They can contact us, we have them in the office and they usually fill out a form to identify the water source — swimming pools, dams, tanks and what sort of access they have.

Warning - directors duties still apply when touting for business overseas
When company directors are promoting their firm overseas, it may be tempting to somewhat exaggerate the company’s assets and abilities to garner fresh business investments.
They might, for instance, tell prospective foreign investors that their company already has financial backing to build a new factory or expand into new ventures, when in reality it may be in the pipeline but isn’t quite there yet.
Or they could brag to possible foreign business partners that their mine has discovered gold, diamonds or whatever, when it hasn’t.
Business lawyer Geoff Baldwin at Stacks Law Firm said if a company director did this while in Australia, it would breach their duties as a director to provide accurate information and comply with continuous disclosure laws.
“But as a recent court case brought by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission demonstrated, directors have the same duty when they are overseas,” Mr Baldwin said. A former managing director of Australian Mines was fined $70,000 and disqualified from managing corporations for two years by the Federal Court for breaching his duties as a director. He also had to pay ASIC’s legal costs. Australian Mines was fined $450,000.
The director admitted he failed to act with the required care and diligence required of a director when he falsely told investment conferences in Hong Kong and London that his company had secured funding to construct a plant and misleadingly stated its value.
ASIC Deputy Chair Sarah Court said the director of Australian Mines had an obligation to provide accurate information about his company’s dealings and to make sure it complied with continuous disclosure laws.
Care and diligence requirements of directors are spelled out in section 180 of the Corporations Act.
“Continuous disclosure obligations are fundamental principles of fairness and transparency that sit at the heart of Australia’s financial markets,” she said.
“When directors fail in their obligations, they undermine these core principles and ASIC will look to take action.”
Mr Baldwin said the case is a reminder for ASXlisted companies attending overseas conferences that compliance with Australian company law is still expected and enforceable.
“Section 674 of the Corporations Act imposes strict obligations on companies to disclose certain material events relating to the company’s operation or financial position which are likely to affect the price or value of the firm’s securities.
“The penalty could have been harsher. Company directors face fines up to $200,000 and companies up to $1 million for each contravention. However, the mining company admitted it had breached the Act and took steps to correct the information to the stock exchange.”
‘Why do we miss out?’
By Yvonne Gardiner
Continued from page 3.
“I am working two jobs to try and pay our mortgage and credit cards,” she said.
“The floods were devastating for a lot of people, I get that, but we deserve help.
“I believe we are eligible for the $50,000 for the extra building materials and engineering we have had to do to flood-proof our new home. We have paid for everything ourselves.”
More than 2,100 homes in the Tweed Shire were damaged in the 2022 flood, with 500 deemed uninhabitable.
Tweed Mayor Chris Cherry told The Weekly that the NRRC should be very aware of flooding in Condong.
“I have been very happy with the operation of the NRRC to date in that they have provided the funding for a voluntary house buyback program that would have taken Tweed Shire Council 76 years to get the money to pay for,” Cr Cherry said.
“Flood victims who do not agree with their assessment have two avenues for
appeal — the first being the informal request to reconsider, and the second being a formal appeal.
“I am also happy to hear from any homeowners who feel they have been unfairly treated and I can also try to follow up with the NRRC.
“It’s important to remember that the state funding provided did not cover everyone who floods and the NRRC have had to prioritise people that are in locations
where there is risk to life.”
Cr Cherry said council’s own flood recovery was going really well.
“We are more than halfway through the repair program and, although there is a long way to go, it feels like we have done a lot already,” she said.
The NRRC was invited to comment but was unable to respond before our print deadline.
State budget released
By Yvonne Gardiner
TWEED RESIDENTS are expected to reap benefits from the NSW Budget 202324 as the Labor Government spends more on affordable housing, improved health and education services, stemming privatisation, and easing cost of living.
Labor’s first budget in a decade was handed down by NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey on Tuesday.
Member for Lismore, Janelle Saffin, was pleased to deliver Murwillumbah 24/7 policing, with 15 new police officers assigned to the area at a cost of $6.9 million.
“Murwillumbah and surrounding communities will also benefit from $2 million across two years in grant funding to Tweed Shire Council to fund urban flood resilience and mitigation projects,” she said.
“Importantly, the budget delivers on new funding for the ongoing disaster recovery effort across the Northern Rivers.
“A new $150 million Community Restoration Flood Fund has been established
to provide further support for disaster-impacted communities in the Northern Rivers and Central West, including a second instalment of the Resilient Homes Program in the Northern Rivers, repair and replacement of critical infrastructure such as bridges and roads, and the development of priority disaster adaptation plans.
“This is in addition to the extra $121 million to properly resource the NSW Reconstruction Authority.”
Ms Saffin said the housing crisis would be met head-on with a $2.2 billion housing and infrastructure plan, including $60 million to support build-to-rent developments on the North Coast.
“After a decade of neglect, the Labor Government has delivered a budget firmly focused on cost-of-living relief for NSW households and the rebuilding of essential services, education and infrastructure,” she said.
Mr Mookhey said Labor had made “better choices” in framing the budget, to turn a 7.8 billion deficit this financial year into
a surplus next year.
In reducing its debt, Labor will freeze the pay of politicians and top public servants for two years, as well as reducing the public sector’s reliance on consultants and labour hire.
More homes
“This budget builds more homes amidst a housing crisis; it funds more essential workers for our essential services; it rescues the energy transition with additional investment; it aids disaster-hit cities and regions with help to repair, and this budget cuts waste, ends pork-barrelling, funds what works and lowers debt for our children and our grandchildren.
“Above all, this Labor budget delivers the people of NSW the fresh start they voted for.”
Mr Mookhey said inflation remained NSW’s pre-eminent economic challenge.
“It’s why interest rates have increased, living standards have fallen, real wages have declined and unemployment is likely to climb,” he said. Continued on page 20.

Come and help count koalas in the Tweed
Calling the Tweed’s nature lovers and citizen scientists! Spring has sprung and now is the perfect time to get out and about and look for koalas during the upcoming Northern Rivers Koala Count, which takes place from Sunday 24 to Saturday 30 September.
Join Council and Friends of the Koala and make a special effort to report koala sightings.
We already know a lot about where our coastal koalas are, so we’re particularly calling on residents in the north and west of the Tweed to let us know where they see koalas.
The week-long project aims to provide a better understanding about where koalas live and how they use their environment to support important koala research, conservation and management actions.
Visit friendsofthekoala.org/report-a-koala-sighting to report sightings during the week.

Inbound lane only on Wollumbin Street bridge
Tweed Shire Council is urging motorists to plan ahead and seek alternative routes between Murwillumbah CBD and South Murwillumbah for up to 4 weeks from 25 September when essential works to upgrade the town’s main sewer main are undertaken.
Traffic delays and detours can be expected during these vital works, when the Wollumbin Street bridge will be reduced to a single lane – one way traffic only into the Murwillumbah CBD – to allow workers to complete the necessary upgrade safely. Detours will be in place for outbound traffic.
From Monday 25 September, the bridge will be closed to outbound traffic during work hours, which will cause delays. The other lane and footpath will remain open under traffic control measures.
The works are expected to take up to four weeks to complete, weather permitting.
Detours will be in place for outbound traffic via Cane Road, using Queensland Road or Tumbulgum Road, or Bakers Road and Mistral Road.
Work has been scheduled to coincide with the school holiday period when traffic volume is reduced.
Following community feedback, crews will only work from Mondays to Thursdays, from 6 am to 6 pm, with full access restored on Fridays. Weekend work will be considered if required.
Manager Infrastructure Delivery Tim Mackney said the current upgrade follows the successful completion of the preceding sewer upgrades along Wollumbin Street last year and Alma Street the year before.
“This project is critical to replace essential sewerage
infrastructure – which is approaching the end of its serviceable life – and connect previously upgraded infrastructure on either side of the bridge,” Mr Mackney said. To ensure the safety of road users and workers, site preparation works will commence on 20 September. These initial preparations will not impact traffic flow. Council appreciates everyone’s patience and cooperation during this essential project.
Visit tweed.nsw.gov.au/sustainabilityawards to see the full list of nominees and vote.
Only one vote per person is allowed. Voting closes midnight Sunday 1 October. Award winners will be announced at a showcase event on Wednesday 11 October at the Tweed Regional Gallery.
Access through Tyalgum slip site prohibited
Construction will begin on Monday 25 September to restore temporary access to motorists at the extreme landslip on Tyalgum Road.
Contractor SEE Civil is expected to begin mobilising on site later this week with construction works set to begin on Monday.
For safety reasons, this will require all public access through the slip site to be prohibited during the critical construction phase (approximately 4 weeks). This includes access to pedestrians.
Electronic message boards at the start of each end of Tyalgum Road will advise motorists of the site closure ahead.
Once open, the temporary single-lane road will restore vehicle and cycle access through Tyalgum Road, under traffic controls.
Council’s Manager Infrastructure Delivery Tim Mackney said locals and visitors can expect the village’s main road to be open well ahead of Christmas and the holiday season.
“Once mobilised, construction of the temporary access road is expected to take about four weeks to complete, which on current expectations would see Tyalgum Road opened by late October this year,” Mr Mackney said.
Once open, the single-lane access road will continue to be monitored and adjusted, if necessary, to safeguard road users.
Once the temporary road is completed, work will continue on constructing the permanent fix for the road which is expected to take up to 12 months.
Council acknowledges the patience shown by the Tyalgum community since the February 2022 flood. Council is working together with others to deliver a safe and connected local road network.

Coinciding with NSW Small Business Month, October Business Month is part of the Succeed in the Tweed initiative and is testament to the talent, resilience and vibrancy that defines the Tweed’s business landscape.
The month-long extravaganza promises a calendar filled with events tailored to cater to the Tweed’s diverse business community, from business breakfasts and networking nights to online seminars and practical workshops. The program further aims to provide valuable opportunities for skill development, networking, knowledge sharing and celebrating business triumphs in the Tweed.

Community feedback wanted
Council is seeking community feedback on a proposed design to upgrade three public transport shelters on Wharf Street, Tweed Heads to enhance safety, appearance and accessibility in the CBD precinct. The upgrade works include the bus shelter on the corner of Wharf and Bay streets and the 2 shelters in front of Tweed Mall on Wharf Street, one serving buses and the other serving taxis (pictured).
These upgrades are funded by the NSW Government's Stronger Country Communities Fund and a condition of the funding requires community input into the proposed works. Key features of the upgraded shelters include:
• upgraded lighting to improve safety
• mesh backing to provide protection from the weather and allow for clear visibility
• enhanced accessibility and appearance
• reduced ongoing maintenance costs.

Prickly acacia (Vachellia nilotica): A thorn in our side
As its name suggests, Prickly acacia is distinguished by sharp thorns 1–5 cm long. These thorns are highly problematic on grazing land, where dense thickets of thorny scrub impede the movement of livestock to food and water.
On average, Prickly acacia grows 4–5 metres in height, however in the right conditions it can reach 10 metres and can cover properties with thickets of trees that compete with native plants. Mature plants produce 175,000 seeds per year.
One of the main ways Prickly acacia spreads to other regions is through cattle digesting its seed. To prevent this spread, any stock brought into NSW from areas known to have Prickly acacia should be quarantined for at least 7 days both before and after transportation.
Rous County Council is working to prevent Prickly acacia from crossing the QLD border into NSW.
Seen it? Call Rous on 02 6623 3800 or use the webform at rous.nsw.gov.au/report-a-weed

Celebrate World Rivers Day 24 September
From the ranges to the coast, the entire Tweed Shire is connected by water. Our extensive waterways are a treasured feature of the environment and Council is committed to managing them as healthy ecosystems supporting people, flora and fauna.
This World Rivers Day (Sunday 24 September) is a timely reminder of some simple things we can all do to keep our creeks and rivers healthy, including:
• take rubbish home or place it in a bin
• dispose of fishing line responsibly
• use environmentally-friendly fishing tackle.
We share our waterways with a range of native animals, including the platypus, and our actions, both positive and negative, impact them in a number of ways.
During August, Council received 14 platypus sightings (thank you platy spotters!).
This proves that while they’re known for being elusive, they are here! If you spot a platy, please report your sighting or check out the new Platypus of Tweed story map at tweed.nsw.gov.au/platypus to see if there are any platypus in your area.
Funding is available through Council’s River Health Grants program for projects targeting typical problems along our rivers and creeks including poor riparian vegetation and bank erosion.
Have creek or river frontage? Get in touch so Council can help rehabilitate your riparian zones and protect important Tweed platypus habitat.

Crash at 214km/h
By Jo Kennett
A TEENAGE P-plater was clocked driving down the Pacific Motorway at 214km/h before crashing into the Chinderah BP sign and testing positive to alcohol and cocaine in the early hours of Saturday, September 16.
Tweed-Byron Highway Patrol officers conducting speed enforcement duties on the M1 detected the 19-year-old Banora Point man travelling at 114km/h over the speed limit at 12.55am.
The black Holden Commodore Station wagon was travelling at 214km/h in the 100km/h speed zone.
Police activated lights and sirens and caught up to the driver, who they allege was still travelling well in excess of the posted speed limit.
The driver failed to stop and a police pursuit commenced south along the M1. He exited the motorway, taking several streets in an attempt to avoid police before returning and heading south along the M1 reaching speeds of 200km/h.
The driver took the Tweed Coast Road exit in an attempt to enter the BP Service Centre at Chinderah but failed to negotiate the turn, colliding heavily with the BP sign at the entrance of the service station.
Police arrived seconds later and the male driver was removed from the vehicle and arrested.
The Queensland provisional licence holder was subsequently tested for both alcohol and drugs where he returned a positive reading.
He was arrested and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where he provided another positive reading to alcohol and a positive oral fluid detection to cocaine.
He was charged to appear before Tweed Heads Local Court in late October for the offences of
driving/speeding in a dangerous manner, not stopping during a dangerous police pursuit, and driving with a low-range prescribed concentration of alcohol (PCA)
Police are waiting for laboratory results pending further charges.
The man’s licence and privileges to drive in New South Wales were suspended until the matter is finalised in court.
Tweed Police are asking residents if they see anyone driving or riding dangerously, “protect your community” and report it.
If you see, suspect, or know something, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at nsw.crimestoppers.com.au — save Triple Zero (000) for emergencies.
Tweed Police wanted to thank Fire and Rescue NSW Station 347 Kingscliff for their assistance setting up fire protection, turning off power to the sign, and cleaning up debris, oil and petrol from the scene.
Stolen ute found
By Jo Kennett
TWEED POLICE have tracked down a $160,000 stolen ute, as well as cash and drugs, and arrested a man in South Murwillumbah on Friday, September 15.
Police were patrolling in Murwillumbah on Friday when they stopped a 32-year-old man in Lundberg Drive who was driving the black Dodge Ram ute whilst disqualified.
Police allege the man then attempted to run away.
The man was arrested and the utility searched where police seized over $10,000 cash, prohibited drugs — cocaine and methamphetamine — and electronic items.
Police said that on taking a closer look, they saw the utility was covered in wrapping with different coloured paint underneath. Enquiries revealed the utility was stolen in May from a Lennox Head address.
The man was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station where he was charged with driving while disqualified, resisting police, three counts of possessing drugs, driving a vehicle without
consent, interfering with a Vehicle Identifier Number (VIN), two counts of supplying drugs, and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.
The man was refused bail and appeared in Tweed Heads Local Court on September 16.
Tweed Police said they are conducting high visibility and plain clothes patrols of the Murwillumbah area, “determined to prevent and disrupt property crime.”
The latest Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOSCAR) statistics revealed a large jump in car and trailer thefts in the Tweed-Byron Police district.
A total of 220 vehicles were stolen in the Tweed Police District up to March this year, up from 164 in the year to March 2022.
Vehicle theft hit an all-time low during the pandemic but now is on the rise again across the state, with the Richmond-Tweed District recording a 35 per cent increase in vehicle thefts over the last five years.
Police are warning residents to make sure cars are locked with keys out of easy reach in homes, and to not leave valuables in vehicles.

Break and enter bust
By Jo Kennett
TWO MEN have been arrested in Murwillumbah over an alleged break and enter earlier in September.
On Thursday, September 14, at 8.40am, Tweed Police executed a search warrant in Wharf Street, Murwillumbah.
They seized prohibited weapons including knuckle dusters, a flick knife and a small quantity of prohibited drugs.
Police arrested a 21-year-old man and 23-yearold man during the warrant in connection with an alleged break, enter and steal on a commercial business at the M|Arts Precinct earlier this month.
Stolen trailer used in theft
By Jo Kennett
TWEED POLICE are calling for assistance over the alleged theft of a trailer from the Cudgen Leagues Club car park between Friday night, September 15, and Saturday, September 16, which they believe was used in the alleged theft of thousands of dollars’ worth of gear from the club’s maintenance shed early on Saturday morning.
The eight by five foot black trailer with a cage has the registration number TH-72-UZ.
Owner Craig Gadd said his house fronts onto the car park and he had his trailer parked outside on Friday.
“It’s parked there all the time and it wasn’t until Saturday afternoon I realised it was missing,” he said.
“My wife said, ‘Your trailer’s not there’, thinking that I had lent it to someone.
The men were taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.
The 23-year-old male was charged with aggravated break, enter and stealing from a dwelling in company, stealing (less than $60,000), two counts of dishonestly obtaining property by deception, two counts of possessing or using a prohibited weapon without a permit, and possessing a prohibited drug.
The man was refused bail and appeared in Tweed Heads Local Court on September 15.
The 21-year-old was charged with two counts of dishonestly obtaining property by deception and was granted conditional bail to appear at Murwillumbah Local Court on October 18.
“When she said that, I was like, far out, it’s gone.”
On the front two pillars are two blue pool noodles wrapped in silver tape (with some blue showing at the top) which Craig used to cover the posts so the tarp didn’t get ripped. The trailer had hitch locks so it couldn’t be hitched onto a car.
“You have to cut the lock first,” Craig said.
“They cut the shed locks at 10.50pm the night before (the leagues club’s maintenance shed). I don’t know when they cut my lock.
“I know the trailer was there Friday, but they apparently cut the locks in the shed and came back at 5.30am and took everything out.
allegedly taken from the club, in the back.
“The grey car has my trailer and so they have picked up my trailer and taken it over to the shed and filled it up,” Craig said.
The Cudgen Leagues Club secretary said a zero-turn mower worth around $20,000 was stolen, along with a whipper snipper, three 20 litre drums full of fuel, and a large roll of whipper snipper cord.
On Sunday someone came back and tried to steal other equipment but they were caught by a board member and left the scene.
“It was during the day while the juniors had their footy presentation on and there were heaps of people around,” the Cudgen Leagues Club secretary said.
“There were two of them and one of the board members caught them.
“We’ve had to take extra security measures so it doesn’t happen again.
“We don’t have insurance because we already have a massive claim in for the fire so it’s another big financial blow to the club.”
Tweed-Byron Police District Acting Inspector Chris Neve said no one has been arrested in relation to the alleged thefts and that police are investigating.
He said they are seeking information and wish to speak to anyone depicted in the screenshot from the CCTV footage.
If you have any information about this alleged theft please contact Tweed Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. If you have information about the trailer quote report number E94769346.
“If we were walking around the house we could have seen straight out there but we weren’t up at 5.30am.”
The trailer was later caught on CCTV footage hitched onto a grey sedan, with a lawnmower,

Council elections in 2024
IT’S JUST under a year until local government elections in NSW, with polling to be held across the state on Saturday, September 14, 2024.
All seven councillor positions will be contested at the poll in the Tweed, with the number of councillors confirmed by a resolution at the September 7 council meeting.
Current councillors elected in December 2021 are serving a reduced term of two years and eight months as the 2020 election was postponed due to COVID-19.
The election process will be managed by the NSW Electoral Commission.
The September 14, 2024, poll will not include a mayoral election.
In the Tweed, the mayor and deputy mayor are elected by the councillors in a process managed by Tweed Shire Council.
The mayor is elected at the first meeting of
the council for a period of two years.
If council chooses to have a deputy mayor, they are elected for one-year terms.
Manager of Corporate Governance Stephanie Papadopoulos said preparations had already begun for the 2024 election.
“For those who may have an interest in becoming a councillor and want to know more about how to stand for election, briefing sessions for potential candidates will be made available in the Tweed in the first half of 2024,” Ms Papadopoulos said.
Those considering standing for election as a councillor can find out more at the Office of Local Government online at www.olg.nsw.gov. au/councils/councillors, by email olg@olg.nsw. gov.au, or phone: 02 4428 4100.

Tyalgum Road update
TYALGUM ROAD could be open with temporary access by November this year, according to Tweed Shire Council, who said construction work is set to begin within weeks.
Tyalgum Road suffered a catastrophic landslip during the February 2022 flood and businesses and residents have been waiting anxiously for repair works to get underway.
Council and contractor SEE Civil Pty Ltd are taking steps towards building a temporary access road through the slip site. This will return unrestricted vehicle access through Tyalgum Road to motorists and cyclists via a stop/go system.
Restoration works, which were expected to start in late July, were deferred pending finalisation of a revised design.
Council’s Acting Director of Engineering Tim
Mackney said the community’s concerns had been heard and Council and contractor SEE Civil were working to expedite vehicle access while ensuring the safety of road users and construction teams.
“We understand the frustrations of the Tyalgum community due to the prolonged disruption caused by the landslip,” he said.
Council is currently reviewing the design for the temporary access road. If there are no further unexpected issues, the assessment is expected to be finalised within the next two weeks.
“Once mobilised, construction of the temporary access road is expected to take about four weeks, which on current expectations would see the road opened by November this year,” Mr Mackney said.

and to collaboratively empower all students to become con dent, resilient, self directed and successful learners.
Principal, Mr Les Daley, and executive staff Ms Lynn Lack, Ms Louise Watkins , Ms Tristan Hill and Mr Tim Gamble are supported by an enthusiastic teaching and administrative staff that are united in their plans to continue to enhance the reputation of the school as a leading provider of public education in NSW.

Excellence. The award ceremony took place at Sydney Town Hall two weeks ago.
Murwillumbah Public School knows where it is headed and certainly has the staff and resources to continue to make a difference for the students of Murwillumbah.

On November 5, the annual Kids in Need Dragon Boat Festival will bring teams from as far away as Hong Kong.
They gather on the fun-packed day to raise funds for seriously ill children and children with disabilities.
Visitors will travel from all over Australia to attend the 2023 Galah Regional Photography Prize from November 10-19. The prize has been created to encourage excellence in contemporary photography from regional Australia.
Tweed District Orchid Society Annual Orchid Fair and Show takes place from November 3-5.
The Lions Club of Kingscliff Carols by the Coast entertains on December 12 in Rowan Robinson Park. More than 2000 people attended the event in 2022.
Sponsorship of all chosen events will cost the council $89,450 in the current round.
Councillor Rhiannon Brinsmead said some really great local events were coming up.

More money for health
Continued from page 6.
NSW Government-owned land and property development organisation Landcom will receive $300 million extra funding
“It will go towards building 4697 new homes, 1409 of them will be affordable homes,” the Treasurer said.
“The extra money is in addition to the $60 million Landcom will get to pilot publicly owned, build-to-rent projects in the Northern Rivers and Illawarra-Shoalhaven regions.
“Privatisation also drains the family budget every time the electricity bill arrives and those with the least are suffering the most, with the sky-high prices charged by the privately owned power companies.
“This budget raises the family and seniors energy rebate to $250, the low-income household and medical energy rebate to $350, and the life support rebate to $1639 for each equipment type, from 1 July next year. They will help up to 1.6 million families.”
Health boost
To begin rebuilding essential services, more health services workers will be hired and health infrastructure will be improved.
Five hundred more paramedics will be employed in rural and regional NSW as part of a $438 million program.
“Roads right across our vast state require significant improvement and repair,” Mr Mookhey said.
“A new $390m regional emergency road repair fund will help councils rebuild local roads destroyed in natural disasters.
“Few people have done it tougher than those who have lost their homes or seen their community devastated by floods and fires.
“This budget includes $4 billion for natural disaster support and recovery programs to pay the bills left behind from the March 2021 floods, the November 2021 floods, the February and July 2022 floods, and the floods in August and September 2022.”
Opening of time capsules
A PAIR of time capsules that were buried in the foundations of the Murwillumbah Civic Centre Library by council and the Apex Club in 1973 are scheduled to be cracked open later this year.
It’s been 50 years since the time capsules were sealed and there’s great anticipation for what they may contain.
Tweed Shire councillors will vote on what specific date to open the time capsules during their monthly meeting this Thursday, September 21, citing either October 12, October 19 or November 9 as options.
Councillors attended a workshop on June 8 this year to discuss the unveiling of the capsules and council staff were requested to report back on details of a small event.
Council will need to determine whether the library will close to remove the capsules.
“To honour the historic nature of the time capsules and to ensure proper safety procedures can be followed, it is proposed that experienced museum staff will clean, document and identify contents of capsules prior to the presentation at an official unveiling ceremony,” council’s report reads.
“Museum staff will then research the contents as required to provide supporting information for councillors and event purposes.”

To achieve good physical balance, we rely on our brain, eyes, inner-ear, and musculoskeletal system to work in harmony. However, when the fragile vestibular organs of the inner ear and brain are damaged by illness or injury, anyone can lose their ability to balance.
Balance disorders are typically under diagnosed and undertreated. More than 1/3 of adults aged 40 years and older experience vestibular dysfunction at some point in their lives.
Common symptoms of vestibular disorders include vertigo and dizziness. Vertigo is a spinning or whirling sensation, or an illusion of the self or world moving. Dizziness is a lightheaded, floating or rocking sensation. Poor balance, nausea, visual disturbances, headache, hearing loss, tinnitus, and pain or fullness in the ears can accompany vestibular disorders.
There are many causes of dizziness or vertigo. But most types of vestibular disorders can be diagnosed by means of a thorough medical history and clinical examination.
The most common type of vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo
(BPPV), and once diagnosed is easily treated with repositioning manoeuvres.
Amongst other types of vertigo are Meniere’s Disease, Vestibular Neuritis and Cervicogenic Vertigo Cervicogenic Vertigo is due to a dysfunction in the neck and can be easily treated with Osteopathic intervention.
Dr Rudi Gerhardt has had substantial education in the field of Vestibular Disorders, can diagnose most of the common types, and is able to either treat the condition or refer on for further diagnosis and treatment.

YES VOTERS in the Tweed took to the streets on Sunday.
It was touted as a history-making march, witnessed by First Nations Elders who were party to Australian constitutional change in 1967 which had profound impacts on their lives.
In 1967, an overwhelming majority of Australians voted to amend sections in the Australian Constitution to allow for Aboriginal people to be included in the census.
That referendum also altered the “race power” to allow Federal Parliament to make special laws about Aboriginal peoples.
About 500 marchers on Sunday in Tweed Heads vowed to campaign for further change to the Constitution at a referendum on October 14, to give Indigenous peoples a “Voice”.
In his Welcome to Country, Uncle Victor Slockee said the result of October’s referendum would determine the future of the land and its people.
“Many of the decisions in the past were made for us, not by us,” Uncle Victor said. “Reconciliation and a voice is an opportunity for all people to come together.”
Mayor Chris Cherry told the marchers that a ‘Yes’ vote would change the country for the better.
“On October 14, we will all be asked one very, very simple question – ‘do you approve altering the Constitution to recognise First Nations people in Australia in establishing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voice,” she said.
“I think all of us recognise that there is only one answer.
“Hands up if you believe that all children should have equitable access to healthcare, education and employment.
“Now keep your hand up if you think we are achieving that with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
“We all know there is a problem. The Voice is about making a change to try to fix that problem.
“A famous educational expert once said: ‘Equality is giving everyone the same pair of shoes; equity is giving everyone a pair of shoes that fit.
“The Voice is about finding the shoes that fit. Finding equity. Consulting directly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about how to get those shoes that fit.”
Cr Cherry said Tweed Shire Council has had an Aboriginal advisory group for the past 30 years.
“It has meant that decisions that we made were better; decisions that we made were stronger, and we have a stronger relationship with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” she said.
“Who wouldn’t want that for our whole country. What we need now is unity, what we need now is strength, and what we need now is courage.”
The Northern Rivers ‘Yes’ march from Tweed Civic Centre to Chris Cunningham Park near Twin Towns was among many gatherings held around Australia.
Arguments for the ‘No’ vote include that the Voice won’t deliver meaningful change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, or that Sovereignty and Treaty should be prioritised ahead of a Voice to Parliament.

Sugar cane inquiries up
SUNSHINE SUGAR is receiving a surge in inquiries from both existing and prospective sugar cane growers eager to enter or expand into the sector and reap the many rewards.
Sunshine Sugar CEO Chris Connors said the attractive sugar price and positive outlook for the sugar cane sector was driving the inquiries, with farmers poised to receive $55 per tonne of sugar cane for at least the next three seasons.
The bolstered global sugar price and strength of the NSW sugar industry could not come at a better time for Tweed Shire canegrowers, who continue to recover from the 2022 flood.
Sugar cane has been grown in the Northern Rivers region for more than 150 years and has been a stable source of livelihood for hundreds of farming families and provided thousands of employment opportunities for the local community.
Throughout this time, the industry has weathered many challenges and navigated fluctuations in agricultural commodity prices on the back of a remarkably resilient crop — sugar cane.
This was demonstrated again in the catastrophic floods that impacted the region in early 2022. Despite sugar cane crops being inundated under metres of water, in most cases, growers were able to harvest a crop during that season. Many other crops in the region did not fare as well.
Mr Connors said this combination of factors has prompted a renewed interest in sugar cane production in the region.
“In the last six to 12 months we have received numerous inquiries from both existing and prospective sugar cane growers looking to expand their cane production or venture into the sector,” he said.
Mr Connors attributes this surge in interest to a combination of factors, including attractive sugar prices, the resilience of the sugar cane crop, the positive outlook for the sector and farmers looking to diversify their cropping operations and spread risk.
The Sunshine Sugar Board has recently approved applications for more than 1,000 hectares in the Richmond Valley area to transition to sugar cane this season.
The property owners are keen to tap into the opportunities the local sugar industry provides, and as such have been granted a production entitlement.
With planting season having just started, anyone holding land in the Northern Rivers region and interested in sugar cane cultivation, is encouraged to reach out to their nearest sugar mill or contact the Sunshine Sugar corporate office situated in Ballina.

MEPS score top four place
By Jonathon Howard
MURWILLUMBAH EAST
Public School’s soccer team has advanced to the top four in the state after taking down Tamworth Public School in a 2-1 victory on Monday, September 18.
The team achieved the win at the Jim Devine Field on the grounds of the Murwillumbah Soccer Club in front of more than 60 of their peers.
The win was helped under the
guidance of super coach Ben Wills, who has worked closely with each player from years 5 and 6 to develop their skills on the field.
Murwillumbah East principal
Vanessa Chaffey said the team roar talent, athleticism and teamwork shone through during the game.
“In the first half the boys were down 1-0 after a penalty shot,” she said.
“But they recouped in the second half and came out and secured a great goal by Noah
followed not long after by a second goal by Evan.
“The boys then held strong to defend an attack from Tamworth in the last ten minutes to hold the game.”
Ms Chaffey said the Murwillumbah East team celebrated the win but were quick to acknowledge the strong Tamworth side, who played well. Murwillumbah East’s side is now off to Sydney to play as the North Coast champions in the finals of the state primary school soccer tournament.

Tyalgum Music Fest
THE ICONIC Tyalgum Music Festival will bathe the little town in classical music on the last weekend in September.
With eight concerts by Australian and International musicians, there is something for everyone.
There will be opera scenes, prizewinning talent from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, the sensational German-based Vision String Quartet, a performance of Stravinsky’s much loved The Soldier’s Tale with narrators and a dancer, Bandaluzia Flamenco, the Brahms Horn Trio, cellist Trish Dean, and Russian Pianist Konstantin Shamray.
“The magic of Tyalgum Music Festival has always been its element of surprise,” director Katharine Willison told The Weekly.
“The sheer fact that a weekend of world class classical music takes place in the tiny village of Tyalgum nestled in one of the most beautiful areas on earth is a delightful surprise.
“You never know what will be on the program
but you can be sure that every concert will be wonderful!”
Artistic director Peter Luff added: “Some thirty years ago, Carmel Kaine invited me to play in a performance of the Schubert Octet for an evening concert she was hosting at her home on Bald Mountain. This performance, which we played to an informed and appreciative audience, proved to be the catalyst for the Tyalgum Music Festival.
“This year’s program will present a feast of amazing artists and musical flavours – performances from some of our youngest and brightest stars in a chamber music showcase, and an evening of Flamenco to spice up your Saturday night.”
The festival opens with Opera in the Caldera at 7pm on Friday, September 29, and ends with Russian pianist Konstantin Shamray playing a stunning program of Rameau, Ravel, César Franck and Prokofiev at 3.30pm on Sunday, October 1.

Classical gems at Murwillumbah
By Madeleine Murray
THE GOLD COAST Chamber Orchestra will be performing Classical Gems at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre at 2.30pm on Sunday, September 24.
The varied program features the moving work Elegy for Solo Viola, String Quartet and String Orchestra by English composer Herbert Howells. It is a memorial to his fellow music students who lost their lives in World War I.
Thomas Chawner, member of the brilliant string quartet Orava, will play the solo viola.
Thomas was an Australian Chamber Orchestra Emerging Artist and has since performed regularly with the ACO. He has appeared as a guest principal with the Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras.
Apart from his busy performing schedule with Orava, Thomas has made many appearances at prominent music festivals around Australia including the Huntington Estate Music Festival, the Australia Festival of Chamber Music, and the Bangalow Music Festival.
The program includes Josef Suk’s Serenade
for Strings, who continued from his teacher, Dvorak, as the most prominent composer of the next generation of Czech composers.
The concert opens with a movement from Holst’s Moorside Suite and includes the Little Suite for String Orchestra by the renowned Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe.
The finale is a lively tango-inspired piece by the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, arranged by Thomas Kalb.
Chen Yang is a regular guest conductor with the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) for its Metro Concert Series as well as other guest conducting engagements with Brisbane City Pops Orchestra, Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra and the Gold Coast Chamber Orchestra.
Classical Gems is on at 2.30pm on Sunday, September 24 at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre. You are invited to mingle with the musicians after the concert and enjoy a complementary glass of champagne and nibbles.
Classical Gems is also on at 2.30pm on Sunday, October 8 at Bond University. For more information and tickets, please visit: gcco.com.au
Catch Taylor Made Blues
TAYLOR MADE Blues is an eclectic group of musicians from the Brisbane and Gold Coast areas and are performing at the Condong Bowling Club on Friday, September 29.
The group began as a social gathering in 2019 and quickly became a great working combination performing across Queensland and Northern NSW.
The members are well-known South East Queensland entertainer Lee Taylor on guitar and vocals, Moemai ES losia (Sos) from New Zealand on keyboards and vocals, with Martin Warren on drums and Terry Eaves on bass guitar.
All the players have a wealth of experience working with many great entertainers in their time.
Among others, Lee worked with the late and great Wiley Reed at over 300 gigs for six years.
Sos with his jazz music training was in demand in New Zealand before he moved to Perth as a performer and teacher then settled in Brisbane.
Martin’s professional approach shines from a wealth of experience on the European circuit.
Then there is Terry who started his love of the blues in the 60s playing with a plethora of bands including well-known Brisbane musician Mick Hadley and others, where they were the support for international acts including British blues legend John Mayall and others like blues rock band Slade.
The gig kicks off at 6pm with The Early Birds followed by Taylor Made Blues at 7.30pm.

Graceland at Twin Towns
TAKE TWO of Australia’s greatest singers, give them Paul Simon’s Graceland album and what do you get? An amazing show!
Wendy Matthews and Grace Knight are taking their big voices and sassy style on the road. The multi-award-winning artists have a swag of Countdown, MTV and ARIA awards between them, along with a bundle of platinum albums under their belt.
“The songs and our band are wonderful, and it’s a lot of fun,” Wendy told The Weekly. “Grace and I love performing together and I think that’s infectious.”
Born in Montreal Canada, Wendy left home at 17 to go busking with friends across the US and Mexico. In 1982, while in Los Angeles, she met Little River Band front man Glenn Shorrock who invited her to tour with him. Soon after, Australia became her new home.
Wendy has been in several iconic Australian bands such as Models, Rockmelons and Absent Friends. Her haunting song The Day You Went Away won two ARIA awards.
UK-born singer Grace Knight led the Australian band Eurogliders to international success in the 1980s, and sang lead vocals on the band’s
classic Heaven (Must be There).
“After 20 years of talking about doing a show together, Wendy and I are finally onstage and having a blast,” Grace told The Weekly.
Backed by a dazzling jazz ensemble, Grace and Wendy deliver their take on the very best of Paul Simon – You Can Call Me Al, Late in The Evening, Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes, as well as Simon & Garfunkel gems such as Sounds of Silence, The Boxer, Homeward Bound and Bridge Over Troubled Water.
“Paul Simon is such a wonderful lyricist. The stories in his songs are humorous, profound, and everything in between. “Grace was the one who suggested his music. I thought it was perfect because it includes Simon & Garfunkel from the 60s and 70s right through to Paul’s African feels.”
“The biggest challenge was which songs to leave out,” Wendy added. “Paul Simon has written so many great, well-known songs that the show would go for days if you tried to include them all.”
Wendy Matthews & Grace Knight – We’re Going to Graceland is on at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 30 at Twin Towns, Tweed Heads. For tickets please visit: wildgoat.com.au or twintowns.com.au

FEATURED BUSINESS
QUALITY WORKMANSHIP and great customer service are just two of the ways Aden Roberts’ business Adapt Electrical has been described by his happy customers over the past 18 months.
Aden launched his local business just prior to the 2022 flood.
“While that has come with its challenges, it’s also been a great way to service the Tyalgum and Murwillumbah communities during a period of rebuilding,” he said.
“In particular with the Tyalgum Road closure, it has been more important than ever to have local trades available.
“A big milestone for our small business has been hiring a second electrician, Kesheva Head.
“He is an epic addition to the team and is an incredible electrician. He is also a surfer and has a young family.”
Both Aden and Kesheva pride themselves on quality as well as competitive quotes.
The duo have a passion for the Tweed Shire and Aden has established himself in the beautiful tiny town of Tyalgum.
“I moved from Sydney to the Tweed Shire when I was 24 and haven’t looked back, I love surfing and being outdoors, so for me, the lifestyle is perfect,” Aden said.
“My partner and I bought a home in
Tyalgum and last year we welcomed our beautiful son, it was also the year I launched our business - Adapt Electrical Group.”
Adapt provide domestic, commercial, and industrial electrical works.
“We also offer 24/7 emergency service and level 2 service connections (connecting houses to Essential Energy electrical mains),” Aden said.
“We are a very customer-focused business, providing a 100 per cent money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied with our service.”
The duo are fully qualified and Aden is continuing to build his knowledge by studying a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering.
“We have received lots of positive feedback from our customers about quality workmanship, timeliness, affordability, and great customer service,” he said.
Adapt Electrical offer free quotes with no obligations and are only a phone call away in an emergency.

Centaur Primary Sporting successes
THE SPORTING stars of Centaur Primary School are on a winning streak like never before, with both the Netball and Touch Football teams achieving outstanding results at the state level.
Netball Glory
The Centaur Primary School Netball Team has left a trail of victories in their wake as they progressed to the top 4 in the state in the prestigious New South Wales Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) Knockout competition.
Their remarkable journey has earned them a spot in the semi-finals at Wollongong on Friday, September 22, where they will battle it out for the championship title. But their success doesn’t end there. The team also displayed their prowess in the All School Netball Competition organised by NSW Netball, where they faced off against a diverse range of schools, including private, Catholic, public, and independent institutions. The Centaur girls were declared Far North Champions, a testament to their exceptional talent and dedication.
Their next stop is Sydney Olympic Park on November 7th, where they will compete in the top 8, aiming to secure another championship title and add to their growing list of accomplishments.
Touch Football Triumph
Not to be outdone, the same group of girls from Centaur Primary School has also excelled in the NSW PSSA Touch Football Knockout competition. They’ve secured a spot in the top 8 in the state, showcasing their versatility and athleticism across different sports.
Their journey continues as they head to Canterbury on November 23rd, with their eyes firmly set on clinching the championship title. With their outstanding performance in netball and touch football, these young athletes have proven themselves as true all-rounders, capable of conquering any challenge they face.
Community Pride
The entire Centaur Primary School community is rallying behind these exceptional athletes, cheering them on as they aim for state glory. The dedication, teamwork, and sports -
manship displayed by these young girls serve as an inspiration to their fellow students and a source of pride for their school.
The upcoming competitions in Wollongong and Canterbury hold the promise of more thrilling moments and unforgettable achievements for the Centaur Primary School Netball and Touch Football teams. As they continue to pursue excellence on the sports field, they are sure to leave a lasting legacy of success for their school and community.

SELLINGSPRING SEASON
What’s old is new in these beauties
By Jo Kennett
THIS WEEK we are featuring three properties that will appeal to anyone who loves something unique and full of vintage charm. The first, a four-bedroom 1930s cottage at 468 Smiths Creek Road, Smiths Creek, offers a wonderful rural lifestyle for anyone who has had enough of that darned rat race.
Surrounded by farms, this sunny cottage sits on a flat, fully fenced quarter acre (1012m2) block surrounded by grazing land, so you can yodel to your heart’s
content without the neighbours coming to hunt you down.
If you have someone in your family who likes working on machinery, or stuff in general, you are in luck because this home also has a big three-bay shed with a workshop area next to it.
The location is an added bonus, four minutes to Uki, six to Smiths Creek and a 30 minute spin to the beautiful creek and beaches of Pottsville.
It’s freshly painted inside and out with new roof and guttering and on the market with Anne Besgrove at First National Murwillumbah for just $725,000.
Our second vintage charmer is a flood-free 1940s bungalow at 26 Prince Street, Murwillumbah.
It has beautiful original features including 11-foot ceilings, original windows and French doors, polished timber floors, and a whole lot of updates which

makes it perfect for lazy people like myself, who just want to move right in and take a nap somewhere cosy.
It is elevated and faces northeast with mountain views and lots of sunshine, car parking for two or three cars with dual street frontage, and a choice of versatile outdoor living spaces for any time of the day and season overlooking lovely cottage gardens.
The main home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and two living rooms and a selfcontained studio with its own
The vintage home at 51 Riverview Street, Murwillumbah is in an elevated, flood-free spot, and was built around 1890, with the most beautiful original features including gorgeous stained-glass windows, ornate ceilings and cornices, pressed metal 11-foot ceilings, decorative timber work throughout, polished timber floors, French doors — the lists goes on.
This home has stylish modern amenities throughout, plenty of parking, a lovely garden, and a big sunroom with views to the mountains.
