The hidden border valley of Piggabeen A LOT of people have never even heard of the rural community of Piggabeen, tucked away in a lush valley just under the border, or have any idea that it is one of the most northerly settlements in the Tweed Shire. That’s pretty well how the locals prefer to keep it. The First Nations people living in the Piggabeen Valley before white settlers moved in, according to The Piggabeen and Cobaki Community Association website, were the Tulgigin tribe, who named the valley Piccabeen, meaning Valley of the Palms. Cedar-getters and then farmers moved to the area in the mid1800s, having to get into the valley by the punts and barges which plied the waterways. The heritage-listed Piggabeen Hall was built in 1910 and has been the hub for this close-knit, down-to-earth community ever since. Bonfires, dances, first loves,

fancy dress parties, talent contests - if those walls could talk they would have quite a story to tell. Chris Disney has lived in a 115-year-old Piggabeen farmhouse for four years. “When I moved here there were hardly any houses, it was a real farming community and very community minded,” Chris told The Weekly. “There was a bush dance at the hall and everyone came. There were no cars. “Everyone knew each other, especially during the floods, because we were cut off from the town. “The creek would come up and most of the kids went to Tweed River High School and they would have to get ferried home on a tractor.” “At Christmas we had huge parties and we had races up to the border and they were a lot of fun. There were always kids camping and having fun outdoors.” The population has exploded
